THIS paper describes a technique of polishing and etching specimens of open-hearth furnace slags or hearth aggregates for identification of the crystalline constituents-lime (CaO), tricalcium silicate (3CaO•SiO2), dicalcium silicate (2CaO-SiO2), monticellite (CaO•MgO-SiO2), or forsterite (2MgO•SiO2), with especial emphasis on the mineral merwinite (3CaO-MgO.2SiO2). With proper standardization, this identification does not require the use of the petrographic microscope. The composition of basic open-hearth slags and furnace bottoms falls, almost without exception, within systems containing CaO, MgO, "FeO," MnO and SiO2, in which the number of basic molecules so greatly exceeds the orthosilicate ratio (two molecules of base to one of silica) that free basic oxides, and combinations between them such as aluminates or ferrites, are present in cooled specimens. Orthosilicates of (CaO + MgO) are the most common in such specimens, since in nearly all cases, except premelt slags, the molecular ratio of (CaO + MgO) to SiO2 is more than 2 to r. When sufficient lime is available it combines with the silica to form dicalcium silicate (2CaO•SiO2), which contains little, if any, MgO, FeO or MnO in solid solution whereas the latter oxides combine to form the oxide solid solution known as periclase. If the lime present is insufficient to form dicalcium silicate (2CaO•SiO2) it combines with MgO to form either merwinite (3CaO•MgO.2SiO2) or monticellite (CaO-MgO•SiO2); these minerals take little if any FeO or MnO into solid solution and the remaining MgO, FeO and MnO combine as periclase. This generalization seems to be valid for basic slags and furnace bottoms, since minerals such as CaO-MnO•SiO2 and CaO-FeO-SiO2 are found only in slags in which the lime-silica ratio is less than 2 and are not observed in specimens from furnace bottoms. The identification of crystalline constituents in such materials, especially of fine crystals in the groundmass, is difficult under the petrographic microscope. They are often masked by their neighbors because of their small size in relation to the thickness of the thin section and because of the presence of opaque or colored constituents. The indices of retraction and the optical sign of the mineral are sometimes difficult to determine because of the small size or because of twinning or of inclusions within the crystal. Moreover, the positive identification of merwinite (3CaO•MgO.2SiO2) from its optical properties is usually difficult in the presence of dicalcium silicate (2CaO•SiO2). A METAL or alloy finds its place in commerce in proportion to its ability to serve certain purposes better and more economically than other materials. While there is some overlapping of the fields of application of the various metals under discussion in this symposium, each one has its uses for which it is especially adapted. While aluminum is the most recent of the metals to enter the field, the development of the industry has been based on its peculiar properties, by virtue of which new uses for non-ferrous metals have been created. There has been substitution of this new metal for other members of the group but there has been a far greater development in entirely new fields. In common with the other non-ferrous metals, aluminum is resistant to atmospheric corrosion. It also withstands the action of many of the common chemical reagents, strongly alkaline substances being the notable exceptions. The outstanding properties on which the application of aluminum is based are its low specific gravity and its ease of fabrication into the forms in which it is used. It is noteworthy that this property of specific lightness is retained in all the commercial aluminum-base alloys. This statement does not apply to aluminum bronze; this is more properly a copper-base alloy, since aluminum enters into its composition to the extent of only about 10 per cent. None of the commercial casting alloys of aluminum has a density exceeding that of the parent metal by more than about 10 per cent., and some are actually lighter. In the so-called "strong alloys" of aluminum in which strengths comparable to that of mild steel are developed by heat treatment, the greatest increase in density is only slightly more than 3 per cent., and one of these, also, is lighter than aluminum. This property of lightness combined with the desirable mechanical properties of the alloys, makes aluminum especially suited for parts of moving assemblies where saving in power, as well as a decrease in stresses resulting from inertia and vibration, are of importance.

The stepped-up pace of US open-pit and surface mining during the 1970's is a direct response by mining firms and equipment manufacturers to rising costs and declining ore grades. In the race for bigger and more efficient machines, rotary drills have emerged as the foremost leader in primary drilling at major US surface operations. At least 12 different manufacturers now offer rotary rigs in the 102- mm-diam. (4-in.) or greater blasthole size range. With capital investment for the larger units quickly approaching $1 million, the question is asked, "What's been the performance record to date of rotary drill rigs operating in North America?" To answer that question, a comprehensive study of rotary blasthole drills was conducted which qualitatively reveals various problem areas inherent in the rotary drill market and indicates some new directions for improvement.

FOR the second time the Mineral Industry Education Division opened the sessions at the Annual Meeting by gathering at the Engineering Woman's Club, Sunday at 3 p. in., and, in spite of the informality of the hour, with a good attendance of representative men in the educational field. The chairman of the Division, Thomas T. Read, after briefly reviewing some of the more significant events of the past year, introduced H. P. Hammond, professor of civil engineering, Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, a leading figure in the project of the Engineers' Council for Professional Development for accrediting engineering schools. Prof. Hammond made it clear that the project is not to rate engineering schools but to accredit them; not to arrange them in order of excellence, but to segregate them into two groups, those that are entitled to recognition as genuine engineering schools, and those that are not. About thirty schools in the whole country will presumably fall into the latter class; they are typified by an unnamed institution where the teacher of mathematics bears the title of Professor of Civil Engineering and the man who teaches chemistry that of Professor of Chemical Engineering, and having no engineering instruction except some elementary surveying, but still claiming in its catalogue to be an engineering college. While everyone would like to avoid the necessity of accrediting engineering colleges, it cannot be avoided, since the University of the State of New York, and several other agencies, are already doing it. If it cannot be avoided it is best that it should be done by a qualified agency set up by the national engineering societies, so that the results may command respect and general acceptance. It is for this reason, and this alone, that the accrediting committee of the E. C. P. D. has been set up. It is now ready to begin its task, and during-the coming year it will accredit the schools in two of the seven geographical districts into which the country has been divided, beginning with New England and the Mid-Atlantic States.

THE Juneau gold belt is divided into ore-bands of poor definition. The most easterly workings on the , belt, those of the Alaska Gastineau Co., disclosed three separate bands: the Footwall or Ground-hog band, 70 ft. wide; the Perseverance band on which the recent mining was done, also 70 ft. wide; and the No. 2 band, 100 ft. wide. These bands, aggregating 240 ft., are found over a width of 2000 ft. Going toward the west into the adjoining Alaska Juneau ground, four bands have been found which have a total 'right-angle thickness of 755 ft. These bands are convergent in their westerly trend and terminate on the plane of Silver Bow fault. The four bands have better definition at the fault plane than at the eastern boundary line where they enter the property. -Along the property line, the width of the bands and intervening country is 1600 ft., and at the Silver Bow fault this width is reduced to 1300 ft. The distance from the eastern property line to Silver Bow fault is 2400 ft. The bands are slate or slate with metagabbro intrusions, together with gold-bearing quartz masses, stringers, and gash veins. The bands themselves are not all ore, but all commercial .ore is found within the bands. They have no uniform width either in horizontal or vertical section. For permanent structure underground, where rock is not competent, support usually consists of concrete or reinforced concrete. However, temporary supports in the form of timber or steel are often needed during construc-tion. Although the history of rock bolting is relatively short—50 years— their use has become widespread in general engineering construction as well as mining. This profusely illustrated and detailed study covers a broad range in the field of rock belting: from the behavior of rock and bolts including rock properties, masses, and structure; mathematical formulae for rock bolt applications; through analysis of various operations and descriptions of the bolts themselves. Rock construction is one of the oldest of the engineering arts and its origin is lost in antiquity. From the days when early man decided that he wanted to improve the natural caves which he was using for shelter and protection or made a river crossing by placing rocks to form a ford or causeway, we have had structures made of rock. It is not too much to say that rock in situ as a structural material forms part of every major engineering undertaking. Rock bolting is one means whereby the inherently good characteristics of rock in situ are preserved and used to the best advantage and the bad characteristics ameliorated. In many cases the latter are accentuated by construction processes used. Rock bolting, as with other rock construction techniques, is only just beginning to emerge from being an art. Consequently, its theory and practice is still more descriptive than mathematical. ROCK BOLTING In underground excavations, where the rock is not competent, support is provided. For the permanent structure, this generally consists of concrete or reinforced concrete. However, support may be needed during construction before the concrete can be placed, and conventionally this consists of timber or steel support in the form of ribs, struts, and lagging. Alternatively, rock bolts may be used. Although their use dates back over 50 years, it is only in recent years that rock bolts have become widely used, not only in mining but in general engineering construction. A rock bolt is a steel bar which is inserted in a hole drilled in rock. The end away from the rock face has a device which permits it to be firmly an- chored in the hole and the projecting end is fitted with a plate which bears against the rock surface. The bolt is placed in tension between the anchor and the plate, thereby exerting a compressive force on the rock. The essential feature of a rock bolt is that it is placed in tension. This distinguishes it from anchor bars which are grouted into holes in rock, but which are not prestressed. The difference between an anchor bar and a rock bolt when the rock bolt is grouted in is analogous to the difference between the reinforcement in ordinary reinforced concrete and in prestressed reinforced concrete. The view that rock bolts only pin or nail blocks or slabs of rock which are loose to the sounder rock behind them is erroneous. Rock bolts are useful for this purpose and have been so used for a long time. However, the term rock bolting, as used here, means the designed use of rock bolts to reinforce and develop the rock around an excavation into a structural entity which can competently play its part in a structure such as a powerhouse or a mine installation. Rock bolts behave quite differently than steel ribs. They can be installed at the working face directly after blasting and within a short space of time can be exerting a stabilizing pressure on the loosened rock surface. This early installation not only partially restores loosened blocks of rock to their original unloosened positions, but also it prevents the gradual relaxation or loosening of the decompression zone behind the new rock face. In contrast, steel ribs generally use timber blocks, wedges, and lagging between the ribs and the irregular rock surface. The timber is relatively compressible, and loosened blocks of rock must move outwards an appreciable distance before any load builds up on the steel ribs. Also, the ribs may settle as the foot blocks and foundation become compressed. Hence, it may take several days or weeks before the rock has moved sufficiently to make the steel ribs carry an effective load.

A Nere record of Emmons's professional career would very inadequately represent the man. That he was eminent mc know, and our successors will realize in due time; but they must depend upon us for knowledge of a singularly ~vholesome, modest, unselfish personality, and of a character that did honor to a profession in which trustworthiness is indispensable. Those members of the Institute who met Emmons are his friends, and I never knew .one of these who was not the better for that friendship. Emmons was born in Boston, Mar. 29, 1841, the son of Xathaniel H. and Elizabeth (Wales) Emmons, and was named Samuel Frankliri after an ancestor who was of the sarne family as Benjamin Franklin. He took the degrcc of Bachelor of Arts at Harvard in 1861, and soon afterwards went abroad to complete his education. From 1862 to 1864 he attended the courses at the fieole Impkriale des Mines at Paris, Elie de Beaumont arid Daubrke being among his professors. The year 1864-1865 he spent at Freiberg under Cotta and other famous teachers; after which he spent another year in traveling through Europe. Like many other renowned geologists, he approached his ultimate profession from its economic side, and was thus from the first imbued with a sense of high responsibility in the promulgation of scientific opinions or conclusions. With hypotheses which were interesting merely because they were ingenious or even plausible, he would have nothing to do. In 1867 he joined the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel at its organization under Clarence King, serving at first as a volunteer, but soon receiving a regular appointment. This expedition was the first one of purely geological character sent out by the United States government. DURING the year just closed the bituminous industry has been marked by a continuation of the period of low prices and a steady deflation, accompanied by the closing of mines and the consolidation of small units into larger ones. This pro- gram has marked almost every field in the country, and it bids fair to continue for some time. Some figures recently published for Kentucky show that in 1924 there were 660 mines producing 45,147,000 tons; in 1928 the number had decreased to 537, while production had increased to 61,860,000 tons, and a similar movement is occurring all over the country. Prices throughout the early part of the year were very low, but during the fall and winter the prices received are more satisfactory than they were earlier in the year. One of the leading developments in the marketing of coal during the year was the trade practice movement, which began in the Harlan field, and has now been adopted in the Harlan, Hazard, Appalachian, Logan. Williamson and Kanawha fields. The purpose of this movement is to prevent the shipment of coal except on order, and by the publication of price lists to prevent much senseless price quotation. Where it has been practised the longest this movement has resulted in a considerable degree of stabilization, and, undoubtedly, it will help existing conditions very materially if it becomes universal.

SOME of the reactions and procedures upon which modern techniques in the production of metal powders are based were used for 2000 years by the ancients to reduce iron and other metals from their ores. Despite this, however, the art of powder metallurgy is relatively new and probably stems from the introduction of incandescent electric lamp filaments. Attempts to improve upon Edison's carbon filaments led to the production, in order. of metallic filaments of osmium. tantalum.. and finally of tungsten, which ha, replaced the others and is the commercial product of today. These metallic filaments were originally manufactured by the extrusion and sintering of a mixture of the metal or its oxide with a reducing agent which also served as a binder. The Ozark Lead Company operating facilities are located in Reynolds County at the south end of the "New Lead Belt" of southeast Missouri. Development of this wholly owned subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation started in May 1964, with a six foot diameter by 1250 foot deep steel lined shaft. A 20-foot diameter, 1480 foot deep, concrete lined production shaft was collared in March 1968. Production from the facilities began that month and has reached a present average of approximately 6000 tons per day. This paper describes the fully automatic system used to hoist the lead-zinc ore from a depth of 1420 feet to the surface crushing and concentrating facilities, as well as the man and materials hoisting system which allows the lowering of large equipment into the mine. MINING Galena, sphalerite and some copper minerals are found in several mineralized zones of the relatively flat lying dolomite of the "Bonneterre formation". The mineable ore zones vary from 10 feet to 110 feet thick, from 200 feet to 1200 feet wide, and several thousands of feet on strike. Two-boom diesel-hydraulic jumbos equipped with rotary percussion drills are used for both development and production. The jumbos are used principally to open the room and pillar stopes, and a track mounted down hole drill is used to bench in areas where the ore thickness warrants. Explosives used are ANFO, dynamite, and water-jell which are detonated by electric blasting caps. Broken ore (and waste) is hauled by rubber tired transports to chuted transfer raises. Approximately every 500 feet, these raises connect the orebody to the 15 foot by 28 foot train haulage level below. Two twenty ton diesel-hydraulic locomotives haul 160 tons per trip to storage pockets which have a total storage of 1500 tons of material. From these pockets the material is fed over a 6 foot by 20 foot mechanical vibrating feeder which includes one 4 foot by 6 foot grizzly section to a 48 inch by 60 inch jaw crusher. The grizzly and crusher products are transferred horizontally 45 feet on a 48 inch conveyor belt, to one of two 750 ton storage pockets. The material can flow unimpeded into one pocket or be deflected into the second pocket by a movable rock filled hopper. LOADING POCKET The material in each storage pocket is controlled by six lengths of ship anchor chain. The upper end of the 20 foot chain is anchored behind a brow in the pocket, while the lower ends are joined by a header. The lower ends of the chains are raised by two electric powered marine barge winches using 3/4 inch cables. The crusher operator controls the raising and lowering of these chains from a console in the crusher station. The upper and lower travel of the chains is controlled by cams and limit switches on the winch drive. The winches are located within 5 feet of the shaft, and shaft water continually causes problems with the electric components. A malfunction in the upper travel switch will cause the winch to pull the chains into the cable sheave (breaking the cable or sheave), while the lower switch causes the winch to unwind too much rope. Serious consideration is being given to changing the electric motors to pneumatic, since pneumatic motors will eliminate the need of any electrics at the winches. The winches can be "bottomed out" against the sheave without damage to the cable or sheave when raising the chains, and can be allowed to "free wheel" to lower the chains. TUBES may be produced by a large number of forming processes, the most common of which will be discussed analytically in this paper. In no case will the stress analysis for any given tube producing process be derived formally for where such analyses are available, they may be referred to readily. Rather, emphasis will be placed on the interpretation of the theory of the different processes, few of which are developed to a state that will allow rigorous mathematical analyses, in an attempt to give a rational description of the effects of the different variables involved in each method. Tube producing methods can be divided into two groups: Those used to form shells, and those used to further work these shells into a shape more suitable for their final use. Among the first group are included roll piercing, extrusion and cupping for seamless shells, and bending with welding for welded tubes. The re-forming processes include sinking, drawing with a plug, and drawing with a rod. Only the plastic forming operations will be discussed here; other forming processes such as casting shells will not be considered. PRODUCTION OF SHELLS Shells for Seamless Tubing Piercing: The extremely important process of forming an axial hole in a billet by oblique rolling never has been analyzed satisfactorily, although a certain amount of experimental work relating to this process has been conducted. There are a number of factors that make piercing difficult to analyze; one of these is the fact that piercing is not a problem in plasticity, but one in fracturing, and the laws of fracturing are even less well understood than those of plasticity. If, however, it is assumed that fracturing occurs on a surface as a result of tensile stresses acting normal to this surface, piercing can be analyzed qualitatively by examining the stresses established in the oblique rolling process. To determine the origin of the tensile stresses that are thought to effect piercing, it will be necessary to know the angular relationships between the maximum stresses that are established in piercing. These angles quite frequently can be determined in a plastic deformation process by an examination of the deformed product. For example, consider the stresses established when a tensile test is conducted on a rectangular cross-sectional specimen of pearlitic steel. When stretched, this material first flows plastically, exhibiting the well-known yield jog on a stress-strain curve. The formation of the slip areas that give rise to the yield jog can be detected during the straining, since these flowed areas cause depressions on the specimen surfaces which can be seen if the surfaces are polished highly. The plastically strained areas also can be found after the specimen has been stretched to a strain not exceeding the yield jog, by sectioning the test piece and. etching these sections with Fry's etch. (Pittsburg Meeting. March, 1010.) GENERALLY speaking, the practical study of combustion has been made mainly from the stand-point of the steam engineer. This. narrow view-point has left open a large field for scientific research on the application of combustion in other arts, where the conditions of heat-utilization are widely different from those presented in the steam-generator. The great economic importance of the boiler and the ease of measuring its performance, together with the comparative uniformity of conditions in the steam-generator, is, probably, quite largely responsible for the practical neglect of the study of the use of fuels in other arts save only on the basis of their thermal value. Yet these other arts show quite plainly that a thermal-value basis alone is Dot sufficient. For example, in burning lime, under ordinary conditions of firing, a cord of wood will do as much work as a ton of coal, though the latter affords more than twice the number of heat-units. Similar results are evidenced in burning brick, in the roasting of certain ores, in reheating billets, and in many other arts where heat is to be applied over extended areas to fragmental masses of more or less refractory materials. In these arts much is to be gained by a careful study of the application of the heating-agent in the form of the long flame, and in the production of the heat in contact with, or in direct proximity to, the object to be heated. Of necessity, in boiler-practice, combustion cannot be maintained in actual contact with, or in close proximity to, the object to be heated. Speaking in a general way, heat is imparted from burning bodies to things to be heated in two ways : directly, by radiation, and indirectly, by transfer of the sensible heat of hot gases by convection or contact; by conduction from the hot uses. WHEN an Alaskan prospector makes a new mineral discovery he stakes out his claims and then starts prospecting for a near-by landing field. This may be a convenient lake but more often it is a gravel bar along a river, where, by cutting off some brush and throwing the larger rocks to one side and then tying a flour sack to a pole, he may decoy some intrepid aviator into testing it gingerly with the wheels of his plane. It was only a few years ago that .the fence around the baseball park at Fairbanks, Alaska, was taken down so that planes could get in and out of the ball park without ripping off boards. Today the grandstand is lost among the modern hangars which line one side of a modern and busy airport. Planes come and go all during the day, and in summer, when there is no darkness, the night stillness is frequently broken by the hum of a motor overhead. Fairbanks is the hub of interior Alaska and from that hub airplanes radiate in all directions to mining camps large and small. An air industry of comparable size is based at the town of Anchorage, and in fact there are but few towns of more than 200 population in the Territory that do not have one or more planes based there.

IT seems to be in the nature of concepts that they have many meanings, and that the meaning best reflecting the primary interests of a person tends to be accepted by him as the normal meaning of the concept. The concept of ore reserves is no exception, for there is no unanimity of meaning among the several groups of us who are interested in ore reserves, nor even among the individuals of a single group. The groups most interested in ore reserves would seem to include at least the mining industry, perhaps State taxing agencies, and the Federal Government in all its diversified activities, and I would include also the citizenry at large or at least that part of it that consciously thinks about problems-of national welfare. To each of these, and to different individuals within them, the term reserves represents something different, and the farther away the individual or group gets from physical contact with the ore, the more abstract does his or its concept become. It is something different to the policy maker from what it is to the fact-finder or to the miner.

THE total production of all metals in Oregon to date is estimated at $160,000,000; ~115,000,000 from eastern Oregon and $45,000,000 from the western part of the state. In 1916 the metal production of the state was approximately $4,000,000, while the present annual production has dwindled to a little less than $1,000,000. Western Oregon The state of Oregon contains several metal-bearing areas, widely scattered in different regions. More than half of its coast is fringed with a belt of auriferous sands which sometimes are rich in fine gold. A second mining field, the chief producing one of western Oregon, is situated in the southwestern part of the, state and includes Jackson, Josephine, Douglas, Coos and Curry counties. It may be considered as the northern extension of the gold and copper belt of California. A third region in western Oregon is that on the western slope of the great Cascade range in the Bohemia, Blue River, Quartzville, North Santiam and Ogle Creek districts-from the Siskiyous on the south almost to the base of Mt. Hood near the Columbia River on the north.

IN spite of a world production of lead amounting to 1,300,000 tons, of which the United States produces slightly less than one-half, it appears that the mines at present are hardly able to supply the demand. For this there are several reasons. The lead deposits, geologically speaking, were formed comparatively near the surface under conditions of lower temperatures, with the richer deposits often residuary; that is, enriched by surface water, and consequently soon exhausted. Lead is practically absent from a great part of the world. The great Canadian shield, the eastern part of the Dominion, contains practically none. Scandinavia contains no lead. It is absent from geo- logical formations of great age, but does occur in large quantities in the deposits in the Rocky Mountain region. These deposits are, more or less directly, of igneous origin, but here, too, there is a tendency of the lead shoots to concentrate in the upper part, and when they go down the deposits turn to zinc-copper and some other metals. This is one of the best established facts of economic geology. The deposits of the Mississippi Valley district, from Kansas-Oklahoma, to Canada, are in comparatively accessible limestone beds, at a depth seldom more than 500 ft. Therefore, the lead is easily mined but more easily exhausted.

Introduction In the mining industry, comminution typically begins in the mine with a blast of explosive to break rock so that it can be handled by the avail- able equipment. Though the breaking of the rock is essential for material handling in the mine and plant, this is not the only reason for ore reduction in the mineral industry. Comminution is primarily required to liberate minerals from ore so that they can be concentrated into valuable products or to prepare minerals, such as talc, for market as mined. The size of the equipment used for comminution ranges from small to massive. Regardless of equipment size, the power required to reduce the rock is a major expense. Years ago, mineral deposits could be mined more selectively and required less grinding to produce saleable products. However, as richer deposits were depleted, it has become necessary to mine low-grade deposits, with the valuables dispersed throughout the rock. Comminution equipment evolved in physical size and capacities to meet the new mine and process requirements. A modern, modestly sized mining operation, with a capacity of 25.000 TPD may use crushers two stories high weighing over a million pounds, SAG mills 36 feet in diameter driven by dual motors putting out 10.000 horse- power, and ball mills over 16 feet in diameter . Because of the increasing size and weight of modern equipment, the builder is faced with the problems of erecting massive foundations and field assembling equipment on these foundations. As equipment costs and plant construction costs increase, builders are finding that owners are asking for more detailed progress and cost data. Comminution construction projects are generally classified as grass roots plants or expansions or modifications to existing plants. It is estimated that 60-702 of the jobs involve existing plants. Today ' s costs for construction of small, new comminution plants can reach tens of millions of dollars; larger plants can cost hundreds of millions of dollars. IN order to study better the phenomena at work in various phases of diffusion of the Fe/Si system when compounded and alloyed by powder metallurgy methods, several attacks have been planned. Electrical, hardness and other measurements have been discussed e1sewhere.l,2 The metallographic phenomena will be considered here. Concerning the metallography of the ferrosilicon alloys, some initial discussion is in order. As this laboratory discovered to its chagrin, there are many traps that lie in wait for even the experienced metal-lographer when he deals with alloys of high silicon content. Chief of these is probably the anomalous behavior of these materials under conventional etching techniques. We have before us, for instance, Corson's paper" of 1928, wherein is mentioned and illustrated (probably for the first time) the peculiar "barley shell" structure sometimes found in these alloys. Again in 19412 he same author reports the structure in 5-14 pct silicon irons. Houghton and Becker mention its presence' but make only tentative effort to explain it. In 1943, Hurst and Riley6 discussed the "barley shell" and declared it to be a false structure, resulting from the peculiar and characteristic film-forming propensities of the alloy. At about the same time, Wrazej7 proved correct the contentions of Hurst and Riley, establishing pretty well the mechanisms of formation and identifying the constituents involved. Hurst and Riley6 a1so describe in their paper (1943) a "cracked film" structure, also a pseudo-morph, the precise nature of which they do not suggest. Careful examination of such a film reveals that it not only cracks but begins to curl away from the surface of the metal and peel, much in the manner of flaking paint. The careful microscopist will be able to focus on the topmost edge of the flake, and, by optical sectioning, follow it down to the metal surface. We have been able, by oblique illumination of such specimens, to observe the raised segment of the film, the shadow that it casts, and the mating segment on the metal into which it fits. As late as 1946, Hurst and Riley8 found occasion to correct misinterpretation of this "cracked film" structure in a work by others on a 12 pct Si/Fe alloy. The "barley shell" and "cracked film" pseudo-morphs are not the only ones encountered in studies of these materials. A third pseudomorph, which may, however, have some structural significance is a fine striation of the surface. Closely spaced and parallel striae extend entirely across single grains. Each grain shows a different direction for the striae, and different closeness of the spacing. The regularity of this structure, and the fact that the striae do not cross from one grain to another, suggest that the structure is a film cracking controlled in some way by the crystal plane orientation of the surface being etched. In general it is wise for the metallographer dealing with these alloys to cultivate a feeling of uncertainty not only of the more complex questions of interpretation, but also of the basic question of whether that which he sees is indeed a true representation of the structure. We have taken, as a first test of the validity of a structure, its reproducibility "in situ" after repolishing and re-etching of the samples. Thus we knew the "barley shell" to be false (fig. 1) even before encountering the definitive works on the subject. The Metallography of Silicon Diffusion in Laminate Bars: As a first step in the study of the metallography of the diffusion process, we have pressed a series of laminate bars. These bars, or "sandwiches" as we have termed them, were pressed with covering layers of iron powder, and a "filler" of the Fe/Si master alloy under study. The process of leaching silver ores with sodium hyposulphite is comparatively new, and published accounts of the details and losses of the process are as yet very few. The following account of a careful series of experiments to determine the actual loss in this process may therefore be acceptable to members of the Institute. The ore treated was highly calcareous, and the principal sulphide present was iron pyrites. Following is an analysis by Professor Price, of San Francisco, of the ore treated : Per cent. Treated 1000 pounds in a four-hearth reverberatory. 8.30 p.m.—Entered fourth hearth, remaining there one and onehalf hours; sulphur began to burn. 10 p.m.—Changed to third hearth; ore became red-hot half an hour after entering; the fireplace was kept almost destitute of fuel. 2.30 A.M.—Changed to second hearth. Charge continued, giving off a large quantity of sulphurous fume; the fireplace was kept dark.

An open tube vapor phase epitaxial growth system has been used for large area (multiple substrate) growth of GaAs1-xPx on GaAs substrates. The GaCl-GaCl transport reaction is used with either a GaAs or Ga (nonsaturated) source. Selenium and tellurium have been used for donor impurities, and zinc as an acceptor. The useable substrate area in this system is approximately 20 sq cm. The uniformity of thick-ness of the epitaxial layers are typically better than ±5 pct across a given wafer. Electrical and optical measurerments indicute comparable uniformity in electrical and luminescent properties within a wufer. The application of this system to the large scale pro-duction of GaAs1-x Px for display devices, both discrete and arrays, is discussed. Typical electrical and luminescent properties of light emitting diodes fabricated front material produced by this technique are presented. THE most promising materials currently being utilized for visible injection electroluminescence are GaAs1-xPx, Ga1-xAlxAs, and Gap. All have reasonably efficient emissions in the red portion of the visible spectrum at room temperature; Gap also has an efficient green emission.' At present, GaAs1-xPx has a technological advantage over Ga1-xAlxAs and Gap for display applications, since relatively large (several sq cm) areas of GaAs1-xPx suitable for use in electroluminescent devices may be readily grown by vapor phase growth techniques. In contrast, the preparation of Gap and Ga1-xAlxAs for electroluminescent device applications generally employs solution growth techniques which are at present not well suited for the growth of large areas of uniform thickness and doping level. The capability of uniform growth over large substrate areas and the use of multiple substrates is necessary for the practical utilization of electroluminescent devices. This is particularly important when quantity production or monolithic devices are required. Furthermore, in many display applications arrays of light emitting devices are used, the individual elements of which are of a size resolvable by the unaided eye. Thus the overall dimensions of display are substantially larger than those of most semiconductor devices. It is also necessary to achieve a high degree of control over the growth parameters to attain the required degree of reproducibility of materials properties for electroluminescent devices. In the case of GaAs1-xPx it is necessary to accurately and precisely control the phosphorus content of the alloy, both on a macroscopic and microscopic scale, in addition to the parameters generally associated with epitaxial growth such as thickness and doping level. This value is critical, as it has a major effect on the performance of electroluminescent devices. This paper describes the epitaxial growth of GaAsl-xPx suitable for electroluminescent display devices using a system developed specifically for this purpose, and which contains several novel features. The results of studies of selected physical properties of the epitaxial layers are also discussed. Finally, a brief summary is given of the characteristics of display devices fabricated from GaAsl-xPx grown in this system. EXPERIMENTAL A) Reactants. A number of techniques suitable for the vapor phase epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx have been reported in the literature.'-' The method selected for this investigation is that in which the Ga is transported by the GaC1-GaCI3 reaction in an open tube process. The results reported here were obtained using either the combination of GaAs, AsC13, and pH3, or Ga, AsH3, pH3, and HC1 as the initial re-actants.* The ASH3 and pH3 were obtained as dilute *Several different sources of supply were used for these reactants, y~elding comparable results._____________________________________________________ mixtures in HZ; the HC1 was obtained from the reduction of AsC13 by Hz at elevated temperatures. Both selenium and tellurium were employed as donor impurities, and zinc as an acceptor impurity. Selenium was introduced in the form of H2Se, tellurium in the form of tellurium-doped GaAs, and zinc in the form of diethy1 zinc. B) Apparatus. The prinicipal difference between the apparatus used in the present study and that of Tietjen and Amick,8 in addition to size and other related design features, is that RE induction heating is utilized in place of resistance heated furnaces. Induction heating was selected for this application because it appears to have several advantages, including: 1) It is possible to keep all fused silica portions of the apparatus at temperatures well below those of the reaction zone, thus minimizing a possible source of contamination. 2) The thermal mass of an induction heated system can be made small, thus reducing the total time required for the growth process. 3) Sharp temperature profiles (desirable for high deposition efficiency) are easily achieved. 4) The volume of the system for a given substrate area can generally be made smaller than a comparable resistance heated unit.
