RECENT announcement of further restrictions on gasoline consumption in the Mid-West and Southwest has focused public attention on current discussions of an oil scarcity. Conflicting arguments are advanced on the one hand that we have plenty of oil and will not need to restrict consumption as soon as transportation facilities are adequate, and on the other hand that a great impending shortage will require most drastic reductions in civilian consumption in order to provide adequate supplies for military purposes. Data can be presented to support both views, the result being that the public is confused and uncertain of where the truth lies. For a nation with about half of the known crude-oil reserves of the world and two thirds of the total production it seems almost incredible to the layman that any shortage can exist. Those familiar with estimates of future demand. however. show increasing concern regarding our ability to meet military demands without further restrictions in civilian use or wasteful production from our remaining reserves. Only by considering such facts as are available and can be made public can a true appraisal be made of whether or not we are faced with a shortage that will amount to a crisis in crude oil.

THOSE acquainted with the fundamental differences between the, educational .systems of Great Britain and. the United States would hardly expect .the training of men for the petroleum industry to proceed along the same lines- in the two countries. The youth entering an English university is, except in the case of-the student from some of the British colonies or from foreign countries, almost invariably a product of the English "public school." This is in no sense comparable .with the American public school. It is a private institution, frequently of considerable age and heavily endowed. In many aspects it seems to be comparable with the American preparatory school. Yet to some extent its activities remind one of the first years of the undergraduate: course in the American college. Certainly it takes to-itself many of the social, functions of the American college.

INSTITUTE HEADQUARTERS, Hotel Statler. On Monday evening, Oct. 28, 1912, the visiting members and guests were informally received by the Local Committee at the Headquarters of the Institute at. the Hotel Statler. The evening was very pleasantly spent in renewing old acquaintances and friendships and in forming new ones. The first session, held Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, 1912, in the impressive Assembly-Room of the hotel, was called to order by David T. Croxton, Chairman of the Local Committee. Mr. Croxton introduced the Hon. Newton D. Baker, Mayor of Cleveland, who extended a cordial welcome to the members and guests present. James F. Kemp, President of the Institute, who subsequently presided at the meeting, responded in behalf of the Institute.

IT has long been accepted that blast-furnace practice varies to some degree with the coke used. While the qualities desirable in iron have been known for some time, the qualities in coke that produce such iron have not been established. There are no objective standards for blast-furnace coke, which is usually described in general terms, as good or bad. Many experienced operators believe that coke cannot be measured objectively except by using it in the furnace, noting the result, and labeling the coke according to furnace operations. This is admittedly unscientific, and besides is useless for the two main purposes for which a measure of coke quality is needed: (I) to produce the best possible coke from the coals and equipment on hand; (2) to test new coals and determine their value for blast-furnace coke. In seeking such an objective measure, much work has been done on tumbler tests, shatter tests, sizes of coke, porosity, specific gravity, reactivity or combustibility and other tests, but as yet very little has been published in which conclusive correlations have been established between such objective measures and furnace operation. In our study of the problem during the past 8 years we have developed no new measures of coke quality, but we have collected data that are presented here in the hope that they may assist in further work, so that at some future time there may be developed such positive measures. The purpose of this paper is to show that there are variations in coke and that such variations do influence the operation of blast furnaces. At the same time we must remember that there are variations in blast-furnace operation and it may be the blast furnace that is at fault. This correlation of coke properties with blast-furnace operation will be worked out in the following steps: I. Discussion of a period when a change in the coke resulted in an increase in efficiency on one furnace and a decrease in efficiency on another. 2. Adaptation of the inefficient furnace to the available coke so that normal efficiency was restored. 3. The use of radial distribution: a discussion of the effect of size of ore layer in adapting blast-furnace operation to the coke. 4. An example of a change in size of coke and the detrimental influence on the production of one furnace. 5. An example of a change in size of coke, together with manufacturing data, to show why it changed, the conclusion being that coke is a product with an optimum value. 6. Illustration of the fact that coke has different optimum values on two furnaces, with discussion on adaptation of operation so the optimum values will be the same. 7. Limitations of the use of screen tests as an objective measure of coke quality. 8. Importance of uniformity in coke. AS an evidence of the fact that mines safety is not being neglected even in the remote district of the Philippines, a short account is appended of the organization and activities of the Mambulao-Paracale District First Aid and Mine, Rescue Association, whose headquarters are at Jose Panganiban Cam, Norte P. I. The second annual miner?s safety celebration which is sponsored by the Association was held in Paracale on Sept. 2, 1940. The event is the big occasion of the year when the thousands of employees of the mines in the district meet to compete for prizes and has become a great social function as well.=

Design features and operating methods at the new Ajo smelter are described in detail. Successful operation of a novel method of handling and charging wet concentrates to a deep bath type reverberatory furnace contribute to the daily production of 200 tons of anodes with good results from the standpoint of both metallurgy and economy. THE New Cornelia Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corp. is located at Ajo, Ariz. Large scale mining operations were started at Ajo in 1917, when a 5000 ton leaching plant was put in service to treat the copper carbonate ore that overlaid the sulphide ore-body. In 1924 a 5000 ton flotation plant was built to treat the sulphide ore and the leaching operation was abandoned a few years later. Changes in practice and additions to plant facilities have resulted in a gradual increase in the milling rate which now approaches 30,000 tons daily. Prior to the erection of the Ajo smelter, flotation concentrate was shipped by rail to Douglas, Ariz, where it was treated in the Phelps Dodge smelter. Construction of a one reverberatory furnace smelter to produce an average of about 200 tons per day of copper anodes at Ajo was started early in 1949. Initial heating of the reverberatory furnace was begun on June 21, 1950. Charging the furnace was started on july 8, and the first anodes were cast on July 14. Neither the anode furnace nor the reverberatory furnace has cooled since the initial firing. Fig. 1 is a photograph of the new smelter. Built primarily to eliminate the '300 mile haul of concentrate to the Douglas plant, the new smelter was designed to treat the Ajo concentrate, with a minimum of capital investment. A novel, and relatively simple, method of concentrate handling and furnace charging made unnecessary the installation and operation of expensive storage facilities and reclaiming equipment, and obviated the necessity of holding in storage large quantities of copper-bearing materials. (Patents are pending in the United States and abroad on the Ajo process.) In the selection and arrangement of equipment, consideration was given to the full utilization of all smelting facilities, reducing the amount of idle equipment to a minimum. The layout of the smelter is shown in Fig. 2. The important problem of internal transportation was minimized by arranging the reverberatory furnace, converters, and anode furnace in a compact group and providing storage bins inside the smelter building, within reach of overhead cranes, for fluxing materials and other supplies needed in the daily operation. This can be seen in the sectional view of the smelter given in Fig. 3. Incorporated in the design were many innovations in smelting equipment intended to facilitate operations and effect economies in maintenance expense and manpower requirements. Table I gives operating data of the entire plant. Metallurgy The metallurgical practice at Ajo is based essentially upon the use of a single, deep bath reverberatory furnace for smelting wet concentrate, without concentrate storage facilities. The large reservoir of slag and matte maintained in the furnace serves to equalize, to some extent, the day to day variations in the nature and grade of concentrate and permits

CHARLES H. FULTON, chairman, presided at the first session of the Mineral Industry Education Division on Wednesday morning. Reporting for the program committee, Edward Steidle, its chairman, pointed out that its function was not to arrange programs for meetings but to plan a program for the Division to follow in the development of its activities. This was appropriately followed by presentation and discussion of his paper, "Basic Trends in Mineral Industries Education," which, being available in printed form, was only presented in oral abstract. Jay A. Carpenter submitted interesting written discussion that was read, in his absence, by A. M. Smith. Most of the morning was devoted to the discussion of the paper, which was too extensive and ranged too widely to attempt to report in much detail. H. T. Mann, H. P. Hammond, Cadwallader Evans, C. H. Fulton, T. T. Read, D. F. McFarland and P. B. Bucky joined in the discussion, Mr. Hammond making a plea for more unification in mineral industry education, saying that in the study he made for the Society for Promotion of Engineering Education about 35 different curricula preparatory to work in the mineral industry were discovered to exist. He felt that most of the needs of the mining industry could he met by men who had had four years of engineering training of good enough basic quality to permit them to advance along special lines. However, there was apparently a growing demand, as reflected by the increasing number of candidates for the Master's degree in engineering, for men with more thorough training in the fundamentals.

Since 1915, when Elk Basin field was brought in, eight oil fields have been developed in Montana and the production has arisen from 50,000 bbl. in 1916 to 8,000,000 bbl. in 1926. The production for 1927 was 5,121,600 bbl. and the total up to the end of 1927 was 27,138,239 barrels. The eight fields, with their year of discovery are: Elk Basin, Carbon County (1915); Devil's Basin, Petroleum County (1919); Cat Creek, Petroleum County (1920); Soap Creek, Big Horn County (1921); Kevin-Sunburst, Toole County (1922); Lake Basin, Stillwater County (1924); Pondera, Pondera and Teton counties (1927); and Bannatyne, Pondera and Teton counties (1927). About 170 wildcat wells have been drilled in the state of which 8 were successful and 162 gas wells or dry. Hence, only one out of 21, or 5 per cent. of the wildcats have been successful. The average depth of the wells has been 1600 ft. and the average cost $32,000 apiece. • Up to Jan. 1, 1927, a total of 1376 wells have been drilled in the producing oil and gas fields of the state, of which 904, or 66 per cent., were successful oil wells; 82, or 6 per cent. were gas; and 390, or 28 per cent, were dry. The percentage of dry wells is excessive as compared to the wells in other states, due to the uncertainties of limestone reservoir rocks. The total production of oil to Jan. 1, 1927, has been 22,016,639 bbl. and of gas 7,265,330,000 cu. ft. The average price at the well for the oil has been $1.47 per bbl. and for gas about 4 c. per 1000 cu. ft. The value at the point of consumption has been about 23 c. per 1000 cu. ft. The total revenue derived from crude oil has been $32,277,119, and from gas 8350,613, or a total income to the producer of $32,727,832. Each well drilled in the state has already (to Jan. 1, 1927) averaged a return of over $21,000. The total number of domestic (Montana) oil and gas companies organized, since the first in 1885, has been 844, of which 702 are still alive and 142 dead. Oil and gas companies registered for operation within the state to Jan. 1, 1927, but with outside charters, are 143, of which 66 are alive and 77 are dead. Many fields have been zoned by nature with shales and intermediate waters between oil zones. Limitations thus imposed have been the basis on which a field was developed. In contrast thereto, in the Ventura Avenue field, nature proved more generous. Always expecting to find such similar limitations, operators drilled deeper and deeper into the oil zone without finding any distinctive shale bodies other than the Gosnell shale and only one intermediate water, which became the point below which the final water shut-off of each well was made. Thus, on top of the structure, about 3300 it. of oil-bearing zone has been penetrated below this intermediate water—a distance of 4000 ft. below the Gosnell shale. At first it seemed that the greater penetration in the zone, the better the well. The error of this assumption became evident as time passed. Other pressing attendant problems requiring consideration also developed. In the spring of 1929, the Associated Oil Co., still having a large undrilled area, adopted a method for developing this land by dividing the oil formation into zones, so as to drill two classes of wells and to prepare for others, if conditions in the future justified or required such action. Wells now completed are considered as permanent completions in the zone or class for which they are drilled, and are not looked on as a ready means for deepening or accepted as a temptation for deepening to get some flush production quickly. Provision has also been made to avoid future water problems. The most striking demonstration resulting from such work is the fact that the top of the structure is far from being the point at which the largest oil recovery is made. Wells on the flank of the structure invariably produce with lower gas-oil ratios and secure much larger oil production. THIS gold problem is full of complications and can hardly be handled adequately or comprehensively in any short period of time. Perhaps I might begin by mentioning a few aspects of the subject about which I suppose there will be no disagreement. The first of these is that we already have a stock of monetary gold in the United States far in excess of what is needed to support any desirable increase in the present volume of currency and credit. The second is that this already superabundant gold stock is certain to be considerably enlarged during the course of the war, and presumably during the months of readjustment following its conclusion. Some billions of additional gold, we may reasonably presume, will come into the country during these next few years, thus increasing the aggregate monetary gold stock from the present eighteen billions to perhaps twenty- two or even twenty-five billion dollars.

THE graduating class whom I am particularly addressing are going into the world at least a month earlier than normal, because of the war. You have been free to choose your work. You have chosen to be mining engineers. The principal importance of your engineering education to date has been in teaching you how to think and how through books to have ready access to the accumulated experience of previous generations, as well as the current experience of the day. You should by now have acquired something of the engineering point of view, the open skeptical mind. the power to observe, experiment, and draw conclusions, form theories and test these by further experiment, and weigh the inherent probability of conclusions drawn by others. I am asking you today to consider certain facts and the conclusions I am drawing from those facts.

For every single BOF heat, the steelmaker must control the refining operation in order to satisfy at turndown the following conditions : - to reach the correct steel analysis (C, S, P, ...) in the shortest time possible, i.e. without reblow; - to maintain the temperature of the metal in a narrow range; - to produce the optimum steel weight. It is obvious that during refining limited time and scarce information are available and only very few corrective actions can be taken. For this reason, it is of the greatest importance to facilitate the control of the BOF process by taking adequate measures before and during charging of the converter. These are : - the availability of accurate and reliable equipments for the classical measurements, 5.e. weights, temperatures, flow-rates, analyses, etc... - the operation of an optimal charge calculation model which takes into account all information concerning the preceeding heats and the charged materials. '

The cost of shipping British coal by water to domestic and ex- port users has been expensive. The traditional transportation system functioned as follows: coal in up to 50 different grades was accumulated in railway cars at several loading ports; on the arrival of a vessel, cars were dumped in the desired order to produce the required blend. It was a direct rail- road-to-water interface. Railroad freight was high because of the poor utilization of the large number of small (14, 18 or maximum 28-ton capacity) hopper cars required. Ocean freight was high because the ships were small, mostly on the order of 1500-3000 dwt and even these took a long time to load. Assembling and loading larger cargo presented a challenge in logistics to the ports, the railways and the coal washeries. The accommodation of larger bulk carriers was hampered by a tidal range of up to 24 ft which led to the development of impounded harbors, with locks that limit the size of vessels.

MAN?S desire to harden metal is older than recorded history and obviously would date from the moment when he found his implements were not equal to the demands of service. This need for hardness in metal may be divided roughly into two main classifications: (1 :I need for hardness through- out-for purposes of greater strength or elasticity of the whole implement or member, and (2) need for surface hardness alone. A strong steel needed to transmit stresses or resist de- formation is an example of the first class. In metals only surface- hardened, the chief need is for resistance to wear. Obviously the whole gamut of all uses can be imagined- from the extreme of a simple cantilever supporting a load in space to that of a solidly supported face plate serving to resist wear. It is the in- creasing of wear resistance which I propose to discuss.

The hydrostatic tensions in pure metals and long freezing range alloys are evaluated theoretically considering the viscous flow of residual liquid and the general plastic collapse of the casting. The former mechanism operates until the radii of the remaining liquid channels are of the order of 10-3 cm radius, after which the second process limits the attainable negative pressures which range from —1500 to -4200 atm for nickel, aluminum, copper, and iron. In previous reports1'2 the maximum possible hydrostatic tensions developed during solidification have been evaluated employing spherical symmetry. This inevitably involves the concept of totally confined liquid regions, the reality of which has recently been brought into serious doubt3 following observations of the freezing of various transparent materials. Regions of interdendritic liquid which are apparently about to be isolated by the growth of dendrite arms are observed not to be cut off because the advance of the dendrite tips is arrested until the region has completely solidified. Although this may be the result of the very low melting point liquid available at this late stage in freezing, or the result of a higher rate of heat transfer to the dendrite tips because of the acceleration in liquid flow rate near the completion of solidification, this point need not concern us. In this paper an attempt is made to approximate more closely to real conditions; thus the assumption of confined liquid regions is abandoned and cylindrical symmetry adopted. It has also been necessary, therefore, to consider the viscous flow of residual liquid through the remaining channels in the pasty zone. Furthermore, the rather special conditions of spherically symmetric solidification led to extremely high solidification rates and hence unusually high tensile stresses as solidification neared completion; the cylindrical Symmetry appears to yield solidification rates and stresses which are more typical of real castings. The rate of solidification is first considered since this critically affects both the flow of the liquid and the creep of the solid.

(Presented by invitation at a meeting of the Spokane Local Section of the institute, Feb. 17, 1912.) THE Pilares de Nacozari mine is located in Sonora, 75 miles south of Douglas, Ariz. The town of Douglas is on the International Boundary and is the place at which the ores from the Bisbee mines are smelted. The Moctezuma Copper Co. owns the mines at Nacozari, and the copper-concentrates shipped to the Copper Queen smelter, at Douglas, make a good smelting-mixture with the Bisbee ores. The Moctezuma Copper Co. and the Copper Queen smelter at Douglas, as well as the railroad from Douglas to Nacozari, are owned by the Phelps Dodge Co. The ore-deposit occurs in the form of a large ellipse with a major axis of approximately 2,000 ft. and a minor axis of about 600 ft., the major axis bearing about 90 W. of N. The whole of this ellipse is more or less mineralized; the surface being principally an iron gossan with some occasional copper-stains. Below the oxidized zone, which is not more than 50 ft. deep, the minerals are pyrite and chalcopyrite, with occasional seams of chalcocite, the latter being rare. There appears to be no well-marked zone of secondary enrichment, the oxidized gossan over the greater part of the deposit changing suddenly to what is apparently the original unaltered ore. The copper-values are concentrated around the perimeter of the ellipse, and it is principally around this perimeter that the mining is done. The ore mined averages a little more than 3 per cent. of copper, with a small amount of silver, less than an ounce per ton. Some ore of considerably higher grade than this has been shipped, however, but the above average is of the mill-run. The ore is wider near the two ends of the ellipse than along the sides, and is mined in some cases to a width exceeding 200 ft.
