A Bayesian decision model of minimun risk, based on the probability and costs of mine discoveries and non-economic projects, is presented for massive sulphide exploration in the Canadian Shield. The sample used for the model is composed of data relating to forty mines, sixty non-economic sulphide occurrences, and sixty occurrences of graphitic and pyritic material. These economic and barren samples consist of drill-tested occurrences which were, in varying degree, characterized by conductivity anomalies. Given the large size, the reliability and the homogeneity of the data base available for massive sulphide exploration, it is shown that certain statistical models can and should be utilized as a tool for decision-making by explorationists. Given this data base, information theory tells us that only those signals that are independent of one another will transmit information with minimum error. An ensemble of six significant multilevel signals, markedly independent of one another and consisting of numeric and geometric form descriptions derived from Bouguer anomaly, aeromagnetic and physiographic maps, were identified and evaluated by case studies. The use of these signals as input in a simple statistical procedure, or in a carefully planned and experienced visual appreciation scheme, can be of significant aid in decisions concerning the choice of favourable areas or sectors to explore in detail. The method of discriminant analysis is theoretically and practically suited for the statistical modelling involved. By way of a simulation on our statistical model, the efficiency of the model and of the underlying criteria is determined for historic cases and, by inference, for its validity in future exploration. An approximate optimized solution is derived from the model which suggests that over 90% of the known ore could be found by screening, according to a model such as that herein described, and drilling only 30% of the targets (mostly barren) normally identified and tested in current and past exploration.

"This paper describes an alternative method of vehicle control which uses a micro-processor to control the field current and armature voltage concurrently. The field tests carried out and the conclusions drawn from the basis of the paper.IntroductionIt is generally accepted that the main obstacle to a greater use of electric vehicles is the relatively poor range and performance when compared to alternatives such as diesel and petrol-engine vehicles. Much effort has been applied to the problem of increasing the energy storage density of batteries and considerable improvements are now being reported.Improvements in the efficient use of the stored energy, although unlikely to achieve the necessary increase in range and performance for a widespread acceptance of electric vehicles, can nevertheless make a useful contribution. Because the improvement in efficiency is achieved by a reduction in losses, it follows that the temperature rise in drive-train components is reduced. These advantages, coupled with the increasing cost of energy, make improvements in the efficient use of the stored energy desirable, if not absolutely necessary. To achieve this with the large and rapidly varying loads encountered during the operational use of a vehicle will require a more flexible system of control than that provided by the current limit. This paper describes an alternative method of control which uses a micro-processor to control the field current and armature voltage concurrently.The value of these parameters is selected to supply the power demand at the motor shaft, with the minimum losses in electrical transmission, thus increasing the efficiency with which the stored energy is used."

An adaptive steady-state on-line optimizing regulator is proposed as an integrated approach to the control of autogenous run-of-mine milling circuits. This optimizing regulator continuously estimates an internal model of the controlled process, and, based on this, determines mill fresh solids feed rate, mill water flow rate and sump water addition flow rate such that a circuit performance objective is optimized. The dual -requirement of controlling both the mill pulp load and the load of particles of grinding media size is thus directly and simultaneously addressed. The concept and theory underlying the operation of the adaptive optimizing regulator are discussed.

In this paper we apply continuous-time option pricing theory (Dixit 8 Pindyck 1994) to show how to obtain an optimal investment rule for a mining project which requires sequential in- vestments. The application per se is to some extent very simple. The main purpose of the paper, however, is to draw the attention of mining people to how the option pricing theory may be used to capital investment decisions. This topic in economics is quite new but is attracting a lot of attention.

The Smallwood mine, owned and operated by the Iron Ore Co. of Canada, is one of the largest ore producers in Canada, producing about 15 million tons of crude ore per year. Located in the Labrador Trough near, Labrador City, Newfoundland, the open-pit operation has ore consisting chiefly of specular-hematite, with some magnetite. The magnetite content of the ore as a mineral percentage is small, but it is of considerable importance in ore grading because of its effect upon milling. Being harder than specular-hematite, magnetite increases grinding time and milling costs. Specifically, higher grade magnetite (greater than 15%) usually occurs as fine grains in a fine grained siliceous rock matrix (also as larger octahedra in carbonate bands). This tends to increase the overall breaking strength in the crude ore; consequently, the hourly mill rate and the weight recovery decrease. At the same time, because of its relatively high iron content, the magnetite does contribute to the amount of iron in a block of ore. Were the concentration of the magnetite relatively constant, its presence would be of less consequence, for appropriate adjustments could be made in the milling operations. However, the quantity of magnetite present for any run of ore varies considerably; it is the magnetite prediction for a block of ore that constitutes the greatest problem in grading. THE PRESENT ORE GRADING METHOD Ore for the Smallwood mine is graded by a computerized block grading routine (using 50 x 50 x 45-ft blocks) that applies simple weighted (inverse-distance) averaging to ore grades. The results of the block grading program are not reliable with respect to magnetite concentration. Factors responsible for this poor estimation are (1) the structural setting of the deposit, and (2) mineralogical relationships. Neither of these general factors are given adequate consideration by present methods.

SOME eight years ago I became interested to a considerable extent in one of the well-known deposits of sulphury iron ore in New Jersey, and, as a consequence, soon became interested in the subject of the elimination of the sulphur. On investigation I found that no department of pig-iron manufacture had received less attention than that of roasting or calcining ores for the elimination of sulphur, carbonic acid, water, etc. My first devices to eliminate sulphur were naturally in the lime-kiln line, with solid fuel mixed with the ore, in the same way as common lime is burnt with small coal. While this process will succeed tolerably well for carbonates or calcareous ores, even though they contain sulphur as sulphates, I soon found it would not answer for our magnetites, which are very hard and dense, carrying from 2 to 5 per cent. of sulphur as pyrites, and become very sticky as soon as any attempt is made to roast them at a high heat. Some laboratory experiments developed the fact that the nearer the gaseous current surrounding the hot ore approached in composition pure atmospheric air the more rapidly the sulphur was oxidized, while in an atmosphere composed largely of carbonic oxide, carbonic acid, and nitrogen, it seemed almost impossible to reduce the sulphur more than one-half, which was a confirmation of the well-known fact that just one-half of the sulphur in pyrites volatilizes very easily, and that the trouble is mainly to remove the remainder. It was thus apparent that the atmosphere surrounding the ore was of as much importance as the temperature. This led to the trial of a kiln to heat the ore by conduction through the brick. It was divided into ore-chambers, which were surrounded with flues, through which the products of combustion of gaseous fuel passed without coming in contact with the ore. We did not, however, succeed by this arrangement in getting more than a cherry-red heat, which, of course, was too low to accomplish anything. I had at this point become convinced – 1st. That gaseous fuel only would accomplish the work successfully. 2d. That since a high temperature was required to insure a rapid oxidation of the sulphur, and also to make the ore open and porous,

The Úrkút rhodochrosite deposit and Branisko Mn showings (rancieite, manganiferous calcite), located in Lower Jurassic marine sedimentary rocks with black shale, were studied by organicgeochemical methods. Both depositional localities were affected by the Lower Jurassic Toarcian anoxic event. UrkUt shales are rich in organic matter (av. 2.94 wtOJo total organic carbon), the composition of which indicates derivation mainly from marine sources, with some terrigenous component. The shales matured in a bacterially active environment under reducing conditions of diagenesis-catagenesis. Branisko shales (~0.2 wt % TOC) with lenses of Mn oxide ore were weakly metamorphosed and their organic matter thermally degraded. The model for Mn carbonate ore formation envisages reaction of Mn derived from sediments, with carbonate generated by a bacterially mediated process of decomposition of organic matter that also involved Mn reduction.

The laws of throwing and heaping of engineering blast are important for making use of throwing and heaping of thrown body to form certain shape, such as building dams by directional blast. The article is to apply Ballistic theory of single thrown body to take the throwing course of thrown body as the movement of particle system, and then delimit the total of thrown body into units of thrown bodies, and regard the heaping shape of single thrown body as a perfect triangle, and found a quantitative relation between macro-geometry parameters of perfect triangle and designed parameters of explosives. The theory has been adopted in blast practice and gotten good effects.

This paper introduces a technique for incorporating employee participation into the prevention component of a contingency plan. Companies sometimes focus so much energy on response that they forget to put resources into the basics of emergency prevention. The training program discussed here was designed to make employees part of the prevention system. Examples of training materials from the program are provided, a sample method for introducing risk assessment to employees is shown, and a strategy to address limited training time using short videos is explained. Methods for tailoring the training to any worksite and for specific risks are also included. The program is being designed and tested by the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory/NIOSH and employees of an underground coal mine. Examples are taken from the implementation of the program at the mine during the summer and fall of 1998. Results of the program evaluation and lessons learned during the implementation are discussed.

IN view of the many articles that have been written on the proper classification of mining systems without so far having produced any particular tangible results it might seem that the subject is hopeless of solution. I do not believe that is so, and my intention in contributing the following outline is to present a slightly different viewpoint. Too much attention is often focused on unnecessary details and not enough on general principles. Too much attention and emphasis is often given to the system employed at one particular mine or in one particular district. In addition, names that are entirely misleading are applied to mining systems, and their adoption by the coming generation perpetuates a condition that needs clarification badly. The following classification is the result of several years of practical experience in mining and also several years' practice in teaching the same subject. It therefore represents a broad picture of the entire field of mining systems from the viewpoint of the miner as well as the teacher. It seems that the difficulty in the past has been in reconciling these two viewpoints. The need of such a reconciliation requires no explanation.

THE Mining Methods Committee during the past year has spent much of its time developing the interest of members of the Institute in the work that comes under its direction. The response on the part of the membership has been most encouraging and in order to give a concrete form to the program which it hopes to develop, an "Outline for Papers on Mining Methods" has been drawn up and is herewith submitted for consideration. This outline has slowly taken shape until it now represents ideas contributed by a great many men, and it is hoped that it will be suggestive and helpful in the preparation of papers. This program can be used for the preparation of papers covering single large operations or, preferably, as the basis for a description of methods and the presentation of results obtained either in different districts or in different branches of the industry. The Committee presents this outline for the consideration of the various Sections of the Institute with the request that they will endeavor to interest the members of the Sections in covering comprehensively the mining operations with which they are connected. It is not the plan of the Committee to publish a paper on every mine, giving all the details outlined, but rather that an engineer familiar with a district prepare the general information and engineers of each important mine in the district compile the specific information of the mine with which they are connected. The general information and the specific information shall be sent to the Committee, and with this information the Committee will prepare a paper on the results obtained under the various mining methods in the different districts. The Committee requests that all papers shall be compiled under the direction of the Chief Engineer of the company and then submitted to the General Manager before acceptance for publication or compilation and tabulation with other similar data. THE coal-seams that are worked vary from 32 to 100 feet in thickness, and occur at all angles of inclination, but are never flat for any great extent. They contain coal, slate, and an unsolidified coal, called dirt by the miners, in various proportions, a uniform seam of coal alone being rare. The upper walls are composed of conglomerate, sandstone, or slate; the first two hard and solid in texture, and withstanding the action of the atmosphere and moisture sufficiently well to offer but little trouble to the mining operations ; while the latter crumbles rapidly, owing, in part, to the decomposition of iron pyrites which it contains in large quantities, and in part to its own friable character, and requires constant care to avoid accidents to the men working below it, and to prevent its mixing with the coal mined. THIS paper is not intended to be more than a mere outline of the economic geology of Tasmania. It is desired to present in a condensed form the present state of our knowledge in regard to the distribution of the ore, coal, and oil-shale deposits of Tasmania in time and space.Tasmania is exceptionally well endowed with mineral wealth, particularly in the north-western and western districts. THE Bingham area in the West Mountain mining district on the eastern slope of the Oquirrh range, some 28 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, has been the most consistent producer for the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company, production having been continuous, except for minor interruptions, since the organization of the United States Mining Co. in 1899. This production has come from fissures and mantos largely within limestone members aggregating something less than 10 per cent of a thick quartzite sequence of Pennsylvanian age which has been warped into an open syncline plunging northwesterly. Bedding on the easterly limb dips 10°-45° but steep-ens to 90° and even overturns on the westerly limb. Ore bodies cluster about the more northerly of two elongate interconnecting stocks of monzonite which have risen in an axial position within this syncline. Largely within the more northerly of these stocks is the low-grade copper ore body exploited in the Utah Copper open cut of the Kennecott Copper Corp. The values, in seams, minute fracture fillings, and disseminations of pyrite and silica, pervade not only the stock but adjacent sediments, and form a nebulous, sprawling mass which both mineralogically and geographically is the center of the district. Introduction Salt (sodium chloride) occurs naturally either in the solid state as rock salt or in solution as a component of natural brines. It is the major saline constituent of sea water, which contains about 4 percent salt-roughly 164 million tons, or enough to meet world salt demands for five years, per cubic mile. The great rock salt deposits of the world are generally regarded as having been formed by the evaporation of sea water over long periods of rime in wholly, partially, or periodically cut-off bays of ancient oceans. History and Occurrence of Salt in Canada We can speak today of the vastness of Canada's salt resources, but it was not always so. Settlement of our Atlantic seaboard and the Sr. Lawrence valley began in earnest in the early 1600's. The first small commercial salt works in Canada did not come into operation until 1866. Thus, for some two and a half centuries, the inhabitants of this growing country were entirely dependent on foreign sources for every pound of salt they consumed. The record shows that from at !east 1800 onward, the need for a domestic salt industry was clearly recognized by the governments of the day. It was during the Western Ontario oil-boom of 1866 that the initial discovery of rock salt in Canada was made, not far from Goderich, at a depth of 1,000 feet. A salt company was promptly organized, and with their operations there began the gradual and still uncompleted conquest of the Canadian salt market by the Canadian salt industry. Over the next thirty years many holes were drilled into the Salina formation both in Ontario and Michigan, and encountered rock salt. A vast salt-basin was disclosed, approximately outlined, and given the name Ontario-Michigan Salt Basin. The Ontario portion of the basin extends over at least 3,500 square miles, is met with at a depth varying between 800 and 1,600 feet, and has a thickness of 50 to 250 feet. No attempt has ever been made, so far as we know, to calculate the total salt reserves of this basin, but the minimum indicated in the Ontario portion by the figures just cited is just under thirty-five cubic miles. The specific gravity of rock salt is 2.2. From these data, those so inclined may calculate the tonnage.

9:00 a.m., June 28, 1983 MR. MORTENSEN: Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Again, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to another session of the 79th meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute. The thing again that has always been impressive are the activities that we've had so far. The success in the meetings has been delightfully encouraging to all of our committee people. Please welcome the chairman of the session, Charlie Margolf. MR. MARGOLF: Thank you, Vernal. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. It would be my privilege to serve as the session chairman this morning. To allow the maximum time for our speakers, I'll turn the microphone over to Bernie Bernstrom who will introduce our first speaker. MR. BERNSTROM: Thank you. As Vernal mentioned, Dan Jackson will be our first speaker. He is the Western Editor of Coal Age Magazine. Dan really doesn't need an introduction to this group. He's belonged to the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute about 25 years. Dan is a native of West Virginia and he's an ex-coal miner. He graduated form West Virginia University as an electrical engineer and worked for Amherst and West Bending Coal prior to employment by Coal Age Magazine. Back in 1972 Coal Age moved him to Denver from New York City. MR. JACKSON: When Vernal Mortensen asked me speak to the members of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute earlier this year I found it impossible to say no to the guy because of what he has contributed to western coal. Little did 1 know that the subject he had in mind would be entitled, "An Outsider's View of Western Coal." At first I asked myself-I've been associated with the coal industry for some 38 years, 12 years in national operations and 26 years reporting on it. You might say that I've been married to two industries, coal and the business press for 26 years, but today I'll put on my business press hat and try to make an impression of what an outsider might think of western coal. But at the outset, let's get one thing straight: When you say press, whether it's business press, the media or whatever, and you heard some comments yesterday as far as what the media has done .to this industry and there's been some definitions bandied around as to just what an editor is. One of the most recent ones has defined an editor as a person who can talk on any subject with an open mouth. Now that's not my case. Secondly, I don't give long talks. Several years ago I was giving a rather lengthy talk to a group similar to this and it was halfway through the talk when I noticed one guy on my right looking at his watch quite frequently. I didn't mind that too much because all of us do that once in a while, but when he looked at his watch, took it off and shook it, I thought, "My God, better cut short." But for more than a decade western coal has enjoyed substantial annual increases in production from some 30,000,000 tons in 1970 to some 264,000,000 tons in 1981, but 1982 was a different story. We lost about 6,000,000 tons of production in that year. In 1983 it's expected to be a little worse than '82. Coal historically doesn't rebound from a recession as quickly as other industries. It takes about eight to 10 months longer for us to really get moving again and I'm afraid that you'll still have to don your fighting helmets and flack jackets when you go out into the market to sell your product. Western coal, as you know, has problems and al l of them are not going away when the recession ends and they won't go away overnight. I'm sure most of you are aware of what those problems are. Carl Bagge and Jim Harris, along with other speakers, at this meeting have educated us well on those problems and I'm sure you'll hear more from Jim Watt at today's luncheon. If everyone in this room were asked to list three orfourof the most serious problems facing western coal, I'd make book that the total of the answers wouldn't vary by more than 3 to 5%, if that much. But coal is not the only mining segment in the U.S. with problems. Metal and non-metal mining has its share, too. I'd like to step back into the past for a few minutes, if I may, to a time when our problems were just beginning. Since 1979 a third of the nation's mines, including coal, metal and nonmetal have been shut down. The total volume of all mining in the U.S. in that year totaled some $24 billion. Today that figure has dropped some 21 %. The after tax rate on return for mining companies has fallen from 6'/% in 1980 to minus 3% in 1983. But that's really not where our problems began. They began 20 years ago when a profound change began taking place in the U.S. economy. Our economy had been growing at about 2'/-3% annually without exception except for the great depression. Our inflation rate was about I'/%, interest rates were running about 6%, and the federal budget was $77 billion, really great figures compared to today. From 1960 to 1980 the federal budget increased almost 1.000% and taxed paid by individual families increased by 700% during that same period. Despite the huge increases in taxes, the federal deficit kept getting larger and larger year after year and within this 20 year period the national debt climbed to a trillion dollars. Economic progress of this type can't continue indefinitely without some serious consequences. The result of that economy, well, you know what happened and there is a direct relationship of that

"Most geologists and mining engineers, in the course of their professional careers, frequently become involved with the appraisal of metalliferous mineral deposits and develop a familiarity with and standard approach to the evaluation of these deposits. When the same individuals approach the industrial mineral field, however, their usual approach pattern can be rudely disturbed.This paper highlights the difference in appraisal approach and outlines the factors common to both but which have entirely different emphasis. These comprise geological appraisal, analytical requirements, the importance of transportation, marketing requirements and standards, including appropriate allowances for product development, and marketing penetration.Out of these ""different"" considerations, however, a pat-tern or standard approach emerges which is as common to the industrial mineral field as that used either consciously or subconsciously in the metallic field.The paper reviews the different factors and points of emphasis and offers an outline of the common pattern of appraisal for industrial minerals."

In the present context of rapid industrialization, production of Lead-Zinc metals from low grade materials, residues and wastes can make substantial contribution to the supply of these metals in India. Recovery from secondary sources also plays an important role in conservation of mineral resources and lower power consumption. Conscious effort is therefore, required to increase the secondary metals which, besides saving in energy cost will also help in waste material management and keeping environment clean. The major thrust is, therefore, needed in this direction. During all these years, the Indian Lead- Zinc industry has made sustained efforts for recovery of metals from low grade ores and from metallurgical wastes and residues. The paper identifies the treatment of low grade ores by various technologies and techniques and the treatment of metallurgical residues and wastes generated during primary Lead and Zinc smelting in India. Some of the major achievements in past decade have also been elaborated in the paper. The strategies to be followed for continuing treatment of low grade ores and waste materials by adopting newer, environmental friendly technologies, in consonance with the rigid standards being adopted by most of the countries including India. have also been dealt with in the paper.

Augered, cast-in-place (ACIP) piles have been utilized in the United States for a wide range of projects since the 1950's. Due to the cast-in-place nature of the installation method (and lack of a driving criteria); however, ACIP piles have not been readily accepted by some practicing geotechnical and structural engineers. Since ACIP piles were initially developed, the installation equipment and techniques have been improved and refined and the number of experienced contractors has significantly increased. Over the past 10 to 15 years, the pile type has experienced significant growth in the United States (particularly in Florida) because engineers have become more knowledgeable and comfortable with its use. The Miami area, in particular, has experienced considerable growth in the utilization of ACIP piles primarily due to their usage on the $1 billion Miami Metrorail System project in the early 1980s. The economic advantages over other deep foundation types, coupled with some unique installation advantages, have shown that ACIP piles can be a viable foundation alternative on many projects. Even though ACIP piles have gained respect in the private sector, the pile type has generally not been readily accepted by government transportation agencies. The reluctance to readily accept this foundation type stems primarily from the quality assurance aspect of cast-in-place pile construction. Additionally, there has not been much research activity on this foundation type, technical papers, formal associations (other than the DFI), or a concerted effort to standardize the industry. This paper serves to discuss the state of practice for ACIP pile installation in the state of Florida.
