A major tool in the search for petroleum is reflection seismic mapping. The period which has seen most of the exploration in Victoria is also one which has seen major advances in this technology, from 1963 try present day. Seismic mapping can be divided into three interlinked areas - acquisition, processing, and interpretation. In acquisition the major changes have been from an explosive energy source in 1963 to gas exploders in 1968 and airguns in 1970. The number of recording channels has increased from 24 to 192, with digital recording introduced in 1966, and floating point recording in 1976.

Future ore reserves of major gold producers in North America and elsewhere will consist of refractory gold ores. About 60 % of the current U.S. gold production is mined in Nevada. Several of the large gold operations in this state indicate that 40 to 90 % of their future ore feeds will contain refractory gold. To compound problems, average head grades for refractory U.S. gold ores have fallen from 8 - 9 g/mt to about 4 g/mt by 1991. In Latin America, 52 % of the gold operations will require milling for optimal recovery. Deeper reserves are, like in North America, refractory. Particularly in hard, (semi)refractory sulfide ores, many operations may experience substantial decreases of gold recov­ery. For example, Martins et al. (1991) report that at an Austra­lian mine, sulfide ore treatment led to 4 - 10 % lower gold reco­veries as the work index increased from 8 kWh/t to 14 kWh/t and the grind coarsened. Many refractory ores should actually be classified as semirefractory since a fine sulfide fracturing and liberation would make 80 - 90 % of the gold cyanide leachable. However, conventional comminution is often prohibitively expensive for these ore types.

"The development and characterization of sulphide standards containing as many as seven precious metals has increased the efficiency and comprehensiveness of micro-analyses for deportment studies using laser ablation microprobe inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LAM-ICPMS). Because trace precious metals occurring in solid solution or as sub-micron inclusions in sulphides, arsenides, and sulpharsenides are often heterogeneously distributed, a significantly large number of analyses are required. Using well-prepared samples it is possible for up to 120 analyses per day, far more than by other comparable methods. Examples will be discussed from projects focused on the deportment of Au and the platinum group elements (PGE).INTRODUCTIONBecause gold and the platinum-group elements (PGE) occur as both discrete minerals and in trace quantities in a variety of minerals (mostly sulphide, arsenide, and sulpharsenide minerals), specialized trace analytical methods were developed and applied to determine the deportment of precious metals in ore deposits, requiring sensitivities ranging originally from about hundreds to presently tens of ppb for individual precious metal or less.In mineralogical studies, micro-analytical techniques such as the electron microprobe were first applied to obtain analyses for major elements in about 1959-60, but as the instrumentation improved early attempts for PGE in potential carrier minerals indicated that reasonable levels of detection (LOD) were of the order of 300-400 ppm, depending on analytical conditions, X-ray spectral lines, and mineral matrix (e.g., Cabri and Laflamme, 1976). Eventually, the lowest detection levels by electron probe micro-analyses (EPMA) obtained for some PGE were of the order of 10s of ppm using high accelerating voltage and current for extended measuring time on peak and background (Gervilla, Cabri, Kojonen, Oberthür, Weiser, Johanson, Sie, Campbell, Teesdale and Laflamme, 2004)."

The pioneers in pressure hydrometallurgy have provided a solid foundation during the past four decades. The pressure techniques are now capable of being used to push back the frontiers in the winning of metals. Pressure hydrometallurgy has been used to meet the objectives of extracting metals; purifying metal solutions, recovering metals; and rendering waste streams acceptable for disposal to waste repositories and the environment. Some examples of each of these functions are briefly reviewed. The applicability of pressure techniques to the recovery of precious metals is discussed.

The advanced process control has been well received and is utilized well over 95% of the time. In the years since, many lessons have been learned and many advances have been made. INTRODUCTIONRio Tinto’s Kennecott Copperton Concentrator produces copper, molybdenum, gold and silver. The mill has 4 SAG mills (SAG 1-3, 34 foot diameter and SAG 4 36 foot diameter), 8 ball mills and copper and molybdenum flotation plants, as seen in Figure 1. The 2010 average data is shown in Table 1.In 2002, a Metso Cisa OCS Expert Control system was installed at Copperton for SAG and Ball mill advanced control. The expert control was first placed on SAG 2; data from the first few weeks compared with operator performance indicated approximately an 11 percent increase in throughput. After full commissioning, the system was gradually refined further by plant personnel to develop key performance indices based on SAG feed size, refinement of the sound setpoint for control of mill speed and throughput, specific rules to help the adjustment of speed based on loss of a feeder, etc. With the addition of the pebble crushing circuit, the expert control began utilizing a model estimation of crushed pebble bin level to help stabilize the impact of returned crushed and uncrushed pebbles on the SAG mills. As the ore and limitations change, it is necessary to evolve the SAG logic to better handle any constraints."

CanmetMINING has been working on process development for separation and concentration of rare earth bearing minerals from various ores. Among others, the flowsheet development for the Montviel Rare Earths/Nb deposit, located at the north end of the Abitibi region in Quebec and owned by GeoMegA Resources Inc. (GeoMegA) is now at an advanced stage. The concentrate produced by a flotation-only process at the early stage of the project accounted for higher than 90% TREO and Nb recovery in 40% mass. This concentrate was submitted to SGS Lakefield for hydrometallurgical processing. Lixiviation of the concentrate using hydrochloric acid yielded approximately 99 % REE. An overall (from ore in ground to final precipitate) REE recovery of 80% was obtained through a series of selective precipitation steps. Recently significant additional developments have been made. CanmetMINING is steadily improving the quality of concentrate produced through a simplified, more efficient flowsheet which consists of flotation, magnetic separation, and a thermal treatment procedure. The paper discusses aspects of the process that allowed obtaining 82% recovery of TREO and Nb in 16% of mass, the best result to-date.

The lack of visibility near earthmoving equipment resulted in six fatalities in U.S. surface mining operations during 2003. These accidents were the result of either a piece of equipment striking another vehicle or worker, or the equipment traveling over the edge of an embankment. Figure 1 is an example of a recent accident that resulted in serious injuries to one worker and fatal injuries to two others when a van parked in front of a haul truck. Two fatalities occurred in separate incidents when front-end loaders struck workers. Another two workers were killed when their equipment backed over the edge of a highwall or dump point [1]. There is clearly a need to provide better information to equipment operators regarding their surroundings. [ ] Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory, are working to reduce these accidents by developing systems that sense obstacles and changes in terrain near the equipment and provide this information to the operator. Many off-the-shelf proximity warning systems that were developed for automobiles, light trucks, and recreational vehicles were evaluated on off-highway dump trucks [2]. Many limitations were found with existing systems, including frequent false alarms, limited detection range, a lack of specific information on an obstacle (e.g., location, identity), difficulties in finding suitable mounting locations, and an inability to withstand the environment. These limitations have necessitated the development of new systems designed specifically for large, off-highway, earthmoving equipment. New off-the-shelf systems available for mining equipment include radar and tag-based detection systems. Prototype systems now being developed include a proximity warning system based on the Global Positioning System (GPS) and a computer-assisted stereovision system. Development of these new systems was accomplished by working with manufacturers to modify existing systems to meet the needs of surface mining and through cooperative research with organizations to develop completely new solutions. A typical proximity warning system consists of a sensor or antenna mounted on the equipment that detects the presence of obstacles and an alarm interface in the cab of the equipment. Some systems, as described in more detail below, also require that other vehicles and personnel on the ground be outfitted with electronic tags that transmit an “I’m here” signal back to the system (e.g., radio signal detection systems or GPS). Many types of proximity warning systems are on the market, but they are not all discussed in this paper. APPROACH In past work, engineers at NIOSH evaluated several off-the-shelf proximity warning technologies in order to verify their effectiveness on off-highway dump trucks [2]. Dump trucks were chosen because of the number and severity of accidents involving this type of equipment and because extensive blind areas around these trucks are typical. Solvay has developed several novel reagent innovations to improve separations in sulfide ore flotation and address major industry challenges. These innovations include: a) carbon management strategies to reduce the deleterious impact of organic carbon on flotation circuits; b) new collectors for heavily tarnished or oxidized Cu-Au ores; and c) a functionalized depressant for minimizing penalty elements in metal concentrates. Owing to their unique chemistries, these innovations exhibit a wide spectrum of rather unique properties that are quite in contrast to the traditionally used reagents. The chemistry, attributes, application, and advantages of these innovations are discussed in this paper based on laboratory, pilot, and plant results and observations for various ores

Recent research by CRC LEME from an Australian mineral exploration perspective, has focussed on regolith architecture and mechanisms of geochemical anomaly formation, within transported regolith. Methods have been developed for the rapid production of regolith-landform maps which is the starting point for understanding regolith architecture in the third dimension. Methods for development of 3D regolith models are less well advanced, and require integration of all available geological and geophysical datasets, but still with a heavy reliance on drill-hole information. The base of the transported regolith û the unconformity û remains the most important regolith boundary for geochemical sampling in transported regolith terrains. A new generation portable spectral logger, employing a broader spectrum can interpret important features from drill chips within the regolith. This allows internal architecture, redox fronts and the all-important interface to be objectively identified. Transported lateritic components can provide vectors to mineralisation in depositional regimes. Palaeomagnetic and new radiometric methods which date individual phases of the regolith provide evidence of different episodes, each characterised by different geochemical dispersion patterns in transported regolith. Along with lateritic residuum, calcrete is prime sampling medium. Calcrete is probably enriched in gold through physical and biological processes, rather than straight chemical processes. In South Australia, the lowermost calcrete layer buried within the depositional regime, especially where it lies directly over the silcrete layer at the buried interface, is the desired sampling medium. Certain gum trees, with deep roots in transported regolith have been shown to record anomalous values of gold and basemetals in leaves, twigs and bark. Anomalous metals in acid-sulfate soil seeps can also provide a window through sedimentary cover in respect of mineralisation in the basement. A number of Yilgarn occurrences of gold anomalies in transported cover, strongly infer hydromorphic and biological mobilisation of gold. This inference is supported by micro-analyses of regolith mineral hosts in hardpans and mottled sediments, which show gold and pathfinder elements prefer to reside in goethite and specific types of clay minerals. This creates anomalies in specific mineral phases. However the inference that that these are sites of mobile or labile metal ions remains enigmatic. Similarly there is inconclusive evidence that selective extractions will provide an anomaly not otherwise detected by conventional total dissolution methods. Hydrogeochemistry is a promising exploration tool for basemetal exploration. The importance of microbes in both the dissolution and precipitation of gold in the Australian regolith is demonstrated. We are on the verge of identifying the functional gene sequence of individual active microbes. A consideration of possible mechanisms for creating anomalies in soils above transported regolith, presents difficulties in facilitating upward movement of ions from the watertable to the surface. Perhaps the best avenues of research lies with surrogate soil gases, and biotic transfers.

Stress, gravity loading, rock strength, geology, pore pressure, weather effects, underground workings, and many other factors contribute to slope instabilities that range from small rock falls to massive slides of material. While some of these failures can be predicted or controlled by preventive measures, each year many completely unexpected failures occur. Current methods for monitoring generally involve measuring displacements at a few, selected points in and around the suspected area of instability. While most of the displacements along these points will be in a downslope direction, freeze-thaw cycles of water-filled joints, horizontal stresses or pressure, buoyancy in saturated soils, human measurement errors, or other situations can produce deformation in almost any direction, even without any instability in the slope. Determination of which, if any of the observed movements represents a potential hazard is essential. Because of the enormous surface area of many large open-pit mines, several varieties and scales of instability can occur. Small, unexpected rock falls may indeed be more hazardous than a massive failure that involves slow displacement of material over a longer period of time. Complete vigilance to detect all small potential falling blocks is neither feasible nor economical and certainly is not attainable using today's most common point displacement monitoring techniques. As part of an on-going study at the Spokane Research Laboratory, several new methods for monitoring slope instabilities are being investigated. This paper describes the potential adaptation of systems such as interferometric synthetic aperture radar, imaging spectroscopy, and time-domain reflectometry, to slope monitoring and design.

The Xitieshan lead-zinc deposit is located in the north margin of the Qaidam Basin, Qinghai Province, China. It is one of the largest massive sulfide deposits in China and is supposed to be of the sedimentation-exhalation (SEDEX) type. Based on the main ore mineral and sulfur isotopic compositions in sulfides found in the wall rock, the S of the deposit is considered to originate from the mantle, but the fluid potentially mixed with sea water during the hydrothermal circulation exchange. The study of lead isotopes shows that the metallogenic material is characterised by the mixture of orogenic and upper crust sources. The lead isotopic signature of the wall rock is similar to that of the ore, which shows synsedimentary characteristics. According to the composition of the rubidium and strontium isotopic signature, the value of 87Sr/86Sr is lower than the average value of that in the crustal rock, which is larger than that of the mantle. Hence, the metallogenic materials of this deposit mainly originate from the crust, which is related to materials of volcanic rocks activation and migration of the deep hot circulating water. The process of the metallogenic fluid circulation shows continuous interaction with crustal material and lead to continuous enrichment of the ore forming fluids. From the study of the fluid inclusion microthermometry of the ore and the associated minerals combined with the C, H-O, Si isotopes, it is believed that the metallogenic fluid is mainly coming from the mantle or the deep magma chambers. The rising deep fluid then mixes with the sea water. The carbon dioxide escaping and mixing with sea water during the hydrothermal exhalation process leads to the rapid precipitation of the hydrothermal fluid to deposit metal. That is proposed as the principal formation mechanism of the Xitieshan deposit. Since the announcement of early experimental work on rotating magnetic field (RMF) separation at the Sixth Mill OperatorsÆ Conference in 1997, the concept of RMF separation has been developed and tested further, and a range of separator designs is now being developed for the mineral processing industry. Shortened, but full diameter, prototypes of these designs are now available for test separations. The main advantage of RMF low and medium intensity attraction separation is the significant reduction in particle entrapment. This reduction is so significant that RMF separators are capable of operating very close to their theoretical limit for separator precision. This makes small laboratory RMF attraction separators ideal for low to medium intensity magnetic sample analysis, and larger separators ideal for applications requiring sharp magnetic susceptibility splits. Feedrates and separation rates are comparable to those of conventional attraction separators. Although RMF attraction separators are now well advanced in development, RMF rotation separation is still in the early experimental stage. The exception to this is the dry particle rotation eddy current separator that offers eddy current separation of small non-ferrous metallic particles from about 2 mm down to about 100 microns. Wet small particle eddy current separation is also possible, but has not yet been developed to a practical stage.

The paper describes recent advances in the technology for mapping of the seabed with acoustic instrumentation. These instruments are typically single beam echo sounders, multibeam echo sounders and high resolution sub bottom profiler. For the single beam echo sounders, new features for deep water mapping are described, as well as the possibility for combining investigation of shallow areas with side scan sonar and vertical echo sounding in the same instrument. Multibeam echo sounding technology for deep and shallow water is reviewed, and some new high resolution instruments using dynamic beam focusing is presented. The sediment profiling technology deals with a novel design for high resolution sub bottom profiling, based upon a Mills Cross transducer with resolution as good as 3 degree in its largest configuration and a frequency range of 2,5 ? 7 kHz. Remarkable features of the system are a very high ping rate even for deep water, and the capability to map buried objects or structures by several simultaneous beams. Some results obtained with the first installation on the French research vessel ?Beatemps Beaupré? are presented.

The advances in seismic design considering soil-structure interaction or soil-pile-structure interaction are described using a substructure approach. The nonlinearity of soil is considered approximately using a boundary zone model with non-reflective interface, and computer programs are available for practical applications. The validation of model is confirmed with dynamic tests on piles in the field, and the results for a single pile are used to compare with the predictions in this study. The liquefaction for sand soil layer can be accounted for, and a case of liquefaction is discussed. Two practical examples are examined, a vacuum tower structure supported on foundation of steel pile group and a table top structure supported on foundation of concrete pile group. To illustrate the effects of soil-pile-structure interaction on the seismic response of vacuum structure, different base conditions are considered, rigid base, i.e. no deformation of the foundation; linear soil-pile system; and nonlinear soil-pile system. The method introduced can be applied to the design of tall buildings, bridges, industrial structures and offshore platforms with soil-pile-structure interaction under seismic or dynamic loads.

Selective flocculation enables the production of high-brightness kaolin products from kaolin ore once considered too poor in quality for beneficiation into paper-coating pigments. Anatase, Ti(1-X)FeXO2, with X = 0 to 0.05, is a common iron-bearing impurity in sedimentary kaolin that can be unresponsive to kaolin beneficiation processes, such as magnetic separation, due to its extremely fine particle size (<0.3 µm), or chemical bleaching, because of its chemical stability. Described here are selective flocculation technologies that separate anatase by flocculating anatase or flocculating kaolinite from dispersed slurries. Applying the advances in the chemical and mechanical dispersion of ultrafine particles and the selective aggregation of kaolinite or anatase particles have resulted in the selective flocculation processes practiced today that have increased process recoveries from those technologies practiced beginning in the 1960s.

"Monitoring compound semiconductor crystal growth using multifrequency eddy currents for sensing illustrates some of the extreme problems of measurement and interpretation that are not often seen in metallic systems. Using sensor arrays and scanning sensors have produced a qualitative and quantitative understanding of some of the high temperature electrical conductivity mechanisms in several compound systems. A detailed review of the CdTe/CdZnTe data is presented showing some of the complexity in the data as opposed to what is found in elemental semiconductors.HistoryThe most common goal in the use of eddy current measurement in crystal growth is to deter-mine the curvature of the liquid solid interface during growth to test if the heat transfer estimates of the thermal design were adequate for single crystal growth[l]. This aim could be met but represented only a small fraction of the data that was produced observing a growth cycle. A secondary consideration was what could be discovered in the recorded data about the growth and subsequent heat treatment as the boule cooled. This is usually a more difficult task because a crystal growth process is not a controlled experiment so much as a process that continually sees modification. Using a sensor arrays or a scanning loop has produced a qualitative and quantitative basis for understanding some of the high temperature electrical conductivity mechanisms. The implication of the these measurements of electrical conductivity variations are important in that they reflect the complex defect states that will occur on cooling and heat treatment following crystal growth. In contrast to the complex behavior of the conductivity of these compound semiconductors in the solid and liquid state we have the very well characterized system silicon to compare. Initially the interest on using eddy currents to monitor compound semiconductors came from G. Westphal at the Texas; Instruments Company in 1987 to monitor aspects of growth and compounding of GaAs. This was followed by work on solution growth of HgCdTe with D. Witter. The initial interest in the use of eddy cur-rents for monitoring CdTe crystal growth came from Prof. Wilcox at Clarkson University in the practical interest to determine and control the crystal interface curvature during vertical brigdeman growth. The first actual work was done by one of his former students. G. Neuge-bauer at the II-VI Corporation which was carried on by G. Rosen at Clarkson and R. Shetty at II-VI Corporation and with A. Socha at Johnson-Matthey Electronics. The work on CdTe extends over four years and yielded sufficient data to allow one to evaluate the utility of the information produced as compared to what could be obtained from monitoring an elemental semiconductor such as silicon."
