"In the present study, the effect of organic/inorganic (hybrid) polyacrylamide polymer on fine coal flotation was investigated. Raw coal samples contain about 37% of ash-forming mineral at a feed size of -75 + 38 um were subjected to flotation tests in the presence of in-house synthesized hybrid Al(OH)3-PAM at different polymer dosages and pH values. Results show a significant improvement in both combustible recovery and ash rejection at 1 ppm polymer dosage. Further improvement of combustible recovery was obtained when flotation was performed at pH 5. Interfacial properties of coal particles before and after flotation were examined through electrokinetic (zeta potential) measurements of coal/water slurries. Zeta potential vs. pH curve were established and compared. In the case of raw coal/water slurry, zeta potential-pH curve resembles the ash-forming minerals (silica and clays) more than coal. After Al(OH)3-PAM-assisted flotation, the zeta potential of froth/water slurry shifted to more positive values point which strongly indicates significant removal of ash-forming minerals from coal by Al(OH)3-PAM. INTRODUCTION Coal has been a major commodity in meeting the world energy demand during the past several decades (Milici et al., 2013). According to the international energy agency, global coal demand will continue to increase for the coming decades. With increasing world population, the global electricity demand would also increase as more people would get access to basic electricity especially in developing countries (Maggio & Cacciola, 2012). Due to this increase in energy consumption, operations in coal mining and beneficiation processes have been highly mechanized to meet the demands. This mechanization has increased the quantity of raw fine coal particles produced which contain high amount of ash-forming mineral matter (slimes). Aplan et al., have reported that the major constituents of ash-forming minerals in U.S.A coal are clay minerals such as kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite (Aplan, 1997). Conventional froth flotation for fine coal cleaning suffers mainly from two major problems: 1) Low recovery of ultrafine coal particles due to slime coating by ash-forming minerals, and 2) The lack of selectivity, which results in the flotation of middlings and entrainment of mineral fines in the froth (Polat et al., 2003). Slime coating on both valuable and air bubbles have been proposed to explain the observed reduction in flotation recovery especially when fine grinding is required. In this case mineral matter may be degraded to extremely fine or colloidal sizes thereby creating difficulty in the water clarification process such as flotation. Slimes inhibit bubble-particle attachment, and increases reagent consumption due to the increase in solid/liquid interfacial area, resulting in low coal recovery."

One of the most difficult items to justify economically on any budget is a training program. The costs can easily be identified--primarily the cost of the program and the inconvenience and cost of filling in for the men taking the training by working other personnel extra hours at overtime rates. Operating efficiency, higher productivity, increased plant availability, development of confidence, improvement in morale and less absenteeism are only a few of the benefits which far exceed the costs. A good preparation plant training program can accomplish more in 5 weeks than can be accomplished in five years of on-the-lob operation. During recent years, coal preparation plants have become more sophisticated and complex as the specification for coal used by electric utilities in their power plants have required improvements in coal quality to adhere to air quality regulations and to improve boiler performance and reliability.

The world-famous Sang Dong Mine in the Republic of Korea has long been one of the world's greatest tungsten ore deposits. Over the years, the development of the Sang Dong deposit has steadily increased to a point where it now exerts a great influence on the world tungsten market. The mine is located in the mountains of the province of Kang Won Do, approximately 150 miles by road due east of Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea. In recent years the transportation system in Korea has greatly improved and the mine is now serviced by an excellent secondary type road from the new railroad line which is 20 miles away. The Sang Dong operation is made up of the underground mining, beneficiation mill, chemical refinery, tungsten metal plant, bismuth refinery, acid plant, foundry and machine shops. The bismuthinite production from the Sang Dong Mine is also of considerable importance, The output accounts for nearly 10 per cent of the world production of bismuth. A small amount of molybdenite concentrate is also recovered from the flotation operation.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION Electrostatic separation has found a number of applications since its initial installation as a processing method. Three broad types of electrostatic installations are discussed in order to provide a practical guide for three widely divergent uses of electrostatic separation. Only operating and installation data are covered in detail. A detailed technical treatment on the various types of electrostatic separation described in this paper can be found in the literature by F. S. Knoll, J. B. Taylor and J. E. Lawer.8, 9 ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION OF IRON ORE: WABDSH MINES, CANADA Introduction Electrostatic roll-type separator technology which had been in use in various forms since the 1920's evolved in the late 1940's when this separation process was developed and applied to the extraction of titanium bearing minerals from beach sands by J. H. Carpenter. Equipment design and industrial flowsheets developed for the recovery of rutile and ilmenite found new application in iron ore by chance in the year, 1956. From the time of the first beach sands plant, Carpco had developed other technology, gravity and magnetic separation to better serve the beach sands industry. It was in the fall of 1956 that an iron ore producer from the upper Michigan Peninsula sent a sample of jaspilite (fine-grained specular hematite in a jasper matrix) to Carpco's laboratory for the purpose of determining if a new high-intensity magnetic separator would be beneficial. Process Development W. P. Dyrenforth, while presenting a paper on the subject in the fall of 1957, recounts the laboratory tests. "High-intensity magnetic separators have been employed (for the beneficiation of iron ore) with some success and are still being investigated. Magnetic separation is a natural field of investigation, since iron and magnetism have been almost synonymous since ancient times. As a matter of fact, when Carpco first began investigating the possibilities of upgrading specular hematite, the first thought was in terms of magnetic separation; and the second thought was in terms of gravimetric separation. Metalliferous sediments and/or saline brines have now been discovered in numerous sea floor deeps along 900 km of the axial rift zone of the Red Sea (Fig. 1). The Atlantis II Deep remains the most interesting of the the brine deeps both in terms of intensity of submarine hydrothermal processes and in terms of potential economic importance. In fact, successful completion of a pre-pilot mining test in 1979 indicates that the Atlantis II Deep may become the first deep sea base metal sulfide mine (Mustafa and Amann, 1980). Under the most optimistic scenario, the Atlantis II Mine might be established 4-6 years after completion of a year long pilot mining test in 1983-84. If established, mining would produce about 100,000 tons per day of wet mud with about 200 tons per day contained zinc, and proportional amounts of Cu and Ag. Expected mine life would be about 15-20 years (Anon., 1981). In addition to direct economic importance, the Red Sea brines and metalliferous deposits provide significant insight into exploration for sea floor brine-related ore deposits and for analogous ancient deposits. In this paper I will concentrate on the economic potential of Red Sea deposits and sea floor exploration for brine related deposits, but some ramifications of relevance to ancient deposits are extant.

Early in the 60's the author served as Chairman of the Engineering Foundation's Coordinating Committee on Air Pollution Research. One of our objectives was the development of a study on the measurement of stack emissions. Three publications of the Foundation resulted from these efforts to focus attention on the stack sampling problem.1,2,3 Two of these were annotated bibliographies covering 197 references. The third reported the results of a workshop meeting at which some 21 individuals from research institutes, industry and government discussed the possible and probable areas of research that would add to or increase the ease, precision and utility of sampling gaseous and particulate matter emitted from stacks. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has had in its Power Test Codes a Standard Code for Determining the Dust Concentration in a Gas stream4 since 1941, The American Industrial Hygiene Association has published, in its Air Pollution Manual,5 a Section on Stack Sampling. Industry and regulatory agency requirements for stack sampling have utilized some modification of the alternatives in methodology. There has been ho single guide to stack sampling that met the needs of those who have the need to know.

The hemolytic activity of milligram-sized mineral dust samples from coal mines collected in personal dust samplers were measured by a modified Harington assay method which increases the sensitivity of the technique. Measurements were conducted on a large number of samples from different mines characterized for gravimetric quartz content and the relative bulk concentration of common contaminants (Al,Ca,Fe). The results of these measurements were compared to the hemolytic activity of pure quartz and of mineral samples obtained from roof-bolter dust boxes of two coal mines. No correlation could be established between hemolytic activity and the compositional variables tested. The results suggest that the distribution of minerals among individual particles and the surface characteristics of particles, rather than the bulk concentration, determine the hemolytic activity of respirable mine dusts.

As was the case with many other mining companies, the management of Tennessee Copper Company' viewed with some interest reports in various trade and technical journals of the successful use of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixtures as an explosive in coal stripping., construction, open pit mining and finally in underground salt mines. The apparently simple transition from the "interested" stage to a point where in excess of 80% of the ex¬plosives used is ammonium nitrate may be of interest. The Tennessee Copper Company operates five mines in the "Copper Basin" of Polk County which lies on the extreme southeast corner of Tennessee. The ore is a massive sulfide principally pyrrhotite and pyrite with some tough lime silicates as gangue while the walls are greywacke interbedded with schist. Average total production is 28,000 tons per 5-day week and an average of 422 feet of development per week. Development work consists of 8'x 8?, 6?x 7?, 5'x 7? and 4'x 6? drifts driven with drifter drills using 1-5/8" carbide detachable bits and 5'x 5' raises driven with stopers using 1-5/8" bits.

Discussion by A. Unal Barbaro et al. (1990) implemented a tedious study aimed at delineating the short-scale spatial variability of sulfur in a coal seam. It is not possible, however, to extend their conclusions to any other coal seam or use their in any other fashion, because the background geology was not presented. Nor were the conclusions accompanied by geological interpretations in the paper. In addition, an unfortunate printing error occurred where the total sulfur (determined by High Temperature Combustion) variogram in Fig.3 was duplicated in Fig. 2 instead of the seam height variogram. A more serious error, however, has been committed in the definition of the variable, seam height. What is defined as seam height by Barbaro et al. (1990) is, in essence, mining height, and is not a regionalized variable that should be studied by geostatistical methods directly. Despite the fact that the variable, seam height, is not defined in the paper explicitly, the following quotation discloses the fallacy: "All roof rock that exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft) from the floor was not taken because the longwall was operated to not mine more than 1.8 in (6 ft) unless the coal seam height exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft)." From this definition, the seam height, and therefore the sampling height, is equal to the actual coal thickness, if the coal thickness is greater than 1.8 m (6 ft). Otherwise, it is equal to the sum of the coal thickness plus the thickness of the roof rock that complements the thickness to 1.8 m (6 ft). In the latter case, the seam height is constant and equal to 1.8 m (6 ft). It is possible to conduct a variogram study on a pool of samples that are realizations of two different variables. But the conclusions derived would not belong to any one of the two variables uniquely and, therefore, do not possess any significance. Geostatistical analysis is irrelevant for the sum of multiple regionalized variables formed by arbitrary selections. In a two-seam setting, for example, the mining height, as defined by the thickness of one seam at one location and the thickness of both seams at another location (due to quality and/or minimum thickness considerations perhaps), should not be used in the calculation of one common variogram. The two seams should be modeled separately. They can then be combined according to the specific purposes of the study. On the other hand, if a constant is added to a regionalized variable (to incorporate dilution perhaps), the variogram of the new variable will not change. Barbaro et al. (1990), surprisingly, does not give any geological interpretation of their results despite the fact that most of them can be explained by the origins of sulfur in a coal seam. The presentation of the results of a geostatistical study with no reference to the geology of the deposit is uninformative. It may also be misleading for the potential users of geostatistics, It is not unusual to find nuggets of pyrite in coal seams. In such cases, pyritic sulfur will probably display a spatial structure for only a very small distance that will appear in the experimental variogram as no spatial correlation. This very well known phenomenon is called the pure nugget effect in geostatistics (Journel and Huijbregts, 1978) and perhaps can explain the lack of correlation found for pyritic sulfur content. The lack of correlation found for the total sulfur content may also be explained in the same way because the total sulfur content is dominated by the pyritic sulfur content in this case study. One should notice, however, that the situation may completely be reversed after cleaning the coal. Not all of the inorganic sulfur should be expected to be in the form of pyrite nuggets in a coal seam. It may also be disseminated in the coal seam and it is expected that it follows a certain spatial structure. However, an existing spatial structure may be masked by including a part of the roof rock, rich in sulfides, into the seam thickness in an arbitrary fashion because areas having a sandstone roof sometimes are known to show a higher sulfur content due to the downward percolation of solutions rich in iron sulfides (Clark, 1979). Plants use sulfur in their growth processes. Much of this sulfur is bound organically during peat accumulation and coal formation (Cecil et al., 1978.) This suggests a spatial structure of some sort for the organic sulfur. However, it is not possible to test this hypothesis because the results obtained by the authors for the organic sulfur content are not given in this paper. For this reason, the conclusion that simple average of the nearby samples would provide the best unbiased estimates is questionable for organic sulfur and is not based on any substantial supporting evidence. It is suspected that no spatial structure was detected and this was due to high sampling and laboratory analysis errors. Before concluding that sulfur variability in the seam at the location of study was random, a more detailed study for the disseminated non-pyritic sulfur should have been conducted, not for the sake of scientific curiosity only, but also due to its utmost importance with regard to coal cleaning and emission control. Pyritic sulfur can be cleaned to a considerable extent, whereas organic sulfur can not, making the emission control strategies highly dependent on the spatial distribution of the organic sulfur (Knudsen, 1981). In the light of these facts, one wonders why Barbaro et al. (1990) did not present the results of their study for the sulfate and organic sulfur content. The Cowles Mountain Tunnel was driven 2,073 m (6,800 ft) with a 3.43 m (11 ft 3 in) shuffle shoe TBM, for the San Diego County Water Authority, through extremely high strength granitic rock in the City of San Diego, Ca. The initial contract was $10.9 million. Tunneling began in March 1992 and all work was completed in May 1993. After the tunnel drive was completed in September 1992, a 2.44 m (96 in) Welded Steel Pipe was installed, welded and encased with cellular backfill to complete a small portion of the County's $970 million Capital Improvement Project. This paper will discuss the successful completion of a tunnel through some of the hardest most abrasive rock ever excavated with a TBM in North America.

The accumulation, handling, and utilization of sludges formed from wet process phosphoric acid is one of the major problems in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to explain some of the considerations and techniques that can be employed to provide some measure of control over the problem. An acid made from a Central Florida phosphate rock is used to illustrate the effects of one process design approach used to provide one type of control. Other approaches or techniques are discussed on a general basis. In every case, the discussion is purposely limited to conventional dihydrate processing in which phosphoric acid is produced from the filter at a strength of approximately 30% P205 and is subsequently concentrated to higher strengths such as 44 and 54% P205.

The early beginnings of mining geophysics in Sweden can be traced back to the reign of queen Kristina in the 17th century. The mine compass, consisting of a freely suspended magnetic needle in a casing, was in use certainly by 1640 and probably earlier for locating iron ore deposits. Whether the mine compass was a Swedish invention or not is an unsettled question since the possibility cannot be overlooked that the celebrated Nürnberg compass-makers of the 16th century may have constructed it for the first time(1). Be that as it may, the mine compass was very extensively employed in Sweden for more than two centuries and met with spectacular success in locating magnetic deposits under shallow overburden. Occasionally the diligent prospector would even be rewarded with a pyrrhotitebearing sulphide deposit, as witness many old sulphide-ore pits and some mines still in operation from the 17th and the 18th centuries. The mine compass measured only the orientation of the Earth's magnetic field and not its strength. Although it was improved in construction and sensitivity over the ages, no great strides were made in magnetic prospecting after the initial discovery of the use of the compass until Gauss, omnipresent in 19th century physics and mathematics, showed with the assistance of Weber how the strength of a magnetic field could be determined.

"More than 800 million tons of material will be excavated during large underground projects such as tunnels, undergrounds and power plants by 2030 in Europe only. The raw material excavated is often classified as waste, which involves environmental impact and transport issues: landfill areas, CO2 emissions and noise. But how can such massive amounts of material be transported, processed and deposited? Using the example of the AlpTransit Ceneri Base Tunnel (15.4 km), we show that suitable excavated materials can be used sustainably as a primary resource for tunnel concrete. This requires careful planning of the installations and storage areas by the client, timely building of the processing plants and other handling facilities outside the tunnel and a continuous evaluation of the raw material quality. 1. INTRODUCTION Spoil management is a central element of large construction projects. The systematic reuse of suitable excavated material not only saves natural resources, reduces transport distances and landfill volume, but can also decrease overall construction costs. Ideally, all of the concrete needed for tunnel lining can be produced with this on-site material. Such a natural resource management concept was applied for the construction of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel (L = 57 km). Spoil management concepts are, how-ever, difficult to implement and call for innovative techniques, sophisticated logistics and organization. In the context of large projects, environmentally friendly transport, processing and storage of millions of tons of excavated loose material represent another logistics challenge (Simmen & Lieb, 2010). This paper shows key factors that led to the successful completion of spoil management at the Ceneri Base Tunnel, which constitutes a part of the AlpTransit Gotthard Project (Figure 1)."

Froth flotation of coal is growing in importance and complexity. Some of the reasons for these changes follow. 1) A need exists for energy resource conservation. 2) Preparation plants are processing widely varying coal -- deep seam, strip and stockpiled either separately or as blends. 3) More fines are being generated because more mines are using automatic mining equipment. 4) It is more practical and economical to remove ash and sulfur at the preparation plant than during utilization.

Introduction With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive, but it leads to greater losses in slimes. Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25 to 50 µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Ore from the South Crofty mine near Redruth, Cornwall, was subjected to thermal pretreatment in the hope that differential thermal expansion of the minerals would lead to intergranular cracking, and thus enhanced liberation. South Crofty ore contains about 1% tin as cassiterite associated with a complex assemblage of quartz, chlorite, tourmaline, and hema¬tite in granite and slate. Recovery of cassiterite can be as low as 70%, as overgrinding occurs during stage reduction of the material to 1 mm (primary grinding) and 180 µm (regrinding). Cassiterite is present in grain sizes ranging from submicroscopic to + 10 mm, the bulk being predominantly in the range of 50 µm to 3 mm. Experimental Flat polished sections of the ore were photographed in reflected light using a Vickers M17 microscope. The sections were then heated in a Carbolite LMF4 muffle furnace. The heating rate and temperature were monitored by a thermocouple immersed in the bed of particles. Previous work by Sherring (1981) on the same material showed that a 55% reduction in grinding resistance occurred when the material was rapidly heated and cooled through the quartz inversion tem¬perature (573°C), where a volumetric expansion of 0.86% occurs. The samples were therefore heated to 650°C at 26°/min, and were then water-quenched to room temperature. The effect of heat treatment on the mineralogy and fracture network was assessed by examining the same area after treatment. Results Most of the sections examined showed that extensive transgranular cracking occurred as a result of heat treatment. Such cracking, although weakening the rock and hence reducing the work index, would in no way enhance the liberation of the cassiterite from the host minerals. Intergranular cracking, which would lead to enhanced liberation, was difficult to discern under reflected light, but there was evidence of such cracking in some of the sections examined. Figures 1 and 2 are examples of typical sections before and after heat treatment. Figures la and lb - show cassiterite in hematite, Fig. lb, in normal incident illumination, illustrating clearly that after heat treatment, transgranular fracture is evident in the cassiterite. If any intergranular cracking has occurred, it is not evident in this photograph. Figures 2a and 2b show cassiterite in quartz before and after treatment. Fracturing in both minerals after treatment can clearly be seen, and there is evidence of intergranular fracturing. However, protruding "arms" of cassiterite are severed by transgranular fracture. Subgrains of quartz have also been isolated by trans¬granular fracture. There is major transgranular cracking across the wider sections of cassiterite. Discussion The effect of rapidly heating South Crofty tin ore to 650°C, followed by water-quenching to room temperature, has been studied by observing the fracture networks in mineral grains. The choice of 650°C as the heating temperature was influenced by the work of Sherring (1981), who found considerable reduction in grinding resistance after thermal pretreatment of the same ore. Scheding et al. (1981), however, have shown, by means of a crude calculation, that heat treatment cannot be justified solely on the basis of reduced grinding costs. The cost of heat treatment far out-weighs that of grinding, resulting in the combined costs for heat treatment being over six times that for grinding unheated material. The most economically attractive aspect of heat treatment is the possibility of enhanced liberation of the valuable mineral due to increased intergranular rather than transgranular fracture. Grinding costs would be greatly reduced by improved liberation at coarser sizes, and the costs of ancillary processes, such as dewatering and tailings disposal, would be reduced. The most significant economic effect, however, would be in improved metallurgical efficiency. Improved liberation would increase concentrate grades, and recoveries would be higher, particularly in the case of ores where high slime losses are produced due to the excessively fine grinding required to produce adequate liberation. Manser (1983) has shown that only a 1% increase in tin recovery, at the same concentrate grade, would be sufficient to offset heat treatment costs on South Crofty ore. Heavy liquid analysis and shaking table separation have been used to evaluate the effect of thermal treatment on processing (Binns, 1984; Scheding, 1981; Sherring, 1981). However, treatment of unheated and heated samples of South Crofty ore, ground to the same product size, by such methods have shown little evidence of improved metallurgical efficiency after thermal pretreatment. The large amount of transgranular fracturing revealed by reflected light studies helps to explain this lack of improvement. California's Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) was passed in 1975 to identify and protect mineral resources in areas of high land-use conflict and ensure reclamation of mined lands. Under SMARA, aggregate resource availability is quantified and compared to forecasted demand in specific market regions. Fifteen regions studied thus far cover 20,000 square miles and contain 50 billion tons of high-quality aggregate resources which have been legally designated as ?regionally significant?, providing a measure of protection previously unavailable. SMARA reports and State testimony at local hearings have supplied objective information and helped reduce conflict in mine-permitting decisions.

Separation of dolomite from Florida phosphates was achieved by first conditioning the feed with fatty acid at pH 10 followed by reconditioning at pH 4 or below, before flotation. Observed selectivity of this two-stage conditioning process was attributed to the amount as well as changes in the nature of adsorbed collector species upon reconditioning. In this paper, bench-scale flotation results of optimizing the major process parameters, such as reconditioning pH and collector dosage, for upgrading natural high dolomitic phosphate samples from Florida are discussed.

An in-seam seismic (ISS) - based void detection technique was developed and tested for three general mine conditions: anthracite, bituminous and trona. The detection range tested varied from 80 to 100 m for trona mines and from 33 to 66 m for bituminous mines. High quality and broad band signals were obtained from these tests and were used to delineate the voids. The paper provides a brief discussion on the technical features of this void detection technique, the testing conditions and results, and a general assessment of the technique.

This paper will describe the benefits of utilizing the decision support system, DSS to support the methodology of structured decision-making in the mining environment. It will outline the layers of the mining related decision making – 1. Creation of “one truth” situational awareness utilizing 2. existing planning, ERP, operational and monitoring agents, a. Expressing plan verse performance across mining phases and functions compared with the actual and trends to evaluate performance. b. Creating alternate courses of action and the implications up and downstream. 3. It will review the current condition were although a multitude of technologies resolve multi variable issues they do not interact in a way that assists decision makers throughout the organization in making high-quality decisions that will push the overall performance envelope. 4. The paper will show the benefits of integrating military methodologies to resolve multi variable complexed issues (operational, financial and other), operating in changing environments in order to meet time sensitive objectives with restricted resources. This is achieved by creating a shared situational awareness thru incorporating information from a multitude of data generating agents, creating COA, selecting the appropriate and turning it into a plan. The paper will discuss the implementation and suggest a path.

Since the petroleum crisis in 1973, charcoal1 is being considered one of the most important fuel for the Brazilian consumers, mainly for pellet's producers. In replacing fuel by charcoal mixed up with ore, obviously one of the first thing to be investigated is its influence in the product's quality. Special attention has been given to the metallurgical characteristics. This paper infocus the effect of increasing dosings of charcoal to the pellet's porosity and how other physical and metallurgical characteristics will be affected accordingly. This work was carried out using two different finesses of charcoal and dosing varied from 0.5 to 2.0%.
