In the United States, about one-quarter of the fuel oil and natural gas consumption is associated with power production in utility and industrial boilers and process heat needs in industrial furnaces. Coal has been an attractive candidate for replacement of these premium fuels because of its low cost, but there are penalties associated with the solid fuel form. In many cases pulverized coal is unacceptable as a premium fuel replacement because of the extensive cost of retrofitting an existing boiler designed to burn oil or gas. In the cases of synthetic fuels from coal, research and development still has a long way to go and the costs of research and development are very high. Another option which appears very attractive is the use of solid coal in a liquid fuel form, coal slurry fuels. Occidental Research Corporation (ORC) has been developing coal slurry fuels in conjunction with Island Creek Coal (ICC,) Occidental Petroleum's wholly-owned subsidiary. Both Coal-Oil Mixtures and Coal -Water Mixtures are under development. ICC is a large eastern coal producer, engaged in the production and marketing of bituminous coal, both utility steam and high quality/low volatile metallurgical coals. A sister division, Sheridan Enterprises is engaged in the development of western coals.

For the past 30 years, process flowsheet design has been accomplished largely through modeling and simulation. This approach provides circuit designers the freedom to test various separation approaches while minimizing physical and human resource requirements. The Limn® software provides a unique approach to process simulation, through a Microsoft Excel interface. While the software comes with standard process models for numerous unit operations, the Excel calculation environment and the accompanying VBA platform provide a convenient interface for custom model integration, even for non-experienced programmers. This feature is especially useful for university students in introductory process modeling and simulation-assisted flowsheet design courses as well as experienced practitioners with proprietary process models. This paper shows how the Limn® software may be used to solve basic process engineering problems as well as more comprehensive circuit design challenges. Industrial examples as well as opportunities for training and education are presented.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the removal of two toxic/heavy metals (cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb)) from brass foundry wastewater. Polymers, copolymers, guars, and gums were used in conjunction with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and magnesium oxide (MgO) to remove the metals from solution. Several polymers were successful in removing Cd and Pb from the wastewater. The concentrations of Cd and Pb were lowered from 19 to 0.01 ppm and from 20 to less than 0.01 ppm, respectively. The methods investigated could easily be adapted to many existing wastewater treatment facilities and/or be used independently.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a serious environmental problem in mining activities. Prediction is the first step for evaluate the potential of acid generation and there are some possible methods to estimate it. They are described as static tests, which examine the balance between acid producing and acid consuming materials, and kinetic tests, which attempt to predict drainage quality over time. Static methods are very simple and give a qualitative classification of the ores based on their potential to generate acid drainage. The characterization of ores to determine their acid producing potential is vital for the prevention of long term environmental liabilities. Laboratory tests were conducted under different methodologies to predict the acid producing potential of sulphide overburden, ore materials and tailings from a deposit of copper ore.

The behavior of non-sulphide gangue in chaloopyrite flotation circuits has been investigated. Plant and laboratory tests were carried out on five different ores, and linear relationships were found to exist between the rates of recovery of water and free nonsulphide gangue in the concentrates although there was evidence from pilot plant tests that these were linear approximations to parabolic curves over the limited regions which were observed. There was evidence that the free non-sulphide gangue enters the concentrate by hydraulic classification and a classification function has been proposed to define this behavior. This function is suitable for inclusion in a mathematical model of the process.

In 1970 Texasgulf (Australia) introduced natural gamma radiation logging of drill holes for exploration in the Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia. Drill hole logs have allowed positive stratigraphic and structural correlations within complexly folded secondary hematite ore deposits and between individual iron ore deposits separated by distances in excess of seventy-five miles. A Neltronics model KPD logging system and gamma-ray sonde are being used to measure the natural gamma radiation of the enriched Brockman and Marra Mamba banded iron formations. The parent banded iron formations are composed of thick, chemically precipitated iron oxide, chert, iron silicate, and carbonate with thin intro-formational clastic horizons. These clastic horizons give a greater natural gamma radiation than the banded iron horizon, and each clastic horizon has a characteristic radiation profile related to its composition and thickness. Because the natural gamma-radiation profile is unchanged during secondary enrichment of the iron formation, the present stratigraphic position of each drill hole can be established and complex folding can be accurately traced in the sub-surface. Gamma ray logging of percussion drill holes has made feasible a significant reduction in diamond core drilling without loss of accuracy. At the same time, it has provided a means of rapid evaluation of complexly folded iron ore deposits.

Rapidly increasing energy costs and more rigid customer quality requirements necessitate improved control of pelletizing processes. With the introduction of dedicated microprocessor-based controllers, sophisticated control strategies are now possible. A recent application of this technology at Carol Project has resulted in fuel savings, improved pellet quality, and standardization of operating procedures. This was accomplished with no production loss by the use of a "building block" approach to design and equipment selection. Details of this approach and the results obtained are described.

During the last decade, there haven't been any great innovations in the design features of a copper concentrator. What has worked well in the past continues to work well, so that major breakthroughs have been minimal. Conservatism in the ranks also plays an important part. As a copper concentrator is not designed and built everyday, Davy was elated to have an important part in this project. This is the story of the design of the oracle Ridge Project located north of Tucson on the back of Mt. Lemmon at an elevation of 5,900 feet on the N.E. slope of the Catalinas. The Oracle Ridge property, formerly known as the Control Mine, is owned by Oracle Ridge Mining Partners, a joint venture between Continental Materials Corp. of Chicago and Union Miniere of Brussels, Belgium; both or¬ganizations specializing in the non-ferrous metal industry.

Discussion by M.R. Yalamanchili and J.D. Miller The authors, M. S. Celik et al., should be recognized for their efforts to describe the flotation behavior of boron minerals. In the case of borax and other soluble salt minerals, analysis of the flotation chemistry has been difficult because of the high ionic strengths associated with these soluble salt systems. However, considerable progress has been made in this area, and recently a surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model was proposed by Miller and his coworkers to explain the collector adsorption phenomena observed in soluble salt flotation systems (Milleret al, 1992; Yalamanchili et al., 1993; Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994; Yalamanchili and Miller, 1994a: Yalamanchili and Miller, 1994b). In this work, the sign of the surface charge of alkali halides in their saturated brines was established on the basis of nonequilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis (Miller et al., 1992). Generally, these results are what would be expected from the simplified lattice-ionhydration theory. This electrokinetic information coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in such soluble salt flotation systems indicates that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. Experimental flotation/bubble attachment results for 21 different alkali halides (Yalamanchili et al., 1993; Yalamanchili and Miller, I994b) confirmed that the flotation response of soluble salt minerals with weak electrolyte collectors can best be explained by the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids rather than by the adsorption collector ions and/or neutral molecular dipoles as originally suggested by many researchers (Fuerstenau and Fuerstenau, 1957; Schubert, 1967; Roman et al., 1968). In addition, the flotation of certain alkali oxyanions (Pizarro et al., 1993) and double salts such as schoenite and kainite can be explained by the same collector colloid adsorption mechanism (Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994). The borax flotation results reported by Celik et al. need to be examined in terms of the above mentioned surface charge/ collector colloid adsorption model. Unfortunately, the authors seem to be unaware of this recent work that nicely describes soluble salt flotation with weak electrolyte type collectors such as amines and carboxylates. In view of our past work, the flotation characteristics of borax were of particular interest, and, in this regard, the results of dodecyl amine flotation of borax reported by Celik et al. have been examined in further detail in the light of experimental results from our laboratory. In our research, a vacuum flotation technique was used to study the flotation response of borax (Na2B407.10H20), which has a solubility of 39 g/L at 25 °C) with dodecyl amine hydrochloride as collector. These chemicals were purchased from Eastman Kodak and used as received. Saturated solutions of borax at desired pH values were prepared by continuously stirring the salt solutions over a period of about 10 hrs. It should be mentioned that the conditioning time to achieve equilibrium is an important variable and can significantly change the flotation response of some soluble salts (Yalamanchili et al., 1993). Collector was added to the saturated borax solutions containing about one gram of 100x 150 mesh borax particles, and conditioning was done for about 20 minutes prior to flotation. The borax flotation recoveries from saturated brine are presented in Fig. 1 as a function of collector addition at the natural pH of 9.3, as reported both by Celik et al. and as measured in our laboratory. In addition, the region of precipitation for the dodecyl amine hydroborate is included in Fig. 1. It can be seen in Fig. 1 that the flotation response curves are separated by about one order of magnitude in R12NH3CI collector addition. The flotation results of Celik et al. show that the maximum borax recoveries can be obtained below the solubility limit of the dodecyl amine hydroborate collector. However, in our experiments borax flotation seems to occur only after the precipitation of the dodecyl amine hydroborate collector as might be expected from the collector colloid adsorption model (Yalamanchili et al., 1993) if borax were negatively charged. Further analysis by nonequilibrium and equilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements for borax indicates that borax is negatively charged at the natural pH of 9.3, as discussed below. The reliability of the nonequilibrium electrophoretic measurements has been demonstrated previously for alkali halides and alkali oxyanions (Miller et al., 1992; Miller and Yalamanchili, 1994). The equilibrium and nonequlibrium electrophoretic measurements for borax were found to be consistent and are presented in Table 1. These results provide clear evidence that borax carries a negative surface charge in its saturated brine (pH 9.3), and the sign of the surface charge of borax reverses and becomes positive if the pH is reduced to 8.6. As part of an effort to provide basic data on the fundamental scientific and engineering principles of minerals beneficiation, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the flocculation of mineral fines. This paper presents results of studies using crosslinked starches containing carboxyl, diethanolamine, iminodiacetic acid, and xanthate groups to flocculate hematite, goethite, chromite, manganrte, pyrolusite, cuprite, and cassiterite fines. The carboxyl and xanthate derivatives flocculated all minerals except cassiterite; the latter was flocculated by only the diethanolamine derivative. The iminodiacetic acid derivative flocculated hematite, goethite, chromite, cuprite, and pryolusite fines. Zeta potential measurements were made to help define the reaction mechanism responsible for flocculation. These measurements indicate that electrostatic attraction probably is not involved, except possibly in the case of the diethano lamine derivative. The separation of hematite from quartz by selective flocculation with chelating cross- linked starches under two pH conditions and with two dispersing agents is described. Best recoveries and grades were found when either the carboxyl or xanthate derivatives was added at the natural pH of the pulp in the absence of a dupersing agent.

The Smoky Canyon Mine has recently installed a PROMPTED GAMMA NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS (PGNAA) on-line analyzer as part of a long-term advanced process control program. The on-line analyzer was adapted from a continuous dry analyzer and a large on-stream wet analyzer to a compact, multiplexed 3" slurry analyzer. The analyzation feed system utilizes a multiplexer system to accommodate up to fourteen (14) different plant process streams. The corresponding sampling system also provides for dewatering of sample streams too dilute for timely analysis. Key analysis includes, but is not limited to, phosphorus, aluminum, magnesium, calcium, and potassium. This data currently allows plant operations to be manually evaluated and controlled. Future development of a plant-wide supervisory control system will utilize the data for plant operations. This paper discusses the design, installation, and operation of the PGNAA on-line analyzer at the Smoky Canyon Mine.

Current coal cleaning technology uses heavy media (HM) for the recovery of coal in particles larger than 1/16 of an inch. Through the use of float sink measurements of the feed and products to commercial HM unit operations, a selection function, sometimes called Tromp curve in the coal industry, can be computed. Since the selection function is a plot f the probability of a particle appearing in the float versus the particle density, the slope of the curve will be sharper at the point where the particle has a 50% chance f appearing in the float. Thus, the separation will be better. Fine-tuning a unit operation or a circuit of unit operations requires that the selection function be accurately known. By current practice, it is difficult to obtain an accurate measure of the slope because, when the selection function is plotted versus density, the data forms an S-shaped curve which lacks data points near the 505 point of the curve. This lack of sensitivity in measuring the slope means that small recovery improvements cannot be detected; thus, only large improvements are measurable. Since most engineering improvements are small when individually considered, but large when aggregated ever many small improvements, this lack of measurement sensitivity rules out the slew march toward improved efficiency. This paper presents a method of analyzing heavy media selection functions resulting in a far more effective measure of the selective function slope. Furthermore, this improved method is applied to a number of industrial coal cleaning plants for both heavy media and heavy media cyclones. Using the work of Hudy (1968), and Deurbrouck and Hudy (1972), selection functions for individual unit operations in each plant are calculated as a function f particle size as well as density.

HINDERED SETTLING CONCENTRATION In the free settling of mineral particles in a liquid, the falling particles are at a distance from each other so that no particle is affected by its neighbor. In hindered settling, the concentration of particles is sufficiently high so that each particle is affected by its proximity to other particles in the suspension. Richards and Locke86 have described the hindered settling phenomenon as the condition “.. where particles of mixed sizes, shapes and densities in a crowded mass, yet free to move along themselves, are sorted in a rising current of water, the velocity of which is much less than the free-falling velocity of the particles but yet fast enough so the particles are in motion." This is the condition normally encountered in mineral con¬centration processes. The well known Newton equation for free settling of coarse (ap proximately +10-mesh, 1/16-in. or -- 2000-µm) spherical particles is:87 where v," is free settling velocity, cm/sec; p' is density of the fluid; p is density of the particle, g/cm3; d is particle diameter, cm; g is acceleration due to gravity, cm/sec2; and Q is coefficient of resistance, dimensionless, ~0.4. For the settling of fine spheres in water (approximately 150 mesh or 100 µm) the equation of Stokes pertains:87 where µ is viscosity of the fluid in poises and the other symbols have the same meaning as those in Eq. 1. For particles whose size lies between about 10 mesh (--2000 µm) and 150 mesh (100 µm), their settling velocity can be determined from experimental data. These data are available in convenient form in the text by Taggart88 based on the original work of Richards. Alternatively, a Reynolds number-coefficient of resistance plot may be used to determine the settling rate of such particles.87 The settling rate of spherical particles under hindered settling conditions can also be calculated from Eqs. I and 2 by replacing p', the density of the fluid, by p" the apparent density of the suspen¬sion. The concentration of particles in the fluid thus imparts an appar¬ent density to the composite fluid or suspension greater than that of the liquid alone, resulting in a buoyant effect on the larger particles. Particle shape affects the settling rate of both coarse and fine particles. The general effect is to reduce their settling velocities and the effect is greater for coarse particles and for those settling under hindered settling conditions than for fine particles or free settling ones. For two particles of differing densities but settling at the same velocity under Newtonian conditions, the ratio of their diameters from Eq. 1, called the free settling ratio is: where L signifies the lighter particle and H, the heavier particle. Under Stokesian conditions the exponent would be 0.5. For hindered settling conditions the fluid density p' is replaced by the apparent density of the suspension, p", to obtain a generalized equation for the hindered settling ratio: assuming both particles settle in approximately the same regime. The free settling ratio as given by Eq. 3 has been called by Taggart88 the "concentration criterion" and is used to predict the effectiveness of any gravity concentration process (see Introduction to this section). Based on Eqs. 3 and 4, if two particles of densities pH and p,, settle at the same velocity, the diameter of the lighter particle will be larger than that of the heavier particle. For example, in the case of galena (pH = 7.5) and quartz (pL = 2.65) settling in water (p =1.0) under free settling, Newtonian conditions 3.9. Thus, a quartz particle nearly four times as large as a galena particle will settle at the same velocity. Any quartz particle just slightly less than four times the diameter of the largest galena particle may be separated from it. Under hindered settling, Newtonian condi¬tions in a suspension where p" = 1.65, dL/dH = 5.85 or any quartz particle just slightly less than about six times the largest galena particle may be separated from it. Reference to Eq. 4 indicates that a superior separation between two minerals of differing densities is favored by: (1) coarse particles settling under Newtonian conditions, (2) a large difference in (pa - PL), and (3) separation under hindered settling conditions where p" is high. Of course, there are practical limits to increasing p" excessively because at very high percent solids suspen¬sion fluidity would be lost and the hindered settling separation process defeated. Examples of hindered settling separators are the Dorrco-Fahren¬wald sizer,89 the Rheolaveur box 90 the Spitzkasten,89 and the Willoughby washer.91 These devices make a mineral separation on the basis of both specific gravity and size and all of them are essentially obsolete except for the Dorrco-Fahrenwald sizer and similar devices which still find application for the removal of coarse particles from a much finer particle assemblage and for preconcentration ahead of shaking tables. However, nearly all gravity concentration processes (jigs, tables, flowing film concentrators, heavy media separators) and many sizing devices (sizing classifiers, clarifiers, thickeners, hydrosepa¬rators) make use of the hindered settling phenomenon during the separation of particles. "As part of the new 2nd Ave Subway Project, an existing tunnel constructed in the 1970’s will be connected to the new subway and used as new running tunnels. The existing tunnel had to be modified to comply with newer structural and fire life safety codes and to be connected to the new cut and cover station at 96th St. This paper will discuss the complexities of tying an existing tunnel constructed over 40 years ago into the new station and allowing for movements due to the unloading of the existing tunnel and the differential settlement of the two structures during both the construction and permanent condition. Topics that will be discussed include structural analysis, ground improvement techniques, selection of support of excavation walls, working in contaminated soil and instrumentation and monitoring of the structures. It will also cover retrofitting the tunnel to comply with updated Fire/Life/Safety requirements. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Second Avenue Subway (SAS) will be the first major expansion of New York’s subway system in over 50 years. To be constructed in four phases, it will run from 125th St. in Harlem to Hanover Square in the Financial District (see Figure 1). For most of its length, the alignment is directly under the Second Avenue roadway."

General widespread interest in fine coal cleaning circuits did not occur in the United States until the mid 1960's. Up until this period the relatively low price for which bituminous coal was sold did not justify for many operators the capital and maintenance costs associated with the beneficiation and drying of fine coal. However, with current growing interest in this area, the introduction of new types of process equipment along with modifications to existing components is occuring to maximize the recovery of coal fines. In 1973 Derrick Manufacturing Corporation introduced high frequency screening machinery into the coal industry. The first design consisted of a 4 ft. wide 18 ft. long single deck screen frame with three 100 mesh woven wire screen surfaces divided by repulping troughs for the addition of wash water. In addition, a special slotted rubber dewatering deck was installed on the discharge end of the unit to assure adequate dewatering of the screen oversize. This panel had nominal 25 mesh X 3.0" slotted openings. The machine was also equipped with a special high speed-low amplitude (3600 RPM .032" % AMP.) integral vibrator.

Rock suitable for crushed-stone aggregate is almost entirely restricted to the Highlands region of Arkansas, mostly from Paleozoic sedimentary units, but also from a few Cretaceous igneous plutons. Reserves in the state are sufficient for local needs, and Arkansas is geographically well situated for export markets to the south, where resources for crushed-stone aggregate are lacking. A study of 423 quarries, test pits, and exploration sites in Arkansas has been completed to evaluate the relative quality of bedrock units for producing crushed aggregate. Of these, 274 sites have records of engineering tests for stone evaluation done by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and/or the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD). Of the 1,775 sample records from these sites, the most commonly reported parameters are the LA abrasion test and the Na-sulfate soundness test. Many records also have absorption and specific-gravity data, and, for some, petrographic information helps identify the potential for alkali-silica reactivity in portland-cement concrete. By determining the bedrock sources of the tested samples, comparison is made between the various geologic mapping units as to their relative quality for crushed stone.

A national survey, 1978-1980, found 180,973 waste impoundments used by industrial mining, municipal and other interests. Possibly 27,000 contain hazardous materials. The potential hazard of leaks polluting water supplies is a growing concern. An electrical technique was developed to efficiently and speedily detect and locate leaks in geomembrane-lined liquid impoundments without emptying the contents. A potential applied between the liquid and earth causes electric current to flow through leaks in the insulating geomembrane material to ground. The cur- rent density around the leak is used to detect and locate the leak. Field tests show single and multiple leaks 2.54 cm in diameter or less can be detected and located to within less than 30 cm.

The optimisation of geopolymer synthesis was studied bymixing low Ca electric arc ferronickel slag with kaolinite, sodium silicate solution, sodium hydroxide pellets and water. The pulp was heated at low temperatures and left for curing at room temperature. Through statistical analysis it was shown that the factors with the most statistically significant effects on the compressive strength of the produced geopolymers are slag particle size and aging period. XRD and FTIR studies provide useful information regarding the progress of geopolymerisation mechanisms. Finally, studies regarding the durability and structural integrity of the produced geopolymers were also carried out.

Although more than 100 thorium-rare earth minerals are known, only a few have any commercial significance. Monazite, thorite, bastnasite, and some exotic thorium rare earth ores are reviewed Commercial interest is presently centered on monazite from the Union of South Africa, and thorite from this country. Thorium became commercially important with the development of the incandescent gas mantle about 75 years ago, Gas mantles consist of thorium oxide with small amounts of cerium oxide. The thorium nitrate used to make gas mantles was first obtained from rare thorium minerals, As a matter of fact, this use of thorium is still important and is one of the largest commercial uses for thorium materials. The discovery of monazite sand placer deposits along the coasts of Travancore, India, and in some Brazilian beach s .s, and the development of the old North and South Carolina monazite stream placers gave the mantle industry of 30 to 40 years ago a comfortable inventory of thorium ore. Even today, the thorium industry depends largely upon monazite ores for its source of thorium. This paper will briefly describe some of the major thorium ores and their principal deposits insofar as they relate to the thorium industry in this country. Because of similar chemical and physical properties, thorium always occurs with the rare earth elements and with varying amounts of yttrium. Thorium may predominate over rare earths, as in thorite-type minerals, or may represent only a fraction of the rare earth content. Typical ratios of thorium to rare earths in various minerals are given in Table 1, The average thorium content of the earth's crust is about 12 grams per ton, and in this respect thorium approximates lead, molybdenum, and some of the rare earths in abundance. The ore minerals of greatest importance to the-thorium-rare earth industry are monazite, thorite-type minerals, bastnasite-type- ores, and the family of minerals which is characterized by a preponderance of the heavy rare earths and yttrium. The latter classification includes xenotime, gadolinite, samarskite, euxenite, etc, The first two, monazite and thorite, are of greatest significance.

All mine operators using explosives want to maximize explosive performance while minimizing blasting costs. Use of bulk explosive products such as AN/FO, heavy AN/FO, slurries and emulsions has greatly improved blasting efficiency over the years. Many operators have improved energy output from these products by adding aluminum. A major problem facing them is the fluctuation in aluminum price. The question therefore becomes, when is it economically advantageous to use aluminum in bulk products? This paper answers this question by first reviewing the energy output from the main types of aluminized and non aluminized bulk mixed explosives and then by showing the relationship between the different products on a cost and energy basis. The paper finally presents examples of charts and tables which will aid mine operators to conveniently select the most economically correct bulk explosive, including the level of aluminum addition.
