Old mine workings are found throughout the Western United Sates on lands administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and private lands. Some of these mine workings date back to the late 1800s. There may be as many as 100,000 sites on lands administered by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. The Bureau of Land Management has worked with the State of Montana and other agencies to identify and prioritize these sites on BLM administered lands. Following completion of the AML inventory work, the Bureau began an aggressive program to clean up priority sites. This presentation will highlight completed work as well as work in progress on several sites.

The Los Angeles, California JWPCP effluent outfall tunnel will transport secondary-treated effluent from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson to the White Point Manifold. Upon completion, through ground conditions ranging from soils to hard rock, the tunnel will be approx. 7 miles (11 km) long with a finished internal diameter of 18-ft (5.5 m). This paper will present the Tunneling Condition Assessment Report (TCAR) and Tunnel Operation Plan (TOP) developed prior to construction, as well as the actual TBM performances achieved along the northern portion of the alignment in soft ground, shallow cover, and beneath a densely urbanized area.

Meldon Quarry is a seemingly rare occurrence of acid rock drainage (ARD) in a quarrying operation.4 With surface waters discharging to a tributary of a salmon-bearing river, it is subject to stringent discharge conditions. The quarry predates effective environmental management, and preventative, control and treatment measures were not implemented until relatively recently. However, retrospectively implementing standard preventative approaches at the site is costly, technically difficult and of uncertain benefit. This paper overviews the recent site history and introduces data from a demonstration by KEECO (UK) Limited of its Silica Micro Encapsulation (SME) water treatment technology.

Coal mine drainage, which occurs predominantly as acid mine drainage in the East, is a serious contaminant of surface and groundwater systems (Appalachian Regional Commission, 1969). Treatment of this pollutant can be very costly and is often difficult to achieve (Appalachian Regional Commission, 1969). A major source of coal mine drainage in surface waters is polluted ground- water discharge, therefore treatment of surface water does little to combat groundwater contamination. Prevention of the formation of coal mine drainage and restricting its entrance into the groundwater protects both surface and groundwater systems. The formation of acid mine drainage may be inhibited by preventing contact between toxic spoil, air, and water (Grim and Hill, 1974). This may be accomplished by surrounding toxic spoil with a relatively impermeable barrier, thus restricting groundwater and oxygen flow through the toxic zone. Toxic spoil packages constructed in this manner would minimize the entrance of acid mine drainage into the groundwater system, allowing dilution by uncontaminated water to occur. If successful, concentrations of coal mine drainage would be reduced below toxic levels.

Introduction Mechanical classifiers consist of a settling tank with parallel sides and a sloping bottom equipped with a mechanism which continuously agitates the pulp and removes the settled solids. The functions served by mechanical classifiers include the following: (1) allow the particles larger than the desired size to settle in the tank and provide an overflow product with a minimum of oversize particles, (2) produce an overflow product of sufficiently high solids content to meet the requirements of the subsequent processing steps, (3) agitate the pulp and permit separation of the entrapped undersize particles so they can report in the overflow product, and (4) drain and remove the underflow solids from the settling pool. Various types of mechanisms have been used to agitate the pulp and remove the settled solids, which include: (I) endless belt and chain drags, (2) reciprocating rakes, (3) helical flights mounted on a rotating shaft which extends through the settling pool, (4) helical flights inside of a rotating drum which contains the classifier pool, (5) troughed conveyor belts forming the settling pool in the concave curve of the belt closely following the tail pulley, and (6) low-speed impellers agitating the underflow settled in the apex of cone-type mechanical classifiers.23 The principal use of mechanical classifiers has been in closed¬-circuit wet grinding; however, this application has been widely displaced over the past few decades by the hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone installation, including its feed pump, offers lower capital costs and requires less floor space. Nominally it produces an overflow prod¬uct of higher solids content, compared with a mechanical classifier, for comparable classification size up to 400µm (35 mesh). However, these advantages of the hydrocyclone are being gained at the sacrifice of some of the advantages of the mechanical classifier. The mechanical classifier requires less power and has lower maintenance costs than the hydrocyclone and its feed pump. The underflow product from the mechanical classifier can have a higher solids content and contain less entrapped undersize particles than the comparable product from the hydrocyclone. Consequently, it is capable of operating at a higher classification efficiency. A reduced circulating load24, 25 results under these conditions in a closed-circuit grinding application. Other applications for mechanical classifiers include desliming, dewatering, and washing operations. Sand-slime separation may be achieved using one or more stages of mechanical classifiers. Typical applications would include washing and deslimining of concrete aggre¬gate or sand; glass sand; abrasives; oyster shells; phosphate rock; iron, nickel, and chromium ores; alumina; zeolites; solar salt; and precipitates from chemical processing. As an example for the latter, Bitzer26 recommended the use of mechanical classifiers for countercur¬rent cementation-in-pulp of copper from the leach liquor. Similarly, mechanical classifiers are used in uranium processing27 for separation of the barren sands from the pregnant leach solution. Depending on the particle size and the effectiveness of the sand¬slime separation, the sand product from mechanical classifiers may be drained to solids content approaching 84%. Thus, mechanical classifiers are frequently used as dewatering equipment for various applications, such as: 1) Make a product having suitable solids content for subsequent transport by belt conveyor. 2) Provide a drained product to reduce cost of drying. 3) Provide a drained, washed, heavy sand product for return to the circuit. 4) Recover fine values from dilute plant effluents from coal, sand, phosphate-rock, and iron-ore washing plants and from steel-mill flue¬dust scrubbers. 5) Drain residual reagents of a preceding process stage prior to conditioning with reagents of different characteristics, e.g., cationic¬anionic flotation of phosphate rock, iron ore, etc. Design and Operating Features The proper selection of mechanical classification equipment re¬quires that the properties of the solids and liquid are adequately de¬fined. The following descriptive information regarding the solids is desired: feed rate, chemical and physical composition, density, tem¬perature, size analysis, and desired separation size. For the liquid used, the following data would be needed: feed rate, density, viscosity, pH, and temperature. Settling Area. The pool area required to permit a particle larger than the separation size to settle depends on the density and shape of the particle and on the density and viscosity of the pulp within the classifier pool. These criteria of the solids and pulp determine the settling rate which, in turn, determines the settling area required. Determination of the settling rate by long-tube batch tests can be used to calculate the settling area. A theoretical approach for estimat¬ing the settling area requirements is discussed in Chapter 1, Classifica¬tion Theory. This procedure can be used when neither test data nor empirical data from similar operations are available. Data on settling-area requirements and settling rates have been compiled by the manufacturers of mechanical classifiers. The approxi¬mate settling area required for a particular separation size can be estimated by using the curve shown in Fig. 65. This curve applies for closed-circuit grinding applications. For dilute velocity classification in open circuit, desliming, the length of the overflow weir, W, multiplied by the weir's mean distance from the feed opening, E, is used as the design criterion, instead of the settling area, in sizing the classifier. The area requirements, W X E, for dilute velocity classification can be expressed in terms of volumetric flow, Q, and settling rate, Rs, as follows: W x E = Q/(18.06 Rs) where W and E are feet, Q is gallons per minute, and Rs is inches per second. Overflow Weir. The hydraulic head, and thus the velocity at which the overflow crests the overflow weir, is one of the factors controlling the particle size of classification. Consequently, the length of the overflow weir must be designed to provide the overflow velocity which allows the particles larger than the desired size of classification to settle in the working area of the pool. The paper deals with highly efficient dust collecting systems of the 10-600 type which constitute new generation installations de- signed to eliminate dust hazard in headings driven with roadheaders. A vortex ventube controlling the air flow in the com- bined ventilation system by means of air vortex generated by the ventube drive unit is also presented. From the results of measurements of under-roof concentrations of methane it appears that the application of the vortex ventube makes it possible to decrease the under-roof accumulation of methane more than 10 times.

It is generally accepted that sulfur exists in coal in three forms: (1) pyritic, (2) organic, and (3) sulfate sulfur. Sulfate sulfur usually makes up less than 1% of the total sulfur content. Pyritic and organic sulfur, make up almost all of the total sulfur and occur in varying amounts in different coals and can vary greatly in coal of the same seam Pyritic sulfurs of 20% to 80% of the total sulfur have been reported Other authors have shown that it is not possible to remove the organic sulfur without chemically altering the coal. Chapman and Jones (1) state: "Organic sulfur, unlike pyritic sulfur does not exist as discrete particles, but is intimately associated with the coal structure, and as such it is not possible to remove it or reduce its concentration by physical means." Any success in removing sulfur has come about by removing pyritic sulfur by physical means; therefore, removal of sulfur in the pyritic form is the subject of this investigation. The extent to which any impurities can be removed from a particular coal can be determined by a washability study. Outside of crushing coal, to finer sizes or chemically altering the coal, there are no known methods of changing this inherent washability characteristic. The efficiency of various methods used to remove impurities can be determined by comparison of results produced at a yield to the results as shown by a washability study. In recent years heavy media processes have proven their ability to wash plus 28 mesh coal and nearly produce results shown to be theoretically possible by the washability study. Therefore, it is the objective of this paper to show various methods of treating the finer fractions of the coal, in the hope of developing a process, which can effectively produce in the fine fractions the efficiency of heavy media devices in the coarse.

Yucca Mountain, located in Southern Nevada approximately 160 krn northwest of Las Vegas, is currently the site of intensive surfacebased and underground investigations. The investigations are required to determine if the site is suitable for long term isolation of the Nation's high level nuclear waste inventory. A major component of the program is the Exploratory Studies Facility, or ESF. The ESF, when completed, will consist of approximately 25,600 meters of tunnels and drifts. The network of tunnels and drifts (Figure 1) will house and support a wide array of testing programs conceived to provide physical information about the site. Information on geologic, geomechanical, and hydrologic data will be used in the repository design if the site is found suitable. Besides a few special requirements, the general ESF ventilation criteria during construction are similar to that of commercial tunneling and mining operations. The minimum air velocity at the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and other active mining faces is 0.51 meter per second (m/s) (100 feet per minute [fpm]). Airways, estimated leakages and ventilation controls are converted into equivalent resistances for input to mine ventilation network computer simulations. VNETPC Version 3.1 computer software is used to generate the ventilation models for optimized system design and component selection. Subsequently, actual performance of the ventilation system will be verified and validated to comply with applicable nuclear regulatory quality assurance requirements. Dust control in the ESF is dependent on effective dust collection, enclosure, and airflow dilution. Minimum use of water, as feasible, is necessary to avoid adding moisture to the potential repository horizon. The limitation of water use for test drilling and TBM operation, and the rigid compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, make the ESF a ventilation design challenge.

Results of a long-term program of electrical parameter measurement in under-ground coal mine working sections, performed by The Pennsylvania State University under U. S. Bureau of Mines sponsorship, are utilized as the basis for an analysis of the electrical energy requirements during operation. A model section is hypothesized, developed from the average or most representative characteristics as determined from tabulations of the measurements. Performance factors of the model section's machine complement are then analyzed, particularly with regard to the energy required per ton of raw coal cut and delivered from the section. Results are given in kilowatt-hours per ton.

This paper summarizes the direct operating cash costs for the Barrick Mercur open pit gold mine. A comprehensive, detailed system of cost management has been in effect for the life of the Mercur operation. This system provides the basic data for operations control and is the basis for drafting budgets as well as analyzing impact of change on operations costs. The ore body is complex geologically and metallurgically, requiring operators to pay close attention to mining and processing costs. The cost history provides data which enables analysis of changes in production levels, aging of the mine production fleet, and the impact of specific cost changes through time.

The petroleum refining industry makes extensive use of catalysts for the conversion of crude oils into more usable products such as gasoline, fuel oil and gas, aromatics, and others. Catalysts used for hydraprocessing contain cobalt-molybdenum or nickel -molybdenum, although there are catalysts that also contain tungsten. During hydroprocessing, nickel and vanadium are deposited on the catalysts, eventually rendering them inactive. The refiners are then confronted with the problem of disposing the spent catalysts. In the past, landfilling was a common method of disposal and it is still practiced in some countries. Other refiners prefer to stockpile the spent catalysts at the refineries until the price of metals warrants their sale to metal reclaimers. This practice, however, poses environmental problems to the refineries for storage and disposal of spent catalysts. Other types of catalysts are amenable to regeneration. The purpose of this paper is to focus attention on the recovery of nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium, and alumina from spent hydroprocessing catalysts by Gulf Chemical and Metallurgical Corporation and to review the use of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate for pressure leaching of spent catalysts.

As noted by McKinstry (1948), "How to deal with erratic high samples is one of the knottiest problems in ore estimation." He described a variety of approaches and methods to alleviate the problem through the averaging and weighing of assay data and by "cutting" or "clipping" of the erratic assays. Bird (1991) elaborated on ways of dealing with the nugget effect (erratics). He listed several procedures for cutting. Bird's list has been reproduced and/or added to by several authors including Vallee (1992) and Stone and Dunn (1993). Missing from each of these otherwise excellent reviews is a definition, description or guideline to recognition of an "erratic," or just where or when cutting is warranted or justified.

During the first four decades of flotation practice, close to 200 machine designs were patented, although only about a score were ever used commercially. By the end of that period, the rigors of use had resulted in obsolescence of most pneumatic cells, with a few mechanical cells dominating the field. After World War II, newer designs began to appear but most were modifications in varying degrees of older designs with special features added. Of the dozen or so most recent developments, almost all are pneumatic, relying on compressed air instead of impellers for motive power, although in several cases pumps supplement compressors. Table 1 lists a few of the more fully documented new cells, with their significant characteristics, along with similar characteristics of a widely used mechanical cell. New designs in general are emphasizing: bubble size control; in several cases, methods for delivering feed directly to the froth; methods for introducing and dispersing air through nozzles, eductors, packed beds, or permeable walls; and variable cell volumes, relative to capacities, ranging from very small, with less than a second of retention time, to the largest, with retention times of over 20 min. An important question is the extent to which any of the newer designs are based on locating weaknesses in current mechanical cell designs and then using these as a starting point for innovations. In the present study, the key subprocesses which must take place in a cell are outlined; mechanical cells are analyzed to establish where weaknesses may exist; and then alternative subprocesses are considered which could effect improvements. COMPONENTS FOR CELL DESIGN It is assumed that mineral surface chemistry has been modified as necessary to provide optimum potential floatability. While the cell process may affect this to a degree, cell design is primarily concerned with actualizing the existing potential floatability. In portland cement manufacturing, the raw materials axe changed to clinker in the burning operation. Generally the rotary kiln is used for this purpose and involves many processes, including pelletizing and nodelizing. This transformation is called clinkering, and is analyzed as now generally practiced in cement making, from the raw material to the resulting clinker.

This paper describes the results of a comparative study of the geostatistical ore reserve estimation method over three conventional methods; the polygon method, the inverse of the distance squared (IDS) method, and ELIP which is similar to IDS. Each method was evaluated on its ability to accurately predict individual block grades for one bench of the Pima Nine, located near Tucson, Arizona. Results at the Pima Mine indicate that the geostatistical method is no better nor worse in predicting block grades and total tonnage than the ELIP or IDS methods in contrast, the polygon method is clearly inferior. All of the methods would have given better results if geology had been included in the block model. At already producing mines ELlP or IDS may be good choices since they involve substantially less cost in computer time. For prospective or new properties, the geostatistical model is more attractive, due to its ability to construct confidence limits on the estimates.

The demand or consumption of fluorspar has been somewhat taken for granted in recent years, except for the specific interest of those that produce, market, and/or consume the commodity. A tradition was established of thinking that as the steel and aluminum industry goes, so goes fluorspar. This is much less true today than in the past. The industry is becoming more dependent on chemical industries that feed primarily off hydrofluoric acid (HF) production. The Bureau of Mines recently published an assessment of world fluorspar reserves and resources that created a foundation of valuable data that can be used to monitor fluorspar availability. Celebrations were held this year commemorating the 100th anniversary of the isolation of fluorine. The United States and other countries continue to struggle with the controversy of ozone depletion and the effect of fluorocarbons on the atmosphere. The goals for the U.S. Government's strategic stockpile are being reevaluated. The market for fluorine chemicals is changing and diversifying, making it a challenge to assess and forecast fluorspar/fluorine demand. This paper reviews the recent past of fluorspar and helps set the stage for a more detailed assessment of this critical commodity.

Although calcium sulfate dihydrate, commonly referred to as gypsum, has been utilized for some time in fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) applications, it does not have the fire retardant filler recognition of ATH. Gypsum is more commonly known for application in cement, soil and water treatment, plaster, and wall-board. Inherent characteristics of gypsum limit its use to low temperature and, until recently, non-aqueous applications. However, as a plentiful, naturally occurring hydrated mineral, the cost effectiveness of calcium sulfate dihydrate has prompted development and yielded success in the areas of FRP spray-up and latex carpet backing.

Naumannite (Ag,Se), a silver selenide mineral, was first discovered in 1828. This study investigates the structure, morphology, chemical composition, and leaching kinetics of naumannite. Mechanical activation in a planetary ball mill increased its specific surface area, enhancing the leaching rate of silver in nitric acid (HNO3). The study found that mechanical activation significantly improves silver recovery.

The high costs and environmental problems associated with making iron and steel in the United states is driving the development of new technologies to replace the blast furnace. A prototype reactor incorporating rocket technology was designed and built. This rapid rate reactor was operated successfully and consistently made iron metal. Minus 32s-mesh magnetite particles could be reduced to iron metal in less than 50 ms in a high temperature flow through reactor. Iron product was recovered inside the reactor and in a downstream cyclonic separator. The results of typical operation and how parametric changes affected the reduction of iron ore concentrates are discussed.

This study presents the methodology and proposals for the restoration of an abandoned quarry in the Greek island of Milos. The local data (soil, vegetation etc.) of the island were collected, analysed and compiled into thematic maps using Geographical Information Systems. The restoration plan was based on the G.I.S. database and suggested the revegetation of the disturbed lands with herbaceous (grasses and legumes) or woody (shrubs and trees) plants. Plants should be indigenous or from other areas with the same vegetation type. Herbaceous plants establish and grow easily protecting the soil from surface erosion. The revegetation success depends on the seed quality, planting season and methods as well as local environmental conditions. Our proposals aim to restore the abandoned quarry with methods that follow the natural succession of vegetation, have minimal environmental impact, low cost and the expected result will be similar to the surrounding undisturbed land.
