The identification of the major subsidence areas in the Western Kentucky Coal Field has been made to distinguish the subsidence phenomena on the basis of geographical location Further, this identification process is based upon selected critical geological, topographical, and mining features in the coal fields. The proposed identification of the regions is derived from a comparison of the subsidence potential in a particular area. The most likely severe subsidence areas are compared to those with the probable low subsidence severity. The combination of certain geological and mining parameters involved allows for the derivation of a classification of the subsidence potential. It is recommended that further site specific studies should be performed on this area.

The Ontario Division of The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, operates five underground mines and one open pit on the rim of the Sudbury Basin located in the Province of Ontario, 230 miles northwest of Toronto. Four of the mines, Frood-Stobie, Creighton, Murray and Garson, lie on the South range of the Basin within a 10-mile radius of the City of Sudbury; the fifth mine, Levack, is on the North range, about 30 miles northwest of the city. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper, the principal minerals being pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Other elements recovered from the ores in varying quantities are platinum, palladium, ruthenium, iridium, rhodium, cobalt, selenium, tellurium, iron, sulphur, gold and silver. In 1962, the total underground ore production was over 10,800,000 tons which was mined mainly by blasthole and caving methods with the remainder by cut-and-fill, square set, and undercut-and-fill techniques.

The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. A review of the the more common evaluation tests made on coal and how the test results are applied in commercial practice. Parameters used to select coal blends for wet and preheated charges should also be of interest.

An important factor in filtration is the zeta potential of the particles. Since zeta potential is a function of pH, it was hypothesized that adding CO would lower the pH and zeta potential. A reduction in zeta potential should enhance the flocculation and increase the filtration rate. This paper describes the effects CO on the zeta potential of both pure hematite and samples of hematite concentrate from an iron ore processing plant. A significant shift in the zeta potential, as a function of pH, curve was observed. These results point to an alteration of the particles mineralogy, not just a shift in pH.

A new method of slaking lime has been developed by DENVER EQUIPMENT DIVISION of Joy Industrial Equipment Company and patented under U. S. Patent 4,261,953. The new method utilizes an attrition machine, commonly used in mineral processing circuits as a sand scrubbing device, to slake lime. The scrubbing effect of the attrition slaker continuously produces a fresh reactive surface so that further slaking may occur. This process allows for utilization of slaking all grades of burnt lime and most grades of dolomite lime. Testing indicates that poor grades of water usually not considered for this service can now be tolerated using the attrition slaker. The slaked lime produced is of higher quality, faster reacting and much less apt to produce scaling problems than previously experienced. The attrition slaker can be combined with a spiral classifier and ball mill to eliminate any need for grit handling or grit removal. The attrition slaker can be designed for all burnt lime tonnages up to the limit of 175 tph and 1" pebble lime size. Control can be maintained easily with minimal operator assistance. The equipment, the principals of process metallurgy, and the above topics will be presented.

Introduction Backfilling of mine voids is used to prevent or control the effects of subsidence on surface structures. The pumped-slurry, blind backfilling process has been successful for stabilizing ground over abandoned and inaccessible underground coal mines. This article describes the systematic evaluation of potential monitoring systems that would improve backfill monitoring technology. It also details field proof-of-concept tests that were conducted on two systems and the difficulties encountered in implementing them. Ground subsidence over abandoned mines can have devastating effects on overlying urban areas decades after the closing of room-and-pillar mines. The result may be cracked foundations, ruptured gas and water lines, broken sewers, distortion or cracking in superstructures, and sinks and potholes in the ground surface. About 32,000 km2 (8 million acres) of land in the US has been undermined for coal. According to the US General Accounting Office, 8,100 km2 (2 million acres) have undergone subsidence and another 8,100 km2 (2 million acres) are expected to subside by the year 2000. Actual figures on land affected or threatened by subsidence are probably much higher, since these estimates were based on late 1960s studies. For more than two decades, the US Bureau of Mines has been engaged in stabilizing ground in urban areas having high risk potential for subsidence costing millions of dollars. Thousands of acres have been stabilized, protecting property worth hundreds of millions of dollars. In earlier years, backfilling was by in-mine stowing in accessible mines or by gravity-feed sluicing methods in inaccessible mines. Pumped-slurry methods have been used extensively in the past 10 years. More slurry can be injected for fill from fewer injection holes over extensive areas in abandoned mines. Since this method requires fewer boreholes, there is less disruption of surface facilities. An investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of using advanced, remote sensing or monitoring technology for application in monitoring fill placement. Specifically, the objective was to develop conceptual systems for blind backfill monitoring that require fewer boreholes and give better definition than is now possible. Blind Backfilling Methods Blind backfilling operations are conducted from the surface and do not require personnel and equipment underground. These methods are applicable to abandoned, inaccessible workings. Two categories of blind back-filling are point support, practiced by civil engineers to protect individual structures or surface facilities, and areal backfilling methods, used to protect large areas against subsidence. Point Support Methods Point support methods are usually gravity-feed systems. In general, point support methods use small volumes of expensive fill material and require a large number of boreholes within a constructed site. Because of the processed material used for back-filling and the close spacing of the injection boreholes, control and monitoring often may be accomplished by borehole cameras. Areal Backfilling Areal backfilling is conducted mainly by the pumped-slurry injection process (Fig. 1). There are no formulas that guarantee success when it comes to obtaining zoning approval for mineral aggregate mining. Local land use decisions often times represent the most controversial issues faced by community. Public awareness, concern, willingness to get involved, sensitivity to the environment and probably most importantly fear of change only begin to describe the atmosphere in which local land use decisions are made. Add to this the public hearing process which is quasi judicial, adversarial, and unfortunately not designed for resolution of disputes and it is not difficult to see the need for an alternative to present methods. Hopefully, some day we will have a process that will do away with or at least minimize unnecessary, unproductive and unmanageable community conflicts.

Does your company reward its top people? Does coal or copper pay more? Production or engineering? How is the synfuels industry going to influence mining salaries? Do high salaries attract and retain the best people? Do modern compensation systems ensure fairness or destroy entrepreneurial spirit? With our tax system and high standard of living why are we so salary conscious? Salary is not only important for what it can purchase but it is also a yardstick, measuring how well we are doing. We all need money to pay the bills and maintain our standard-of-living, but once we reach a certain point the psychological ramifications become more important than the purely practical side. Even necessary payments like the mortgage and the car are a function of our egos. Are our choices of cars and homes based on simple transportation and shelter?

Bong Mining Company/Liberia provides the rare opportunity to compare two generations of grate kiln pelletizing plants operating on the same magnetite/hematite ore basis. In this paper advantages and drawbacks are compared: mechanical aspects, energy-savings, pellet quality. Plant I with up- and down-draft drying gas flow. Plant II runs only on down draft drying and incorporates a heat-recoup system. Ferteco Mineracao/Brazil operates a Lurgi straight grate plant since 1977 on hematitic pelletfeed. Energy-political situation and char- coal as energy source in Brazil are reflected also in the search for alternative fuels for pelletizing. First measures and results are reported as well as intended further steps towards a 100 % oil replacement.

"Understanding the airflow patterns in and around the longwall panel can help to identify poorly ventilated areas that may be prone to methane accumulation. Ventilation network modeling provides quick simulation time, and flexibility in adjusting airway parameters and ventilation controls. Such modeling is effective for analyzing linear ventilation networks in underground mines, but cannot compute flows in caved areas of hard rock mines or longwall gobs. The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) enables a more detailed investigation of the interaction between the airflows in these caved areas but requires much longer computational times, designing complex meshes and determination of a variety of modeling parameters. Airway friction factors and ventilation controls are simple to implement in a network model but can be difficult to model and adjust in CFD. This paper will focus on using mine ventilation network simulation to identify and analyze key parameters that are affecting airflow distribution in and around the longwall panels, prior to more detailed analysis with CFD modeling, using the example of a longwall coal mine. INTRODUCTION In longwall coal mine ventilation systems common in the U.S., the main purpose of bleeder ventilation is to dilute methane gas and prevent the formation of explosive gas mixtures in the caved, poorly ventilated gob areas and adjacent mine workings. In longwall operation, these critical areas include the development headings inby the longwall face, and the gob. Methane-air explosions in these areas may be ignited by spontaneous combustion, rock-on-rock friction and other sources. Although rare, ignitions due to rock-on-rock friction caused by roof falls caving into the longwall gob are possible and were suspected in the Willow Creek mine explosions in 1998 and 2000 (Elkins et al., 2001; McKinney et al., 2001). Rock-on-rock frictional ignitions are difficult to prevent, as they occur in inaccessible areas. Therefore, rendering the gob area inert is essential to prevent the formation of explosive mixtures. Research by Gilmore et al. (2015) and Brune et al. (2015) has shown that gob inertization can be a difficult or impossible when using bleeder systems, since the flow of gases through the gob depends on the gob permeability and the amount of fresh air leaking from the face and the immediate roof caving conditions cannot be controlled by the mine operator. Having the ability to predict the location where explosive gas zones (EGZs) form inside the gob will be helpful for designing the best ventilation setup to minimize explosion and fire risks."

The Malmberget Division of LKAB is located 70 km north of the arctic circle and has about 2000 employees. The dominating products are sinter feed concentrate and pellets. A general flow sheet for the operation is shown in Figure 1. About 20 percent of the ore body consists of hematite, which is mined separately and processed into sinter feed concentrate. That pert of the ore consisting of magnetite passes through a dry cobbing plant. The robbing process includes crushing, screening and dry magnetic separation. The entire cobbing product is used as feed for the wet concentrator. After rod mill grinding and magnetic separation the concentrated slurry is classified. The coarse fraction (+200 mesh) becomes sinter feed concentrate and the slime fraction after further ball mill grinding and magnetic separation, becomes pelletizing feed. A small quantity of the magnetite ore is processed into special iron-rich products in the the wet concentrator. Two types of pelletizing plant are used, shaft furnace and straight grate. This paper will deal only with experience gained at the straight grate plant.

"The McCook Main Tunnel connects Chicago’s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir. The tunnel system consists of a 10 m (33 ft) finished diameter and 490-m (1,600-ft) long hard-rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5-m (90-ft) diameter and 92 m (300 ft) deep main gate shaft. The gate shaft houses six high-head 4.4 x 9 m (14.5 x 29.5 ft) wheel gates installed in the bifurcated and steel-lined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir. Construction of the McCook Main Tunnel in live flow conditions was a challenging task for the McCook Main Tunnel Project participants, the project owner U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), local sponsor Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago, designer Black & Veatch and contractor Kiewit Infrastructure Co. (Kiewit). Once completed in two stages in 2017 and 2029, the McCook Reservoir will hold 38 billion L (10 billion gal) of combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flood waters from the city of Chicago and 36 surrounding communities in Cook County, IL The construction of the tunnel system was divided into two contracts. The first contract for the gate and construction access shaft was completed in August 2011. The second contract included tunnel excavation and concrete and steel lining that was completed in September 2014; installation of gates and hydraulic cylinders that was completed in June 2017; and the last major construction activity was the removal of a temporary concrete plug (bulkhead) and lining that tunnel section to bring the overall tunnel and gates system online before Dec. 31, 2017.This article focuses on the installation, testing and commissioning of the high head wheel gates. Live tunnel connection details to TARP Mainstream Tunnel were addressed in a previous paper submitted at the World Tunneling Conference in 2016."

Mining law is essentially a branch of the law of real property. It concerns acquisition of property for extracting contained minerals, and the rights, privileges and duties that fall upon the holder thereof once the rights are acquired Accordingly, this section focuses on the procedures to be followed in acquiring state. federal and private lands, and defines briefly the nature of the rights obtained. The mining laws of Canada and Mexico are summarized, and the related subjects of minerals taxation and governmental regulation are discussed briefly. This section is not intended to be the basis for legal decisions. Rather, its purpose is to provide the engineer with an understanding of basic principles and procedures. For a detailed treatise of mining law, reference can be made to The American Law o] Mining, a five-volume set edited by the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation. The law changes constantly, especially that based on federal and state statutes, and the reader is cautioned to be alert for subsequent modifications of statutes, regulations and case law. 2.1-PRELIMINARY LAND-STATUS CHECK Often, after completion of area reconnaissance, or perhaps after receipt of a submittal, a specific more localized target area will become of interest. Usually, an intensive exploration program comprising detailed surface mapping, sampling, geophysical prospecting and drilling will be required before the mineral potential of the ground can be properly evaluated. Before an investment of this magnitude is made, however, it is advisable to obtain rights to mine ore from the property. Otherwise, knowledge of the exploration activity might greatly inflate land values, or speculators or competing mining concerns might step in. Hence, as a general rule, a land-acquisition program should be undertaken before an intensive exploration project is begun. The first step in such a program is to make a land-status check to determine whether the subject lands are available and, if so, from whom they can be obtained and by what means. 2.1.1-BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT RECORDS In those states which contain large areas of federal land, basically (he western states, the primary informational source is the records of the Bureau of Land Management. These may t)e examined at the land office having jurisdiction over federal lands in the area of interest. The records for Montana and North and South Dakota are kept at the Billings (Mont ) land office; Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas, Cliejenne, Wyo.; New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, Santa Fe, N M ; northern Alaska, Fairbanks, and southern, Anchorage; Utah, Salt Lake City; Nevada, Reno; Arizona, Phoenix; Colorado, Denver. There are two land offices in California, at Sacramento and Los Angeles Records for other states are kept in Washington, D C. at the office of the Director, Bureau of Land Management.

Geological Aspects of Ore Reserve Estimates of Pine Point District Zinc- Lead Deposits, N.W.T. Zinc-lead ores of the Pine Point District, Northwest Territories, Canada are hosted in paleokarst cavities within a Middle Devonian carbonate barrier complex. Of the nearly 100 deposits found, most are irregularly distributed along two main regional stratigraphically controlled trends. The ores, which occur predominantly as open space filling, form deposits most of which average one million tonnes in size with an average grade of 10% combined zinc plus lead. Geological features related to karsting control not only distribution of deposits but also their shape, size and grade. The higher grade ore in these deposits generally occurs in a relatively small core area. Consequently, accuracy of reserve estimation is dependent on drill hole density and understanding of karst geometry. Several case examples will be reviewed to demonstrate the relationship between shape, size and grade of deposit, geological reserves and drill hole density, along with a discussion of geological ore reserve estimation methods.

Restoration of abandoned mine sites is still one of the weak points of mining practice. The latter stands especially for the case of the surface coal and lignite exploitations, where the extended size of the disturbed land and the drastic changes to the geomorphologic features do not facilitate the implementation of a cost effective and environmentally sound reclamation plan. The paper examines the parameters involved towards the legal requirements for the reclamation of the first lignite exploitation in Greece, namely the ?Plakes? mine, located at Euboea, due to the particularities of the site. Then an integrated redesign procedure is presented, aiming at minimizing aesthetic degradation, confronting technical difficulties and preparing the site to accept new uses.

The molecular form of aliphatic amines precipitates in alkaline solutions when the amine solubility limit is exceeded and forms a typical colloidal system. The zones of mines precipitation and micellization are defined and it is shown that the appearance of a colloidal system in a certain pH range is a unique feature that makes weak electrolyte type surfactants differ from strong electrolytes. The formation of iono-molecular complexes reported in the literature is shown to be a pre-precipitation phenomenon. The zeta potential - pH curves for minerals and bubbles in the presence of amines in the pH range where the amine forms a colloidal precipitate are entirely determined by the precipitate. The pH dependence of the flotation of certain minerals using amines is discussed in the light of these findings.

High brightness clays are produced from Georgia kaolin by flotation. Fatty acids are used commonly as collectors for anatase, which represents the major colored impurity in the crude. This process requires activation of the minerals with divalent cations such as Ca2+, in which case proper control of the activation step is crucial to the success of the flotation process. In the present work, laboratory tests have been conducted using alkyl hydroxamates as the collector for anatase. A major advantage of using hydroxamate is that this new collector requires no activator. The laboratory tests show also that the hydroxamate collectors produce consistently better products with higher yields from a variety of kaolin clays.

INTRODUCTION The global market for sulphur has experienced dramatic structural shifts during the past 10-15 years. After a number of years of dominance as sulphur suppliers, the world's Frasch producers were confronted with large increases in nondiscretionary sulphur production from sour crude oil and gas, while escalating energy and exploration costs reduced the economic incentives to replace dwindling sulphur reserves. Sulphur demand also experienced substantial growth, but the majority of this increase was filled by nondiscretionary production. The result was essentially flat demand for Frasch sulphur during this period. This paper briefly summarizes Freeport Sulphur Company's outlook for global supply and demand for sulphur through the year 2000, and examines in more detail the history and anticipated shifts in trade patterns. World trade in elemental sulphur (brimstone), despite year-to-year fluctuations, has been on an upward trend in recent years, and should continue to grow through the end of this century. The type (discretionary vs. nondiscretionary) and location of forecast sulphur supply sources has potentially broad implications for the world's Frasch producers, as they compete in a world market which is increasingly supplied by non-discretionary production. SULPHUR DEMAND Sulphur is a versatile and essential element used in a wide variety of manufacturing processes. Almost 90% of world sulphur consumption is in the form of sulphuric acid. The relatively low cost, ready availability, and physical and chemical properties of sulphuric acid make it the most economical acid for a number of chemical processes. Although sulphur is used in the manufacture of many products, the largest consumer by far is the phosphate fertilizer industry. The majority of sulphur demand growth over the past 30 years has occurred in this area, and today it accounts for nearly 65% of global sulphur consumption in all forms. Due to the relative importance of phosphate fertilizers, sulphur demand is typically discussed in terms of fertilizer and non-fertilizer (or industrial) uses, and this approach will be followed here. We at Freeport believe that global consumption of phosphate fertilizers should grow at an average annual rate of about 3.5% through the year 2000, which is roughly equal to the growth rate experienced during the past ten years. The basic assumption underlying this forecast is that world population will continue to grow significantly, while the total acres of cropland will grow only slightly. Therefore, in order to feed a growing population, higher crop yields will be necessary, which in turn will require the increasing use of fertilizers. This expected growth in phosphate consumption will, without doubt, fluctuate from year to year, and we Frasch producers have painful memories of the large dip in demand during 1982-83. However, we believe that the fundamentals for growth are very good, and that future demand will move back onto the historical trend line. In the recent recession the use of sulphur in the non-fertilizer or industrial sector dropped sharply, and it now appears that future growth will not return to the old trend line. Most of the non-fertilizer uses of sulphur and sulphuric acid involve older industries which are very mature, such as oil refining, steel, pulp and paper, pigments, etc. The use of sulphur in some of these industries is expected to exhibit little or possibly even negative
