He worked at the Falconbridge in Sudbury area, also at Brenda Mines, and then he became part of the Brenda Process Technology group in British Columbia. He joined Freeport in late 1993 in Indonesia, and was involved in process control and automation. He is now the senior manager of metallurgy in New Orleans. He's responsible for designing Freeport's new 100,000-ton-per-day expansion concentrator, which is currently being commissioned. Please welcome Andrew. ANDREW NEALE: With the ongoing explosion in digital computing power, there seems to be no limit to what can be modeled, simulated, and controlled in the mineral processing plant. However, at each stage of development of a control system, it is necessary to complete a cost-benefit analysis for justifying the move to a higher level of control. Incremental improvements in plant performance, while often significant, must be weighed against the costs of implementation and long-term maintenance. This presentation will provide examples of what the author believes are misplaced or misguided process control efforts and make a case for the KISS principle as applied to process control.

Minnesota is a major mining state. This statement is not a dream or stretch goal but is a fact. As reported in a recent edition of Mining Engineering magazine, Minnesota ranks as the third largest state in terms revenues generated from nonfuels mineral production. The vibrancy of the mining sector in Minnesota can be attributed to several factors. The northeastern corner of the state is home to Minnesota?s iron range, one of North America?s largest deposits of iron ore. Iron ore from Minnesota is a strategic resource that has been [ ] instrumental to the nation?s development ? 90 percent of the iron used to build ships and planes during World War II came from Minnesota. Taconite pellets now produced from openpit mines on the iron range are shipped to steel mills worldwide. The growing appetite for steel in China and India has reignited once moribund mining operations throughout the iron range.

Acid-Base Accounting (ABA) is an analytical procedure that provides values to help assess the acid-producing and acid-neutralizing potential of overburden rocks prior to coal mining and other large-scale excavations. This procedure was developed by West Virginia University scientists during the 1960s. After the passage of laws requiring an assessment of surface mining on water quality, ABA became a preferred method to predict post-mining water quality,and permitting decisions for surface mines are largely based on thevalues determined by ABA. In order to predict the post-mining water quality, the amount of acid-producing rock is compared to the amount of acid-neutralizing rock, and a prediction of the water quality at the site (whether acid or alkaline) is obtained. We gathered geologic and geographic data for 56 mined sites in West Virginia, which allowed us to estimate total overburden amounts, and values for maximum potential acidity (MPA), neutralization potential (NP), net neutralization potential (NNP), and NP/MPA ratios for each site based on ABA. These values were correlated to post-mining water quality from springs or seeps on the mined property. Overburden mass was determined by three methods, with the method used by Pennsylvania researchers showing the most accurate results to actual overburden mass. A poor relationship existed between MPA and post-mining water quality, NP was intermediate, and NNP and the NP/MPA ratio showed the best prediction accuracy. In this study, NNP and the NP/MPA ratio gave identical water quality prediction results. Therefore using NP/MPA ratios, values were separated into categories: <1 should produce acid drainage, between 1 and 2 can produce either acid or alkaline water conditions, and >2 should produce alkaline water. On our 56 surface mined sites, NP/MPA ratios varied from 0.1 to 31, and six sites (11%) did not fit the expected pattern using this category approach. Two of eight sites with ratios <1 did not produce acid drainage as predicted (the drainage was neutral), and four of 40 sites with a ratio >2 produced acid drainage when they should not have. These latter four sites were either mined very slowly, had non-representative ABA data, received water from an adjacent underground mine, or had a surface mining practice that degraded the water. In general, an NP/MPA ratio of <1 produced acid or neutral drainage sites, between 1 and 2 produced mostly alkaline drainage sites, while NP/MPA ratios of >2 produced alkaline drainage with a few exceptions. ABA is a good tool to assess overburden quality before surface mining and to predict post-mining drainage quality after mining. The interpretation from ABA values was correct in 50 out of 52 cases (96%), excluding the four anomalous sites, which had acid water for reasons other than overburden quality.

INTRODUCTION In the early 1950s, underground miners and tunnel¬ing contractors were experimenting with ways to supple¬ment or eliminate track-bound loading and hauling equipment. Diesel-powered crawler and rubber-tire mounted front-end loaders and trucks designed for use on the surface were being modified and tried with limited but encouraging success. Miners began working with interested manufacturers to explore the develop¬ment of vehicles specifically designed to meet the de¬mands and constraints of underground material han¬dling. By the mid 1960s, load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicles were firmly established as a fundamental part of what has become known as the "trackless" mining concept, used in many mines and many countries around the world. The flexibility, mobility, and versatility of these units have given the industry a useful tool and have added new dimensions to mine development and produc¬tion. Many old mines have been redesigned to accom¬modate these trackless vehicles, and few new mining plans have failed to find some use for the concept during some phase of development and production. By 1977, several manufacturers in several different countries were producing a variety of LHD vehicles to meet the growing worldwide demand. GENERAL DESCRIPTION LHD vehicles combine certain characteristics of conventional front-end loaders and dump trucks, spe¬cifically designed for materials handling in underground mining and tunneling. The design intent is to provide one vehicle with one man, with the vehicle loading itself, hauling the load over level or inclined haulageways, and dumping the load. A typical production cycle of the most popular units has the operator driving the vehicle forward, forcing the bucket into the muck at or near floor level, and using the tractive effort of the vehicle and the prying action of the bucket to roll out and tilt back the load as shown in Fig. 1. With the bucket rolled back into the carrying position on the boom and the boom resting on the main frame of the vehicle, the load is hauled (trammed) to the dump point as shown in Fig. 2. At the dump point, the boom is raised, the bucket is rolled forward, and the load slides out as shown in Fig. 3. After dumping, the bucket is rolled back to the carrying position, the boom is returned to rest on the main frame, and the unit is driven back to the loading point for another load. There are two other types of LHD units that are slightly different in the cycles that they perform. One uses a hopper arrangement carried on the front of the machine, with a small bucket mounted ahead of the hopper. Several passes with the small bucket load the hopper, which is dumped by opening its floor. Al¬though this concept is several years old, it has gained less than 0.5% of the total market. The most recent LHD concept differs in that it has one bucket nesting inside another. The smaller inner bucket is loaded first, and it is then tilted back and above the larger bucket. When the larger bucket has been loaded, it is rolled back, and the total load is trammed to the dumping point. The dumping operation tilts the buckets in the reverse order from that of the loading operation. The impact of this new concept on the mining industry has not been measured yet. This chapter concentrates on the LHD vehicles employing the cycle described by Figs. 1 through 3, since these LHD units constitute an estimated 99% of the units in current use. "Key project participants, including owners, engineers, and contractors continually seek for sound and structured decision analysis on how to select the best contracting method for successful project delivery. In addition to being burdened with technical challenges, lack of resources, budget shortcomings, regulatory requirements, and bureaucratic and politically mandated obstacles, the project participants need a reliable decision analysis model on the best project delivery method. The pendulum of choice for contracting continually swings back and forth between traditional design-bid-build and alternative delivery options such as design-build, progressive design-build, construction manager at risk, and public-private-partnership. For large tunnel projects, the decision process is further complicated due to contract packaging options as well as risks in underground construction. Contracting strategies for large tunnels require thorough consideration of performance, risk, quality, operability, cost and schedule. This paper compiles an array of decision making criteria and tools for an unbiased and balanced evaluation and ranking system in the procurement of large tunneling projects. INTRODUCTION Successful project delivery hinges upon meeting the owners’ expectations and key performance indicators. Large tunneling programs benefit from a thorough understanding and successful implementation of project delivery options by key project participants including the owners, engineers and contractors. The key to success is a collaborative advancement of project as the key project participants knowledgably address the applicable management, performance, risk, quality, cost, operability and schedule considerations throughout a project realization cycle. PROJECT REALIZATION CYCLE All projects have customary planning, design, construction, commissioning and operation phases that may seem to be sequential but in reality that are well integrated and dependent on one another. A glitch in any phase of a project realization cycle could hinder a successful outcome and none of the project partners are immune to consequences whenever and wherever they may surface."

Utah Development Company (UDC) operates five large opencut coal mines in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland, Australia. In total, over 20 million tonnes of coking coal are exported annually from the five mines. Typically, the coal seams dip at 5 percent, are 2 to 10 metres thick, and sub-crop some 20 to 40 metres below surface. In the main, the operations are single seam, but multiseam (2, 3 or 4 seams) operations do exist and will form an increasing proportion of the mining activities as depths increase. Draglines are used as the major stripping equipment, highwall depths currently ranging from 20 to 65 metres. Whilst project feasibilities were based on stripping to a 60 metre highwall, it is now proposed to continue opencut mining to depths exceeding 100 metres. This will entail large quantities of prestripping (ahead of the draglines) and overcoming problems associated with steepening seam dips, including haulage of coal from the pits.

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, one of the world&apos;s largest iron ore producers, operates a 3.0 million tonne per year pelletizing facility at Dampier in Western Australia. The plant produces pellets for the export market using a blend of natural hematite fines from the Company&apos;s two mines at Tom Price and Paraburdoo. Processing includes fluidised-bed drying of the ore feed, open circuit dry grinding, disc balling and pellet induration in a travelling grate furnace of Dravo-Lurgi design.

Traditional aggregate sources, that is the riverbeds, the alluvial fans, located relatively close to the developing urban centers are being foreclosed to mining. As the sand and gravel reserves are depleted, those production plants are unable to secure additional adjacent reserves and are being forced to close down. The sand and gravel industry, in many respects, is its own worst enemy. We promote development, we promote the paving of streets, the building of houses, and industrial and commercial centers, and because of economics, we tend to favor those developments located close to our operations. Thus, we encourage development by our neighbors who soon become our detractors. In general, urban development is not compatible with sand and gravel mining. The neighbors don&apos;t like the view of the pits or the quarries, they complain about the "dust", about noise, about trucking . . . in general, the neighbors are not happy being close to an aggregate source.

A comprehensive, site specific water management plan is of primary importance to the successful implementation, operation and decommissioning of any mining project. Formulation of a plan requires an orderly planning process consisting of identifying problems, establishing planning criteria based on the guidelines and requirements of regulatory agencies, and an iterative procedure of identifying, investigating, and evaluating plan elements and alternative plans. A typical uranium surface mine operation consists of a mine pit or pits, spoil pile areas, crusher, processing plant, and tailings disposal area. A water control plan addresses the problems of diversion of natural runoff from undisturbed areas around the mine; and diversion, collection, and treatment of runoff from within the mine area. A water control plan is required to determine the location and size of appropriate control and detention structures; their cost; and the schedule for permit activity, design, and construction. The plan must be formulated to meet the requirements of both the State and Federal regulatory agencies.

This work focused on identifying, examining and ranking the physical and environmental hazards at inactive and abandoned mine sites in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Earlier inventory projects in the Black Hills concentrated on federal lands, while more recent efforts have examined abandoned mines on state and private lands. The more recent efforts are a result of passage of legislation by the State of South Dakota requiring a comprehensive inventory. The inventory information provides criteria for identifying those sites that require further investigation or characterization of the physical safety or environmental hazards. For most AML sites in the Black Hills, location information is all that is typically needed, because the majority of sites pose little environmental or physical hazard.

Fragmentation by blasting is a critical process in hard rock mining. The blasting process and outcomes are highly influenced by rock mass properties and their response to higher stresses and loading rates. Each rock mass is unique, but some features affect the blast energy similarly, leading to similar outcomes. Having analyzed these features and their influence on blast results, they can be incorporated into the blast design to achieve better outcomes. This paper presents a numerical model validated by a case study from the actual mine blasts that studied the effect of rock mass properties on explosive energy production, attenuations, and overall blast outcomes. The results show that when the model parameters are calibrated based on real data, they can be used to simulate the fragmentation process and therefore be used to aid blast design.

The justification for a "ligand- selective&apos; approach to fine mineral beneficiation via flocculation is established initially. Special emphasis is placed upon the need to identify non-selective, interfering and complicating adsorption effects. Specific strategies directed towards the design and synthesis of complementary selective flocculants are detailed using a number of different polymers and chelating agents as examples. In this regard, the affinity of polymer-bound ligands for metallic cations, ligand concentration, possible modes of attachment, the application of spaced-out ligands and other considerations in the preparation of selective flocculants are highlighted.

Philippines is a country that is richly endowed in mineral wealth. In 1988, Climax Arimco Mining Corp. (CAMC) geologists found the Dinkidi porphyry gold-copper deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province. It is the most significant mineral discovery in that country in recent times. To date, the company has defined indicated resources of 124 Mt (136 million st) of 1-g/t (0.029-oz/st) gold and 0.4% copper. This includes a high-grade core of 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) of 6-g/t (0.175-oz/st) gold equivalent. Total contained metal is 124.4 t (4 million oz) of gold and 499 kt (1.1 billion lb) of copper. Dinkidi&apos;s discovery resulted from initial geologic reconnaissance and recognition of the intrusive complex that is exposed at surface and anomalous in its topographic expression. This was followed by systematic exploration. This includes extensive gradient array induced polarization (IP), ground magnetics, geochemical sampling and diamond drilling. This later defined a further 16 satellite porphyry targets in the Didipio region. Climax was been granted a Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement contract with the Philippine government. It allows 100% foreign ownership of mining projects. After four years of negotiations, Climax was the first company to have such an application granted. Some 120 applications from numerous international mining companies are waiting for approval following implementation of new Philippine Mining Act of 1995. Exploration history Didipio is located 200 km (125 miles) north of Manila at an elevation of about 700 m (2,300 ft) in the remote Sierra Madre mountains. This region remains mostly unexplored. The property is accessed by 25 km (15 miles) of logging track from the town of Cabarroguis, Quirino. The area experiences an average rainfall of about 3,000 mm (118 in.) a year. Most of it falls during the July-to-November typhoon season. Didipio was first recognized as a gold province in the 1970s when native Ifugao and Ilongot hunters discovered alluvial gold in the region. The region had been prospected over the years by local companies. They were mostly prospecting for alluvial gold. However, in 1988, Climax Mining geologists identified the potential of an obscure razorback ridge protruding from the alluvial valley floor. This ridge, later named Dinkidi by Climax, was the site of several small- scale tunnels. Locals had mined narrow quartz stockwork veining and sluiced soft argillic alteration zones, using irrigation canals and sluice boxes to catch free gold.

The extraction of industrial minerals is usually confined to relatively small mining operations. The recent COSMAR (Committee on Surface Mining and Reclamation) report found that 93% of all mines in the United States were of the small unit variety. Also, of the total number of mines in the U.S. (15,279) 96% were in the industrial minerals (non-metals excluding coal) category. To break it down further, 86% were sand and gravel, and crushed stone operations. Therefore, we are talking about a very large number of small mining operations. If these small miners can afford to hire a college graduate, what kind of training should this person have beyond the normal mining engineering curriculum to best serve the problems that he or she will encounter?

The design of an aquifer depressurization system is discussed. The system uses a number of wells surrounding a mine shaft to reduce the aquifer pressure in the vicinity of the shaft. The effect of various parameters such as number of wells, wellbore diameter, time and well location is discussed. It is concluded that, with a properly designed depressurization system, the aquifer pressure and the water inflow rate to the shaft may be reduced to less than 15X of their potential values in the absence of wells

Analytical models for transient groundwater phenomena, such as those of Theis, Cooper, and Jacob, are important but often limited tools for aquifer evaluation and drawdown prediction. Most were developed using simplifying assumptions which compromise their treatment of complex boundaries and most also contain functions that are mathematically complex and difficult to solve explicitly. Examples of such functions are the Bessel functions, the exponential integral, and similar well functions for leaky confined and water table aquifers. This paper describes the joint use of simple numerical techniques and numerical approximations of these functions to extend many analytical models beyond their conventional applications. The enhanced analytical methods represent many hydrologic problems more easily and realistically, permit a wider range of application, and often provide insight into the response of pumped groundwater systems without the need to resort to more complex numerical flow models. Use of the enhanced analytical methods usually requires the use of microcomputers due to the large number of computations. Examples presented here are the development and extension of type curves and the determination of drawdown distributions.

Managing a mine or mineral processing operation in today&apos;s environment presents many unique challenges to mining companies. In recent years, headlines around the world have publicized major incidents such as those associated with the Marcopper Mine in the Philippines, the cyanide release in Guyana from the Omai gold mine and numerous other mishaps associated with mining. These notable upsets were due to engineered system failures, either during normal operations or as a result of uncontrollable events. There fore, many mining firms are attempting to assess their overall risks and establish some priority for expenditure of limited operational and environmental budgets. Failure of an engineered component can have dire operational consequences that affect profitability until repair or replacement can be completed. In addition, there may be significant environmental consequences associated with the engineered system failure. This, too, may affect profitability for an extended time or even the viability of an operation. An engineered risk assessment (ERA) can support a mining company&apos;s efforts to cost effectively manage environmental risks associated with the operation of its facilities. The ERA approach also provides information about the current condition of engineered systems. This ERA approach provides a systematic review of the risks of an engineered system failure and the possible associated environmental consequences at mining company facilities. This approach has been successfully applied to many industries and types of engineered systems (Barneich et al, 1996; Whitman, 1984; Power and Tomkins, 1974; Keeney, Nair, and Kulkarni, 1979). This approach evaluates all mining and mineral processing facilities located at a single site and compares them with similar facilities located at multiple mine sites. The ERA approach has been applied to a mining, milling, smelting, leaching and refining operations. These assessments can be part of a comprehensive environmental program to aid in the recognition and cost effective management of the potential environmental risks associated with the operation of facilities. Canada still remains today a strong resource nation with a huge geological potential. Canada ranks among the top five leading countries in the production of 15 major minerals. Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a serious environmental problem that preoccupies the Canadian Mining Industry. Considerable amounts of money are spent every year in an effort to prevent or reduce the acid mine drainage production. It is estimated that across Canada there are a few thousand abandoned mine sites as a result of the last fifty years of mining. Most of these sites are acid producing presenting a serious threat to the environment. It has been estimated that the cost of stabilizing and reclaiming these sites across Canada will be over $5 billion over the next twenty years. Current practices for decommissioning acid producing sites are water covers (flooding), dry covers, revegetation and treatment of the acid effluents. This paper presents the technical and legal issues of mine closure and reclamation in Canada. The methods used in the revegetation of acid producing mine sites is also presented This paper also reviews the financial guarantee requirements for mine closure by the provincial legislations in Canada. A case study of stabilizing and reclaiming a sulphide tailings area in the Sudbury region is presented. It illustrates the challenges facing the Canadian Government and the mining companies in restoring and revegetating the closed and abandoned mine sites across Canada.

The production of portland cement requires that four basic elements -- calcium, silica, alumina and iron -- be ground to a fine powder, homogenized, and fed to the pyroprocessing unit, where it is burned to a cement clinker. The raw material must either be ground wet in a slurry form or dried and ground to a dry powder, with a fineness of approximately 85% passing the 200 M screen. According to the Portland Association&apos;s Plant Information Summary, approximately 38% of the U.S. capacity is ground wet and 62% ground dry. "INTRODUCTION Many major cities in the United States have a combined storm water and sanitary sewer network. Regular rainfall overwhelms the system capacity and results in millions of cubic meters of untreated sewage being dumped into local waterways. One legally mandated solution includes several kilometers of large diameter shallow or deep rock or soil tunnels, a pump station as well as associated collection sewers, diversion structures and drop shafts. In this paper, the basis for design of different system elements including the drop shafts and pump station is explained in detail. Common construction methods used for different type of shafts including tangential vortex and baffle plunge, and also pump station alternatives comprising cavern or various shaft configurations are discussed. DIFFERENT TYPES OF PUMP STATIONS The dewatering pump station serves as the heart of any deep CSO tunnel system and is critical to the goal of reducing CSOs by providing a controlled release of the stored tunnel volume to the wastewater treatment plant. As the major mechanical component of the project, the station will require the greatest attention by operations and maintenance staff. Designing a durable and easily operated pump station requires addressing some major challenges, including the following: • Longevity – equipment, materials of construction, and station environment • Controlling odors • Safety for operators and maintenance personnel • Easy access to equipment • Protection from hydraulic surges Location. Owners face a fundamental decision relative to the location of the pump station, which will affect how these challenges are addressed. The pump station can be built within the tunnel launch shaft or within its own dedicated shaft. This decision is driven by cost and schedule. Use of the tunnel launch shaft may provide owners cost saving opportunities by not having to construct a separate pump station shaft. However, this will likely extend the pump station construction as much as two years until the tunneling has been completed. Furthermore, delays to the tunneling operation would delay the pump station construction work, potentially leading to delay claims. For this reason, it has been more common to utilize a separate pump station shaft on recent CSO tunnel projects (Nasri et al. 2015)."
