There are compelling reasons for us to look to our Country's Western coal. Despite its inherent low BTU content, Western coal's low sulphur content provides a near-ideal answer to satisfy our in- dependent goals of clean air and self-sufficiency in energy. Vast reserves, thick seams and amenability to low-cost strip mining serve as a powerful economic basis for its viability as a primary and dependable source of energy for the coming decades. A major consideration, the solution of which may not be quite obvious, is transportation cost. These abundant deposits are remote from the utilities of the heavily populated eastern regions of the United States (Figure 1). A Western coal mine in Montana is likely 1500 miles or more from an eastern power plant. The comparable distance to an eastern coal mine may be only 200 miles. Thus, the question is: How can the haulage cost of our Western coal be substantially reduced to an acceptable level? If resolved, western reserves of coal will be one of the key solutions to satisfying our Nation's energy needs.

"This article details the use of an alternative testing method to the 2004 "Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) Recommendations for Prestressed Rock and Soil Anchors" manual’s recommendations for temporary and permanent rock anchors for applications in shafts and tunnels. This method was developed and used for the Black River Tunnel (BRT) project in Lorain, OH as a means to reduce testing time of rock bolts during shaft construction while maintaining a similar level of quality control and assurance. The following sections will detail the project background, subsurface characteristics, shaft construction, the 2004 PTI testing method and associated difficulties, the alternative testing method and conclusions reached.Project backgroundThe city of Lorain is located in north central Ohio on the south shore of Lake Erie, approximately 40 km (25 miles) west of Cleveland and 119 km (74 miles) east of Toledo. The city chose to build a large-diameter storage tunnel and pump station to meet its requirements to reduce sanitary sewer overflows to the nearby Black River. NTH Consultants Ltd. (NTH) was retained by the city’s prime consultant, Malcolm Pirnie Inc. (now the water division of Arcadis), to perform a geotechnical investigation, develop design and construction bid documents for the tunnel and shaft liner systems and ultimately provide oversight assistance during the construction phase of the project.The BRT is an approximately 1,700-m (5,560-ft) long, 7-m (23-ft) diameter rock tunnel to be lined with a 5.8-m (19-ft) inside diameter secondary concrete lining (Fig. 1). The tunnel is designed to accept flow at a new drop shaft (Shaft 3) located on the west side of the Black River, across from the city of Lorain Black River waste water treatment plant (BRWWTP). The tunnel will be dewatered at the south end by a large diameter pump station (Shaft 1) located in the existing Lorain Port Authority Public Boat Launch. Flow from the new pump station will be discharged into an existing shallow interceptor sewer and directed back to the BRWWTP."

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the stability of the mass flow rates and average pellet size in the different streams of an industrial-scale balling circuit. The variables in this study include water content, drum speed and fresh feed rate. It was found that both the mass flow rates and pellet diameter are greatly disturbed when a change, positive or negative, in any of the variables takes place. For most of these disturbances to be damped don, a period of one hour or so is required. When a disturbance in the feed rate was made, the transient period extended to more than one and half hours (the duration of the experiment). It was observed that there is an interaction between the drum speed and moisture needed for producing an acceptable green ball product. The moisture content of the product pellets was found to be a function of the pellet size, with the larger pellets retaining a higher moisture content.

"BACKGROUND In the event of an explosion or fire in an underground mine, workers can be exposed to a deficiency of oxygen, an excess of carbon monoxide, or both. These threats can occur as separate conditions or simultaneously. A lack of oxygen in the breathing air can only be addressed via the use of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) acting as a source of oxygen. An excess of carbon monoxide can also be addressed via the use of an SCBA, but if the threat occurs in isolation (that is, the atmosphere still contains sufficient oxygen to support life) and the concentration of the threat gas is not extreme (< 2%) then the carbon monoxide threat can also be addressed by the use of a filter self-rescuer (FSR). Used together, the SCBA and FSR offer a far more efficient and universally capable life support system than when used in isolation. However, the SCBA does not take advantage of the fact that the surrounding atmosphere likely contains some level of useable oxygen; i.e., the SCBA always supplies the total required oxygen from its limited supply, resulting in a ceiling on its useful life regardless of the level of oxygen in the surrounding air. To address this technology gap, what is needed is a ""smart"" SCBA that provides filtration and catalytic protection against threat gasses and has an extended duration life-sustaining oxygen inhale stream independent of the threat content and oxygen deficiency of the surrounding atmosphere. DEVELOPMENT Developed under contract with NIOSH the Smart Escape SCBA is comprised of three major components including; 1) oxygen supply, 2) oxygen sensing & dosing electronics and, 3) a CO catalyst and carbon bed broad spectrum FSR. The SCBA is designed as a hybrid system that provides non-toxic breathing air by using an approved Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear filter self-rescuer and a catalyst to convert high levels of carbon monoxide to harmless carbon dioxide (CBRN FSR/CO). In addition, the Oxygen Sensing & Dosing Electronics (OSDE) package adds sufficient oxygen to make up for deficiencies detected in the ambient air (Figure 1). By making use of the ambient oxygen, less oxygen is required for a one-hour unit life. This means that the Smart Escape SCBA fits in a smaller and lighter package than a similar-duration conventional Self-Contained Self-Rescuers (SCSR). Alternatively, taking advantage of available ambient oxygen could offer a significant increase in working duration in a unit with the same size as current SCSRs. The research performed under this NIOSH contract involved numerous tasks including: (1) definition of performance and system requirements for the Smart Escape SCBA, including keeping environmental stressors within acceptable ranges, providing at least one hour of breathable oxygen supply, and using a mask or hood that allows high-quality voice communication; (2) designing, building, and evaluating prototype units to support extensive bench top testing at Avon Protection and third party labs to demonstrate the device’s capabilities; (3) building sufficient quantity of Smart Escape SCBAs designed to be intrinsically safe (per MSHA criteria); (4) testing and evaluation by the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL)."

Twin-bore tunnels with a single track in each tunnel are currently the most common subway tunnel configuration. However, a large diameter single-bore tunnel with two tracks separated by a center wall could replace twin-bore tunnels and introduce potential benefits but require necessary modifications to the subway system. In particular, a nominal 40-foot-diameter single-bore tunnel can be considered in lieu of nominal 20-foot-diameter twin-bore tunnels. This paper discusses the benefits and modifications introduced by replacing twin-bore tunnels with a single-bore tunnel, with respect to various elements of the subway related to the tunnel, stations, track, and tunnel systems.

The study of the apatite deposits of the Aldan Shield shows wide spread of the Precambrian apatite-carbonate ores and possibilities of using them for extraction of apatite. Dependency of flotation on ore minerals was studied according to the following scheme: preparation of the monomineralic samples of anhydrite, gypsum, chlorite, serpentine, phlogopite, apatite; mixing them in apatite ore of the average composition; followed by flotation. Another series of the experiments was conducted to ascertain a dependence of flotation activity of the different minerals on the different flotation reagents, which were used as collectors. It has been shown that apatite from silicate-carbonate ores is most extractable because it has the biggest size of grains and is the most free of inclusions. Beneficiation of the sulphate-containing apatite-carbonate rocks is possible when flotol - 7.9 is used as a collector. Meanwhile, the use of the tallaktam leads to an increase in the sulphate recovery. The estimation of individual technological features of the layered Mghydrosilicates and their influence on the process of beneficiation has been examined using samples of apatite-dolomite ore (P205-8%) with the addition of the phlogopite, serpentine and chlorite. The results show that there is little influence of the chlorite presence on the flotation while the serpentine presence leads to a decrease of the flotation, because of its high specific surface area.

The demand and supply of wollastonite has gone through a dynamic period in the 1990&apos;s. A 10% -15% growth rate of demand stimulated interest in evaluating new projects. However, the mid-1990&apos;s brought declining prices for commodity applications and natural barriers to entry for technical applications, making many of these potential projects uneconomic. Successful projects that were brought to market were done so by incumbent producers. This work examines the competitive structure of the wollastonite market by evaluating the strategic decisions of the industry leader, NYCO Minerals Inc., and a new market entrant, Orleans Resources, in an attempt to identify the environmental threats and opportunities of this industry. Results suggest new entrants like Orleans Resources face significant entry barriers for technical applications, while NYCO Minerals could improve its profitability by having less exposure to commodity applications.

Laboratory column studies were conducted in order to assess the effectiveness of slag and red mud reactive barriers for cleaning up leachates generated at mining and waste disposal sites and loaded with copper and manganese. Solutions containing the metals of concern were prepared by dissolving the required quantities of CuSO4?5H2O and MnSO4?H2O in distilled water so that Cu concentration was 100 ppm and Mn 20 ppm. Flow rates of 25 mL.h-1 for Cu solution and 75 mL.h-1 for Mn solution were used in order to simulate aquifer water velocities of 1 ft/d and 3 ft/d respectively. Solutions were pumped upflow, in Plexiglas laboratory columns filled with each reactive medium, using peristaltic pumps. Measurements of middle and outflow column pH, redox potential, conductivity and elements concentration were performed to provide information regarding removal mechanisms for both elements and exhaustion/inactivation rates for each reactive medium. Both reactive media showed fairly good removal efficiency over the period studied. Copper was mainly removed by precipitation and formation of Cu(OH)2 while removal of manganese was due to precipitation of Mn(OH2).

A recent study by the New York Trap Rock Corporation has conclusively determined that the number of blasting complaints is directly related to the noise produced by the blast. In turn it has been known for some years that the noise produced by the blast is directly related to atmospheric structure of temperature, wind, and humidity in the vertical direction. Normally during daylight hours the temperature decreases with altitude at the rate of about five and one half degrees per thousand feet on a sunny day, and to somewhat lesser amounts on cloudy days. Consequently, sound travels slower with altitude because of the lower temperature, and the sound rays tend to bend skyward, and are soon dispersed in the atmosphere. Quite frequently, however, the temperature increases with altitude, and just the opposite effect is attained. That is sound rays are bent downward, and sometimes reach the ground with intensities approaching that at the source. When the temperature increases with altitude a temperature inversion is said to exist. Less frequently than these two atmospheric conditions a condition is observed where temperature remains constant with altitude. This is called an isothermal atmospheric condition, and sound passing through this type of atmosphere tends to travel in straight lines, neither bending upward nor downward. The sound will be greater than normal near the blast, but will dissipate rapidly with distance from the blast site with no zone or zones of silence.

INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently being constructed for the United States Department of Energy in SE New Mexico. The purpose of the project is to store low level transuranic waste in an underground environment which will ensure a safe atmosphere for the life of the stored waste. Ohbayashi was contracted by the DOE to sink two shafts and underground drift development which will be used to conduct a series of long term experiments in order to finalize the suitability of the geology and the environment for the transuranic waste storage. The two shafts sunk at the WIPP site were excavated around a borehole by conventional methods. The excavation around a borehole eliminates some of the established blind bottom sinking techniques, but creates unusual problems which must be pre-planned and scrutinized closely. An analysis of the slashing to the borehole technique will be given. WASTE SHAFT The waste shaft (w/s) is 5.8 meters (19 feet) in diameter and will be used primarily to transport the radioactive waste to the underground storage area. A pre-existing 1.83 meter (6 feet) diam borehole was taken to a depth of 655 meters (2150 feet) to the existing drift; at this level, a 38 meter (125 feet) sump was installed using blind bottom sinking techniques. Kennecott Copper Corporation and the U. S. Bureau of Mines cooperated in a full-scale slope stability research project at the Kimbley Pit near Ely, Nevada. The west wall of the Kimbley Pit was mined from an over-all slope angle of 45° to an over-all slope angle of 57° and the pit was deepened nearly 50 feet. Mining was begun February 10, 1966, and completed October 30, 1966. Approximately 2.55 million tons of ore and waste were mined. The project was designed and carried out to learn more about the behavior of a pit wall as its slope angle is steepened and to obtain a possible insight into engineering parameters for use in design of future slopes. Data from this project are presented as obtained from (1) instruments installed in two adits for deformation and displacement measurements, (2) a subsidence network installed on the surface above the steepened wall, (3) pre- and post-mining observations of stress in rock, (4) sonic-velocity measurements, and (5) seismic and microseismic investigations. Changes occurred in measured quantities as the slope was steepened but stopped when mining was completed. Agreement was noted between the measured changes and predicted changes obtained from calculations using the finite element technique. Subsidence surveys and microseismic studies show the steepened pit wall to be stable.

"INTRODUCTION The Jefferson Barracks Tunnel is in the final stages of design and is expected to go out to bid in the summer of 2016. The project is located in south St. Louis County along the west bank of the Mississippi River, about 13 km downstream of the St. Louis Gateway Arch. The project consists of a deep sanitary sewer tunnel, a deep pump station and several intakes. The intakes will divert sanitary flows into the tunnel and the tunnel will convey the flows by gravity to the Lemay No. 3 Pump Station, which will pump them up into the Lemay Waste Water Treatment Plant. The tunnel is about 5.4 km long and will be lined with 84-inch (2.1 m) fiberglass pipe. It drops at a gradient of 0.1 percent from south to north and will be bored through strong limestone using a hard-rock tunnel boring machine (TBM). The diameter of the TBM is anticipated to be about 3.4 m. The Owner’s original concept was for a relatively shallow tunnel so as to minimize construction and pumping costs. The preferred alignment ran close to the river, next to the existing force main, which was to be abandoned. Keeping the tunnel close to the force main would reduce the amount of shallow sewer work needed to connect the existing feeder sewers to the new tunnel. Several geotechnical investigations were performed, with shallowly focused geophysics and the borings all going exactly down the conceptual tunnel depth. Limestone bluffs run along the Missouri side of the river. These bluffs are pockmarked by sinkholes and riddled with karst. Large, well-known caves occur both north and south of the alignment. Karst features, including deep crevices and possible caves, were found in those early geotechnical investigations. Many of these features extended well below the level of the Mississippi River and would have been encountered by the tunnel. If a large crevice or cave were encountered, then the inflow of mud and water into the tunnel could have been large and possibly uncontrollable. Something had to be done to mitigate this situation. Pre-excavation grouting was considered, but the program would have been huge and extremely expensive. Using a closed-face TBM with bolted and gasketed lining was also considered, but that too was both risky and extremely expensive. The Owner could have abandoned the tunnel altogether and built a new force main, but that would have brought a whole new set of problems and was undesirable to the Owner. The last option was to move the tunnel away from the karst."

Tertiary calc-alkalic to alkalic rocks of the Little Rocky Mountains in north-central Montana host low-grade heap-leachable gold-silver deposits being mined by Pegasus Gold Corporation. Total production from 1884 through 1985 is estimated at 22,625 kilograms (727,414 ounces) of gold. This includes 10,774 kilograms (346,400 ounces) recovered by Pegasus between 1980 to 1986 from 20,318,000 tonnes (22,396,000 tons) of ore grading 0.960 grams of gold per tonne (0.028 ounces per ton). Silver production during this latter period was 24,556 kilograms (789,500 ounces), but reliable silver statistics prior to 1980 are not available. Ore reserves as of January 1, 1986, were estimated to be 35,380,800 tonnes (39,000,000 tons) grading 0.720 grams per tonne (0.021 ounces per ton). Present ore production is 5,533,920 tonnes (6,100,000 tons) per year at a 0.45 to 1 waste to ore strip ratio. Current annual metal production is about 2,644 and 5,288 kilograms of gold and silver respectively (85,000 and 170,000 ounces of gold and silver respectively). The Little Rockies were formed by a calc-alkalic to alkalic magma penetrating through the Precambrian basement into the overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. This intrusive center is Dart of the Central Montana Alkalic Province, a region comprised of twelve separate intrusive centers aligned in a northeast trending belt measuring 200 by 400 kilometers (124 x 248 miles). The ore deposits are structurally controlled epithermal systems which vary from deeper narrow veins to shallow, wide, low-grade stockworks, breccias and intensely fractured "sheeted" zones. The shallow types are now being exploited. Primary mineralization consists principally of gold and silver associated with pyrite, native gold and silver, sylvanite, calaverite, and hessite. Alteration is broadly classified as weak argillic. Pyritization, kaolinization, silicification and feldspathization are the dominant forms of alteration. Fluorite is a common hydrothermal gangue mineral.

The iron ores mined by LKAB in the north of Sweden have excellent beneficiation properties. This gives LKAB a favourable position as regards the production of low silica pellets for direct reduction. LKAB have concentrated on developing and marketing grades of pellets for the Midrex-Purofer-HyL process group, i.e. such D.R. processes which are carried out in a shaft furnace or a static bed using reformed natural gas as a reducing agent. The paper deals with properties and quality demands of iron ore pellets for such processes. Matters such as the effect of the residual magnetite in the fired pellets on the degree of metallization, the amount and composition of the slag phase in the pellets, the mechanism of the disintegration during reduction, the state of swelling of the pellets during the conditions prevailing in these processes, the importance of the porosity, the improvement of the reducibility and lowering of the sticking tendency of the pellets by small additions of suitable additives and the influence of the pellet size are discussed. A special test procedure for D.R. pellets has been elaborated by LKAB. Thus, three metallurgical properties are routinely determined separately, namely reducibility, reduction strength and sticking. The test methods are described. Finally the present and future LKAB pellets for direct reduction are presented with respect to chemical analyses and metallurgical properties.

The mining sector is one of the leading sectors where work accidents are most intense because of the constant change of work environment and heavy working conditions. The losses and the halt of production after the accident negatively affect productivity and production efficiency. It has been found that there are very few studies on the use of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), which is one of the nonparametric efficiency analysis methods, in the evaluation of mining sector occupational accidents. According to parametric activity measurement methods, it has been tried to show that the DEA can also offer the opportunity to interpret work accidents by taking advantage of its advantages. Due to the application of open-pit mining methods along with underground working techniques which increase the risk factors with respect to accidents at work that occurred between 2012 and 2018 of Western Lignite Corporation (WLC) were tried to be analyzed in the present work. As a result of the analytical work using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) for the years 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018, inefficiency has been determined in both underground and surface operations. According to the results obtained, it was determined that WLC could not produce enough production in both the underground and surface coal mining operation, despite the accidents that occurred, while it had the opportunity to produce more. In addition, it was found that the increase in accidents occurred more than the increase in the amount of production during the years studied.

Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.&apos;s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. All poten¬tials in this study are quoted in volts with respect to the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). This paper discusses the development of a SLAM II* simulation model with imbedded optimization modules designed M evaluate mineral exploration and exploitation strategies. The model traces through a sequential exploration program, evaluating each deposit site based upon geologic information and potential profitability of the site. At a specified time during the simulation, a new production plan is developed for currently producing deposits which takes into account the planning horizon and deposits which are currently being explored. Potential uses of the model by geologists, engineers, and management decision makers include setting corporate objectives and policies on exploration and production. The model is also useful for testing past decisions to evaluate decision making criteria and evaluating mineral deposit profit potential.

On June 25, 1876 Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer led the Seventh U.S. Cavalry Regiment., comprising 31 officers and 637 enlisted men, into the valley of the Little Big Horn River in southern Montana. His assigned mission was a reconnaissance-in- force to locate the Indians reported to be assemblying in that area. Custer was extremely successful in locating the Indians. Unfortunately he located more than 3000 Cheyenne and Sioux under the leadership of the great war chiefs Crazy Horse and Gall. Custer&apos;s entire battalion of more than 200 men was annihilated; there were no survivors. While I don&apos;t seriously suggest that things will be all that bad in the uranium industry, I do suggest that some very fundamental changes have occurred in the uranium market. Conventional thinking based on past truths will no longer suffice. Geology, economics, politics, nuclear growth pat terns, technology, and utility attitudes have all changed. Glass is one of man&apos;s most versatile creations. ---The earliest glaze known---is about 12,000 B.C. ---The oldest pure glass is a moulded amulet of about 7,000 B.C.---. Indicative of a knowledge of properly-proportioned, quality raw-material, means were found for producing the first relatively clear, transparent glass at about the beginning of the Christian era. The fundamentals of almost all the modern, technical processes of manufacture were established during the 3rd Century. (1) Glassmaking, practiced in Colonial America, was moved toward the Ohio Valley in response to increasing demands for fuel. This move, beginning in the 1860&apos;s resulted in the use of the glass sands contained in the Oriskany (and St. Peter) sandstone. (2) Glass sand,(3) virtually pure, fine-to-medium-grained quartz sand(4) is the principal raw material used in the manufacture of glass; it constitutes proportions which range to a maximum of about 72% and seldom is glass made without it. However, acceptable glass sands are, invariably, those which most nearly fit the glass-producer&apos;s economic needs and any method used to evaluate a raw material&apos;s potential must finally prove equatable with such needs. As used in the United States, source-rocks of glass sand include sandstone, unconsolidated silica sands, quartzites and vein-quartz. Admixtures of silica sand and other (principally clay and feldspar), readily separable components have been proven viable. However, the silica sand, refined by nature to a high degree of purity, is the desirable product of exploration. If the term, standard, is justified by long-continued use, the Oriskany - and St. Peter sandstones are, together, the nonesuch of the glass sand industry they provide the principal tonnage of melting sand. According to Grimsley,(5) Ottawa, Illinois, glass-sand is considered the standard glass-sand of the West and the analyses of Berkeley Springs sand (Oriskany) compare most favorably with this sand.
