Coal gasification solid residue (slag) contains unconverted carbon (char), which is considered an impurity for utilization applications of slag. Under this study, table concentration was used to process approximately 24,000 pounds of a nominal-3.4 mm gasifier slag (-85% ash) to separate high (-100%) ash slag from low (-50%) ash char. The results indicated a nearly ideal separation of the slag from the char for sizes coarser than about 1 mm. An overall slag yield of 71 % was obtained. The slag was sufficiently clean to be used as feed material for the production of expanded lightweight aggregate. The recovered char had an ash content of about 47% and was a nominal -1mm in size.

INTRODUCTION Cross, et al. (1974), produced a retrospective study of standard setting for underground miners. This report had two distinct components; i) criteria of importance for the protection of the miners, and ii) economic considerations for standard setting. The methods for setting radiation safety standards reviewed were: dose calculations and consensus methods; epidemiology; pathology; bioassay; animal experiments; sputum cytology; chromosome aberrations; and, the Mantel-Bryan Model. By looking back, the authors intended to enable officials to look ahead in making future decisions based on reasonable conclusions. Now it may be time to consider underground miners' protection from another perspective: are there miners who may be especially susceptible to toxic environments?; and if so, are there any biomedical assays that might be indicative of exceptional sensitivities to toxic substances? The human population is genetically very heterogeneous. The data of Saccomanno, et al. (1973), reveal great variability in individual response to radon daughter exposure and only a small portion of the miner population subject to toxic inhalants develop squamous cell metaplasia (Saccomanno, et al., 1970). The majority of the miner population is either not susceptible or is resistant to the toxic agents. This information suggests the existence of a small subpopulation with increased sensitivity or reduced resistance and underscores the need for indicators from biomedical assays that might prove of value for the detection of such individuals. The heightened awareness of the contribution of pollutants in the environment for the potential induction of mutations and carcinogenesis lead to a profusion of short-term bioassays to circumvent the high cost and time-consuming large toxicity animal studies. Over 100 bioassays across taxa from microbes to man are at various stages of use or development (Hollstein, et al., 1979). Less than a dozen tests currently offer early promise for application to[ in vivo] effect studies of man. Many are still in early development, lack the sensitivity needed for a retrospective or prospective study at current permissible exposures, are impractical to conduct in the field, or are not cost effective. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the bioassays that may now, or in the near term, prove applicable for the detection of individual underground miners with increased susceptibility to toxic agents. Throughout this statement, it is assumed that any single test may give false negatives or false positives and, therefore, a tier of tests should be investigated. The possible tests are in various stages of development; some tests better proven than others with a firmer data base and, therefore, with greater probability of usefulness. Some of the less proven assays are not ruled out if they have practical or theoretical promise as indicators. Table I summarizes the assays critiqued for their potential to monitor the effects of [in vivo] exposure to genotoxic substances. POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF HIGHLY SENSITIVE MINERS Assays of Body Fluids It is desirable to have data on the agent(s) to which subjects are exposed when humans are monitored by biomedical effects. Obviously, to varying intensity, the underground mining environments are monitored for radon daughters and it is recognized that the miners are also exposed to other pollutants, most notably, uranium ore dust and diesel fumes. Further testing for the metabolites of the pollutants can be done on body fluid, urine. [High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)]: This is a very sensitive method for the detection of mutagenic metabolites in urine. The urine is treated with the enzyme sulfatase and beta-glucuronidase to permit identification of substances that are made nonmutagenic by conjugation as glucuronides. The sample is then passed through an XAD-2 resin column and the absorbed organic molecules eluted with acetone. The sample is then split and evaporated to 1 ml and used for direct chemical analysis using HPLC. One drawback to the test is the inability to measure cumulative exposure, but multiple samples can be obtained and comparison to baseline (control) and exposure samples can reveal qualitative differences as a consequence of exposure to mutagens. [The Ames/Salmonella Microbiological Assay]: The Ames/Salmonella microbiological mutagen test is the most extensively used short-term bioassay, with over 2,600 chemicals having undergone testing by this method (Hollstein, et al., 1979). The method, thoroughly worked out and tested for 10 years, consists of taking the second split urine sample from the HPLC preparation, evaporating to dryness and dissolving in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Many longwall operators experience difficulty complying with the federal regulation limiting average dust exposure. Others are currently in compliance, but the dust exposure limit keeps then from increasing their production. Spray water is a major means of dust control. Excess water can cause problems in the transportation system and the cleaning plant, and reduces the Btu value of the run of mine coal. Thus, the dust exposure reduction per unit of water sprayed must be maximized. This paper discusses underground tests recently completed as part of a Bureau of Mines research program to determine the effects of variations in spray water flow rate, pressure, proportioning and spray orientation on longwall shearers.

In this paper, a geostatistical study of the North Butte roll type uranium deposit is presented. The geostatistical procedure applied takes into account the varying direction of the roll front for reserves calculations. For variogram calculation, the roll front is unfolded thereby allowing estimation of the variogram in directions parallel to and perpendicular to the roll front. Variograms calculated in unfolded space show strong directional anisotropies consistent with the anticipated configuration of the deposit.

Zeolites are common secondary components of a variety of igneous rocks. However it is extremely rare to reach such abundances to form a rock. An unusual rock composed almost entirely of natrolite, a zeolite mineral, has been discovered ; in a mountainous terrain called the Kop mountain range in the eastern Turkey. In the region, country rocks are essentially metamorphic rocks. These unique rocks are resulted through metasomatic changes acted on microdioritic and andesitic parent rocks occurring generally as dikes and stocks in the country rocks consisting chiefly of serpentinized harzburgites. These metasomatic rocks are investigated with respect to their mineralogical, petrographical, and geochemical characteristics. These products consisting dominantly of natrolite are termed "natrolitite" and those containing additional pargasite, an amphibol mineral, are termed "pargasite-bearing natrolitite or pargasitic natrolitite ". The dikes and stocks show concentric zoning, each of which has distinct chemical and mineralogical compositions: Na2O and H2O contents show enrichment outward from the core to chill zones whereas, SiO2 and CaO show depletion. Mineralogically, plagioclase variety, abundance and chemistry change outwards from the center due to partial to complete replacement of natrolite: anorthite contents of plagioclases decrease outward, which is indicated by A1203 and CaO decrease and SiO2 and Na2O increase, showing inverse relationship with increasing natrolite content.

At FHC Gold Company's Paradise Peak Mine gold and silver are produced. Precious metals recovery rates are very satisfactory along with the recovery and production of a relative high volume of mercury. At Paradise Peak precious metals are recovered via the Merrill-Crowe process and delivered to the refinery area as a mercury-bearing precipitate cake. The recovery of mercury is then obtained through a vacuum retort system. The balance of the material is mixed with fluxes and then melted and cast into dore' bars for shipping. Issues of retort capacity and concerns over efficiency led to research into the retort process itself.

All pigments and extenders or fillers whether organic or inorganic fall into the following broad general classes: I. Colored II.-White III. Black IV. Metallic A pigment- is any particulate matter that is essentially insoluble and chemically unaffected by the media into which it is dispersed. According to this very broad definition, colored pigments, white pigments, fillers, extenders, and functional pigments would all be included. The particulate size range would also be quite broad ranging from very fine colloidal particles (~0.01µ) to relatively coarse particles (~100.0µ). This broad definition is usually subdivided into more practical divisions which tend to relate the classification of the pigment to its primary function in the system in which it is used. Hence, the word extender implies that its major purpose may be to extend the system.

An innovative biological process is described for the treatment of cyanide-, metals- and nitrate-contaminated mine process water. The technology was tested for its ability to detoxify cyanide and nitrate and to immobilize metals in wastewater from agitation cyanide leaching. A pilot-scale demonstration is described in which a pilot plant was constructed to demonstrate the technology on a mine process-waste stream at a mine in Nevada. The demonstration was performed jointly under the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the US De¬partment of Energy's (DOE) Western Environmental Technology Office (WETO) under Interagency Agree¬ment Number DW89938513-01-0. The Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) demonstration program was also involved in the project. MSE Technology Applications Inc. (MSE), Butte, MT, was the contractor responsible for conducting the project, and Pintail Systems Inc., Aurora, CO, was the technology provider. The pilot-scale unit was field-tested at Echo Bay's McCoy/Cove Mine southwest of Battle Mountain, NV. The biotreatment process was considered successful in destroying cyanide in the mine process water. The process was also determined to be effective in removing metals. The pH was consistently neutralized and nitrates were successfully removed from the mine process water. From the results of these pilot-scale tests, it was concluded that the biotreatment process potentially of¬fers an innovative, cost-effective alternative for the treatment of mining wastewaters.

The high tension process which separates materials based on relative differences in surface conductivity has been very successful in recovering non-ferrous metals from municipal waste. Aluminum is by far the largest constitutent of the total non-ferrous metal fraction; accounting for >95% in most localities. Wire and insulation mixtures from industrial wastes have been treated commercially for several years by a high tension process initially developed for use in the iron ore industry. The wire and insulation application was a forerunner of municipal waste dry treatment technology. In the past eighteen months the rotating-drum-type electrostatic separator has undergone extensive testing and development in order that the process might be efficiently adapted to the recovery of aluminum from municipal waste.

"Performing risk analyses on tunnel projects has become common place and on many projects it is required from an owner or regulatory perspective. After the project is planned, designed and constructed, the data concerning identified risks, assumptions, costs, probabilities and mitigations is generally long forgotten and buried in some file somewhere. A study was performed comparing predicted risks versus actual events on four recently constructed rock tunnel projects in New York, Ohio, Georgia and California. Probabilities and costs for selectively common risks on tunnel projects have been studied and re-evaluated. Conclusions are presented that can guide future projects and the veracity of the tunnel risk analyses performed. INTRODUCTION Tunneling is a risky business. More than ever, attention is being paid to the risks associated with tunneled facilities and implications on project or program cost and schedule. Questions about why tunneling projects notoriously exceed budget numbers abound. Evaluations in retrospect and going forward have focused on the wide breadth of inherent risks associated with tunneling. More and more, these risks are being identified, studied and managed to a higher degree. As more and more scrutiny pervades the industry, little value is being obtained and leveraged on future projects. The industry seems to be headed in a direction of making the same mistakes over and over. The notion of risk evaluation has been around for decades and received wide notoriety with the U.S. Space Program and ambitious projects in the energy industry such as hydropower and nuclear power in the 1960s and 1970s (Stewart and Melcher, 1997). This led to the evolution of tunnel risk analyses with more rigorous identification of the unique risks in tunneling projects impacting cost and schedule. As tunneling risks became more readily identified, more attention has been paid to the frequency and impact of the occurrences unique to tunneling (ITIG, 2012). Currently, few tunnel projects are being planned, designed or constructed without a formal risk register that identifies the risks, mitigates the risks and quantifies the probable impacts of risks that cannot be mitigated. In hind sight on many recent projects, events that brought projects to “its knees” were not addressed in risk assessments or were not dealt with to adequately mitigate the risk of these events."

The use of tank cells over the years has provided a means for low cost, space efficient, extra capacity in existing flotation circuits. In some cases, new plants have selected tank cells as the machine of choice. Typical tank cells use high efficiency impellers for mixing, which results in low power draw. Unfortunately, these mixers have poor aerating characteristics that compromise metallurgical performance. This has all changed with Outokumpu's new flotation concepts. Outokumpu has recently developed the HG or High Grade flotation cell that can provide higher recovery with better selectivity while maintaining the simple operation of conventional cells.

Understanding the effects of various ventilation and climatic parameters on the work conditions and comfort in underground mines is critical for efficient ventilation system design and cost savings and to ensure the health and safety of mine workers. To understand the effects that the thermal damping effect (TDE) and the thermal flywheel effect (TFE) have on the ventilation system design and potential cooling system, this paper compares and analyzes the wet and dry-bulb temperatures at the bottom of an intake shaft using two modeling software packages, Ventsim™ and Climsim™. The comparison shows the consequences and importance of taking into account the TDE/TFE when predicting the climatic conditions in future underground mines, especially when deciding on whether a cooling system should be employed in order to provide adequate climatic conditions in the production stopes, dead-end development headings, and throughout the mine. Ventsim™is able to account for the TFE, while Climsim™does not. Both software packages have their uses and are used within the mining industry, but it is useful to understand their limitations and where the future of underground climatic modeling will lead.

A procedure is presented for ranking hazardous waste sites for remedial decisions, and an example with application to mining waste sites is discussed. Typical contaminant concentrations are calculated from field data. Exposure indices that compare these measured concentrations with allowable limits are then computed. The limits are selected to protect both the health of humans (for both carcinogen and noncarcinogen effects) and the health of key organisms in the ecological food web. The additive exposure index for a site, defined as the sum of all contaminant-specific exposure indices, is then used in ranking the sites and assigning each a priority for remedial action. One key source of uncertainty in the process is the estimation of a typical site concentration from data that include values reported as "below certified reporting limit" (BCRL). This uncertainty is compounded in the additive exposure index and therefore may have a substantial effect on the assignment of remediation priority. A general approach is presented for incorporating consideration of BCRL data into uncertainty evaluation when assigning remediation priority designators to hazardous waste sites.

Understanding ore variability is a key factor in the geometallurgical analysis of a deposit and is beneficial to process development and mine planning. Ore variability is a function of the mineralogy of a deposit, in terms of both ore and gangue minerals and their textural relationships. This study integrates optical microscopy and quantitative mineral analysis to characterize the mineralogy and texture from 13 samples from different lithologic units at the Bingham Canyon Mine. The analysis identified several parameters, such as modal mineralogy, alteration assemblages, distribution of mineral phases and alteration assemblages and microfracture and void space distribution. These parameters can have an impact on the materials’ behavior during processing. This study demonstrates that quantitative mineralogical analysis can provide detailed information for improved understanding of ore variability.

The gas producer actually dates back far beyond the period from which we first find recorded data. A partial production of producer gas can take place in any type of solid fuel grate equipment, such as a boiler, or even a fireplace if a sufficiently deep fuel bed is provided. Those of us who have watched a coal fire burning in the hearth, have no doubt noticed at times, the gases liberated by the heat burning on or near the surface of the fuel bed. So far as we know, the first gas producer was built by Bischof in Germany in 1839, followed by Ebelman in France in 1840, and Ekman of Sweden in 1845. The first large industrial development in the use of gas producers was When the two Siemens brothers of Germany patented their first combined gas producer and regenerative furnace in 1861, thus opening up the field for the use of raw, crude producer gas in heavy furnace work. In the years 1879-1881 J, E, Dowson, of England developed a producer gas cooling and cleaning plant, which extended the scope of application of producer gas to make possible its use in small furnaces and gas engines.

Coal handling facilities, such as utility plants, coal terminals, ports, manufacturing, processing, etc. Protect themselves against interruptions in coal receipts by maintaining a 60 to 90 day supply in storage. Not too long ago, these storage piles were referred in terms of hundreds or thousands of tons. Today, it is not unusual to have hundreds of thousands or millions of tons in storage. Burn, or shipping and receiving, rates have increased dramatically and storage piles have grown in horizontal as well as vertical dimensions. Fixed systems for delivering and retrieving coal from storage have increased in length and operating capacity and have become highly sophisticated in their operation. With few exceptions, mobile material handling equipment is used to handle all coal beyond the reach of these systems. These machines take excess loose coal from the fixed system to the storage area, place it on the storage pile, compact it, maintain the pile, protect against spontaneous combustion, the spread of fires if they occur, and return the coal to the reclaim system as required, plus many of the small chores around the facility.

Corrosion has long been identified as a potential risk to the long-term ground support stability due to degradation of internal ground support elements such as rock bolts but also to surface support from mesh, straps, bolt plates, and ancillary support of utilities such as hangers. The emphasis is to understand the corrosion mechanisms on the primary ground support elements and any supplemental steel or arch sets. The water and chemical processes from oxidation(rust), stress corrosion cracking, and even the electrical charge created during these reactions contribute to the corrosion of the steel support elements. The main goals are to mitigate the effects of corrosion and to be able to predict those areas of high water or high sulphide for potential rehab maps. It is also essential to identify and classify the visible corrosion as part of damage mapping and provide bolt testing to those areas of suspected internal damage from corrosion. This is important to get an estimate of the support longevity or expected life before rehab to minimize the overall cost of the operation.

Research investigations on the chemistry of the adsorption of gold cyanide on activated carbon have mostly reduced the role of activated carbon as the provider of the large surface area needed for adsorption. Most do not go beyond suggesting that oxygen functional groups on carbon play a key role in the adsorption process. Our research shows that the nature of the material, specifically its structure, is a crucial factor in the adsorption equation. To delineate the effect of adsorbent properties, gold cyanide was adsorbed on a series of carbonaceous adsorbents, including lignite, coals, anthracites, carbon blacks, graphite and activated carbon, which covers wide variations of composition, surface acid group content, and degree of graphitization. The results show that the adsorption of gold cyanide per unit area of adsorbent is not related to the amount of oxygen groups on the surface or even the total oxygen content of the material. However, they show very strong correlation with the degree of graphitization of the adsorbent, which indicates that the graphitic plates of activated carbon play the most important role. The findings suggest that majority of the adsorption occurs on the plate faces of the graphite crystallites of activated carbon.
