Controlling long overland conveyors with multiple drive stations is a complex problem. The methods for controlling these belts in a steady state are well-covered in existing literature, but a discussion of starting and stopping strategies is absent. This paper outlines different control strategies for starting, stopping and running conveyors with multiple drive stations. To illustrate the benefits of applying the methods described in this paper, the authors show how their adoption corrected many of the control system problems at Essroc Cement’s overland conveyor, which features three drive stations separated from each other by long lengths of continuous conveyor belt.

Exploration for sandstone-type uranium ore bodies which will be exploited using underground mining techniques is usually executed in sequential fashion. Geostatistical methods can be used at the earliest exploration stages to design drilling programs which have a high probability of success in the location and delineation of mineable ore-grade mineralization, should such mineralization exist. In succeeding development stages, geostatistics may be used to outline and define the potential grade of reserves and to apply confidence limits on the grade estimation. Delineation of mineable reserves for mine planning requires extensive development drilling; using such drilling data geostatistical methods may be used to minimize the drilling needed to achieve a desired level of confidence in the calculation of mineable uranium ore grade and tonnage. Because sandstone-type uranium deposits tend to be pod-shaped and are generally aligned along a mineralized trend, this paper proposes a geostatistical method of calculating uranium ore reserves which accounts for this fact and predicts the area within a trend which is underlain by ore. This method uses an indicator value; that is, drill holes which contain mineable ore-grade intercepts are coded as 1, those that do not are coded 0. The indicator may be kriged over the mineralized trend to obtain an estimate of the area underlain by ore. The thickness and grade-thickness may be kriged, and the average ore grade may then be obtained by dividing grade-thickness by thickness, as is conventional for stratabound deposits. The mean grade is then multiplied by the kriged mean thickness to obtain an estimate of the volume, and thence tonnage, of mineable ore within the trend.

Magnesite has the unique combination of properties that make it useful in a wide variety of metallurgical applications. The use of refractory magnesite has been increasing throughout the world, but the source of the "ore" differs. The United States has increased production of synthetic magnesites while the rest of the world is exploiting its resources, using natural magnesites. The history and methods of manufacturing synthetic magnesite are discussed as well as the practices for beneficiating natural magnesite. The properties, costs, and uses of the two types of magnesite are discussed and compared.

"In December 2011, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, the U.S. Department of Justice, Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) and Alpha Appalachia Holdings entered into a nonprosecution agreement related to the explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine (UBB) that killed 29 miners. This coal operation was owned by Performance Coal Co., an affiliate of Massey Energy Co., which was acquired by ANR in June 2011, more than a year after the UBB explosion. Pursuant to the agreement, ANR agreed to:• Establish a trust within 120 days.• Pay a total of US$48 million into the trust to be used solely to fund and administer research and development (R&D) projects to improve mine health and safety.• Administer the trust by three highly qualified individuals with academic and/or professional backgrounds in mine health and safety.In April 2012, the Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mine Safety and Health was created. The three directors - Michael Karmis, president; David Wegman, vice presidenttreasurer, and Keith Heasley, vice presidentsecretary - approved a plan to expend both the interest and principal of the trust, aiming at an 8-10 year research horizon. The foundation also appointed David Belden, an experienced manager of nonprofits and professional associations, as the first executive director of the foundation. The IRS approved the foundation’s tax-exempt application, as described in Section 501c(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, on Dec. 18, 2012. The board established guiding principles of the foundation, which are as follows:• Mission: to improve mine health and safety through funding R&D projects to qualified academic institutions and other not-for-profit organizations.• Vision: to enable miners in the future to be free of work related injury or disease by the implementation of the results of the projects funded by the foundation and undertaken by the best researchers from any discipline that can contribute. The foundation is now approaching its third year and regularly posts updates, including semi-annual reports, to its website (www.http.alpha-foundation.org/), which serves as the main medium for communication with the broader stakeholder community"

Data collected from several different fundamental surface chemical techniques were compared to study the interfacial interactions in the dodecylaminelmica flotation system. In the present study, the method used was the microinterferometric free foam film technique of Scheludko (1967) in which the stability, thickness and interfacial potentials at the air/dodecylamine solution interface were determined. These results were compared to previously published data, obtained from surface force measurements (Rutland et al. 1992), in which the interaction and hydrophobic adhesion (pull-off force) between molecularly smooth mica sheets in the amine solution had been reported. Also equilibrium contact angle measurements were used for comparison. The data was collected over a range of pH values and related to the batch flotation response of mica in dodecylamine solution. It was found that maximum flotation occurred at pH 8, but this did not correlate with the minimum in double layer interaction potential. However, it appeared to correspond with a tightly packed collector monolayer giving maximum hydrophobicity to the mica surface. Finally, from the extended DLVO theory, it was shown that heterocoagulation between the bubble and the mica could only occur, providing there was a very long range hydrophobic interaction force to counterbalance the repulsive van der Waals and electrostatic forces.

In the late 1980s and into the 1990s, the Mountain Pass Mine in California produced about 40 percent of the world?s rare earth elements. At the height of this production, the facility produced up to 54 L/s (850 gpm) of saltwater that was piped to offshore holding ponds where the water was evaporated. In 1998, following a series of waste water pipeline breaches, separations activities were suspended, reducing the Mountain Pass site to just the openpit mine and mill. The environmental concerns were addressed and the affected areas have since been remediated. However, in the years following the breaches, 97 percent of the world?s production of rare earth elements moved to China. By 2011, Molycorp, and the Mountain Pass Mine, had rebounded from the difficult times and were once again in a position to become a significant player in the rare earth industry.

"The majority of tunnels for civil engineering applications are now being constructed using some form of mechanical excavation. Beginning in the 1960s with rock tunnel boring machines (TBM), the tunneling industry has introduced both earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry pressure balance (SPB) soil machines; mixed soil and rock machines and a variety of different mechanical devices for the construction of small diameter tunnels. Over time, these machines have become more powerful and more adaptable to a wider variety of ground conditions; so much so that tunnels are now being constructed in ground conditions and in the vicinity of third-party impacts that would have been considered beyond the state of the art just 10 years ago. Figure 1 is an example of a mixed ground crossover TBM used successfully at Mexico City’s Túnel Emisor Poniente II.All of the above is highly advantageous for the tunneling industry, but it has also placed a much higher level of risk on the performance characteristics of the tunneling machines, on the contractors operating those TBMs and on the manufacturers of those machines. Most of the risks for a tunneling project are associated with creating the space inside of which the finished facility will be constructed. In order to create that space, the tunnel contractor must make many decisions about the best way to excavate the ground, the best way to control the ground at the face of excavation and the preferred method for supporting the ground around the tunnel in a manner that is safe for the workers and stable with respect to all of the overlying and adjacent existing structures. If it is proposed to use some form of TBM in order to build the tunnel, then the TBM becomes central to all three of these activities and becomes an integral part of managing the risks associated with these activities."

Quantitative hydrogeologic characterization of fractured rock is challenging because fracture systems are convoluted and difficult to characterize discretely. For large-scale water resource impact analyses, it may be more appropriate to use a watershed water balance approach and analyze fractured systems in terms of “bulk” hydraulic parameters over a large enough scale (hundreds of meters), so that the fractured media may be evaluated as “equivalent” porous media [1]. This is a common investigative methodology for mountain watersheds in fractured bedrock terrain because it does not rely on discrete flow paths but instead evaluates inputs to (recharge) and outputs from (discharge) the ground-water system [2,3]. This paper describes the use of this methodology to perform a practical and cost-effective hydrogeologic characterization and mining impact analysis for a proposed granite quarry in a mountain watershed. The key conclusions of the study guided the mine planning that was designed to minimize impacts to the fractured granite hydrogeologic system and preserve recharge to downgradient sedimentary aquifers.

A number of relatively recent factors associated with the design of new metallurgical processing plants have made the effective training of operators a requirement for a successful start-up. Some of these factors include large capital investment in a minimum of processing lines, highly complex process control systems, and stringent regulations on plant effluent, to name a few. More than ever, operating mistakes during the start-up phase can lead to substantial delays in achieving design production, as well as problems with government authorities if permit limits are exceeded. The only way to assure your return on plant investment is to ensure new plant operators have the knowledge to properly run the plant from the outset. A comprehensive set of operating manuals specifically targeted for plant operators and foreman, written by experienced operating personnel, is the only effective way to provide the necessary information for start-up-related training.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu co-deposited. Decreasing Cu co-deposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A?h per 150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 ms. Graphite, lead, and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave e1ectrowinning at 70? C gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10 to 30 pct, and a period of 100 ms to 1,000 ms gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µ g/mL to 0.1 µ g/mL, Au concentrations decreased from 54 µ g/mL to 0.2 µ g/mL, and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µ g/mL.

This study explores implementing a machine learningbased system to generate a 3D surface repre- sentation of the roof and support straps in the mine. Event cameras have been chosen for their performance in high-dynamic-range lighting conditions and for their low latency. To enable automated drilling and bolting, 3D vision using eventbased cameras has been developed. A ground-truth set is created using two, time-synced event cameras and a LiDAR camera. These sensors are used to construct a ground-truth dataset of corresponding event- camera images and surface maps from the LiDAR. The network is tested with stereopairs of event images and produces a depth image with ±5 mm RMS error on average across 1000 test images.

The adsorption behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions on to activated carbon has been studied. The gold loading capacity of the activated carbon used in the system and the recovery efficiency by the adsorption were examined. The parameters affecting the adsorption of gold on to activated carbon included temperature, agitation speed, concentration of 'cation and anion as well as that of ammonia. It was found that the maximum gold loading on activated carbon used was about 10 kg of gold per ton of carbon. The recovery of gold by the adsorption from ammoniacal solutions was dependent upon the initial gold concentration in the solution. A recovery of 98% of gold was obtained on to the activated carbon under experimental conditions after 120 hour adsorption. It was also found that the initial adsorption rate was relatively fast compared to the whole period of the adsorption. The apparent activation energy for the adsorption was measured to be 15.8 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of gold adsorption on activated carbon was controlled by pore diffusion.

Designing an underground nuclear waste repository is a complex process. Although many decisions are involved before the design is complete, the first three--what the target horizon is, what the underground boundary is, and where the entry point will be located--are important because they establish the basis for the entire repository design. Even more important than these decisions, however, is the data on which the decisions are based. Because the current data are limited, an aggressive data gathering program is needed during the next design phase to augment information about the intricate interplay among all facets of the repository design and the geologic medium in which the proposed repository is to be developed. Although unique to modern engineering enterprises, the challenges involved in designing a repository in the unsaturated zone are within current technology and engineering practices.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the application of thermal fragmentation in Australian hard-rock, underground, narrow-vein mining. Two geologically similar samples from an underground, narrow-vein, hard-rock gold mine were collected to obtain a measure of the technology’s ability to recover ore by the creation of large thermal openings to assess the applicability of the thermal method.

Abstract. Dynamic experiments were performed in a continuous open-circuit 40x40 cm ball mill using a pseudo-random binary sequence of the feed rate and measuring the variations of the discharge particle-size distribution. The impulse response is calculated by a cross-correlation technique. Then a model involving a discrete transfer function and a time-series stochastic equation is calibrated using maximum likelihood methods. Based on this empirical model. a minimum variance controller with constrained input is designed and its performances are compared. by simulation, to the performances of a conventional PID regulator.

Good afternoon gentlemen. It is always a pleasure to talk about a subject dear to our hearts--the high speed transfer of bull; materials. Specifically, today we will be reviewing the engineering approach to an age old problem of ship loading and unloading. You may be puzzled by the title of this paper and we will attempt to explain this for you--particularly the use of the words "New Era", since high speed automated facilities are nothing new to the material handling engineer. The new era in material handling designs refers to an all out concerted effort to provide custom engineering tailored to specific operations and economic requirements of the client. It shuns hardware type of engineering wherein existing machines and devices are dusted off and reapplied. It provides automation when automation can be justified and it exemplifies the application of systems engineering to solve specific problems.

"...Unfortunately, the research activities in soil mechanics had one undesirable psychological effect. They diverted the attention of many investigators and teachers from the manifold limitations imposed by nature on the application of mathematics to problems in earthwork engineering. As a consequence, more and more emphasis has been placed on refinements in sampling and testing and on those very few problems that can be solved with accuracy. Yet accurate solutions can be obtained only if the soil strata are practically homogeneous and continuous...." This statement about soil mechanics was made by Karl Terzaghi, thirty years ago and applies to a greater degree today to the infant science of rock mechanics. More uncontrolled variables are added to the already many existing in soil mechanics. Variables, such as Macro-discontinuity and in situ stress levels. In no other field of engineering are the problems as site oriented. Presently this site dependance demands the investigator or rock mechanics engineer to get his hands dirty rooting in the muck of a tunnel floor trying to properly install or readout test apparatus in a comprehensive site investigation. This paper discusses such a site investigation designed to determine the problems and solutions inherent in the driving of the Trans Koolau Tunnel. The paper will describe the various types of tests to be performed, how the results are to be used and the interrelation of the various tests themselves.

INTRODUCTION Rapidly increasing capacities of equipment used to load and handle material at the face require improved haulage equipment and better methods of transporting the mined materials or "muck" to the shaft or slope and out of the mine to the processing plant on the surface. Increasingly, those transportation demands are being satisfied with underground belt conveyors. Such con¬veyors provide the most readily available, most efficient, and most reliable method of carrying materials in a continuous and rapid flow from the face loading equip¬ment to the surface plant. Almost universally, belt con¬veyors are used in coal mines and those nonmetallic and metallic mines operating in relatively flat bedded deposits. Belt conveyors are available in a wide range of capacities, mainly limited by belt width, belt speed, and weight of the material to be transported. They can be used on the level, on grades, on the surface, or under¬ground. They provide a rapid and constant flow of material, transporting the material as quickly as it is mined. Length of belt conveyors is almost unlimited. Where the haulage distance exceeds the practical capacity of a single conveyor unit, two or more conveyors can be used in series. Single conveyors more than 1.6 km (1.0 mile) long are common; multiple-unit conveyors in series operation are transporting materials over distances exceeding 16.1 km (10 miles). Depending upon mate¬rials being transported, job conditions, cost of the terrain being spanned, and alternative haulage methods avail¬able, conveyors can be conceivably economical for even greater distances. Table 1 lists maximum belt speeds recommended for most materials, relating belt speeds to belt widths. Table 2 lists capacities of typical conveyors of various widths and speeds, transporting commonly mined mate¬rials of various weights. ADVANTAGES OF CONVEYOR SYSTEMS For several years after their initial introduction, belt conveyors were available only with rigid side frames or a supporting structure of steel and concrete. That con¬struction limited underground applications, due to the cost and relative inconvenience of extending or retract¬ing the belt conveyor in the confined underground environment. However, during the last 20 years, wire-¬rope side-frame belt conveyors, as shown in Fig. 1, have become widely used in underground applications. Even wider use can be anticipated with their application to the fast movement of materials in surface mining operations. Advantages of the wire-rope side-frame belt con¬veyors were realized first in panel or section belt haulage in coal mines. Soon afterward, use of those conveyors was extended to gathering and main-line haulage. The mobility of the wire-rope side-frame conveyor is the principal reason for its success. The conveyor can be extended, retracted, dismantled, moved, and reassembled easily, even in relatively confined under¬ground spaces. The intermediate structure consists of rope support stands, wire-rope side frames, wire-rope tie-off stands, and the necessary carrying idlers and return idlers. An important and very attractive feature is the ability to suspend the conveyor from the roof in an underground mine, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving more room for improved housekeeping and allowing passage of face-service equipment, haulage vehicles, and other mining equipment. The conveyor's open construction allows quick and easy visual inspection of its com¬ponents for failures or malfunctions; it also facilitates checking and correcting conveyor-belt alignment. Other advantages contributing to the attractiveness and widespread application of wire-rope side-frame conveyors in main-line, slope, and surface installations include: lower capital costs, lower installation costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced impact on idlers and belting, reduced spillage and minimal cleanup, improved conformation to undulating terrain or mine bottoms, and the ability to span most obstacles without heavy structural support. CONVEYOR CLASSIFICATIONS Underground belt conveyors are classified normally according to their function. Generally, conveyors are classified into one of four main categories: 1) Panel or section conveyors normally receive the material to be transported directly from the face-haulage equipment. 2) Gathering conveyors are secondary haulage units that usually receive material from two or more panel conveyors. 3) Main-line conveyors transport all the material mined in the underground operations to the slope or shaft. Normally, they receive the material from two or more gathering conveyors. 4) Slope conveyors generally operate in tandem with the main-line conveyor, providing continuous Table 1. During April 1967 a Frasch sulfur mine was placed in operation near Fort Stockton, Pecos County, in West Texas. This was the first Frasch mine to recover native sulfur from a deposit not associated with the caprock of a salt dome. Since 1967 two additional mines have been opened in west Texas, another one near the first at Fort Stockton and a third one near Orla in Culberson County (Figure 2). Recoverable reserves at the Culberson County mine are estimated to be 57,000,000 long tons of native sulfur (Zimmerman and Thomas, 1969). Total recoverable reserves at the three mines probably exceed 60,000,000 long tons, Studies of the geochemical cycle of native sulfur mineralization in test Texas indicate an origin similar to the deposits on salt domes although the geologic framework is different. A comparison of the geologic setting of the west Texas deposits with the deposits in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as reported in the literature, reveals many similarities.
