The paper gives a short resumé of the findings of the joint US - Swedish "Mechanical Boring (MB) or Drill and Blast Tunneling (DB) ? Workshop" in Stockholm December 1976. New developments and trends in both MB and DB techniques in Europe since 1976 are described, and information is given on some interesting new projects. Differences in contracting principles between the US and Europe lead to different practices for preinvestigations, design, excavation and arbitration and legal affairs. It is shown that this often leads to a higher cost in the US than in Europe for similar excavation jobs. A typical US tunnel job also has more men on the site than a similar job in Europe. This adds to the cost difference and is only partly balanced by a slightly higher rate of excavation in the US. A comparison is made between two quantitative methods of predicting MB penetration rates. These are in reasonable agreement. A probable future development in machine design is an increase in cutter load towards perhaps 25 tons per disc where the tunnel diameter is large enough to house the machine size dictated by the size of the very large electric motors required. Recent European developments in drill and blast technique include improved methods for cautious blasting, precision hydraulic drilling of small diameter holes, and non-electric interval blasting techniques. These developments still keep the drill and blast method ahead of mechanical boring costwise for tunnels in igneous rock whereas for most sedimentary materials mechanical boring has a lead, particularly for long tunnels.

The role of pre-conditioning in a caving operation has multiple benefits, ranging from assisting with improved caveability, normalising fragmentation and improving draw point hang-up frequency. At Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Operations, both the Ridgeway Deeps block cave the Cadia East Panel Cave have utilised pre-conditioning using hydraulic fracturing. Seismic response data inside and outside the pre-conditioned volume show the benefit of treating the full caving block. Cadia East has further developed pre-conditioning to mitigate developing seismic hazards associated with major structures (fault-slip events) and managing mine-wide seismic hazards in new caving operations where the potential for large damaging seismic events exists due to high stresses and hard competent rockmasses. A case study reviewing the impact of pre-conditioning to mitigate seismic hazard associated with fault slip is presented. Cadia East operation undertook a targeted hydraulic fracturing program and reduced the overall number of large events as an example of the benefits of pre-conditioning. This paper will review the application of Hydraulic Fracturing at Cadia and discuss the geotechnical and seismological parameters of seismic events that occur within and outside of pre-conditioned rockmass volumes to demonstrate the benefits that Hydraulic Fracturing bring to future caving operations.

The pressure/vacuum lysimeter is being used as an effective vadose zone monitoring device for mining heap leach facilities, tailing disposal ponds and tailing waste sites. Their use has proven reliable for baseline data collection, early warning leakage detection and analyzing geochemical variations in the vadose zone. The lysimeter structure utilizes a closed cylindrical chamber made of PVC or inert material. The soil water intake portion of the cylinder is made of a porous material of low permeability. The application of vacuum or pressure to the unit is via two access tubes from the ground surface. Available soil moisture is drawn by vacuum through porous material into the lysimeter chamber and then collected from the access tubes. Case studies show their usefulness for monitoring around a uranium tailing pond constructed in glacial till material, under heap leach pads and pregnant, barren, and overflow ponds, and investigating the movement of contaminant moisture through old tailing deposits. Relatively easy to install and sample, regulatory agencies and facility operators are accepting and negotiating for their application as a site integrity monitoring device and unsaturated zone research tool. Their use at heap leach facilities lends credibility to solution balance calculations when considering a leachate loss of 5 or 10 percent can make or break a mine's profitability.

According to the Markowitz portfolio theory the value of a diversified portfolio is higher than the sum of the parts of a portfolio, which is an important consideration for the correct valuation. This is valid for real estate portfolios as well as for mining assets (or enterprises). This paper analyses the application of the portfolio theory to a diversified portfolio of assets in the real estate industry and draws conclusions on further research work to be done in the minerals industry. The volume of real estate transactions is increasing over recent years. As such, the nature of those transactions is constantly changing and in some cases portfolios become more heterogeneous as they are composed of different property categories, e.g. locations and types of use. This makes their economic evaluation more difficult. This paper focuses on the acquisition of a fairly heterogeneous real estate property portfolio purchased by “Commerz Real” in Germany in Q4 2019. For economic evaluation the widely used Markowitz portfolio theory (Markowitz, 1952) was applied. It was investigated whether diversification effects could achieve added value in the form of a reduction in risk compared to the sum of their individual components. As a result the findings of this research could be applied to other heterogeneous real estate transactions and even to mine property portfolio or PPP1 project portfolio transactions.

The use of conventional tailings deposition methods has been the standard for decades. With the need to reduce the impact of mining, alternative methods are considered when expanding or upgrading tailings handling systems. Converting an existing tailings management system to a more sustainable deposition method during the operation of a mine may incur considerable operational and financial risk, and when assessed more traditionally, does not provide significant advantages. As a result, most mines choose to continue their current technology and add an additional pumping stage or pumpstation to their tailings line in case of a pipeline extension or Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) expansion. This also often involves raising embankments. Changing pumping technology is traditionally assessed by comparing the energy efficiency of current and prospective pumping technology. Despite a reduction in absorbed power, this traditional assessment does not include possible savings in water and the carbon footprint. With the consideration of all these three aspects, alternative pump technologies, such as Positive Displacement (PD) technology, become more economically feasible, providing increased sustainability and enable a site to future-proof their operations. Project feasibility may be affected by the high capital investment required for PD pumps. The benefit of applying PD pumping technology could be enhanced by reducing the volumetric throughput of the pipeline by dewatering the tailings to 65% solids concentration by weight. It was found that despite increasing capital expenditure, the improved reclamation of water will have a positive effect on the direct and indirect cost of fresh water intake to mine operations. This paper seeks to illustrate that in many applications the long-term benefits of investing in sustainable tailings management are optimized when more efficient PD pumping technology is combined with tailings dewatering when upgrading or expanding the tailings handling system.

Pyrite is one of the most common sulfide minerals on earth, which is usually grown with chalcopyrite and other sulfide minerals. In flotation practice, pyrite from different mines or different sections in a same mine may have different flotation behaviors. This is because the pyrite crystal contains lattice defect, including ionic vacancy and lattice impurity. The present work investigates the effects of three typical 3d transition metal (Co, Ni, and Fe) on the adsorption of CH3OCS2 −, OH−, and CN− on pyrite surface by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Calculated results show that Co impurity reduces the adsorption energies of CH3OCS2 − and CN− on the surface of pyrite, while Ni and Cu impurities significantly increase the adsorption energies of CH3OCS2 − and CN− on the surface of pyrite. Co impurity has small influence on the adsorption of OH−, but Ni and Cu impurities significantly increase the adsorption energies. Calculations on Mulliken charge population of Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ indicate that the Mulliken charges of Co2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ after OH− adsorption are more than those after CN− adsorption. This suggests that the ionic property of the M-OH- coordination bond is greater than that of M-CN- coordination bond, while covalent bonding of M-CN- coordination bond is greater than that of M-OH- coordination bond. The adsorption results are discussed based on coordination field theory (CFT).

"The drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a coproduct of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut off 10 percent of the world’s vanadium output. In February 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation.This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries — China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 96 percent of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage.This article summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal.Trend in vanadium explorationThe most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. These ventures are targeting deposits with higher vanadium grades than those typically mined in titaniferous magnetite operated by integrated steel-vanadium producers.The 10 percent shortfall in vanadium production resulting from the shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs is expected to be partially compensated by Largo Resources’ Maracás Menchen vanadium operation located in the state of Bahia in Brazil. It commenced operation in August 2014 and is expected to produce between 7.6 and 8.6 kt (8,421 and 9,523 st) of V2O5 in 2016 at a target production cost of $3.71/lb (Largo Resources, 2016). This is the first primary vanadium operation to be placed in production in the Western Hemisphere in more than 35 years."

The spherical agglomeration process provides an attractive method for the cleaning and recovery of fine coals in the form of compact oil-bonded pellets. In treating a washery effluent containing 50% minus 20 micron material by this technique, the slurry was first mixed under vigorous agitation with oil to deash and dewater the fine coal. The flocculated coal pulp was then formed into larger agglomerates on a modified balling disc. The operation of a semi-pilot scale process is described and an analysis of some of the operating and system variables is given. A semi-theoretical expression to predict the final agglomerate size under various conditions is derived and compared with the experimental data. Coal producers are faced with a growing requirement to clean and recover fine mesh coals. Greater mechanization of the extractive and preparation processes has resulted in finer-sized products containing larger quantities of associated foreign matter and preparation plant effluents contain quantities of fine coals which are potentially valuable. These losses will probably increase with the expansion of production and will require the development of effective disposal and utilization processes under pressure of the lack of adequate disposal areas, the enforcement of air and stream pollution laws, and the economic need to obtain the maximum yield of salable product(1)

BHP Iron Ore initiated research programs in January 1995 to develop long-term plans for decommissioning waste rock material at its Mt. Whaleback operation. More than 2 Gt (2.2 billion st) of waste rock were deposited during the past 30 years. Ultimately, a total of 4 Gt (4.4 billion st) will be deposited in waste rock dumps constructed near the open pit. The Mt. Whaleback operation is located in a semiarid climate adjacent to Newman, Western Australia. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long-term performance of the waste rock dumps with respect to vegetation, slope stability, surface runoff, erosion and water infiltration. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a cover system to prevent water infiltration to the underlying waste rock. Data obtained from a laboratory program and from soil-atmosphere modeling was used to design horizontal field test plots. The construction of the horizontal surface field test plots is discussed together with the field instruments installed to monitor performance. The cover system is designed to maximize infiltration during wet periods for subsequent evapotranspiration while minimizing surface runoff. The result is a near-zero net infiltration to the underlying waste material. An important feature of the design is the use of run-of-mine waste material as the cover material. Monitoring is in progress and will continue for at least two annual wet/dry cycles. The optimum cover system should minimize the net infiltration of water to the underlying waste rock while maintaining physical and ecological integrity for long-term performance.

A major process control system is in some ways like a complex organism. The extremities, (that is, field instruments) are exposed to many hazards and suffer malfunctions of relatively minor and repetitive nature. Here I equate a stuck valve or dead transmitter with a skin abrasion or cut. The maintenance and repair of the extremities can be done by technicians with basic but thorough knowledge of relatively few problems and their solutions. Here I equate with administering Band-Aids and aspirin. On the other extreme, when the master control device (such as a computer) fails, one does not attempt home remedies. A "brain" specialist is called in. It is, however, crucial that the patient be able to clearly describe his symptoms. Getting down to the case at hand, a complex system consisting of field instruments, instrument racks, interface equipment, and perhaps a computer, may require maintenance at all levels. At the field equipment end where physical damage, corrosive atmospheres, reconfiguration, and routine calibration checks are common, the customer has the opportunity to develop a competent staff of maintenance people. The relatively high maintenance activity assures competence through repetition.

INTRODUCTION Continuous mining machines are used in regular flat ore beds having uniform thickness. Since coal is the most common type of material occurring in such beds, most continuous miners are used for the extraction of coal from underground mines. The first continuous mining machine for under¬ground coal mining was introduced in 1948. In one machine, the continuous miner combines the functions performed by a conventional face drill, a cutting ma¬chine, and a loading machine. It breaks or digs the material out of the surrounding solid and transfers the material back through the machine chassis by means of a chain conveyor. The conveyor carries the material to a haulage system, usually a rubber-tired vehicle known as a shuttle car. Generally, continuous miners are used in seam heights from 890 to 3660 mm (35 to 144 in.). For seam heights of 1070 mm (42 in.) or less, the haulage system may be a multiple-bridge conveyor or battery-powered tractors that haul low-bed trailers. Proj¬ects are being undertaken by private industry and through government contracts to develop a continuous haulage system for all seam heights. As of 1976, the majority of continuous miners were of two types. The first type is the drum miner, which mounts the cutting elements on a series of drums across the cutting head of the machine, sometimes using a cutting chain to cut clearance for the gear drive. In the drum-type machines, the cutting head rotates parallel to the material face. The second type is the auger miner, which utilizes cutting elements mounted on two auger-type cutting heads. One head is located on each side of the machine, with the heads mounted per¬pendicular to the material face. Chain-head ripper-type miners/miners having rotary cutting elements with oscillating motion and twin-head boring-type miners have all been popular within the last 15 years. Although these are considered obsolete, some machines are still being supplied for specialized applications. GENERAL DESCRIPTION This chapter describes only continuous mining ma¬chines available as manufacturers' production models as of September 1976. Figs. 1 through 11 illustrate some typical machines currently in use. Cutting Elements The cutting elements are the interface between the machine and the material being mined. In describing the cutting elements, consideration must be given to the differences between the drum- and auger-type machines, the bit-tip speeds, and the bit types. Drum-Type Continuous Mining Machines: Three of the four principal manufacturers of drum-type miners use multi-motor designs that provide separate a-c motors for driving the cutting elements. Gear trains are used to reduce the speeds of the motors to the rotational speeds of the cutting elements. One of the three suppliers drives the cutting elements of its low-seam models with a heavy-duty drive chain that is equipped with cutting bits; all other functions of this machine have separate motor drives that are either electrical or hydraulic. The fourth principal manufacturer generally provides two a-c electric motors, utilizing gear reducers, drive shafts, and hydraulically operated engaging clutches to power all of the operating functions, including the cut¬ting elements. Some drum-type miners use trim chains, equipped with cutting bits, to cut clearance for the gear drives. These trim chains vary from two 305-mm (12-in.) chains to one 760-mm (30-in.) chain per machine, de¬pending upon the manufacturer's design concept. In all machines other than the low-seam models that use chains to drive the heads, the trim chains are driven by sprockets on the drive shaft of the final cutterhead drum; therefore, the trim chains are not used for power trans¬mission to the cutting elements. In addition to cutting clearance for the gear drives, the trim chains provide uniform bit spacing all the way across the head and assist in moving the cut material to an area where it is either loaded directly into the miner's conveyor or is easier to load into the conveyor. On a drum-type mining machine, the cutting ele¬ments all rotate from the top to the bottom. Therefore, the recommended procedure is to raise the cutterhead to the maximum seam height, sump the entire machine forward to maximum depth by means of a crawler drive, and then shear downward until the cutter elements reach the floor level. The maximum sump depth varies ac¬cording to the drum diameter, the type of material, the floor conditions, and the operator's abilities. It normally varies an average of 460 to 760 mm (18 to 30 in.). Cutter drums are supplied with two types of cutting bit holders. Weld-on holders are attached permanently. Pin-on holders are replaceable at the face. Cutter-drum diameters over the bit tips vary from 660 to 965 mm (26 to 38 in.), depending upon the chassis height of the machine and the range of cutting heights. Zinc ferrite is considered an integral phase of zinc residues as their presence can render the processing of zinc and critical metals difficult. It is a refractory phase, formed at high temperature in the presence of zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) during oxidative roasting in zinc processing plants. Because it is refractory to efficient leaching, unreacted zinc ferrite gets concentrated in the final zinc residue, making it a viable source of zinc and indium extraction. The refractory nature of zinc ferrite makes the extraction of associated critical metals difficult. In order to explore a potential economic and carbon-neutral zinc ferrite processing technique, our previous study proposed the partial reduction of zinc ferrite followed by sulfuric acid leaching of the roasting product [1-3]. As demonstrated in our previous studies, partial reduction of zinc ferrite results in a mixture of ZnO, Fe3O4 and FeO, which can be further subjected to leaching for efficient extraction of zinc and critical metals such as gallium and indium.

With the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel, accompanied by the popular topic of carbon taxes and greenhouse gas emissions, the mining industry is looking to industry specialists for assistance. The benefits of a no-idle policy reach far beyond carbon reduction and fuel savings, ranging from decreased maintenance to increased engine life. With products like battery-powered ac systems and diesel-fired heaters, going noidle is easier today than ever before. With both systems being manufactured to withstand the harsh environments of the mining industry, the end user will see a seamless change from conventional, inefficient belt-driven systems to future, standalone mobile equipment HVAC.The history of GHGs and climate changeIn 1896, Svante Arrhenius first claimed that the combustion of fossil fuels may eventually result in enhanced global warming, but not until 1955 did Gilbert Plass draw global attention to global warming by summarizing that adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere would intercept infrared radiation and thus warm the earth. Then in the early 1960s, Charles Keeling developed modern technology to produce concentration curves for atmospheric CO2 (Fig.1).In 1988, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was founded by the United Nations after acknowledgment of a rising global annual temperature. The IPCC consists of more than 2,500 scientific and technical experts from more than 60 countries. Because climate change could not be solved by a single country, the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in 1998, requiring all participating countries to reduce their GHG emissions by at least 5 percent from the 1990 levels. The Protocol was signed by 186 countries in 2001 (since then several countries have retreated from the agreement, including the United States). In 2002, the Bush administration announced a policy for climate change relying on domestic, voluntary actions to reduce the "greenhouse gas intensity" of the United States economy by 18 percent by 2012. The U.S. still attends the Kyoto conference of parties (COPs) but does not participate in negotiations, as it is not bound by its terms."

The Woodsmith Project is located in north-eastern England within the North York Moors National Park. The strata contains the world’s largest known high-grade Polyhalite resource of around 2.66 billion tonnes. The Project was initiated by York Potash Limited (YPL), a subsidiary of Sirius Minerals plc., but in March 2020, a takeover was completed by Anglo American, one of the largest mining companies in the world. Polyhalite is an evaporite mineral and contains essential nutrients required for plant growth. The Polyhalite will be extracted via two deep mine shafts and transported underground from the mine site to a Materials Handling Facility on a Mineral Transport System (MTS), which comprises a high-capacity conveyor belt system located within a 4.9 m ID tunnel. In 2018, STRABAG were awarded with the design and construction of the MTS tunnel and associated infrastructure, including the high-capacity conveyor system. The scope of work consists of 300 m of open cut, 100 m SCL tunnel, 36.5 km TBM drive (originally anticipated as three separate TBM drives) along with a network of underground caverns at the Woodsmith Mine. The construction of two 380 m deep intermediate access shafts was later awarded as Amendments to the Contract. The tunnel is constructed using a Herrenknecht Single Shield TBM. As a result of how the various elements of the project have developed over time, the first TBM drive has been extended to ~29 km making it the worlds longest single heading TBM Tunnel when complete. The option of completing the entire tunnel length with a single heading TBM drive is currently being assessed by Anglo American and STRABAG. This unprecedented tunnel length requires two intermediate shafts to provide essential access and services, the first intermediate shaft is at Lockwood beck (LWB) and the second is at Ladycross (LDX). The LWB shaft has been constructed utilising the innovative Blind Boring technique never used before in the UK. This paper will explain the methodology and technical risk management associated with this technique. The authors believe that the collaborative approach between all contract partners is and continues to be the important contributor for the success of this project.

The titanium industry is based on the unique properties of titanium dioxide and titanium metal. Because of its whiteness, high refractive index and resulting light scattering ability, titanium dioxide in its two main allotropic forms, rutile and anatase, is the predominant white pigment for paints, paper, plastics, rubber, and various other materials. Titanium metal, because of its high strength/weight ratio and resistance to corrosion, is widely used for aircraft, both in airframes and engines, for powerplant surface condensers, and a wide variety of chemical processing and handling equipment. U.S. production of titanium dioxide pigment in 1979 was about 658,000 tons - 2/, valued at about $770 million. Net shipments of titanium mill products were around 19,000 tons, worth about $380 million. These two major uses account for over 96% of domestic titanium consumption. The third largest application, the use of rutile for coating welding rods, required about 9,500 tons of rutile concentrate, worth about $4 million. Other applications of titanium-bearing raw materials include the manufacture of titanium carbides, ceramics, and chemicals, and the recently developed use of ilmenite as a substitute for barite in well-drilling muds.

One of the foremost problems in reclaiming prime farmland is compaction of the subsoil which is caused by the reclamation equipment. Wheel tractor-scrapers are most commonly used to replace subsoil and have been blamed for the majority of the compaction problems. Two methods of alleviating this problem that are presently being considered are mechanical subsoil loosening machines and truck- shovel combinations for subsoil handling. A field study was conducted in which dry bulk density measurements were taken in an effort to determine the effectiveness of truck-shovel combinations and subsoil loosening equipment in reducing bulk density in comparison to typical scraper replacement.

This paper presents the findings of a study on roof bolters' hazard exposure. A "micro-analysis" of accident data was combined with ergonomic observations of roof bolter operators to categorize bolting-related injuries and a checklist was constructed. Bolting-related problems were identified as situations that could expose bolter operators to hazards. Approaches to avoid these situations were applied at six mining operations to evaluate specific problems in roof bolting operations. The re-search emphasized the importance of analyzing worker behaviors in the context of mining situations and equipment design problems that lead to human error accidents.

Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the most refractory copper mineral when treated in conventional sulfate media leaching systems. This is the first study to examine the use of a dimethyl sulfoxide (CH3SOCH3, DMSO) solution containing copper chloride (CuCl2) for the leaching of chalcopyrite. Leaching experiments for a copper concentrate composed mainly of chalcopyrite were conducted at ambient pressure at 313–413 K. The leaching fractions of Cu, Fe, S, Au, and As were investigated. It was found that 90% of the Cu was extracted in 2 h, and 94% was extracted in 4 h at 373 K, which is competitive with other conventional processes. A DMSO solution containing CuCl2 could selectively dissolve the valuable metals Cu and Au from chalcopyrite, but leave minerals with little economic value such as pyrite (FeS2) and As in the residue. Chalcopyrite is oxidized by cupric ion in proportion to the stoichiometric ratio of Cu in the concentrate to the initial cupric ion in the DMSO solution, which is enhanced by the presence of oxygen below 373 K.

Suboleski and King (1990) analyzed the reasons for the dramatic increase in underground coal mine productivity during the last 10 years. This paper examines whether this increase can be extended. The paper forecasts whether the mix of technological, procedural and other factors that produced the increase will change in the future. This project will expand sanitary sewer within the City of Columbus. It consists of 2.5 mile long, 72-inch finished diameter pipe grouted inside 10.8-foot diameter tunnel excavation in shale. This paper describes the multi-faceted geotechnical exploration to minimize the underground risks. The tunnel will cross below a buried valley with minimum cover of highly weathered rock. The risk mitigation to cross the valley includes contingencies and cost allowances. Provisions to prevent impact on adjacent groundwater resources will be described. Latest construction updates will be provided including contractor alternate shaft support and pre-excavation probing to mitigate tunneling risk below the valley.
