"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has previously established pillar design guidelines for the underground stone mining industry. These guidelines were created from an empirical database of pillar observations and were largely drawn from shallow, flat-lying mining operations. Current trends forecast a great amount of underground stone mines developing under deeper cover, higher seam dips, and more frequent multiple-seam mining configurations than in the past. The complex loading conditions and limited experience in these environments presents a substantial increased risk of ground failure. To investigate these loading conditions, NIOSH has installed a pillar and roof monitoring system at an underground limestone mine in central Pennsylvania. The mine is operating in a seam with dips ranging from 13 to 18 degrees and overburdens ranging from 275 m (900 ft) to 425 m (1,400 ft). Instrumentation installed in an undeveloped pillar and in surrounding strata is currently measuring pillar and roof behavior in response to stress redistribution during excavation. Laser scans are being used to measure ground displacement and changes in conditions associated with local mining conditions and significant geological features. Initial stress measurements show a gradual increase in stress in response to mining, and stress changes that correspond with blasts. The seismic system is operational, with calibration events signaling on each of the 18 sensors. INTRODUCTION Improving mine-wide ground control stability can help reduce the potential for catastrophic failure of underground structures. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted prior research in stone pillar design and has established fundamental pillar design guidelines for the underground stone mining industry, which resulted in the development of the S-Pillar program (Esterhuizen et al., 2011; Esterhuizen and Murphy, 2015). The data that constitute the S-Pillar program were derived from past mining experience that was almost exclusively drawn from shallow, flat-lying, single-level mining operations1. Stakeholder interactions with NIOSH researchers have indicated that increased numbers of underground stone operations are expected to mine under significantly deeper cover, with greater seam dips, and under multi-level operating conditions (Slaker and Murphy, 2016). The complex loading conditions and limited experience in these challenging environments present a substantial increased risk of ground failure. Inadequate pillar design in these new and challenging environments could result in catastrophic wide-area pillar collapses and an increased safety burden to miners working in the U.S. limestone mining industry. To develop design guidelines and prevent inadequate pillar designs for these challenging environments, NIOSH is currently conducting detailed pillar response investigations at case-study mine sites operating in challenging environments."

Colorado nahcolite deposits, estimated at 29 billion metric tons, formed in an asp metric permanent-lake basin whose waters were rich in algae and sulfate-reducing bacteria. Nahcolite (NaHCOg) occurs in oil shale of the Green River Formation (Eocene) as aggregates (62 percent), disseminated crystals (24 percent), and impure beds (14 percent). Because much of the nahcolite is nonbedded, it will be mined with oil shale and can be concentrated to marketable grade by crushing and screening Impurities in nahcolite are kerogen, quartz, pyrite, and carbonate minerals. A promising new market for nahcolite is in the process of removal of sulfur dioxide from industrial stack gases. When heated, nahcolite reacts with sulfur dioxide to form sodium sulfate. Differences in thermally induced microporosity may explain why nahcolite is more reactive than trona, a possible competitor with nahcolite for SO2 removal. Limited production of nahcolite at one or possibly two localities is expected in the next several years, but large-scale production is probably at least 10 years away.

The rare earth element (REE) industry has sought to develop ore deposits where geologic processes have produced mineralized zones with commercially attractive concentrations. These deposits are extremely uncommon, particularly in the United States. Given the criticality of these materials and the need for a sustainable domestic supply, the current research seeks to leverage the generation and treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) as an autogenous process that can lead to concentrated REE resources.

"Dilution in underground coal operations can be underestimated by up to five times during Feasibility Studies, with disastrous economic consequences. Every 1% of stone waste introduced can reduce an in situ specific energy of 11,000 BTU/lb (25 MJ/kg) by some 110 BTU/lb (0.25 MJ/kg) and increases the abrasiveness of the run-of-mine coal. Where a wash plant is not in place, penalties imposed for not meeting contractual specifications alone can amount to some AU$1 million per year.This paper presents a method for monitoring, reporting and ultimately controlling dilution in an underground coal mining operation. The dilution trends before and after introducing the recommended controls in a continuous miner/longwall mine are presented over an eight year period. The additional information from such a dilution monitoring program can also be used to control mining horizons and plan longwall extraction heights across the face proactively, on a short-term scale with resulting improvements in productivity. INTRODUCTION Grade control, as practiced on any mine, is concerned with predicting routine quality and tonnage values for short- to medium-term mining operations, and the reconciliation of these predictions against “actual” results. For a longwall mine supplying steam coal, such routine parameters may include the proximate analyses, specific energy (SE), abrasiveness and sulphur, as well as float and sink analyses if the coal is beneficiated. In addition, grade control is concerned with identifying the mineable horizon (or horizons) in a selective-mining operation, together with monitoring how well these horizons have been extracted or adhered to. Close-spaced surface drilling can be costly for any mining venture, particularly for longwall mines operating in the deeper seams. For this reason, much of the data for short-term grade control requirements are acquired during actual bord-and-pillar development. The underground data are derived from so-called “channel” samples. These samples are cut or chipped from the coal seam, perpendicular to the mining horizon, with dimensions suitable for obtaining sufficient “representative” sample for analyses. For a 2m thick mining horizon, a channel sample 300 mm wide and 50 mm deep over the thickness of the horizon would provide some 4.5 kg of sample, sufficient for most of the necessary tests. To allow the information to be computer recorded, additional information such as seam thickness, sample co-ordinates, and the elevation of the seam (or horizon) roof or floor, may be required."

Energy Developments Ltd. (EDL) has developed power plants at two Australian coal mines that featuring 94 gas-fueled Caterpillar G3516 engine/generator sets. They will convert to electricity 145 kt/a (160,000 stpy) of coal-seam methane gas for sale to a local utility. The $100-million project will cut the sites' methane emissions in half, provide a low-cost energy source and offset mine operating costs. The project began in May 1995. It is located at the Appin and Tower longwall underground mines, 80 km (50 miles) south of Sydney in New South Wales. The installation is one of the first to capture coal-seam gas from mine ventilation air and gas drainage systems. Coal- seam gas contains 40% to 60% methane, which fluctuates constantly. The system is expected to convert 578,000 m3/d (20.4 million cu ft/d) of coal-seam gas to 94 MW. It will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3.5 Mt/a (3.8 million stpy) of CO, equivalent emissions. The Appin and Tower mines each produce 2 Mtla (2.2 million stpy) of clean coking coal. They operate around the clock with about 400 workers per site. The mines are owned by BHP Steel, Collieries Division, which will share the revenues from energy sales. The Appin Power Partnership consists of EDL and Lend Lease Development Corp.

Quartz has been of interest in occupational health for years because it can cause silicosis after prolonged exposure. New OSHA regulations (Air Contaminant; Final Rule) list perlite as a nuisance dust. They conclude that perlite is nontoxic when air-borne total particulate concentrations are 15 mg/m3 or below and when quartz content is less than 1% crystalline silica. OSHA has established an 8-hour PEL of 15 mg/m TWA for total perlite dust containing less than 1% quartz. OSHA has established a 5 mg/m3 TWA PEL for respirable perlite. These limits will protect workers from significant risk of eye, skin, or other physical irritation. This regulation is based on a Group 2A classification as a probable carcinogen in humans, at the 0.1% crystalline silica level, by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC 1987a, b). IARC found sufficient evidence for carcinogenicity of crystalline silica in animals and limited evidence in humans. Perlite is not listed as a carcinogen by OSHA or the National Toxicology Program.

Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine is located in Papua, Indonesia operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) with approximately 1,500m below surface. The ore body extend 1230m width from northwest to southeast by 300–400m length east-west. The mine currently produces at full production of 80,000 tons per day until 2041. Part of the extension of current active production block and mitigation sits 225 m above the production block 1 (PB1) and 2 (PB2A and PB2B) which located in 2590L, named production block#4 (PB4W and PB4E). As the mining continues at PB1N, PB2A, and PB2B, the cave growth vertically and laterally to south perimeter of the footprint affecting the integrity of PB4W/E footprint. Currently, PB1N and PB2N are in active production whilst PB4E development continues from South against PB1N cave, as can be seen in Figure 1. A slight overlapping between PB1E and PB4E intentionally to promote cave connections between the two caves. Despite low stress model in the PB4E near existing caves, the PB4E cave propagation expected by the large strain and will be propagating in tension failure to the PB1E cave. Hence, designing the drill drives edge and first drawbell location as close as possible to the PB1E cave is necessary to guarantee cave connection. Since PB4 footprint development commenced in December 2021, there have been a substantial cave propagation observed from existing downhole monitoring. As the PB4 footprint designed perpendicular to existing DMLZ PB1 cave, adjustment of the development edge design is necessary to reflect the progression the loosening zone propagation to the South. Final life of mine design for extraction, undercut and ventilation level were decided in October 2023 considering latest update cave (fractured/ yielded) boundary. Numerical model of potential rock mass damage also aids the decision to locate the drift edge design. Predicting the cave progression impact is critical to both production at the existing active blocks and development of the new area. The use of cave shape data from year 2021–2023 gives an insight of the cave shape estimation at the end of 2024 when the undercut drift will be developed. This paper presents actual cave growth of active production blocks and its relative vertical progression impact as the result of drawing in order to plan for acceptable rate and provide mitigation once the minimum acceptable rock mass condition and minimum pillar threshold achieved.

One of the prime objectives of the mine industry is to develop a low cost way to clean up what has been called "The Rape Of Mother Nature". The project falls under the broad umbrella of reclamation, which is now considered an essential part of the mining cycle. As such, it is being given full consideration in the initial planning of all surface operations. In most areas, if a proposed mining system does not lend itself to proper reclamation, it is not an acceptable system. By combining mining and reclamation plans, a producer not only can minimize reclamation costs, but can also restore the land to usefulness and insure continuing profits after a deposit is depleted. As long as fifteen years ago, many of the larger mining companies were already deeply involved in this extra cost work. Even then the involved companies were projecting a great need for a bigger bulldozer, Bigger than anything commercially available. At that time, the D9 tractor weighed about 60,000# bare weight.

In 1989 an Autogenous Grinding Task Force was formed to study potential autogenous grinding circuits to replace the existing semi-autogenous grinding at the National Steel Pellet Plant located in Keewatin, Minnesota. Pilot plant test work performed by the Hanna Research Center (HRC) indicated that fully autogenous grinding with pebble extraction and crushing could feasibly be incorporated into the existing circuits. In 1990, one of the existing ten grinding mills was converted for an in-plant test incorporating pebble crushing. The full scale test work conducted in 1990 and 1991 verified the pilot plant projections with primary mill throughputs from the fully autogenous circuit utilizing pebble crushing being greater than throughput of the existing SAG mill circuits.

In situ stress on the scale of a tunnel or mine may be distorted by geologic structures. The resulting variations of in situ stress have a direct bearing on the potential for mining-induced seismicity. New evidence from the Lucky Friday Mine collected by U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers, as well as a review of case studies, demonstrates that in situ stress variations affect the spatial distribution of mining-induced seismicity. Although overcore stress measurements have been useful in these studies, they are too expensive and, depending on conditions, may be too difficult, to use routinely in mapping stress variations. However, information from borehole and raisebore breakouts; deformation of mine openings; and patterns of seismicity, ground control problems, and rock burst damage can be used to build a stress database. This database can then be used in con-junction with maps of mine structure and geology and models of rock mass behavior to build a map of in situ stress variations. Such a map provides a means to anticipate patterns of mining-induced seismicity that are likely to be encountered and, hence, provide a means for planning appropriate measures to ameliorate rock-burst hazards.

Commissioning a mineral processing plant has always been a challenging task. The process includes pre- operational verification, dry and wet commissioning, and a gradual ramp-up to full production, all of which must be executed within the shortest possible timeframe, requiring numerous highly interdependent tasks to be conducted concurrently. This phase is under scrutiny by shareholders, corporate management, and other stakeholders who are keen to see a return on investment as the operation starts yielding results. Despite extensive documentation in the literature highlighting its significance, the impact of the commissioning phase remains underestimated in contemporary mining projects. This paper provides an overview of the commissioning process and its associated challenges before focusing on a critical success factor: building a dedicated commissioning team with the required competencies and personality profiles. The roadmap to achieving an efficient plant start-up is outlined. Drawing on over 15 years of experience with more than 20 concentrator commissioning and start-ups, a general framework is presented to maximize success. This method emphasizes the crucial role of the operation and metallurgy team in supporting these projects. Finally, insights from Soutex’s involvement in multiple start-ups are shared, offering lessons learned that emphasize best practices and challenges encountered in expediting the ramp-up process while maintaining high Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards.

A glauconitic siltstone sample with a potash content of 10% is investigated as a potential potash source. The fine grain structure comprises potash bearing phases of glauconite, muscovite, and microcline. The as-received samples showed poor dissolution ~ 5%. Planetary ball milling was attempted for the dissociation of the underlying silicate structure for the potash release, and ~ 60% potash was obtained after 12-h milling. Mechanical activation (8 h, 60% NaOH) prior to heat treatment (600 °C, 30 min) was found successful in recovering more than 95%K values from glauconite. The final residue consists mainly of quartz, indicating a complete breakdown of the silicate matrix. The mechanical activation process followed is simple, adaptable, and less energyintensive compared to existing methods.

Forecasting demand is an art as well as a science, and much personal judgment is required. National forecasts made for sand and gravel, crushed stone, and/or aggregate may be misleading or unhelpful locally. This is because of significant variation in demand within different geographic and/or political areas in the United States, and/or the use of an inadequate data base and forecasting methodology. The best forecasts may be made for local or regional market areas, irrespective of geographic or political boundaries, provided a proper data base is available. The Bureau of Mines compiles detailed statistics on commodities sold or used in the construction industries and, therefore, is in an advantageous position to make national aggregate demand forecasts.

Corrosion studies in laboratory ball mills and grinding environment simulations produce corrosion rates and total metal removal rates much lower than those recorded in operating production ball mills. The corrosion component of ball metal loss in commercial mills represents less than 10% of the total loss expressed as micrometers/hour of exposure in recent USBM tests. Such small absolute losses are consistent with ball metal loss measured in production ball mill marked ball wear tests to determine effects of corrosion and abrasion resisting properties of alloys in operating mills which indicate that metal hardness and microstructure determine relative metal loss rates of a given situation. The combination of ore characteristics and grinding process dynamics determine metal loss severity. Alloying for corrosion resistance and modification of the milling corrosion environment yield relatively small metal loss reductions. Alloying and heat treatment to produce high hardness and microstructures of high carbon martensite and for cast irons, M7C3 carbides produces the lowest metal losses in typical wet grinding applications.

INTRODUCTION The decontamination of the former Shiprock uranium millsite and the interim stabilization of its tailings piles began in March 1974, and ended in June 1978. Personnel monitoring for whole body gamma ray exposure was conducted for selected individuals working at the mill site throughout most of this period. The millsite and exposure conditions are briefly described to develop a basis for interpretation of the exposure data. Millsite The Shiprock uranium millsite is located in the community of Shiprock, New Mexico on a bench overlooking the San Juan River (Figure 1). Both Shiprock and the millsite are located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. About 1.5 million tons of tailings were produced on the millsite during its operation from 1954 to 1963. The tailings were pulped with waste process fluids and water, and discharged to form two tailings piles. The piles (ponds, dams) were formed with earth starter dikes and the dikes were then raised using the separated sand fraction of the tailings. The slime fraction of the tailings were discharged into the diked impoundment. The mill was shut down and partially dismantled before the lease expired in 1973, and the remainder of the mill and tailings reverted back to the Navajo Tribe which was the lessor. Portions of the millsite were then occupied by the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority (NECA), a tribal enterprise. In addition to its regular activities, NECA established an on-site training school for heavy equipment operators. The trainees principally used the south tailings pile as a practice area and spread the tailings into a 10 hectare row of raffinate ponds located along the southwest side of the millsite. Overall, the training activities inceased the effective area of the tailings piles from 20 to 35 hectares. Another 56 hectares were contaminated with wind and water eroded tailings. Exposure Conditions Persons decontaminating a millsite may be subject to radiation exposures from several sources. Only whole body gamma exposures are discussed in this report. These exposures are arbitrarily divided into three levels: high, intermediate, and low. The levels are related to areas in which the decontamination work was being done and have no connotation concerning imminent hazards. High exposures would result when persons were working with raw tailings, and intermediate exposures would occur when persons were working in the ore storage and mill yards. Low exposures would result from working in areas where surface contamination exists from wind and water erosion. Flow models are used to predict the extraction efficiency of metals in rock piles. These models typically use hydraulic parameters obtained through column studies, which assume that the material in the column wholly represents the entire pile and the parameters can be upscaled several orders of magnitude for model evaluation. This assumption fails for parameters that are spatially variable or scale dependent. To overcome these issues, measurements made directly on the heap at the appropriate model scale can be made with the electrical resistivity method. The method aims to map the variations in the electrical resistivity, which can be associated with moisture content, degree of fines, metal content, and leachate concentration. We present an example of calibrating the resistivity with borehole measurements of moisture using geostatistics to show how the resistivity method can be used to obtain a spatial moisture distribution. It was shown that cokriging the resistivity and moisture together gives a more reliable distribution.

There are presently in use many grinding mill control schemes and concepts. This paper presents one operating method of controlling the particle size of the cyclone overflows for proper metallurgical results and controlling the level of the cyclone feed sump and new feed rate to obtain lowest unit cost of finished (ground) material which is usually at the maximum grinding mill throughput. This system stresses simplicity of field instrumentation and control strategy. Both of these factors lead to better operator understanding and acceptance. The low capital investment of this system also makes it more attractive at the Buick Concentrator when compared to other more complicated systems utilizing mass flow measurement and a computer to calculate circulating load and infer particle size. Furthermore, it has the advantage of utilizing an actual measurement for control, rather than a difficult-to-maintain inferred value. There are several reasons for maximizing mill throughput at Buick. The milling rate before automatic control was too low when compared to mill throughput increases planned for the future. Through this new operating system, it appears Buick will not have to make major changes of mill motors and speeds to meet the increased? production rate. Also, since power costs continue to escalate, it is desirable to maximize the throughput to the grinding circuit and reduce overgrinding to achieve a reduction in power cost per ton of ore milled. Presently, 45% of the concentrators' total power is consumed in this grinding circuit.

Despite technological advancements and organizational adjustments, lost time accidents are major issues in occupational safety. However, there is very limited work that focuses on variables influencing days lost as a result of occupational accidents. In this study, decision tree and artificial neural network methods were used as machine learning techniques to investigate the impact of factors on accident lost day duration. Degree of injury, worker age, and worker activity were found to be the top three variables impacting loss of time from work. It was also identified that the mining method, location, and nature of injury had a moderate influence on duration lost due to occupational accidents. However, worker experience and ore type did not have any significant impact on the duration, which is an unexpected result. These results confirmed that some accident factors that might have a large influence on the number of mine accidents can be less critical when it comes to accident lost day duration.

INTRODUCTION The Soudan 2 Cavern was completed in 1986 as a physics research laboratory located 713 m below ground in northern Minnesota. A paper in the 1985 RETC proceedings presented the background and planned usage for the cavern, site investigation and rock conditions, contract documents, and a bid summary. This is a follow-up paper describing construction of the cavern. The Soudan 2 excavation, 71.8 m long by 13.9 m wide by 11.6 m high, was excavated by drill and blast methods and mucked by crawler tractor and mine hoist. The excavation sequence consisted of twin top-heading pilot tunnels followed by removal of the top heading pillar and finally the bench. Various blasting designs were used to achieve adequate breakage and acceptable levels of blast damage control at the cavern perimeter. The geologic conditions exposed in the cavern, and the support needs of the rock encountered, are compared to the conditions interpreted from the site investigation. The influence of specific geologic features on cavern performance will be described. Initial support and final lining consisted of full length grouted rockbolts and reinforced and plain shotcrete. Trials were conducted with steel-fiber reinforced shotcrete and microsilica additives. The study aimed to evaluate the separation performance of a full-scale continuous centrifugal concentrator in the reconcentration of fine hematite from high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) concentrate in a tailings recovery plant, and to investigate the usefulness of the technology in industrial applications. The effect of changing the operating variables on concentrate grade and recovery was studied. The results indicate that among the variables considered in the study (water spray pressure, centrifugal acceleration, feed volume flow rate, feed percent solids and the reciprocation and spacing of water sprays), the change in centrifugal acceleration affects the recovery the most and continuous concentration can be achieved only when the water spray has a sufficient pressure. In addition, the reciprocation and spacing of the water sprays have a significant influence on the concentrate grade. Although performance of the full-scale concentrator is slightly inferior to pilot-scale trials, due to limitations in the scale-up design and the fluctuations of feed material characteristics, this concentrator provides a potential way to achieve continuous concentration and obtain a high-grade concentrate from tailings.
