The Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research on a dewatering technique for fine particles generated during the mineral beneficiation process that will recover a portion of the water now being lost using conventional waste disposal methods and significantly reduce the time required for land reclamation. The technique utilizes a flocculant, polyethylene oxide (PEO), that forms strong stable flocs that can be dewatered rapidly on static and/or rotary screens. In field tests, phosphate clay waste has been dewatered from a nominal 2.5 percent solids to greater than 20 percent solids. In other field tests, coal-clay waste has been dewatered from a nominal 3 percent solids to greater than 55 percent solids, in addition, small-scale continuous tests have shown that bentonitic clays can be dewatered from 12 percent solids to 40 percent solids.

Federal regulations require that refuge alternatives (RAs) be located within 305 m (1,000 ft) of the working face and spaced at one-hour travel distances in the outby area in underground coal mines, in the event that miners cannot escape during a disaster. The Mine Safety and Health Administration mandates that RAs provide safe shelter and livable conditions for a minimum of 96 hours while maintaining the apparent temperature below 35 °C (95 °F). The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health used a validated thermal simulation model to examine the mechanisms of heat loss from an RA to the ambient mine and the effect of mine strata composition on the final internal dry bulb temperature (DBT) for a mobile tent-type RA. The results of these studies show that 51 percent of the heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine is due to radiation and 31 percent to conduction. Three mine width and height configurations and four mine strata compositions were examined. The final DBT inside the RA after 96 hours varied by less than 1 °C (1.8 °F) for the three mine width/height configurations and by less than 2 °C (3.6 °F) for the four mine strata compositions.

This paper presents design considerations for the major underground elements of the pending BCRUA Phase 2 Raw Water Delivery System Project. These elements include two Lake Taps; an 8,800 LF, minimum 10-ft OD intake tunnel; a suction chamber with 6 Pump Shafts; a 30-ft diameter, 300-ft deep Main Shaft; a 2,600 LF Transmission Tunnel with 78-inch steel liner; and a 130-ft deep shaft on the Transmission Tunnel. The tunnels and shafts will be excavated through the Glen Rose limestone. The design development included consideration for technical requirements, easements, third party commitments, previous local project experience, and constructability based on contractor outreach.

Large scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogenous mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to take advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semi- autogenous mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4,476 kW (6,000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 mtpd (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and five variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.

Kaolin, normally an inert filler when compounded with polymers, is converted into a strongly reinforcing pigment by prereaction with certain functional silanes. Modification of kaolin with amino and mercapto silanes allows it to form crosslinks and confers significant improvements in modulus, abrasion resistance, compression set and other physical properties of a broad range of polymers.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 had far reaching effects upon many aspects of mining, ventilation being no exception. In this paper, good ventilation procedures are briefly reviewed, and attention is focused on the changes brought about by the new Act. By way of illustration the ventilation system for a typical Pittsburgh Block system is developed and the requirements of the fan determined. This is then solved by an available computer program, and the application is evaluated. Figure 1 represents a projected system for a coal property 1 by 3 miles in plan at a depth of 1000 feet with a coal thickness of 6 feet and desired daily tonnage of approximately 7200 tons on a two-shift basis. Only one half of the mine is shown (north area) with a mirror image mining arrangement to be developed concurrently for the south area. Six working units are projected, three in each area, one on pillar extraction, another developing panel entries and a third on main entry development. A two-split system is used for each working section so that the continuous miner and bolting crews each have a separate split of air, and no equipment need pass through a line brattice. The old requirement of 6000 cfm at the last open crosscut has been increased to 9000 cfm, and for the first time a minimum quantity (3000 cfm) is stipulated at the face thus requiring either line brattice or an auxiliary fan. With the respirable dust requirement limited to 3 mg/m3, the use of a blower system is precluded and exhaust systems are virtually the only choice. Maintaining the line brattice within 10 feet of the working face at all times as required by the new law has a definite effect on the mining cycle and is most difficult at best. In the highly gaseous Pittsburgh seam located in south-western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia quantities of 20,000 cfm per split are not uncommon to maintain the methane percentage below the required l%

The production of ultrafine slurries and powders is possible with small media made out of Si02, A1203, Fe203, Zr03 or other raw materials due to the fact that since approximately 12 years from now, entirely new machines have been developed which allow to use this small media for the production of ultrafine pigments. Basically we distinguish between two grinding methods which are: A.) Dry Grinding with Air Classification: This method is used for more than fifty years but only since four years this technology is realized with small grinding media. Many problems like cooling, abrasion, control of the media flow, separation media from product, grinding media recycling etc. had to be resolved before it was possible to get in full production with this new system. Hereafter a flow-sheet of such a TRZK mill with an air classifier especially designed to produce end products with a top size between 2,5 and 3,0 micron and with an average particle size between 0,3 and 0,5 micron.

"Fatigue presents several challenges for the mining industry. Depending on the specific occupation, daily work or operational setup on any given mine site, mining jobs can have a fair amount of labor-intensive tasks mixed with monotonous and repetitive duties. Combined with the long working hours and shift-work schedules of mining work, the prevalence of fatigue in mine workers may seem rather unsurprising.Mining is certainly not alone in facing the challenge of addressing worker fatigue. Indeed, many of the characteristics above mirror the similarities of fatigue in other industries, such as health care, aviation and security. To the extent that fatigue in mining acts like fatigue in any other industry, then any fatigue management applications, trainings, or interventions in existence can be borrowed from other industries and applied to mining in a cookie-cutter approach. However, some have argued that mining in particular is especially susceptible to increases in the prevalence of fatigue beyond the characteristics listed above due to the multifaceted combination of factors in mining environments associated with fatigue: dim lighting; limited visual acuity; hot temperatures; loud noise; highly repetitive, sustained, and monotonous tasks; shiftwork; long work hours; long commute times due to mine site remoteness; early morning awakenings; and generally poor sleep habits (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, 2012; Legault, 2011). Legault (2011) in particular argues that it is the combination of these factors simultaneously that can make mineworkers particularly susceptible to sleep deprivation and fatigue in comparison to other industries where these factors are often not present all together. If fatigue looks and acts different in mining, as others have argued, more research is needed to determine if, how, and why worker fatigue might need to be managed differently in mining.While the burden of fatigue on the mining population has not yet been evaluated thoroughly, methods and measures of fatigue management remain a popular point of discussion. Many commercial suppliers and consultancy groups have begun to develop technologically based fatigue monitoring systems (McMillian, 2013). This study simulates the impact of a shale gas well casing breach near a longwall mine. Field studies are conducted to measure mining-induced permeability changes over the abutment pillar of a longwall mine, and a geomechanical model is developed in 3DEC, a three-dimensional numerical modeling code, to predict the aperture of fractures in the overburden at the study site. The predicted aperture values are used to determine mining-induced permeabilities, and the results are compared with the field measurements. These aperture values are provided as inputs into fracture flow code (FFC), which generates a stochastic discrete fracture network (DFN) model for the study site and predicts the potential shale gas flow to the mine. Results from 100 DFN realizations are statistically analyzed using the bootstrapping method to compensate for notable variation in fracture geometry. The results show a significant difference between the gas inflow for nearby panels due to increase in the induced permeability during mining of the second panel. The average gas flow to the mine was calculated as 4.72 × 10 m3/s (49 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Sewickley horizon during the first panel mining, 8.97 × 10 m3/s (19 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Uniontown horizon during the first panel mining, 2.16 × 10 m3/s (458 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Sewickley horizon during the second panel mining, and 8.07 × 10 m3/s (171 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Uniontown horizon during the second panel mining. Depending on the mine ventilation system, this could result in methane concentrations exceeding regulatory limits. Hence, these findings provide insights into the potential risk of an unconventional gas well casing breach near a longwall mine under shallow cover.

In early 1970, General Mills Chemicals, Inc. announced the availability of en improved liquid ion exchange reagent, LIX® 64N, for the recovery of copper from various solutions, such as dump leach liquors. LIX 64N has been shown to be a considerable advance over LIX 64, and is presently in use in three commercial plants. Results have been very gratifying. For example, one of the plants was designed for operational production of 40,000 pounds copper per day, and in fact reached this output within the third week following startup of the plant. In addition to the operating plants, another is scheduled to come on stream this month with L D( 64N being used to extract and recover both copper and nickel. The chemical properties and operating characteristics of this reagent have been fully described in a previous paper. 1 LIX 64N is quite an effective and selective extractint for copper, even with copper contents as high as 15 g/l, but the reagent is somewhat limited in pH range, and loses some of its extraction efficiency as the pH drops below 0.8. Liquors derived from vat leaching, electrolytic tankhouae bleed streams, or some of the new leach schemes derived to solubilize copper from sulfide concentrates are examples of the liquors that present major problems when treated via liquid ion exchange. LIX 64N could extract some of the copper from such streams, but recovery was limited to about 75 percent. Also, in some parts of the world there are streams which are relatively low in copper (-5 g/l) but which are very high in acid (25-50 g/1 H2SO4). Again, LIX 64N can attain only about 75 percent recovery from such streams. One of the greatest environmental issues related to the development of the mining activity is the generation of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). Many methods have been developed for AMD treatment, being wetlands a good option for heavy metal removal. In this sense, the implementation of artificial wetlands for the treatment of mining effluents would seem to be an environmentally friendly alternative. In this paper, we present the results on the elimination of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb and Fe) using two Peruvian native species such as Schoenoplectus californicus (C.A. Mey.) and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex Steud. The results show that Schoenoplectus californicus preferentially removes copper (82 and 90%), lead (88 and 92%) and iron (28 and 69%), whereas Phragmites australis removes copper (68 and 87%) and zinc (53 and 95%). Likewise, it is observed that the Schoenoplectus californicus mainly retains the ions in its root, copper (89%), zinc (84%) and iron (76%). While the Phragmites australis accumulates iron (62%) and copper (74%) in the steam and root part respectively

"With maintenance costs rising and an increasing demand for higher production, the use of sealed spherical roller bearings can reduce maintenance costs while providing increased production uptime. The sealed spherical bearing has increased bearing life by slowing the ingress of contamination. This paper will describe how contamination and bearing wear is reduced by reviewing case histories from coal and metal mines that improved their production by decreasing downtime using sealed spherical roller bearings. INTRODUCTION The spherical roller bearing (SRB) is a robust rolling element bearing that can accommodate high radial loads, low to moderate axial loads, and misalignment with no loss in carrying capacity. (i.e. Figure 1) Because of these characteristics, it is a favorite in mining applications and many other heavy industry applications. Primary applications are the various pulleys on conveyors. Coal and hard rock mines have hundreds of miles of conveyor lines and countless head, tail, drive, and idler pulleys. Maintaining the bearings on these pulleys and replacing bearings that have failed can be a huge expense to a mine in components, labor and downtime. Ideally, the bearings are replaced when the pulley is changed out according to the maintenance cycle, about every 4 years. Reality, however, causes the bearings to be changed out every year, or sooner. These premature bearing replacements can cause production shut downs for as long as 8 hours. Conveyor pulleys have been targeted at many mines as the single biggest maintenance pain point.The primary reason for replacing conveyor bearings is internal wear from fine, solid particle and water ingress through the bearing housing seals. (i.e. Figures 2 & 3) Traditionally, the bearing is mounted in a split pillow block housing (SAF, FSAF, SDAF or SNL are typical industry styles) with only labyrinth seals (LER/LOR) for protection against the ingress of contaminants. The bearings are lubricated with grease. A common way to extend the MTBR is to purge the bearing system with large quantities of grease to flush out the contaminants. If the bearing, and thus the housing seals are not frequently purged with grease, fine solid contaminants enter the housing and bearing through the labyrinth cavities."

Coal preparation is based on the properties of noncombustable materials (impurities) in coal being different from the organic constituents. The most commonly used property difference is density, via its affect on settling rates; and either gravitational or centrifugal forces can be used to remove impurities. However, examination of various particles settling rate correlations shows that at smaller sizes, particle drag becomes a very important factor. Classification, based on differential settling rates, becomes impractical and some property other than density must provide the basis for fine coal cleaning. Froth flotation and agglomeration employ differences in surface properties to clean coal. These methods are very successful except that the oxidized surface of a pyrite particle is somewhat hydrophobic and will tend to be collected with the organic portion of the coal. Surface property cleaning techniques have not been very effective in rejecting sulfur, except for two-stage flotation.

The Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation in northern Alberta contains bituminous sands interbedded with other sediments which form the reject encountered during mining operations. Grade prediction is based on a combination of geological interpretation, computer modelling and past mining experience. In addition to estimates for ore, an accurate estimate of "waste" or "reject," are required for Mine Planning. This study investigates the ability of point-kriging using geostatistics, to augment the existing data base of drill-holes in a study area on Syncrude's leases. This approach enables the assessment of potential "worst" case - "best" case scenarios within the context of Mine Planning.

The University of Kentucky conducted inerting tests and angle of ejection tests on three types of rock dust. A newly developed hydrophobic dust was compared against typical dry and wet dust applications. This new product is designed to alleviate respirable dust concerns for dry dusting and caking issues with wet dusting. Samples for both test types were prepared in a laboratory and subjected to temperature and humidity cycles that are typical of an underground coal mine. Inerting tests were conducted in a 38-L chamber with a 5-kJ Sobbe igniter. Angle of ejection testing was conducted at the University of Kentucky Explosives Research Team’s laboratory in Georgetown, KY. The results of these tests indicate that the newly developed dust has improved results for flame suppression and ejection compared with typical wet dust applications. The significance of these results is discussed with regard to existing respirable dust regulations and the issues associated with caking.

"The United States’ supply of critical minerals has been a concern and a source of potential strategic vulnerabilities for U.S. economic and national security interests for decades (for example, see Strategic and Critical Minerals Stockpiling Act, 1939). More recently, with the rapid increase in the types of materials being used in advanced technologies (Fortier et al. 2018a), and geopolitical events surrounding the supply of rare earth elements (Ting and Seaman, 2013), among other developments, the critical minerals issue has again achieved a high level of visibility within the U.S. government (Executive Order 13817 (2017)).In this paper, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provides an overview of its ongoing focus on critical minerals through the agency’s core competencies in mineral information, mineral resource assessments, geologic and topographic mapping, geophysical surveys and mineral resource research. Aspects of the multifaceted critical minerals issue addressed here include:• Identifying minerals that meet the definition of “critical” provided in Executive Order 13817.• U.S. net import reliance for critical mineral raw materials.• Current status of domestic critical mineral resource assessments.• Current status of topographic and geologic mapping, and geophysical survey coverage of the United States.• The Earth Mapping Resources Initiative (Earth MRI) to support future critical mineral exploration.• Critical mineral potential of waste streams from extractive industries.Identifying minerals as criticalU.S. government agencies and other organizations use a number of existing definitions and criteria to identify a mineral or mineral material as critical, strategic or otherwise important. The executive order defined a “critical mineral” to be “(i) a nonfuel mineral or mineral material essential to the economic and national security of the United States, (ii) the supply chain of which is vulnerable to disruption, and (iii) that serves an essential function in the manufacturing of a product, the absence of which would have significant consequences for our economy and national security.” This definition is broadly consistent with that defined by the National Research Council (NRC, 2008) and may be summarized as “essential in use” and “subject to disruption of supply.” Virtually all of the dozens of critical minerals studies conducted since the 2008 NRC report have used some variation of this same definition (Hayes and McCullough, 2018)."

As the 2009 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2009 issue of Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Vol. 326. A significant portion of the contribution that we as a society make is the publication of professional and technical papers that contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge and information transfer. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. Through the information-transfer mechanisms of books, magazines, meetings and electronic media, the technology exchange that is fundamental to the existence of the Society is accomplished. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume certainly satisfies that intent. In keeping with SME’s tradition of promoting technological developments while honoring the past, the 2009 Transactions represents an important milestone. It is the last Transactions to appear as a bound volume. Future volumes will appear as e-books only, with some of the Transactions-only papers appearing online prior to the ebook (exactly what form the new Transactions will take is still in development). The decision to go to an all-digital format for this longstanding publication was a difficult one, but one which we hope will better serve the mining community, especially our international members. This 2009 Transactions of SME, Vol. 326, contains a total of 73 technical papers (510 pages), including all 23 papers (136 pages) that were published in 2009 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 61) and all 32 papers (232 pages) that were published in 2009 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 26). In addition, this volume contains 18 papers (142 pages) that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All 73 technical papers were peer-reviewed and approved. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and publications staff. As the 2009 president of SME and on behalf of our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

"Foreword by Lisa SchlinkSuperintendent, operations, Freeport-McMoRan Inc.,Green Valley, AZ, USAThe sixth annual Student Poster Contest hosted by the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration was held during the 2015 SME Annual Conference and Expo in Denver, CO. The contest had another record-breaking attendance of 31 entries: 27 graduate and four undergraduate. The universities represented were: Colorado School of Mines, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, University of Wyoming and West Virginia University.The competition began with an extended abstract review by a panel of judges selected from MPD members. At the SME Annual Conference, all students displayed their posters, highlighting their research. The students with the top abstracts from the graduate and undergraduate divisions presented their research at the MPD Student Poster Session Wednesday morning. The panel of judges then provided tallied scores for the abstract, poster and presentation to determine the winners of the 2015 Student Poster Contest. The first- and second-place winners of both the graduate and undergraduate divisions received $1,000 and $500 scholarships, respectively. The third through seventh places received $200 each, and all other entrants received $100 each and were invited to join the MPD Luncheon.In the undergraduate division, Annette Hein of the University of Wyoming received first place for her research on “Solvent Extraction of Europium from a Nitric Acid Solution.” Second place went to Jennifer Galvin of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for her research titled “Solvent Extraction of Neodymium Using PC88A.”In the graduate division, Caelen Anderson of the Colorado School of Mines received first place for his research titled “Fundamentals of Rare-earth Flotation Surface Chemistry: Hydroxamate Adsorption on Bastnasite”. This is Caelen’s fourth year placing in the top finisher. Second place in the graduate division went to Seyed Hassan Amini of West Virginia University for his research on “Ultra Clean Coal Production for the Solar-cell Industry.”The 2015 Student Poster Contest was chaired by Lisa Schlink (Freeport- McMoRan Inc.) and Emily Sarver (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). A mathematical model is presented for the electrokinetic dewatering of suspensions of phosphatic clays. The modeling approach couples a boundary-element model for solution of Laplace?s equation to a recently developed constitutive equation that relates the change in solids content with applied electric field and time. The observation that the electric field controls both the maximum solids content achievable and the time required to reach that value is shown to severely constrain the application of electrokinetic dewatering strategies to an entire clay settling area. The approach, however, may be feasible for implementation as part of a continuous plant process.

Lidding over or tunneling existing transportation infrastructure is currently under review in several U.S. cities. The main reasons for this are the use of the created space for urban development, the reduction of noise and exhaust fumes for the residents, and, thus, a significant increase in the quality of life. The main aspects to be considered during the planning process are (1) total investment and operational costs, (2) impact of construction works on current traffic, (3) safety and fire protection, and (4) socio-environmental issues. The paper presents some basic planning principles, and experiences of recent urban highway coverages are shared.
