The Tertiary carbonate aquifer of central Florida is composed of about 2/3 calcite and 1/3 dolomite with minor amounts of quartz and apatite. The Mg content of the calcite is lower in the recharge areas than in the deeper confined parts of the aquifer system. Various geochemical lines of evidence indicate that much of the dolomite is of penecontemporaneous origin but that some may have been formed much later, possibly by ground water. Theoretical studies indicate that the Mg/Ca ratio in solutions is about unity for the three-phase equilibrium, calcite-dolomite-water. Solutions, such as ocean water and some subsurface brines, have Mg/Ca ratios higher than one and should represent dolomitizing solutions. In the areas of principal recharge to the Floridan aquifer, ground water is undersaturated with respect to both calcite and dolomite, and the Mg/Ca ratiois as low as 0.05. As the water moves downgradient, the Mg/Ca ratio systematically increases and approaches unity; saturation of the solution with respect to both calcite and dolomite also increases with length of travel in the system. Thus, in the zone of active potable-water circulation, the chemical process is one of dissolution of minerals until saturation is reached or exceeded. However, in the deeper brackish-water zones that underlie peninsular Florida, dolomite may be forming where the Mg/Ca ratio is greater than one. The necessary Mg may be derived from ocean water or brines recycled through the system as the hydrologic regimen is changed. The driving force may be simple mixing, relative fluctuations of sea level, or a combination of mechanisms.

I. Introduction The experimental work described in this paper was carried out during 1967 and 1968 in an inclined reinforced concrete adit which had been driven during 1965 and 1966 to provide primary access for a new gypsum mine. The new mine was situated near the village of Sherburn-in-Elmet in central Yorkshire in an area of extensive post-glacial plains of deltaic and lacustrine origin. These plains cover a large area of this part of Yorkshire extending inland from the coast for a distance of about 35 miles. The gypsum deposit at Sherburn dates from Permian times and it is considered" to have been associated with the western-most edges of the ancient Zechstein Sea which was also responsible for the formation of the extensive evaporite deposits in north-east Yorkshire. The gypsum deposit, which varies in thickness from 10 to 15 feet, is extremely pure and it occurs quite close to the surface; in the Sherburn area the overburden is only 120 feet thick. The proximity of the deposit to the surface, however, tends to give a somewhat false idea of the magnitude of the problems associated with its extraction. These problems were all related to the nature of the overlying strata. As has already been mentioned, the surface deposits are post-glacial and they consist of an extremely large number of thin layers of varved clays, fine silts and sands extending down to a depth of 75 feet. From the bottom of the post-glacial deposits to the seam, a distance of about 45 feet, the strata consists of a succession of marls, weak sandstones, and siltstones, which although they are inherently incompetent materials, are appreciably stronger

Research and development studies were carried out at the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology to produce a synthetic forsterite sand from asbestos tailings for Les Sables Olimag Inc. The National Research Council of Canada also supported and collaborated to the project. Theoretically, the technological approach consists of a heat at over 1300°C; however, the process without additive would result in the production of an enstatite-rich product (MgSiO3) having a fusion temperature less than 1600°C. The purpose was to foster the formation of forsterite (Mg2SiO4), a more refractory compound. The fabrication of the forsterite product requires pre-agglomeration of serpentine-MgO with a binder, which is stable at high temperature, to prevent the loss of the powdered magnesium oxide as dust in the kiln off gases and to maintain the mixture homogeneous during the process. Characterization of the end products with respect to mineral composition and thermal resistance are described. The synthetic forsterite in sand form was tested with success under a bath of liquid steel maintained at 1700°C for up to two hours. The advantages of the new sand and its potential applications will be reviewed.

Early Proterozoic ore deposits in the Verde district at Jerome, Arizona have produced 33.7 million metric tons of ore (1893-1975). The United Verde and United Verde Extension deposits produced most of the ore that yielded 1,644,323,100 kg Cu plus large amounts of Au, Ag, and Zn. These deposits are situated on the fractured and hydrothermally altered apex of a large submarine rhyolitic extrusive (Cleopatra formation). Precambrian lithologies are penetratively deformed and at Jerome the Fl folds plunge steep to the NNW. For the past two decades the volcanogenic model has superseded the replacement theory of ore formation.

The Limberg III PSP is one of the European projects that addresses the implementation of the UN SDGs. The challenge of the project is the construction of a 770 m long pressure shaft to be excavated with a TBM at an inclination of 42°.

Spalling and rockburst are unwanted brittle failures at the boundaries of underground excavations that are commonly observed in hard rock and high-stress environments at significant depths, although, spalling has also been observed in comparatively shallow soft rocks. The crack initiation (CI) stress threshold (representing the stress level at which new micro cracks begin to form in an intact rock) is widely used to establish the in-situ spalling strength, and is generally regarded as the lower limit of the long-term rock strength. This study analyses the evolution of CI and other mechanical properties for a high-porosity sandstone with an average UCS of 38 MPa under unconfined cyclic compressive loading. The results indicate that rock properties are variably affected by cyclic loading with; no significant effect on Youngs Modulus; a moderate increase in Poisson’s ratio and fracture angle; a moderate decrease in UCS; and a major reduction in the CI stress threshold. All of these changes were generally amplified by cyclic loading at higher stresses. From the results, it is concluded that rockburst and spalling limit in underground structures may reduce over time if the rock is subject to repetitive cyclic loading, and that the reductions will be greater for higher cyclic stresses. This may be a significant factor in the design and operation of some deep underground structures.

Geological, hydrological, and geochemical information synthesized in a Geographical Information System (GIS) for water and rock surrounding South and Middle Forks of Mineral Creek, northwest of Silverton Colorado, was analyzed to distinguish between the natural and the mining-related sources of metals to dace waters in the watershed An important natural source of metals to surface water emanates from a porphyry molybdenum deposit south and upslope from the Middle Fork of Mineral Creek. Interaction of surface and ground water with fractured, altered rocks and permeable, Quatemay-age surficial deposits produces downstream water quality that does not meet current State of Colorado water quality standards for metals and pH. GIS site characterization and three-dimensional modeling distinguish surficial deposits as volumetrically substantial, significant sources of naturally occurring metals that strongly influence water quality and complicate ongoing mine-site mitigation efforts. Our findings indicate that regional hydrologic and geologic information needs to be evaluated before realistic water quality guidelines are established and mitigation recommendations are confidently implemented.

Twin roll sizers are neither compactly designed machines nor are they configured to accommodate underground mobility; in fact, twin roll sizers leave room for improvement in many aspects of the design. The DRC1200 capitalizes on the weaknesses of these machines to make a more productive, easily maintained, and compact twin roll sizer than current market offerings. These strides were made through the inception of the Hard Rock Extraction System (HRXS), which requires a mobile sizer as part of the system. After use of a third party sizer on the HRXS, potential improvements were evident. These improvements include improved structural design to reduce overall footprint and an optimized design to reduce operating cost.

Bureau of Mines researchers developed and tested equipment to measure corrosion rates on a commercial-scale mill. Bench-scale experiments were designed for duplicating ore grinding conditions closely enough that realistic rate determinations can be made in laboratory tests. Rates measured in a laboratory system compared favorably with those measured in the field. Cast steel was found to have corrosion rates in a copper mill and laboratory test cell of 22 and 21 mpy, respectively. Corrosion was found to account for less than 5 pct of the total grinding media wear in the operations studied.

Western Australia is the largest state in Australia with an area one and three quarter times the size of Texas. Most of the State is desert or semi-desert, and only the southwest corner is heavily populated. The State has a population of one and a half million people, and one million of these live in and around the city of Perth. Perth is located on the narrow Swan Coastal Plain and is flanked by the Indian Ocean and the Darling Plateau. The Darling Plateau is an ancient peneplain rising some 300 metres above sea level, and forms an important resource base for the population.

"The City of Ottawa’s Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel consists of two interconnected tunnels totaling 6.2 km with a diameter of 3m including access shafts and hydraulic structures which connect to the City’s most critical sewers. This tunnel will be built 15m to 30m below ground in the downtown core adjacent to, and crossing below, the Light Rail Tunnel, which introduces additional considerations in terms of sequencing and risk mitigation. The City embarked on a unique Procurement Process to address the risks involved with a large tunnel project and those associated with tunneling below downtown, underneath and adjacent to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and connecting to live critical sewers. This paper describes the unique procurement approach employed and the contractual risk mitigation measures developed to provide the best value while minimizing risk. Specific features include Market Sounding, using a Fairness Commissioner, Contractor Prequalification and Risk Mitigation Measures in the Tender documents. INTRODUCTION This paper describes how the City of Ottawa (the City) and the project design team developed a strategic Procurement Process and Tender that incorporated industry best practices for technical and contractual risk management for the Combined Sewage Storage Tunnel (CSST) project. The process was unique in that, while it employed a systematic review of project risks, it also solicited input from industry, stakeholders and provincial and federal partners to develop the request for Tender for this traditional design-bid-build project. Key drivers for this approach were initiated from the City’s concerns for cost control, cost certainty and overall project risk mitigation. To address these concerns, the City implemented the risk review and mitigation process right from the project design team selection. It was critical that the project design team embraced this risk management philosophy and carried it through each phase of the project. This paper serves as an excellent resource for municipalities or other owners embarking on a similar tunnel project, on how to properly apply industry best practices and the benefits of using them."

The Zurichberg twin track tunnel is the main segment of the Swiss Federal Railway's new expressline. A heavy concrete lining with a circular cross-section was chosen to cope with the swelling tendency of the surrounding rock. The 4,356 m (14,300 ft) long, 11.52 m (38 ft) diameter tunnel was driven using a shielded Robbins TBM. A 1.20 m (4 ft) wide, 25 cm (10 in) thick precast lining was placed from within the shield tail as the excavation progressed. Tunnel excavation and initial lining operation were completed in 18 months, averaging 11.86 m/day (40 ft/day) in two nine hour shifts. After breaking through, the final 28 cm (11 in) thick concrete arch lining was cast in place.

Over the past few years the rising production costs, shortage of skilled labor, and increased use of lower grade ore bodies have all added justification for the use of on-stream analysis. A rise in the number of on-stream units indicates that this type of assay is now being accepted as a necessity. On-stream analysis is a much more rapid means of obtaining true assays of a flowing product when compared to wet chemistry or "grab" samples dried, briquetted and assayed by x-ray. In contrast, on-stream analysis uses real time samples assayed every 30 seconds while each stream is assayed every 5 to 15 minutes. It is very important not only to know that a change has occurred in the process, but to know what caused the change and how to correct for the change. For example, in a tailing sample the elements of interest comprise between 1% and 10% of the sample. The remainder is water and gangue. Previously the gangue was not assayed nor were the low atomic number elements used for corrections. In addition to the demand for higher accuracies some concentrators were being penalized for excessive Ca or in some cases 5i in their concentrates. This penalty was being imposed by the smelter in order that they could better cope with pollution problems and prolong the life of their furnaces. But until Ca, 5i, and S are measured on-line, nothing can be done about their control. By accurately measuring these light elements on-line, a complete assay is obtained of the total sample providing improved accuracy for the important products. The justification for complete accuracy assays is now even more obvious because they are possible at very 1ittle increased cost and at no increase in analytical time.

System simulation is an increasingly popular technique for analyzing and improving existing as well as newly designed underground mining operations. An engineering firm that specializes in simulation helped a major metals producer build a long-range planning model of an existing underground mine. Subsequently the team adapted this model to assess technology alternatives in the design of a new mine. The two models differ in the level of detail used for modeling the development process. This paper discusses the differences in approach between the models along with the experiences gained and challenges faced during the construction and use of the models.

You here are all familar with the myriad of new laws, some enacted and some pending, that affect the mining industry. These laws, for example those dealing with suspended matter, affect us in Alaska as they do you. Likewise, our friends in government, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines, provide us with the same fine services that they do elsewhere. I am not going to speak today about these, but concentrate on one act of Washington, D.C. the impact of which is felt, for now at least, principally in Alaska. A little more than a year ago, I spoke in Spokane on the subject, "Governmental Challenge to Mineral Development in Alaska." I outlined some of the policies of Government which were operating to change the rules under which the industry operates and to alter the relation- ship between government, industry, and the individual. At that time the Native Claims Settlement Act had not been passed, but was on the verge of being so. In reading over what I said in Spokane, I note that I touched on many points where Government was actually challenging mineral development in Alaska. With the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, many of these actions were given a cloak of legality, and machinery was set up to concentrate the drive to tie up the public domain, machinery which will allow govern- mental control and interference with the actions of individuals on something like 90% of Alaska's land surface. This remarkable law is going to affect each and every one of you. Now, a year after its passage, we are only just beginning to see its lesson for the future. It was created by a coalition of powerful groups, who got other groups to support them by promising to deliver something they had no intention of delivering. Alaskan issues are again being used to get various groups not to oppose legislation which will severely harm them. It will help to understand the nature of this new drive if we understand the Native Claims Act and how it came into being.

The concept of using water-only cyclones as a clean coal scalping device preceding a heavy media cyclone circuit shows considerable promise, as it can considerably reduce the feed to the heavy media cyclone circuit. The system will not perform as well as a heavy media cyclone circuit alone, but the resultant loss in yield is small and may be negligible under some conditions. The concept of water-only cyclone scalping has previously been suggested by others. By reducing the amount of raw coal to be processed in the more expensive circuits overall capital and operating costs may be reduced. There are a few commercial plants with circuits operating on this concept. In the Warwick and Rowland plants water-only cyclones are used to scalp the feed to a heavy media vessel and Deister tables respectively while Amherst Coal Company's McGregor plant uses them to scalp the feed to a heavy media cyclone circuit. The system was evaluated on a technical basis, both from a theoretical viewpoint and by analysis of a computer simulation, in order to gain a fuller understanding of its usefulness and limitations.

The development of a metallurgical project is a business venture rather than a technical exercise, and its real objective is to obtain the maximum return on investment consistent with the limitations imposed by company policy and the requirements of society. Demand for profits is the driving force for technical advances and naturally leads to improvements in processes, equipment and plant designs. In the mineral dressing field there have been virtually no new processes developed since the introduction of flotation, and the steady erosion of profits by inflation has been offset only by increasing equipment size. Unfortunately, in recent years, plant designers have not always utilized the largest equipment or the opportunities for functional and economic design presented by the development of larger equipment. Lower cost plants can be developed providing that unrealistic restraints arising from the prejudice of past practices are avoided. As an illustration of this premise, three different approaches were taken toward the design of a clearly delineated but hypothetical copper concentrator of 20, 000 tons per day capacity. While the same flowsheet was used in each case, designs were produced for a conventional plant, an alternate using the largest available equipment, and a third scheme utilizing large equipment and the most functional design which could be developed, including features derived from many plants in many different industries. Capital costs were developed for the three separate designs based on a location in the southwestern United States. Ancillary facilities were identical in each case and included a mine truck shop, a maintenance shop, a general office, and a nominal starter dam for tailings disposal within 5000 feet of the plant. Water supply within 1000 feet of the plant, and power furnished to the property boundary has been assumed in each case. The flowsheet of the three plants is shown in Figure 1 and represents the treatment of a typical sulfide copper ore by three- stage crushing followed by single-stage ball milling. Concentration is by flotation roughing and scavenging followed by regrinding of the concentrates and two stages of cleaning.

There have been many improvements and advancements in the application of neural networks in the mining industry. In this study, two advanced deep learning neural networks called recurrent neural network (RNN) and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) were implemented in the simulation and prediction of limestone price variation. The RNN uses long shortterm memory layers (LSTM), dropout regularization, activation functions, mean square error (MSE), and the Adam optimizer to simulate the predictions. The LSTM stores previous data over time and uses it in simulating future prices based on defined parameters and algorithms. The ARIMA model is a statistical method that captures different time series based on the level, trend, and seasonality of the data. The auto ARIMA function searches for the best parameters that fit the model. Different layers and parameters are added to the model to simulate the price prediction. The performance of both network models is remarkable in terms of trend variability and factors affecting limestone price. The ARIMA model has an accuracy of 95.7% while RNN has an accuracy of 91.8%. This shows that the ARIMA model outperforms the RNN model. In addition, the time required to train the ARIMA is than that of the RNN. Predicting limestone prices may help both investors and industries in making economical and technical decisions, for example, when to invest, buy, sell, increase, and decrease production.

INTRODUCTION Good ventilation bulkheads (stoppings) can be obtained only by conscientiously adhering to four basic principles: carefully selecting the site for the bulkhead, adequately preparing the site, properly constructing and sealing the bulkhead, and checking the results with a smoke tube before leaving the area. If all these guidelines are followed during each ventilation project, a poor job will result only from the use of improper materials and cannot be blamed on carelessness or oversight. SITE SELECTION A perfectly constructed bulkhead in the wrong location can be completely worthless. Conceivably, a bulk-head in the wrong location could cause dangerous ventilation conditions that are difficult to identify and isolate. If the suggestions herein are followed, a considerable amount of work, time, and material may be saved. Perhaps the single most important step is always to select the exact site for a bulkhead before starting construction. Although the latitude in selecting a site may be limited by instructions or operating conditions, it is common to find poor bulkheads built within a few meters (feet) of a site that would have been far superior but was overlooked during the planning process. The ideal site for a bulkhead should have as many of the following features and conditions as possible: 1) To provide a solid bulkhead, the selected site should be in firm and unbroken ground. 2) To minimize the amount of work and material required and to minimize the danger of later damage to the bulkhead, the site should have as small a cross section as possible. 3) The bulkhead site should not be encumbered by interferences such as pipes, wires, ditches, wire roof supports, trash, muck piles, etc. 4) The walls and timbers of the site should be free from oil, grease, or tar that would inhibit adhesion of the sealant used on the bulkhead. 5) Unless special precautions are taken, the site should not have water seepage, standing water on the floor, or water-carrying ditches. 6) To expedite construction of the bulkhead, the site should have reasonable access to transportation, supplies, communication facilities, and compressed-air lines. 7) The site should have a reasonably level floor, allowing direction of the bulkhead door swing to be reversed at a later time if so desired. In a steeply sloping location, it may be possible to open the door in one direction only. SITE PREPARATION Once a suitable site has been selected for the bulk¬head, it must be prepared properly. All site preparation work should be completed before starting any construction work on the stopping itself. Unfavorable site conditions can be identified during the course of thepreliminary site preparation, saving time, effort, and materials that otherwise might be wasted. The follow¬ing preparation steps help assure the construction of a good stopping: 1) If wire mesh has been used at the site, a strip 457 mm (18 in.) wide should be cut and removed from the walls and roof at the selected location. 2) The exposed strip of rock should be barred down thoroughly to provide a smooth surface. 3) All obstructing materials should be removed, including old timbers, pipes, rockbolts, wires, etc. If a conduit must cross the bulkhead area, it should be located or relocated away from the floor, walls, and roof to allow a 6.28-rad (360°) seal around the juncture between the conduit and the bulkhead structure. 4) All loose muck should be cleaned from the site and a trench about 152 mm (6 in.) deep should be dug from wall to wall in the floor. The trench must be wide enough to accommodate the entire bulkhead, including the posts. 5) The rock surfaces of the walls and roof should be cleaned with a wire brush to remove as much loose surface material as possible. Thorough cleaning promotes adhesion of the bulkhead sealant to the surfaces of the walls and roof, thus promoting an airtight seal. 6) It is quite difficult to seal landing mats that cross a bulkhead. If such a crossing cannot be avoided, the bulkhead should be placed between the end and the first hole in the steel so at least one side of the bulk-head can be sealed easily and completely. That may have to be done prior to actual construction if the end is located on the opposite face from the seal coating of the bulkhead. BULKHEAD CONSTRUCTION The three principal considerations in bulkhead con¬struction are the type of bulkhead, materials to be used, and construction method to be employed. For many projects, the bulkheads are specified by the requesting agency, with no latitude for independent choice of the type, materials, or construction method. In such cases, any deviations from the specifications, for any reason, must be approved in advance by the proper department or by the project senior ventilation engineer. Types and Materials When a choice of type, materials, or method is allowed, consideration should be given to factors such as cost, required useful life, proximity to blasting concus¬sions, availability of materials, direction of permissible air leakage, and degree of airtightness required. Other factors to be considered include the amount of time available, accessibility of transportation, potential for interference with operations or production, ambient water conditions, availability of connections to com¬pressed-air lines, etc. Despite the multitude of factors to be considered, most stoppings can be analyzed easily and the proper choices can be made without much difficulty. Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a common water pollution problem on active and abandoned coal mine sites in the eastern United States. AMD forms when surface mining brings unweathered pyrite-containing rocks to the surface or when deep mining allows oxygen to contact buried pyritic strata. In the absence of neutralizing compounds, the drainage that results can be extremely acidic and contaminated with dissolved iron, manganese, and sulfate. Drainages with pH < 3.0 and concentrations of sulfate greater than 1,000 mg/L, iron greater than 50 mg/L, and manganese greater than 10 mg/L are common. Where water flows through alkaline materials (such as limestone) before surfacing, the drainage is less acidic and occasionally circumneutral, but it can still contain high concentrations of sulfate and metals. Current water quality standards in the United States require that mine discharges have a pH between 6 and 9, total iron concentration less than 3.0 mg/L, and manganese less than 2.0 mg/L. At thousands of active and inactive mine sites, drainage does not meet these standards and is being treated before discharge by the mining company. At thousands of other sites, which were abandoned prior to the enactment of water pollution laws or were operated by companies that have gone bankrupt, untreated AMD is polluting receiving water systems. The standard mine drainage treatment system involves the addition of a1 kal ine chemicals to the water, which raises the pH and cause metals to precipitate in a settling pond. These systems are expensive, often costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per year for chemicals, operation, maintenance, and disposal of the metal- laden sludge. Because the drainage on many sites will likely be contaminated for decades, there is financial incentive to find alternative water treatment systems. In the last five years, many mining companies and engineering firms have experimented with the construction of wetland treatment systems. Very few of the several hundred wetland systems that have been built are performing well enough to justify total abandonment of chemical treatment. Nonetheless, systems continue to be built because the mining companies have found that wetlands can reduce their AMD treatment costs. It is also their hope that further research and development will eventually result in systems that will completely rep1 ace chemical treatment and offer long term performance at minimal cost. The Bureau of Mines has been actively involved, from a research perspective, with this approach to AMD treatment since its inception. In this paper, the status of constructed wetland technology is discussed with respect to the construction and performance of systems, chemical and biological processes that affect AMD chemistry within constructed wetlands, and the future of this technology as perceived by the Bureau of Mines. ORIGINAL OBSERVATIONS The constructed wetland concept has its roots in observations of natural Sphaqnum peat wetlands that received acid mine drainage and, instead of being adversely affected, appeared to cause an amelioration of the polluted water (Huntsman et al. 1978; Wieder and Lang 1982). These observations instigated the idea that wet1 and systems might be used for the intentional treatment of mine drainage. Because the discharge of AMD into a natural wetland is prohibited in the U.S. by several laws, it has been necessary to construct wetlands which act solely as water treatment systems. Initially, most wetland research and construction efforts mimicked the original observations by utilizing Sphaqnum moss and peat. Despite promising laboratory results (Kleinmann et al. 1983; Tarleton et al. 1984; Burris et al. 1984; Gerber et al. 1985), virtually all field tests of Sphasnum-dominated constructed wetlands failed to provide sufficient water treatment for more than several months.
