The results of column leaching tests on 3 different mixed oxide/sulfide ores from a Chilean deposit are presented. The 3 samples contained different ratios of oxide copper minerals to chalcocite and chalcopyrite. The results of the column leach tests are interpreted in light of the shrinking core model for coarse particle leaching. The copper recovery from the oxide minerals and the sulfide minerals each conforms to the shrinking core model with the total recovery equal to the weighted average of the individual minerals. The use of column test results to predict field heap leaching results using the multi-mineral shrinking core model is discussed.

The Cripple Creek diatreme-intrusive complex is known primarily for its vein telluride-gold ores and, for major veins, their great vertical range (>990m). Less well-documented are the ores dispersed into the wallrocks adjacent to veins, the ores associated with hydrothermal and tectonic breccias, or mineralized zones within fluvial, lacustrine, and volcaniclastic rocks deposited within the diatreme complex. The ore-gangue minerals Here precipitated from oxidized, alkaline fluids that yielded an abundance of carbonate, sulfate, and oxide minerals along with minor base metal sulfide and precious metal telluride-s. Wallrock alteration is quite limited adjacent to veins and somewhat more extensive within hydrothermal and tectonic breccias.

Many Latin American countries are facing a scarcity of water. As such, infrastructure decisions are quite different from those made in parts of the world that experience a positive water balance. In the latter case, the water treatment approach tends to be ?treat and discharge.? For Latin American regions facing the challenges that go with a negative water balance, the focus is on resource optimization and reuse. Historically, the water challenge has had a significant impact on economic development in Latin America, especially in sectors such as mining, where water usage is high. At the same time, countries such as Chile and Brazil are major development targets for mining and oil and gas operations. Given the water supply challenge, industry is increasingly turning to technologies and processes that maximize water recovery and reuse. With sulfide precipitation and ion exchange water treatment processes for example, it is possible to treat and recover more than 99 percent of water for reuse onsite. These technologies have been applied successfully in other regions of the world where water conservation practices are essential to economic survival.

This paper presents a kinematic approach for blast modeling with examples of blast models that were developed previously. A kinematic approach was applied successfully in developing blasting models that can simulate all blast design parameters for field applications. Several applied blasting models have been developed and applied widely in the world. A kinematic approach to blast modeling refers to using measurements of kinematic quantities such as the velocity, strain, or displacement and well-established assumptions to model blasting phenomena, rather than being restricted to use first principal of physics, such as, the stress- and material-constitutive relations. The kinematic quantities are easy to measure in the field. Due to the complexity and inhomogeneity of rock mass properties, using first principles of physics, many parameters of rock and explosive properties must be involved, which are hard or impossible to quantify. This creates a major impediment when trying to simulate the total process of blasting based upon first principles of physics. The 3D kinematic model for muckpile formation was developed and applied to open pit blasts. The multiple blasthole fragmentation model developed during recent years has been applied successfully to many mine sites around the globe. These models are typical examples of blast modeling using the kinematic approach, which enables the models to catch major trends of the blasting process and explicitly simulate full blast design parameters and complex geometries. Blast modeling using the kinematic approach results in easy model calibration and validation against field measurements and effective applications to practical problems. Using kinematic models of the muckpile formation and the multiple blasthole fragmentation model, this paper demonstrates the merits of the kinematic approach for blast modeling. New developments of the models were also presented in the paper, which illustrate the potential of the kinematic modelling approach.

Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel, called Straight Creek Tunnel during construction is located 60 miles west of Denver, Colorado at 11, 160 ft. elevation. It is 8, 510 feet long, and carries two lanes of 1-70 traffic under the Continental Divide. This paper describes improvements and changes made in construction methods for utilities, concrete lining, ceiling, wall covering and paving to allow maximum offsite fabrication and activity overlap resulting in a one-year faster completion for traffic. The substantial changes proposed on a design-and-construct basis by the contractor and put into effect after State approval were: 1. Substitution of ductile iron and thick-wall P.V. C. pipes for clay pipes allowing placement and operation before hole-thru. 2. Outside pre-assembly of large rebar mats, using a novel tension-splice with cable clamps. 3. Arch concrete placement method modified to make 4, 322 ft. of lining in 10 weeks possible. 4. Safety barriers precast and epoxy coated offsite instead of cast-in-place and tile faced. 5. Prestressed hollow ceiling slabs with porcelainenamel coated steel sheets assembled offsite, instead of in-place glazed tile and in-place cast concrete ceiling. 6. Glazed tile wall panels 8 ft. long by 11 ft. high assembled off site and erected using vacuum pad mounted on special lift. 7. Asphalt paving while other work proceeded, instead of reinforced concrete slab and asphalt overlay. Work started in January 1968, but advance came to a one-year standstill for major structural redesign and negotiations of a new agreement during 1970. Using multiple drift construction followed by top-heading and bench excavation, it then progressed to hole-thru in July 1972. As a result of art 18-month overlap of activities the tunnel was opened for traffic only eight months later in March 1973. Gibbons and Reed Company of Salt Lake City, Utah sponsored the joint Venture of Al Johnson-Gibbons and Reed-Western Paving-Kemper during 1971, 1972, and 1973. The tunnel was the subject of a previous paper delivered at the RETC '72 in Chicago by R. C. Hopper, T. A. Lang, and A. A. Mathews, describing geology, unusually severe structural loading and multiple-drift tunnel excavation.

INTRODUCTION This chapter outlines some general principles and procedures that a rock mechanics engineer can use to arrive at a logical design for the size, shape, and spacings of underground openings in various types of com¬petent rock formations. Rock formations can be clas¬sified into six major categories which are useful for design purposes, provided the necessary input data are available regarding the geology of the site, the physical properties of the rock, the in-situ stress field in the rock, and the general geometry of the underground openings. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed a rock classification system based upon these concepts and found it to be useful for design purposes (Obert, et al., 1960; Obert and Duvall, 1967). This classification sys¬tem is given in Table 1; however, an extra column has been added to the original classification to indicate the appropriate design techniques for each rock class. In this classification system, two main classes of rock are considered: competent rock and incompetent rock. Competent Rock Competent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geological characteristics, is capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of any structural support except that provided by unmined rock in the form of pillars and side walls, etc. Roof bolts and small random props which support only local loose rock are not considered structural supports. Competent rock is further subdivided into three ad¬ditional categories-massive, laminated, and jointed¬ which are defined as follows: Massive Rock: Massive rock is a rock formation where the spacing between mechanical defects such as joints, partings, or faults is equal to or greater than the critical dimensions of openings, or where the strength of the bond across these mechanical defects is com¬parable to the rock strength. Laminated Rock: Laminated rock is a rock forma¬tion divided by approximately parallel planes of weak¬ness into lamina whose thicknesses are small compared to critical dimensions of openings and where the bond between the lamina is weak compared to the rock strength. Elastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties will permit the use of elastic theory to predict strains and displacements from applied stresses. Inelastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties are such that strains and displacements are a strong function of time as well as applied stress. Incompetent Rock Incompetent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geologic characteristics, is not capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of additional structural support in the form of linings, steel sets, or systems of props. This classification system for rock depends not only on the mechanical and geologic characteristics of the rock but on the size of openings and their depth be¬low the surface. For example, many competent rocks at shallow depths for small stress fields could become inelastic rock at greater depths and larger stress fields, or competent massive rock for small openings could be¬come laminated or jointed rock for larger openings. Thus, to classify rock for design purposes requires a knowledge of the geologic properties of the rock mass, the physical properties of the rock, the general size of the openings to be mined, and the average range of the in-situ stress field to be encountered. To design underground openings and structures in rock, it is necessary to use criteria of failure for rock under various stress conditions, and to use safety factors to allow for differences between laboratory and in-situ strength properties of rock and to account for errors in¬troduced by the various assumptions made in the design process. Criteria of failure based on maximum stresses have been found to give reliable results in practice. Thus, it is assumed that rock will fail in tension when the tensile stress exceeds the tensile strength of the rock as determined by a standard modulus of rupture test on samples of rock core. If the tensile stresses in rock are small, then it is assumed that the rock will fail at a value of compressive stress equal to the compressive strength of the rock as determined by standard uniaxial compres¬sive strength tests on samples of rock core. Direct force measurements were conducted using an atomic force microscope (AFM) to study the mechanism of copper-activation of sphalerite. The force measurements were conducted between a sphalerite plate and a hydrophobic glass sphere in xanthate solutions of various pHs. The glass sphere may represent the hydrophobic air bubbles interacting with minerals during flotation. The force measurements conducted with unactivated sphalerite in 10') M KEX solutions did not show the presence of hydrophobic force. On the other hand, the results obtained with copper-activated sphalerite at pH 9.2 and 4.6 showed strong hydrophobic forces. However, the results obtained at pH 6.8 showed no evidence of hydrophobic force, which provides an explanation for the difficulty in floating sphalerite at neutral pH.

On April 14, 1975, Consolidation Coal Company began to operate a longwall face in their Shoemaker Mine using shield supports. This was the first time that shield supports were used in the United States (1) 1/. Shortly thereafter, Kaiser Steel Corporation started a shield longwall face at their York Canyon Mine (2). From October 1975 through May 1976, three more longwall faces were commissioned in mines located in south-western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. In June 1976, four installations had completed their first panel and two installations had completed the subsequent move to the second panel where coal production is now well under way. During this time (April 75 to June 76) the total number of shield support face operating months, including moving time, was 40 and the combined face advance was approx. 17, 000 feet (5200 m) with face lengths varying from 450 - 550 feet (137 - 168 m). While the shield support experience in the U.S. is still limited on the basis of time and mining parameters, the operating results of all faces have been very satisfactory. New record 24 hr production figures were set and - far more important - long term production figures could be sustained on an impressively high level even when taking face moving time into account. The purpose of this paper is to review the performance of shield type supports in the U.S. and to assess their value as longwall supports for U.S. underground mining conditions with regard to roof control, maintenance, operator convenience, safety and productivity.

EPA's Office of Solid Waste (OSW) is developing a program, under Subtitle D of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to regulate the management of non-coal mining wastes. In May 1988. OSW produced a "Strawman", which is a working document that is precursor to a proposed rule. OSW has been working closely with environmental groups, industry, and States to solicit comments and feedback on the mining waste program. OSW currently plans to release a second "Strawman" in early 1990. A proposed rule is tentatively scheduled to be published in the spring of 1991.

The loading characteristics of gold-tetrabromide species onto activated carbon have been evaluated using a completely mixed batch reactor system. The overall loading of gold onto carbon was rapid for the first hour but continued slowly without cessation as a result of reduction of gold. Conventional equilibrium considerations were therefore not applicable. Although loading continued slowly after several days, abnormally high loading capacity values of 10-12 meq/g carbon (650-800 kgAu/tonne) could be attained within 72 hours. The loading of gold-bromo species by activated carbon was by the mass transfer of [AuBr4l-onto the carbon surface where reduction to metallic gold took place. Elution of gold from the loaded carbon was feasible provided the carbon had not been loaded to too high capacity values. If loading is carried to high levels, complete elution becomes impractical and the gold may be recovered by ashing the carbon. For the high loading capacities observed, this option would appear to be cost effective. The effect of several variables on the loading capacity of the activated carbon is discussed.

Although safety and skills training has long been recognized as an essential element for reducing injuries and improving productivity, the research literature lacks definitive reports documenting the specific value of such training. The training literature presents a variety of testimonials as to the "benefits of training," but lacks data that specifically tie that training to the performance of the worker.

In a 2007 report to the U.S. Congress, the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH OMSHR) stated that built-in-place refuge alternatives (BIP RAs) provide significant advantages over mobile refuge alternatives. At present, the requirement to locate refuge alternatives within 305 m (1,000 ft) of working faces makes BIP RAs impractical in most coal mines. BIP RAs would be practical if three issues are addressed: (1) allowing BIP RAs to be located at greater distances from the working face, (2) developing a reliable process for the design and approval of BIP RA stoppings that meet the 0.1-MPa (15-psi) design criteria, and (3) developing systems that reliably deliver breathable air to the refuge alternative. In 2015, NIOSH OMSHR conducted a study of these three issues and issued a report. In the report, justification was provided for allowing the placement of BIP RAs at greater distances from the working face than the currently mandated 305 m (1,000 ft), guidelines were developed that could be used by industry when submitting BIP RA stopping design applications for approval which are patterned after the Mine Safety and Health Administration guidelines for coal mine seal design applications, and insights were provided into options for providing a reliable supply of clean, breathable air to BIP RAs. This paper presents a summary of the study’s findings and also addresses issues discovered during the building and designing of a BIP RA that OMSHR researchers constructed in NIOSH’s Experimental Coal Mine in Pittsburgh to research the testing and improving of BIP RAs. These issues include several issues related to the delivery, distribution and exhaust of ventilation air to the BIP RA and some general construction issues that require further investigation.

This paper will review the procedure of selecting optimum wire rope constructions for these existing hoisting installations. Selection for proposed installations along with recommended hoisting parameters will also be presented. To achieve this optimum rope performance, preventative and corrective maintenance procedures will be reviewed along with examples of rope problems and their causes.

The Lime Creek* ore body in northwestern British Columbia is one of the few commercial primary stockwork-type molybdenite deposits in North America. Others include the Climax, Urad-Henderson, Questa, and Endako ore bodies. They are mined on a low grade-high tonnage basis, and are open pit operations except for Climax and Urad-Henderson. Much recent geochemical research on both porphyry copper and stockwork MoS2 deposits has been concerned with dating of micas related to the mineralization and associated igneous rocks. The results appear to show that mineralization and the predominant magmatic events of the deposit are indistinguishable in age (1-5), except where dating has been in sufficient detail to resolve the analytical overlap (6). At Lime Creek, geologic information shows that the Main granodiorite, the major intrusive and dominant host rock for MoS2 mineralization, was emplaced and had solidified sometime prior to the introduction of MoS2. The first MoS2 episode is intimately related to localized bodies of kalialaskite which clearly intrude the older stock. K-Ar dating was undertaken to clarify the age relations between Lime Creek plutonism and the apparently younger hydrothermal event that began with kalialaskite.

Two mineral processing facilities in North America required near terminal density slurries to perform de-bottle necking in their circuits. The installation at Barrick Goldstrike to ensure efficient oxidation conditions and throughputs in the refractory ore treating autoclaves. The Kidd Metallurgical Division unit to provide a steeper tailings slope to extend the life of the existing tailings dam. To achieve these goals, both operations selected a Supaflo "High Compression" Thickener following on site pilot plant evaluation. Commissioning and the first year of operation is reviewed. Operating data is compared with the pilot plant data. In particular, unusual doughnut formation at Goldstrike and the effect of temperature on the terminal density at Kidd Metallurgical Division are discussed.

Over the last three years there has been an increase in mining congress and conferences focusing on water management. Water in mining is a key concern for mine managers and operations, and we are now seeing this operational dilemma escalated to the level it deserves. According to Frost & Sullivan research, mining water and wastewater treatment and its related technologies will be a U$3.6 Billion global market in 2016, which translates the importance of this issue. Looking at the current mining trends, some factors increased the importance of water in mining operations, including: ? Future mining investments will be located in geographical locations where water is scarce (water stressed areas) ? A decline in grade will increase the intensity of mineral processes and therefore increase the use of the water ? Increased sustainability and regulations will extend the control/monitoring of water during the entire mine life cycle representation of the mine water flow system. Any city dweller who has walked alone along a remote mine passageway has to be impressed by the eerie silence - the total absence of noise except for ones own breathing and scuffing of boots on the bottom. An underground mine can have tremendous contrasts, from complete silence to the ear piercing clatter of percussion drills working on the mine roof. Noise in underground mining machines is both useful and detrimental. Without characteristic noises that are recognizable to miners, operators would have a more difficult job operating their machines. Noise serves as a warning of approaching machinery, and changes in noise give indication that breakdowns may occur. But excessive noise is a health hazard. In recognition of this fact, our Congress included noise exposure as a part of the "Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969". As Fig. 1 indicates, allowable noise exposure is established by specifying a time duration permitted at different noise levels. This is the well known "Walsh-Healey" criteria which governs noise exposure in many industries.

The sorptive and impervious nature of clay materials was recognized long before modem technology allowed us to understand the physiochemistry of clays. In Cyprus, around 5000 BC, sorbent clays were used for fulling woolen cloth. One of the earliest recorded uses of clays as an impervious liner was more than 3200 years ago in the construction of a bitumen-sand-gravel-clay liner built along the embankment of the Tigris River at Assur. Today one of the most common applications for clay minerals in the environmental industry is for use as impermeable barriers to fluid transport. Clay minerals are fine in particle size and thus have large surface areas, which, as a result of intermolecular forces and ionic substitutions, make them excellent materials for both ion exchange and ion sorption. Therefore it was logical to consider certain clay materials for applications in the environmental industry, where they can act as physical and chemical traps for potential contaminants. Certain bentonites have historically been used as sealants for fluids (Grim, 1962), and other clays have been used as sorbents for both water and oil (Haden, Jr., 1972). Prior to the 1980s, disposal of the nation's municipal, commercial, chemical, and nuclear wastes was largely indiscriminate and poorly regulated. This created environmental pollution problems, especially with respect to groundwater contamination. Promulgation of federal regulations like the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA - commonly known as Superfund) have forced a more careful and costly approach to waste disposal. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the government body charged with enforcing and ensuring compliance with federal regulations governing toxic waste production, storage, and disposal. Widespread application of geotechnology to the design and construction of waste containment systems and to pollution remediation has become necessary due to such laws and because of increasing use of the subsurface environment for the disposal of hazardous wastes. In the United States nearly 1.8 kg of trash is disposed of per person per day, which amounts to nearly 181 Mt per year. This amount is more than double the waste produced in 1960, and these numbers are expected to continue to increase. Canada produces approximately 1.68 kg of waste per person per day. The EPA estimates that in the United States 64% of our garbage is landfilled, 18% recycled, and 18% incinerated. Even with continued increases in recycling and incineration efforts, the EPA projects that the United States will still need 82% of today's landfill capacity in the year 2000. Data on the exact number of landfills in the United States and Canada is conflicting in part because of changing definitions of what constitutes a landfill and because of inadequate record- keeping by some states and provinces. An estimate of the number of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in the United States in 1990 to 1991 ranged from 4 462 to 10 467 with an average estimate of 6 600. In Canada the number of MSW landfills reported varied from 5 493 in a 1982 survey to 1 766 reported in a 1991 National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) survey (Repa and Sheets, 1992b). A properly operated MSW landfill on average requires 1 hectare of land per year per 25 000 people (Coates, 198 1). In addition to MSW facilities, there are also waste disposal facilities needed for hazardous waste and low level and high level radioactive waste. In 1983, approximately 266 Mt of hazardous waste was generated in the United States, almost 50% of this by industrial production. About 68% of the hazardous waste generated in the United States and Canada and almost 50% generated in Europe are still landfilled (Egger, 1987). In 1985, approximately 51 000 m3 of commercially produced low level radioactive waste was disposed of in radioactive waste disposal sites across the United States (Jungling and Greeves, 1989). By 1987, the US defense program had produced approximately 10 000 t of high level nuclear waste. In addition, there were approximately 14 000 t of spent fuel assemblies from commercial nuclear power plants in temporary storage; the amount is expected to nearly triple by the year 2000. Presently most commercial spent fuel assemblies are stored in water-filled pools at nuclear power plants. Defense waste is stored on federal reservations in surface and underground steel tanks (Anon., 1987). Under federal law nearly all waste disposal and containment sites are required to have a liner or barrier and a cover system design that meets federal- or state-approved hydraulic conductivity requirements for the type of waste that the site will receive. When approved materials, necessary for constructing the waste containment structure, are not available on site, one of the most economical ways to meet these requirements is through the use of clay, soil/clay, or clay/geotextile materials. In a 1991 survey by NSWMA of its members and other select private sector facilities, 81% of the surveyed landfills had some type of liner system. About 75% of these liners were clay materials (either recompacted or natural). The remaining 30% were using flexible membrane liners as part of a liner system. Clay liner materials are most commonly used in the South, Midwest, West-central, and South-central regions of the United States. About 93% of the landfill facilities had closure plans, and of these 91 % were using clay materials in some way for the final cover material (Repa and Sheets, 1992a). Waste barriers and containment structures take several basic forms, and they are used in a variety of different applications: 1) cutoff walls, 2) soil or soil/clay-admix liners, 3) geosynthetic bentonite-clay/geotextile membranes, 4) radioactive waste containment barriers, and 5) synthetic geomembranes. "In the present work, we investigate the effects of roasting temperature and time on the transformation of the titanium (Ti)-bearing phase and magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) phase in Ti-bearing electric arc furnace molten slag during the molten sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treatment process. With applied temperature of 700 °C for 60 min, and a mass ratio of Ti-bearing electric arc furnace slag to NaOH, or Rslag/NaOH, of 1:1.2, the conversion ratios of the Ti-bearing phase and the MgAl2O4 phase reached about 98.3 percent and 88.1 percent, respectively. Moreover, investigation of the reaction kinetics indicate that the conversion of these phases during the molten NaOH treatment process is a typical solid-liquid reaction, and it can be theoretically described by the unreacted shrinking core model. The conversion ratio of the Ti-bearing phase was found to be controlled by the chemical reaction step, with an apparent activation energy of 41.76 kJ/mol. The decomposition of the MgAl2O4 phase was found to be controlled by the surface chemical reaction in the early stage of 0 to 20 min from start of reaction, changing to diffusion control in the later stage of 20 to 60 min. The problem of how to dispose of the Ti-bearing slag has attracted much attention, and various approaches have been developed, including the acid process (Li et al., 2007; Zhang et al., 2011; Zhang and Nicol, 2010; Li et al., 2011), alkali fusion process (Han et al., 2012; Middlemas, Fang and Fan, 2013; Nayl, Awwad and Aly, 2009; Lasheen, 2008; Zhang, Qi and Zhang, 2009), carbonization and chlorination process (Liu et al., 2008; Tao et al., 2012; Fu et al., 2012; Liu, 2009), selective crystallization process (Lei and Xue, 2008; Li et al., 2011; Zhang et al., 2007a, 2007b). However, these processes have been beset by various functional, economical and ecological problems (Yu and Chen, 2010). With environmental protection regulations becoming increasingly rigorous, and demand growing for the comprehensive utilization of resources, the focus is on methods to treat Ti-bearing slag with high efficiency and mild reaction conditions (Nazari and Riahi, 2011; Wu et al., 2013)."
