In order to overcome our reliance upon foreign energy sources for both crude supply and finished products, we must realize the goals proposed by Project Independence. In general this involves expanding production of existing and new oil, gas, and coal resources, utilizing and improving nuclear technology and the developing of new energy sources such as solar, geothermal, oil shale, tidal, wind and stimulation techniques. There is a continuing debate, both in the scientific community and the consuming public as to the potentiality of nuclear power generation being cost effective and environmentally and safety conscious. The development of new sources of energy does not occur overnight; it is rather a continuing effort in time and money to achieve the goal of providing energy to an ever increasing demand. The public has been accustomed to the availability of energy whenever and wherever it was needed. The era of "energy gluttony" has begun to fade into the realm of "energy awareness". Unfortunately, it required the action of another country to bring the picture that has been discussed many times in the past by energy suppliers into correct focus. Nevertheless, the public responded by conservation efforts to reduce energy wastefulness. Still, the demand for foreign importation of energy supplies is on the rise. What is our recourse? The largest known unexploited energy resource available in the United States is our coal resources. Moreover, the Department of the Interior has noted that 63 counties in Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas hold 60% of the nation's least expensive strip minable coal. This western coal is the most abundant and least costly Fossil Fuel in the United States. It is acknowledged that western coal is an important input in meeting the energy needs of our nation.

A study was conducted for the AEC to determine the feasibility of constructing an unsupported 315 foot diameter spherical cavity at a depth of 2,700 feet in a salt dome. A cavity of this size and shape has never been attempted. It was determined that the three basic essentials for solution mining; adequate salt, fresh water, and a means of brine disposal were available at the Tatum Salt Dome in Lamar County, Mississippi. Assuming a large, unsupported mined opening of the size and at the depth required would remain stable, the most practical method of providing the cavity using solution mining techniques is by use of a movable blanket of air to control the water level to properly shape the cavity while removing the insolubles either with jetting or by conventional mining methods. It is estimated that, using the jetting method of insolubles removal, the cavity can be constructed in 24 months for approximately $7 million. Using conventional mining techniques to remove the insolubles and shape the final cavity, it is estimated that the cavity can be constructed in 36 months for approximately $12.6 million.

Laboratory column leach tests are used routinely to evaluate gold and silver ores for heap leaching. The tests are fairly straightforward. The ore to be tested is placed into an appropriately sized leach column. Then an alkaline cyanide solution is applied to the ore and the effluent solutions are collected. The effluent solutions are then put through a column of activated carbon to recover the gold and silver in solution. Zinc precipitation may also be used for silver ores or if the ore contains a significant amount of soluble silver in addition to gold. The length of the leach time in the tests is mainly a function of how quickly the precious metals are recovered from the ore. At the completion of the tests, the tailings are assayed and the recoveries determined from the calculated head grades. The amount of ore to be used for a test is partly a function of its crushed size. The coarser the size, the larger the sample size for the column. A typical small-scale laboratory column test on ore crushed to -12 mm (-0.5 in.) would usually be conducted in a 100- to 150-mm-diam (4- to 6-in.-diam) column 2 m (6.6 ft) in height, containing about 20 to 45 kg (44 to 99 lb) of ore. A comparable test on the same ore crushed to 50 mm (2 in.) would be conducted in a 200- to 300-mm-diam (8- to 12-in.-diam) col¬umn 2 m (6.6 ft) in height, containing about 80 to 200 kg (176 to 441 lb) of ore. The Azores islands are located on a triple junction where the American, African (AFR), and Euroasian (EUR) plates meet. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), oriented N-S, represents two branches of the T; an E-W branch defines the EUR/AFR boundary called the Terceira Rift. The nature and structure of this plate boundary, as well as the dynamics of the interaction of tectonics and volcanism remain unconstrained. The Azores plateau is seated on a mantle domain of anomalously low seismic S-wave velocities, and gravity and geoid anomalies, where the apparent thick crust is thought to relate to larger degrees of melting initiated at greater depths [1]. The cause of these anomalies is controversial but many authors consider the presence of an anomalously hot/wet enriched mantle probably supplied by a plume [2]. The geochemistry of the subaerial and most submarine lavas from the plateau reinforces the plume model beneath the Azores [3-4]. The origin, size and present location of the plume is under debate but an area near Terceira is the favoured plume centre [5]. There is an old saying in Canada: "Mines are made as much as discovered." What follows is Young's perception of his experience developing and financing the Cochrane Hill gold mine project. In 1974, I came back from rutile and zircon exploration and mining in Australia. I became interested in a copper, lead, and zinc project in the Bathurst District, New Brunswick. Much field work had already been done but I was convinced that a reinterpretation of the geophysical work left room to enlarge on the known mineralization. So, with my own money I put a property deal together, found an underwriter willing to raise $100,000, and had a lawyer produce a prospectus. The prospectus was ultimately accepted for filing by the Ontario Securities Commission and I acquired funding and began work. It did not take many drill holes to determine that the interpretation was not geologically valid. However, while drilling was going on, geophysical and geochemical explorations indicated interesting anomalous zones elsewhere on the property. But by now the base metal market climate had soured and the $50,000 I had left was not enough to evaluate the new results. So I decided to farm out the property. A data folio was produced and the property was optioned to a major mining company, with Northumberland Mines Ltd. retaining a 20% free, carried interest. By 1976, the market for junior issues was so bad no under¬writer would even talk to a geologist and I still had the $50,000 in the bank and was looking for something to initiate. A Project That Went Nowhere Market research indicated that the Toronto area imported fine calcium carbonate fillers from Georgia, Alabama, and Vermont. I was aware of the specs and the fact that there is a large marble belt in Eastern Ontario. After some prospecting, I found an interesting deposit. The product was slightly high in silica and low on brightness. Research work eliminated the silica and corrected the brightness. So, with insufficient money we launched a feasibility study. This included diamond drilling, bulk sampling, special fine grinding and air classification tests, and an in-depth market survey. Our product was as good or better than those on the market. Our advantage was that delivery could be made by a two-hour truck haul to the customer. The present system of rail delivery had many problems, especially in winter. Despite everything looking rosy, we ran into a stone wall. The underwriters were singularly unimpressed because the public saw little glamour in a substance most people had never heard of. The issue would have been difficult-if not impossible-to sell. Banks and government agencies took the position that if we could get long term take-or-pay contracts then they would lend the required capital. None of the suppliers, however, would even consider a contract until production had begun and they could evaluate the production material. It was a classic "catch 22" situation. I have gone into this in some detail to show how tough the industrial mineral market can be. We eventually optioned this calcium carbonate property to a major corporation. The option agreement would give us a free, carried 15% and the right to buy up to 40% for contributing 25% of the production costs. But the experience left my company in poor financial shape. To survive, I think the entrepreneur-geologist must always have at least one project in reserve, an emergency plan. I had been searching out a new project to work on, after the calcium carbonate option was wrapped up. It was gold. Gold intrigued me and I knew quite a bit about Nova Scotian gold. I felt that with any rise in price, many of the former high-grade gold mines would have interesting potential for the larger, low grade portions of the deposits. That is how I happened on Cochrane Hill, where much work had been done in the early 1970s when gold as $4.82/g ($150/ oz). This time my timing was good. No sooner had Northumberland signed an option agreement than gold prices started to rise. In six months, they went to $27.331g ($850/oz). Even so, financing gold prospects in early 1980 was still not easy. It had been years since gold financing had been undertaken. A whole new generation of investors, with no knowledge of gold mining, had grown up. So, with accounting and legal council, we decided on a semiprivate "seed money" offering. Under the new Ontario Securities Act, this was a new-and partly tax sheltered-concept. At the time, it was very innovative.

When performing blasting operations in open pit settings, energy is released and transmitted through the geology. Some negative effects can have significant impacts on mining operations and adversely affect mine production. This technical paper presents recommendations for blast design to prevent damage due to ground motion from blasting on adjacent concrete structures of underground operations. The paper includes a case study describing a problem regarding an open pit mine expansion and asks whether production blasting will damage concrete shaft structures due to blast stress waves and blastinduced ground motion. Based on the results, a set of criteria is provided to implement in current and future mining operations that involve blasting near underground concrete structures. A set of techniques on how to improve vibration levels for safe operations is also presented. Knowledge of particle velocity and wave propagation for site-specific circumstances to determine a safe level of vibration is recommended. Emphasis is placed on making use of electronic detonators and early delay detonators to achieve successful levels of vibration. A dynamic analysis is necessary to determine if vibration from blasting can damage the concrete shaft structure. When reinforced concrete structures are subject to blast loading, both concrete and steel are subject to very high strain rates. As opposed to static loads, when subject to high strain rate loads these materials increase their strength significantly. In fact, they increase by more than 50% for reinforcing steel, by more than 100% for concrete in compression, and by more than 600% for concrete in tension. This finding is of significant importance in mining operations because it allows an increase in flexural capacity of individual members as a result of high strain rates. Therefore, an elevated ground vibration (PPV) or particle velocity is permissible when blasting takes place near concrete structures.

Silver ore was discovered at Aspen in 1879, but the district did not reach full production until 1888 after lawsuits were settled and railroads furnished less expensive transportation to the outside world. The boom years were 1888-92; production declined thereafter. From the middle 1920's until 1950, the Midnight mine in the Richmond Hill district furnished most of the output in the Aspen quadrangle. Since 1950, little mining has been done at Aspen. The metals produced were silver, lead and zinc. Native silver dissolved from the sulfide ores was redeposited by waters circulating as deep as 300 m below the land surface, resulting in great secondary enrichment of many of the deposits. Over 100 million ounces of silver were produced in the Aspen quadrangle. Low-grade lead-zinc deposits remain between the old workings locally, and data available suggest that primary ore below levels mined is also of low grade. The ore occurs in the Mississippian Leadville Limestone and the lower part of the Pennsylvanian Belden Formation in sites that were made favorable for deposition by a number of stratigraphic and structural factors.

Gold has always been a crisis investment. For centuries gold has been considered globally the money of last resort. In time of war, inflation, financial uncertainty, political upheaval there has with few exceptions always been a flight to gold. The gold paradox simply is that even though we have gone through for the past handful of years all the kinds of. anxieties that would cause the gold price to rise, it has instead dropped drastically. Figure 1. illustrates the important factors that influenced the gold price significantly up or down before 1987. Obviously, since then, even though we have had wars, inflation, financial problems involving breaking banks and thrifts let alone collapsing financial institutions, the gold price has both in the long-term and the short-term trended downwards. Figure 2. depicts the gold price path since 1987. If the presence of time-honored and time-tested factors that should have driven the gold price up didn't do the job, then logic dictates that new factors to drive the gold price down and keep it depressed arose. And they did. But before addressing these depressants permit me to turn to the arcane art of gold price prediction and fore-casting.

Next year marks the tenth anniversary of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA). As the U.S. coal industry scrambles to cope with serious economic difficulties, it is appropriate to examine some other difficulties that have their origin in certain provisions of that ten year old law, and that bear directly on the economic viability of surface coal mining in the west. This paper focuses briefly on three technical issues in the reclamation of surface coal mines in arid regions, and suggests that innovation can resolve these issues. The coal industry operates within a narrow legal context, defined in 1977. In enacting SMCRA, Congress listed among the purposes of the Act ?... to...strike a balance between protection of the environment, agricultural productivity and the Nation's need for coal as an essential source of energy." I maintain that such a balance has never been struck, particularly with regard to the reclamation of mines in the west. One reason is that when SMCRA was enacted its supporters were aware of uncertainties about the potential for successful reclamation of western surface mines. Over the intervening years, as a recent Congressional study report (OTA, 1986) points out, "...the risks these uncertainties may pose to the long term success of western reclamation have been reduced significantly." Unfortunately, SMCRA's enforcement agency, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) has not yet recognized this fact, and the western coal industry is paying the price.

This paper deals with concentration of hematitic-limonitic iron ores. The ore sample obtained from Karakuz (Turkey) contain:. about 40-46 I Fe. First, a low intensity magnetic separation process was employed to separate the strongly magnetic particles cf "-10+2 mm" and "-2+0.075 mm" size fractions and magnetic concentrates with 59.1 % Fe aid % 58.0 Fe were obtained respectively. The non-magnetics of both fractions were then fed to a nigh intensity permanent magnetic separator. The Fe contents of "-10+2 nun" and "2+0.075 mm" size fractions were increased from 28.2 to 51.13 and from 35.4 7. to 43.25 respectively after single pass. Easing on these results, it was concluded that the high intensity permanent magnetic separator could he used as a pre-concentrator f.7.1- hematitic-limonitic Karakuz iron ore.

The conventional method of mining underground, using narrow rooms and wide pillars, has proven to be poorly adapted to the powerful earth forces that act on underground openings. The high costs of roof bolting, timbering, steel arching, and other means of artificial roof support for both room-and--pillar operations and longwall gate roadways attest to the limitations of traditional mine design. Too often, productivity halts when corners buckle under "cutter roof' stresses, floors heave, and roof strata fall. In the 1960s, an entirely different approach to strata control was developed. The Stress Control Method (SCM) stabilizes failing roofs and heaving floors by removing the cause of failure - highly concentrated stresses around the openings. This is achieved by regrouping three to 10 rooms into a single entry where the rooms are separated by very narrow yielding but stable pillars. SCM employs a specified excavation sequence to redirect earth pressures away from the mine openings. The yield pillars act as scaffolding until a permanently protective secondary stress envelope forms around the entry (lower part of Fig. 1). The result is a dramatic improvement in roof stability and a significant reduction in artificial support costs. Some roof bolting must still be done, mainly to meet Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements. Potash, salt, coal mining The stress control method was first applied to the deep potash mines of Saskatchewan. The new SCM design actually increased room widths to enlarge the stress envelope, redistributing the stress concentration away from the entries (Serata and Schultz, 1972). This resulted in a turnaround from pervasive roof fall/floor heave conditions that threatened operations in the eight new mines opened in the Saskatchewan potash field during the 1960s. In addition to eliminating all roof bolting, SCM successfully stabilized ground conditions and substantially increased productivity over the original design (Serata, 1976, 1982). Similarly, the deep Boulby potash mine of Yorkshire, England, was about to close after various conventional means of combating roof failure had failed. An SCM test area was excavated that resulted in the ground quickly stabilizing without need o artificial support (Serata, 1982; Chilton and Laird, 1982). Another example is the Diamond Crystal salt mine in Louisiana. Here, multiple level mining was being extended from the third to the fourth level downward in the Jefferson Island salt dome. Extensive roof failure was occurring at 396 m (1300 ft) ii the third level. SCM design principles in creased the room size from 24 to 49 m (80 t( 160 ft) on the fourth level at a depth of 457 m (1500 ft). This unprecedented expansion of room width was first questioned and later ap¬proved by MS HA, which expressed satisfaction in seeing the improvement documented by field validation data in 1973. The most recent SUM application to salt mining has been in the Michigan Basin a: Goderich, Ontario. The anticipated abandonment of Domtar Chemicals Group/Sifto Salt Division's deep operation in bedded sale was prevented by a multi-year SCM implementation. The success of SCM in dry mining[lecc] to its application to solution mining of salt This adaptation of the method is now being implemented in bedded salt at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta by Dow Chemical Co., and in St. Clair, MI by International Salt Co. Application of SCM to solution mining in a salt dome is proceeding at Napoleonville. LA by Dow Chemical. The same technology has also been applied to cavern design for the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP), and the compressed air energy storage (CAES)

The East Side Access (ESA) Project will extend Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) into midtown Manhattan via 11 km of tunnels, a new terminal station and associated support facilities. In addition to the hard-rock tunneling currently underway in Manhattan, soft-ground tunnels in Queens will traverse beneath Amtrak?s Sunnyside Yard and Harold Interlocking, the busiest rail interlocking in North America. This paper details ESA?s coordinated approach to interfacing with both Amtrak and LIRR with regard to the planned tunnels, shafts and related construction beneath or adjacent to the operating railroads. This interface includes integration of railroad staff, extensive presentations, reviews and agreements with the railroads regarding settlement mitigation, real-time automated geo-instrumentation monitoring, ground improvement, and geotechnical/environmental controls.

As the search for new sources of energy and minerals leads to more remote areas of the country - and the world - the need to plan for adequate housing and community facilities for the construction and operations workforces and their families takes on an importance equal to the mining and processing facilities themselves. A corollary to the need for planning is the increasingly crucial need for development companies to devise effective strategies for dealing with the local communities impacted by these projects. Experience has amply demonstrated the high price to be paid for failure to learn this lesson, a price measured in lost productivity, confrontation with local communities, labor turnover, mental health and other social and eocnomic problems. In Sweetwater, Wyoming, a new industrial activity caused the population to double from 18,000 to 36,000 between 1970 and 1974. During that period industrial productivity fell 25 to 40 percent, cost overruns on the principal new industrial facility exceeded 33 percent, annual employee turnover rates climbed above 100 percent, the local mental health clinic workload increased nine times and complaints to the local law enforcement agency increased 60 percent.

"“Industry 4.0” – “Mining 4.0” - perhaps you have already heard of these terms? These keywords signify the next stage of industrial production. The internet and production technologies are growing closer together. Machines can communicate with one another, wherever they may happen to be located. The “Internet of Things” is the appropriate term. But what does SAFETY 7.0 mean? It is both brand new and traditional at the same time. It also has to do with the success of companies, with efficient production. And yet there is a great deal more at stake. It has to do with our lives and our safety – the supreme commodity in this world. What exactly SAFETY 7.0 means, what the number 0 stands for and the meaning of the number 7, and what this all has to do with mining will be explained in the following article. Mining is a fascinating undertaking. Mining is indispensable for a country’s economic development, whatever that may concern: infrastructure, energy supplies or raw materials for industrial production. Mining has brought forth many technological developments and innovations that can currently be found in our daily lives. Mining is impressive, grandiose and repeatedly fascinates mankind with its immense dimensions. Miners throughout the world still work hard and, for this reason, are bound to one another in a special way. In mining, every man looks out for the other; you have to be able to rely on each other. That creates a strong bond. The other side of the coin is that mining and disasters belong to normality in the media and thus also in our perception. Accidents at work and even catastrophes occur in mining, quarries, or raw material operations almost on a daily basis somewhere in the world. They are often associated with extremely serious injuries, or even a fatal outcome, for the miners affected and, in turn, dramatic consequences for the families of those involved. It could be in China, India, Russia, or somewhere in Africa, Asia or America – it mostly does not happen in front of our door or in our neighbour- hood. Perhaps because of this in the daily concert of negative headlines, we do not register these catastrophes any more in our minds. We write them off under the heading “Nothing special”, since there are, day in day out, more terrible news items about wars, civil wars, famines, or ecological disasters. Things only really change if there is a dramatic number of deaths or when we are personally affected, close by in the vicinity, or can witness the rescue action live. Geologically, as distinct from economically, "porphyry copper (molybdenum, gold, silver, etc.) deposits" might be defined as large, disseminated and/or stock-work occurrences of copper-minerals, generally averaging less than 1 per cent cop-per. They are normally associated with small plutons which range in composition from granite to diorite, although, typically, they consist of quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Circumstantial evidence indicates that these "minor" granitic intrusions may represent the intrusive phases of post-orogenic, calc-alkaline volcanism, this conclusion being suggested by: 1. Texture and grain size. 2. Prevalence of intrusive breccias. 3. Relationship to unconformities and estimated depth of emplacement. 4. Spatial distribution in relation to orogenic zones. 5. Age of mineralization and igneous episodes

"THE SUPER CYCLE IS GONE The utopia of the rising sales volume, for mining companies from 2002-2011, was entirely due to rising production volume and prices. The Australian mining sector experienced an 18 percent annual growth rate in revenues, and 11 percent growth in prices. (1) However, EBIT remained flat during the same time period. In addition, Australian mines saw a 7 percent annual decline in both labor and capital productivity. (2) Mines in the U.S. and Canada produced similar results, whereas the world-wide mining industry has seen a productivity drop of 40% since 2001. (3) The decade “Bull Run” of rising prices was trashed by companies that chased low-quality assets while increasing debt on their balance sheet. It seemed everyone believed the “super cycle” would last forever, while completely ignoring the history of cycle downturns. Worldwide mining operations are as much as 28 percent less productive today than a decade ago, according to new McKinsey research. The results from McKinsey’s new MineLens Productivity Index (MPI), which adjusts for declining ore grades and mine cost inflation, show that the pronounced decline in productivity is evident across different commodities and is seen in most mining players and geographies. (4) McKinsey sees three important areas of focus to address the root causes of productivity decline. 1) Embed effective management operating systems at mines 2) Prioritized operational excellence and capabilities development 3) Focus on innovation Reality has now settled back in and companies are struggling to make ends meet. The basic management staple of controlling costs and improving the production/productivity that was lost in the excitement is now back in play. Traditional cost-cutting approaches, such as across-the-board spending cuts, layoffs, and hiring freezes are only short-term initiatives and will not permanently improve a company’s cost structure or improve long- term competitiveness. This can only be accomplished by engaging front-line employees and empowering them to make necessary improvements in their daily work. It is time for leaders to lead and develop cultures of continuous improvement within their organizations in order to sustain their mining project to the end of mine life. Successful operating managers require two different skill sets of Leadership and Management; knowing how to lead people in their organization and how to manage the work they do."

Sublevel open stoping is a low-cost method that has been successfully employed in many large underground mining operations. Where ore body characteristics are suitable, extensive mechanization and the use of large-scale stoping techniques can considerably reduce operating costs. However, careful long-term planning of mine layouts and large capital commitments in development are required prior to production. Implementing precise mine design procedures and carefully controlling operations can result in considerable benefits. This article describes methods to achieve these objectives based largely on mining operations at Mount Isa, where sublevel open stoping has been used since 1932. Ore won by this method accounted for a very large percentage of the total tonnage produced at Mount Isa. Major costs associated with sublevel open stoping can be classified as drilling, explosives and charging, and LHD costs. In this article, analyses of these costs are made with particular reference to stope design. Parameters such as burden, drill hole diameter, explosive density, specific charge, etc., are considered in establishing the interrelationship of unit operating costs, as well as total costs of sublevel open stoping.

A two-step flotation scheme was employed to beneficiate a low-grade, cherty-calcareous rock phosphate ore from the Jhabua district, Madhya Pradesh, India. In the first stage, apatite and calcite ire floated together to remove silica, and, in the second stage, calcite is floated and apatite is depressed. The reagent scheme consists of sodium oleate, sodium silicate, orthophosphoric acid and sulfuric acid. The effect of reagent dosages on the efficiencies of separtition in each stage was studied systematically. A flowsheet was proposed for the processing of a low-grade phosphate ore containing 12.5% P2O5, 26.5% SiO2 and a CaO/P2O5 ratio of 2.64 (=32% calcite). The proposed flowsheet would produce a composite phosphate concentrate containing 27.2% P2O5, 6.37% SiO2 and a much reduced CaO/P205 ratio of 1.66. The total P2O5 recovery for the composite concentrate would be 73% .

The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 in New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be widespread through much of the Tasman fold belts of Eastern Australia. Production is estimated to be some 500,000 carats from several small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration, though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond content has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia during the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives. Of those, 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe, however, the 1200 Ma high-grade Argyle lamproite and associated nearby alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable. Its current annual production is 40 million carats valued at about US$400 million. Production from the open pit will be sustainable until at least 2003.
