Investigations in the Ortiz Mountains have revealed the relationship of igneous activity and gold mineralization to the Tijeras-Canoncito Fault System (TCFS). The northeast-trending TCFS passes through the southeastern part of the Ortiz Mountains where its principal structure is the asymmetric Ortiz Graben. Several fault blocks, containing up to 305 m (1000 ft ) of Eocene Galisteo Formation, comprise the graben that has up to 1220 and 610 m (4000 and 2000 ft) of stratigraphic separation on its southeast and northwest sides, respectively. Intrusions in the Ortiz Mountains can be subdivided into two petrochemical types: an older calcalkaline suite and a younger alkaline suite. The calc-alkaline rocks are characterized by extensive sill, dike, and laccolithic bodies of latite-andesite intrusives and at least one younger (?) granodiorite stock at Candelaria Mountain. The alkaline rocks consist of a large nepheline-bearing augite-monzonite stock, a latite-porphyry hypabyssal plug, the Ortiz diatreme (vent breccia), and trachytic-latite dikes radial to the diatreme. K-Ar age determinations suggest the older suite to be 34 +/-2.2 million years while the younger alkaline rocks range from about 30 to 26 million years. Gold mineralization in the Ortiz Mountains occurs in five distinct environments: brecciapipes, skarns, veins, porphyry-like stockworks, and placers. Lode mineralization is associated with the alkaline suite of intrusive rocks postdating the Ortiz diatreme and predating most of the trachytic-latite radial dikes.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the former U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) have put significant effort over the past four decades into researching and developing engineering controls and interventions to reduce mine workers’ dust exposures during the bagging and palletizing of industrial minerals. Workers who perform the manual bagging and palletizing of 50- to 100-lb bags typically have some of the highest dust exposures of all workers at mining and mineral processing operations. This paper provides an overview of available dust control technologies for bagging operations and presents the findings of a recent case study conducted at four industrial sand operations to identify the current types of bagging and palletizing technologies being used and to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing workers’ exposures to respirable crystalline silica dust. An evaluation is also performed to determine if further reductions in respirable dust levels can be achieved by incorporating additional modifications or improvements into the existing technology.

First of all, I want to thank John Dunlap for asking me to this AIME meeting in Denver. I was first introduced to Denver and The Rocky Mountains more than ten years ago and immediately decided it was one of the most attractive spots in the world. I've come back many times since and still welcome any opportunity to return, even if it means I have to prepare and give a paper on potash. When John Dunlap gave me this assignment, he told me that the program would include papers on the geology of potash, papers on new discovered potash deposits and new mines and asked me to discuss potash from the commercial point of view. He also asked me to include a supply/demand outlook for potash. However, one thing he did not mention was "how far into the future he wanted me to look" and it seems to me the time element is a crucial factor to you who are both geologists and miners as well as to me. In your case, you have to look far enough into the future to give you time to explore, find, evaluate, develop, and bring into production a commercial deposit. My mining associates and friends don't agree on how long that takes but it's probably somewhere in the range of eight to fifteen years. But, they all agree on one thing and that is that the time required is continually getting longer. Now my time problem is just the opposite. It is "relatively" easy, and I stress relatively, to identify and evaluate the importance of the various factors that impact on both the supply of and demand for a commodity such as potash if the time period is today. It gets a little tough if one has to project into tomorrow or next week or next month. And when we start talking in terms of a year, five years or ten or fifteen years, things really get sticky and the old crystal ball becomes mighty cloudy. But we economists and forecasters are not known for our temerity so let me get on with the job at hand and take a look at the world potash supply/demand outlook.

A geomechanical rock mass classification or RMR is currently being used for the evaluation of an LHD mechanized mining system versus the conventional block caving method. The successes and failures of a Panel lS-19 LHD test block on the 2315 level can be attributed to the geologic and geomechanical zonation present. Trench blasting, caving procedures, and sequencing are other factors that were also considered. Lessons learned from the P.lS-19 test block have been used to alter the design for future LHD production blocks on the 2615 level. These modifications are designed to maximize the pillar and insure an adequate draw connection.

Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids are used in the flotation of iron values present in iron ore. Among the several fatty acids, oleic acid and its sodium salt are widely used. To substantiate the flotation results, the quantum chemical calculations of a few such acids have been carried out by adopting the semi-empirical AM1 method. These acids have been further optimized in the presence of an iron atom. The electronic interaction of the polar carboxylic head group of oleic acid with the iron atom is higher compared to the other acids. The surge in demand for battery materials, coupled with environmental challenges linked to battery disposal, underscores the need to recycle spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Green recycling approaches, in particular, have garnered attention for battery recycling. In this study, a hydrometallurgical method using a synergetic organic lixiviant combining methanesulfonic acid (MSA) and citric acid (CA) as an alternative to inorganic mineral acids was introduced as a green approach to recycle cathode materials of LIBs. The conditions for leaching and recovery processes were optimized. Cathode materials were regenerated using the recovered materials. Moreover, the leaching performance and economic feasibility of this leaching system were compared with those of various other organic acids.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health, Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multielement ground support system, there is a need to know the support characteristics that the shotcrete contributes to the overall system. To quantify the support provided by the shotcrete, flexural strength tests were conducted with two common, commercially available fiber-reinforced shotcrete (FRS) mixes using the round determinant panel (RDP) test method, ASTM C 1550. A portable RDP test machine developed by NIOSH researchers was used to determine the peak flexural load and residual load capacity for a steel FRS and a synthetic poly FRS that were sprayed using dry mix procedures and equipment. Besides the flexural strength and loading behavior determined from these tests, a method was also developed for measuring the width of cracks exposed on the underside of a shotcrete panel during a RDP test and relating these measurements to residual load values. Quantifying the peak flexural load and residual loads of a shotcrete mix through on site testing at a mine and visually assessing the loading cycle and load-carrying capability of the shotcrete applied to underground workings will improve mine safety by providing a better assessment of the stability of shotcrete supported entries.

"The Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing Tunnel requires a 75-year service life of its cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining. This twin-tube 3-lane (each tube) highway tunnel is about 55-ft wide and 30-ft high. Since unified tunnel service life prediction methodology does not exist in the US, challenges occurred during the design-build phase of this project. These challenges include the methodologies in determining the reinforced concrete’s degradation mode, the lining’s surface chloride concentration level, the reinforcing steel’s critical chloride threshold value for corrosion, how to verify the concrete’s diffusion coefficient, and the durability impact from concrete crack width. This paper presents a methodology in verifying the proposed concrete mix can achieve the service life requirements. This methodology can be adopted for service life prediction for future tunnels to be built in the US. INTRODUCTION The Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing (ORBEE) Tunnel is part of a Public Private Partnership project, which connects transportation network between Louisville, Kentucky and southern Indiana. Located in Louisville, Kentucky, the twin-tube highway tunnel provides northbound and southbound lanes of the Kentucky approach to a new bridge across the Ohio River. Tunnel lengths are approximately 1,675-ft and 1,685 for the northbound tube and the southbound tube, respectively. Connected by two cross-passages, both tubes have a roadway width of 40-ft, for 3-lane traffic, and a vertical clearance of 26.5-ft.The tunnel was constructed by drill and blast method with shotcrete and rock dowels as initial ground supports. The final tunnel lining system includes: •,Nominal 16” cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining, with 2” and 3” concrete covers over reinforcing steel for its extrados and intrados, respectively. •,20” cast-in-place reinforced concrete invert slab, with 4” and 3” concrete covers over reinforcing steel on its top face and bottom face, respectively. •,PVC waterproofing system around tunnel perimeter, excluding invert slab. •,Perforated PVC groundwater collection pipes on both sides of the tubes and one below the invert slab of each tube."

Since the dam of cyanidation leaching techniques for precious metals, certain manganese-bearing silver ores have been a problem due to low silver extractions. Since simultaneous occurrence of silver and manganese is common in nature, this situation has made many otherwise attractive silver deposits uneconomic in the past. Several older techniques have been useful but at $1.29 per ounce of silver, the economics were unfavorable. With the new look in silver prices and some improvements in processing technology, neglected silver districts offer new promise.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) system utilization is a critical factor for predicting machine performance. The process of estimating machine performance, including rate of penetration (ROP) and machine utilization (U) must incorporate an understanding of site geology, TBM specifications and site management. The study herein presents a preliminary analysis of the different activity time and downtime components from hard rock TBMs at two project sites to evaluate their impact on machine utilization. A comparison of crew experience, first between shifts and then between projects is included to analyze its effect on utilization and downtime. This work presents the sensitivity of the utilization factor to selected activities in the projects and the impact of geology and site set-up/logistics on machine performance.

Over the next two decades there will be significant trade and development opportunities in China for mining, engineering, equipment, and construction companies interested in becoming part of the development of China's chemical and fertilizer industries. At last count, China's phosphate ore reserves of 11.8 Gt (13 billion st), ranked fourth in the world behind the US, the USSR, and Sahara-Morocco. However, a recent statement by the head of the Ministry of Geology and Minerals, Sun Daguang, claims that with increased prospecting in the last few years, China's phosphate reserves now rank first in the world. Whatever the actual size of its known and potential reserves, China's present phosphate processing capabilities fall far short of demand, while the substantial progress that has been made in this area points out the severity of the problems that still remain. Since 1949 China has developed 181 mines and increased its phosphate concentrate production from 10 kt (11,000 st) to 10.86 Mt (11.97 million st). By the 1980s, China was the third largest chemical fertilizer producer in the world-although this claim is slightly misleading as China's nitrogen/phosphate potassium ratios are far from average world ratios and even further from US standards. According to the Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in 1982, the country's development plans emphasize the expansion and upgrading of key energy and industrial sectors, including that of fertilizer production-specifically phosphate and potash. Within the framework of the plan, the Ministry of Chemical Industry's development priorities are to: • Increase potash production by 150% to 50 kt (55,115 st). • Raise phosphate fertilizer production 21.2% to 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st), 46 kt (50,705 st) of which will come from new projects constructed and completed within the Sixth Five Year Plan, with projected new production of phosphate concentrate and complex fertilizer in the next decades totaling 500 kt (551,146 st). • Commence work to increase phosphate ore production by 8.33 Mt (9.18 million st). Facilities for 2.43 Mt (2.68 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Commence work to increase iron pyrite ore production by 3.69 Mt (4.07 million st), facilities for 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st) will be completed and come on stream by 1985. • Verify 600 Mt (661 million st) of new phosphate ore reserves. Since the promulgation of the Sixth Five Year Plan, Chinese authorities have announced that 70 key construction projects will receive top priority in the implementation of the plan. These projects include five in the chemical industry area, including the construction of four fertilizer plants in Urumqi (Xinjiang), Zhenhai (Zhejiang), Beijing, and Lucheng (Shanxi), and a pyrite mine in Yunfu (Guangdong). In addition, by 1985 the state will expand or construct three major phosphate mines: Wangji in Hubei, Kaiyang in Guizhou, and Kunyang in Yunnan. Fertilizer Ratios In 1982, China's fertilizer production was slightly higher than 12 Mt (13.2 million st) and consisted of 80% nitrogen, 19% phosphate, and 0.19% potassium. By 1985, state officials project that fertilizer production will reach 13.4 Mt (14.8 million st) and consist of 78.4% nitrogen (10.5 Mt or 11.6 million st), 21.2% phosphate (2.8 Mt or 3 million st), and 0.39% potassium (52.3 kt or 57,605 st). To attain the world average using the country's 1985 projected production level for nitrogen, China will have to double its 1985 phosphate production to 5.76 Mt (6.35 million st) and increase its 1985 potassium production almost 80 times to 4.1 Mt (4.5 million st). These numbers demonstrate the seriousness of the fertilizer production problem in China today and the long-term nature of the problem's solution. Development Examples Yunnan is the third largest phosphate-rich province in China with verified deposits of 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st). Despite this abundance, the province only mines around 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of phosphate rock annually. In June of this year, Yunnan announced its intention to initiate 39 development projects within the next two and a half years, requiring an estimated $200 million worth of foreign investment. The copper smelting process produces plenty of copper slag every year, which is a hazardous solid waste, but a secondary resource. In the present study, the extraction of copper, nickel, and cobalt from copper slag was investigated through the process of sulfation roasting–water leaching and the process of sulfation roasting–sulfate decomposition roasting–water leaching respectively. Compared with the process of sulfation roasting–water leaching, the process of sulfation roasting–sulfate decomposition roasting–water leaching is a better choice, which could not only get almost the same leaching of copper, nickel, and cobalt as the former process, but has a lower leaching of iron and aluminum. For the process of sulfation roasting–sulfate decomposition roasting–water leaching, the leaching of Cu, Ni, and Co reached up to 74.2%, 71.1%, and 69.6% respectively, under the optimal conditions including sulfation roasted with 80 wt% sulfuric acid addition at 200 °C for 60 min and sulfate decomposition roasted at 650 °C for 60 min, followed by water leached at 90 °C for 30min with a liquid–solid ratio of 2 ml/g. The leaching of Fe and Al was only 4.9% and 17.6%.

This paper describes an installation of a medium-voltage adjustable frequency motor drive (AFD) on a high starting torque regrinding mill. This type of application is typically found in the mineral industry dealing with hard ore. The AFD electrical architecture is introduced from line to load. The type of closed loop encoder feedback motor control algorithm is briefly described. The results of the AFD motor identification auto-tuning are compared against the manufacturer’s supplied data. The motor drive performance results are shown for pre-ramp DC fluxing, high starting torque with overload current, excessive load torque stall condition, and blocked rotor. The instrumentation and arrangement for the two watt-meter method to capture low frequency data are presented. The data shown is from the input power quality meter, the AFD computer tool, the output motor protection relay, an oscilloscope, and load shaft connected strain gauge (rotating telemetry for torque assessment). These types of high starting torque constant torque loads are found in mining and process industry applications employing AC adjustable frequency drives. Using field results should help demystify the use of voltage matching output transformers in AFD applications including constant torque loads

The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A., approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora Mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike sub-district of the Carlin Trend, a northwest alignment of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin Trend includes over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 65 million ounces of gold (Figure 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike sub-district, there are seven major deposits: Betze, Lower Post, Post, Genesis, Bluestar, Purple Vein and Deep Star, plus numerous smaller deposits (Figure 2). Production, reserves and resources for the sub-district are approximately 40 million ounces. Betze and Purple Vein are located on property controlled by Barrick Goldstrike Mines and Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property. Post, Lower Post and Deep Star occur both on Barrick and Newmont property.

The chains of armored face conveyor (AFCs) are constantly in contact with water and wet coal, which results in a significant proportion of unplanned downtime experienced on longwall equipment due to corrosion. While reverse osmosis (RO) is one of the most prevalent water treatment methods for reducing salinity and dissolved solids in coal mining, its impact on the corrosion of the AFC chains has not been well studied. This work studies the direct effects of RO water on the corrosion of AFC chains. Immersion tests followed by surface micromorphology analysis and corrosion indices indicate that the RO water increased the corrosion rate of the AFC chains due to the reduced tendency of preventive films on the chains.

Teleoperation is a technology that can provide significant health and safety improvements in mining, by relocating machine operators hundreds of meters away from the face area. The U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has recently developed a teleoperation system for continuous mining and haulage equipment. This system features near-real-time closed-loop control. A prototype system was developed and demonstrated on the surface. This system could be used in thin-seam applications down to 914 mm. Details are provided on the developed teleoperation system, results of testing, and expected, future applications of this technology for improved safety.

The explosion hazard presented by methane gas in coal is confronted daily in the mining industry. Research has developed several viable methods for gas control in addition to conventional dilution by ventilation. Such methods include the drilling of horizontal or cross-measure boreholes from a mine opening and vertical boreholes hydraulically stimulated in advance of mining or for gob gas drainage. The long-term production history of five gas drainage installations was studied. Three installations were completed in the Pittsburgh Coalbed: two in West Virginia and one in Pennsylvania. The remaining installations were completed in the Mary Lee Coalbed in Alabama and the Sunnyside Coalbed in Utah. The types of drainage methods utilized included horizontal and vertical boreholes. The length of production studied ranged from 860 days to 36 years. The cumulative production from the five sites was in excess of 155 Mm3, representing a significant volume of gas.

The known northern ore zones of the New Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri extend to the drainage divide between the Meramec River draining north and east and that of the Black River draining southward. Intensive geochemical studies related to the environmental impact of the new mining area have been carried out in the vicinity of some of the newly developed mines, mills and smelter complexes (Bolter,1970; Gale, et al, 1973; Wixson, et al, 1969, 1977). Other investigations have related to fringe studies of the Northern New Lead Belt and the possible additions of heavy metals to the surface waters, stream sediments and selected aquatic life (Proctor, et al, 1975, 1976). Similar studies have been completed in the Joplin area in the Tri-State district, and in the fringe area near Springfield, Missouri (Proctor, et al, 1974). A surface geochemical study is currently underway on the lead-zinc-copper-cobalt-nickel province near Fredericktown, Missouri (Proctor and Sinha, 1977). This report summarizes some of the distribution patterns of heavy metals in the waters, stream sediments and selected aquatic life in the Upper Meramec River drainage basin just north and west of the known northern portions of the New Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri. The region studied includes the site of the proposed and somewhat controversial Meramec Dam and the reservoir site behind it. Some 3905 km2 (1508 mi2) are included within the drainage basin of the Upper Meramec River. Six distinct drainage areas are included within the drainage basin; 1) a combined, lightly industrialized and farm area around Rolla and Salem, Missouri representing the Dry Fork drainage; 2) a primitive, mostly forested area with some farms and cattle rancheseast and north of Salem, Missouri comprising the Upper Meramec River

"A large-scale wildfire had broken out at Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada during May 2016. Many oil sands mining activities were affected due to the wildfire and the associated ash emissions. In particular, ash emission generated from the fire outbreak is a huge problem during the post-fire cleanup. These emissions pose a severe health hazard to workers, environment, and global climate. The ashes emitted into the atmosphere are caused by either human activities or climate conditions. The objective of this research is to assess the effect of three different ash dust suppressants, namely water, #1 surfactants, and #2 polymers at various volumetric concentrations on ashes samples to prevent propagation of fine solid emissions into the atmosphere. It is found that both #1 surfactants solution and #2 polymers solution are effective in retaining fugitive ash dust generated from the ashes. Volumetric concentration efficiency of 0.05% of #1 surfactant and 5% of #2 polymers in 500 ml of water have been proven to provide ash dust retention efficiency greater than 99% after the spraying of these suppressants. It is also found that both #1 surfactants solution and #2 polymers solution maintain an ash dust retention efficiency higher than that of the use of only water. This confirms the merit of using chemical dust suppressants on fugitive ash dust for a longer period, which is proven by the 72-hour data from this experiment. This study gives a general view of how effective chemical suppressants on fugitive ash emissions work. INTRODUCTION On May 1st, 2016, a large-scale wildfire gutted Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Many oil sands mining activities were affected due to the wildfire and the associated ash emission. Due to the wildfire, some of the biggest oil sands companies in Fort McMurray such as Royal Dutch Shell and Suncor Energy shut down their oil production, at 255,000 and 350,000 barrels per day respectively [1]. Syncrude Canada Ltd scaled down its normal production capacity level of 350,000 barrels per day [1]. This generated an estimated loss of about 1.1 million barrels of oil production per day, constituting a 30% reduction in the Canadian daily oil production, crippling the economy [2]. This loss in production by the companies translated into 0.33 % of the Alberta GDP in 2016 constituting a loss of $985 million and 0.06 % of the entire Canadian economy [3]. In 2017, it is estimated that the rebuilding and reclamation of the affected areas in Fort McMurray will add $ 1.3 billion in GDP to Alberta’s economy [3]. A population of over 90,000 people was evacuated from the location and its surroundings for health and safety reasons [4]. The fire destroyed about 2,400 structures and over 500,000 hectares of forest vegetation in Fort McMurray, leaving an estimated 232,000 tonne of post-fire ashes [5,6]."

A new method of measuring the viscosity of unstable suspensions has been developed, using a Heinz viscometer. The technique was applied to kaolin-water suspensions. Spreads in viscosity with lime additive were measured.
