ISO 14000 series are voluntary international standards that address environmental management system standards, environmental auditing, environmental labeling, environmental performance evaluation, and life-cycle assessment. An environmental management system (EMS) is a facet of an organization's structure that addresses the immediate and long-term impact of a company's products, services, and processes on the environment. Many companies in the United States are taking a cautious wait-and-see approach before embracing ISO 14000. A few mining companies are reviewing the standards and using them as guidelines. The paper outlines the status, possible benefits to the mining industry, and options available to a company wanting to become involved in the ISO 14000 standards.

A nickel-copper sulphide concentrate was treated in a pilot plant at Warren Spring Laboratory during 1961, by a hydrometallurgical roast-leach- solvent extraction process devised to cleanly separate the metal values, and produce acid sulphate liquors containing the metals. It is shown that 86 percent of the nickel and 95 percent of the copper could be leached from the calcine, after a sulphatizing roast on finely ground flotation concentrate. Iron was removed from the leach liquor by limestone neutralization with a small loss of values. Copper and nickel were separated by solvent extraction with naphthenic acid in kerosene after partial neutralization of the iron-free liquors with ammonium hydroxide. Hydrogen sulphide and chlorine were used to remove zinc (and residual copper) and cobalt impurities respectively. The recovery of pure copper and pure nickel, by electrowinning, from the acidic solvent extract strip liquors finally produced, appears technically feasible.

Gold Fields Operating Co.-Chimney Creek has conducted numerous ore reserve modeling studies In order to optimize the estimates of the gold grades and tonnage distributions. Improved models continue to be produced for the major pits which Increase confidence levels required by Gold Fields management and provide the basis for more accurate long and intermediate term mine planning. Various kriging and non-kriging estimation techniques are used at Gold Fields -Chimney Creek Mine. This paper reviews the modeling histories and, current procedures used to construct these models with particular emphasis on the North Pit deposit.

This paper addresses the impact on performance of column height (H), and column height to diameter (H/D) ratio by modelling the effect of HID on mixing and consequently on recovery and grade. Mineral recovery increases with increasing H/D ratio for a constant column volume and feed flowrate, while the concentrate grade decreases to a minor extent. Columns 10-15m in height with H/D-10 are well suited for feed rates 150-600 L/min. Maximum H/D is determined by the gas carrying capacity, an important consideration for pilot units where H/D?200.

Established in the 60-ies, the Zlatna Panega quarry is a cement raw materials quarry supplying 95% of the needs of the Zlatna Panega Cement Plant with limestone, marl and other silica-aluminates. The two major types of raw materials are formed by accordingly dipping strata of Upper Jurassic limestones and lower Cretaceous marls. Between them there is a ?transition-zone? or ?contact-zone? of a high-silica content layer, about 5-m thick, defined as ?flint? by investigations including spot sampling throughout the quarry. For many years this ?contact-zone? layer was neglected due its negligible thickness. Further, with the increasing demand on the quality of the raw materials feed to the Plant and the focus on variability of the chemical and mineralogical components, it was decided not to mine any of the parts of the quarry contaminated by this material, for about three years. The latter had an impact on the availability of operating benches that could result in a substantial decrease in the total recoverable re-serves of Zlatna Panega, particularly with respect to marls. There were considerations for resorting to a partial, selective excavation of the quarry pit with a reduced lifetime for the lime-stones and re-opening of an other (currently in-active) marl quarry at a distance of 6 Km from the Plant. The Quarry Team of the Zlatna Panega quarry was assigned to study the problem. The ?contact? layer was duly confirmed with systematic geological (including mineralogy) studies, statistical analysis of available data, surface sampling and shallow exploration drills, resulted into distinguishing a third type of reserves and their credible subsurface delineation by means of geological 3-D modeling and quarry design. A new quarry design was finally elaborated with a view of providing flexibility in mining, utilization of the total volume of all available reserves and maximizing the mine life of Zlatna Panega quarry. An industrial test took place in December 2005, by using the contaminated parts of the quarry (co-mining of the ?contact-zone? materials) at a contribution of 15-20% in the raw materials mix, as dictated by their contribution in the total recoverable resources of the quarry. The purpose was to investigate the viability of this solution ? in line with improved quarry planning ? without compromising the quality of cement production and the efficiency of Plant Operations. Results were overall successful.

Phosphogypsum (PG) is a by-product of solid waste produced by the phosphate chemical industry. Owing to large emissions and massive storage issues, it causes a potential threat to our environment. Hereby, a method based on the precipitation and crystallization properties of calcium phosphate-magnesium ammonium phosphate (CP-MAP) followed by its adsorption on active solid waste powder is used as the main principle to treat PG harmlessly. The treatment process and its influencing factors for orthogonal experiments along with the associated environmental safety have been studied in detail. The results showed that this method could simultaneously remove soluble phosphorus and soluble fluorine from PG. When ACP, FA, HBM, and Ur were added to PG at a dosage of 3%, 13.5%, 0.04%, and 0.04%, respectively, the residual phosphate and fluoride contents was 0.061 mg/L and 0.856 mg/L respectively in the PG leaching solution. Compared to state-of-the-art approaches, this method exhibited higher efficiency in removing phosphate and fluoride. Most importantly, this method does not cause any secondary pollution in the process, thereby showing a novel application in large-scale industrial treatment.

Limited research has been conducted related to the development of mathematical optimization models for production scheduling at large surface coal mines using the area, i.e., strip, mining method. Increased economic and technical challenges have led to a new interest in production schedule optimization models for these type of mining operations like those currently applied to model underground and open pit mines. While area mines share similar characteristics to both open pit and underground metal operations, neither an open pit nor underground production scheduling model adequately depicts an area mine mathematically. We present an integer programming model with blending constraints and discuss the challenges and opportunities related to the implementation for area mines as well as future research in area mine production scheduling.

The advent of Nuclear Energy has caused a phenomenal growth in the uranium mining industry. To keep abreast of this surge the mining industry has located many ore bodies, determined the best types of mining adaptable to this particular type of ore and developed a highly specialized type of operation. But, has the mining industry gone far enough in the planning? Has ?built-in? safety been included in the efficient methods of operation? Preplanning safety in the mining industry, as in all industries, takes engineering and ingenuity combined with the experience and cooperation of all concerned. A system of mining can be planned on a map and it will look good. However, when the actual mining takes place, conditions may be such that deviations from the original plans may be required because of excessive water faults or other conditions encountered. With safety we may also be required to change, to conform to the characteristics of a particular operation. People in the mining industry are well aware that loose back has killed miners each year. This condition occurred in practically all types of mines. The condition is not new to us. It is also known that explosives, haulage, machinery and conditions common to all types of mining have taken a heavy toll of human life in mining. In addition to these hazards in the uranium mines, the hazard of radon is also present, Radon is a radioactive gas liberated from ores containing radium. This gas is released into the active workings by the blasting or breaking up of the ore. Sometimes it is caused by radium contaminated water seepage from abandoned workings or from the ore body itself. Until the action of this gas on the human was known, many miners were affected. Un- less adequate precuations are taken to protect the people in these mines,, they may be exposed to this hazard, Health researchers made a study of this substance to determine how it would affect the health of the men, They also studied men who had worked in previous years, in mines known to have contained radioactive materials. All of this research contributed to the present knowledge of radon and its daughter products. It is not flammable nor explosive, but, if allowed to enter the body through the respiratory organs it can cause serious damage. Mines have been operated in the past and are still being operated, which were known to contain explosive and noxious gases, indicating that this problem can be controlled. Several states have instituted laws that make it mandatory to provide adequate ventilation and use of monitoring devices to limit radon and its daughter products to a maximum of 300 micro-microcuries per liter of air. This is considered a safe limit for sustained periods of human exposure. While the findings of research do not prove conclusively that the inhalation of excessive radon or its daugher products cause lung cancer, indications point to this as a possibility, particularly radium A and radium C1 of the daughter products. The threshold limits set by law in most uranium producing states are believed to be safe. In a few years, when tests and data now in the process of collection by interested state officials and laboratories is complete, these limits may be found to be ready for revision. Studies such as these take time. At present, the limits that are used are based upon estimates. The permissible limits of exposure to radon and daughter products include a large safety factor. It is considered that a good supply of fresh air delivered to the working places, adequate dust control, the sealing of unused or abandoned workings, the removal of mine water which is generally contaminated and a safe waiting period after blasting, will hold to a minimum the dangers from this source. There are, of course, problems accompanying each of these procedures. For example, the ventilating of untimbered raises and bringing fresh, uncontaminated air to the working places may be a problem. However, a good mining man can solve these problems as they apply in each particular operation. From the information available at the present time, the daughter products containing polonium and emitting alpha radiation, may be a health hazard. Fortunately, the half life of most of the daughter products is short, however, radium D has a half life of 22 years and presents a problem of contamination in the storage of old tailings. So we can see that failure to comply with the accepted good mining practices may have harmful effects on the health of miners. It is gratifying to note the interest in this potential hazard by the officials in the uranium ore producing states, who are making extensive studies and keeping records of the men who work in this type of mining. This all provide information necessary for preplanning safety. By contrast, little has been accomplished to control the injuries and deaths from some other factors connected with most underground mining operations. The sensitivity of radiochemical techniques makes possible the study of the initial stage sulfuric acid leaching kinetics of chalcopyrite and other copper sulfide minerals. High-grade Transvaal chalcopyrite was neutron irradiated in a TRIGA reactor to produce radioisotopes copper-64, iron-59, and sulfur-35. Dissolution rates were measured in the time interval zero to 60 minutes during which time significant anomalies were observed. First, an initial period of rapid dissolution lasting a few minutes; second, an arrest or "plateau" region usually lasting from 6 to 10 minutes; third, a second period of dissolution of lesser rate than the first. The effect of solution variables such as pH, oxygen partial pressure, and ferric ion concentration at different temperatures were measured. The initial rate data were correlated by considering the rapid reaction to be due to the dissolution of surface oxidation products or the formation of an iron depleted surface layer. Chemical and radioisotope stratification studies were carried out in an abandoned uranium tailings pile at Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada. The tailings, with an average thickness of 7 m over an area of 16 hectares, were deposited approximately 20 years ago on a layer of black peaty material which overlays deposits of permeable glaciofluvial sands. Geohydro-chemical investigations of this tailings area have been ongoing since 1978. The radioisotope profile study was conducted on three adjacent sites. Solid core samples, collected with a split spoon sampler at various depths, were analyzed for various chemical and radioisotope constituents. The results indicated by 2 distinct zones of stratification; an upper zone, where the constituents were uniformly distributed, and a lower zone, near the peat-tailing interface, which showed increasing concentration with depth. Within the peat layer, the concentration decreased rapidly with no significant levels of contaminant penetration below the peat layers observed, though the samples were limited. The pH profile showed that the top 5 m of the tailings have been oxidized, the average soil pH in this zone was 3.4 compared to 5 .8 underneath it. The groundwater hydrology of the system was observed to be complex showing downward and lateral flow in the dry season and lateral and upward flow during the spring and periods of heavy rainfall. The results are discussed in terms of a model based on the combined segregation and settling process of the tailings fine fraction, and the geohydro-chemical interaction of the solid and liquid phases.

Traditionally within the mining industry, the main functional process flow for resource and reserve evaluation proceeds from geologists who build the geological model, to resource estimation geologists (modelers) who estimate the grades, to mining engineers who develop the mine design and schedule. The interface between these three disciplines is not always seamless. Assumptions made during one stage of the process are not always communicated down the line, even though most mining companies have procedures in place to encourage communication across the various disciplines. These procedures do not always achieve their aim due to a variety of reasons including time constraints, appropriate people not being available, or a lack of understanding of what other disciplines require, and the handover process can degenerate into one of sending computer files on to the next discipline in the process flow. This paper focuses on the interface between the resource estimation and mine engineering disciplines, and outlines some of the common assumptions made when generating a resource model and the risks that engineers may be taking when elevating cutoff grades, optimizing schedules or generating forecasts. The case studies presented focus on openpit gold deposits, but the concepts should be applicable throughout the industry. A summary of key questions and recommendations is provided.

If the primary purpose of a control system is to assure a fixed-quality product at maximum yield, the real issue involved in control of the fine coal cleaning circuit in a plant is to demonstrate that control is technically feasible and economically beneficial . This paper suggests that it is not easy to do so in most cases. Fine coal, defined here as the 28 mesh x 0 fraction of the plant feed, is generally cleaned using a combination of hydrocyclones and flotation. Both of these processes are relatively insensitive to changes in operating variables. Further, the fines fraction general 1 y forms no more than 20% of the plant feed and, at times, is as low as 10%. The instruments to measure flow rates, densities, and product qua1ity (ash, sulfur, etc.) are not sufficiently accurate to allow effective responses to changing state variables and product quality. It is sufficient to run the fine coal circuits at maximum recovery, and the control of product quality and optimization of yield should be achieved by controlling the coarse coal circuits and measuring the quality of the entire clean coal leaving the plant. This contention is made with particular reference to U.S. plants cleaning coal for the utility industry and should be viewed in this context only. It is explicitly admitted that this strategy is mathematically non-optimal in the sense that all size fractions are not necessarily cleaned at equal elementary ash, and would result in a loss of yield. However, under the conditions of conventional coal cleaning practice, this is a sensible approach.

An industrial engineering and computer simulation study was conducted on reclamation operations to evaluate the possibility of integrating mining and reclamation operations, and to evaluate the factors which influence the production potential of scrapers. The study was done in a southern Illinois strip coal mine producing approximately 2.27 M metric tons (2.5 million short tons) of clean coal annually. The main outcomes of this study are (a) it is possible to reduce reclamation cost about 20-25 percent by integrating reclamation and mining operations, (b) haul distance has the most significant effect on scraper production, (c) push-pull is the best mode of operation for wheel scrapers for topsoil/subsoil removal, and (d) historical data obtained from the mine for one year show that average dozer productivity in rock grading is about 60 percent lower than the expected production; similar data for scraper is about 25 percent less.

Most legacy drift mines entered the coal reserve from outcrop and developed up-dip. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 changed this way of mining, requiring all new mines with acid- or iron-producing coal seams to be designed so as to prevent gravity water discharges from the mine. This Act requires engineered barriers to contain the mine pool. In many cases, mine layout designs focus primarily on the size and hydraulic performance of the un-mined coal barrier between the up-dip mine pool and areas where down-dip surface discharge is possible. In other cases, designs focus on preventing discharges from barriers contained within the strata surrounding the mined coalbed. This paper focuses on a detailed analysis of the factors responsible for preventing mine pool discharges to surface waters. Important factors include: mine layouts, mining methods, hydraulic head and conductivity, and geology. While the exact causes for the successes and failures could not always be determined, reasonable mechanisms are presented.

Linear goal programming is a multi-objective optimization technique where the constraints of a linear programming formulation of a problem are considered as additional objectives. The optimal solution is the one that comes closest to satisfying all the objectives. An interactive computer program was written to utilize this technique in solving the feed blending problem faced by power plants de- pendent on multiple sources of coal supply. This program determines the amount of coal from each supplier to utilize in the blend. Examples of the use of the program in both long and short term coal procurement planning scenarios are given.

"The Sierra Gorda SCM sulfide ore processing plant began commissioning in the third quarter of 2014. Located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, the project is an open pit mine and Copper-Molybdenum processing plant is one of the most highly-instrumented operations in the world. It is the first hard rock operation in Chile and the second in South America to utilize HPGR technology. It is a significant Molybdenum resource especially in the first five years and the Molybdenum separation plant is complex. Designed to process up to 60 million lbs. of fine Molybdenum per year, it uses the latest technology and equipment to ensure superior recovery and product quality. It also has gas handling and alarm systems to fulfil the Company’s vision of “Zero Harm”. This paper discusses the overall operation and issues relating to the concentrator start-up. These include a review of the mineral processing design, the unified process control center and management information systems, and the correlation of geological and metallurgical performance data (mine-to-mill) for use in anticipating and preparing for treatment of diverse ore deliveries. INTRODUCTION Sierra Gorda SCM is a joint venture partnership with KGHM International (owned by KGHM SA, Poland), Sumitomo Metal Mining, and Sumitomo Corporation (Japan) operating in northern Chile. The Sierra Gorda open pit mine and Copper-Molybdenum processing plant will become one of the largest mines in the world. The need for optimum production efficiency and sustainability has driven the creation of the most modern, well-instrumented mine in Chile. This paper contains a general review of the project including geology and history. This was a very fast-track project going from greenfield site acquisition to mill start-up in 10 years. Highly-experienced and motivated engineers and technical staff have overcome many significant challenges resulting in a rapid ramp-up of production capacity. A potential expansion to double the production rate in the fourth year of operation has also been intensely studied. The Sierra Gorda property is located in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, in the District of Sierra Gorda, Region II of Antofagasta, Chile (see Figure 1). There is almost no precipitation in this area. The mine site is generally flat with some rolling hills. The project is located about 5 km from the village of Sierra Gorda at an elevation of approximately 1,700 m above mean sea level. The village is near a highway and railway line. The city of Calama, home of the famous Chuquicamata Mine, is located about 60 km northeast of Sierra Gorda. In addition, the SG mine is in the midst of numerous other mines including Spence, Esperanza, Mantos Blancos, El Tesoro, Lomas Bayas, Gabriela Mistral, El Abra, Radomiro Tomic, and Escondida, to name a few."

Lime made in a coal-fired, rotary kiln has two distinct parts: the interior of the pebble which constitutes about 90% to 95% of the mass, and the surface dust layer which is the remaining 5% to 10%. Uncalcined carbonate and impurities in the product may be present and will not contribute to the hydration reaction. Sulfur, in the form of calcium sulfate, inhibits the hydration reaction out of all proportion to its actual weigh-percent concentration (perhaps more than 100 times). If the stone contains dolomite, this will also inhibit the reaction as its rate of hydration may be nearly 3 orders of magnitude slower than that of calcium oxide. Early in the hydration reaction dolomite appears practically inert, but given sufficient time, it will hydrate. The heat of reaction is nearly the same as for calcium oxide, but the time necessary for complete hydration may be hours; whereas for calcium oxide it is only fractions of a second. The dust layer on the surface also inhibits hydration as it contains a collection of compounds which have low heats of hydration. This layer can tie up additional calcium and delay or prevent its reaction. In addition to these chemical processes, an important physical characteristic of the lime is its specific surface area. This is effected by the thermodynamics of calcination and the original stone grain chemistry. All of these factors are agglomerated in the gross slaking rate of lime. The total hydration of the chemical complex that is called commercial lime can be more easily understood by considering the individual reactions and combining them to form a more comprehensive picture of the situation. Calcium oxide and magnesium oxide hydrate similarly, differing only in their reaction kinetics. Dolomite, however, reacts differently than a simple mixture of calcium oxide and magnesium oxide as its hydration is strongly influenced by calcination thermo-dynamics and stone grain structure. Finally, the dust hydration and composition should be examined Understanding these reactions enables one to examine hydration reaction graphs with more insight into the factors which determine their shape.

In order to better understand the relation- ship of underground and surface oil shale processing systems, a block flow chart is presented in Fig. I. From this figure only modified in-situ and Room and Pillar underground mining are currently committed and into the Detailed Design and Construction phases. Figure II illustrates the times required (Federal land site) to bring oil shale operation into production. As this example shows, only those companies having progressed beyond the exploration stage have a chance to obtain oil shale production within the next 10 years. A more detailed breakdown of the oil shale development for those on private lands or having already obtained Federal lease lands is shown in Fig. III for shale oil development (without major regulatory changes).

The time-worn adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" was never more applicable than when used in reference to coal mine safety. Many individuals have dedicated many hours to developing effective accident prevention programs, and much has been accomplished. Each production escalation, however, creates new hazards and safety problems which need special study and research. It is a never ending cyle. To study the progress of coal-mine safety is to raise memories of many individuals who have been dedicated to removing the hazards that have developed with increased productivity and deeper penetration into the earth for coal. Some vivid examples of this dedication are the works of the men who pioneered the use of the safety lamp and the use of rock dust in mining.
