Artificial sulphides have been produced on the surfaces of heavy metal-oxide, minerals at elevated temperatures (1) and these sulphides gave consistently similar flotation characteristics as the respective natural sulphides. In the case of tin, the only natural tin sulphide known is herzembergite (SnS) which is found only in minor quantities, and its flotation behavior is not known. Balberyszki, Dorenfeld, and Carmi reported (2) tests with artificial tin oxide and pure cassiterite treated with hydrogen sulphide at temperatures above 750oc. They confirmed that the product could be floated in acid pulps. However, iron sulphides derived from pyrite, limonite, and hematite which are generally the major impurities in tin bearing ores could not be separated from tin sulphides under the conditions used by previous investigators. As a practical matter, if complex tin ores or complex low grade tin concentrates are to be treated by this process, it is necessary to be able to separate sulphidized cassiterite from other sulphidized minerals in the feed. The major metallic minerals, by weight, in complex tin ores are the iron minerals--pyrite, hematite, limonite, magnetite and pyrrhotite. These minerals become (or remain) sulphidized during the sulphidization process.

The rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemical (metallic) elements. REEs are used widely in high-technology, clean-energy products as well as weapon systems. China's dominant position as a producer of over 95% of the world REEs output and the world's increasing reliance on REE products have highlighted concerns about the future availability of rare earths in recent years. This paper briefly reviews the REEs world reserves, production, consumption, the impact of our heavy reliance on REEs products and China's changing policies on REE export on world supply chain.

The Lomas Bayas copper property is located93 km (58 miles) east of Antofagasta, Region II, Chile (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1880. The deposit produced intermittently until 1992. Production at Lomas Bayas took place in high-grade veins and breccias mined underground. During 1991, Empresa Minera Mantos Blancos SA (EMMB) optioned the property from Compania Doña Ada SA. Doña Ada maintained the right to continue mining the ores by open-pit and block-caving methods and hauling the ore to its plant located60 km (37 miles) to the north. EMMB conducted exploration and column test programs. On May 9, 1994, Compania Minera Gibraltar Ltda.(CMGL) signed a purchase option agreement to acquire the Lomas Bayas property. CMGL conducted 8,612 m(9,490 ft) of reverse-circulation drilling, 2,028 m (6,650ft) of diamond drilling, a series of metallurgical tests and geologic mapping. The company then decided to exercise its purchase option.

One of the most significant advances in Mineral Processing in recent years, is the development of the selective flocculation technology. The technology is primarily aimed at recovering the mineral values from ultrafine ore suspensions. This is achieved by selectively aggregating the mineral particles in question to such size as to enable their effective separation from the suspension. Selective flocculation utilizes the differences in the physical-chemical properties of the various mineral components in the mixed suspension. It is based on the preferential ad- sorption of an organic flocculant on the particular solids to be flocculated, leaving the remainder of the particles in suspension. In order to understand the mechanics of this process, selective flocculation may be divided into four major sub processes; these being: ore slurry dispersion, in which all the particles are stably and uniformly distributed in the suspension with the individual particles being essentially separate; flocculant selective adsorption and floc formation; floc conditioning, which aims at obtaining flocs with desire properties for their subsequent separation and with minimum entrapment of dispersed particles; and floc separation from the suspension. These sub processes will be reviewed later in this article.

Alunite (KAl3(SO4)2(OH)6] is one of the important nonbauxitic resources for aluminum in U.S.A. The major gangue material associated with a unite ore body is quartz. Experimental results indicate that oleic acid flotation of alunite is quite effective in upgrading the ore. The flotation chemistry of the alunite/oleate system has been investigated using various techniques such as: hallimond tube flotation response, measurement of adsorption density using I4C labeled oleated, electrokinetic measurements, infrared spectral studies, contact angle measurements and thermochemical measurements using an isothermal microcalorimeter. Alunite has been found to float readily with oleate in the pH range 4-10.5 and its flotation response is enhanced at higher temperatures. The PZC of alunite has been determined to be at pH 7.2 ± 0.15 which agrees with what would be predicted from solution chemistry and from the flotation response with physically adsorbed collectors. Infrared spectra show a specific peak in the range 1585-1600 cm-1 which has been attributed to the formation of an aluminum oleate surface species. Both adsorption density measurements and infrared spectra indicate that during adsorption multilayers are formed. The heat of adsorption of oleate on alunite has been found to be endothermic and of the order of 4-6 KJ/ mole.

An upsurge of interest in slurry pipelines to move coal from Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado to markets in the southwest, west, midwest and northwest has recently developed. Specific pipelines have been proposed to serve these markets; the routes of these lines are depicted in Exhibit I. It is, therefore, timely to discuss some technical aspects of the terminal facilities for these western coal pipelines. The discussion will be based on experience with the Ohio and Black Mesa pipelines as well as detailed planning and testing for a proposed 1,000-mile system from Wyoming to the middle south area. The economics of the pipeline terminal processes are heavily depend¬ent on site, type of process used, and other specifics of the situation. "Productivity in openpit mines depends on the observation and adjustment of critical phases of operation. As one of the most expensive activities in openpit production, optimization of the load-haul-dump cycle becomes a critical aspect to address. Using simulation techniques and an ad hoc methodology for analyzing the key performance indicators (KPIs) involved in the production cycle, it is possible to compare actual performance and ideal operating conditions and develop an alert system when operating conditions are subpar with the expected production standards.Study objectivesThe purpose of this work is to implement a methodology for optimizing the haulage cycle by identifying and adjusting the factors that affect the cycle time performance. The methodology includes the implementation of an alert system emitting warning messages when one or several trucks are idle, or when the time of completing production tasks is falling outside a predefined value. This alert is compared with predefined KPIs and is used to determine corrective actions.The alert will:• Demonstrate the benefits of time analysis and how this affects the productivity results in the mining process.• Demonstrate the utility of KPIs in the extraction of ore and waste and how they help to identify equipment performance.• Develop software interfaces to visualize the alert system in order to increase awareness in the operations supervisor.• Make recommendations for future applications that can help improve the productive process of an openpit mine.Problem statementTransporting material in openpit mines may require the utilization of high capacity equipment, which also represents an elevated cost per hour. A supervisory system that controls the adequate distribution of trucks and shovels by providing the operational status of each unit shall contribute to increase productivity while subsequently reducing operational costs. Nevertheless, there is an issue with certain dead times such as queue trucks for loading, trucks waiting to be loaded and other delays. This creates inefficiencies in fuel consumption and energy utilization.For the identification of delays, a contextbased system could be required in order to help optimize the haulage cycle time by controlling delays in loading, haulage and dumping. After applying this methodology, efforts were focused in correcting out-of-standard performance values."

In recent years the widespread problems of air and water pollution generated by both population and industrial expansion have become a major public concern. Therefore, many municipalities are striving to achieve more efficient wastewater treatment processes so these wastewater's can be reintroduced into the waterways of our nation with little or no detrimental effects on the future beneficial use of that water. With this, improved treatment comes an ever increasing volume of wastewater sludge which must be disposed of in a manner of minimal impact on the environment. Furthermore, with demand for energy continually accelerating in this nation, our concern over high oil prices and our increasing dependency on foreign oil sources, there has been an ever growing interest in the largest energy source that are nation has, coal. However, surface mining of coal can cause many environmental problems when adequate precautions are not faithfully adhered to. These problems include water pollution from silt and/or clay erosion and acid runoff, produced by oxidation and hydrolysis of pyrite; i.e., FeS2 + 3/02 + H20 + FeSO4 + H2SO4. One method of wastewater sludge disposal which can utilize large volumes of sludge for a beneficial project that may not compound our environmental problems is spray irrigation, to either depleted farmland or to abandoned strip-mined soils. Sludge is characteristically high in organics, as well as having near neutral to alkaline pH properties. With these two qualities it possesses a potential for neutralizing acid strip mine spoils, which would enhance the establishment of a vegetative ground cover. The Bureau of Mines developed a detector for controlling sorting devices to separate the copper-bearing fragments from the barren portion of Michigan native copper and western porphyry copper ores. A successful sorter could be used to preconcentrate the ore and eliminate costly hoisting or hauling of waste. An induction balance unit was developed and used in sorting tests on crushed sized -1+1/2-inch (-2.5+1.3-cm) ores from the Kingston (0.9 pct CU) and Centennial (1.6 pct Cu) mines of Upper Michigan. Concentrates of 4.0 pct and 7.5 pct Cu, respectively, were obtained at recoveries of 85 and 80 pct of the copper in the feed. Eighty percent of the sorted ore was rejected as tailing. Sorting larger fragments improved the separation efficiency. Tests on -4+2-inch (-10+5-cm) sized Kingston (1.6 pct Cu) and Centennial (2.1 pct Cu) ore samples yielded concentrates of 4.3 and 4.5 pct Cu, respectively, with corresponding recoveries of 92 and 91 pct. About 60 pct of the sorted ore was discarded as tailing. Porphyry copper sulfide ores also responded to electronic sorting but at a lower separation efficiency. Sorting response was affected by the degree of segregation.

The closing remarks of a paper which I presented at the annual AIME meeting at Dallas, Texas during February of 1963; contained a forecast of increased activity in trackless underground ore mining which finalized that presentation. At that time, HAD I been peering through my brightest rose colored glasses, I could not have foreseen the unprecedented rapidity of acceleration of underground ore mining methods which has since ensued. From Death Valley, California diagonally to St. Johns, New Foundland; from Australia to Africa to Sweden to France and Germany; from South America to Southern Mexico to Northern Saskatchewan and Northern Manitoba the expansion of trackless underground ore mining methods has probably progressed at a faster rate than any other revolutionary' change in the history of underground ore mining.

Mineral exploration in the United States relies heavily on theoretical geologic concepts and indirect methods such as geophysics and geochemical prospecting, as there are few exposed areas of mineralization which have not already been explored at least once. In Mexico ore-grade samples can be cut at the surface on vein, replacement, and disseminated types of deposits in many areas. Here the problem is not in finding a mineralized area but in deciding which mineralized area can be explored and developed at the least risk and cost, and have the greatest profit potential, within the framework of Mexican mineral economics and government policies. Mexico's min¬eral industry is regulated through a system of permits for various phases of mineral exploitation, and by taxes. This regulation and its effects are not unlike those which may be expected in the United States if present legislative and administrative trends continue.

This work is concerned with the extraction of refractory metals using an electro-reduction process, in which a molten oxide melt, instead of halide, is used as the electrolyte. The process may provide an alternative method of producing refractory metals from their ores through use of a reverse-polarity direct current (DC) plasma arc heating process. In such a process, the plasma torch itself acts as an anode, and resulting liquid or solid product metals work as a cathode, whereas the molten oxide melt plays the role of an electron transfer layer. The focus of this study is: the electro-reduction of scheelite; vanadium pentoxide; and chromite. For the vanadium pentoxide, the proposed melt is mainly composed of CaO-V2O5/Li2O-B2O3-V2O5or FeO-CaO-SiO2-V2O5-Li2O with the addition of other alkali and alkaline metal oxides. In the case of scheelite ore, the SiO2-CaO-Li2O-WO3system is used as melt and metal aluminum or nickel could be used as a collecting media. As for the reduction of chromite ore, SiO2-CaO-Cr2O3-Li2O system with trace amount of CaF2is used as the melt. As a demonstration, chromium was successfully produced at a laboratory scale through the plasma driven electro-reduction process. One of the studied slags had a composition of 13.8% CaO; 4.9%CaF2; 36.4% Cr2O3; 6.9% Li2O; and 38.0% SiO2. Two observations are significant in this laboratory scale study. The first one was that the amount of Cr2O3and FeO, which were predominantly electronic conductors in the oxide melt, greatly affected the conducting mechanism of the melt. With high concentration of Cr2O3and FeO in the melt, the current efficiency was fairly low. In this case, chromium was found to be barely reduced because of electronic conducting mechanism. For example, with initial slag of 60% Cr2O3, no chromium was found reduced. With low concentration of Cr2O3and FeO in the studied melt, typically no more than 30% Cr2O3, it was observed that chromium was readily reduced due to the dominant ionic conducting mechanism. The second observation was that the addition of SiO2tothe melt helped to make the oxide melt more ionic, which was apparently desirable to the molten oxide electrolysis. However, high content of silica had a negative effect on the fluidity of the melt. This was resolved by adding trace amounts of CaF2to the melt. Therefore, by judicious selection of oxide melt, refractory metal oxides might be dissolved into it and yet the melt itself retains the required ionicity. A reverse-polarity DC plasma driven molten oxide electrolysis may prove to be a viable alternative route for the extractive metallurgy of refractory metals.

Although geostatistical techniques have been widely accepted as the standard methods for reserve calculations in the mining industry, the production data of many mines frequently differ from geostatistical estimations based on exploration and development drilling. The discrepancies in recovered metal amounts, commonly in the range between 10% and 30%, are related to different factors. Major causes vary from mine to mine. A common cause, however, is the ignorance of important geological constraints in reserve modeling. Three major factors appear to be related to such an unfortunate fact: 1) modelers are over-confident on geostatistical techniques, 2) it is difficult to establish geological models, and 3) mine schedules are too tight to allow detailed geological modeling work. Defining mineralization envelopes has been a major effort in geological modeling. Past experiences have showed that geological modeling is much mo~ demanding than the choice of sophisticated kriging estimators. Since building envelopes for complex ore bodies can be extremely tedious and time-consuming, computerized approaches are badly needed for mine modelers. A comprehensive procedure reported here is referred to as probability-assigned constrained kriging (PACK), which includes a built-in method for defining 3-d mineralization envelopes. The modeling technique is fast and accurate for complex precious metal deposits. The technique is demonstrated on a gold deposit. The estimation results are compared with blast-hole based production panels, showing that the estimated tonnage is 2.2% larger than the actual production and the average grade is 2.6% lower.

"The United States coal mining industry is currently experiencing a decline in both demand and commodity price while facing implementation of more stringent air and water pollution regulations. Company profits have decreased significantly, forcing several major companies to declare bankruptcy. The industry was required to adapt to survive. Many of these companies have adjusted by abandoning mines; the last two decades have seen a drastic decrease in the number of mines. To discover the primary causes of this downturn, three major aspects must be studied: properties of abandoned mines, commodity history and regulatory impact. Trends since 1994Each year, U.S. coal mines are required to submit data on a variety of categories to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data include administrative records, production values and information regarding the attributes of the mined material and the mine itself. Each year since 1996, EIA has released a report summarizing the data from two years prior. Additionally, MSHA maintains a database containing a collection of all the most current data. These resources are the primary sources for the figures included in this article. There are several items to note regarding this data:1. The EIA reports from 2016 and 2017 were not released at the time of writing this report.2. The MSHA data set is actively maintained as information is provided. This means the data for 2016 is from June 27, 2016 and data for 2017 is from Aug 24, 2017. All other points represent the end of-year values.3. Each of the figures only includes data pertaining to active mines. EIA defines active mines as both active and temporarily idled mines, and inactive mines as nonproducing and abandoned mines. MSHA separates all four into separate categories, though this paper combines the MSHA values according to the EIA definition for the purpose of comparison."

This paper is an update of the activities of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, other government agencies, and the automotive and truck industry concerning diesel emission control. Enacted and proposed regulations from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and developments in diesel emission control are presented in terms of their impact on underground coal, metal, and nonmetal mines. Mine air quality regulations proposed by MSHA may require the underground mining industry to comply with new standards. Some mines may be required to take additional actions to meet new diesel particulate and lower nitrogen dioxide exposure standards; however, the mining industry is in a position to benefit from emission controls developed for the on-highway diesel engine market. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has enacted regulations to reduce emissions from on-highway diesel trucks and buses. Engine manufacturers have responded by developing cleaner burning engines. Fuel producers have responded by providing cleaner burning reformulated diesel fuel, and exhaust aftertreatment devices have been developed to provide additional emissions reductions. Bureau research and development projects seek to determine the advantages of using modern engines and fuels, and to evaluate the efficacy of new exhaust control devices on mining machines. It appears that the diesel engine will continue to be a practical power source for use in confined environments because no other available power source is as mobile and efficient.

The focus of this research was to evaluate the synergistic effect of bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (CYANEX 272) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), diluted in kerosene, on the extraction and separation of Co(II) and Li(I) from synthetic sulfate solution. The results indicated that using a mixture of CYANEX 272 and D2EHPA was efficient in extracting and separating Co(II) from Li(I). The optimum ratio of CYANEX 272/D2EHPA was found to be 5:1, in which the highest separation factor was obtained (5973.23), and ΔpH0.5 was 4.10. Adding tributyl phosphate (TBP) as a modifier and increasing the temperature improved the metals’ separation rate and extraction efficiency. Thermodynamic studies were also carried out, and ΔH, ΔS, and ΔG values were computed, revealing the endothermic nature of Co(II) and Li(I) extraction by CYANEX 272/D2EHPA mixture. The conducted experiments for the McCabe–Thiele diagram showed the possibility of using two stages to extract over 99% of Co(II) and Li(I). Slope analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were employed to comprehend the Co(II) and Li(I) extraction mechanism using a mixture of CYANEX 272 and D2EHPA.

The abstract of the paper discusses the challenge of quantifying iron content in a coal deposit in Kazakhstan. The iron dataset is limited, coming from only three drill holes and some stope samples, while a large amount of geological information is available from legacy drill hole data. The paper proposes a workflow using multiple-point geostatistics to model geological domains and two-point geostatistics to model iron content within these domains. The results show that the direct sampling (DeeSse) algorithm effectively reproduces the complex seam layers, and sequential Gaussian simulation models the iron within each domain.

This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation's experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau's water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau's first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. The Robe River Iron Ore Project began in 1962 when Cliffs International acquired mining leases in Western Australia's Pilbara Region. Initial reserves were proven and bulk ore samples sent to the U.S.A. for pilot plant testwork. Cliffs Western Australian Mining Company Pty. Limited (30%) manages the project in joint venture with Mitsui Iron Ore Development Pty. Limited (30%), Robe River Limited (35%) and Cape Lambert Iron Associates (5%).

Petrographic properties of carbonate rocks are useful guides to the utilization of these rocks in SO2-scrubbing systems. High porosity and fineness of grain are thought to be the principal properties that contribute to high dissolution rates of the rocks in the scrubbing liquor. Lake marls and chalks are the major types of carbonate rocks that have these properties. Lake marls are composed mainly of equant grains of calcite (mean grain size generally less than 4 microns) weakly agglomerated in- to larger, porous particles. The marls commonly consist of 80 to 90 percent CaCo3 as calcite and aragonite. Impurities are, for the most part, quartz silt and organic matter. The average pore volume for samples of lake marls (1- to 1.2-mm particles) is about 0.50 cc/g, which corresponds to a porosity of about 57 percent. The mean size of pores in these marls is generally between 1 and 2 microns in diameter. Surface areas of lake marls range from 0.8 to 6.8 m2/g. Chalks have grain sizes and shapes similar to those of lake marls, but they generally have smaller amounts of quartz and organic matter and minor amounts of clay minerals. Pore volumes differ from one chalk formation to another; the 1- to 1. 2-mm particles average about 0.20 cc/g, which corresponds to a porosity of about 35 percent. The mean diameter of pores in chalks tested ranges from 0. 15 to 0.76 micron. Surface areas of chalks range from 3. 2 to 20. 1 m2/g. In the United States lake marls are restricted largely to Pleistocene- age sediments that occur in the states around the Great Lakes. Chalk and chalky limestones are restricted mainly to the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary strata in the Kansas-Nebraska-Colorado area and in the south- eastern states, from Texas to Florida. Results of laboratory tests of the relative dissolution rates of samples at pH 6 and 44°C indicate that, in addition to many lake marls and chalks, oolitic aragonite, pelecypod shells, and carbonate waste sludges from certain industrial plants also have high dissolution rates.
