Large volume sand plugs are placed in tunnels to stem underground explosions at the Atomic Energy Commision's Nevada Test Site. Placement through long, narrow accessways is like stemming coyote holes and blast chambers in mining and construction. Experience with several other methods showed that pipeline conveying could be preferable. Small scale tests justified predicting a placement rate of 20 y. p. h. at 1000 feet, with a modified gunite placer. The initial production trial placed over 2000 c. y. and was estimated to effect a small cost saving after paying for new equipment. Initial problems included duct replacement and supply delays, dust, and other personnel hazards. Operations analysis and SOP'S reduced delays during the second field trial, minimized hazards, doubled production. Re cent re search and operations analyses produced data on abrasion resistant ducts, identified minor equipment modifications which can improve production, developed techniques for impact compaction to 90% ?maximum? and for extension of the practical range to 2000 feet. Twenty-two illustrations include an air consumption-distance chart.

Other than being used to convey fill material for the gob stowage or building of ribside packs on advancing longwell faces, pneumatic conveying has not been used for the transport of materials on a large scale in mining operations. The technique is extensively used in the wood products industry for conveying wood chips, limestone and other ingredients for the manufacture of paper, for the transfer from railcars, barges or ships to silos or stockpiles and further transfer into the pulp mills. This method of material transfer has the distinct advantage of transporting suitable material over horizontal and vertical distances within the same system. In considering material associated with mining, this includes, ore, coal and rock up to 4 inch cubed size, throughputs of 200 tons per hour over horizontal distances of 3000 feet or vertical lifts of 2000 feet. In recent years tests have been carried out to determine the physical and economic limitations of pneumatic hoisting, the results of which have led to the installation of two fully productive coal hoisting systems at mines of the National Coal Board in Great Britain. The equipment used for the pneumatic hoisting of coal or waste rock is described in this paper, together with a brief history of the tests which led up to the installation of the two hoisting systems in Great Britain.

Though the mining industry is beset with problems-a broad slump in metal prices, a rash of acquisitions and takeover attempts, rising capital costs, and an aggressive Canadian energy program-there was an under-current of optimism at the 1981 AMC conference that's been missing at industry meetings in recent years. The industry anticipates a turnaround in the 1980s, buoyed perhaps by the new spirit of cooperation from the Reagan administration. For the first time in years, it appears that Washington and the mining industry share mutual goals for developing the nation's resources. A number of prominent Reagan officials were on hand during the three-day conference in Denver, September 28-30, to reassure conferees that restrictions plaguing energy and minerals development would be eased. Interior Secretary James Watt and other government speakers promised cooperation in bringing balance to federal public lands policies, a review of regulations that have hampered the industry, and prompt action on domestic minerals policy. Daniel N. Miller, Jr., assistant interior secretary for energy and minerals, said, "It is our intent to dismantle the overhearing bureaucracy that has stifled mineral and energy exploration. We know that Interior's rules have shackled the mining industry in recent years, and we know that those rules must be eased." Miller noted that the administration will not permit mining on national park lands or wildlife refuges, but added that "we must assess a variety of uses of public lands ... we will restore lands to multiple use where practical." EPA administrator Anne Gorsuch assured industry representatives that the administration intends to work within environmental laws and with Congress to review and revise water, soil, and air pollution policies. "We have a strong commitment to see that there are major mid-course corrections" of air regulations, Gorsuch said. Support from these "new friends in Washington" will be crucial in light of the serious problems pressuring the industry. Copper prices have plunged to almost three-year lows and prices for molybdenum, gold, and silver have slumped. Earnings are down and today's high interest rates prevent a quick turnaround. Companies are on edge after the recent takeovers of Kennecott, St. Joe Minerals, and Texasgulf Though the companies may benefit from the major injection of capital that large energy firms can provide, many observers fear the new parent companies won't be willing or able to survive the cyclical metal markets. Arco and Gulf Resources, for example, have been criticized for closing Anaconda's Montana copper facility and the Bunker Hill unit in Idaho, respectively. Canada's national energy program has brought additional pressure on the industry. This policy, which emphasizes Canadian majority ownership of the country's energy sources, resulted in acquisition of Texasgulf's Kidd Creek lead-zinc-silver complex by Canadian and French interests. In response, the American Mining Congress adopted two resolutions on takeovers. One calls for the US government to review laws regulating tender offers and takeovers "to better ensure that principles of fairness and sound investment policy govern such transactions.'' The other asks the government to demand "fairness and reciprocity" as a basis for US policy governing international trade in minerals and investment relations with other countries. AMC's shopping list included four other priority goals, aimed primarily at the Interior Department: • Prompt implementation of Interior's efforts to bring order and balance to rules governing access to public lands for exploration and development. • Statement by the President of a comprehensive and coherent domestic minerals policy. • Amendment of the Clean Air Act to remove impediments to productivity and barriers to economic development that are not necessary to essential goals of the act. • Development of new approaches to better achieve worker health and safety in the most cost-effective manner without penalizing productivity. Almost 6000 mining industry executives attended the 1981 convention-the largest in AMC's 84-year history. As in years past, the conference offered a wide spectrum of presentations-nearly 100 papers in 26 sessions-ranging from commodity forecasts to the latest technical achievements. New Administration Stockpile Goals The minerals availability session included a presentation on management of the minerals stockpile by Paul K. Kruege r of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Krueger notes that rather than providing incentives for development of a domestic raw materials industry, the government has "a history of providing disincentives to industry." In mining industries, he adds, the rate of productivity growth has been -6% over the last six or seven years. Krueger feels there will be a major change under the Reagan administration. INTRODUCTION The Washington Camp - Duquesne mining district is located on the east flank of the Patagonia Mountains, 98 kilometers south of Tucson and within 5 kilometers of the International border (Figure 1). Since the development of high-grade silver and copper ores by settlers in 1862, the Washington Camp - Duquesne district has yielded an estimated 450,000 metric tons of ore. The mined ores averaged 8% zinc, 2% copper, 3% lead and 124 grams of silver. REGIONAL GEOLOGY The Patagonia batholith, of Laramide age, crops out in the core of the Patagonia Mountains intruding Precambrian granite, Paleozoic sediments and Mesozoic igneous, volcanic and clastic rocks. This granodioritic batholith lies in a northwest-trending zone of Laramide plutonic rocks, which can be traced for a distance of 320 kilometers from the Nacozari district in Sonora, Mexico to the Silver Bell Mountains west of Tucson, Arizona. Several major porphyry copper systems occur within this plutonic belt including the Red Mountain deposit found at the northern end of the Patagonia Mountains. Data from more than 80 mineral deposits within the Patagonia Mountains show metal zoning symmetrical to the Patagonia granodiorite (Graybeal, 1975). Disseminated copper-molybdenum deposits occur within the batholith. Pyrometa-somatic, limestone replacement and vein deposits of copper, lead, zinc and silver occur in the wallrocks adjacent to the. granodiorite and epithermal manganese-silver deposits occur at the outer periphery of economic mineralization. GEOLOGY OF THE WASHINGTON CAMP - DUQUESNE DISTRICT Stratigraphy Nearly 900 meters of miogeosynclinal Permian and Pennsylvanian sediments are exposed in the district (Figure 2). In addition, 700 meters of older Paleozoic rocks crop out 6 kilometers north of the district. The Paleozoic rocks occur in fault contact with a sequence of Triassic-Jurassic pyroclastic and flow rocks, ranging in composition from latite to rhyolite.

"Control of fugitive dust in high latitude open-pit mines is challenging due to unique atmospheric phenomenon resulting in complicated flow regimes, and atmospheric inversion due to lack of adequate solar insolation during prolonged winter seasons. In this study, two idealized (One conical and one trapezoidal) three-dimensional open-pit mine geometries are simulated for differing seasonal conditions using the CRADLE-CFD package. The airflow is modeled using Standard Kappa-Epsilon Turbulence Model solved by RANS equations. The concept of particle tracking is used to predict the flow pattern of dust particles. For various climatic conditions, and two different pit geometries, fugitive dust particles varying in size (PM0.1 to PM10) and concentration are generated at various locations of a mine and dispersed by the airflow pattern inside the open-pit mine. The amount and location of dust particles inside the pit is reported at various time intervals. The development of atmospheric inversion during the winter season significantly affected the amount of dust retention inside the open-pit domain. While during the summer, airborne dust particles were transported outside the open-pit domain in a short time. INTRODUCTIONComputational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of open-pit mines is challenging. In a recent paper, Bhowmick et. al. [1] presented different constraints and challenges in developing a 3-Dimensional CFD model. In order to obtain realistic results from a simulation, however, appropriate values of various inputs are required. Simulation results of a 3D non-hydrostatic model by Shi et al. [2] showed that both the mechanical and thermal forcing are important mechanisms, controlling the development of the atmosphere inside an open-pit. Alvarez et al [3] used a CFD model for predicting dust dispersions in a medium sized limestone quarry, and presented several iso-surfaces of varying dust concentrations using ANSYS CFX. A similar study by Torno et al [4] introduced a more sophisticated parameterization of the dust sources. Flores et al. [5] used an OpenFOAM CFD simulation package to simulate and predict pollutant dispersion in an idealized and an actual open-pit mine in Chile with an intense insolation condition. The model was simulated for three different conditions: (i) air advection (10 m/s) driven mechanical turbulence; (ii) surface heat flux (240 W/m2) driven thermal buoyancy; and (iii) both air advection and surface heat flux driven conditions. The results of the simulations showed that the buoyant currents contribute to the removal of a large percentage of the dust particles. The buoyant currents modify the purely mechanical-turbulence induced flow pattern and reduce the particle residence time, commonly observed in a purely mechanical turbulent flow (non-buoyant case)"

Exploration of new resources and development of new equipment and designs are an ever changing facet of mining. New equipment to handle specialized operations is being developed and new techniques for its use explored. One such system is reviewed. Another is a potential system for handling the thinner stray coal seams between the more profitable thick seams. The availability of federal coal leases in the West is reviewed and current planning discussed. Gulf Coast lignites have been of much interest in recent months and are overviewed.

Due to improvements in the safety of other aspects of mining (primarily in roof control), haulage related accidents, particularly rail haulage accidents, are about to become the most common category of hazards causing death and injuries to underground coal miners. The major causes of these accidents are collisions between vehicles, men caught between rib and trip or between cars, derailments, and runaway cars. Such hazards can be greatly reduced if the motorman has the capability to selectively couple and uncouple cars from the cab of the locomotive, to transmit braking intelligence to the coupled cars, to determine if the trip is intact, and if brakes are automatically applied in any uncoupled car. These capabilities can be provided through an improved coupler system, designed and built by Foster-Miller Associates under a Bureau of Mines contract. Early in the program, a survey of rail haulage patents and literature was conducted. Manufacturers of couplers, mine cars and braking systems were contacted and information relevant to the remote control mine haulage application was collected. From this information evolved a working specification and a design concept. The key elements of the specification, shown in Table I, are the result of a detailed tradeoff study and considerable thought given to the specific problems encountered in the mining environment. A brief explanation of each element is as follows: Automatic Coupling - The couplers operate similarly with most already in underground use - they latch together when a trip is backed into a car intended for coupling. Remote Uncoupling - From the locomotive, the motorman can decide how many cars are to be uncoupled, operate the appropriate controls, and the desired coupler is opened.

Coal conversion to electricity or to substitute natural gas requires a significant quantity of natural and human resources including, in addition to the coal resource base, land, water and the construction and operating labor force. Each method of coal conversion has its advantages and disadvantages relative to conversion efficiency, preferred method of resultant energy transportation, resources consumed, and impact on the environment. Regulations which have been passed in recent years to maintain or restore the pre-project environment can add significantly to the capital and operating costs of both a conversion facility and its associated mine.

The U.S. Department of Energy continued this effort as of October 1977. This paper represents an update of an article previously published in Mining Engineering magazine (Mayercheck, 1979). Development progress is summarized for a variety of prototype systems or components now being built, surface tested, or tried underground.

When it comes to safety in the mining and extractive industries, success is literally a matter of life and death. Anything short of perfection is not acceptable. In recent years, the mining industry in the United States has made tremendous strides in terms of health and safety for its workers. Part of that success has come with an increased focus on the issues of safety, an intense examination of procedures, liberal sharing of best practices and a focus on the synergy between safety, reliability and environment. During his closing keynote address of the Safety Management & System Reliability Conference in Minneapolis, MN on Nov. 15, Joe Driscoll, vice president of Great Basin Gold, showed a calendar from the coal fields in Pennsylvania from the early 1900s. The calendar marked the number of mine-related deaths each month. Some months, the number was as high as 50. It was an illustration of how far things have come, but there is still much more work to be done.

"Construction projects involve a great many risks. The risk that material prices will increase during construction or that the work under construction will be destroyed by fire, storm or some other act of God are just a few examples. In tunneling or other underground projects, one of the most significant risks is that the subsurface conditions encountered during construction will differ from what is expected. Each of these risks must be accounted for, managed and, ultimately, the duty of one party or the other to bear. The primary tool used to allocate the risks among the parties is the construction contract.How construction contracts allocate the risk that subsurface conditions will differ have changed substantially over the past century. Today, construction contracts typically allocate the risk through a series of provisions. The first is the differing site condition or changed condition clause. That clause, when included, typically provides that the owner bears the risk that the subsurface conditions will differ from what is indicated in the contract documents or what is reasonably expected. The second clause is one that provides that the contractor must conduct a reasonable site investigation and bear the risk of any conditions that such an investigation would reveal. The third provision includes disclaimers that are often included in geotechnical data provided by the owner (or the owner’s engineer) to the contractor which attempts to limit the information on which the contractor can rely. Because these risk-allocating devices seem to be somewhat conflicting, a brief discussion of each provides critical insight in understanding how the modern construction contract allocates the risk of differing site conditions.At the start of the 20th century, construction contracts looked substantially different than they do today. For example, one contract for the construction of a public water tunnel in Chicago, IL, drafted around 1895 contained the following clause:The contractor must take the work entirely at his own risk. No extra allowance will be made for quicksand, hardpan or boulders."

Abstract, Syngenetic uranium in pre metamorphic Idaho Springs volcanics and sediments probably, was mobilized during metamorphism (1.7 b.y.) and partly retained along unconformities. Precambrian Silver Plume intrusives (1.4 b.y.) and Pikes Peak granite (1.0 b.y.) may have mobilized uranium from the craton and. Idaho Springs metamorphics to concentrate it in cauldron sites in migmatites, pegmatites, alaskite, disseminations and greissen. Tertiary intrusives also may have upgraded uranium by anatexis, leaching and differentiation. Tertiary vein and shear zone uranium mineralization may have-been-derived from underlying magma sources, leached from Idaho Springs metamorphics and from syngenetic leaching of overlying sediments and introduced by deep hydrothermal convection systems.

Three transportation systems in surface coal mines: 1-Truck Haulage, 2-Belt Conveying, and 3-Coarse-Coal Slurry Transportation are compared from the operations and cost point of Views. Computerized design and cost models were developed and cost data banks were compiled for each system. These models can be used to evaluate transportation systems and layouts that are practiced in most of the U.S. surface coal mines. A typical midwestern area strip mine was considered for illustration purposes. Sensitivity analysis on critical parameters such as production rate, transportation, distance, etc. was conducted and the outcomes are presented.

Abstract. Leaching of, uranium in situ from sandstone deposits with ammonium carbonate solution containing: dissolved oxygen occurs rapidly compared with the leaching of the bulk of the sulfur present as FeS2. However because of their high reducing, capacity and their relative abundance, the FeS2 minerals consume; the bulk of the oxidants A pressure leach apparatus was-construtted which permitted the measurement of oxygen consumtion by FeS2. Oxygen consumption by FeS2 is best described by a first-order reaction. The experimental rate constants for various cores are roughly proportional to their FeS2 contents.

"BACKGROUND As of December 2015, there are roughly 475 road tunnels within the United States according to the most recent national tunnel inventory data compiled by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA); whereas, there are more than 615,000 highway bridges on public roads. The FHWA estimates that tunnels represent nearly 100 miles of Interstates, State routes, and local routes. Tunnels are part of the national transportation infrastructure and represent a significant financial investment for the owner and, hence, the tax payers. Tunnels, that are not properly maintained, usually require more extensive repairs and consume more resources. Tunnels must provide safe, reliable, and effective transportation even as these structures age and deteriorate. Furthermore, tunnels generally remain in service for extended periods of time due to their very high construction costs. For example, many tunnels were constructed decades ago during two historic periods of highway system expansion; the first period correlated with the era of public works programs linked to the Great Depression of the 1930-40s; and the second period of expansion occurred with the building of the interstate highway system in the 1950-60s. As such, these tunnels are fast approaching 60 to 80 years old. Congress enacted the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21), which was signed by the President on July 6, 2012. This legislation followed a fatal tunnel incident on July 10, 2006 and a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report1 that noted the importance of conducting regular tunnel inspections. MAP-21 authorized the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to develop a mandatory inspection program for all tunnels on all public roadways (Bergeson and Ernst 2015): To help safeguard tunnel users and to ensure reliable levels of service, the FHWA developed the National Tunnel Inspection Program (NTIP), which is comprised of the National Tunnel Inspection Standards (NTIS), the Tunnel Operations Maintenance Inspection and Evaluation (TOMIE) Manual, the Specifications for National Tunnel Inventory (SNTI), and the Manual for Bridge Evaluation (MBE). The data collected from the program will be stored in a National Tunnel Inventory (NTI) database. A comprehensive and refresher training program was also developed to help qualify and certify key tunnel inspection personnel to include the program manager and team leader."

Leaching titaniferous magnetite concentrate with alkali solution of high concentration under high temperature and high pressure was utilized to improve the grade of iron in iron concentrate and the grade of TiO2 in titanium tailings. The titaniferous magnetite concentrate in use contained 12.67% TiO2 and 54.01% Fe. The thermodynamics of the possible reactions and the kinetics of leaching process were analyzed. It was found that decomposing FeTiO3 with NaOH aqueous solution could be carried out spontaneously and the reaction rate was mainly controlled by internal diffusion. The effects of water usage, alkali concentration, reaction time, and temperature on the leaching procedure were inspected, and the products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. After NaOH leaching and magnetic separation, the concentrate, with Fe purity of 65.98% and Fe recovery of 82.46%, and the tailings, with TiO2 purity of 32.09% and TiO2 recovery of 80.79%, were obtained, respectively.

As the number of prime surface coal mining sites diminishes with time and with the potential for increased coal demand, areas that were previously not mined because of their difficult mining conditions, marginal economics, and controversial environmental nature, will have to be considered if surface coal mining is to continue in the future. Such sites include areas near major rivers, streams, and lakes. The name most commonly given to these areas by regulatory agencies is "wetlands". The exact definition(s) to the term "wetland" will be discussed later in this paper. Most coal operators are now more than familiar with permitting requirements under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA). The SMCRA permanent regulatory program recognizes the fact that coal mining operations will periodically encounter streams, wetlands, etc. Although discussed in various sections of the permanent program regulations, the relationship of coal mining operations to wetlands is particularly evident in the performance standards regarding hydrologic balance and protection of fish, wildlife and related environmental values.

A thorough geological engineering investigation is required before surface lands overlying abandoned underground mines can be safely recommended as building sites. The major problems confronting the geological engineer are assembling accurate geologic and mining information and developing an accurate rock mechanics model of the situation. A successful investigation requires a combination of technical expertise in rock mechanics and engineering geology tempered with practical engineering judgment. The results of a good study are not always favorable to the prospective builder.

In the defunct Gorka quarry, there are situated both a waste disposal site of an area of 6.7 ha and containing approximately 1 million ton of high aluminium wastes and a pond of an area of roughly 3 ha, up to 15 m deep, with about 400000 m3 of polluted water. The reservoir is fed with the filtrates arriving from the disposal site mentioned, at a rate ~130 m3/day. An alarming phenomenon is the subsidence of the pond bottom and the infiltration of solutions into the Triassic and Jurassic water resources, assessed at ~40 m3/ day. The basic problem related to the effluents in the Gorka pond is their high alkalinity (pH 12-13.4) and variable pollutants whose level increases appreciably with the pond?s depth. The solution offered provides pumping out and treatment of about 500000m3 of effluents retained in the Gorka reservoir in an about yearly time. Effluents would be treated in a reverse osmosis plant, according to a process so far verified on a quarter-commercial scale. The treatment process by-product would be discharged into the Ropa stream. The brine solution (containing about 25% NaCl), whose amount may reach up to100000m3, might be supplied to the Debiensko Mine which produces technological salt from salt-bearing mine waters. Similarly, there would be provided an intake of underflows of infiltrates (by means of deep wells, and possibly girdling ditches) arriving from the high aluminum site, and such effluents would be subject to ongoing dilution in water courses. It would be possible to test the system of underflows reaching the Gorka reservoir by means of geochemical identification, previously performed. The next stage following the pumping, would be the utilization of approx. 50 000m3 of bottom slurry. Highly alkaline slurries would be utilized in the production of self-solidifying mixtures. Slurries would be pumped out and temporarily dumped on drying beds, located nearby the Gorka reservoir, and later on used successively for making self-solidifying mixtures in a plant similar to a concrete making seat. Those mixtures would be applied for sealing the bottom of the Gorka reservoir and the necessary part of the edges of the defunct quarry. An alternative solution is the utilization of slurries in the facilities of the Trzebionka Mining Works and the application of self-solidifying mixtures, made in the Trzebionka Works, for sealing the reservoir bottom.
