The design and construction of a Concentrator based on initial pilot plant work is rarely perfect. Palabora's plant was no exception although the basic objective to produce copper in a safely conservative manner was certainly achieved in a profitable manner. identification of the metallurgical and mechanical deficiencies of the plant through operating experience and a better concept of the minerology of the orebody enabled the development of a more efficient process both in terms of the metallurgical performance and cost effectiveness. To maintain and improve this level of efficiency, continuous inspection and revision of the plant metallurgy and engineering standards is required. In this presentation a few of the investigations and changes are described: 1.0 Alternative methods to restrict and eliminate the detrimental effect of critical size material on the performance of an autogenous mill. 2.0 An analysis of the environmental condi¬tions in Palabora's grinding circuit and the introduction of high chrome balls as grinding media. 3.0 The role of magnetite in the beneficiation process at Palabora. 1.0 Alternative methods to restrict and eliminate the detrimental effect of critical size material on the performance of an autogenous mill.

"In 2008, the world quietly hit a milestone that did not receive much fanfare or publicity, but it hit one that marked a turning point in the history of mankind and the way the planet is and will be inhabited in the future. It was in 2008 that, for the first time, more than half of the world’s population, an estimated 3.3 billion people, resided in urban areas. The world’s population had moved from being a majority of agricultural and rural society to an urban society. Andrew Whalley, deputy chairman for Grimshaw Architects, said this change in where and how people live will continue to increase urban populations and, by 2050, it is estimated that more than 6.4 billion people will live in urban areas. To meet these needs, Whalley, speaking during the keynote session of the 2105 Cutting Edge conference in Denver, CO, said future cities will have to be reimagined and redesigned to be more efficient. A large part of that design will be in the infrastructure of those cities.At the Fourth Annual Cutting Edge Conference, Sept. 21-23, much of the discussion was around how the tunneling and underground construction industries improve cities in a number of ways, including societal, environmental and in overall efficiency. There was talk, not just about the improvements that society enjoys at the completion of such projects, but also about the challenges faced by the owner and contractor in the construction of such projects.The conference, titled Urban Tunneling, brought together some of the top minds in the industry to not only discuss the issues faced today, but also those that will shape the industry in the future.For his part, Whalley spoke about a number of projects around the world and how they have impacted society in ways beyond simply providing a better means for transportation of people or water. Notably, he spoke about the Crossrails project in London.London is a city of 8.6 million people and a history that dates back nearly 2,000 years. It is a great example of the challenges the industry faces in bringing modern efficiencies to an established city.Running more than 100 km (62 miles) with more than 42 km (26 miles) of tunnels passing through 40 stations, including 10 new stations, the project is the largest in Europe and will transform the way people move about the city."

The presence of appreciable quantity of clay mineral in Indian hematite ore needs an attrition technique using screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit to remove the ultrafine clays and avoid downstream operational problems. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that iron ore samples obtained from the Barbil region of Odisha contain a high amount of silica and alumina in the form of clay minerals (e.g., kaolinite) contributed as a loss on ignition (LOI) in the iron-making process. Iron ore fines of below 10 mm size were subjected to a laboratory-scale screw scrubber, and the effectiveness of scrubbing as well as the pelletization of the scrubbed product was investigated. The screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit helps to remove the clay minerals, causes an increase in iron values from 63.65% Fe(T) to 66.18%Fe(T), with improved physical (CCS of 325 kg/pellet) and metallurgical (RDI of 2.24%) pellet properties.

Regulations, such as the MINER Act of 2006, require the installation of redundant and secondary communication systems to assure that contact can be established with coal miners who may become trapped underground as a result of an event such as a fire, explosion or inundation. For half a century, the orientation towards underground communications has been that more complex systems better serve the coal miner. However, if a goal is to provide for an alternative means of establishing communication between the surface and trapped miners underground, then some of the technology employed should be simple, reliable and cost-effective. Coal mines spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on exploratory drillholes to characterize reserves, sometimes decades ahead of mine development. During the pre-mine planning phases, certain exploratory drillholes could be located and then outfitted with a simple communication link that would remain compatible with the continuing evolution of communication systems. Inexpensive links, whose locations would be accurately recorded, would be exposed by continuous miners during mine entry development, thereby allowing an underground phone to be connected to a surface station in the event of an emergency. A latent network of these communication links could be installed for less than $500 each, minimally affecting drilling and grouting operations, and could be designed to be compatible with many communication devices. This research examines methods and materials for incorporating an embedded communication link during pre-mine exploration drilling, addresses significant factors affecting its implementation, and presents a recommended design. Since mine plans are known to change, the objective is to minimize cost so that, if not used, the investment is minimal for a potential secondary means of communication between the surface and underground workings.

The Three Rivers Protection & Overflow Reduction Tunnel is part of the Long-Term Control Plan of the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana (USA). The 4.9 m internal diameter tunnel, of length approximately 7.5 km, is excavated at a depth of approximately 40–60 m through carbonate rocks using a slurry TBM. Due to the high hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass and the high in-situ ground water pressure (up to 6.5 bar), the management of the water inflow during the TBM advance and standstills, represents the major challenge for the project. This paper outlines the geotechnical conditions and the hazards related to the large water inflows expected in the pre-excavation phase and discusses the experience gained during the construction of the first 8,224 feet (2,507 m), (first third of the total length of the tunnel).

"Over the years, the decline of high grade ores have become an increasing problem in the global mining industry. As such, techniques and chemistries must change in order to continue to meet the market demand and quality. Reverse cationic flotation of quartz and silicates is one of the most important techniques for generating the industry standard product from minerals such as iron and phosphate ores. Amine collectors are the global standard in such processes. However, as the ore quality continues to decline so must the chemistry change to meet the change in ore composition. This paper will focus on the introduction and full scale application of a novel amine collector towards a cleaner flotation process in phosphate beneficiation with Crago process. The results suggests the collector is capable of improving the phosphate recovery, in this cleaner circuit, to approximately 94% with minimal sensitivity to the everyday changes in feed grade.INTRODUCTION The days of mining high grade minerals are long gone, but the demand continues to increase. Phosphate ore, for example, is most dominantly demanded from the agriculture industry as a fertilizer component (i.e. diammonium phosphate, DAP) (FAO, 2014). Some literature suggests that global food production must increase by approximately 70% by 2050 (Cordell, 2009). It is also suggested that the peak global phosphorus production will occur around the year 2033, which is the period at which the easily accessible reserves have been depleted. Currently, phosphorus is commonly mined with a BPL (Bone Phosphate of Lime) concentration of 12-20% and a remainder typically being gangue minerals such as silica, clays, metal oxides, calcareous minerals, and carbonaceous minerals. These gangue components can lead to various negative processing and utilization consequences. Calcium, from carbonaceous minerals, is problematic due to the elevated levels of sulfuric acid required to convert the phosphate rock to the acid form (SRI Consulting, 2009). Calcium can also lead to elevated dosages of flotation reagents due to the desire of the fatty acid to coordinate to calcium minerals. Carbonate leads to increased levels of foam during the wet acid process. Silica is associated with the level of insols (acid insolubles), which must be less than 10% in the final concentrate that will be transferred to the chemical plant for acidification. Phosphate ore can generally be classified as carbonaceous or siliceous (El-Shall, 2003). Siliceous ores are commonly processed through various sizing steps followed by multi-staged flotation (Figure 1) (FIPR, 2014 & Güven, 2010). Though the higher grade phosphate pebble is declining, many mines are still able to size good enough to produce some amount of such pebble. Unlike most metal flotation processes where grinding is a necessity for an optimal process, Florida phosphate flotation does not generally require aggressive grinding and can typically operate at 0.1-1.0 mm. The rougher flotation step applies pH modification to achieve the optimal pH of 8.8-9.3 followed by conditioning with a fatty acid type collector, which builds a hydrophobic waxy layer on the surface of the particle to assist in the flotation. This generally achieves higher than 85% recovery of a product with 50-60% BPL and 15-30% insols. Unfortunately, DAP production generally requires 3.5 tons of phosphate rock containing greater than 63% BPL to produce 1 ton of phosphoric acid (ArgusMedia, 2014). Thus, further purification is required to achieve the grade by the chemical plant for fertilizer production. After the fatty acid is scrubbed off the phosphate particles using sulfuric acid (pH 2.5-3.5), the pH is generally operationally readjusted to 6.5-7.2 by washing with “fresh” water. A second collector is applied prior to the cleaner, which is a reverse cationic flotation process. This collector is typically a cationic amine based reagent, which should have an affinity for silica containing mineral"

Tunnel approach structures situated in slow moving earth flows are subjected to significant earth pressures. The authors have developed a system, utilizing collapsible concrete columns, that limits such loading. The system uses an array of collapsible concrete columns in front of the structure to absorb downslope movement and limit-imposed loads. This concept has been modelled using 3D FEM analyses and a rudimental lab test. For implementation, the collapsible columns would be prefabricated in strengths to mimic the soil strength profile. This concept has merit, and analytical results demonstrate that collapsible columns are a viable means to limit loading.

This work describes a leaching process for the conversion of high-magnesium peridotite rock, which is a chromite ore overburden, into two valuable products: magnesium salts and micro silica. Under normal leaching conditions, residue remaining after leaching is of a gelatinous nature and thus hinders the filtration process. To address this issue, oxidative leaching with the addition of H2O2 was employed, and it significantly improved the filtration kinetics. Four different approaches for H2O2 addition were tried, and they all proved effective in controlling gelation. The optimum oxidative leaching condition was 70 °C, 2 h time, 2 M H2SO4, 0.5MH2O2 and 400 RPM; under these conditions, 92% magnesium leaching efficiency was achieved. After leaching, the leach liquor obtained was purified and dried into Mg(OH)2 and MgSO4 salts. The leach residue contained mainly silica particles, with size in the 10–30 μm range. This material thus represents an attractive candidate for the production of highperformance concrete for the construction industry. The oxidative leaching process described here enabled the complete conversion of peridotite into valuable products, magnesium salts and micro silica.

GEOLOGICAL NOTES The area under discussion is situated approximately 150 m north of Loraine No. 3 shaft at ± 1500 m below surface. The block being mined extends from about halfway between 50 and 52 levels to just below 48 level (see Fig. 1). The EB reefs form the lower portion of the EB zone of the Elsburg series and in the 81 line area the various conglomerate bands show the best development. Up to 18 separate reef bands are developed and the distance from the bottom conglomerate band to the top is ± 26 m. The thickness of the quartzite which forms the middling between the various reef bands varies from 0.1 to 2 m. The strike is roughly north-¬south. The reef bands are payable individually. However, owing to the steepness of the reefs and their close prox¬imity, conventional mining would prove very difficult. The nonpayable reef bands all carry varying amounts of gold and the whole area is a massive payable reef body approximately 26 m wide and 60 m high at 300 to 400 m on strike. The major structure of the area consists of a north¬-south trending syncline. The western flank of the syncline has a steep easterly dip, in places approaching the vertical. This flank cuts out against the overlying rocks of the EA zone. The latter forms a noncon¬formity with the underlying EB zone. The eastern flank of the syncline dips to the west at an average dip of 0.17 rad (10°). The 0.1 rad (6°) north-plunging syncline was sub¬jected to severe faulting. The most important are the Nos. 4 and 10 faults, both of which have a roughly north-south strike. The No. 4 fault dips to the west at an angle of 1.04 rad (60°) with a downthrow of approximately 150 m to the west. The dip of the No. 10 fault is 0.69 to 0.81 rad (40° to 50°) west, with the western block having moved 150 m updip relative to the eastern block. The EB reefs are being mined by the sublevel stoping method down from the sub-outcrop position to the cutoff against the No. 4 fault. On the downthrow side of the No. 10 fault, that is just above the 54 level, two reef bands are payable and will be mined conven¬tionally. ROCK MECHANICS From the section in Fig. 1, it can be seen that the area under consideration is surrounded by stoped-out areas. This will naturally change the stress distribution extensively. The only way to calculate the stress field for such a geometry is to use the finite element method. It was established that this method worked for the present geometry and so the method was applied to predict the stress behavior of the final geometry. From the results, it appeared that the effect of the old stopes was to destress the area. There are, however, some areas-such as the 50 and 48 north footwall haulages-which will require continuous attention. Distinct trends in grinding mill technology have emerged in recent years. In an effort to optimize overall mill performance for the needs of the End User, broad measures of logistical speed, process flexibility, operational risk, and overall costs now exert greater influence on the specification of grinding equipment. As a result, innovative alternatives to conventional grinding mill structures, supports, drives, feed, and discharge configurations are now being offered and selected with greater frequency. This paper investigates these trends in grinding mill technology, utilizing optimization and decision-theory techniques. In particular, the paper considers how specific advances in process design, product engineering, manufacturing techniques, and mining operations continue to relax technological constraints, enabling further mill innovation. In this context, a methodology is presented, illustrating how proper selection and specification of grinding mill components and configuration can target an optimization of the four End-User performance measures listed above..

Platinum-group metal (PGM) converter matte from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to chemical and biological leaching in an effort to upgrade the matte by decreasing the Cu and Ni content. Copper and NL extractions were optimized in a two-stage chemical leach. Atmospheric pressure sulfuric acid leaching removed over 90 pct of the Ni and Fe in the first stage, while 95 to 98 pct of the Cu was removed is the second stage using an acidified cupric chloride leach. This two-stage leach, followed by an elemental sulfur removal step, decreased the weight of the matte by 90 pct. The combined Cu and Ni content was reduced from 65 pct to less than 20 pct, while the PGM content was increased from less than 2 pct to 26 pct. Biological oxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans also proved to be an effective method for removing Cu and Ni. Over 90 pct of the sulfide was oxidized and 99 pct of the Cu and Ni were solubilized, leading to a 60 pct reduction of sample mass during the 17 week bio-oxidation of the Stillwater converter matte. The final residue, after removal of jarosite that accumulated during bio-oxidation, contained less than 3 pct combined Cu and Ni and 6 pct MM.

The deposition of metastable carbonate minerals in ar. aid, sheltered, coastal environment, leads to the formation of a flat, coastel, sabkha plain. The ground waters of the sabkha plain are modified by evaporation, precipitation of salts and reaction between ions in solution and the host carbonates. The resulting brine is similar to those found in fluid inclusions associated with Mississippi Valley type deposits. The aragonite and high magnesium calcite found in the sediments can concentrate lead and zinc from sea water. On diagenesis the lead and zinc are released into the sabkha brines.

Surface mining refers to the process of removing the material (over- burden) overlying a coal seam and exposing the coal so that it can be loaded out and conveyed by trucks or other methods to the preparation plant or other facility. Surface mining has not always been important in the coal industry. In the early 1900s, almost all of the coal mined in the United States was mined by underground methods. In 1900, about 192 Mt (212 million st) of bituminous coal were mined and less than 1% was mined by surface methods. The development and use of larger equipment has allowed surface mining to gain prominence throughout the years. Table 1 shows the total production of coal by mining method in the United States for ten-year periods since 1920 and indicates the growth of surface-mined coal production. Surface mining will undoubtedly continue to account for a large percentage of the coal production in the US for many years because: 1) The capacity of surface mining excavators has continued to increase. Today, mining companies are using shovels (see Fig. 1) which are able to move up to 137.6 m3 (180 cu yd) in each bite and draglines (see Fig. 2) which move up to 168.2 m3 (220 cu yd) in each bucketful. 2) Increasing tonnage from the thick western coal seams is being produced by surface mining methods. 3) Surface mining has normally had lower costs and a better safety record than underground mining; 4) Surface mining normally recovers a- much higher percentage of the coal reserve than can be recovered by underground mining. 5) Some coal measures can best be extracted by surface mining [ ] methods because of geologic reasons such as the nature of the roof or bottom, thickness of the seam, multiple bedding, etc.

Respirable rock dust poses serious long-term health effects to workers in mining and tunneling underground hard rock environments. When inhaled, respirable silica particles commonly found in quartz and other minerals will scar sensitive lung tissue and cause irreversible lung diseases. Characteristics such as concentration, type of mineral, particle size, and particle shape inhaled can harm workers to various extents. Therefore, this study characterizes rock dust particles less than 100µm in aerodynamic diameter that are released from cutting hard rock in the underground mining environment. In this study, laboratory full scale cutting tests on samples of potash rock were performed with radial picks to generate dust. Three stages of pick wear were tested: new, moderately worn, and severely worn. Comparisons between different stages of pick wear to dust concentration, size distribution, and particle shape characteristics are drawn from this study to start determining the scenarios when the released airborne dusts become potentially most hazardous for workers. Although further testing needs to be conducted to make viable conclusions, the moderately worn pick, or the pick with the most blunt tip, in these experiments are potentially the most dangerous. The blunt pick tip released the highest concentration of dust and generated particle shapes with the highest aspect ratio compared to the other two picks. The preliminary results of this study allow for the further development of optimum bit management and maintenance systems to control the exposure of respirable dust to mine workers.

The floatability of a typical boron mineral, colemanite (Ca2B6O11.5H2O), is shown to be hindered by the presence of montmorillonite type clay minerals. The clay is found to act in the form of slime coating. The mechanism of slime coating is investigated using pure colemanite and clay and their mixtures with an anionic reagent in a microflotation cell. Adsorption, flotation, solubility, zeta potential and scanning electron microscope studies reveal that slime coating occurs through electrostatic attraction. It is possible to minimize the effect of slime coating either at high surfactant concentration or at high pH values.

Throughout time, the mining industry has been very successful in meeting the world's requirements for metals and materials while meeting the challenges of decreasing ore grades and increased emphasis on protection of the environment. This success has been due to the development and implementation of new technologies. A clear example of such a development over the past 25 years is the increasing use of leaching/solvent extraction/electrowinning for the recovery of copper from oxide and sulfide ores. The key to the successful introduction of this technology was the discovery and development of the hydroxyoxime liquid ion exchange reagents by General Mills Chemicals (now Henkel Corporation). An important role was also played by the close working relationships between General Mills Chemicals and Ranchers Exploration which resulted in startup of the first plant in 1968 and between General Mills Chemicals and Bagdad Copper which resulted in the startup of the second copper SX-EW plant in August of 1970. Following on the heels of the hydroxyoxime development came the commercialization of other new chelating reagents based on different chemical functionalities, i.e., beta-diketones, alkylated 8- hydroxyquinolines and sulfonamidoquinolines. This initial spurt of activity was then followed by a slowing of development in terms of new reagent functionalities. Activity has continued in terms of further optimization/improvement of existing reagent functionalities but the commercialization of new reagent functionalities has slackened. This observation reflects the fact that the development of new reagent functionalities for metal recovery has become increasingly more expensive such that the right combination of price and sales volume must exist in order to justify the investment required to bring a new reagent to the market place. Given the dependence of the mining industry on innovation to meet the needs of the future, one can ask how these new developments, particularly in new reagents, will occur. Rare earth elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential in a multitude of mundane and sophisticated applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts, medicine, and defense applications. The global supply deficit could be attributed to the destabilization of REE market that has, as a result, incentivized indigenous production of REEs. Cost-effective and environmentally benign opportunities are being explored for the production of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources including coal and coal by-products to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Healy coal mine and Wishbone Hill deposits in Alaska have been quantified for REEs and were found to possess elevated total REE concentrations as compared to world average levels (60– 70 ppm). The objective of the study was to concentrate the REEs in the froth phase by froth-flotation of the fine size fraction (< 75 μm). A Box-Behnken design of experiment was employed to ascertain the main and interaction effects of operational parameters on response variable by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Experiments were carried out to maximize REE recovery and concentration by modeling and optimization of three operating variables (frother dosage, pulp density (% solids), and collector dosage). Based on the results, the optimum flotation conditions for maximum recovery at an elevated concentration of REEs in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy sample and 10% solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic relationship between the input and response variable was found to be independent of collector dosage suggesting good surface hydrophobicity and floatability of the two coal samples.

PolyMet Mining is developing the NorthMet property near Duluth, MN. Laboratory investigations have led to the development of the Platsol process to dissolve in one step the base metals (copper and nickel) as well as the gold and platinum group metals (PGM). To complete the prefeasibility study, a fully integrated, 10-day pilot plant trial was undertaken. The trial consisted of high-temperature (>220ºC or >428ºF) pressure oxidation in the presence of 5 to 10 g/L chloride (the Platsol process). This was followed by solid/liquid separation, gold plus PGM recovery from solution, conventional copper solvent extractions/electrowinning (SX/EW) and recycling of the copper raffinate to the autoclave. The concentrate tested during the trial period was a NorthMet bulk flotation concentrate. It assayed 14.7% Cu, 3.05% Ni, 0.14% Co, 26.7% S, 1.4 g/t (0.041 oz/st) Au, 2.2 g/t (0.064 oz/st) Pt and 9.9 g/t (0.289 oz/st) Pd Laboratory results were confirmed and, with minor adjustments of the laboratory Platsol conditions, the following leach extractions were obtained during the pilot plant trial: 99.6% Cu, 98.9% Ni, 96% Co, 94.6% Pd, 96 % Pt and 89.4 % Au.

This study was initiated to investigate the occurrence of cinnabar in the oxidation zones of some mercury sulfide deposits. Seven mines or mine districts were visited and samples were taken from both the oxidation and primary zones of these deposits in order to compare their mineralogies and assess Vie chemical changes that took place during oxidation. As a result of the study of these specimens, several limiting factors are suggested for the chemical environments and processes active in both the deposition and oxidation of mercury sulfide deposits. The Mt. Jackson mine, near Guerneville, California (location map, fig. 1), was studied in some detail and forms the basis of this paper. The mine has not heretofore been described in detail in the literature. The Mt. Jackson mine is considered typical of mercury sulfide deposits occurring at the faulted boundaries of serpentinite bodies and enclosing sediments. Such mines are common in the California and Oregon Coast Ranges? Specimens collected by the author from the New Idria and New Almaden districts, the Mt. Diablo, the Culver Bear, and the Buena Vista mines in California, and the Opalite district (Cordero and Bretz, mines) on the Oregon-Nevada border were studied for comparison with the Mt. Jackson samples. The mine description, maps and sketches were composed from field maps kindly provided by Francis Fredericks, consulting geologist to the Sonoma Quick-silver Mine Inc. during the author&apos;s visit in 1962. Additional information was obtained from the company maps and minor corrections and interpretations were added by the author.

The last MINExpo, in 2008, had nearly 38,500 visitors. The show?s sponsor, the National Mining Association, expects this year will be even bigger, with more than 40,000 visitors over three days. Twenty talks on the issues facing mining today are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, but the real action will happen out on the floor. That?s where ultra haul trucks big enough to carry as much as 363 t (400 st) of rock will be assembled next to underground loaders able to lift more than 20 t (22 st) in one scoop. Caterpillar, Komatsu, Liebherr, Sandvik, Atlas Copco: all the big names in mining equipment will be there. Their massive earthmoving equipment and mining machines are the centerpiece of the show. Preassembly for the largest pieces begins on August 6, 2012.
