Cable bolts anchored with traditional two component polyester resin cartridges have successfully supported difficult roof conditions in underground mines. Resin cartridges provide a cost-effective cable bolt anchoring system with consistent anchorage performance characteristics when properly installed. The most commonly used cable bolts in the U.S. mining industry are 270 ksi (1,862 MPa), 0.7 and 0.6 inch (18 and 15 mm), seven-strand smooth cable with resin mixing bulbs (also known as bird cages), and 40- and 30-ton nominal capacity, respectively. However, there are other types of cable bolt anchoring systems aside from bird cages. Recently, many questions have been raised regarding the anchorage characteristics of various types of cable bolts. Keystone Mining Services, LLC (KMS), the affiliated engineering company of Jennmar Corporation, conducted a variety of controlled tests developed to closely model actual underground installations. These tests compared the performance of three commonly used cable bolt varieties, including plain, bird caged and indented seven-strand cable. Details of the laboratory testing and comparative analysis of the results are provided.

The failure of coal ribs is a major hazard in underground coal mines. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have been working on the development of an engineering-based rib control method. A user-friendly standalone application, called Design of Rib Support (DORS), is being developed to ease the calculations of rib support. DORS can estimate the Primary Rib Support Density (PRSD, ton/ft2) for development loading. However, it still needs to take account of another key factor, bolt length, in rib support design. The bolt length can be estimated from the rib fracture depth, and this study focuses on the coal rib fracture depth analysis with numerical modeling and artificial neural network. A total of 331 FLAC3D simulations with different mining scenarios and rib conditions were conducted for this study. Machine learning was then used to predict coal rib fracture depth under different conditions. Based on the numerical simulations, the parameters for mining scenarios and rib conditions were collected as features for machine learning, and coal rib fracture depths were collected as the target to predict. The Society for Mining Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) has a long and proud history of being the world?s leading resource for the dissemination for technical information regarding the fields of mining and mineral extraction and processing. That reputation was met, and maybe even exceeded, with the programming for the Society?s 2014 Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, UT Feb. 23-26. The meeting drew more than 6,700 attendees to the three-day conference that featured more than 90 technical sessions with 670 presentations. These sessions covered the breadth of the mining and minerals industry, but it was the so-called ?softer issues? that were discussed in the keynote session that kicked off the meeting. The keynote session, ?Community Engagement: Building Partnerships for Mining,? brought together some of the leading voices from the mining industry, as well as some of the top voices from nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that work in the mining sector. The common ground between the panelists was their dedication to working to ensure a social, economic and environmental balance in the development of mines. ?We wanted to bring these NGOs in to begin a dialogue to see how we can work together,? said SME President Jessica Kogel. ?This is a space that SME has not typically operated in, but one in which SME can bring a technical, scientific voice to the discussion. SME wants to play a leadership role in creating partnerships between the technical, social and economic areas that are crucial to the success of any mining project.? In today?s environment, finding mineral deposits and extracting the minerals in an economically viable manner is just one piece of an increasingly complex puzzle. Earning and maintaining a social license to operate requires careful consideration of local and global impacts. The industry often comes under intense scrutiny when a new project is proposed and, therefore, it must strive to meet the highest ethical and environmental standards. Success requires cooperation and collaboration between the industry, community and NGOs.

Geomembranes have been used in the mining industry since the early 1970s in solution and evaporation ponds, tailings impoundments, and heap leach pads. Traditionally, heap leach pad lining systems have consisted of a single geomembrane liner placed directly over a prepared subgrade of locally available soil. Heap fills are constructed by placing a layer of highly-permeable drainage stone (overliner) over the geomembrane. Crushed ore is then placed on the leach pad in 3- to 10-m (15- to 30-foot) thick lifts, sometimes reaching final heights of several hundred feet. The crushed ore is irrigated with a chemical solution which dissolves the precious metals from the ore. The nature of the chemical leaching solution depends on the metal being targeted. Low pH sulfuric acid solutions are generally used to leach copper and nickel; high pH cyanide solutions are used to leach gold and silver. The metal-laden pregnant leach solution (PLS) passes down through the ore pile and is captured in a drainage system. Metals are extracted from the leach solution and the solution is then recycled back onto the leach pile. When under load, geomembranes are vulnerable to damage from large stones both in the soil subgrade and in the overlying drainage layer. Although intact geomembranes are virtually impermeable, installed geomembranes will have a small number of holes due to imperfect seams or damage during construction and filling operations. These holes serve as open pathways for leakage into the soil below. Smith and Welkner (1995) estimated liner leakage rates ranging from 5 to 10,000 L/ha/day, depending on the type of heap pad liner and level of construction quality assurance (CQA). Thiel and Smith (2003) reported liner leakage rates up to 2,000 L/ha/day for a valley fill facility with heads ranging from 15 to 35 m.

The trend in underground room-and-pillar coal mining is to employ remote-control continuous mining machines and extended cuts, 12 m (40 ft) deep or more. This system of coal extraction, adopted by over 435 mines, can create additional worker-safety hazards. To address the ground control and worker-positioning hazards, a combination of statistical analyses and numerical modeling was conducted. Initially, the reported roof-fall incidents and fatalities were reviewed to delineate the ground-control hazards. Then, the application of the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) for estimating safe extended-cut depths was evaluated. Finally, computer modeling to predict roof displacements during extended-cut mining was completed. The paper describes the results of these studies and their impact on the safety of extended-cut mining.

The metallurgical processes that are frequently applied today use strong solutions and are of alkaline, acidic, or organic nature. These play a very important part in recovery of values from many ores. These solutions are of such a chemical nature that they are generally corrosive, flammable, and contaminating. In most cases, they are highly dangerous to the environment. Within the extractive metallurgical industry, it is also very common to have to deal with the handling of contaminating solutions with a high content of cyanide, arsenic, mercury, lead, copper kerosene, acid and many other components whose temporary or permanent confinement within the process must be adequate and absolute.

Pyrite, a mineral associated with uranium ore, is closely related to uranium leaching. In this study, Ozone micro-nano bubbles (OMNBs), as an environmentally friendly advanced oxidation technology, were used for the first time to oxidize pyrite under experimental conditions to improve the leaching rate of uranium. A laboratory-scale agitation leaching experiment of pyrite was carried out with a pH of 1.0–3.0, gas flow of 1–3 L/min, ozone generation rate of 0.55–2.22 mg/s, and pyrite concentration of 0.1–5.0 g/L for 1 h. By adding three different co-oxidant: Mn(II), Mn(IV), and Fe(III), it was found that only Mn(IV) increased the oxidation rate of pyrite by 21.7%. The results of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) show that the formation of Fe(III)-O film on the surface of the ore suppresses the oxidation rate of pyrite to a certain extent. Pyrite can be rapidly oxidized up to 57.6% by OMNBs, which is beneficial to uranium leaching. This method is expected to be used for in situ acid leaching of uranium with OMNBs injected into the ground.

The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) recommends that the upper 1.22 m (4 ft) of spoil material on reclaimed surfaces should be left as uncompacted as possible to facilitate efficient tree root growth. However, the main concerns about applying the FRA to steep slopes is that the upper 1.22 m (4 ft) of loose spoil material could cause instability. Successful application of the FRA on the flat and rolling surfaces precipitated this investigation. Details of a field investigation conducted at a steep-slope mine site are available in an earlier publication (Kumar and Sweigard, 2011). A total of 70 survey monuments were driven into the slope in a regular pattern to monitor any type of slope movement. Quarterly surveying of the monuments were done to quantify slope movement, either horizontally or vertically. The methodology developed in this research for field slope movement monitoring was validated using computer model results. Analytical models based on the limit equilibrium method (LEM) and numerical models based on the finite element method (FEM) were developed for slope stability analysis. The LEM analysis was done using the Geo-Slope/W program following the simplified Bishop method. However, numerical models were developed using the PLAXIS computer program following the Mohr’s Coulomb failure criterion and strength reduction technique. The slope stability analysis was performed for two different scenarios: first with the top 1.22 m (4 ft) of loose graded spoil material and second without top loose graded spoil material. Finally, the field investigation results were compared with stability analysis results. Both of these approaches showed that application of the FRA on steep slopes is not causing any significant instability problems, due to 1.22 m (4 ft) loose graded spoil that would not exist otherwise for overly steepened slopes.

Fluorapatite is an important constituent of the greater part of the basic and ultra-basic rock members of the Complex. The evidence for and role of primary magmatic processes in the development of concentric zones of dunite, pyroxenite, syenite and carbonatite and its consequent bearing on the distribution of apatite are discussed. The presence of at least two generations of each of the latter three rock types indicates the cyclical nature of magmatic activity. Pegmatitic-metasomatic phases corresponding to the major magmatic cycles resulted in emplacement of pegmatoidal assemblages. The abundance of apatite in the pegmatoid can be traced to the composition of its parent magma and its cooling history. Approximately 2.5 million tonnes of phosphate concentrate are produced annually from ores containing from 10 percent to 25 percent apatite.

As we compete for close margins in wholesale sales, the effects of both quality and price have a major impact on the cost of producing electricity.SO2 emission allowances have traded as low as$60/ton to as high as $215/ton over the last three years. This price spread in emission allowances clearly demonstrates the correlation between the quality of fuels versus the price utilities will be willing to pay for them. This paper provides an overview of the effects of the qualities of fuel, coupled with transportation as well as environmental concerns on the price of fuel and the ability to compete in a deregulated electric market.

Fundamental theoretical models can now be used to make a significant next step towards the development and implementation of computerised models describing real industrial processes—Virtual Reactors, and computer-aided smart-decision-making systems that may be called Pyro-GPS by analogy to GPS; these developments can facilitate knowledge-based improvement and optimization strategies. "There is certainly no argument that LED lighting systems have taken a strong foothold in the lighting marketplace over the last several years. This has even proven true in the world of transportation and transit lighting, for which new LED cobra head style luminaires are replacing traditional HID cobra head luminaires on North America’s roadwaysand linear LED light fixtures are replacing conventional linear fluorescent light fixtures in North American rail transit facilities. However, LED technology has taken a while longer to penetrate the very specific market of vehicular tunnel lighting in this continent. Though both the New York/New Jersey Holland and Lincoln Tunnels have recently been retrofitted with LED lighting, and an LED Lighting RFP is currently out for Boston’s Central Artery Tunnels, very few vehicular tunnels in North America to date have been illuminated with LED light fixtures. This is largely because cost effective LED lighting, that met our typically stringent tunnel lighting standards, was until recently simply unattainable. However, with the rapid advances in LED technology over recent years, owners and specifiers of North American tunnel lighting projects have finally begun to adopt LED lighting systems as the norm. In fact, a recent Lux Fit/Yole Development “LED in Road and Street Lighting Report” stated that “LED luminaire growth will be driven firstly by tunnel lighting, and then relayed into highway, road, residential and amenity lighting applications starting in 2014.” 1 Our highways are continually becoming more congested. As a result, Provincial and State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) are constantly looking for innovative ways to improve traffic flow. One way DOTs are now helping to ease congestion is by expanding the use of tunnels and long underpasses in large interchange reconstruction projects. With less available right-of-way to work with, and the high costs of maintaining elevated bridge structures over the years, it often makes more sense to “go under” (rather than over) the traffic congestion points. With the addition of these new tunnels and long underpasses comes the issue of proper illumination within these structures, for a safe and efficient driving task. DOTs use recommended lighting practices and guidelines for highway lighting, which include specific criteria for tunnels, set by either the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) or the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). However, both IESNA and AASHTO point out that these recommended practices and guidelines are not a mandate, and DOTs are free to make their own decisions about lighting criteria. Accordingly, effectively illuminating tunnels is often times a challenge. This paper will examine the key considerations of the tunnel lighting application in generalas well as what LEDs now bring to the table and how, accordingly, traditional lighting technologies will be phased out in the future illumination of tunnels."

A study has been carried out to apply fly ash as a high strength, water-resistant precast construction material through geopolymerization. Experiment results show that the working conditions such as water content, the concentration of NaOH, curing temperature, and curing time significantly affect the mechanical property of geopolymermatrix. Through optimization, an above-100MPa compressive strength has been achieved with the geopolymerization products. The optimum working conditions involves 10MNaOH concentration, 14–15% water content, and curing at 90 °C in an oven for 1 day or at ambient condition for 3 weeks. Adding Ca(OH)2 does not help to increase the compressive strength of the specimen.Water soaking tests show that the geopolymerization product has a very high water resistance without losing noticeable compressive strength, even after a 1-month soaking time. To elucidate the geopolymerization mechanism, microscopic techniques such as SEM/EDS (scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction) and ATR-FTIR (attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared) are also applied to investigate the microstructure, the elemental and phase composition of geopolymerization products. The findings of the present work provide a novel method for applying fly ash as a high-strength water-resistant precast construction material.

Flotation tests were carried out on 6 coal samples of different rank as well as their oxidized samples. A mixture of diesel oil and alcohols was used in these tests. Surface oxidation caused a distinct decrease of the flotation recovery with some improvement in the grade The reduction in the recovery increased with increasing the concentration of the oxidizing agent. The floatability of low rank coals was affected by oxidation to a higher degree than medium and high rank coals. The recovery size curves of oxidized samples mere similar in shape to that of non-oxidized coals.

A bearing isolator is a noncontact, nonwearing, permanent bearing protection device. It has a rotor and a stator, and the two are unitized, so that they do not separate from one another while in use. The rotor turns with a rotating shaft, while the stator is pressed into a bearing housing. The two components interact to keep contamination out of the bearing enclosure and the lubricant in. Bearing isolators do not require lubrication or any particular shaft finish or condition. The best bearing isolators are made of metal, usually bronze. They use a vapor-blocking feature that inhibits the free transfer of vapor contamination when the rotating equipment is cycled on and off.

The story of America's progressing standard of living is the story of machines. The automobile, the airplane and the telephone for example have made our transportation and communication systems what they are today. Even they depend in turn on another machine -- the rock drill. By making it possible to economically mine and quarry minerals in large quantities, this versatile machine supports virtually every American industry relying on the earth for its buried raw materials. And, like all machines, the rock drill's mechanical evolution was stimulated by production demands placed upon it. All percussion drills are mechanized versions of the original drilling unit -- man, Figure - illustrates a double jack team at work before the turn of the century. The man with the sledge hammer is the impact device while the man sitting is the rotation mechanism and feed motor. The first drifter drills (Figure 2) performed the same function but with increased mechanical efficiency. A piston controlled by a valve produced impact. A built-in ratcheting mechanism provided rotation and a hand-cranked screw provided feed thrust. As the industrial revolution proceeded into the twentieth century, the demand for raw materials stimulated refinements of all recovery machinery, including rock drills. As drills became heavier and more powerful, a mounting (or carrier) had to be provided to move the drill from hole to hole. This resulted in the development of the wagon drill (Figure 3). Propelled by muscle power, the wagon drill was for years the standard tool of the surface drilling industry (Figure 4). Quaternary alluvial deposits in the modern stream channel of the Agua Fria River west of Phoenix, Arizona, is mined and processed to provide aggregate to the greater Phoenix area. The alluvium occurs as three distinct, stratigraphic layers. Samples from each of the three layers were examined for gravel clast lithology, grain size distribution, and engineering tests, which revealed noteworthy differences in properties. The engineering properties of the gravels are dependent on a combination of factors including gravel clast lithology, the distance the gravel clasts have been transported from their source areas, the age of the deposits, and the degree of weathering. Knowledge of these characteristics may affect the methods that aggregate operators employ to extract and process gravel from the Agua Fria River.

For the first half of the 21st Century the USA will rely on the same mix of fuels as for the past 50 years: Petroleum will cost more and availability will decline as developing nations modernize. Increased use of natural gas for electric power generation will result in severe stress on gas supply. Coal will be the fuel of last resort. More than half the petroleum used is imported, about the same amount as used for transportation. Only coal can provide relief by fueling railroads through electrification while encouraging ‘piggy-back’ trailer haulage, co-generation for manufacturing and expanded passenger service.

Green algae have been found to be much more resistant to heavy metals than blue-green algae. Several mechanisms for resistance to toxicity have been recognized in laboratory strains of Cyanidium, Chlorella and Chlamycomonas. Cyanidium and Chlorella both grow at low pH in acid mine water. Cyanidium removes metal ions from solution by precipitation as metal sulfides whereas Chlorella complexes metal ions to the cell surface i.e. cell wall) and therefore functions as an efficient ion exchange vehicle. We have shown that Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and Na+ are of critical importance in both the resistance and bioaccumulation of toxic heavy metals.

The Chino Mines Company, a Kennecott-Mitsubishi partnership, located in Hurley, New Mexico, recently completed a $405 million modernization of its mine, concentrator, and smelter facilities. The mine/ concentrator modernization commenced in 1980 and the smelter modernization began during 1982. Modernization of the mine and concentrator facilities involved increasing the mining rate from 98 kt/d (108,000 stpd) to 152.2 kt/d (167,800 stpd). Ore mining was designed to increase production from 20.2 kt/d (22,300 stpd) to 34.0 kt/d (37,500 stpd). A new concentrator was constructed near the mine using semi-autogenous grinding. The new smelter uses the INCO flash smelting process, increasing capacity by 40.8 kt/a (45,000 stpy) to 99.8 kt/a (110,000 stpy) of salable copper.
