The ventilation systems of coal storage silos are normally capable of rapidly dispersing any accumulations of methane in the atmosphere above the coal pile surface. However, the results of an investigation which is presented in this report show that hazardous concentrations of methane can accumulate within the coal pile. Methane trapped within the coal pile is released into the atmosphere of the loading gallery when coal is discharged from a silo. If the methane released is of a flammable concentration it is necessary to ventilate the gallery to reduce the risk of an ignition. This report proposes a simple test, which, after further investigations may prove to be an effective method to calculate gallery ventilation requirements.

The existence of water is one of the most effective factors in deterioration of natural building stones. In the process of deterioration, capillary water absorption is the most significant procedure of water penetration into the building stones. Pyroclastic rocks have been widely utilized as building stone especially in historical buildings and monuments since ancient times in the Central Anatolia in Turkey. Nowadays, this type of rocks is used in the restoration of historical buildings as well as in the construction of modern buildings. Pyroclastic rocks are highly susceptible to deterioration process. Capillary rise has a significant influence on water penetration into building stones. Therefore, it is quite important to identify the factors affecting the values of capillarity, capillary rising speed, and capillary rise that define capillary water absorption in these rocks. To this end, pyroclastic rock samples in different textures were compiled from the Cappadocia region, in Central Anatolia. First, petrographic, mineralogical, geochemical, physical, and pore diameter distribution properties of the samples were determined in the laboratory. Then, capillarity values with capillary rise and capillary rise speeds dependent on time were established. Based on the data obtained, correlation coefficients between matrix percentage and capillary water absorption rate and capillary rise values of pyroclastic rocks were calculated and found to be as 0.850 and 0.891, respectively. Thus, the article proposes a new empirical equation to practically calculate the capillary rise value depending on the matrix percentage (MP) and median pore diameter (MPD) values.

Immediate permanent roof support is an immediate thought of the mining engineer just as elimination of frequent time-consuming places changes is a thought of the methods engineer. The realization of those two objectives has the potential for improved safety with increased production is the thought of the general manager. Miner-Bolters Used a Generation Ago These are not new thoughts as the 1CM continous miner equipped with two integral roof drills was introduced twenty-five years ago. Approximately two hundred of these machines were sold in the next five years for use in medium and high seam operations. The 1CM miner chassis that remained stationary in the center of an entry or room while the ripper bar was swung and sumped hydraulically provided an ideal platform for mounting two roof drills that could be operated during the continuous miner's production cycle. Two roof bolts could normally be installed in less time than required for the mining cycle. A typical roof drill unit is shown in Figure I.

Views about the proper aim of public policy are, of course, matters of perspective and debate. Regardless of perspective, one would assume some consensus around the view that public policy ought to encourage mine operators to seek independent and critical assessments of worker safety and health at their operations through voluntary auditing. However, a review of the law on this topic shows that there is little to no manifestation of such a policy. Indeed, the balance of this paper, with a couple of exceptions, is devoted to the existing legal pitfalls that should be considered before a safety and health audit is conducted at a mine. While attorneys, particularly litigators like the author, might tend to focus on the potential problems that could arise from any given situation, the fact that most of this paper is devoted to potential legal concerns associated with auditing is a realistic reflection of the current state of the law. Specifically, this paper addresses the interplay between voluntary safety and health audits conducted at mines regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the administrative and civil legal issues related to such audits. The paper first provides an explanation of how and by whom an audit is conducted. The paper also addresses whether voluntary safety and health audits may be considered privileged and kept confidential in administrative and civil proceedings. Finally, selected legal issues related to such audits that could arise in administrative and civil litigation are discussed.1

"Electromagnetic based proximity detection systems (PDSs) are utilized on mining machinery to protect workers from being pinned or struck. These systems generate magnetic fields covering the space around a machine, and a miner-wearable component (MWC) detects the field. The PDS determines the distance of miners relative to the machine based on the detected magnetic flux density in the magnetic field. This information is used to establish warning and shutdown zones around the machine. Maintaining a stable magnetic field is essential for system accuracy. However, components used to generate magnetic fields can be influenced by temperature changes. Depending on ventilation conditions and seasonal alternation, a PDS can be subject to significant temperature fluctuation. To better understand and quantify this phenomenon, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed an experimental apparatus to study the influence of temperature on magnetic field generator circuits used in PDSs. Results from the study show that the electric current through a generator can be influenced by both ambient and internal temperatures, modifying the magnetic field that is produced. These findings show that temperature can significantly influence the ability of PDSs, used in underground coal mines, to accurately determine a worker’s position in relation to mining machine. INTRODUCTION Electromagnetic based proximity detection systems have been developed to reduce machine-related accidents in underground coal mines. The first proximity detection systems installed in underground coal mines were developed for continuous mining machines (CMMs). There are five of such proximity detection systems that are approved for use in U.S. mines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2013; Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2015). There are several basic components that interact within an electromagnetic proximity detection system (PDS). A PDS includes two main elements: a set of generators to create magnetic fields around a CMM and a set of magnetic probes to detect the fields. These systems can determine if a miner is located at a safe distance from the machine based on the detected magnetic flux density. Stability of the magnetic fields is essential for system accuracy."

In 1958, the coal industry, through Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and the electric utility industry, through the Edison Electric Institute and the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies, initiated a joint program to study coal pyrite and its removal as a means of lowering the sulfur content of steam coals. It was assumed that significant amounts of pyrite often remained in washed steam coal not because available systems for coal cleaning were inadequate, but because the pyrite was small and widely disseminated, During the first two years, samples of coal were examined petrographically to determine the size, association, and mode of occurrence of the pyrite in the raw coal and in the products of laboratory separation, Samples of coal were also pulverized in different equipment to determine how effectively pyrite was released by pulverization and if the mode of pulverization affected the liberation of pyrite. From these studies, the following tentative conclusions were made (1 ): 1. Much of the coal pyrite is within a 250-70 micron size range, and therefore is too small to be removed by conventional coal cleaning, but relatively large when compared to the size of coal as pulverized for combustion in large boilers. 2. The degree of pyrite liberation is mainly determined by the size of the product and not by the type of crusher. 3. For improved pyrite removal, the coal should be cleaned during or after pulverization at the power station.

In October, 1990, a fire started in a large underground coal mine in Western Pennsylvania. During fire-fighting activities, an explosion occurred and all personnel were evacuated. Safe re-entry into the mine was not possible and the mine was sealed. Recovery efforts began in January, 1991 and continued until March, 1991, when permanent underground seals were installed between the fire area and the mine openings. This paper describes an extensive atmospheric monitoring program conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center (PS&HTC) including the analysis of mine fire gases, natural ventilation, fan pressure and air quantity distribution.

The Zijinshan gold-copper mine, in spite of the low-grade nature of the ore, has become one of the largest production-scale and most profitable non-ferrous metal mines in China. The successful application of hydrometallurgy as well as proper engineering design are the key factors for large-scale development of the Zijinshan gold-copper mine. In this contribution, the practical experience acquired in the development of the Zijinshan gold and copper mines is summarized. This covers most aspects of the production process including mining, beneficiation, ore stacking, heap (bio)leaching, carbon-in-leach, solvent extraction, electrowinning, wastewater and tailing treatments. The authors believe that this practical experience will not only help to promote the development of hydrometallurgy, but can also serve as a model for other gold and/or copper plants around the world.

High-energy consumption in primary aluminum production (from bauxite ores) makes secondary aluminum production (from metallic raw materials such as scrap and dross) very critical. Aluminum dross, as a waste, arises in pyrometallurgical processes, and it is the mixture of metallic Al, Al2O3, other metal oxides, metal halides, and some other compounds like AlN. Aluminum dross has two subgroups (white and black) with respect to its metallic aluminum content. White dross is a secondary aluminum resource because of its high metallic aluminum content, whereas black dross, having low metallic aluminum content, is generally disposed in dumping areas. In the present study, it was aimed to develop a simple technique to valorize aluminum black dross in the form of alumina-based ceramic materials through pyrometallurgical (calcination) and hydrometallurgical (leaching) operations. Moreover, thermochemical simulations were conducted by using HSC Chemistry 6.12 software to simulate calcination conditions. After leaching experiments, an alumina-based ceramic containing approximately 36.8% Al2O3, 61.4% MgAl2O4 with 1.8% Na2FeO4, which might be available to use as a spinel refractory in steel smelting furnaces, was obtained in the experiment carried out in a solution containing 10 mLH2SO4 and 40 mL distilled water (3.5 M). Moreover, the sinterability of the alumina-based ceramic was investigated at the temperatures from 1350 to 1550 °C. In the sample which was sintered at 1550 °C, a density value of 3.15 g cm−3 and a hardness value of 69.58 HV were measured.

"Talc formed by hydrothermal alteration of preexisting carbonate rocks is known to be nearly monomineralic, and lacking in amphiboles. In southwest Montana, talc formed from hydrothermally altered dolomitic marbles, and is still actively mined. These talc deposits are typically in contact with quartzofeldspathic gneiss and marble. Accessory minerals vary between these rocks and the ore producing body; the identification and characterization of such minerals requires carefully selected analytical methods. Recent litigation and ensuing confusion over the petrology and asbestos content of these deposits challenges the talc mining industry in Montana, and elsewhere in the world. INTRODUCTION Commercial talc has been mined from the deposits in southwest Montana since the 1940s, and by 1956 the region had output 200,000 tons of talc ore (Chidester et al., 1964). Commercial talc refers to rocks containing more than 20% of the mineral talc (McCarthy et al., 2006); the ores from Montana typically contain upwards of 90% talc. This region remains the leading domestic source of talc in the U.S. partly due to the reserves in the area, and partly due to the diagnostic purity of the ore compared to that of other regions, some of which are no longer actively mined. The mineral talc, a sheet silicate, is expressed by the formula Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, and therefore can form in geologic environments that are rich in Mg, Si, O and water. The protolith for the talc deposits in southwest Montana is a dolomitic marble, but other common protoliths include ultramafic igneous, mafic igneous, and siliceous dolomites (McCarthy et al., 2006). Physical properties such as hardness of 1 on Mohs hardness scale, white streak and slippery feel are among some of the reasons why talc is so widely used as fillers in a number of industries. In decreasing order, ceramics, paper, paint, roofing, plastics, rubber, and cosmetics are the leading domestic industries that use talc despite the decreasing trend in U.S. talc use and production since 1994 (Virta, 2015). The purpose of this paper is to describe the mechanism of talc formation in southwest Montana by focusing on talc deposits and surrounding rocks in the Ruby, Greenhorn, and the Gravelly Ranges, and to relate the mechanism of formation to the composition of talc ores. The compositional data show mineral content of selected ores, and the major and trace element content of those minerals, specifically talc. Our electron microprobe (EPMA), powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray fluorescence data for samples from five mines in these three ranges provide continued evidence of the purity of these ores despite claims made during recent litigation that these ores contain asbestos. The five mines that we discuss include the Beaverhead, Treasure, Regal, Willow Creek, and Yellowstone Mines (Figure 1.)"

Introduction The economics of open-pit mining de¬pend heavily on the cost of overburden removal. It is necessary to maintain a pit slope as steep as possible. Steeper slopes lower the volume of overburden to be handled, thus lower the cost of material handling. There is, however, a limit to which the pit slopes in any given situation can be steepened. Steepening beyond this point could jeopardize the pitwall stability, ren¬dering it unsafe. It might even result in curtailment of pit production. Several factors affect the stability of pitwalls. Some are natural, such as topogra¬phy and regional and local geology. Others are man made, such as pit geometry, ground water management, equipment, drilling and blasting, and the type of excavation. Greater control can be exercised in the latter with proper planning and by following a set of procedures based on field experiences. This article deals with one such control¬lable factor - drilling and blasting. The eco¬nomics of steeper pit slopes is discussed, followed by a record of drilling and blasting practices in western Canadian surface mines. Microprocessor-based instrumentation and its application to blasthole drilling is also described. Economics of steeper pit slopes The economics of steeper pit slopes is not a new issue. It should be reinforced, though, that pit slopes must be as steep as possible to ensure maximum recovery of minerals at a minimum stripping ratio. For operating, economic, and safety reasons, different pit slopes are maintained during different phases of pit development. Figure 1 shows a hypothetical ore body, cylindrical shape, with a radius of 225 m (740 ft) and located 30 m (100 ft) beneath the surface. The mining operations are planned at two different slope angles of 25° and 40°. The ultimate pit depth was established on the basis of the criterion of "break even pit." The variation of the stripping ratio at differ¬ent mine levels is shown in Fig. 2. Table I summarizes the eco¬nomics involved for two pit slopes, 25° and 40°. Figure 3 presents the profits during the life of the mine for these two pit slopes. This study shows that steeper slopes for an open pit operation are far more advanta¬geous than flatter slopes. But, what is the optimum slope at any one point in the life of a moving pit? And how can the stable slopes be maintained over the short- and long-term? Canadian blasting practices A survey of blasting practices in western Canadian surface coal mines revealed that, at most mines, hard consolidated overburden is drilled and blasted. Blastholes are drilled with rotary crawler-¬mounted rigs using bits in the 220 to 310 mm-diam (8.5 to 12 in.-diam) range. Typi¬cal hole depths are 12 to 18 m (40 to 60 ft) to accommodate the pit bench heights of 12 to 15 m (40 to 50 ft). For a 12-m (40-ft) high bench, a typical hole will be 14.6 m (48 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). Half of this hole will typically be a powder column and half will be stemmed. For a 15-m (50-ft) bench, a typical hole will be up to 18 m (66 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling. Drilling patterns are usually 9 m (29.5 ft) spacing and 9 m (29.5 ft) burden. A composite material consists of two or more dissimilar components. These dissimilar components retain their identities when mixed together and contribute to the properties of the composite. A composite usually consists of two parts, the matrix and the reinforcing material, or extender that is added to the matrix. Typical materials used as the matrix in composites are metals, polymers, and ceramics. The reinforcing material can be added for any number of reasons. For instance, if the matrix is expensive, an inexpensive filler may be added to the matrix to lower the cost of the product without sacrificing properties. An example of this is calcite (CaC03) which is added to systems such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), to lower the cost. Reinforcements may also serve as a means to enhance the properties of the matrix material. For example, carbon fibers are frequently added to plastics to increase their strength, and glass spheres may be added to plastics to improve flexural strength. Mg(OH)z is added to polymers to give the property of fire retardancy. The latter is the focus of this paper.

It hardly needs to be repeated that if coal is to continue as America’s premier source of cheap energy, it is absolutely necessary that the carbon dioxide from its combustion somehow be sequestered. A promising method proposed to accomplish this is the “indirect” carbonation of serpentine in a concentrated magnesium chloride brine. Indirect carbonation could be also applied to precipitate magnesium in lateritic nickel processing: this would not only solve magnesium-control problems in laterite hydrometallurgy, but also reduce its energy requirements and create CO2-sequestration credits. Fifty-five percent of the electricity generated in the United States comes from coal-fired power plants, and American coal reserves can last over 500 years at 1990-level consumption1. Coal is therefore both abundant and cheap: it could (and in fact probably will) continue to be an affordable source of energy, both for producing electricity and as a feedstock for liquid hydrocarbon production by Fischer-Tropsch reactions. As a result, it is important to find a workable method of permanently sequestering CO2.

Siskon Gold has started gold production at the San Juan deposit in northern California. The mine is located about 27 km (17 miles) north of Nevada City, CA (Fig. 1). It is scheduled to be-come the largest underground gold mine in California. It is situated in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the Mother Lode gold belt. The property consists of 8 km2 (2,000 acres) of patented land. It is situated in a topographically high area known as San Juan Ridge, which is 213 m (700 ft) above and between the Middle Yuba and South Yuba rivers. The elevation is between 790 and 914 m (2,600 and 3,000ft) above sea level. Annual precipitation averages 1,346mm (53 in.). Most of that falls between November and April.

Large tonnages of copper and molybdenum sulfide ore are treated by flotation. Substantial savings could be realized, particularly in high-capacity concentrators, by use of a simplified flotation technique involving lower reagent consumption. Chalcopyrite and molybdenite from some deposits can be floated by use of only a frother as a single flotation reagent; acceptable concentrate grade and recovery can be obtained. Separation of molybdenite from copper sulfides may become simpler and less costly. The genesis of the ore and the ions present in the flotation pulp liquid phase appear to be the major success-determining factors.

To better understand the load shedding and the stress transfer on coal pillars due to room-and- pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a monitoring field study. Two sites, at overburden depths of 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m), were selected in a room-and-pillar mine operating in Southern West Virginia. The deformation and stress changes in the roof and two adjacent pillars at each site were monitored during the retreat mining process. The monitoring results and field observations were used to calibrate large-scale FLAC3D models for each site. The calibrated models were used to assess different sizes of roof bolts installed in deep cover areas. INTRODUCTION Deep cover room-and-pillar retreat mining is an important emerging issue that will intensify in the future as shallower reserves are depleted (Mark, 2009; Chase et al., 2002). During pillar retreat mining, the likelihood of local and/or global instabilities increases due to elevated stress levels near the pillar line because of the abutment loading. In the last decade, approximately 31% of the room-and-pillar mining groundfall fatalities in the United States occurred during pillar retreat mining. Between 2013 and 2017, this proportion increased to 55%, of which 50% of these fatalities were due to falls of roof and rib that occurred during pillar recovery (MSHA, 2018). One interesting piece of information about pillar recovery fatalities was that the victim was nearly always under bolted roof. Sheared and broken #5 (5/8-in), fully grouted rebar bolt failure contributed to three of four fatal roof fall incidents that have occurred in deep cover retreat mines (NIOSH, 2010). This claim raised the following question at the study mine: Is it safe to use a 4-ft long #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt grade 60 at a depth of cover more than 1,000 ft (304.8 m)? There was some concern about shear failure of the #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt at a depth of cover over 1,000 ft (304.8 m). To answer the question and to reduce accidents and fatalities caused by ground falls due to room-and-pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) monitored the roof and rib deformation and the change in vertical pressure within two adjacent pillars during pillar recovery. The study was conducted at two deep cover sites in a room-and-pillar mine located in Southern West Virginia that operates in the Lower War Eagle (LWE) seam. The monitored sites were selected at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m) depths of cover. In this paper, site-1 represents the monitored site at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of cover, while site-2 represents the monitored site at 1,500 ft (457.3 m) of cover. For this study, large-scale FLAC3D numerical models were calibrated based on both field observations and instrumentation results. The calibrated models were then used to compare the ground response and the induced stresses of two pillars at instrumented sites 1 and 2. The maximum lateral displacement (roof shift) obtained from the calibrated large-scale FLAC3D models was applied to a small-scale FLAC3D bolted models, the safety factor for axial stresses of the simulated roof bolts was calculated at the deep cover sites.

In 1996, lack of confidence in assaying methods and sample handling affected companies as diverse as Bre-X and Timbuktu. Both share prices and the ability to raise financing are impacted when the quality of assay data is suspect. Overseas projects are subject to enhanced scrutiny when local facilities are used that are unfamiliar to brokers, financing agencies and banks. Quality control systems can be -implemented but there are associated costs. These costs should reflect the risk to the mining company, investors and financiers and the size of the proposed investment. In this regard, assay control call is considered a form of insurance to enhance the value of an exploration or mining project.

Tables showing world trade in metallic mineral raw materials during the years 1953 through 1957 have been prepared for the following twenty-one commodities: alumina, aluminum, bauxite, chromite, copper concentrates, partly refined and fully refined copper metal, iron ore, pig iron, iron and steel (simple shapes), lead concentrates, lead metal, manganese ore, mercury metal, nickel ore, concentrates, and matte, nickel metal, raw pyrites, sintered pyrites, tin concentrates, tin metal, zinc concentrates, and zinc metal. In each instance, the amounts given by the importing country were used except when statistics from the importing nation were lacking, incomplete, or misleading. To show the considerable divergence between importing and exporting country totals for the same years, the complete mercury table is given and, in parallel columns, shows the comparable tonnages of importers and exporters. Tables for the other twenty commodities are presented in summary form. The data of the concentrate tables are used with those of the corresponding metals as a basis for a discussion of trade in concentrates versus trade in metals. The data of all twenty-one tables provide the basis for testing the thirteen rules governing international trade in metal raw materials which I first published in Mining Engineering for July 1955. Because the 1953 through 1957 data are far more complete and considerably more extensive than those on which the 1955 rules were based, it was found possible to deduce five additional rules and to modify three of the original thirteen appreciably. Burst-prone conditions are a significant hazard in deep hardrock mines, elevating the risk to excavation stability and, more importantly, to worker safety. As mining progresses deeper, induced stress changes may trigger the initiation of rock failure processes which can be detected and recorded as mine seismicity. The implementation of seismic monitoring and routine seismic data analyses enables mine seismicity to be quantified spatially, temporally and on scale. The ability to quantify and characterize mine seismicity offers the opportunity to gauge seismic hazard, identifying high risk zones for mitigation against burst-prone excavation failure. Over the last decade, the Mines Technical Services (MTS) group at Vale Canada Limited’s Garson Mine assessed seismic hazard with the objective of assigning practical mitigating controls to zones identified as having a high rockburst potential. Initially, seismic hazard was computed using the Seismic Excavation Hazard Mapping (SEHM) software developed by the Mining Innovation Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO) at Laurentian University, Canada. More recently, Vale Sudbury Operations partnered with the Australian Centre for Geomechanics and the University of Western Australia’s mXrap consortium. Through the consortium partnership, MTS at Garson Mine implemented the mXrap seismic data analyses platform, including the grid-based seismic hazard assessment tool. Building on 10 years of seismic hazard assessment experience at Vale Garson Mine, this paper summarizes a comprehensive case study, comparing the two tools (SHEM and mXrap) used at Garson Mine to assess, quantify, and represent seismic hazard. Subsequently, results of the Garson Mine comparative seismic hazard study will be discussed, emphasizing the need for an all-inclusive hazard assessment tool, focused on delivering practical mitigating controls that further enhance the overall safety of seismically active underground mines.
