As opposed to a prescriptive-based design, a performance-based fire-protection system design allows the system planner the flexibility in choosing specific method, materials and design tools to achieve a preset goal. A different approach in fire protection and a powerful addition to existing method, the system has been around for many years, and has gone through numerous improvements. Despite its popularity in the building industry, it has not been introduced to the mining industry yet. As mines get deeper, increases in size and complication, mine fire safety system will also become increasingly challenging, a new and proven system should be able to great potential to eradicate many of the problems that are either unsolvable or cost-prohibitive with the traditional method. With increasing globalization and international exchange with other major mining countries a common language/practice also make the performance-based design method a desirable feature in mine fire safety system. This paper will first define a performance-based system, step-by-step design methods, likely impacts on fire-protection practices and possible challenges in implementing the system in US underground mines.

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. Broken rock mass and unreasonable stope structure parameters can cause excessive ore loss and dilution in sublevel caving; this is the main problem faced by caving mining in recent years. This paper proposes a stope structure parameter optimization method suitable for steeply inclined medium-thick broken ore bodies and evaluates the reliability and effectiveness through case studies. To solve the problem of large ore loss and dilution in the high-end wall sublevel caving method of Xilinhot fluorite mine, it is necessary to select proper stope structure parameters. Based on the theory of random media, an end-wall ore drawing experiment was carried out, and the bulk flow parameters needed to optimization of stope structure parameters were determined. In the experiment, it was found the draw-out body of high-end wall ore drawing showed a fine top and a thick bottom; the granular media had good fluidity. The reasonable caving step is determined to be 1.2 m instead of the 1.6 m originally used. Through the optimization experiment of the mining route position along the vein, the study found that the best route position is different with the ore body inclination. When the inclination angle of the ore body was 90°, the reasonable route was located in the center of the ore body. When the inclination angle of the ore body was between 85° and 90°, the route moved from the center of the ore body to the footwall at a rate of 22.5%. When the inclination angle of the ore body was between 80° and 85°, the route moved to the footwall at a rate of 54.8%. When the inclination angle of the ore body is not greater than 80°, the route should be arranged on the boundary of the footwall. Field application results showed the dilution rate reduced by 7.66% and the recovery rate increased by 7.31%. Field test results verify the effectiveness and applicability of the optimized stope structure, which corroborates the effectiveness and applicability of the optimized stope structure.

Through the ?nuclear age?, it has become better understood and the regulations have become more robust. Ventilation and control practices have improved, thus reducing miners? exposures. This paper provides an overview of radon in mining, the progress of the regulations, and discusses some of the uranium miner studies that contributed to the knowledge of the pathology of radon.

The Marlin gold-silver deposit is in western Guatemala, 15 kilometers south of a major transform fault that separates the North American and Caribbean plates. A district-scale, northwest-trending graben controlled deposition of a greater than 1200 meter thick upper Tertiary quartz latite to rhyolite volcaniclastic sequence. These volcanics were subsequently intruded and unconformably overlain by a small intermediate, latite to andesite, volcanic complex. Classic low-sulfidation, quartz-calcite-adularia veins and stockwork formed a 2.2 million ounce gold deposit, in association with late-stage andesite dike swarms, along a west-northwest striking normal fault on the eastern flank of the volcanic complex.

The beginning of 21st century has heralded the global strategic importance, as evidenced by increase in energy prices and energy generation-emission-utilization dilemmas. In January 2008, the South African energy supplier, ESKOM had tabled the concept of power conservation and acknowledged the energy crisis until 2016. The concept is required of all energy users to reduce their electricity consumption, intensify energy efficiency and cautiously proceed with new projects. The generation of energy results in by-products called ?green house gases? (GHGs). To make a positive response to climate change and their effect on the environment, every energy user must ensure efficient energy use through technical and administrative means referred to generally as energy savings. This paper identifies mine ventilation engineering, in particular the electricity consumed by main fan units, as an area of potential energy savings. For a major mining company, electricity consumed by main ventilation fans alone can be in the order of 120 MW. Although a known fan engineering technique but scantly applied technology identified as the Hermit Crab can be seen as a ?quick win? project, due to its success in other industries such as cement and steel. The ?Hermit Crab? technique® involves upgrading or replacement of an impeller - whatever its origin - with a design impeller to suit the actual ventilation requirements, resulting in increased fan efficiencies. The cash flow benefits associated with a case study and its rollout of this technology have been calculated. For a 10% increase in main fan efficiency, would have a net present benefit of US$ 16.08m over 10 years. With the inclusion of carbon credits, this benefit rises to US$ 29.40m in total. Application of other available technologies, viz., composite materials, ventilation-on-demand and variable speed drives are discussed.

While Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) occurs naturally, its management poses challenges especially at the decommissioned sites. Two passive systems were designed and implemented at two different decommissioned mining sites in Canada in order to treat the seepage with ARD characteristics. One seep originating from a reclaimed tailings pond was neutral mine drainage (NMD) containing circumneutral pH and dissolved metals (e.g., nickel, zinc) in elevated concentrations. The other ARD from a tailings stack showed net acid drainage characteristics with low pH and higher metal concentrations than regulated limits. Due to the different ARD characteristics occurring at each site, different types of treatment systems were designed and implemented. Both sites experience extreme winter conditions. The NMD has been treated mainly by limestone drain and aerobic systems since 1997. The acid ARD has been treated by a system consisting of an anaerobic sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) cell, an aerobic cell and a limestone filter since 2004. As this site has no access roads, space, or power, a significant capital cost as well as sludge disposal/storage requirements would have been required to institute a chemical (active) treatment system. Both systems have been successfully treating seepage and producing a water quality year round that could comply with regulated objectives.

A study was undertaken to evaluate the thermal environment and determine the contributing heat sources within the existing 153 Orebody of Coleman/McCreedy East Mine which would then enable the prediction of the climatic conditions in the mine?s future 170 Orebody. The study entailed continuously monitoring, for a 2-week period, the dry-bulb temperature, humidity and barometric pressure along the existing intake airways from surface down to the 4810 Level and throughout an active mining area on that level. Furthermore, the mining activities and associated equipment that could be responsible for any changes in the temperature and humidity conditions within this mining area were also monitored. These data were then used to develop and validate a climatic simulation of the mine?s mechanized cut and fill mining method. This climatic model was then transposed to the future 5700 Level in the deeper 170 Orebody, to determine the environmental conditions within its production workings and along the main haulage route ascending from that area. Based upon the simulations performed it was shown that the level of ventilation planned for the new orebody should be able to maintain adequate environmental conditions. However, this study did emphasize the importance of the appropriate distribution of airflow in workplaces that used auxiliary ventilation in order to sustain a suitable thermal environment.

Newmont Mining Corporation and Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. concluded an exchange of land and reserves in an agreement signed May 3, 1999.This exchange of assets allowed Newmont to develop the Deep Post underground mine from within Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit, thus reducing capital expenditures, lowering operating costs, and advancing the production schedule by nearly three years. Based on previous experience, Newmont is confident that the Deep Post underground mine can be successfully developed and operated within a large, active, open pit mine. The project also faces difficult geotechnical conditions including weak ground, scattered pockets of groundwater, and elevated rock temperatures.

After forty years of exploration and development, the heavy mineral sand deposits of the Murray Basin are on the eve of substantial exploitation by Iluka Resources Limited, Southern Titanium NL and RZM/Cable/Bemax, whom plan to initiate mining and processing operations in 2005. A trial mining and processing operation was undertaken on the Wemen North strandline deposit in 2001-2003 by Murray Basin Titanium, a joint venture of Sons of Gwalia and RZM/Cable, which brought to light a number of mining and processing problems which have since been the subject of extensive studies and process development work. The mineralogy of these weathered strandline deposits is complex by industry standards due to the variety of the heavy minerals present, coatings on the mineral grains and the extensive weathering and alteration which has taken place during the past 50 million years. This paper provides an overview of the complex mineralogy that, in turn, dictates the processes that can be used to recover the valuable heavy minerals. The Murray Basin encompasses some 300,000 km2 and has been a depositional basin, often land locked, since the start of the Cenezoic Era. The economic heavy minerals include ilmenite, altered ilmenite, leucoxene of highly variable composition, rutile, and zircon. There are also other heavy minerals present such as cassiterite, chromite, and monazite in quantities that pose both problems and opportunities. The clay content and overburden thickness also play a major role in the selection of the deposits to be mined. Project Services Consultants (PSC) has undertaken the preparation of this paper as part of its ongoing participation in the mineral sands industry and in particular the project development activities in the Murray Basin region currently being undertaken by Iluka Resources. Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 meters (8 feet) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting and saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can effectively prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile, implying that great care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a full depth of at least 2.4 meters (8 feet) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

A new P(MAAA) latex was developed and used in separation of ultrafine apatite from calcite and silica by means of selective flocculation. The latex was found to flocculate selectively apatite from apatite/calcite and apatite/silica mixtures in the presence of sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium silicate over a pH range from 9.1 to 9.4. The separation of apatite from calcite was more selective with sodium tripolyphosphate, while the results of the separation of apatite from silica were better when sodium silicate was used. In the apatite/calcite system, 90% apatite recoveries into a concentrate containing 34% P2O5 were possible in the presence of 4 mg/l of sodium tripolyphosphate at a latex dosage of 2.2 kg/t. In the apatite/silica system, 80% of apatite could be recovered into a concentrate containing 33% P2O5 in the presence of 20 mg/l of sodium silicate at a latex dosage of 1.1 kg/t. Deposition tests were used to study the interaction between the latex and the mineral surfaces. The results revealed that deposition density of the latex on apatite was higher than on calcite; the differences between the deposition onto these two minerals were higher at pH 9.2 than at 7.2. The results point to the stronger interaction between the latex and apatite surface when compared with the latex-calcite interactions.

Introduction Will cogeneration be a major power source in the future? The location of electric power generating plants has changed. In 1900, more than 50% of electricity was generated by industrial plants. Since then, industrial plant generation of electricity greatly decreased to 17% in 1950 and to only 3% in 1980. Changing economics in electric power generating costs, though, may allow cogeneration to reverse this trend. Cogeneration has been defined as the simultaneous production of electric (mechanical) and thermal energy from a single energy source. Some applications are considered to be byproduct generation of electricity from industrial, thermal operations. Cogeneration is not new to the mining and minerals industry. Smelters and steel mills have used waste heat to generate electricity. Public Utilities Regulatory Policies Act of 1978 The potential for increased industrial cogeneration of electricity is related to the March 9, 1978 enactment of the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA). The US Supreme Court ruled that PURPA is constitutional. The court upheld requirements that utilities interconnect to cogenerators. It also ruled that 100% of avoided costs be used as the guideline for electricity sales by a qualifying facility (QF) to a utility. The state of New York established a floor price $0.06/kWh for electricity sales from a QF to a utility. It is obvious, then, that a cogenerator must first establish price and then become a qualifying facility in order to sell electricity to a utility. Proposed cogeneration plants The estimated industrial cogeneration potential for the years 1986 to 2000 is 9500 to 25,000 MW. Industries represented in this cogeneration estimate are pulp and paper, petroleum, chemicals, food, textiles, rubber, plastics, steel, lumber and wood, cement, glass, metal fabrication, and industrial parks. A cogeneration plant has been proposed for the Union Carbide chemical plant in Institute, WV. A steam turbine/generator would be installed to replace the pressure-reducing valve in the 2.7 MPa (400 psig) header. Scott Paper Co., Mobile, AL, proposed a cogeneration plant using a coal- and wood-fired boiler and a turbine/generator to produce process steam and electric power. A cogeneration system has been proposed for a large oil refining plant. A pulverized coal boiler would produce high-pressure steam to operate a turbine, generator. The exhaust steam from the turbine will go to the process and an existing turbine. Kansas City, MO's Armour meat-processing plant has proposed a cogeneration plant. This proposal is to use a natural gas or oil-fired, gas-driven turbine and a generator. The waste heat from the gas turbine would go to a heat recovery boiler for use as process heat. Dade County, FL is implementing a central energy system to supply electricity, air conditioning, and domestic hot water for five buildings in downtown Miami. The cogeneration system is to provide flexibility, to optimize fuel use efficiency while serving the variable thermal demands. Generation of electricity from municipal waste is not considered to be a cogeneration process but is covered by PURPA. Special considerations are provided for waste/electric power generation to encourage the development of these systems. ?

Since the beginning of Aluminum mining and refining the industry has lived with distributed control rooms and suffered from many behavioral problems common with this design. When Human Factor/Ergonomic design is introduced to a Western Australian installation a common centralized control room realized many improvements including economic payback. Communications issues were resolved, better coordination of materials, improved situation awareness during startups, abnormal operations and an opportunity to make improvements during normal operations characterize the changes at the Worsley Refinery. This presentation will review the reasons for the change. Since the beginning of Aluminum mining and refining the industry has lived with distributed control rooms and suffered from many behavioral problems common with this design. When Human Factor/Ergonomic design is introduced to a Western Australian installation a common centralized control room realized many improvements including economic payback. This presentation will review the reasons for the change, what changed and the process of changing the culture from reactive to predictive and what difference that has made.

A large body of readily available Na-montmorillonite is present about 24km (15 miles) east of Fallon, Nevada. The clay is comparable to Wyoming Na-bentonite, but with somewhat less MgO and somewhat more Fe2O3 in its crystal structure. The physical and industrial properties of the Nevada clay are comparable to those of the Wyoming clay. The Na-montmorillonite is presently mined for use as hazardous waste barrier material and as a sealant for canals. It may be economically feasible to process the clay material for removal of impurities.

Introduction The South African Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., in Sishen, operates a large iron ore mine in the Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The mine is about 600 km (370 miles) west of Johannesburg. Its annual capacity is 100 Mt (110 million st) of ore and waste. Present production is 60 Mt/a (66 million stpy). The mine operates continuously six days a week. Primary equipment includes 55 154 t (170 st) Wabco and Unit Rig trucks and 14 P&H shovels. During 1979, a feasibility study into the application of a trolley assist system was launched. This was due to the escalation in diesel fuel costs and the appeal by the South African government to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Tests and economic evaluations proved the system technically feasible. The estimated discounted cash flow return exceeded 50%. Diesel fuel consumption would be reduced by 120 ML (31.7 million gal) in the next 10 years. The construction of 7.7 km (4.8 miles) of line and the conversion of 66 154 t (170 st) trucks were completed in March 1982. System description The conventional 154 t (170 st) diesel electric rear-dump haul-truck is equipped with two direct current wheelmotors in the rear axle. They drive the rear wheels through planetary gearboxes. A 1.2-MV (1600-hp) diesel engine and an alternator is used to power the wheelmotors. The trolley assist system consists of an overhead power line, a current collector mounted on the truck, and add-on control equipment where external electric power is routed by way of the current collector to the motorized wheels. The diesel engine is used to propel the truck on level sections. On inclines, the wheel-motors of the truck are coupled by way of a current collector to the externally generated electrical power supply for propulsion. The diesel engine, having lower output than the wheelmotors, limits the truck performance. Previously, maximum output was required from an engine on inclines. By supplying the wheelmotors from a virtually unlimited outside electric energy source, the truck performance is enhanced to the extent that speed is increased by 46% and fuel consumption reduced by 75%. System design The unique operational requirements of this mine rendered the already proven trolley pole system useless. Minimum loss in truck mobility and flexibility was required. Overhead lines and substations were required to be relatively light and portable. This enables fast repositioning of a line with no loss in material. These unique specifications set the base for the design of the Sishen system. Steel I-beams, 203 x 203 mm x 52 kg/m (8 x 8 in. x 35 lb per ft) with lengths varying from 8.3 to 11.3 m (27 to 37 ft), mounted on base plates about 4 x 2.6 m (13 x 8.6 ft) were used as masts. The masts were erected at about 50 m (165 ft) and the base plates covered with about 12 t (13 st) of iron ore to keep them absolutely stable. Results from the pilot installations indicated that using single cantilever cross arms for insulator and overhead conductor suspension was not practical. The tension in the overhead varied too much with temperature changes, causing too much sag in the lines. There had to be a positive and negative conductor. It was decided to suspend each polarity on an independent cantilever and keep the conductors under constant tension by weights acting through a two-to-one pulley tensioning arrangement. For each overhead conductor, a standard 160-mm (6.5-sq in.) grooved copper railway conductor was used. To obtain the necessary current carrying capacity, two of these conductors are used in parallel per pole. Insulators are rated at 4 kV and are of the composite type. An 11-kV three-phase line, supported by the pantograph line masts on the opposite side of the dc line, feeds the rectifier stations. The rectifier stations consist of an 11-kV to 860-V, three-phase 1.46 MVA transformer and a three-phase diode bridge rectifier. Mining, waste is growing problem both physical accumulation and increasing toxic uncertainties it presents in the long run. Its value ?zero? is strictly calculated by economy. This mining model begs the question: What is the value of waste & what does it represent to the mining industry? Waste is widely accepted as a ?by product? generated as a consequences of the mining process. The abundant waste accumulation affects society, as receptor, in many ways and the waste piles of materials has no use and no destiny. In reality, this waste is monument of imperfection of the extractive industries worldwide. Our planet is finite and has strict limitations, which mining has traditionally ignored. It is time to design a new system, in which clearly, waste design must be integrated in whole mining process; it has no room to postpone. This paper presents a concept in waste design by which toxic mining waste not only can be rendered inert but also act as nutrient to help balance the ecosystems. This concept calls for extractive industries to pursue EQUILIBRIUM with nature (Geomimic). Also, this concept offers countless gains and opportunities fro the industry and by converting liabilities into assets; mining engineers become the managers and stewards of nature. Also, waste design offers new solutions for proper and sustainable waste management of the mining industry.

Puerto Rico lies within the remnants of a deformed Cretaceous island arc system in the northeastern Caribbean. The Island can be divided into three broad geologic provinces: the Central Volcanic-Plutonic Province (Lower Cretaceous to middle Eocene), and the Northern and Southern Limestone Provinces (early Oligocene to middle Miocene). Known precious metal deposits are generally small and occur in veins and shear zones within Lower and Upper Cretaceous volcanic and plutonic rocks. Some Tertiary igneous rocks are also mineralized. Selected indications of disseminated lithology-controlled mineralization could represent larger deposits. Associated metals in some deposits include copper, zinc, and lead. At present, tax policies, population density, political outlook, and lack of proven significant precious metal deposits discourage the establishment of a metal mining industry.
