The mined geologic burial of high-level nuclear waste is how the favored option for disposal. The underground repositories must keep the waste away from the biosphere for very long times - several thousands to tens of thousands of years. Also, access must be maintained to the vaults for several tens of years, so that the waste can be retrieved, if necessary. Both the excavation of the underground chambers, and the radiogenic heating will disturb the rock mass. The overall rock mechanics problem is to understand and predict the processes associated with these perturbations, and their impact oh the isolation and containment of the waste (3)**. The specific rock. mechanics issues which have been identified for the three candidate hard rocks (basalt, granite, and tuff), are summarized in Table 1. The table also indicates the level of adequacy of our knowledge in the areas of the various issues. Such an evaluation is consistent with the general consensus of the rock mechanics profession, as explained in several key reports and publications (1 to 11). The main shortcomings of today's rock mechanics for waste repositories can be summarized as: ? lack of resolution for remote mapping of fractures in rock masses ? great difficulty in testing large volumes of rocks to determine their mechanical properties.

"With mining, especially coal extraction, comes the necessity of supporting the roof. Since the 1950s, the primary method for roof support has been the use of roof bolts. Roof bolting is considered one of the most hazardous jobs in underground coal mining. In 2004, there were 3,405 injuries reported to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Of those injuries, 17 percent were associated with bolting machines (593 injuries). The majority of the injuries resulted from rock falling from supported roof. However, injuries involving a part of the body being struck by, or caught between, during bolting and drilling occurred with relatively high frequency (Burgess and Steiner, 2007).Roof drilling and bolt installation is labor-intensive and repetitive. These labor-intensive and repetitive requirements can lead to cumulative trauma. Operators are expected to perform a considerable amount of lifting, carrying, bending, reaching and stretching. Back and shoulders become sore from bending and twisting to install bolts or lift and position drill steels, wrenches and bolts. Confined operator spaces also contribute to difficult and awkward working positions for the operators (Cornelius and Turin, 1998).In South Africa, the majority of the roof bolting machines used are “man-in-position” style machines (Fig. 1). This puts the operator in close proximity to where the drilling and bolting process is performed. When proper operation procedures are followed, it has been proven to be a very effective, productive and safe system. The MSHA-certified automatic temporary roof support (ATRS), canopies and dust collection system of Fletcher bolters all provide the operator with unparalleled protection. However, there are some occupational hazards inherent to the zone located next to the drilling and bolting zone. This has led some customers to request relocating the operator away from this zone. The idea being that the operators will no longer be located in the face area, greatly reducing their exposure to dust, noise, machine and geological hazards."

This study examines a process for the recovery of precious metals from difficult minerals that exhibit refractory characteristics to cyanidation: low extraction of metals and high consumption of leaching reagent. A mineral sample from Monte del Favor Mine, located in Hostotipaquillo, Jalisco, Mexico, was physically and chemically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), fire assay and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Two stages of leaching were carried out, first to eliminate manganese from the sample using sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) as a reductive reagent along with sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and second to dissolve gold and silver with hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). The results show extractions of around 96 percent for manganese (Mn), 98.73 percent for silver (Ag) and 83 percent for gold (Au). The usefulness of high acidity and Na2SO3 to obtain better results in Mn and Ag leaching are discussed along with the roles that HCl and NaClO play in Ag and Au dissolution values.

In the design of a modem mill, a stockpile storage system for raw and/or semi-processed ore has become almost indispensable. This paper discusses the benefits of such stockpile storage as well as the various types of belt conveyor stockpiling units available. Particular attention is given to large radial stackers since they offer the greatest flexibility. Stacker control systems and accessory equipment are briefly discussed. Various alternative reclaiming arrangements for stockpiles are reviewed and a discussion of the advantages and drawbacks of each arrangement is included.

New and developing communication systems en-able underground miners to, not only connect to the surface from an increased communication coverage area, but also to be discovered in the event of an emergency. Communication and tracking systems are required by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Ad-ministration (MSHA) regulations, aiming to enhance health and safety and routine production in underground operations. Modeling a mine?s potential communication coverage area will increase overall coverage and efficiency of the communication network itself. Modeling the propagation of wireless communications enables ideal broadcast locations to be found when designing a communications network. Strategic placement of broad-cast devices results in a reliable communication network that can better withstand disruption in daily operation and during a time of emergencies. Research on wireless communication in mines has been ongoing since 1922, when the U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments in its experimental mine in Bruceton, PA (Schiffbauer & Brune, 2006a). Ac cording to Dobroski and Stolarczyk (1982), ?as early as 1922, Bureau of Mines experiments showed that radio propagation in mines was possible but not practical.? In 2006, the underground communication technologies available to the mining industry had inherent problems that limited communication capabilities. Because harsh underground mine environments significantly reduce line of sight and propagation range and introduce power and safety concerns, the overall effectiveness of underground communication technologies were limited. The Turin metro alluvium soil is mainly made of large boulders, cobbles and gravel , few sand and almost no fines. This grain size curve is out of the range of application for EPB and Slurry TBMs. In order to bore 5 of the total 7,5 kms of Line 1 tunnel, two specially designed Lovat EPB TBMs were utilised in combination with a systematic non structural pre-grouting of a small volume rectangular slab just above the tunnel section. The same pre-grouting was not however applicable for lack of access on surface in some sections of the remaining 2,5 km of tunnel that had to be bored below important buildings/structures, with under ground water pressure up to 1,5 bar, with curves radius of 180 m only. For these more critical sections it was necessary to study and implement a new technical solution and improve the capacity of the TBM to work efficiently in EPB mode even in this unsuitable ground and overall conditions. After months of studies the selected and adopted solution has been to inject inside the cutterhead chamber, in addition to the almost standard foams & polymers additive mixes, a suspension of limestone powders. This with the scope of compensating the lack of fines of the natural ground with rock powders.

Although mining is currently one of the smallest academic units on the Colorado School of Mines(CSM) campus, it is alive and well, with nearly 100 undergraduate and graduate students. For many years, Mines has had undergraduate and graduate programs in hard-rock mining. The school has recently transferred its physical mineral processing activities to the Mining Department. The program has also expanded to include tunneling, underground construction and industrial minerals. There are current discussions about increased research activities on cement and other construction materials. The Mining Department also teaches its share of what is called the “distributed core” courses with curricular requirements common to related programs, as well as mining safety and health, in conjunction with our continuing education department.

The Mantos Blancos copper-silver district, a major copper-producing area since 1961, is located on the Tropic of Capricorn about 45 kilometers northeast of the northern Chile port city of Antofagasta, as shown in Figure 1. Copper oxide minerals occurring as atacamite (Cu C1(OH)3) and chrysocolla (copper silicate-hydrate) were discovered in the district in the early 1900's (Knobler and Joseph, 1962). The mine is situated in the northern Atacama Desert, one of the most arid regions on earth, and presently receives less than 1 cm per year of precipitation. The extreme aridity of the Atacama Desert is thought to have prevailed since at least Middle Miocene time (Mortimer et al., 1978) when development of important supervene copper enrichment was slowed in many areas of northern Chile (e.g., Chuquicamata, Exotica). Despite the paucity of precipitation, landform development is mature, with large alluvial fans and alluvial-filled valleys covering much of the region. In addition, the aridity and presence of salts have led to the formation of a sub-surface cementing of alluvium and colluvium by halite-rich caliche ranging from a few centimeters to over 3 meters in thickness. These factors, resulting in poor outcrop exposure, make even reconnaissance mapping difficult.

D.A. Dahlstrom In the paper, a comparison was made between flowsheets using the screen bowl centrifuge and disc filters, respectively, as the primary dewatering device. The authors very effectively show that by raising feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced through reduced viscosity of the water. When a final coal moisture of 10% is required, the net effect of heating the feed is a reduction in thermal requirements because of the lower evaporated load on the dryer. The flowsheet comparison on this, however, was not completely correct. Disc filters do not generally utilize enhanced mechanical dewatering through increased temperature. Horizontal belt filters, through the optimal use of steam heating of the filter cake, have shown significant cost reductions over disc filters where steam is not used. In addition, the authors forgot to mention that there is a certain fraction of the feed that is so fine that it cannot be recovered by the centrifuge economically. That is the function of the filtration device shown in Fig. 4. In subbituminous pipeline coals, this fraction represents more than 10% of the feed. Even after flocculation and belt pressing, the moisture content in the fine fraction is 30%-40. Recent tests on a subbituminous pipeline coal slurry, compared an Eimco-Extractor horizontal belt filter with the screen bowl centrifuge flowsheet shown in Fig. 4. Mechanical dewatering was enhanced through the use of a steam dry zone after the initial dewatering zone. Vacuum pump horsepower was reduced by more than 50% through the use of condensors, and heat recovery was utilized to minimize thermal costs. Thermal drying to 10% moisture by weight was required in both flowsheets. The 0.5 wt% fines in the filtrate were flocculated and recycled to the filter, thus eliminating the belt press and solids mixers. When the three major operating costs (which normally account for 50%-75% of the coal operating costs) of steam, electricity, and flocculants at current prices were calculated, the flowsheets utilizing the Eimco-Extractor had cost savings vs the centrifuge flowsheet of 89¢/t (81o; per st) of surface dry coal. This advantage increases with increasing thermal and electricity prices. I congratulate the authors for the strides made with the screen bowl centrifuge. However, filtration flowsheets continue to be improved and their simplicity and low thermal and electrical requirements should not be so quickly dismissed. ? Reply by N.D. Policow From a technical standpoint, a number of extensive test programs have demonstrated that by raising the feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced whether it be centrifuges or filters performing the separation. Economic constraints usually become the over-riding issue. If an inexpensive source of thermal energy is available, i.e., waste steam, etc., the approach becomes commercially acceptable. For the specific case of coal slurry pipelines, since the dewatering plants will be located close to power generation stations, the preheating approach becomes especially attractive. The cost comparison shown in Fig. 7, which was prepared by a major West Coast engineering firm, contrasted screen bowl centrifuges and disc filters. In both alternatives, a thermal dryer was specified to produce a contract moisture of the final product. Sizing of the thermal dryer on the screen bowl alternative was substantially smaller than that of the filter, since the screen bowl was credited with a four to six percentage point decrease in product moisture compared to the disc. This comparison was made at ambient temperatures and reflected solely the mechanical dewatering capabilities of the two devices. No preheating of the feed was included in this particular comparison. Early generation screen bowl centrifuges operated under the principle of maximum bulk tonnage throughput. Second and third generation machines have followed the trends dictated by the coal industry calling for higher one-pass recoveries than previously demanded. The current generation of high-speed, long-bowl centrifuges permit recoveries of ultrafine solids directly comparable to commercial filter operation. On typical coal preparation plant feeds with nominal 600 E. an X 0 (28 mesh X 0) clean coal, recovery levels in excess of 99% are now obtained. The material that does escape the centrifuge and reports to the main effluent is typically -10 µm, high ash material. We have documented substantial beneficiation effects in screen bowl centrifuge performance with the cake product containing lower ash levels than the feed. On the referenced pipeline, coal tests performed on Western subbituminous coal, we found that the percentage of -10 µm material in the feed was six to eight times greater than normally encountered on eastern Appalachian seams. Our 45-t/h (50-stph) production centrifuge was never set up to maximize recovery. It was used as part of the two-stage dewatering circuit that had been chosen by designers of the proposed pipeline. Recoveries up to 95% were recorded. With field adjustments, that performance could most certainly have been improved. In contrast, manufacturers of the horizontal belt filter provided a small pilot-scale unit that operated on a side stream at the test facility. Numerous combinations of chemical additions were evaluated to determine those that had the best impact on filter performance. Whereas the screen bowl centrifuges operated without chemical addition, producing a dry, fluffy cake, the belt filter required two stages of chemical addition to attain satisfactory performance and high recovery levels. Such words as scarce, tight, and critical are used in regard to supply, leading to priorities, allocations, and possible rationing as make-shift attempts to satisfy demand. Almost every day a new type of shortage appears in another product area that has traditionally been taken for granted as being in perpetual abundance. The range of coverage extends from basic commodities such as oil, chemicals, cement, steel, copper, cotton, etc., through to machine tools, motors, bearings, electronic components, etc. , to those finished outputs that satisfy our fundamental requirements for food, clothing and shelter. Signs of the times appear in cancelled airline flights, unfilled lines at gasoline stations, no available home freezers, lengthy delays in any furniture deliveries, or to that little old lady seen walking out of a local supermarket clutching her hoard of twenty rolls of toilet paper. What a sad commentary to have to make about our Land of Plenty, so long the envy of the World for its material wealth -- and today with its initials "U. S." seemingly standing for ?Unlimited Shortages.?

In 1991, LTV Steel Mining Company decided to close an open pit taconite mine in northeastern Minnesota, using a passive treatment approach consisting of limiting infiltration into the stockpiles and wetland treatment to remove metals. Over 50 million metric tons of sulfide-containing waste had been stockpiled adjacent to the mine during its 30 years of operation. Drainage from the stockpiles contained elevated levels of copper, nickel, cobalt and zinc. Nickel is the major trace metal in the drainages, and prior to closure annual median concentrations ranged from 1.5-50 mg/L. Copper, cobalt and zinc are also present but are generally less than 5% of the nickel values. Median pH ranges from 5.0 to 7.5, but most of the stockpile drainages have pH greater than 6.5. Based on the chemical composition of each stockpile, a cover material was selected. The higher the potential a stockpile had to produce acid drainage, the lower the permeability of the capping material required. Covers ranged from overburden soil removed at the mine to a flexible plastic liner. Predictions of the reduction in infiltration ranged from 40% for the native soil to over 90% for the plastic liner. Five constructed wetlands have been installed since 1992, and have removed 60-90% of the nickel in the drainages. Total capital costs for all the infiltration reduction and wetlands exceeded $6.5 million, but maintenance costs are less than 1% of those for an active treatment plant. Since mine drainage problems can continue for over a hundred years, the lower annual operating costs should pay for the construction of the wetland treatment systems within seven years.

The remaining non-metallic fraction is shredder residue, and contains vast amounts of high value engineering plastics. None are today recovered. Discussed are the developmental approaches used in the first process to recover these valuable plastics. Examined are initial laboratory studies, pilot plant design and construction, product development, results, and flowchart explanations.

HIGH SPEED RAILWAY NETWORK Spain is a very adequate country to develop the high speed railway network thank to its geographical feature which has a 600km long radius, from Madrid- the capital that covers mostly the whole country. Therefore, the railway is a major competitor of the airline. In Spain, the new access to the north and northwest is nowadays the most important railway project which will allow a significant saving of time in the near future to the central plateau and the northern territories. Time savings as well as strict environmental considerations have been the main objective of various studies during the last decade leading to Guadarrama and Pajares tunnels as ones of the optimum solutions. Cordoba-Malaga high speed railway, the extension of the present Madrid—Sevilleline, through the Abdalajis range and the rail project to cross oriental Pyrenees between Spain and France are another two samples of large tunnels currently underway. In these four projects, the ground already encountered and to be soon encountered is highly variable, from very hard granite and gneiss in Guadarrama and Pertus to very poor argillite in Abdalajis, shale in Pajares and schist in Pertus. A number of faults are also expected. Hence, double shield hard rock TBM has been chosen. Figure 1 shows a general scheme in four projects. These four projects represent a total of 2 × 68 km of which 87 km are under DRAGADOS contracts. PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY DRAGADOS Guadarrama Tunnels This project is the longest twin tunnel with 28.377km, in Spain and considered one of the longest in Europe. The operating speed will be 300 km/h. This tunnel will link Madrid and the north territories through Guadarrama range. (Figure 2). The south portal is placed at el. 997.8m above the sea level. The tunnel starts with an inclination of 3‰, increasing until 15‰. After 6,620m length, the tunnel passes under the Morcuera ridge with an overburden of 960m. After 13,400m length, the elevation is 1,024m which is the highest point, and then the tunnel declines with a slope of 9.5‰, 2‰ and 19‰ until the north portal in Segovia province. Rare earth elements have important strategic significance and economic value, and the rare earth elements in coal resources have considerable development potential. This study took coal refuse in the Jungar area of Inner Mongolia, China, as the research object, and investigated the occurrence modes of rare earth elements. A special sequential chemical extraction experiment was designed, and the results showed that the rare earth elements in coal refuse mainly occur in silicate and aluminosilicate form, accounting for approximately 65% of the total rare earth elements. According to the results of SEM-EDS, micro morphology of the sample belonged to the lamellar structure of clay minerals, and Al, Si, Fe, S, Y, and La were all present in the sample. Through SPSS software analysis, rare earth elements have an obvious linear positive correlation with Al, Si, and Fe elements, and a negative correlation with S elements. The rare-earth element occurrence mode in coal refuse can provide a definite theoretical basis for the later extraction and enrichment work.

Previous studies on blast fumes (carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide) clearance and workplace reentry time have overlooked the effects of toxic gases trapped in the muck pile. The currently available models for calculating the mine reentry times assume that all post-blast fumes are emitted upon detonation. However, recent studies reported that as much as 60 to 70% [1–5] of the fumes or gases produced during an underground development blasting could remain trapped in the adjacent rock mass or in the muck pile. Trapped fumes are slowly released [1–5], and when disturbed, high concentrations are released, representing a possible risk during the loading and transportation of the muck pile. In this study, mathematical models were developed using computational fluid dynamics to understand the behavior of the trapped fumes and their effect on mine reentry time. The three scenarios considered for this study include (i) gas emission source with no muck pile volume, (ii) gas emission source with non-porous muck pile volume, and (iii) gas emission source with porous muck pile volume. The estimated reentry times in all three scenarios were compared to see how porous media affects dilution time. It was observed that scenario 3, with fumes trapped in the muck pile, took a significantly longer clearance time (more than double) as compared to scenarios 1 and 2.

The depletion of good-quality phosphate resources, coupled by a need to supply acceptable products at a rapid rate, while meeting the specifications of fertilizer chemical plants, is of significant concern to the phosphate industry, particularly the production of concentrates with tolerable dolomite content. Tremendous efforts have been made in the past to develop an efficient and economical process that can effectively reject dolomite. However, dolomite removal continues to plague the phosphate industry due to several process-specific challenges being encountered with various beneficiation technologies. In this regard, detailed characterization of phosphate reserves is crucial to understand textural limitations and help design appropriate strategies to achieve quality products. In this paper, the development of procedures to establish dolomite rejection/francolite recovery curves for gravity preconcentration of pebble phosphate from Central Florida is described using high-speed X-ray computed tomography (HSXCT). The developed procedure is illustrated with the analysis of high MgO pebble phosphate samples (10.39 mm × 1 mm) received from South Pasture and Four Corners locations operated by the Mosaic company. The rejection/recovery curves were calculated for each sample for five different particle size classes to observe the trend in rejection/recovery with variation in particle size. In order to evaluate the reliability of the HSXCT data, analysis using the high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) technique was performed on one particular sample (FC-3-1). Finally, to assess the separation efficiency, the HSXCT and HRXCT rejection/recovery curves obtained were compared to experimental gravity preconcentration results reported in the literature. In this way, liberation limitations for gravity preconcentration in the processing of pebble phosphate have been established based on X-ray computed tomography analysis.

Hypochlorite leaching system is a strong oxidizing solution for metal sulfides, which are naturally associated with gold extraction. This study evaluated the hypochlorite leaching of refractory gold ore by using the response surface method–central composite design (RSM-CCD) as a statistical approach in determining the optimum condition of gold extraction from refractory gold ore. The studied parameters for the gold recovery were pH (4 to 6), concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 (0.5 to 1.5 M) and NaCl (2.5 to 3.5 M) in the solution. It was found that the maximum gold extraction of 82.46% (13.85 g/t) was achieved at a pH of 4.0 with NaCl and Ca(OCl)2 concentrations of 2.93 M and 1.08 M, respectively. The statistical analysis also revealed that the amount of gold recovery in chloride solution was significantly depended on pH as the main factor, followed by concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 and NaCl.

The EVINOS-MORNOS tunnel project with its 30 km of length is one of the longest hydraulic tunnel in the world realised with TBM method. The adverse geological conditions, the high cover and the short construction schedule were a great challenge for the successful construction of this tunnel. The paper will describe: the criteria adopted for the tunnel design, the selection of the construction methods and equipment, the productions of the 4 TBMs adopted and the comparison of the behaviour of the different type of TBMs in the various rock conditions, including special conditions, the characteristics of the adopted in situ and precast linings, a comparison between the foreseen and actual construction schedules, the contractual implications of realising a tunnel in such a severe and complex conditions.

In oil sands mining, tailings are voluminous unwanted by-products generated from extracting the desired mineral from the mined ore. Dyke construction and backfilling activities require well-managed techniques to facilitate progressive reclamation at the earliest opportunity. This directly affects the sustainability and profitability of the mining operation. This research introduces a goal programming framework that simultaneously optimizes the (1) production schedule with limited duration stockpiling and directional mining; (2) dyke construction schedule; (3) size, shape, and location of tailings-cells; and (4) mining and processing production targets. The results show that in creating in-pit tailings-cells designs, decreasing the mining-cells volume and increasing the number of mining-cells improve the net present value of the operation due to increased operational flexibility. The model generated a uniform schedule for ore and practical tailings-cells designs for backfilling activities. Integrating tailingscells optimization into oil sands mine planning and waste management ensures the efficient use of in-pit mined-out areas required for sustainable operations.

For an industry that provides more than half of the nation’s energy needs, the U.S. coal industry still attracts negative publicity. However, the nation’s energy appetite continues to increase. And political leaders and the public are beginning to understand that alternative fuels will not be enough to keep up with that appetite. Does that mean the nation will now embrace the coal industry? No, according to speakers at the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute (RMCMI) meeting. The industry still needs to sell the public on coal’s advantages over other fuels.
