Samples collected during the exploration phase of mining represent baseline conditions at the site. As such, they can be very important in forecasting potential environmental impacts should mining proceed, and can become measurements against which future changes are compared. Constituents in stream water draining mined and mineralized areas tend to be geochemically, spatially, and temporally variable, which presents challenges in collecting both exploration and baseline water-quality samples. Because short-term (daily) variations can complicate long-term trends, it is important to consider recent findings concerning geochemical variability of stream-water constituents at short-term timescales in designing sampling plans. Also, adequate water-quality information is key to forecasting potential ecological impacts from mining. Therefore, it is useful to collect baseline water samples adequate for geochemical and toxicological modeling. This requires complete chemical analyses of dissolved constituents that include major and minor chemical elements as well as physicochemical properties (including pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen) and dissolved organic carbon. Applying chemical-equilibrium and appropriate toxicological models to water-quality information leads to an understanding of the speciation, transport, sequestration, bioavailability, and aquatic toxicity of potential contaminants. Insights gained from geochemical and toxicological modeling of water-quality data can be used to design appropriate mitigation and for economic planning for future mining activities.

The gold content of porphyry copper deposits ranges from less than 0.05 g/t to more than I g/t ((0.0017 to 0.035 oz per st) and the average is about 0.05 g/t (0.0017 oz per st) gold. Perhaps the highest grade mineralization found near a porphyry cop¬per deposit is the Ok Tedi Gold Cap ore body whose grade falls in the 2 to 3 g/t (0.07 to 0.1 oz per st) range. It is difficult to define a gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposit. All porphyry copper ore bodies contain some gold, but there seems to be a fairly sharp break in the gold content at about 0.1 g/t (0.003 oz per st) gold. There is also a problem in identifying dis¬seminated gold deposits that may have an indirect relationship to porphyry copper systems. This relationship is clear cut in deposits such as the Ok Tedi Gold Cap, the El Hueso deposit, the Fortitude and West de¬posits at Battle Mountain, NV, and the Sur¬prise deposit at Ely, NV. There are many other bulk disseminated, epithermal-type gold deposits - McCoy, NV, for example - that might be related to a porphyry system but where this relationship is remains very uncertain. In such places as the Goldfields and Tonapah district in Ne¬vada and in the El Indio, Chile district, there may be a vertically stacked ore deposit rela¬tionship between near surface epithermal deposits and disseminated molybdenite and chalcopyrite enargite mineralization at depth that may represent a deep porphyry system. This, however, has not been positively demonstrated. Most of the bulk epithermal gold deposits are probably not related to porphyry copper systems. Exceptions would probably be Ok Tedi, El Indio, El Hueso, Battle Mountain, and Lepanto where vertical or lateral zoning relationships are more apparent. This author believes that porphyry copper systems are related to a relatively unique type of intrusion that is probably distinct from, for example, the McCoy intrusivebody. For that reason, deposits such as McCoy, Chimney Creek, and the like will not be included in the definition of gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposits for this article. The interpretation of the origin of several of the deposits previously mentioned are subject to an unusual amount of contro¬versy. The Chinese energy and mineral industries are readying themselves for a period of dynamic transition, unprecedented in the country's long and sometimes turbulent history. The transition comes as a result of the government's new program of "Four Modernizations" in its agricultural, defense, industry, and science and technology sectors. The announced program is generally considered by Western observers to be a moderate, pragmatic approach to get China on the road to industrial parity with Western nations by the year 2000. The game plan calls for integration with the West to beef up Chinese know-how and the purchase of foreign technology to supplement areas where China lacks the ability to do so itself. While the role of energy and minerals is not specifically mentioned in the program, it was made clear to ME that China realizes the basis of any sustained modernization program is tied closely to the health of its minerals sector. Various published reports have indicated the existence of an already vibrant energy and minerals sector with world rank production in coal, iron ore, tin, antimony, cement, pyrite, asbestos and tungsten to name just a few. For the most part, except for the export metals, the primary focus of China's production has been on fulfilling domestic needs. Now the new initiatives are aimed not only at self-sufficiency, but also on propelling the country's natural resource clout into international prominence. With a mineral resource base that is considered by many westerners a potential bonanza, China's new long march toward modernization will be an exciting adventure, well worth watching. Big Projects Spark Excitement China's renewed commitment to a more liberal program is as much a desire to "walk on its own two legs" as it is a backlash from the frustrating years that followed the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and early 1970s. Much of the early excitement was initiated by China's Premier and Party Chairman Hua Guo-feng in speaking to the fifth National People's Congress (NPC) in 1978. Here, Chairman Hua presented the Communist Party's 10-year blueprint for economic development. Specifically, the Party's plans called for completion of 120 large-scale industrial projects by 1985. Oxide ores can consume enormous amounts of expensive sulfuric acid. The problem is amplified with increasing heap heights. One solution is to provide a thin liner and drainage system between each lift of ore, thereby intercepting the pregnant leach leach solution (PLS) after it exits the active lift. However, these liner systems require special attention to hydraulics, slope stability and geomembrane design criteria. Inadequate attention to the first two can result in reduced recoveries, increased acid consumption andsystem failures. The geomembrane selection criteria are different from the base liner, and optimizing its selection can have significant effects on the operation’s bottom line.

INTRODUCTION The transportation of men, supplies, and mined material from an underground operation is the connecting link between the mine plant and the surface plant. Unless the mine is accessed by a drift or adit, some form of hoisting system is necessary for slopes or shafts. This chapter will deal with the selection of wire ropes and hoists, two of the most important consider¬ations when designing a hoisting system for an under¬ground mine. WIRE ROPES General A wire rope is designed to transmit forces longitudi¬nally along its axis. Wire rope is used in a variety of mining applications because of its flexibility, high ten¬sile strength, and dependability. Shaft hoisting ropes and principal slope haulage ropes are usually custom-¬built; however, proper rope selection for slushers, car spotters, etc. should not be overlooked. Wire ropes for shafts and slopes, since they represent the life line for the mines, should be of the very highest quality improved plow steel. This quality is necessary to deal with the conditions of loading, winding, vibration, abrasion, and corrosion. Tables I and 2 display the specifications for the typical wire ropes used for mine haulage applications. The 6 x 19-class haulage rope is used for most hoisting where abrasion is not critical. On the other hand, where abrasion is critical, such as a slope application, 6 X 7-class haulage ropes are preferred. For other mining applications, manufactur¬ers' handbooks should be consulted. Selection The selection of a wire rope for a mining situation consists of simply applying appropriate safety factors to a calculated maximum rope pull and comparing the result to the listed breaking strength of the rope under consideration. Table 3 can be used for determin¬ing the minimum factors of safety for wire ropes. To determine the maximum rope pull, the following quantities must be known: the rope weight in pounds (x), the conveyance weight in pounds (y), and the weight in pounds of the load in the conveyance (z). These values are used to calculate the load due to gravity, the load due to conveyance friction, and the load due to rope friction. When these loads are added together, as shown in Eq. 1, the maximum (static) rope pull (RPS) can be derived:

It is difficult to remove cadmium from raw indium using only electrolytic refining because their standard potentials are similar. In this paper, physical and chemical methods were used to remove Cd from raw indium. Indium metal is vacuum refined for two hours at 400°C with a vacuum pressure of 20 Pa. In this process, 99.70% of the Cd can be removed. The removal rate of Cd reaches 90% to 95% when indium is further smelted for 10 minutes in a 20% glycerin solution of KI and I2 at 180°C. When pre-indium is electrolytic refined in an In2(SO4)3-H2SO4 system, in which the indium content is 80 to 100 g/L, the pH is 2.0-3.0 and the current density is 80 to 100 A/m2, the contents of the impurities decrease and the purity of the indium product reaches 99.99%.

The Northeast Corridor Superconducting Maglev Project (SCMAGLEV) entails construction of a high-speed train system between Washington, DC and New York City, with the first leg between Washington and Baltimore, MD. This innovative project will shorten travel times between Washington DC and Baltimore to approximately 15 minutes, and connect Washington, DC to New York City in under an hour. In 2021 the draft EIS is expected to be issued for comment with a Final EIS/ROD anticipated by early 2022. This paper provides an update on the project as presented in Gall et al. (2020) and discusses the economic and environmental benefits, preferred alignment alternative, preliminary staging and launching of the TBMs for construction, and preliminary station design.

The combination of high moisture and low heating value has restricted most low-rank coal (LRC) usage worldwide to mine-mouth power generation. Coals from Usibelli Coal Mine and the Beluga coal field have a heating value of approximately 8,000 Btu/lb and 28% moisture. Hydrothermal treatment (at 275 to 352'C) of lump coal from Usibelli Coal Mine and Beluga coal field enhanced the heating value of the coal, on an equilibrium moisture basis, from 8,000 Btu/lb to nearly 12,000 Btu/lb. The product coal with high heating value and 0.2 % S is an environmentally acceptable premium fuel. The Hardgrove grindability index of the coal is greatly improved, further enhancing its value. Increase in hydrothermal drying temperature promotes vesiculation of resinite. Vitrinite reflectance increased to 0.72 and vitrinite was subjected to widespread visiculation resulting in a coke like structure indicative that the material went through the fluid stage.

DOUG HALBE: Second in our quick run-through on "Operating Ideas That Have Saved Me Some Bucks," was Debbie Laney of Rayrock Mines. Debbie apologizes. She can't be here. But she said, "Doug, don't worry. I've asked Mary Korpi to present the paper. We're both short, blond, and wear glasses. Nobody will know." [laughter] Mary, I caught it right away. You ladies can't fool us. Debbie, who wrote the paper, has spent almost her entire career in operations. She is currently metallurgical manager of Rayrock Mines in Valmy, Nevada. Mary Korpi is also a real operator (that doesn't sound right). She has been responsible for a number of operating areas at Newmont's Nevada operations, and she is currently taking a break from operations as manager of public relations/employee communications for Newmont Gold in Carlin. MARY KORPI: They told us this year at Newmont that we were going to have to work twice as hard. I had no idea it meant I would have to work for another company, too. Over the years, and many times in association with work for mid- to small-size mining companies, there have been two areas that seem to have been the focus of cost savings when looking at new facilities or new processes.

The health and safety of miners is critical in the industry. Prolonged exposure to dust-laden air results in irreversible ailments like pneumoconiosis that have a severe impact on their lives. Operations use various personal protective devices (PPEs) to alleviate their exposure to respirable dust. Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) is one such device that uses high- efficiency filters and positive pressure masks to shield miners from airborne contaminants. Used in the medical and other industries, these respirators efficiently protected healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recently, the mining industry has shown a growing interest in adopting this PPE to ensure safe working conditions for the miners. We present an introduction to the PAPRs and discuss their dust capture efficacy in this manuscript.

Physical and chemical conditions permitting, in-situ leaching (ISL) of uranium offers a variety of advantages over conventional production methods including less surface disturbance and less solid waste. Commercial production of uranium by in-situ leaching techniques was initiated in 1963 in the Shirley Basin of Wyoming by Utah Construction. On a world-wide basis, ISL uranium production amounted to about 13.2 million pounds U3O8 in1999, approximately 16% of world output. Both acid and alkaline systems are used, the selection of which is primarily dependent upon groundwater quality and related reclamation requirements. ISL offers low capital costs per unit of annual capacity and is particularly flexible in adapting to changing market conditions.

New approaches that increase hydrometallurgical recovery from refractory minerals in below-mill-cut-off-grade sulfide copper ore can add significant value, improve profitability and increase ore reserves. On Feb. 11, 2005, more than 20 mining professionals gathered in Elko, NV for a day-long round-table discussion on heap leaching. Attendees included project managers, operators and environmental professionals. They represented 10 mining organizations. Knight Piésold sponsored the special event. Its seven representatives included three staff members from the company’s Elko Operation, and one each from its Denver, Cajamarca (Peru) and Vancouver offices. The roundtable format was chosen to allow people from the mining industry to share ideas and experiences in an open forum. Rather than presenting prepared talks, spontaneity was encouraged. This resulted in a lively and enjoyable discussion.

The 20th Century saw the modern mining industry enriched by one outstanding method of extracting of mineral resources called Borehole Mining (BHM). Mean while, despite its successful track record in wide ranging locales, few specialists are yet aware of this technology. The intent of this article is to introduce borehole mining to a wider spectrum of drilling and mining professionals. The BHM method is based on in-situ water jet cutting of rock mass. On Fig. 1 the schematic of the method is presented. The borehole mining tool 1 is lowered into the borehole 2 and high pressure water 3 is pumped down. At the bottom part of the tool, one portion of that water comes out through the hydromonitor nozzle 4 in a shape of water jet 5 and cuts the material 6 creating slurry 7. The other portion of high pressure water then comes to the hydroelevator 8 (jet pump, eductor) which produces a vacuum. When the slurry reaches this vacuum zone, the eductor sucks the slurry and pumps it up to the surface, where rock parts are separated from water in a tank 9 or a pond and clarified water is pumped down again closing the re-circulating BHM water supply system. The borehole mining tool is suspended on a drill rig tower 10 which allows the tool to rotate and move vertically along the borehole axis. While extracting rock mass, underground caverns (stopes) 11 are created. If necessary, compressed air 12 can be injected to the raising slurry flow to create an airlift effect. Also, a secondary agent 13 (such as oil, foam, etc.) can be added to the stope through the gap between the tool and the casing. As seen from the illustration, BHM is the remote mining method of extracting of mineral resources through boreholes by high pressure water jets.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) uses light-scattering dust monitors (nephelometers) in its research to develop dust controls to reduce respirable silica dust overexposures in miners. Recently, the model 1500-pDR, an active nephelometer, was introduced by Thermo Scientific. Testing was completed to ensure compatibility with the metal/nonmetal mine dust personal sampling unit (M/NMDPSU). Results of testing demonstrated that gravimetric concentrations measured from the 1500-pDR are comparable to the gravimetric concentrations measured using the M/NMDPSU, without need for correction, under commonly observed dust loading conditions.

How did you get into mining; were you from a mining town or mining family? Not at all. I grew up in northwest Kansas. I liked to hunt and fish, so I thought it would be fun to work for a company that made knives or guns. It seemed like metallurgical engineers would be something those companies could use, so I started in physical metallurgy. I got a summer job at the great Climax molybdenum mine near Leadville, CO shoveling muck onto conveyors. I was hooked. I loved everything about mining, so in the fall, I changed majors from physical metallurgy to mineral processing. For many years you actually discouraged young people from studying the mining disciplines. Could that be right? That’s true.

Introduction More and more women engineers are joining the traditionally male mining industry. Are they successful? Do they encounter special problems? How do men in mining respond? How can the mining industry effectively use its female resources? What contributes to the success of a woman in mining? What can male engineers do to ease the entry of female professionals into the workforce? An STM survey conducted last spring provided some answers to these questions. All BS graduates in mining, mineral engineering, and extractive metallurgy from 1960-1979 were surveyed. Nearly 60% of the female graduates, from 17 universities, completed questionnaires. The women were asked why they chose mining, how they relate to predominantly male co-workers, what job skills they have gained, and what areas of work they most enjoy. They were also asked how problems of a two-career family are solved. Data were gathered on salaries, titles, specialties, and products handled. Respondents, assured of confidentiality, are identified only by title. Many male mining executives were also questioned for their advice to women in mining. Profile of the Survey Participant The "typical" female mining engineer works with coal, is employed by an operating company, feels she works very hard to prove her abilities, does not want to be treated as an anomaly, and someday wants to be an independent consultant. Of the respondents, 44% listed coal as the most familiar product, 12% said copper, and the rest listed products from industrial chemicals to oil. Titles varied widely but women managers are rarely found. However, the majority of the survey population graduated after 1976 and thus lacks substantial experience. Of 102 female graduates, only 25 graduated before 1977. Since then, there has been a steady increase. The American Association of Engineering Societies reported that in 1980 more than 100 degrees were awarded to women in minerals engineering. Education Highly Valued Twenty-two percent of the women surveyed had graduate degrees, 38% planned further education, and 12% listed a PhD as their goal. The majority of graduate degrees are in technical fields. There were only two MBAs. Five women intended to pursue law degrees, and one woman, with a mining engineering degree and an MBA, is a part-time law student. Along with advanced education, the women agree that production experience is needed for career advancement. However, only 28% of the women have worked in production. Many women, especially younger grads, commented that these are the toughest jobs to get. This is a universal complaint, from males as well as females, though women seem to encounter more opposition. Several women mentioned they were small or slight of build and managers tended to shy away from hiring them for production jobs. Two-Career Marriages The most difficult problem for two-career couples is relocation. Whose career takes priority? Fifty percent of the women said transfers or offers would be examined on a case-by-case basis, weighing pros and cons for both parties. The husband's career took priority with 47% of the women; their own careers, with 3%. These statistics conflict with comments from two employee relations managers. Both said most female engineers they've encountered are married to men who follow their wives' careers. Seventy per cent of the married respondents said their husbands were also engineers. Four said their husbands were engineers at the same company. Some male and female engineers met on the job; others joined the company as a "package deal." Both partners being engineers can ease relocation problems, since an area or company offering one spouse a job can often provide a spot for the other. A company may benefit by getting two new hires for the relocation costs of one. Most companies contacted have policies that allow married couples to work at the same division, but discouraged them from working in the same department. With 40% of today's marriages ending in divorce, one risk is that one or both parties may quit. One personnel executive said there were several couples, each spouse in a different discipline, who were work¬ing out very well at his division. However, he recognized the potential for problems if, for instance, one gets promoted and the other doesn't, or salary increases are unequal. The personnel executive said he has actively recruited married couples, and would again, were each person competent.

Planning of New York’s new subway line dictated the location of shallow underground station caverns and track crossovers. Clear span openings ranging from70 feet to 100 feet and lengths in excess of 1000 feet, coupled with low rock cover ranging from 25 feet to 40 feet required judicious selection of construction methods, equipment, and proper sequencing of the excavation stages. Rock classifications alone could not predict the behavior of the rock mass during construction. A robust design procedure that considered most of the important aspects of rock behavior and elements of shallow tunnel design, minimized the negative impacts of variable geotechnical data. This paper describes the intricacies of the planning and design of the $16 billion Second Avenue Subway with insight into how to overcome the design complexities and construction challenges of the urban underground.

The mineralogy of the Biwabik Iron Formation changes dramatically from west to east as the formation nears the basal contact of the Duluth Complex. This reflects a contact metamorphism that took place with the emplacement of the igneous Duluth Complex at tem¬peratures as high as 1200 °C. However, the mineralogy of the Biwabik Iron Formation also varies vertically through the stratigraphy of the unit. This variability in both the vertical and horizontal dimensions makes it difficult to predict exact horizons where specific minerals will occur. The iron-formation has been subdivided into four broad stratigraphic units (lower cherty, lower slaty, upper cherty, and upper slaty) and into four lateral mineralogical zones (1-4). Zone 1, the westernmost zone, is characterized by quartz, magnetite, hematite, carbonates, talc, chamosite, greenalite, minnesotaite, and stilpnomelane. The silicate mineralogy in Zone 2 of the Biwabik Iron Forma¬tion changes very little. However, the minerals begin to change dramatically in Zone 3. Most significantly, Zone 3 is characterized by the appearance of grunerite in both a tabular form and a fibrous form. In Zone 4, the original silicate minerals have completely reacted, and a new suite of minerals occupies the iron-formation. These include grunerite, hornblende, hedenbergite, ferrohypersthene (ferrosilite), and fayalite.
