The gold deposits of the farms Lisbon and Berlyn in the Eastern Transvaal by V. C. H. R. BRERETON* (Visitor) This paper describes the discovery and recovery of gold, over a period dating back to the 1870s. on the farms Lisbon and Berlyn, situated approxim ately 1I km north-east of Pilgrims Rest. where mining ceased in July 1971. 99 years after gold was first discovered in the Pilgrims Rest and Sabie districts. Included in the paper are accounts of the discovery and mining operations of the Lisbon-Berlyn Company from 1884 to 1890. The operations of small companies and syndicates. the superficial winning of gold by diggers, and the encouraging reports of four mining engineers in 1890 are also mentioned.

The measures taken by Rand Carbide Limited from the 1950s to 1976 to control dust emission from the electric furnaces at its Witbank factory are described. A new design of furnace for calcium carbide followed by a dry-fabric filtration plant for the furnace gases was not successful in arresting the dust. A 131 m chimney commissioned in 1968 effectively dispersed the dust-laden gases from both carbide and ferrosilicon production and so brought considerable alleviation. In 1974 a bag-filter dust-collecting plant was successfully commissioned on a 6 MV.A carbide furnace, and this was followed in 1976 by a bag-filter plant on a 46,5 MV.A ferrosilicon furnace. The company has spent considerable effort and money over two decades in trying to combat dust emission, but eventual success had to await technological development.

Pointing out that South Africa needs to utilize its wealth-creating activities, together with local and international investment, to further develop its industries, the address asserts that the mining and minerals industries, especially in the manufacture of beneficiated products, offer the greatest potential for South Africa to achieve its goal. As many mineral-beneficiation processes are based on pyrometallurgical routes, the address goes on to describe some historical - pyrometallurgical operations and to indicate probable developments in the future. These include growth in the fields of both precious and base metals. After discussing environmental and recycling matters, together with manpower requirements, the address concludes that the major growth in the mining and minerals industries will occur in the manufacture of steel, stainless steel, ferro-alloys (particularly ferrochromium), aluminium, and titania slag.

A semi-empirical kinetic model was developed for the atmospheric leaching of a Ni-Cu matte in copper sulphate-sulphuric acid solution. Kinetics of the leaching process was studied as a function of initial copper ion concentration, initial acid concentration, temperature, stirring rate and particle size distribution. The kinetic model was developed on the basis of the leaching mechanism and chemical reactions of the leaching system investigated, and was evaluated by comparing the model predictions to experimental data. The model was found to satisfactorily fit the trends in the leaching of the metals, namely copper, nickel, cobalt and iron.

SYNOPSIS Wet high-intensity magnetic separation was examined as a method for the recovery of copper and lead from Tsumeb flotation tailings. Bench-scale and pilot-plant tests were conducted and, despite the very low magnetic susceptibilities of all the complex copper and lead minerals, copper and lead recoveries of over 60 per cent and almost 50 per cent respectively were obtained at a combined copper and lead grade of up to 13,5 per cent. The recoveries were found to be practically independent of magnetic induction in the range 0,5 to 2,2 T, and the grade of the magnetic concentrate decreased with increasing magnetic induction. The grade of the magnetic concen¬trate improved when the flowrate of the slurry was increased, and desliming was found to have a profound effect on the. metallurgical process. Particles smaller than 10 µm were not recovered, and their presence in inefficiently deslimed samples impaired the overall performance of the magnetic separation

Some aspects of the mechanical behaviour of chromium-containing dual-phase 3CR12 steel were investigated as a function of the temperature and strain rate. The yield stress was found to depend on both the temperature and the strain rate, with no substantial differences between the longitudinal and the transverse directions. The strain-rate sensitivity decreased with increasing temperature. The yield stress could be presented as a function of a temperature-strain-rate parameter. Impact test results showed substantial differences between the energy absorption of the transverse and longitudinal specimens above the ductile-brittle transition temperature. Changes in energy absorption with temperature were gradual for specimens in both orientations, and the transition from ductile to brittle behaviour occurred between 373 and 173 K. Strain rates ahead of the tip of notches with different geometries were calculated and measured experimentally.

The incorporation of individual cooling in a compressed-oxygen closed-circuit breathing apparatus by E. SHVARTZ, M.Sc. (U.C.L.A.), Ph.D. (U.S.C.) (Visitor) and N. B. STRYDOM, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow) A conventional compressed-oxygen breathing apparatus, which did not include provisions for dehumidification of the inspired air at high environmental temperatures, was tested at these temperatures with and without conductive cooling in the form of 2 kg of pre-frozen ice placed inside the breathing bag of the apparatus. The pre-frozen ice provided conductive cooling of the soda lime and of the chest and abdomen of the subject, who performed moderate work at 50,1 "c. Without cooling, the subject was exhausted after 35 minutes because of a wet-bulb temperature of the inspired air of 46"c. With cooling, the subject finished 2 hours of work. This was possible by keeping the soda lime at a relatively Iow temperature, which resulted in a wet-bulb temperature of the inspired air of only 42 °C after 2 hours, and by conductive cooling of the chest, which resulted in the maintenance of a relatively Iow heart rate and rectal temperature.

The Stilfontein and Buffelsfontein Gold Mines, near Klerksdorp in the Transvaal, had accumulated a large amount of uranium-containing residue and, when the price of uranium rose in the 1970s, consideration was given to the possible recovery of this uranium. Preliminary tests showed that concentration of the uranium prior to leaching would not be economic. However, the pyrite in the residue could be concentrated by flotation, and the flotation concentrate could be roasted to pro¬vide both enough acid for leaching the uranium and a calcine from which the gold could be recovered. The feasibility study showed that a uranium operation of 270 kt per month would be most economically attrac¬tive, and a plant of that size was accordingly designed and built. In the first six years of its existence, the plant treated over 20 Mt of residue and produced about 3,5 kt of uranium oxide. During that time, the plant was con¬tinually being improved to make it more reliable and cost-efficient. This paper analyses the operation of the plant during its first six years from the viewpoints of its mechanical, process, and economic performance. The criteria on which the selection of the process was based are reviewed and compared with the actual performance of the plant, emphasis being placed on the leaching, solid-liquid separation, recovery, and purification stages.

Scrap printed circuit boards were selectively smelted at 1 200°C to produce a metallic alloy having three phases. These phases were identified as a lead-rich phase, a low tin content alpha bronze phase, and a high tin delta phase. Electrochemical leaching studies on this alloy were done in 1 mol/dm3 sulfuric acid or in 2 mol/dm3 hydrochloric acid (adjusted to an ionic strength of 3 mol/dm3). The lead rich phase was more strongly passivated in sulfate media, and in this medium the high tin content delta bronze was more resistant to corrosion than the lower tin alpha bronze phase. In chloride medium the lead phase and both bronze phases corroded readily, but with current densities about an order of magnitude lower than in sulfate medium (static conditions) for the bronze phases. The high tin delta bronze phase was found to form a passivating layer in sulfate media. A similar layer was not seen in chloride medium. The leaching studies in sulfate medium also showed the existence of an alpha bronze phase of lower tin content in the centres of the alpha phase grains. This phase was quite resistant to leaching in sulfate medium.

In the quest to reduce overall costs and improve operating efficiency, the application of GPS based technology in open pit mining has evolved significantly in recent times. Venetia Mine has been leading the way in the De Beers group in the implementation of these systems and the realization of significant benefits from them. Following on from the successful results and the notable benefits obtained from the Wenco Truck Dispatching system and the Caterpillar CAES system on the loading and dozing equipment, Venetia has implemented the first fully functional and integrated GPS based drill monitoring system in southern Africa to its drilling operations. This paper elaborates on the concept of drill monitoring and how the vision for the application of the system at Venetia has developed and been implemented. The paper further describes the workflow involved, beginning with the initial test work done with SSI Kaltex and the Australian Drill Advisor system through to the final details of the integration of the Aquila system with the CATERPILLAR Computer Aided Earthmoving System (CAES) and the alliance with SandvikRock Tools. Most importantly, the paper details the benefits that are derived from drill monitoring and the use of the information generated by such a system. Venetia has pioneered the move towards smart partnerships and alliances with strategic suppliers within the De Beers group. The area of drilling, as the important start of the entire mining process, has been no exception and the final part of the paper covers how drill monitoring provides vitally important information that enables a supply partnership, to function cost-effectively and profitably for both parties involved. By having the type of accuracy, detail, validity and timeousness in the information being received as a result of the implementation of such a system, better management decisions can betaken, creating a more focused and efficient mining environment. In these times of increasing costs and reduced commodity prices, the mining industry will be required to continue pushing the boundaries on these technology applications in order to remain competitive.

The mechanical behaviors of fully-grouted long-embedded cablebolts actually used in situ are very non-linear in pull tests and are different from those of short-embedded cablebolts. We have conducted the pull tests of long-embedded cablebolts installed in mockup rock test blocks, which are 4m in the longitudinal length. In order to investigate the mechanical behaviors inside the test block, the axial load distribution along the cablebolt and locations of acoustic emission events were measured during each pull test. It was found that the axial force distributions were quite linear and that the gradients were interpreted as the grout bond strength by taking into consideration the stress balance at the infinitesimal segment of a cablebolt. Nous avons mené des essais de traction des boulons-câbles longs installés dans une maquette de fond rocheux servant d’éprouvette d’une longueur longitudinale de 4 m. Afin d’étudier les comportements mécaniques intérieurs de l’éprouvette, la répartition de la force axiale du boulon-câble et l’émission acoustique ont été mesurées durant chaque essai de traction. Il s’est avéré que les répartitions de la force axiale sont sensiblement linéaires et que leurs gradients représentent la résistance d’adhésion en prenant en compte l’équilibre de contraintes à la partie infinitésimale d’un boulon-câble. Das mechanische Verhalten von ganz eingegossenen, lang eingebetteten Kabelbolzen, die vor Ort eingesetzt werden, ist bei Zugprüfungen sehr nichtlinear und anders als das von kurz eingebetteten Kabelbolzen. Es wurden Zugprüfungen mit lang eingebetteten Kabelbolzen durchgeführt, die in Prüfblöcken (Gesteinsattrappen) mit 4 m Länge eingelassen waren. Zur Untersuchung des mechanischen Verhaltens in den Prüfblöcken wurden die Axiallastverteilung entlang des Kabelbolzens sowie das Auftreten von Schallemission im Verlauf jeder Zugprüfung gemessen. Es ergab sich, dass die axiale Kraftverteilung recht linear ist, und die Gradienten wurden unter Berücksichtigung des Kräftegleichgewichts am infinitesimal kleinen Punkt eines Kabelbolzens als Haftfestigkeit interpretiert.

Trends in PGM demand?The conference paper will cover a concise analysis of demand trends, which will include the major PGM end-use sectors (autocatalysis, jewellery, glass, petroleum, nitric acid, medical/dental) and will touch on the investment sector. Reference will be made to environmental legislation affecting global emission standards, trends in PGM loadings and the substitutability of platinum and palladium in this end-use sector. Observations will also be made on the jewellery sector, and the development of Chinese and Japanese demand. Trends in primary and secondary PGM supply?Similarly the paper will summarize historic and current global mine supply and primary production trends for PGMs, referencing recent expansions, their deliverability, and other projects coming on line. Consideration will be given to the grade and geology of PGMs worldwide and metallurgical developments. PGMs produced as by-products of base metal production and early PGM recycling estimates will also be appraised. In order to gain a wide-ranging appreciation of the industry?s long-term cost trends of producing virgin PGM metals, the paper will look at the cost and profit dynamics of global production on a regional basis (Western Bushveld, Eastern Bushveld, Northern Bushveld, Zimbabwe, USA, Canada and Russia). Extrapolating tomorrow?s PGM market and forecasting metal prices?Based on established industry trends and market practices Stephen Forrest will conclude by unveiling a variety of thought-provoking extrapolations of today?s and tomorrows platinum, palladium and rhodium markets to conference delegates. Because geostatistics together with block modeling has not been studied in detail before in the rock mechanics, a two-year research program to investigate the practical use of geotechnical modeling was started in Finland in 1999. According to research work results block modeling gives good estimate of overall rock mass quality but it can not identify individual structures like faults and narrow weakness zones. Weakness zones and faults should be mapped from drill cores, surface mapping, geophysical methods etc. and manually generate 3-D structural model. Rock mechanical 3-D modeling can be used for preliminary stope dimensioning and preliminary reinforcement design. Detailed design needs rock quality mapping from drifts during excavation work. La géostatistique associée à la modélisation par blocs n'ayant pas été étudiée en détail jusqu'à présent dans la mécanique des roches, un programme de recherche sur deux ans visant à examiner l'utilisation pratique de la modélisation géotechnique a été lancé en Finlande en 1999. D'après les résultats des travaux de recherche, la modélisation par blocs donne une bonne estimation de la qualité générale de la masse rocheuse mais elle ne permet pas d'identifier les structures individuelles comme les failles et les zones géologiquement dégradées étroites. Ces zones et failles devraient être cartographiées à partir de carottes de sondages, d'une cartographie de surface, de méthodes géophysiques, etc. et générer manuellement un modèle de structure 3D. La modélisation mécanique des roches en 3D peut être utilisée pour un dimensionnement de la chambre et un plan d'armature préliminaires. Un plan détaillé nécessite l'élaboration d'une cartographie de la qualité des roches des galeries lors des travaux d'excavation. Da man früher Geostatik und Block-Modellieren in der Gebirgsmechanik nicht detailliert untersuchte, wurde 1999 in Finnland ein zweijähriges Untersuchungsprogramm in Angriff genommen. Aufgrund der Untersuchungsergebnisse ergibt das Block-Modellieren eine gute Beurteilung der gesamten Gebirgsmassenqualität, kann jedoch einzelne Strukturen wie Verwerfungen und kleine Schwachzonen nicht identifizieren. Schwachzonen und Verwerfungen müssen demnach aus Bohrkernen, oder mit Hilfe von Oberflächenkartierung, geophysischen Verfahren usw. ermittelt und danach ein 3-D-Strukturmodell manuell erstellt werden. Felsmechanisches 3-D-Modellieren ist für die vorbereitende Abbaudimensionierung und für die vorbereitende Bewehrungsplanung verwendbar. Ein detaillierter Entwurf benötigt die Kartierung der Gesteinsqualität aus den Gesteinsstrecken während der Ausbrucharbeiten.

Uniaxial tension tests were conducted on specimens of eleven granitic rocks which came from eastern Japan, and included a granite, four granodiorites, four tonalites and two gabbros. The axial and transversal deformability of these rocks was determined based on strain measurements using wire strain gauges. The experimental test results revealed that deformational properties of the rocks investigated varied depending on their petrographic features. However, the axial strain and the lateral strain characteristics showed a similar trend for all the rocks, i.e. the stress-strain curves were non-linear throughout the whole stress range from the initial point of loading to the point of ultimate failure. Moreover, the tangent Young's modulus and the ratio of the lateral strain to the axial strain decreased monotonously with the increasing of the axial stress. Still, the deformational properties were different for individual rocks in a quantitative sense. In particular, the difference in the lateral strains among different rocks was more distinct than that in the axial strains. For example, the Poisson's ratio at a stress level equal to 50% of the ultimate strength of a granodiorite was very low, close to zero. Furthermore, the Poisson's ratio of a tonalite was lower than that of a granodiorite, and assumed a negative value. This effect occurred because the lateral strain became positive as it changed from contraction at the initial stage of loading to extension at higher stress levels. There is no ready explanation for this phenomenon; it is believed, however, that it occurs due to microcracks pre-existing in rock materials and/or weak bonds between the adjacent mineral grains. Les essais de traction directe ont été conduits sur les échantillons de onze roches granitiques provenant de la région Est du Japon: un granit, quatre granodiorites, quatre tonalites et deux gabbros. Déformabilité axiale et transversale de ces roches s’était déterminée en utilisant des jauges extensométriques à fil. Les résultats obtenus à partir des essais montrent que la déformabilité des roches examinées varie selon leurs propriétés pétrographiques. Cependant, à partir des essais, une tendance semblable était observée dans les paramètres de la déformation axiale et la déformation latérale de toutes les roches; c'est-à-dire chaque courbe de contrainte-déformation était non-linéaire dans tout l'intervalle de contraintes à partir de l’état initial jusqu’à l’état d’une rupture finale au cours du chargement. De plus, le module tangent de Young et le rapport de la déformation latérale sur la déformation axiale a diminué de manière monotone avec l'augmentation de la contrainte axiale. Cependant, les différences quantitatives de propriétés de déformation sous traction étaient observées entre des roches individuelles. Particulièrement, la différence de déformations latérales était plus notable que celle-là de déformations axiales entre des roches différentes. Par exemple, le coéfficient de Poisson à un niveau de contrainte égal à 50 % de la résistance d'un granodiorite était très bas, près du zéro. En outre, le coéfficient de Poisson de la tonalite était inférieur que celui du granodiorite et a assumé une valeur négative. Cet effet est apporté parce que la déformation latérale est devenue positive en passant de la contraction dans l'étape de chargement initiale à l'extension sous les contraines plus hautes. Il n'y a aucune explication prête de ce phénomène; on prétend, cependant, qu'il est induit par des microfissures préexistantes dans des matériaux rocheux et/ou des joints faibles entre les grains minéraux adjacents. Die axiale und transversale Verformbarkeit von diesen Gesteinen wurde durch Verformungsmessungen mit Drahtdehnungsmessstreifen geklaert. Die experimentellen Versuchsergebnisse offenbarten, dass Verformbarkeitseigenschaften des untersuchten Gesteins in Abhaengigkeit von ihren petrographischen Eigenschaften variierten. Jedoch zeigten die axialen und die lateralen Spannungsdehnungslinien eine aehnliche Tendenz bei allen Gesteinen, d.h. die Verformungskurven waren nicht linear im ganzen Bereich vom Ausgangspunkt des Belastens bis zum Punkt des entgueltigen Bruchs. Ausserdem verringerten sich das tangentiale Elastizitaetsmodul und das Verhaeltnis der lateralen Verformung zur axialen Verformung monoton mit der Erhoehung der axialen Spannung. Dennoch waren die Verformbarkeitseigenschaften der einzelnen Gesteine in der quantitativen Wahrnehmung unterschiedlich. Insbesondere war der Unterschied bezueglich der lateralen Verformungen zwischen verschiedenen Gesteinen eindeutiger, als der in den axialen Verformungen. Z.B. war die Querkontraktionszahl auf einem Spannungsniveau, das 50% der Zugfestigkeit eines Granodiorits entspricht, sehr niedrig und nah an Null. Ausserdem war die Querkontraktionszahl eines Tonalits negativ und deshalb niedriger als die eines Granodiorits. Dieser Effekt trat auf, weil die laterale Verformung, als sie sich von der Kontraktion am Ausgangsstadium des Belastens bis hin zur Ausdehnung auf den hoeheren Spannungsniveaus aenderte, positiv wurde. Es gibt keine fertige Erklaerung fuer dieses Phaenomen; es wird jedoch angenommen, dass es wegen der Mikrorisse auftritt, die vorher im Gesteinsmaterial und/oder in den schwachen Bindungen zwischen den angrenzenden Mineralkoernern existieren.
