The kinetics of adsorption of gold di-cyanide onto activated carbon has been investigated extensively over the past two decades. These studies have demonstrated that both film and intra-particle mass transfer affect the kinetics. The dominant mechanism of intra-particle mass transfer has not yet been identified. In the work described, surface diffusion and pore diffusion are considered as possible rate-determining mechanisms of intra-particle mass transfer. Mathematical models are described that incorporate film mass transfer and the respective intra-particle mass transfer mechanism with equilibrium described by a Freundlich isotherm. Rate constants of film mass transfer and pore or surface diffusivities were estimated by the fitting of the respective models to experimental carbon adsorption data. The estimated pore diffusivities, after they had been corrected for the porosity and tortuosity of the carbon, were found in most instances to be higher than the molecular diffusivity of dilute gold di-cyanide in aqueous solution. This situation is not physically viable. The surface diffusion mechanism acting in parallel with the pore-diffusion mechanism is thus responsible for the intra-particle transportation of most of the gold.

The maximum oxygen intakes of samples of about 30 Bantu, weighing less than 50 kg from different tribal groups (Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho and Shangaan) were measured on a treadmill. The mean maximum oxygen intake of the 164 men was 2,12 litresjmin and only 18 men (11 per cent of the sample) had maximum oxygen intakes of 2,5 litres/min or above (the minimum requirement for such tasks as shovelling rocks and tramming it). The samples of the different tribes differ in age, but when the age effect is taken into account then there were no significant differences between tribes in maximum oxygen intakes. An incidental finding was that both age and body weight correlated significantly with the maximum oxygen intakes of these underweight subjects. Not one of the subjects who weighed less than 45 kg or who was older than 40 years had maximum oxygen intakes high enough to permit their being able to do strenuous work underground. It is clear therefore that Bantu who weigh less than 45 kg or are older than 40 years should not be employed on such strenuous tasks as shovelling rock and tramming it.

The refractoriness of the gold in many of the pyritic ores from the eastern Transvaal is due mainly to the association between the gold and the sulphides, but it can be due to the presence of graphltlc carbonaceous material, which complicates the recovery of the gold by virtue of its adsorption activity. In an examination of the roasting characteristics of three flotation concentrates from the Barberton area, It was found that the gold in the concentrates occurred mostly in two forms: in very fine gold particles distributed within the arsenopyrite, and in a slightly coarser form loosely associated with the pyrite. Direct cyanidation of the concentrates gave gold extractions of from 16 to 30 per cent. After the concentrates had been roasted at temperatures of 650 to 700°C for 20 minutes with rabbling, the extractions varied from 86 to over 90 per cent. Examination of the residues after cyanidation indicated that gold was present in the porous calcines or in the calcined sulphide product. This observation, together with porosity measurements, suggests that physical encapsulation of the gold particles is the main reason for the refractory behaviour of the gold in the calcines.

Models of cone crushers and vibrating screens are described. These models have been constructed from actual plant data using a systematic model-building technique. Included in this technique is regression analysis using multi-dimensional spline functions. The models have been used too simulate complete crushing plants and hence to design and evaluate a control system for crushing plants.

A. H. Mokken: I am pleased to have been given this opportunity to make a contribution to Dr Muller's paper tonight. The reason for this is that, at one stage in our careers, we were associates in the same undertaking. Dr Muller, then fresh from University, with a degree in pure science, had just stepped onto the first rung of the ladder, which, it was then thought, would lead him to a career in gold extractive metallurgy. However, endowed with an enquiring mind and conscious of a lack of fundamental training in general metallurgy and engineering, he felt a need for further academic study. To meet this need and, more importantly, to meet the necessary finances, he found his opportunity in steel. Armed with a bursary, he bade farewell to gold and proceeded overseas, to the University of Sheffield, to train as a steel metallurgist. The outcome of these academic efforts, which were followed by assignments in the steel industry and a further period at Sheffield, is the man we have listened to tonight-a highly qualified metallurgist who has displayed a sound knowledge of his subject. In choosing Sheffield, Dr Muller became associated with a steelmaking centre of world renown, a centre usually credited with the first systematic production of alloy steels, as far back as the 18th century. Since that time, great advances have been made in the production of alloy steels and this is especially so in the last decade or two, when major developments in civil, mechanical, electrical, aeronautical and nuclear engineering have been made possible by the development of steels with improved properties. In spite of spectacular advances in the technology of non-ferrous alloys, plastics and other materials of construction, steel has maintained its role as a pre-eminent material for engineering use. With the gradual accumulation of data on the properties of steels, and the use of thin film electron microscopy, to study the behaviour and characteristics of such phenomena as dislocations in metals and other microstructural features, the physical metallurgist appears to be approaching the stage of an exact understanding of such phenomena as strength, ductility and brittleness-a knowledge which could lead to close control of such properties and, therefore, to the attainment of the highest goals. An interesting example, illustrating the use of fundamental principles, based on physico-metallurgical research, is the development of the maraging steels developed by Bieber at the International Nickel Company. These steels have met the extreme technological requirements of the space age by providing the material for the cases of large rockets in which qualities, such as high tensile strength, toughness, workability and weldability are most important. Attractive as they might appear to be in considerations of savings of weight, cost of erection, transport of materials and foundations, the use of high strength steels has been accompanied by special problems such as brittle fracture, hydrogen embrittlement, notch-toughness and fatigue. It has been found that high strength steels, which performed acceptably in conventional tension tests, were found to undergo failure, in a brittle manner, in service. Hydrogen embrittlement has caused spectacular failures at a fraction of the normal ultimate tensile strength, and a lack of correlation between fatigue and tensile strengths has diminished the advantages to be obtained from the use of high strength steel in some applications. A new approach to the selection of materials for engineering design has resulted from a consideration of these phenomena in which strength, as such, is no longer as significant as it was previously. It is interesting to note that, when the Technical Programme Committee-Mining first decided on this particular topic for a colloquium, the proposed title was different in that it used the words 'rising price of gold'. The very fact that the title was reworded to use the words 'fluctuating gold price' highlights the problem that faces the South African gold-mining industry.

SYNOPSIS A method is described whereby finely ground glassy granulated blastfurnace slag mixed with small quantities of clay, whiting and quartz has been used for making ceramic tiles in the laboratory. The tiles were semi-dry pressed and devitrification as well as sintering occurred during firing. The properties of the resulting product compared favourably in many respects with ordinary ceramic flooring materials.
