Duplex stainless steels containing high levels of manganese and copper and lower-than-normal levels of nickel were produced and evaluated. The experimental alloys containing 3 per cent copper by mass could not be successfully hot-rolled. Alloys containing less than 2 per cent copper could be hot- and cold-rolled without difficulty. The wrought experimental alloys that contained copper were found to offer some advantages over the 2205- type duplex stainless steel in sulphuric acid at 52°C. Resistance to pitting attack was governed primarily by the chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen contents, and one of the experimental alloys was superior to the 2205-type alloy in the ferric chloride test. It is concluded that manganese is a useful substitute for nickel in duplex alloys, but that further work is required before the present alloys, or variations of them, could be commercially viable.

An existing 1 800 m long pipeline, which carried waste mica slurry from kaolin processing, is to be recommissioned. The mica solids throughput is to be substantially increased from 5.2 t/h up to a maximum of9.53 t/h, but with a typical throughput of around 7.5 t/h. Because of this throughput increase, it was unclear whether the existing 80 mm diameter pipe would be adequate. In addition, the pipe route is to be extended by 250 m to 2 050m, and its elevation at discharge to settling lagoons increased from 66.2 m to 80 m. The pipeline hydraulics of waste mica slurry were investigated for the 80 mm diameter pipe using the Saskatchewan Research Council?s (SRC) Two-Layer Flow Model, for the maximum mica solids throughput of 9.53t/h. The pipe operating velocity was compared with the predicted deposit velocity for several mica concentrations, ranging from 20% to 50% by weight. Estimates were made of the total differential pressure across the proposed2 050 m long pipeline, as well as the power imparted to the slurry by the pump, and the specific energy consumption (SEC). Two pipe diameters were assumed: 80 mm when no mica wall deposit is present, and 70 mm when there is a 5mm mica wall deposit. This parameter has a significant effect on the determination of the appropriate pipe operating conditions. For the pipe operating velocity to remain adequately above the deposit velocity (and therefore for the heterogeneous flow pattern to prevail in either horizontal or inclined pipe), it was concluded that if the newly commissioned pipeline contains no mica wall deposit, the pipe should initially be operated at a mica concentration of between 20% and 25% by weight, probably with a target mica concentration of about 23%. Platinoids in the Witwatersrand system C. A. Cousins. (visitor) Study of the composition, nature and mode of occurrence of platinoid minerals in the conglomerates of the Witwatersrand System leads to some interesting conclusions. Genetic evidence strongly favours a placer origin, while comparison with modern alluvial platinoids supports this view but also indicates that they are very mature alluvials. The compositional patterns and distribution of the platinoids in the Witwatersrand basin suggest the water was saline. Study of the mineralogy was greatly facilitated by the electron-probe.

The production processes are described, and the properties of the two types are examined and compared. Guidelines are given for the selection of the correct grade of ferrosilicon for any particular application.

SYNOPSIS The effect of conditioning energy on the flotation of gold, U308, and pyrite was investigated in the range 0,1 to 100 kWh per tonne of dry ore for various combinations of conditioning time and impeller speed in a cylindrical con¬ditioning tank. It was found that, when the conditioning energy was increased to between 5 and 10 kWh per tonne of dry ore, the total recovery and flotation rate of the valuable minerals (expressed as Klimpel parameters) increas¬ed substantially. The Klimpel parameters are dependent on conditioning energy, but are independent of condition¬ing time or impeller speed (at constant conditioning energy). The Klimpel parameters of the gangue are indepen¬dent of conditioning energy.

A variety of processing problems in the hydrometallurgical extraction of uranium in the U.S.A. are contrasted with those in South Africa. In U.S. plants, for example, problems are often encountered in the separation of vanadium, molybdenum, and uranium, and in the contamination of the circuit with organic acids. South African plants often experience problems with dissolved silica in the feed, clarification of feeds, and problems associated with synthetic polyelectrolytes. Individual situations are examined, along with the analytical techniques that assist in solving specific problems. Successful approaches that have been applied to mechanical and chemical problems in' uranium solvent-extraction plants are discussed.

A review of real-time particle size analysers A. L. HINDE,. B.Sc., A.R.C.S., D.I.C., Ph.D. The physical principles of different sizing techniques are critically examined in order to evaluate the suitability of the techniques for real-time particle size assessment. Examples of both successful and unsuccessful attempts at producing an acceptable real-time sizer are described in order to delineate the difficulties involved in making rapid and accurate size measurements. Only two of the examples described have proved to be suitable for on-line particle size monitoring, namely the "MintekjRSM Onstream Slurry Sizer" manufactured by Cartner Group, Ltd., and the "PSM System 100" made by Autometrics Co. Both these commercial systems are capable of assessing particle size with an accuracy comparable with that obtained by routine sieving and weighing. The "PSM System 100" has been used successfully for automatic control of grinding circuits. Economic benefits derived from this system, operating under rigorous plant conditions for several months, have proved that real-time size analysers are of significant value to the mining and metallurgical industry.

The flotation characteristics of two South African coals were investigated: one from the Dumacol Colliery in Natal, and the other from Landau Colliery in the WitbankCoal Field. Samples of fine coal (smaller than 1 mm)were studied, the Dumacol coal showing significantly better ash-liberation characteristics than the Landau coal. Neither coal was found to produce satisfactory flotation concentrates, except at very fine sizes. The poor flotation performance can be ascribed to the non-selective flotation of unliberated particles that may contain considerable quantities of ash. Flotation recoveries were greatest for particles between 100 and 200 µ m, and fell of rapidly as the size increased above 200 µ m. Very fine particles were found to float adequately, and acceptable concentrates can be made at comparatively high yields from materials smaller than 75 µ m. The flotation of ultrafine coal was demonstrated successfully in a continuous pilot plant. This result opens the way to a potentially viable industrial process for the beneficiation of ultrafines from the Witbank No. 2 seam, which for decades has been regarded as non-floatable.

S. J. Venning (Member): The authors should be congratulated on producing such concise data from the plethora of experimental report results. Their observations on the cost of liners calls for some comment however, as the really unique feature about liners in South Africa is that they can be obtained so cheaply. Attention has been focussed on the 1961 cost of white iron at R50 per ton for chill cast block liners while manganese steel liners are reported as costing as much as R250 per ton. The former are however, a relatively heavy, simple casting with a low labour content and reasonably high percentage productivity, made from metal melted in a cupola. The capital investment to produce this type of casting is low compared with that required to produce manganese or other alloy steels. The chill cast liner block is always a production item and is cast in a permanent mould. Almost all manganese mill liners, except perhaps small aperture screens, are sold for considerably less than the R250 per ton quoted by the authors. Where a price of this nature is asked it would be because the design of the casting demanded is complicated or leaves little metal to carry the labour and other costs of production. As reference has also been made in the paper to liner costs in America, prices for similar types of liners obtained during a visit to Canada and the U.S.A. in 1961, could be of interest: Material Price per Location short ton Ni-hard R250 Elliot Lake Body liners block type Ni-Hard R300-310 FAS New York Mn Steel R280-290 FAS New York Screens (grids) slotted Cr.Mo. Steel R600 FAS New York hole Ni-Hard R320 Elliot Lake At this time the price of comparable manganese steel block type liners on the Witwatersrand was between R145/R155 per short ton. White iron in Canada was then quoted at about R150 per ton, but as Ni-Hard gave a life of at least two to twoand-a-half times that of white iron, it was a much more attractive proposition particularly when relining and down time costs were taken into consideration. There is little doubt that most foundries would welcome clear and complete specifications of the customers requirements and systematic checks to ensure that these specifications are being met. B.S.S. or other accepted standards should form the basis of these, and periodic inspections should be undertaken to ensure that only those foundries capable of complying should be included as suppliers. The authors have referred to new designs, but can the industry really call the grid and plate new when the patents were taken out during the second world war and the sawtooth block has been used for at least 35 years. Unfortunately, far too little thought and consideration are normally given to the ultimate mill liner design while the mills themselves are on the drawing boards. In this work we have reviewed methods to classify corrosivity of ground waters. Weight loss and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) corrosion tests have been done for rebar and steel strand. No clear indication of SCC was found. The application of tensile stress to 85 % of yield strength increased general corrosion rate significantly in very corrosive waters. The effect of corrosion protection on the axial behavior of steel strands was determined by double pipe axial tests with different embedment lengths. The results showed a significant difference on behavior between epoxy-coated steel strands, galvanized steel strands and plain steel strand. Dans la présente étude, nous avons passé en revue des méthodes permettant de classifier la corrosivité des eaux souterraines. Des tests portant sur les pertes de poids et sur la corrosion FCC (la fissuration par corrosion sous contrainte) ont été effectués pour les barres d’armature et les torons. Aucune indication nette de FCC n’a été constatée. L’application d’une contrainte de traction allant jusqu’à 85 % de la limite d’élasticité a accru de manière significative la vitesse générale de corrosion dans les eaux très corrosives. L’effet de la protection contre la corrosion sur le comportement axial des torons en acier a été déterminé au moyen de tests axiaux à double tube avec des longueurs d’enrobage différentes. Les résultats ont mis en évidence une différence significative quant au comportement entre les torons en acier à revêtement époxy, les torons en acier galvanisés et les torons en acier standard. In dieser Arbeit haben wir Methoden geprüft, die korrosive Wirkung des Grundwassers einstufen. Gewichtsverlust- und SCC-Korrosionstests wurden für Stahlstäbe und Drahtlitzen durchgeführt. Es wurden keine sicheren Hinweise auf Spannungsrisskorrosionsbrüche gefunden. Bei Anwendung einer Dehnbelastung von 85 % der Streckspannung bzw.Ergebnisstärke stieg die allgemeine Korrosionsrate in stark korrosivem Wasser deutlich an. Die Wirkung des Korrosionschutzes bei axialem Verhalten von Stahldrahtlitzen wurde durch axiale Tests an Doppelleitungen unterschiedlicher Versenkungslänge determiniert. Die Ergebnisse zeigten im direkten Vergleich von epoxidbeschichteten, galvanisierten und normalen Stahldrahtlitzen beachtliche Unterschiede im Verhalten auf.

In recent years, rapid depletion of the higher grade reserves, allied to decreases in paylimits, has led to the exploitation of secondary, erratically mineralized placer horizons on various marginal and low grade gold mines. On Blyvooruitzicht Mine, the rich Carbon Leader Reef has limited reserves, necessitating exploration of the lower grade Middelvlei Reef. This placer has always presented evaluation and exploration problems, to such an extent that it was, at one stage, considered uneconomic. Despite an extensive underground drilling programme no ore reserve targets of reasonable size were apparent. However, when a certain degree of parallelism between sedimentological trends in the Middelvlei Reef and the underlying Carbon Leader was recognized, a meaningful exploration model could be developed. Firstly, all historical sampling records for the Carbon Leader were entered into a computerized system; the database comprised in excess of 340 000 data points. Variables captured consisted of gold value, uranium value, con- glomerate thickness and total reef thickness. The raw data were then averaged into blocks, and plots of different variables were computer-generated for further analysis. This enabled the Carbon Leader to be modelled sedimentologically and, thereby, exploration targets for the Middelvlei Reef were generated, based on the Carbon Leader facies trends. Geostatistical analysis of sampling data in exposed areas of the Middelvlei Reef underground has confirmed the sedimentological breakdown of the placer into distinct facies areas. A facies model relating value distribution patterns to depositional trends, both for the Carbon Leader and the Middelvlei Reef, has thus been incorporated into a mine planning strategy.
