Anglo Platinum's Polokwane Smelter is situated outside Polokwane, in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Wet concentrate is received from various concentrators along the Eastern Bushveld Complex. Approximately 60% of the total concentrate received is from UG2 Reef, and 40% is from Merensky Reef. The concentrate is dried in two flash dryers, and smelted in a single 168 MVA furnace. A PGM-rich nickel-copper matte is cast, crushed and transported to Rustenburg for converting. The plant was commissioned in March 2003. The wet concentrate, containing 12-18% moisture, is weighed, sampled by one of two auger samplers, and off-loaded into a concentrate shed, either directly through a grizzly into a hopper, or onto the floor. From the shed the concentrate is conveyed to 12 concrete silos. Each of the two identical flash dryers can be fed from six silos. From the flash dryers concentrate is transported pneumatically to a 3 000-ton dry concentrate storage silo. The flash dryers are rated at a nominal 66 tph of dry concentrate at 14% moisture, while the furnace can smelt 90 tph of dry concentrate. Therefore both flash dryers are required to operate when the furnace runs at design throughput. Each flash dryer consists of a hot gas generator (HGG), a disintegrator and drying column, and a section for gas/solids separation. In the HGG, gas heated up to 700° C is produced from the combustion of coal peas in a fluidized sand bed. The hot gas and wet concentrate are introduced to the disintegrator at the bottom of the drying column. The disintegrator breaks up any lumps of concentrate, and throws the concentrate up into the drying column, where it travels co-currently with the hot gas. A fan draws the hot gas from the drying column and through the gas/solids separation section, which consists of three primary cyclones, a multiclone and a high-temperature bag house. The dry concentrate reports to a 450-ton dry concentrate storage bin. A portion of dry concentrate is recycled to the wet concentrate feed in a paddle mixer, so that concentrate that is too wet does not enter the disintegrator. The drying column outlet temperature is controlled at 120° C. Coal is received by road, screened for oversize and conveyed to a 400-ton concrete silo. From here it is pneumatically conveyed to a small feed bin at each of the HGG' s. The optimization work consists of process control improvements relating to the HGG outlet temperature, to control the drying column temperature during the ramp-up of the HGG outlet temperature and bag filters. Furthermore a heat balance is used to evaluate options to increase the instantaneous drying capacity of the existing equipment. The coal consumption derived from the heat balance is compared with the actual coal consumption. The purpose of the optimization work is to achieve an operating schedule for the flash dryers such that they operate simultaneously for as short time as possible. Most of the time one flash dryer should operate, allowing maintenance to be done on the other flash dryer, while drawing down the dry concentrate stock. Discussion Dr R. E. Robinson (Fellow): The author must be congratulated on a very meticulous and self-contained piece of work. It is indeed a pleasure to read a paper that is so clearly and systematically laid out, and where the conclusions and the testwork conducted have been so clearly described. The paper is complete in itself, which makes it very difficult for someone who is not intimately involved in the whole Torco project to make any comments on its content. However, two points that, strictly speaking, fall outside the scope of the paper are of considerable interest. The first relates to the particle size of the material treated. In the paper, the testwork is confined to one standard particle size (minus 60 plus 100 mesh). The essential feature of the paper is to indicate that the rate-controlling reaction in the whole segregation process is the rate of reaction of the ore particles with the reducing agent and the hydrogen chloride. One wonders, therefore, to what extent this relatively slow rate of reaction is affected by the particle size of the ore itself. One imagines that the reaction must take place by contact of the hydrogen chloride with the surface of the mineral particles, and it is reasonable to suspect that the rate of diffusion of the copper ions to the surface is a relatively slow process and is thus the limiting factor in this particular rate of reaction. It is possible, for example, that the improvement obtained, when the ore is subjected to reducing conditions before the chlorination, is due to a breakdown in the crystal structure of the original particle. This breakdown is brought about by the reduction and by the consequent increase in surface area available for reaction with hydrogen chloride. Can the author indicate whether any work has been done along these lines, and whether it has been established that the reaction depends on the surface area available? The second point relates to the application of this kinetic study to the actual operation of a Torco reactor. It was once planned to feed the sodium chloride, together with the reducing agent, into the top of the segregation chamber. In the paper, the author mentions that it has now been established that the segregation chamber behaves, to all intents and purposes, as a fluidized bed, and that there is, therefore, a rapid evolution of gas in the lower regions of the chamber, which, it is imagined, displaces the gas phase rapidly. Since the reaction between sodium chloride, water vapour, and the aluminium silicates in the ore is extremely rapid, one wonders how much of the hydrogen chloride produced is removed from the reaction zone before it has had time to react with the copper minerals. The extremely low consumption of sodium chloride (which is a vital feature of the Torco process) must depend on an extremely rapid circulation of the hydrogen chloride gas to all the ore particles in the segregation chamber. One wonders, therefore, if a system for the introduction of the sodium chloride into the bottom regions of the chamber might not result in even greater efficiency in the utilization of sodium chloride. ProC D. D. Howat (Fellow): All of us who have been concerned with the study of chemical reactions at high temperatures are keenly interested in kinetics and are well aware that this is not an easy study experimentally. Dr. Brittan is to be congratulated on the development of neat experimental methods and for his full discussion of the results obtained. Although the segregation process for the extraction of copper from oxide and silicate ores has been known for almost fifty years, the fundamental chemical and physical changes involved have been little understood and the fundamental data are very scanty. The work now in progress at A.A.R.L., together with that sponsored by the Anglo American Corporation in other research institutions throughout the world, is bound to produce new fundamental data and a much more complete understanding of this rather fascinating process. It is already apparent that some of the old and well-worn chemical reactions that were postulated to occur, just cannot take place in the way which was formerly accepted. Dr Brittan's work, carefully conducted and thoroughly analyzed as it has been, still leaves us with one great outstanding problem. The thermodynamic data and the possible reactions set out in Table I (page 281) of his paper leave us asking, in complete despair, how can copper be converted into a volatile chloride in the presence of HCl, CO and carbon at temperatures about 800°C? The thermodynamics all combine to show that copper should be reduced to metal as the first step in the process. This brings us right up against the second problem. If copper were reduced to the metal how would HCI convert it to the volatile chloride? On top of these problems is the unknown reason for the very high speed of reaction between CO, HCI and the ground copper ore. Still further into the region of the unknown is the reaction by which gaseous hydrochloric acid is produced in the actual process. Perhaps Dr Brittan is feeling grateful that he doesn't have to try to explain this reaction-at this stage of the research programme at least. The results very clearly show that both CO and HCl gas are essential for rapid production of the volatile copper chloride. Dr Brittan states that 18 minutes were required to attain 83 per cent extraction with HCl gas alone and this was reduced to 4 minutes when CO was

A 10-year program to integrate crushing and screening models into daily flowsheet design practice has proven successful. A Circuit Analysis Program (CAP) is used worldwide to design and evaluate new and existing crushing flowsheets. To gain user acceptance of CAP and maximize effectiveness, model development, simulation flexibility, ease of use, and developing international access are key issues. These issues have been resolved effectively resulting in flowsheet simulations to assist in justifying increased capital investment. CAP is presently utilized in Canada, United States, and South Africa with intentions to expand to Europe and Asia.

The planned extraction of the No. 1 shaft pillar at Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mine highlighted a number of potential problems. In spite of the relative shallowness, careful thought had to be given to stope phasing owing to the detrimental effect of the anticipated geology and the fact that uninterrupted hoisting was necessary. Extensive use was made of computer modellig to design the stope phasing, determine the influence of regional support and to predict the direction and magnitude of displacements in the shaft. The paper describes the success of this design approach, and measured displacements in the stoping horizon and shaft barrel are compared to those obtained from the original computer model

SYNOPSIS Changes in the national productivity (gross national product per head of the population) have been assessed in order to derive a target figure for the required annual increase. The conclusion reached IS compared with the targets of the economic development programme of the Republic. Productivity and management structure in the gold mining industry is then analyzed together with investment in plant, machinery and equipment for rock handling purposes. The conclusion is drawn that productivity improvement does not appear to have accorded with the massive expenditures in plant and equipment, and in augmented management. The productivity of the manufacturing and construction sectors of the economy has been examined. The principal difficulty is that the main avenue of approach is the value of product divided by the total labour force. This introduces inflationary questions, and the use of a suitable deflator becomes of prime importance. Severa1 different methods of assessing the productivity improvement in the industrial sector have been used with what is regarded as a comparatively high degree of compatibility. Improvements in productivity in the manufacturing industry up to 1966 appear, from the information available, to have substantially exceeded comparable figures for the mining industry. There is however evidence that thereafter productivity of the manufacturing industry has not maintained this satisfactory rate of increase. If the economy is to achieve the planned rate of expansion, there is no doubt that greater attention to this aspect will be required in the future than has been accorded to it in the past.

In the previous chapters we did not concern ourselves with the fact that the geostatistical properties of the regionalized variable x (z) are affected by the size of the support w. Ideally, when analysing an ore body O, we would like to determine the properties of point values in O, i.e. the properties of a regionalized variable with an infinitely small support, say w°. In practice, point values are never known. To measure the value of x at a point z we must take a sample of size w centred at z. For example, if we are interested in the grade at point z, w will be the volume of the sample 'centred in z; if we are interested in the metal accumulation at point z, w will be the area of the cross-section of the sample centred in z. We say that the measured property is a regularized variable, and so the semivariogram (or covariogram) calculated from the values obtained is also regularized. In the majority of the mining problems which can be solved by geostatistical methods, we are interested in the properties of blocks of ore and of samples with a finite non-point support. It will be shown in the following chapters that these problems can be solved by calculating the average value of the point sernivariogram in volumes or areas of finite dimension, or between such volumes or areas. These calculations would be simple if we knew the point semivariogram. This means that the point semivariogram has to be estimated from the observed regularized semivariogram(s).

The problem of providing adequate thrust to manually operated rockdrills operating at air pressures of 70 lb/in2g to 80 lb/in2g with the aid of an air-leg is analyzed. It is shown that adequate thrust is provided by an air-leg or the stiff-leg if it is inclined at an angle to the floor of about 25°. However, this requires that the leg react against some support or protuberance, as the friction force between the leg and the floor is inadequate to contain the thrust. Conclusions summarizing optimum thrusts, blow frequencies, penetration rates, drill steel life and bit wear are presented.

The above paper gives a fair amount of information and is a useful addition to the literature on a subject of growing importance. I believe that more experimental results could have been given, together with more details of the modifications made to the plant that enabled it to operate with the success mentioned in the paper. One important omission is a definition of the word fines. As pointed out elsewhere!, this word is used very loosely.

An account is given of the production of three types of experimental high-chromium duplex stainless steel. The alloys had chromium contents of 22, 29, and 35 per cent. The partitioning of the main alloying elements between the austenite and ferite phases was determined, and the effect of the alloying elements chromium, nickel, and molybdenum on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the duplex stainless steels is summarized. The phase compositions of the different duplex stainless steels were measured by different techniques, and the values obtained were correlated. The cracking occasionally observed during the thermo mechanical processing of these alloys was studied, and is explained as being the result of known embritlement processes.

This study Investigates transient closure piles of tabular excavations. Measured closure profiles in stopes indicate that time-dependent acts f the rockmass can be very prominent but such effects have been largely neglected in past analyses and modelling. This was due to a poor understanding of the time-dependent mechanisms controlling closure rates This paper investigates the feas-ibility of representing the rockmass as a visco-elastic medium. Currently, no analytical solution for the viscoelastic convergence of a tabular stope is available in the literature. Therefore, the author derived a solution using the correspondence principle and a known elastic solution. It is assumed that the rockmass behaves elastically in hydrostatic compression and as a Kelvin substance in distortion A parametric study is Included to aid in the calibration of the model parameters, together with a discussion on the correct calibration of these parameters from experimental data.

The minerals industry needs the support of al sections of the population if it is going to be able to supply the new materials required for future development. It will achieve this support only if its image is good. Perceived images of the minerals industry are examined in respect of history, technology, environment, safety, education, and economics. Concern is expressed about the low technological image of the industry and the declining number of students enrolling in minerals-related disciplines. It is concluded that it is the professionals, through institutes like The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, who must take the lead in improving the image of the minerals industry. The Presidential Address gives data to support this thesis; data that, is hoped, can be used in efforts to educate people about the minerals industry.

Premier Mine (a part of De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd) which is situated 38 km to the east of Pretoria, has the largest known diamond pipe in South Africa. The mine started operations in1903. The Premier Mine kimberlite pipe is unique in that it is intersected by a 75 m thick gabbro sill at a depth of 400 m below surface. The current mining method used is mechanized panel retreat caving, which has been successfully used to extract ore from the different mining blocks. All caving at Premier Mine is below the sill and failure to exercise good draw control could cause the early ingress of gabbro waste. Draw control at Premier Mine is crucial as it aids in preventing conditions of isolated draw, which results in the early ingress of waste, compaction of the kimberlite and the loss of ore reserves. To assist, an underground vehicle monitoring and control (VMAC) system was installed to enable the effective management of the draw control function. The system has evolved graduallyin collaboration with a local developer. The data accumulated is used to decide the most effectivedraw point loading pattern in order to achieve sound draw control principles. This is achieved as each load can be related back to the draw point of origin. The VMAC data recorded also relates back to specific load-haul-dumps (LHDs), tunnels, ore passes, as well as indications of dates, times and payloads recorded. An interface exists between the VMAC and a draw control linear program. Premier Mine’s VMAC system is not a ‘dispatch’ system but rather a draw control system that caters for Premier Mine’s specific block cave requirements. Premier Mine has realized that successful automation is not dependent on technology alone but rather on the successful implementation thereof.

Discussion I. R. M. Cheston (Visitor): I should like to congratulate the authors on this interesting paper which graphically illustrates the overall effects of the gradual developments in diamond concentrating processes which have taken place over the past few years. These final stages of diamond concentration represent only a minor factor in the cost of diamond production but because of the shortage of highly trained people for this work, any easing of the burden on the sorting staff has an importance far beyond the immediate economic sphere. The search for the solution of problems posed by the economic and social conditions of industry is never-ending. The Diamond Research Laboratory is, even now, carrying out further work to improve still more the operation of general diamond recovery processes as described in the paper. Before looking at some of the latest developments in this field of final recovery, there are a few points arising from the paper on which I would like to comment. On page 321, reference is made to the X-ray sorters originally developed by the DRL. The paper gives a figure of 100 per cent recovery of diamonds from +7 mesh concentrates in two passes through the prototype machine. Not wishing to claim miraculous powers for our group, I would prefer to see this given as virtually 100 per cent recovery of all fluorescing diamonds. Firstly however much care is taken, there is bound to be an occasional operating loss. In the test work, 100 per cent recovery was made on many occasions but this was not always so. Secondly, although most diamonds fluoresce strongly under X-rays, some diamonds only fluoresce weakly. Type IIB diamonds, in fact hardly fluoresce at all, but the incidence of this special type of diamond is very low in most deposits. However, in operating the commercial X-ray machines, there is a certain background level of reflected radiation from other feed particles. Unless the diamond fluorescence is several times greater than this, it is not possible to achieve sufficient sensitivity in ejection. A certain small but variable proportion of diamonds from each deposit is always found to fluoresce too weakly to be recovered by the X-ray machine. Tests have shown, that for the De Beers mines, this proportion is considerably less than I per cent. These diamonds are nearly all dark brown or black in colour and therefore of low value. The degree of fluorescence does not, however, depend entirely on the colour or quality of the diamond and some of the brightest fluorescence comes from the lowest quality of boart diamonds. Investigations into the property of the diamond which causes this low fluorescence are being carried out. On page 322 it is suggested that zircon fluoresces in the same colour spectrum as the diamond. This is not quite accurate. The total light given out by zircon under X-rays is of the same order as that of diamond. However the zircon radiation has a much wider spectrum band than the diamond fluorescence. Reference is also made on page 322 to the effect of selective milling in small laboratory mills on diamonds. Perfect diamonds are very hard and very strong and are extremely difficult to break. Imperfect diamonds, which form the majority of diamonds recovered from most deposits, although hard, can be very brittle. Even under slight impact some of these diamonds may shatter to powder. Milling conditions must therefore be extremely closely controlled to minimize breakage, and even so, some breakage will always occur. As suggested in the paper, the necessary conditions are: the use of small balls, slow speed mills and very limited water addition. Tests elsewhere have suggested that the water content of the pulp in such a mill must be less than 25 per cent by weight of pulp to prevent diamond breakage reaching significant proportions. The skin flotation techniques described on page 323 operate on a very small scale. It is of interest to note that in West Africa a large-scale continuous skin flotation machine is used to recover the fine diamonds. In this operation the feed is dried and, after standing, is mixed with water and fed in a single layer onto a woven phosphor-bronze conveyor belt. This belt runs at a shallow angle into a water bath and as the particles are carried through the air-water-interface, the diamonds float off and over a weir into a collecting box. The bulk of the particles, being wettable, sink to the bottom of the tank and are continuously removed. If treated without prior drying, the diamond recovery is poor. If material is treated immediately after drying, a lot of the gangue particles also float. During standing, in the hot and humid atmosphere of West Africa, it is found that the gangue particles recover their wettability much faster than the diamond particles. Optimum selectivity is obtained after standing for approximately 24 hours. At the DRL we have been experimenting with optical filters to differentiate between the fluorescence of diamonds and zircon. Owing to the helical construction of the wires and strands in a triangular-strand rope, a torque is generated when the rope is restrained and tensioned. When a rope is suspended vertically, there is a load differential along its length due to the self weight of the rope. This load differential gives rise to an initial torque differential m the rope. Since the rope is constrained only at the conveyance and sheave wheel, the torque along its length must be constant ID order to maintain equilibrium, a variation in lay length occurs so that the lay length at the conveyance end decreases, and the lay length at the sheave end increases, from the manufactured state. The tension-torsion testing of steel-wire ropes is discussed, and it is shown how the results of the tests can be used to predict static in-shaft torsional behaviour. The expected changes in strand lay length in very deep shafts (deeper than 2500 m) are calculated, and the associated problems and of severe changes m lay length on rope endurance and safety are discussed. Examples of current in-service rope distortions such as kinks and corkscrews are shown.

The technique of backfilling in the gold mining industry is dependent on the dewatering of slurry to form a solid support system. In many cases flocculants are added to the slurry to increase the rate of dewatering. To ensure that a stable support is obtained it is important that the chemistry, application and limitations of these flocculant additives are understood. Flocculant additives have to be added at a point where minimum shear will occur. (Shear occurs when a flocculant is exposed to excess energy resulting in breakdown, of the floc.) To ensure that optimum results are obtained it is important that personnel involved are trained to use the flocculant additives and dosing equipment correctly.

The importance of the minerals industry in the economy of the country is discussed, and the tremendous changes that have taken place over the past two decades, including the widespread application of computers and the use of mechanization, are outlined. A discussion of the future of the minerals industry points out that, with the rise in the price of gold, the life of the gold-mining industry can be expected to extend beyond that previously predicted, and that the demand for uranium, which has been depressed, is uncertain. As a result of the oil crisis, the demand for coal has increased and large expansion programmes are planned. These involve coal exports and the use of coal for the generation of electric power, for the production of liquid fuels, and for the smelting of metals. Technical challenges face engineers in every avenue of the minerals industry: in deep gold mines, underground coal mines, strip coal mines, and open-pit mines. Studies indicate that only one-third of the demand for trained mining and metallurgical engineers is being met and that the position is worsening. However, there are indications that the industry is succeeding in attracting more engineering students, and the supply is expected to improve. These efforts should be co-ordinated, expanded, and intensified. There is a need to ensure that sufficient teaching staff of the right calibre and experience are attracted to universities and technikons. The first degree course is comprehensive and basic, and specialization through post-graduate study should be encouraged. The influence of national service on the education and training of engineers is discussed.

The mathematical models of semivariograms can be classified according to whether or not they correspond to situations where the second order stationarity conditions are satisfied (§ 3.3.4). If second order stationarity exists, the a priori variance s2 of x (z) also exists and is finite. For large distances h such that x (z) and x (z + h) are not correlated, the semi- variogram ? (h) will reach a value equal to s2 [this is a consequence of (3.27) above]. This limiting value is called the sill C of the semivariogram, and the distance at which ? (h) reaches the sill is called the range. The range of the semi- variogram obtained from a given type of sample corresponds to the distance of influence of these samples. If only the intrinsic hypothesis is satisfied, the sample variance is an increasing function of the size of the area or volume in which the samples are located, and the semivariogram ? (h) will be a continuously increasing function of h. Remark: It will be shown in Chapter 7 that the variance s2 of x (z) in the ore body O is equal to the average value of ? (h) in O. If ? (h) is a non-decreasing function with sill C, the average value of ? (h) in O will be less than C. s2 and C will be equal only if for some values of h in O, ? (h) exceeds C. In practice, if the range of the semivariogram is small with respect to the dimensions of the ore body, the difference between C and s2 will be negligible.
