A mineralogical study was conducted on the feed (3.51 g/t Au and ~90 g/t Ag) and four leach residue samples (assaying 0.09 to 0.19 g/t Au and 30.0 to 61.5 g/t Ag) from the Pinos Altos silver-gold deposit in Mexico to determine the cause for gold and silver losses. A comprehensive mineralogical and analytical approach including fire assay, gravity pre-concentration, ore microscopy, mineral liberation analyser (MLA) and electron microprobe was used for the current study. Results showed that gold and silver lost in the leach residues occurred mainly as inclusions in quartz and silicates (accounting for over 80% for Au and 92% for Ag of the head assays, respectively), with a minor amount in iron oxide and other minerals. The amount of liberated gold and silver is negligible. Results also showed that gold and silver particles in leach residues are mainly ranged from 1 µm to 5 µm in size, which implies that ultrafine grinding is required to improve the recoveries of these two metals. Changes in flotation performance have been correlated to changes in froth structure, velocity and stability. Literature has shown that when the aeration rate is varied for a specific float cell, the recovery of the valuable mineral reaches a peak which also coincides with a peak in the air recovery – a measure of froth stability. Peak air recovery optimisation methodology is a way to use direct readings of physical phenomena by froth cameras to optimise the metallurgical performance of a flotation plant. The aim of this paper is to show the transient nature of the peak air recovery value and the variety of conditions required to attain the peak air recovery on an industrial flotation plant with tight base-layer control of the feed and internal conditions. Industrial site tests that were conducted under controlled conditions showed different peak values at significantly different corresponding aeration rates during normal operation. The measured peak air recovery points corresponded to maximum PGM recovery during normal flotation, as expected. This dynamic nature of the peak air recovery point conditions has not previously been discussed in literature and indicates the need for online measuring equipment and informs the design of process control algorithms required to exploit the phenomenon for optimisation. The development of short- and medium-term mine production schedules in isolation from each other has meant that only a local optimum can be achieved when each scheduling phase is carried out. The globally optimal solution, however, can be achieved when integrating scheduling phases and accounting for the interaction between short-term and medium-term activities simultaneously. This paper addresses the task of integrating short- and medium-term production plans by combining the short-term objective of minimizing deviation from targeted mill feed grade with the medium-term objective of maximizing net present value (NPV) into a single mathematical optimization model. A conceptual sublevel stoping operation comprising 30 stopes is used for trialling segregated and integrated scheduling approaches. Segregated medium- and short-term scheduling using separate models achieved an NPV of $42 654 456. The final scheduling approach involved integrating the two scheduling horizons using the newly-developed globally optimal integrated production scheduling model to achieve an NPV of $42 823 657 with smoother mill feed grade. The larger the stope data set, the larger the difference between the two scheduling approaches is likely to be. At the very least, an integrated approach ensures feasibility across the two scheduling horizons, which cannot always be assumed when using a segregated approach.

Dr Stander, Director of the National Institute for Water Research, gave an interesting talk, illustrated with slides and a short film, on the conservation and reclamation of water in South Africa. After question time, Mr Hector, Witbank Town Engineer (visitor) thanked Dr Stander. The meeting closed at 7.10 p.m.

One of the earliest records of metal recovery by solution leaching is described by Agricola as 'juice of rock' in the 1550s. In these early years of hydrometallurgy and civil engineering, few controls and systems were employed to enhance recovery and protect the environment. Since that time, leaching (dump or heap) operations have made significant strides in increasing metal and solution recovery while protecting the environment, all goals of a sustainable operation. It is now recognized that the design and operation of modern heap leach facilities requires contributions from many fields of study, including hydrometallurgy, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, unsaturated-flow hydrology, mine planning, geosynthetics engineering, geochemistry, process engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. While advancements in these fields have resulted in more sustainable heap leach operations, challenges in the industry still exist. A number of heap leach operations exhibit poor or lower-than-predicted metal recovery, loss of solution flow and control within the ore heap, loss of ore heap stability under leach, failure of liner and/or solution recovery systems, and overtopping of process water ponds. A number of these issues may be the result of several compounding conditions. For example, poor metal recovery may be due to an inadequate scale-up assumption (scaling laboratory tests to field-size heaps), lack of control of the in-heap geochemical environment, changes in ore mineralogy from the original design, changes in mechanical and hydraulic properties of the ore from the original design, ore handling and pre-treatment, inadequate solution management system, and inadequate solution application. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss issues that may affect the sustainability of a heap leach operation. Since sustainability encompasses a broad range of topics and issues, the focus of this paper will be on issues affecting metal and solution recovery, solution flow and containment, and stability of the ore heap.

"Flotation columns are normally operated at optimal superficial gas velocities to maintain bubbly flow conditions. However, with increasing superficial gas velocity, loss of bubbly flow may occur with adverse effects on column performance. It is therefore important to identify the maximum superficial gas velocity above which loss of bubbly flow occurs. The maximum superficial gas velocity is usually obtained from a gas holdup versus superficial gas velocity plot in which the linear portion of the graph represents bubbly flow while deviation from the linear relationship indicates a change from the bubbly flow to the churn-turbulent regime. However, this method is difficult to use when the transition from bubbly flow to churn-turbulent flow is gradual, as happens in the presence of frothers. We present two alternative methods in which the flow regime in the column is distinguished by means of radial gas holdup profiles and gas holdup versus time graphs obtained from CFD simulations. Bubbly flow was characterized by saddle-shaped profiles with three distinct peaks, or saddle-shaped profiles with two near-wall peaks and a central minimum, or flat profiles with intermediate features between saddle and parabolic gas holdup profiles. The transition regime was gradual and characterized by flat to parabolic gas holdup profiles that become steeper with increasing superficial gas velocity. The churn-turbulent flow was distinguished by steep parabolic radial gas holdup profiles. Gas holdup versus time graphs were also used to define flow regimes with a constant gas holdup indicating bubbly flow, while wide gas holdup variations indicate churn-turbulent flow. IntroductionTwo types of flow can be distinguished in gasliquid flows in bubble columns: bubbly flow and churn-turbulent flow. The bubbly flow regime is characterized by uniform flow of bubbles of uniform size. Churn-turbulent flow, on the other hand, is characterized by a wide variation in bubble sizes with large bubbles rising rapidly and causing liquid circulation.Flotation columns are normally operated in the bubbly flow regime, which is the optimal condition for column flotation (Finch and Dobby, 1990; Yianatos and Finch, 1990; Ityokumbul, 1992). However, it has been generally observed that flotation column performance deteriorates when the superficial gas velocity is increased beyond a certain limit where the flow regime changes from bubbly flow to churn-turbulent flow (Xu, Finch, and Uribe-Salas, 1991). The identification of this critical or maximum superficial gas velocity is therefore important for optimal operation of flotation columns."

Compressed air is widely used on South African gold mines. However, due to recent and proposed future electricity tariff increases it is quickly becoming too expensive to produce and use. Boxfront chute systems at ore passes were focused on during this study, and a number of alternative power sources were examined. After comparing primarily costs, and secondarily safety and practicality, of a number of systems based on water and hydraulic oil, a system making use of either air or water was determined to be the most cost effective. A payback time of 8 years was calculated, which will be significantly less taking into account the avoidance of failures due to electricity and water shortages, which would not affect this system due to its ability to swap between either air or water. It was recommended that this system be installed at all boxfront chutes as soon as possible so that the company can begin to benefit from the cost savings.

TALKS The Chairman called first on Mr D. E. Couperthwaite to present his paper on 'Heavy media separation' and then on Mr A. F. Leger to present his paper on 'Engineering plastics'. Both presentations, which were illustrated with diagrams, proved of great interest to all members. A vote of thanks to both speakers was proposed by Mr T. Zadkin. CLOSURE After thanking the speakers, the Chairman thanked all present for their attendance and declared the Meeting closed at about 9.30 p.m. Refreshments were then served.

During the period October 2003 to June 2004, a containerized optical sorting pilot plant was operated at Kloof Gold Mine on a waste rock dump. In this paper, we describe the test work and its results leading to the decision to operate this pilot plant. This paper presents the operational data and financial figures achieved during this project, in particular, for the month of June 2004 when the plant was run at full capacity on three shifts, 24 hour operation. These results are also extrapolated and presented to show the profitability of such an operation at today?s gold price levels and cost structure.

Most coal plants must run under conditions of varying feed conditions or are asked to produce qualities different from that used in the design. This can cause overloaded conditions as the ?bottlenecks? within the plant, depending on plant operation or as the feed changes. During plant design, geological information can be used to determine washability envelopes and blends that may be expected. Historical data can also be used to develop a size distribution envelope as well as to assign reasonable models for each of the unit processes. In operation, a plant can be sampled to determine changes and to refine process models. The information obtained can then be used in an accurate simulation to define how the plant can deal with the changing environment. This paper uses Limn: The Flowsheet Processor to simulate the coal plant in detail and will produce an accurate model, in terms of equipment sizing as well as water, medium, and solids balance, for each change in feed condition. It will show examples of running the simulation through complete density and size ranges and will determine the equipment required to address each part of the performance envelope.

Drying, calcination, prereduction, and smelting are the main steps in conventional crude ferronickel production. Industrially, these steps are conducted using the rotary kiln-electric arc furnace (RKEF) process. In this paper, calcination characteristics of Sivrihisar laterite ores from the Central Anatolia region are investigated. The extent of elimination of chemically bound water and other volatiles was studied by experiments conducted at various temperatures in the 250?800°C range. Phase changes were examined using X-ray diffractometry. For the particle size used in the study, 300°C was determined to be almost sufficient for complete transformation of goethite to haematite, and 700°C was required for effective elimination of all volatiles in the ore.

Professor R. P. Plewman graduated with a B.Sc. in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1943, after which he had two years of military service. Mr P. W. J. van Rensburg attended St Andrew's College in Grahamstown before proceeding to the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.Sc. (Eng.) degree cum laude in mining and metal. lurgy at the end of 1942 and was awarded the Chamber of Mines Scholarship and Gold Medal. Dr M. G. Atmore, Deputy Technical Director of the Anglo American Corporation of South Mrica, is also Manpower and Education Adviser to the Chamber of Mines of South Mrica and a Visiting Professor at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. Mr D. A. Vi1joen attended Queen's College, Queenstown, and then Rhodes University, where he gained a diploma in chemistry and a B. Comm. degree. Mr B. E. Protheroe, C.Eng., obtained a degree in Physical Metallurgy at University College, Cardiff, and an M.sc. in corrosion science from Swansea University. Mr N. J. Devine holds a B.Sc. in Metallurgical Engineering and a G.DE Mining Engineering, both from the University of the Witwatersrand. Dr Oskar Steffen graduated as a civil engineer at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1961, and obtained his master's degree in 1963.
