"The purpose of this study is to understand how ore loss and dilution affect the mine call factor, with the aim of subsequently improving the quality of ore mined and fed to the mill. It was necessary to know the relationship between ore mined and delivered for processing in order for the mine to operate efficiently. A review of the literature suggested the mine-to-mill integration approach as a standard intervention to address declining mine call factors. A case study was undertaken at a gold mine in the Free State on the influence of the fragment size distribution on ‘free gold’, the effect of ore loss and dilution on the mill efficiency, and time tracking of ore movement from source to the plant. The study revealed that fragmentation, underground accumulation of ore, and dilution have a significant influence on the mine call factor and mine output. It was difficult to quantify the total ore loss due to the time lag between mining and milling, which is extremely variable, when estimating the mine process inventory. However, it was possible to estimate the total dilution with some degree of precision by analysing the daily blast and head grades. It is therefore recommended that mines accept that some gold loss and dilution will always occur during blasting and transport of broken ore, and this loss must be minimized.IntroductionThe mining of high gold grades is obviously very beneficial for the economic viability of an operation, but optimum recovery of the product is required to maximize profits (Chapman and Bindoff, 2010, p. 13). Although integrating these two requirements is very difficult, due to the various activities occurring between mining and processing, it is indispensable. The main driver of this integration is the impact that different ore types and characteristics have on head grade. According to Isokangas et al. (2012, p. 871), mining and processing operations involve a series of well-defined sequential stages that are complementary in an efficiently operating mine, with the performance of one operation affecting that of another. An attempt to optimize each function separately without considering the whole extraction process will not result in the optimum efficiency of the entire mine. Several researchers have developed a proven methodology for revealing these inefficiencies (Dance et al., 2006, p. 1)."

A powerful, interactive metallurgical process simulator for use on micro- computers has been developed in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. MICROSIM presently allows simulation of all ore-dressing flowsheets and a selection of hydrometallurgical unit operations, and is extendable to all such processes. MICROSIM is written in Pascal. This modern language provides very versatile data structures which can be effectively used to solve the major problem in generalised simulation programs, namely storage and transmission of data relating to liquid and solid phases. Dynamic memory allocation allows optimal utilisation of computer storage space. The simulator utilises very efficient precalculation algorithms that determine the tear streams for optimal sequential modulator calculation convergence. Microcomputer graphics simplifies flowsheet specification, and form-filling data capture with supplied default values eliminate most common input errors.

Rare earth elements (REE) are vital components in modern electronics and green technology products. Supply is tight and global demand is expected to increase, leading to high risk for the economic and national security of countries largely dependent upon foreign supplies. Recycling of REE from consumer and industrial waste materials is a possible way to help meet demand. We have shown previously that biohydrometallurgy can play an economically and environmentally sustainable role in REE recycling, particularly if agriculture or food wastes are used to produce organic acid bioleaching agents. A challenge for organic acid-based bioleaching is the incomplete conversion of the carbon substrate to an optimal organic acid biolixiviant with high REE extraction capability from a variety of REE-containing feedstocks (e.g., mining wastes, magnets from end of life products, spent batteries, etc.). To help meet this challenge a metabolic model was developed for Gluconobacter oxydans to identify options for improving sugar conversion to organic acids. Model predictions were consistent with laboratory data for the microbial consumption of glucose and production of gluconic acid, and suggested that providing growth conditions with relatively high C:N molar ratios could result in lower pH biolixiviant production and thus improve bioleaching. Approximately 850 groundwater samples were collected over a 29 300 km2 region of the semi-arid Northwestern Cape during the site selection phase of the South African radioactive waste disposal project. The purpose of the geostatistical investigation was primarily to delineate metallogenic occurrences and provinces which might exist below the thin veneer of surficial material and could thus interfere with the suitability of the site, and to quantify the distribution patterns of groundwater parameters in order to establish a relationship to local and regional geology. Up to 34 variables were analysed for each sample. Structural analysis revealed that the study area is statistically uniform. The variables have low correlation coefficients, with the exception of major ions, indicating a general poor degree of interrelationship between the spatial distribution patterns of the different variables. On the other hand, the long semivariogram range of the majority of variables, which reaches 70 km in cases, demonstrates their continuity on a regional scale. Kriging, which was repeated for each parameter, reveals that most variables, particularly trace metals, have distribution trends which are not influenced by local geomorphology or surface lithology. A 50 km wide, 220 km long metallogenic province, defined by kriging, could possibly reflect a broad metallogenic imprint on the basement and could represent a target area for prospecting. Kriging also reveals the possible existence of a wrench faulting system which may well have influenced the Namaqualand coastal graben and the western boundary of the Karoo.

Gold has been demonstrated as a possible catalyst for oxidation reactions. Some evidence for a possible promotion effect of platinum has also been recorded. The influence of platinum as promoter for Au/?-Al2O3 prepared via anionic ion-exchange for the oxidation of glycerol was investigated in a batch reactor at 60°C. It is inferred that the addition of platinum reduces the catalytic activity and the rate of deactivation, resulting in an overall higher final conversion of glycerol with increasing platinum loading. The addition of platinum to the catalyst favours the formation of the desired product, glyceric acid.

A decision by joint-venture partners Anglo American, Gencor, and the Industrial Development Corporation to proceed with the expansion of the Columbus Stainless Steel plant in Middelburg will contribute significantly towards the economic growth that South Africa needs so desperately. The expanded facility, expected to come on-line in 1995, will be the largest single-plant producer of stainless steel in the world, and the company will rank sixth overall in world production.

In order to remove heavy metal ions from a large volume of wastewater with a low ion concentration, ion flotation appears to be promisingly effective. In the ion flotation process, because of the high ion removal percentage, the amount of water recovery percentage is a very important factor which determines the process efficiency. However, ion flotation suffers from relatively high collector concentration to achieve the high removal percentage to the desired limit, which subsequently increases the water recovery. In this study, functionalised graphene oxide (FGO) was synthesised, using a chemical method in the ion flotation process, applied as a collector for increasing process efficiency by reducing the collector consumption and water recovery. The high ion removal was achieved with both collectors of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and FGO, while the water recovery with a collector of SDS was 3.4% higher than that with a collector of FGO. The results indicated that the FGO could be effectively used for high ion removal and low water recovery in the ion flotation process. The Tati Activox® Project will be the first full-scale implementation of the patented Activox® process (The Tati Activox® project was deferred in 2008. Please refer to the Norilsk Nickel press issue on the topic for more info). The process was developed by Norilsk Process Technology and has been tested on Tati mine sulphide concentrates in laboratory, pilot and demonstration plant scales and demonstrated its viability. There are inherent risks to the final scale-up of the process from the demo plant and one of them will be investigated in this paper. Compartment 1 is designed to leach approximately 77% of the total nickel leached. For this reason agitation requirements in the first compartment of the autoclave are reviewed. An attempt is made to minimize the process and mechanical risks associated in achieving oxygen mass transfer into the slurry solution. The agitator powers for oxygen mass transfer are calculated using empirical correlations and compared to demonstration plant testwork. The resulting gassed power per unit volume (P/V) is higher than most commercial autoclaves and raises uncertainty on the viability of using such high unit power inputs. Additionally, there is concern about the ability of the autoclave shell to withstand and support the higher loading of large agitators. An alternative solution to designing for the increased P/V is assessed in which the number of compartments within the autoclave is reduced from 5 to 4 by removing the compartment wall separating compartments 1 and 2. This results in an enlarged first compartment containing 3 agitators instead of 2. Therefore the compartment 1 oxygen demand is supplied through 3 agitators, which lowers the P/V per agitator. The reduction in the number of autoclave compartments raises the potential for short-circuiting the mean flow pattern by slurry particles. Short-circuiting and low velocity zones could result in a lower recovery of metal and localized hot spots, respectively. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis was conducted to quantify these concerns and also to evaluate further design considerations. The results indicate that the proposed design change to 4 compartments affects short-circuiting. The impact of increased short-circuiting on the overall autoclave recoveries is not quantified, however; it is expected to be negligible based on testwork done in the Tati Demonstration Plant and similar modifications made to another operating autoclave. The CFD analysis also suggests that there will be no low velocity zones within the compartment.

The efficiency of high capacity SAG mills which consume large amounts of energy depends on the grinding and slurry discharge systems. A 9.7 m × 4.8 m SAG mill with radial pulp lifters is used at the Sarcheshmeh copper complex grinding circuit. The process audit indicated that the pulp discharge system was not efficient, judging by the amount of slurry flow back and carry over. These events limited the discharge rate and increased the wear rate of the lifters and grates. With the objective of finding a new design for pulp lifters, a 3D DEM software (KMPCDEM ©), along with the plant operational data and photographic evidence was used. The KMPCDEM © software was used to compare the efficiency of the radial and curved pulp lifter design based on the material flow. The slurry flow was analysed in terms of ease of discharge and lifter wear rate. It was found that changing the radial pulp lifters to curved pulp lifters could improve the discharge efficiency,and decrease wear rate of the pulp lifter in particular at the base of the pulp lifters. The simulation results showed that if curved lifters with a radius of 0.3×mill radius are used, the amount of slurry flow back and carry over will be negligible. It is predicted that by installing the curved pulp lifters, the capacity of the mill increases by 10% and the pulp lifter service life improves by at least 20%. Ancient mining in Southern Africa, with reference to a copper mine in the Harmony Block, north-eastern Transvaal T. M. EVERS. B.A. (Birm.) (Visitor) and R. P. VAN DEN BERG. B.Sc. (Wits.) (Visitor) A recently discovered mine on the farms Harmony 24 and 25 in the Letaba district has been investigated archaeologically by T. M. Evers and geologically by R. P. van den Berg. The archaeological investigations shed light on the mining techniques and accompanying metallurgical techniques, while the geological investigations give information on the structure and mineralization of the mine. Comparisons with other investigated ancient workings show that mining was well understood in Iron Age times, before the African peoples had any contact with Europeans.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Mines of Southern Kuzbass working out, basically, coal formations of flat seams. Seams, as a rule, are inclined to self-ignition. Detection at early stages of the centers of endogenous underground fires has great value for safe conducting mountain works. One of methods of detection of an early stage of underground fires in the worked out space is the method of superficial radon survey. In the report the method is de-scribed and examples of superficial radon survey on concrete layers are given.

This paper discusses pilot and laboratory-scale metallurgical test work conducted on bulk samples from a low grade heavy mineral deposit and provides an overview of basic practical metallurgical techniques applied to ascertain the suitability of existing production plants to process material from this orebody. Previous investigations have shown this specific orebody to be more challenging in terms of mineral beneficiation as it has a high gangue mineral content. Test work was conducted on targeted stratigraphic units based on lithology and assay results to enable identification of the stratigraphic units portraying quality issues. Unit specific metallurgical pilot work has never been conducted on any of the RBM orebodies and is a new field currently being explored. During this investigation focus was placed on potential quality and yield issues for ilmenite product, with particular reference to CaO quality. A basic evaluation of zircon and rutile separability was also conducted. The test work was conducted using a comparative baseline methodology with metallurgical test work methods specifically aiming at mimicking the existing production plant as closely as possible. This enabled not only the likely metallurgical performance to be assessed but also indicated whether current plant design would be suitable to process the low grade ore types into products of acceptable quality at acceptable yields. The methods and findings discussed in this paper indicate that although there is considerable variation between different units, a blended feed can be successfully processed. With unit specific metallurgical data applied to the existing geological block model, expected yields and recoveries using current plant designs could be predicted.

"Mineral Resource estimation (MRE) and classification are highly dependent on the confidence in the model of the orebody geometry, known as the geological model, within which the estimates are constrained. An understanding of the geology of a deposit is thus fundamental to the Mineral Resource evaluation process. The geological model is a function of the structural and depositional complexity of the geology captured by drilling information, which is limited in the early stages of a project. The information effect has a significant impact in terms of the interpretation of the geology as well as the estimation of grade continuity and the resultant risk associated with the Mineral Resource estimate and classification.Therefore, as new drilling information becomes available, it is necessary to update and refine the geological model to appropriately constrain the resource estimates. The grade information is also updated, including statistics and the spatial correlation characteristics. This refinement is based on geological interpretations derived from the drillhole information that becomes available throughout the life of the mine; orebody knowledge that comes from working experience of the deposit, as well as familiarity with the software package used for modelling, is also important.In updating, the potential to identify new resources in previously unknown areas may be realized. The opposite may also occur where previous interpretations of ore continuity are refuted. Both scenarios could result from a better understanding of the geology of the deposit and thus a more realistic MRE, which reduces geological risk. This paper describes how newly drilled advanced grade-control holes for a gold deposit in Mali were used to refine the 3D geological model for the deposit in an attempt to identify the potential for additional oxide ore using conventional geostatistical evaluation techniques."

To improve the flotation performance of chalcopyrite collector, 2-(tert-butoxy)ethyl xanthate (TBEX) and its derivative O-(2-(tert-butoxy)ethyl)-N-ethyl-thionocarbamate (TBEETC) were designed and prepared by the introduction of a 2-(tert-butoxy) ethyl group into xanthate and thionocarbamate. TBEX and TBEETC were both prepared via the one-pot method with superior efficiency, which has significant commercial implications. The micro-flotation tests demonstrated that compared with sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) and O-isopropyl-N-ethyl-thionocarbamate (Z-200), TBEX and TBEETC both possessed better collecting ability and selectivity for chalcopyrite. DFT calculations and XPS were utilised to investigate the flotation mechanism involving TBEX or TBEETC and chalcopyrite. The results demonstrate that although 2-(tert-butoxy) ethyl group does not interact with minerals directly, its introduction reduces the energy of HOMO, so that they can better accept electrons instead of donating electrons which leads to better interaction with copper atoms rather than iron atoms. "Mill liner wear is a major cost item in the mining industry and there is continuous research to prolong the life of the liners. Over the years it has become apparent that even though high-chromium white cast irons are highly efficient as abrasion-resistant materials, a combination of wear resistance and fracture strength remains difficult to achieve. Increasing the hardness of the high-chrome white cast iron (HCWCI), which improves the resistance to abrasion wear, is often accompanied by a deterioration in fracture strength. Operational conditions inside the mill require that the liner should be made of highly wear-resistant material with some fracture strength. Vanadium additions ranging from 0.2 to 3 wt% were made to HCWCI in an attempt to refine the microstructure. It was found that an increase in vanadium content promotes grain refinement. A content of 1.5-3 wt% gave the best results as measured by the maximum breaking strength.IntroductionOver the years it has become apparent that even though high-chromium white cast irons are highly efficient abrasion-resistant material, a combination of excellent wear resistance and fracture strength remains difficult to achieve. The exceptional wear resistance of highchromium white cast iron (HCWCI) is attributed to hard chromium carbides embedded in an austenitic/martensitic/pearlitic matrix. When the chromium contents exceed 12 wt%, interconnected MC3-type carbides of conventional cast irons are replaced by rodshaped and isolated M7C3 carbides (Powell, 1980), leading to an improvement in the impact toughness, ductility and fatigue resistance. However, the main M7C3 carbides in HCWCI are hard and brittle and can provide an easy path for crack propagation. This limits the applications of HCWCI, particularly in severe impact conditions. Most operations involving HCWCI are in crushing and grinding and the life of a part/liner is limited by its wear resistance. However, improving the wear resistance of HWCI comes at the cost of a significant reduction in fracture strength. Concerns about premature failure of HCWCI mill liners in the mining industries prompted a study to improve the wear resistance and mechanical properties of HCWCI."

SYNOPSIS As a result of a test programme over a period of approximately ten years and a decision to extend the uranium plant, it was decided to design and erect the first full-scale Purlex Plant in the Republic of South Africa. The plant at Buffelsfontein G.M. Co. Ltd. was commissioned in August, 1968, and to date has produced results superior to those predicted in the original estimates. The capital expenditure was R678 000 for a plant capable of treating 1 600 gallons per minute of pregnant solution. Compared with the conventional resin ion exchange process, it has been found that the saving in production costs is 21 cents per pound U3O8 produced. The amine loss is 10 parts per million, which is equivalent to a total organic loss of 250 parts per million. The uranium loss in the raffinate is less than 0.001 g/l U3O8. The final product is of a high quality and it is probable that it is pure enough to convert to the fluoride directly.

Discontinuity Orientation Measurement (DOM) drilling system capable of retrieving the reference line-marked core log, which can be used for determining the relative positions and orientations of discontinuity planes along the borehole axis, has been developed. Accuracy of the borehole joints data measured from the reference-lined core and, eventually, the significance and applicability of DOM drilling system for site exploration are verified by comparing with the spatial characteristics of joints investigated by implementing borehole image-taking instruments in the same borehole. Enhancement of boring efficiency has been also confirmed by performing twin drilling operations, one with DOM drilling system and the other with a conventional drilling machine equipped with D-3 core barrel, on two neighbouring sites of 5 m apart. Ein DOM(Diskontinuitätsorientierungsmessung)-Bohrsystem, das durch Grundlinien markierte Bohrprobelog extrahieren kann und die relativen Lagen und die Orientierungen der sich im Bohrloch verbreitenden Flächen bestimmen kann, ist entwickelt worden. Die Wichtigkeit des DOM-Bohrsystems und dessen Anwendbarkeit auf die Erforschung auf dem Bohrplatz werden dadurch bewiesen, dass man die Genauigkeit der Daten der Bohrlochsspalte, die durch die die Grundlinie zeichnende Bohrprobe gemessen werden, mit dem räumlichen Eigenschaften der Spalte vergleicht, die durch die Bildaufnahme des gleichen Bohrlochs nachgeforscht werden. An approach to the design of a tailings disposal system is presented using an example from a platinum project on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex as a base case. The design is driven by two inputs: namely, maximizing water recovery and minimizing power cost, expressed as cubic metres and kilowatts per ton of solids deposited on the tailings storage facility respectively. The approach considers low-, medium-, and high-density platinum tailings and uses material-specific aspects such as thickening and rheology to determine the most economical option. An analysis based on direct capital and operating cost (water and electricity) shows that the medium-density scenario results in the lowest total cost per ton of tailings deposited, even though this system results in the highest electricity consumption per ton of tailings deposited. As the cost of water and electricity is likely to increase in the future, the higher-density tailings disposal options become more economical, with the paste option the preferred option.
