The Paradela dam has a spillway that makes it possible to discharge a maximum flow of 400 m3/s, the water discharges being on the river Sela, about 2km upstream the river Cávado. After the first use of the spillway, some landslides have occurred on the right bank of the river Sela as a result of the erosion generated on its base about one hundred meters near some houses of a small village. This paper presents a study performed for the slope stability where finite element results are taken into account. A monitoring program was established that essentially consisted of measuring sub-horizontal displacements in points located in boreholes at different depths and also phreatic levels. Some monitoring results are presented. Le barrage de Paradela a une décharge d’eau avec un débit maximal de 400 m3/s sur le fleuve Sela dans un endroit situé environ 2km sur l'amont du fleuve Cávado. Après la première utilisation de cette décharge, quelques glissements se sont vérifiés sur le versant droit du fleuve Sela résultant de l’érosion générée sur sa base dans une zone à 100 mètres de quelques maisons d’un petit village. Ce travail présente une étude réalisée concernant la stabilité du versant avec la considération des résultats des éléments finis. Un programme d’auscultation a été mis en place pour mesurer les déplacements sub-horizontales sur des points situés en forages à des différentes profondeurs. Quelques résultats de cette monitorization sont présentés. Der Ueberlauf des Padela Dammes ermoeglicht das Ablassen einer max. Wassermenge on 400 m3/s in den Sela Fluss, ca. 2 km flussaufwaerts des Cávado Flusses. Nach Inbetriebnahme des Ueberlaufes traten in ca. hundert Meter Entfernung zur Wohnbebauung eine Dorfes Erdrutschungen am rechten Ufer des Sela Flusses auf, die auf Erosionen am Flussbett zurückzuführen waren. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde die Boeschungsstabilitaet unter Beruecksichtigung von Berechnungsergebnissen der Finiten Element Methode untersucht. Es wurde ein essprogramm ausgearbeiten, das im Wesentlichen auf Messungen der Untergrundverformungen in verschiedenen Bohrlochteufen sowie auf Grundwassermessungen beruht. Im Folgenden sind einige Messergebnisse dargestellt.

"Plasma-assisted spheroidisation of metal powders offers several technical advantages with respect to both the ease of materials handling and powder-metallurgical item manufacturing. Advantages include improved flowability, increased powder packing density, elimination of internal component cavities and fractures, changes in morphology resulting in decreased friction between particles and contamination during pneumatic transport and enhanced particle purity. In this empirical study, spherical iron particles were produced using a microwave plasma operating at atmospheric pressure and characterized using optical microscopy and SEM techniques. Iron powders were fed into the system at fixed operating conditions, resulting in particles with spherical structures. The theoretical estimate of the time required for melting to occur is 1.6 ms, an order of magnitude smaller than the actual residence time. IntroductionParticle design and functionalization has become an increasingly popular aspect of materials synthesis and powder-metallurgical item manufacturing. One such technique involves the spheroidisation and densification of feed materials, typically in the form of chemical powders with wide particle size distributions. The major benefits of powder spheroidisation include improved powder flowability, increased powder packing density and powder purity, reductions in internal voids and defects, as well as the ability to manipulate the particles surface morphologies (Boulos, 2004). Thermal plasma processing has the potential for scale-up and for producing industrial quantities of spheroidised powder.Thermal plasma technologies offer a wide spectrum of material synthesis and treatment options, amongst others the synthesis and spheroidisation of nano-sized ceramic and metal particles (Kumar and Selvarajan, 2006). The spheroidisation process occurs within the plasma discharge via in-flight heating and melting of the powder feed material, given high enough plasma temperatures (Fridman, 2008, p. 495). Surface tension in the molten droplets results in spherical, or nearly, spherical, powder particles being formed upon exiting the plasma discharge where the droplet undergoes rapid cooling and freezes. Quite often, the bulk density of these spherical particles is higher than that of the starting material (Boulos, Fauchais and Pfender, 2013, p. 42). The different plasma spheroidisation techniques reported include radio frequency (RF) induction thermal plasmas (Jiang and Boulos, 2006; Karoly and Szepvolgyi, 2005; Yuming, Junjie and Yanwei, 2013), nontransferred direct current (DC) thermal plasmas (Chaturvedi et al., 2014; Kumar and Selvarajan, 2008; Suresh, Selvarajan and Vijay., 2008) and microwave-assisted plasma processing methods (Chen, Gleiman and Phillips, 2001; Vanamu et al., 2004; Weigle et al., 2004)"

It is proposed that the physical and chemical composition of individual mineral particles are an appropriate basis from which to model the performance of minerals processing equipment. Such a particle-based approach enables modelling across disciplines such as comminution, classification and flotation and automatically generates the traditional mass and chemistry balances. The general approach followed is to generate full grade-recovery curves for a separator by sampling product and tailings at varying mass yields. AutoSEM characterisation of each sample provides particle data that is used to reconcile mineral deportment and liberation to the measured size and assay data. In this way, partition surfaces can be generated and modelled. In this paper, an empirical model for the performance of a gravity spiral concentrator treating fine chromite ore is proposed. The model is based on the combination of two partition surfaces and is able to accommodate both forward and reverse gravity concentration effects per size fraction. The results show that this approach is well suited to represent spiral performance for the cases evaluated. The effect of two feed particle size distributions on the performance of the Multotec SC21 and SC25 spirals is demonstrated. Simulations are run in an Excel environment, linked to Python-enabled routines for enhanced data management and calculation speed. More than 30 percent of the global demand for zircon (ZrSi04) is supplied by South Africa. A significant amount of the zircon is exported, and beneficiated products are then imported for industrial applications locally. Beneficiating the zircon locally could have a positive impact on the local market, since zircon is only one of many such cases. Ammonium acid fluoride serves as an alternative anhydrous fluorinating agent for zircon in the synthesis of several metal fluoridesl.2. It provides an effective dry fluorinating method and is easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride or fluorine gas. Zircon exposed to extreme plasma temperatures dissociates and becomes more reactive. The reaction of the plasma-dissociated zircon (Zr02?SiO2) with the ammonium acid fluoride (NH4F?XHF, where x= 1 to 5) forms two main intermediate compounds (NH4)3ZrFr(s) and (NH4) 2SiF6(s), the latter decomposing to form volatile products at relatively low temperatures, providing easy separation of the silicon and zirconium compounds. The ammonium zirconate compound decomposes to form zirconium tetrafluoride (ZrF4), which can be further manufactured into zirconium metal, to name but one product. Data on the kinetics of the reaction of ammonium acid fluoride with zircon and plasma-dissociated zircon, combined with the thermo-dynamic parameters of the reaction, is essential for the development of an industrial process for the production of a precursor for the manufacturing of zirconium metal, namely anhydrous ZrF4. Both the reaction kinetics and reaction parameters will be included in this study, as well as some proof that the reaction proceeds to ZrF4 on a small batch scale. If the exact reaction parameters can be pinned down, a wide spectrum of anhydrous metal fluorides can be synthesized through this fluorination route.

Hydrocyclones are the most commonly used classifiers in the mining industry. The reason for this is their low operating cost and a small footprint. Data from plant trials where screens replaced hydrocyclones indicated that lower bypass of fines and sharper separation could improve breakage rates, with a positive effect on flotation circuit performance throughput. Despite the importance of classification, hydrocyclones have not received as much attention as more expensive comminution units, and their technological progress has been incremental. Noticeable water split (Rf) reductions of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone have been reported in the past. According to theory, the hydrocyclone with reduced Rf will improve classification of fines. A classification study using semi-inverted hydrocyclones was conducted to determine if a hydrocyclone could be operated in a way that would minimise misclassified fines. The classification performance of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone will be presented in this paper and other potential applications will be discussed. "Rio Tinto’s Western Australian expansion, combined with mining within structurally complex geology and increasingly below the water table, presents challenges in effective slope management to ensure safe and economic mining.The Geotechnical Management System (GMS) was developed by Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) to manage geotechnical risks identified during the design process and implementation, and to ensure feedback based on the ‘as-found’ conditions. The GMS utilizes a risk-based approach to geotechnical risk management and is centred on the geotechnical risk and hazard assessment management system (GRAHAMS). GRAHAMS is used to assess pre- and post-control risk for future potential risks (planned slopes), current risks (as-built slopes), and actual geotechnical hazards (realized risks) identified in the pit. This serves as a core operational risk management tool in identifying and prioritizing key risk sectors and management of critical controls. The system’s database reporting functionality supports effective communication of operational risks to operational personnel, as well as reporting the risk profile across operations to management.A rigorous engagement process between design engineers and sitebased engineers is implemented to ensure that key design assumptions, limitations, risks, and opportunities are understood by the site teams. This information, together with mine plan schedule details, is used to assess the design risk and develop appropriate controls. These controls typically include slope performance monitoring and slope reconciliation. The design feedback loop is closed through sharing of key slope performance and reconciliation data with the design teams.The GMS has been successfully implemented in RTIO pits and is fundamental to successful geotechnical slope management. Improved characterization of design assumptions has allowed for re-assessment of the pit design and improved hazard management in high-risk pits. The GMS, GRAHAMS, and other processes reduce the incidence of unexpected slope instability. Improved understanding of rock mass conditions has allowed for economic optimization through redesign of slopes, allowing for an improved understanding of risk and fewer unexpected conditions (surprises), hence an increased realized value."

The simulation of multi-component classification with modified viscosity model is the key focus in the current study. The classification of the ores using hydrocyclone is a renowned process and has a convoluted flow separation phenomenon. The highly turbulent flow inside hydrocyclone depends on the operating and design parameters apart from the feed mixture. Slurry viscosity also plays a dominant role in the classification of solid particles under the centrifugal settling action. A heterogeneous mixture with different components would result in different settling and rheological behaviour of particles’ suspension in the water medium. The newly proposed multi-component viscosity model (Mandakini et al. 2020) is implemented as a user-defined function to define the material property during the CFD study of the mixture rheology inside hydrocyclone classifier. The multiphase and turbulence model is solved using the modified Algebraic Slip Model and Large Eddy Simulation model. A comparison of the predicted component performance curves is evaluated with and without the corrected viscosity model. The density and size effect on the particle phase distribution inside the classifier are compared, where the misplacements of the finer particles are carefully assessed. Validation of the component classification in hydrocyclone with the laboratory experiments found a close agreement with the rheology based CFD data. Spiral concentrators are compact, cost-effective and generally efficient gravity concentration separators for a wide range of applications (for example: coal, beach sands, iron ore, chromite and tantalite). Large mineral processing plants consist of thousands of spiral concentrators resulting in large plant footprints (capital intensive) and the adjustment of splitters is time consuming, impractical and is in many cases neglected?high capacity (HC) spiral concentrators aim to address these shortcomings. As a result Exxaro Namakwa Sands is currently investigating high capacity spiral technology for the spiral circuit upgrade at the primary concentrator plants (PCPs). This article summarizes the rougher spiral performance evaluation that was conducted on different types of spiral concentrators (the traditional MG4 spiral concentrator and the high capacity (HC) spiral concentrator) under different feed conditions. In addition, the effect of slimes on the spiral concentrator performance was also investigated. Slimes rheology was linked to the poor concentrator performance at the higher slimes concentrations. The test campaign shows a sacrifice in recovery under design-feed conditions can be expected when using high capacity spiral concentrators in the rougher stage when compared to traditional spiral technology currently in use. Both spiral concentrators show a detrimental impact of slimes on the performance, but the high capacity spiral concentrator is more sensitive to the higher slimes conditions.

Selecting ground motion prediction models (GMPM) is crucial in assessing seismic hazard levels in a specific region. This study investigates the influence of ground motion model (GMM) selection on seismic hazard assessment in Johannesburg, South Africa. Most seismic events affecting Johannesburg are related to mining activities and water ingress into the underground mine voids. The most seismically active regions in South Africa include areas around Klerksdorp, Welkom, and Carletonville. These regions experience a significant number of earthquakes, with mining activities being a major factor contributing to seismic events. Ten ground motion prediction equations were selected from regions of similar tectonics setting and were assessed to see if they correspond to the available local data. Six of these were also compared to the ground motions produced by the earthquake of 14 August 2014, which occurred in the Orkney area, one of the mining areas in South Africa. Sensitivity analyses were also carried out to assess the influence of ground motion prediction equations (GMPE) on the seismic hazard of Johannesburg. The results indicate that the choice of GMPM significantly affects the estimation of seismic hazard levels in Johannesburg. Different GMM can lead to varying ground shaking intensity predictions, impacting risk assessments and engineering design considerations. The findings highlight the importance of carefully selecting appropriate GMM tailored to Johannesburg’s specific geological and tectonic characteristics. Understanding how different models perform in this region is essential for accurate seismic risk mitigation strategies.

The CSense advanced process control (APC) solution?s main objective was to improve the stability of the pH in the first stage leach process thereby improving nickel and iron extraction efficiencies and reducing the base metal (BM) content in the platinum group metals (PGM) concentrate. By improving the stability of the control of the pH on the first stage leach it had the corresponding effect of improving the Ni extraction efficiency by 0.5% and the Fe extraction efficiency by 3.3%. The system relieved the operators of many decisions that were virtually impossible to make given the complex, variable and real-time nature of the processes in their charge. On the operational side, the operators understand the APC system and they trust it. Another benefit is the reduction in pH peaks in the autoclave, which can oxidize certain elements whereby they become difficult, if not impossible, to leach. These elements go right through the process and end up contaminating the PGM solids, with the result that the entire batch has to be recycled through a lengthy and costly processing pipeline.

The results of coal sink and float tests are plotted as washability curves. Analysis of these curves indicates the most effective method by which the coal can be cleaned. Sink and float experiments are samplingdependent, destructive, and use toxic chemicals. The present research introduces an alternative method based on a 3D imaging system called RhoVol, in which the density of individual particles is determined from mass and volume measurements. A quantitative error analysis was conducted on coal sample density measurements obtained by RhoVol, and the main factors influencing the errors identified and investigated. The results show that the drawback of this technique is related to its not being able to detect hidden concavities in the particle, resulting in an overestimation of particle volume. Furthermore, it is difficult to capture the impact of porosity and cracks on the volume of coal particles obtained from 3D silhouette images. This mismatch between the RhoVol data and sink and float test results has led to attempts to apply neural network (NN) and linear regression techniques to produce a fully reliable model for correction and estimation of coal density. The NN approach offers superior predictive capability over linear regression, and the estimated density distribution is in line with the sink and float analysis. The root mean square error in estimation of density using the NN model was less than 0.05 g/cm³.

Selected members of the slag system were reduced in graphite crucibles in an argon atmosphere, and the physicochemical properties of the reduced derivatives of the slags were determined in inert crucibles. It was found that slags having magnesium aluminium titanate as the primary phase before reduction underwent an increase in liquidus temperature, accompanied by a change in the primary phase. No analogous behaviour could be detected for the slags having perovskite as the initial primary crystallization product. In most instances, the viscosity of the melt passed through an initial minimum, followed by an increase as the reduction time was extended. Increased MgO/CaO ratio. basicity, titania content, and reduction temperature all served to accelerate thickening. During reduction, the electrical conductivity of the slags tended to rise relative to the value for the unreduced melt.

The 10.5–12.5% chromium, titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel (FSS) plates used to fabricate coal line jumbo wagons is susceptible to undesirable chromium depletion during welding with 309L electrodes. In this work, non-stabilized FSS plates were welded using 308L welding electrodes. The objective was to weld non-stabilized FSSs using gas-shielded metal arc welding without causing sensitization. The welding process was optimized by lowering the heat input. Sensitization was assessed by rigorous etching techniques and anodic polarization scans. In addition, the welds were subjected to tensile testing, and their fracture surfaces were examined for intergranular cracking. Non-stabilized FSS plates were successfully welded using gas metal arc welding.

Various morphological parameters that affect the flotation recovery of sphalerite were modelled and optimized using the response surface method (RSM). The effects of roughness value, shape factor, and collector concentration were investigated using the central composite full design method. The results were evaluated by analysis of variance. The optimum roughening time was found to be 25minutes, the optimum roughness value was 2.9071 μm, and the optimum collector concentrationwas 0.001 M. Using these values, a flotation recovery of 98.01% was obtained. Similarly, in shapefactor studies, the optimum grinding time was 15 seconds, the optimum roundness value 0.7421, and the optimum collector concentration 0.0009 M, which resulted in a flotation recovery of 94.30%. The average error between the optimization results and the experimental results was estimated to be less than 6%, and the R2 values were greater than 90%. The study shows that RSM can be effectively applied in finding the economic optimum condition for obtaining maximum flotation recovery with minimum reagent consumption.

Compared with sinusoidal oscillation, non-sinusoidal oscillation enhances the ability to control waveform and meets different oscillation requirements by adding an independent parameter, which is the key technology for high-efficiency continuous casting. A new waveform of mould non-sinusoidal oscillation is proposed in this paper, that is, a velocity waveform that is composed only of straight lines and parabolas, which not only has good dynamic characteristics, but also further enhances the feature of non-sinusoidal oscillation. Compared with sinusoidal oscillation, the negative strip time is reduced by 15.9%, the maximum negative strip velocity difference is increased by 38.3%, and the maximum positive strip velocity difference is decreased by 27.8%. The formulas of oscillation process parameters can be clearly deduced, and the isoplethic curves of oscillation process parameters when multi-parameter simultaneously changes are drawn. The negative strip time decreases as the modification ratio, frequency, and casting speed increase, but increases as stroke increases. In order to maintain the stability of negative strip time, an oscillation synchronous control model for optimising oscillation basic parameters was developed. Through practical application, the mean oscillation mark depths decreased by 10.1 μm and the flux consumption is increased from 0.37 kg/t to 0.45 kg/t in the non-sinusoidal oscillation model, which meets the requirements of normal production.

"SAMPLING: THE IMPACT ON COSTS AND DECISION MAKING1. INTRODUCTIONFor years those in the minerals industry have been taking samples to assist them in making decisions; whether they be about investing billions of rand in a new mining operation, or simply whether a truck load of mineralised material should go to the mill or the waste dump, - we need a sample to help us make our decisions. This paper emphasises the importance and significance of sampling as a process, some of the associated technical problems and some of the advantages, especially in the light of traditional approaches that has usually left mine sampling to the least educated and lowest paid individuals on the mine. Perhaps the most important aspect that requires attention is the variability, usually measured in terms of precision, that tends to infect the sampling procedures. Francis Pitard 12 has stated: ""There is no such thing as reliable feasibility studies, unbiased ore grade control, accurate environmental assessments or effective process control, if you cannot identify and minimize the seven (ten) major sources of sampling variability. "" It is these ten sources of sampling variability and the way they arise that are briefly investigated. Variability is measured in terms of variances and rather than being self-compensating, there is good evidence to indicate that they are in fact additive at every step in the sampling and analytical process."

As you know, there were a number of other deaths during the year, which were reported at previous General Meetings of the Institute. We are very glad, too, to have with us a visitor from England, Professor Raynor and Mrs Raynor. Professor Raynor is Professor of Metallurgy at Birmingham University, and a very well-known metallurgist in Britain. We also have with us the Chairman of the Ferro-Alloys Association. We are expecting the Chairman of our Witbank/Middelburg Branch, the Chairman of the Engineers' Liaison Committee, Pretoria, the Director of the Witwatersrand College of Technical Education, and, of course, our old friend, Mr Eric Boden, the Manager of A.S. and T.S. It is a very great pleasure to have with us a number of persons who will receive honorary Life Fellowship at this meeting, and there are some Gold Medal winners and winners of our Student Prizes. Rheological measurements on pulps from South African gold mines by G. s. HANSFORD, Ph.D. (Pennsylvania), M.Sc. (Cape Town), C. D. LEVY, B.Sc. (Eng.), and J. W. DE KOCK, Ph.D. (Cantab.), B.Sc. (A.I.C.) (Visitors) A method is described for the determination of the rheological parameters of a fast-settling slurry with conventional viscometric measuring equipment. The effect of concentration, temperature, and pH on these parameters is investigated. The results agree with those obtained by previous workers using different viscometers, but this method allows a more detailed characterization of all the properties. From a literature survey, two semi-empirical equations were found that allow the effect of concentration, temperature, or pH on the rheological parameters to be correlated.
