The process of initiating opencast blasts through long cables is onerous. An obvious alternative is to replace these with radio controlled firing apparatus. Such devices appear from time to time and with the advance of telecommunications, more are likely to appear. However, there are two crucial and seemingly intractable obstacles to overcome: firstly, the problem of malfunction of the system, which can either fire prematurely or go into a state of suspense in which it is unknown whether firing might unexpectedly occur, and secondly, the problem of terrorism, as such a system could provide the capability for an off the shelf remote bomb. The issues of accessibility and electronic reliability when linked to explosives in a mining environment have to be demonstrated to be adequately covered before serious consideration should be given to these systems, up to now largely confined to military applications.

The intention is to solve a series of problems in the flotation and desiliconisation of complex bauxite; aiming to achieve monomer dissociation of target minerals based on process mineralogy. According to the mineral surface, there are differences in physical and chemical properties and the molecular design theory of flotation agents. Designing the polar and non-polar groups of the bauxite flotation collector to make the reagent group easily combine with the mineral to form a cyclic chelate, will enhance the collection performance, and strengthen the drug selection performance. Developing a new type of positive flotation collector for bauxite with small dosage, strong selectivity and low foam volume. "Low-pressure cold gas dynamic spraying was used to deposit WC-4wt%Ni and WC-4wt%Ni-1wt%Mo coatings onto mild steel. Dense coatings with very low porosities were produced. No decarburization occurred during deposition and no deleterious phases were formed. The coatings were subjected to standardized material characterization tests, as well as slurry abrasion testing to assess their wear behaviour. The wear tests were conducted in synthetic minewater-silica slurries, while distilled watersilica slurries were used as a control. The hardness of the coatings, 512HV0.3 and 458HV0.3 for WC-4wt%Ni and WC-4wt%Ni-1wt%Mo respectively, are comparable to those achieved using high-temperature coating processes. The abrasion wear rates for both coatings were less than 5 mg/min and 10 mg/min in the distilled water-silica and synthetic mine water-silica slurries respectively. The approximately 50% increase in wear rate in the synthetic minewater slurry is attributed to a synergistic corrosive wear mechanism. The predominant wear mechanisms were identified as binder smearing and delamination, with carbide grain fracture and pull-out. IntroductionSlurry abrasion is a common phenomenon in mining operations, particularly in pipelines transporting, for example, sand-water slurries. This type of wear can cause pipeline fracture, shortened operational lifetimes, and impede pipeline efficiency. To reduce or limit abrasion, thermally sprayed tungsten-carbide-based coatings are often used as pipe linings (Kanchan et al., 2010). This is due to their attractive mechanical properties, which include high wear resistance, stiffness, hardness, compressive strength, and tensile strength. These properties are provided by the coating microstructure and composition, which is a blend of hard, wear-resistant tungsten carbide (WC) particles embedded in a fracture-tough metallic binder phase (Brookes, 1997). Cobalt (Co) is the most commonly used binder due to its excellent wetting of the WC phase and moderate mechanical properties; however, its application is limited to non-corrosive environments as it has a low corrosion and oxidation resistance (Andren, 2001). Nickel (Ni) may also be used as a binder, and has been shown to have superior oxidation and corrosion resistance, but in some applications may not have the required mechanical properties (Kim et al., 2006)."

Uncertainty with regard to estimated grades and tonnages of a mineral deposit demands risk assessment in order to build investor confidence and attract the interest of other stakeholders in the success of a project. Uncertainties associated with Mineral Resource estimates can lead to unreliable production schedules and unpredictable cash flows. However, the techniques used in the mining industry to determine these uncertainties are inconsistent, because the important decisions taken in the process are solely dependent on the responsible Competent Person (CP), without limitations. This leads to disparities between different CPs’ results, using data-sets from the same drill-holes. The various standard codes for public disclosure provide guidelines and recommendations for the classification of Mineral Resources and Reserves but do not provide details on, for example, the amount of geological and geostatistical information needed to qualify for each category of Resources and Reserves. The parameters used to generate the classification categories are subjectively assumed by the responsible CP. In this paper we investigate the impacts of different CPs’ judgements on resource classification, using the same data-sets. The results underpin the need for the mining industry to develop a uniform Mineral Resources and Reserves classification framework that can minimize or avoid significant discrepancies that lead to potential misleading public disclosures.

The South African gold mining industry has a legacy of abundant tailings dams, which have attracted the attention of investors because of their potential as a cheaper secondary gold resource. In this we investigate study gold recovery from a refractory calcine tailings dam. Bulk mineralogy of the tailings silicates and iron oxides to be the most abundant phases. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) showed gold to exist in submicrometre and micrometre sizes, as free gold, and associated with arsenic, sulphur, and silicates e.g. quartz and talc. Gold recovery by direct cyanidation was low at 17.3%. Mechanical (ultra fine grinding P80 -16μm) and chemical (alkaline, NaOH) pre-treatment and microwave roasting and microwave-assisted cyanide leaching were investigated to increase gold recoveries. Ultrafine grinding was the most effective, producing recoveries of 66.5%. NaOH pre-leaching of ultrafine milled material increased recovery to 71.5%. Alkaline pre-leaching overall increased recoveries for non-pretreated material, making this process the most preferred because it is less costly than ultrafine grinding. Microwave roasting and microwave-assisted leaching did not achieve higher recoveries than alkaline pre-treatment or fine grinding. The investigation highlights and confirms that chemical treatment with NaOH is a powerful tool for gold extraction from refractory tailings.

1. Book review • World mineral statistics 1974 to 1978. Production: Exports: Imports. London, H.M.S.O., Institute of Geological Sciences, 1980. (Reviewer: R. P. King) This edition is the third in a regular series prepared by the Institute of Geological Sciences. It is a useful compilation of statistics on the production, export, and import of fifty-eight different mineral commodities. Each mineral is listed by country, and a table is provided for the annual production, the annual imports, and the annual exports for each commodity included. However, some commodities are treated in considerably more detail; for example, aluminium and bauxite have tables under the following headings: Production of Bauxite, Production of Alumina, Production of Primary Aluminium, Exports of Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium, Imports of Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium. The information presented is the latest official information available from primary sources; the compilers have not relied on data from secondary compilations. This publication will be of considerable assistance to all who are concerned with the trading of mineral commodities and their production.

The separation and beneficiation of low grade collophanite has long been a technical challenge in phosphorous production. It requires the joint efforts of process design, reagents optimisation and operational control. In this study, the statistical response surface method was applied for determining the optimum reagent dosing in the flocculate flotation of a low grade (18.59%) collophanite ore. The dosage of three reagents, including a pH regulator (Na2CO3), depressant (Na2SiO3) and flocculant (modified starch), were input parameters of the modelling design. Two quadratic mathematical models were derived for prediction of grade and recovery based on the statistical design. Statistical analysis of the experimental results validates the reliability of the models. Through further calculation, the optimum dosage of the three reagents were found to be 3,020g/t Na2CO3, 1,990g/t Na2SiO3 and 880g/t modified starch, with which a maximum recovery of 75.81% and P2O5 grade of 30.08% was obtained from flocculate flotation test. This paper presents a detailed and systematic approach to metallurgy diagnostics using an integrated novel gold deportment technique for complex copper-gold and refractory gold ore bodies. This uantitative gold deportment for these complex ore bodies is a challenging task due to reasons such as lower grades, high variability of visible and invisible gold content in different sulphides and iron oxide phases, significant presence of disseminated and composite carbonaceous matters along with associations of various copper sulphide phases. Gold mostly occurs as "invisible gold" (sub-microscopic gold) as solid solution or as colloidal-sized particles in different sulphides and other phases. The dominance of invisible gold and presence of highly preg-robbing and finely disseminated carbonaceous matter adversely affects gold recovery in flotation and leach circuits. Studies were initiated on various complex ore deposits and also on samples representing various process streams. Some case studies are presented in this paper to demonstrate the value of a high confidence gold deportment methodology in developing insights for problem diagnostics and to identify opportunities for metallurgical improvements. A systematic and holistic approach involving different fields of expertise is critical for successful development and delivery of solutions for complex ore bodies. The free ligand (FL) model is an intuitive model to calculate the equilibrium concentrations in solvent extraction (SX) based on the distribution coefficient (Kd) at infinite dilution and the fraction of free ligand available for extraction. In this work, the FL model is validated to account for co-extraction of Ni and for designing the extraction and scrubbing sections of Co/Ni separation in a base metal refinery. Cyanex 272 is employed as a selective Co extractant in the process to yield high purity Ni. To enhance the loading capacity of the extractant, 50 mol% of NaOH is pre-loaded into it. Experimental and FL modelling results show that four equilibrium stages are required to purify the 99% Ni feed to a 99.97% Ni raffinate. The 53.59% co-extract with 26.76% free ligand is purified with a reflux scrub of 30 g Co/L in one equilibrium stage to 99.01%, Co in the scrubbed extract. The FL model as well as the Co/Ni/Na-analysis of the aqueous phase confirm that in the scrubbing section, Ni in the extract is mainly replaced by Co. Finally, in the one stage stripper the Co concentration in the scrubbed extract is increased from 5.6 g Co/L in the extract to 30.5 g Co/L that is partially used as reflux scrub liquor.

Toll and custom treatment of base metal concentrates have been performed for decades as mines and concentrators are developed distant from capital and, energy-intensive smelting and refining facilities. Commercial treatment terms have been developed and refined for over a century, and are negotiated taking into account a complex array of quality and economic factors. Treatment of third-party concentrates in the South African platinum industry is a comparatively recent development, brought about by the opening up of mineral rights and operations being developed that are smaller than the critical size required to sustain capitalization of smelting or refining plant. Published commercial terms have not been demonstrated to reflect the complexities and subtleties of base metal concentrate markets. This paper outlines some key elements and parameter ranges of base metal concentrate treatment contracts, and applies similar principles to typical Merensky and UG2 platinum group element (PGE) concentrates to determine potential value distribution between the mining and treatment parties in tolling arrangements.

Several longwall faces in India have collapsed due to adverse geological conditions and/or inadequate capacity of powered supports. Thus it is imperative to access the capacity of a powered support and its interaction at longwall faces of varying geomining conditions in advance with lots of confidence. To achieve this, an index has been developed to ascertain the front leg pressure (FLP) of chock-shield support and roof-to-floor convergence (RFC) at longwall faces. The index called ?Longwall Face Stability Index? (LFSI) has been developed using statistics and Finite Element Modelling (FEM). The front leg pressure (FLP) and roof-to-floor convergence (RFC) predicted from the LFSI are validated with the field monitored data from two longwall panels. In this study, an attempt is also made to incorporate various geomining conditions into the finite element models typical of longwall mining practice. The index has taken into account the wide variations of geomining parameters like thickness, young?s modulus and friction angle of main roof (small, large), coal type (soft, hard), powered support capacity, and depth of coal seam. Thus, LFSI can be thought of as an index representing combined effect of roof type, geomining conditions and powered support capacity.

On 23rd October, 1969, 54 members of the Institute set out at an early hour from Rand Airport in two chartered Dakota aircraft for a visit to the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam site. The weather was at the start rather unpromising but after passing Bloemfontein the overcast cleared and it turned into a glorious day for a most memorable visit. The Institute is indebted to U.C-Dumez-Borie Dams Limited, the main civil engineering contractors, and Mr J. D. McNamara their executive manager, for the very excellent arrangements made for this excursion. From the time the aircraft landed till a slightly belated departure the organisation of the extensive tours arranged for the parties was quite outstanding and a matter for congratulation to all concerned. At each of the many places visited there was a senior official to give an authoritative and comprehensive description of the work under his control. In addition the guides on the buses, loaned by the Department of Water Affairs, kept up an interesting running commentary throughout the day. A further much appreciated facet was the introduction of many of the experts on the site and a brief talk by each after an excellent lunch served at the recreation club. Each visitor also received a brochure with a progress report and a detailed site plan, with various sections highlighted in colour, and obviously prepared at the cost of much time and effort. The visit included tours of the large dolerite quarry, where some 150 000 tons of rock are removed each month, the 42 in. gyratory primary crusher, the secondary crushing and screening plant, the rod mill plant for sand production, and the automated blending and concrete batching plant. The transport of mixed concrete by 'silobuses' to the 6 cu. yd buckets of four Blondin cableways, two of which are radially movable and two with buffing towers, and the placing of the concrete in the huge blocks of the wall was watched from a vantage point. The most interesting part of the visit was without a doubt the inspection of the wall itself and the explanations of the many intricasies of its design and care in construction, covering aspects such as positioning of galleys, interlocking of blocks, reinforcement, refrigeration, actual concrete placing, subsequent grouting, etc. Other points of interest were the very complicated design of the wall itself, the river diversion plans, with three stages of coffer dams, the spillways, and the very well cut penstock tunnels.

(Hons.) in chemistry (1949) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Mr G. C. Thompson matriculated at Dale College in 1951. He then attended the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.8c. (Min. Eng.) in 1959. Mr P. T. Fewell was born and educated in the United Kingdom. After obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) in 1958 at Sheffield University, he emigrated to South Africa. DtP. R. Jochens, Pr. Eng., has been a member of Council since 1974, serving as President in 1980-1981.

In April of 2013 a 48 MVA submerged arc furnace producing silicomanganese was excavated in South Africa. One of the areas excavated systematically was the furnace taphole. The aim was to obtain a refractory wear profile of the tap-hole area, together with affected hearth and sidewall refractory. Subsequently, thermodynamic modelling was applied to quantify the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag and refractory and metal in the tap-hole area.

A mine is essentially a series of operations, including drilling and blasting, crushing, milling, flotation, and leaching, that are interconnected and therefore interrelated, with the performance of one operation affecting the performance of another. Optimizing each stage separately without considering the whole system often causes potential economic benefits and energy savings to be missed. However, the PIO methodology is a thorough approach which considers these individual process activities within the context of the whole process. The basic principle is to optimize the process as a whole, rather than each process step in isolation from the others. Metso?s Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) group offers a global consulting service for the mining and construction industries. A significant amount of this consulting work involves process integration and optimization (PIO) studies. When conducting a PIO study, every aspect of the process is considered. In addition to drilling and blasting, transportation, handling and storage, crushing, screening, grinding, flotation, separation, and recovery, other aspects including equipment utilization and energy consumption and even greenhouse gas emissions are also included if necessary. In a PIO project, it is very important to understand what type of material is being processed at any point in time. That is, which domain or domains is the material part of? This is necessary in order to observe the effect of different ore sources (and the blending of sources) on concentrator performance. Linking the ore from the pit to the concentrator required the development of an ore tracking system. As a result, PTI developed a radio-frequency based material tracking system called SmartTag?. This system allows tracking of ore from its source through blasting, run-of-mine (ROM) pads, crushers, intermediate stockpiles, and finally into the concentrator. Using the SmartTag? system, definitive correlations can be made between the performance of the plant and the plant feed characteristics, including the domain from which the feed ore originated. Since its commercialization in 2007, SmartTag? has been used in the majority of PTI?s consulting projects and several permanent systems have been installed worldwide1. Successful applications of the SmartTag? system have encouraged development to allow the system to be used in a wider variety of plants, in particular plants with finer crushing and screening stages. This paper describes how the SmartTag? system is being utilized by PTI and the benefits being gained by its use in PIO projects, as well as presenting some case studies.

In dealing with transformational aspects, the South African Constitution aspires for a balance between attempts to broadly represent the country’s demographics in the way in which organizations are structured and the need to maintain the necessary skills to ensure continual retention of skills for optimum and efficient organizational performance. Through the Mining Charter, government aimed to redress gender and racial imbalances in the mining industry as part of transforming the demographic representation of mining companies to include black people, women, and people living with disabilities in all job levels up to top management. While the Constitution calls for an appropriate balance between demographic representation and competency, this aspiration for mining poses challenges for companies due to the proficient and competent skills needed in this industry. To this end, the South African mining industry has been subjected to substantial criticism from government regarding the slow progress of transformation. The mining industry justifies its slow pace of transformation by pointing at inconsistent, varying legislation and definitions governing transformation, limited skills available from historically disadvantaged groups, and cautioning not to compromise the sustainability of mining companies by marginalizing white males and white youth with the objective of addressing racial imbalances. This lack of understanding between industry and the government has led to considerable confusion regarding the accountability of stakeholders in transforming the industry. This article presents the perspectives of ten mining executives on transformation in the South African mining industry. The theoretical description of transformation, as well as other mining stakeholders’ interpretations of transformation. is presented. Qualitative data from interviews with mining executives demonstrates their understanding of transformation through rich descriptions, interpretations, and implications in their contexts. The findings demonstrate that transformation in the mining industry is not simply about race and gender, but about cultural change, a change in mind-sets, embracing diversity, equalizing rights and opportunities, and attaining social justice. Moreover, transformation is clearly a gradual process. The article concludes with a recommendation for the definition of transformation to be corroborated with the views of mining executives and that of the Constitution of South Africa. This will create an overarching, simplified definition of transformation that can be accepted and interpreted by all stakeholders.

"This article describes the re-engineering principles applied in the design of a personnel transportation system for the Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine in the Rustenburg area of South Africa. It incorporates conveyor belt travelling, chairlift operation, and also includes consideration of proposed changes/modifications to the existing conveyor belt infrastructure.The purpose of the project was to identify, through a process of evaluation, the appropriate option and/or combination of transportation options that would be safe in terms of personnel transportation as well as cost-effective. Alternative measures for transporting personnel (not using belt riding) would have a significant positive spin-off, increasing the availability of the belt and thereby increasing production. This paper explores the feasibility of interventions that would improve safety through eliminating risk associated with personnel transportation as well as contributing towards improving the mine’s position on the cost curve.The design in consideration at the Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine consists of two shaft systems, namely the North Shaft and South Shaft, each comprising twin decline shafts. One of the decline shafts is equipped with a conveyor belt for rock and personnel transportation, and the other with a winder for trackbound material transport. The conveyor belt has been used for personnel transportation since the commissioning of the shafts. The conveyor belt is equipped with platforms for personnel getting off and on the belt and a number of safety devices designed to ensure safety while travelling on the belt. Intensive training in the practical aspects of belt riding is given to every person, and unsupervised riding on the belt is permitted only once belt riding competence is demonstrated. Despite this, the safety results were poor, with 106 injuries between 2006 and May 2013. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported during this period.An investigation of alternative means for personnel transportation or engineered solutions to the current conveyor belt infrastructure in the safest, most effective, and most economical way was therefore needed. There was a major risk of safety-related stoppages being imposed following another belt accident/incident. This would prevent the mine from transporting personnel underground by belt and result in major production losses. From the commissioning of the Phase 2 shaft deepening project on both shafts, dedicated chairlifts have been used for personnel transportation as opposed to the conveyor belt installed in the Phase 1 area. The chairlifts have been in operation since 2004 and no chairlift-related incidents have been recorded thus far. According to safety statistics, it is clear that the chairlift is the safer method for the transportation of people in the shaft.To fulfil the objectives/scope of this study, it was recommended that both primary (new chairlift decline with infrastructure) and secondary options (modifications to the current conveyor belt infrastructure) be considered for implementation on both the North Shaft and South Shaft to reduce or eliminate accidents/incidents as a result of belt transportation. The associated capital expenditure would be approximately R200 million. Considering the future impact on the business as a whole, this would definitely be capital well spent."
