Advances in mining technology have enabled deeper seams of coal to be mined from the surface. Highwall mining is frequently used to mine areas at the perimeters of a surface mine when removal of the overburden becomes uneconomical or threatens environmentally sensitive surface features. At the same time, advances in materials and technology have enabled highwall mining of coal that create blind headings over 300 meters in length. Deeper surface mining and deeper highwall penetration depths have lead to more frequent encounters with methane gas. While this coal is remotely mined from the surface, underground ignitions of methane have propagated to the surface and injured miners. Methods described in this paper show how this hazard can be correctly monitored and controlled for auger type highwall mining machines. Research indicates that small quantities of gas liberated during mining migrate to the face, creating higher gas concentrations than would otherwise be expected. Using the same principles that cause the gas to migrate to the face, researchers have shown that inert gas introduced at the collar of the hole can inert the entire hole, thus ensuring safe conditions for mining.

Estimates are given for the distance from a seismometer at which a miner can probably be detected. The procedure in making these estimates was to first establish the natural noise levels at the output of a surface seismometer for the 25 to 100 Hz frequency passband. The noise levels give the range of values which may be expected in areas with no man-made noise. For each noise level, we give the detection threshold which, when exceeded, indicates that a signal has been received. Based on the signals recorded by Westinghouse, curves are given which show the peak signal amplitude as a function of source- to-receiver distance (slant range). Curves are given for the Westinghouse seismic thumper, a 50-pound timber, and a sledge. For a given type of source, the receive signal strength depends more strongly on slant range than on any other factor. However, there is approximately a five-to-one scatter in the amplitudes. Thus, further study of factors affecting the signal amplitude might allow better estimates to be made for any particular geological setting. Combining the signal amplitude with the detection thresholds for the different noise conditions gives the distances at which a miner should be detected. These are given in Table l* below. [ ] The text also gives the increase in detection ranges which should occur if steps are taken to increase S/N by 10 dB. We feel that 10 dB is a conservative estimate of the improvement possible. During an actual rescue operation, the seismic crew and system should be capable of making on-site estimates of their detection capability, based on measurements of the site noise, and upon the best available estimates of the

This paper, which describes the milling practice at the Page concentrator of the Federal Mining and Smelting Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Page mine and mill are located on Silver Creek, 3 miles west of Kellogg, Idaho, and 1 mile south of United States Highway No. 10. Supplies and concentrates are hauled by truck over an automobile road which connects Highway No. 10 with the property. The concentrator has capacity to treat 300 tons of ore per day and utilizes all-flotation methods of treatment. Power is supplied from the main line of the Washington Water Power Co. which runs from Spokane, Wash., to Kellogg, Idaho. Water is obtained from the mine and also from a well which is situated 1 mile distant from the concentrator and about 600 feet in elevation below the concentrator.

"INTRODUCTION The Sullivan Mine was examined by Thomas L. Chapman, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in March 1943. Samples taken from the few mineralized exposures justified further investigation of the property. This report describes reconnaissance by the Bureau of Mines of titanium-bearing beach sands on Ship Island in the Gulf of Mexico off the south coast of Harrison County, Miss. The purpose was to determine the ilmenite, rutile, and associated heavy-mineral content of black-sand-bearing beach sands. The investigation was part of a survey of titanium resources of the United States. Ilmenite (FeTi03), an iron-titanium oxide, is the major titanium-bearing mineral consumed in the titanium pigment industry. Rutile (TiO2), titanium dioxide, is used mainly as a constituent in welding-rod coatings and in producing titanium metal. The major fieldwork was conducted during the first half of February 1961. Nine holes, totaling 220 feet of bore, from which 110 samples Her taken, were drilled at widely spaced intervals on the island.

Electron diffraction and electron microscopy were used to determine the unit cell parameters of garnierite [(Ni,Mg)3 Si2O5 (OH)4] and to examine its crystal habit. Bundles of ribbons, many less than 200 A. in cross section, make up the bulk specimen of the garnierite Electron diffraction revealed the unit cell to be monoclinic. Unit cell parameters were: a, 5.33 A,; b, 9.23 A.; c, 14.96 A.; and ß, 94°441.

As part of its effort to produce cell-grade alumina from clay, the Bureau of Mines investigated the hydrogen chloride gas-sparging crystallization of aluminum chloride hexahydrate (ACH) from aluminum chloride liquor, to provide information for optimizing the crystallization operation. Four parameters important in controlling the crystallization of the aluminum chloride hexahydrate and the concentration of impurities, particularly phosphorus and magnesium, in ACH crystals are (1) aluminum chloride concentration in the feed solution to crystallization, (2) hydrogen chloride gas flow rate, (3) temperature, and (4) concentration of phosphorus and magnesium also in the feed solution. Parameters 1, 2, and 3 affect crystal formation. The combined effects are very important because the phosphorus and magnesium concentrate in the crystals during the early stages of crystal growth. Aluminum chloride hexahydrate of cell-grade purity was crystallized from saturated aluminum chloride solutions containing less than 0.003 wt-pct P205 and 0.010 wt-pct MgO. Crystallization temperatures less than 600 C decreased crystal purity.

"With a view of elucidating the role of glutathione (GSH) in the biochemical pathways of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis, we carried out electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic investigations of the chromate-GSH redox reactions. The ESR measurements, employing spin-traps, provide evidence for the involvement of the glutathione (GS•) radical, as well as an isolable Cr(V)-glutathione intermediate. These results indicater a new mechanism for the reduction of chromate by GSH in cellular environment and help understand the (unexpected increase in Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand breaks at elevated GSH levels.We report here indirect electron spin resonance (EGR evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl (GS) radical and direct evidence for a Cr(V) intermediate in the reactions of glutathione ¬(GSH) with chromate for the first time.. This work was undertaken to clarify the biochemical pathway of the reduction of chromate by GSH, since this reduction process is thought to be a critical step in the pathogenesis of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis. This follows from the literature reports which show that (a) Cr(VI)compounds have been proven to be carcinogens in laboratory animals as well as in human studies2-4, (b) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds are mutagenic 5-7, (c) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds can penetrate cell membranes 8.9 (d) the final state of Cr(VI) in cellular reductions is Cr(III)', (e) by itself chromate (or Cr(VI)) cannot be directly mutagenic since Cr(VI) is known not to interact with isolated DNA under physiological conditions 10, suggesting the significance of Cr(VI).reduction processes. One of the major reductants in cellular environments is thought to be the GSH, both outside and inside the ce11s 11-13. Other evidence for the role of GSH in the chromate toxicity is seen from recent studies showing that exposure of hamster cells to non-toxic levels of added selenite increases the levels' of GSH as well as the Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand beaks 14, and thatsuch DNA strand breaks in hepatocytes also change in direct proportion to their GSH content 15,16. These observations wereinterpreted as implying that the reduction of chromate by GSH, to some reactive intermediate is an important step in the chromatecarcinogenicity 15,16. The Spring Canyon Mine Rescue Association is a cooperative association supported jointly by five coal-mining companies located in Spring Canyon, Utah. The properties of mining companies the Carbon Fuel Co, Rains , Utah, the Liberty Coal Co. , Latuda, Utah, the Standard Coal Co. , Standardville , Utan, the Spring Canyon Coal Co. , Storrs , Utah, and the Peerless Coal Co. , Peerless , Utah about a mile apart and normally employ a total of 915 men , 733 underground 182 on the surface . and The Association was organized on July 5, 1921 , and Rudolph Clark, fomerly first - aid miner on U. S. Bureau of Mines Rescue Car 11 , was placed in charge. as manager . A board of directors made up of a representative from each of the cooperating companies (usually the mine superintendent ) is the governing body of the Association and the expenses are prorated on a basis of the production of each of the five mines . The Association maintains eight sets of Gibbs rescue apparatus and a motor truck fitted up as a combined rescue truck and ambulance . Additional apparatus are to be purchased . Standardville is the central camp in the canyon and has been made the headquarters of the Association . The apparatus are now kept and the truck housed in a small station, but plans have been prepared for a large station which will be built this summer . This new station will have a large apparatus room , a test chamber, a suitable room. for training, and a garage on the first floor, while above will be the living quarters of the manager . There is a good road through the canyon and the other camps are all within two and one -half miles of Standardville .

Increasing longwall panel dimensions, particularly face width in gassy coalbeds, may result in unexpected increases in methane emissions. To investigate this problem, continuous longwall face emission monitoring studies were conducted at two adjacent mines operating in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed, where longwall faces were to be extended from 229 to 305 m (750 to 1,000 ft). It was predicted by regression analysis of methane emissions data from 229 m (750 ft) wide longwall faces that extending faces to 305 m (1,000 ft) would increase methane emission rates by only 7 percent (0.6 m3/min (20 cfm)), to 8.6 m3/min (304 cfm) at the VP-1 Mine. In contrast, it was predicted that extending faces at the VP-3 Mine could increase methane emissions by as much as 13 percent (1.8 m3/min (65 cfm)) to 16.1 m3/min (567 cfm). The geologic and mine design factors influencing the variation in face emissions between the two mines will be discussed.

Roof screening for ground control originated with metal miners in the western United States. At first chain-link fence was used, but because it was so difficult to handle, the miners started installing a more rigid welded wire screen used in the concrete industry. Eventually coal mines in the west began to use screen, and now more and more coal operations, especially longwall mines, are installing roof screen on a regular basis. Screen use has recently increased in the Illinois basin and is now making its way to underground coal mines in the eastern U.S.

Reduce costs of recontouring surface mined land by improving bulldozer blades. Approach A specialized 48-foot-wide bulldozer blade set at an angle, a 13-foot bulldozer blade with swept-forward end sections, and a 24-foot grading bar are used in conjunction with conventional bulldozers to reduce the cost of recontouring surface mined land. How They Work The angle blade is used to do the initial and intermediate leveling of long spoil banks. It is mounted at an angle on two 410-horsepower crawler tractors in a side-by-side offset configuration, but requires only one operator since both tractors are controlled by a single set of controls. The angle blade usually begins its cycle at one end of the spoil bank where the operator fills the blade and moves forward, continuously cutting and casting the material to the repose slope. At the opposite end of the spall bank, the angle blade turns around and begins cut-ting and casting material to the opposite repose slope. This action continues until adjacent banks meet or the lateral distance from the center line of the spoil bank to the repose slope exceeds approximately 40 to 50 feet. At this distance, the sidecasting angle blade is no longer effective, and conventional bulldozers are used to do the final land shaping.

Ignition and flammability test methods were developed by the Bureau of Mines for use in the classification of flammable solids by the Department of Transportation. A rotating disk ignition apparatus and a flame-spread-rate apparatus are proposed for determining the ignitability and flammability, respectively, of most flammable solids. Extremely flammable solids, such as pyrophoric materials, are evaluated by determining their ease of spontaneous ignition in an environmental chamber at high-humidity conditions. Data are presented for various representative solids to show the reliability of the test methods for classifying the materials. A classification system is also proposed for use in government transportation regulations.

In 1943, diamond drilling by the Bureau of Mines, comprising 11 holes which totaled 1,295.6 feet, showed that the pegmatite at Black Mountain consisted of shallow lenses in interbedded biotite-quartz-schist and impure quartzite. The average thickness of the pegmatite was 9.7 feet. Mineralization had a zonal arrangement. Beryl was most abundant near the footwall contact of the pegmatite. The average estimated beryl content of the pegmatite exposed at the surface was 0.81 percent, and the highest content of any pegmatite area was 1.75 percent. Other economic minerals were scrap mica, feldspar, spodumene, and lepidolite. Representative samples of the Black Mountain deposit failed to yield high-grade boryl concentrates by straight flotation owing to the presence of considerable spodumene. By employing heavy medium separation to remove the spodumene, 75.4 percent of the. BeO wan recovered in a flotation concentrate assaying 10.4 percent BeO.

The Rambler mine is in the Douglas mining district, Albany County, Wyo. (fig. 1). The property was first operated about 1870 for gold found in the outcrop of a leached ore body. Copper and metals of the platinum group were discovered, in 1900, or soon thereafter, and intermittent mining was done until 1918, when a fire destroyed the surface plant, and the underground workings caved. The mine has since been idle. The Bureau of Mines conducted a development project on the property from October 1942 to October 1943, with a recess period between November 1942 and August 1943. Ten diamond drill holes, totaling 1,859 linear feet, were drilled on the property (fig. 2). The mine dump was sampled after preparation with a bulldozer. Assay determination and spectrographic analyses disclosed small quantities of copper and metals of the platinum group in the samples. Determinations were made on 11 samples from the diamond drill holes and 23 samples from the mine dump. The assay results and spectrographic analyses are given in tables 1 and 2. The logs of the diamond drill holes are given in an appendix to this report.

Monitoring the miner respirable quartz dust exposure for compliance with U.S. federal regulations is mandatory to protect the health of coal miners. However, there is no technique available for the direct measurement of the respirable quartz dust concentration in the mining environment. The only means to estimate the respirable quartz dust concentration is to perform an analysis of the respirable dust sample collected, which contains both coal and quartz dust as well as other mineral constituents. For samples collected at coal mines, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) utilizes the P7 method for respirable quartz analysis. The objectives of this work are to 1) evaluate the performance of the P7 method on field samples of low quartz mass loadings, 2) evaluate the magnitude of dust mass spatial variability within an enclosed cab environment, and 3) estimate the subsequent propagation of error in calculating the per. centage of quartz over a broad range of mass and quartz filter loadings at a surface coal mine. These objectives were achieved by obtaining surface coal mine dust samples over a 9-month time period in enclosed cabs of three drills and three bulldozers. By measuring weighing precision and using reasonable estimates for sampler variability, the dust mass spatial variability component was calculated by difference. The results show that 1) the P7 method can be precise and linear with quartz mass loadings as low as approximately 5 µmg of quartz, 2) the dust mass spatial variability, even within an enclosed cab environment, is the dominant factor of variability in propagation of error in estimating the quartz content of the obtained dust samples on a percentage basis, and 3) weighing precision is not a significant factor in error propagation. In addition to the enclosed cab samples, samples from eight surface coal mine drills were collected at various locations exterior to the drill cab. Significant data scatter at these outside locations strongly suggests that the ambient dust mass spatial variability has a significant effect on the propagation of error in estimating quartz content of the dust samples on a percentage basis.

This report describes a ferric chloride trap, based on formation of a low-melting sodium chloride-ferric chloride mixture of near-eutectic composition, and its use in chlorination of impure titaniferous materials. The trap is placed in the hot gas stream between the chlorination reactor and the condenser. Virtually all of the iron is removed by the trap. The condensed titanium tetrachloride is free of suspended solids and contains only a trace of iron. Four examples are given of the use of the ferric chloride trap in chlorination of impure titaniferous materials. INTRODUCTION In the Kroll process, ductile titanium metal is produced by reducing titanium tetrachloride with magnesium metal.4/ In commercial practice, titanium tetrachloride is produced by chlorinating titaniferous materials in the presence of carbon.2/ In 1957 most producers were using rutile, and virtually all plants were designed for its use. About four-fifths of the domestic consumption of rutile was imported from Australia. The Bureau of Mines, under provisions of contract DMP-116 with the General Services Administration, studied electrosmelting of domestic ilmenites and titaniferous magnetites to produce high-titanium slags with pig iron as a byproduct. Under the same contract, chlorination studies also were being made of these slags. Smelting was done at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Experiment Station, Albany, Oreg., and chlorination at the Electrometallurgical Experiment Station, Boulder City, Nev.
