This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United states was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United states Department of the Interior. This paper is a continuation of a series made in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC), Inc. The first of this series of reports presented data on motor gaso1ines sold during the winter of 1935-36, and succeeding reports described motor gasolines sold during the summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.3/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. In laboratory tests using reconstructed soil columns, rubber latex showed good sealing efficiency when applied at a rate equivalent to 4000-5000 pounds per acre. Results of field testing, however, were inconclusive. The ideal situation in which latex would coagulate in a narrow zone two to three feet below the surface by reacting with acidic or metallic constituents of the soil was not attained. Rather, the latex was deposited progressively as it passed through the soil (most of it remained in the top foot), the rate of deposition being dependent on soil structure and composition as well as on properties of the latex such as particle size and emulsion stability. Latex stability appears to be a more critical property than latex particle size in controlling penetration. Addition of excess anionic or nonionic surfactants to latex improved its penetration into the soil. A styrene-butadiene (SBR) rubber latex of 2400 Å average particle size with high mechanical stability gave the best balance of penetrating ability and sealing capacity in laboratory tests and this was confirmed in tests on a 5 x 5 foot test plot at Lanse, Pennsylvania. This latex was subsequently applied to three one-quarter-acre plots at Lanse by sprinkler irrigation, and compared to adjacent areas that were sprinkled with water only. Soil moisture measurements did not enable us to judge the effectiveness of the seal because differences between sampling positions were greater than differences between treated and untreated sections, but permeability tests showed that water flow was much slower (90-99% reduction) within the top ten inches of soil in the latex- treated sections. This sealing effectiveness was reduced after wintering. There was no deleterious effect on the vegetation as a result of sprinkling the areas with latex. A laboratory study conducted in a 5 x 5 x 5 foot box containing uniform reconstructed soil from a New Jersey source suggests that latex penetration into the soil in the field occurs mainly through natural macro openings and not through the capillaries of the soil structure. Dilute solutions of ammonium hydroxide or sodium carbonate (with no latex present) were found to seal effectively in laboratory soil columns as well as in field applications. However, since these chemicals are water soluble, the seal is temporary. Raw material costs of latex at the application rates used in the field testing are in the order of $1000 per acre. This report contains information on the relation between and precision or reproducibility of counts (light-and dark-field) of the dust in liquid from simultaneous impinger, midget-impinger, electric-precipitator, and filter-paper samples. The impinger was the main sampler used from about 1922 to 1939 by industrial hygienists in the United States for collecting samples of unhygienic dust from the atmospheric environment of workers. The midget-impinger, a small modification of the preceding impinger described in 1937, has been the sampler used most since about 1939. Electric precipitators5/6/ have been used to a limited extent, mainly by the Bureau of Mines in the laboratory, for obtaining results comparable to impinger results. A filter-paper sampler for obtaining results comparable to impinger results has been described by Brown. All these samplers have a high collecting efficiency for particles larger than 1 micron in diameter revealed by the usual light-field counting procedure. However, their collecting efficiencies are quite variable for the smaller particles revealed by the dark-field counting procedure used in this study. Published information on the relation between the results of these samplers is limited and scattered. Summaries of some of this information are given in this report along with some previously unpublished information.

Canister-type gas masks have become an essential part of the equipment of many industries not only for use in emergencies, but also in performing normal operations of industrial processes and procedures, particularly where ventilation is not practically or economically feasible. They are also used widely for enhancing safety of operations which previous to the development of gas masks had been performed in harmful atmospheres. Since the inception of industrial gas masks the Bureau of Mines has been actively engaged in endeavoring to increase the efficiency and safety of these devices and this bureau has become a source of advice to manufacturers in producing devices of good quality and to industry in the proper selection and use of these devices. In order to give first-hand information and keep current with the demands and needs of industry it is necessary to perform investigations from time to time. This report deals with tests of certain types of commercial gas-mask canisters for protection against mercury vapor.

This report describes apparatus and procedure used for determining the vapor pressure of aviation gasoline in surveys of commercial aviation-gasoline characteristics made by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel and Equipment Committee of the Coordinating Research Council, Inc. (CFR-CRC). The method is a modification of the Reid method, in which a mercury manor is substituted for the Bourdon-type gage of the Reid method. The method was used in earlier surveys made by the National Bureau of Standards in cooperation with the CFR-CRC, and was used in the Bureau of Mines surveys at the request of the cooperating organizations. It is designed for special research problems? particularly in vapor-lock studies, which require a precision greater than obtainable by the Reid vapor pressure method. A repeatability of + 0.01 p.s.i. average deviation from the mean may be obtained by method.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,857 samples, representing the products of 103 companies. The samples were collected during June, July, and August 1955. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

[Stimulative methods of production, whereby the total recovery of oil from natural reservoirs is increased, have come into considerable prominence during the past 15 years. In many oil-producing areas properties considered ready for abandonment by ordinary producing methods have responded to some form of stimulation, and their economic lives have been extended. The stimulative method having widest application is the injection of air or gas into the reservoir formations through selected input wells and is commonly referred to as the ?gas drive." As a result of the many successful "gas-drive" operations operators are depending more and more upon this method for increasing the ulti¬mate recovery of oil from their properties. A number of factors influence the efficiency of different gases as propulsive agents in recovering oil from sands. Gases of high density and viscosity shrew a tendency toward a slightly higher efficiency than those of lower density and viscosity. The solubility of the gas in the oil also affects the efficiency of oil recovery. Not only does dissolved gas decrease the viscosity of the oil, but dissolved gas that expands from solution in the oil tends to increase the effectiveness of a "gas drive." Interfacial tension between the oil and the gas and its effect upon the recovery of oil by gas injection are factors of which little is known. Dr. A. G. Loomis5 expressed the opinion that interfacial tension probably plays a minor role in the recovery of oil, except under conditions that produce a gas-oil foam. In connection with the above physical properties that influence the action of a pressure medium, control of the injected volume of the pressure medium is perhaps the major factor. The rate ofg;as injection determines to a great extent the amount of slippage and the resulting efficiency of the operation. The importance of volume control is realized when one considers that frequently it is the only factor that is under complete control of the operator.]

The samples tested were taken from commercial shipments and have been selected to represent the principal coal producing areas of the country . Due to combining the analytical results from two separate surveys , values for the four elements are not available for all samples .

U.S. supply and demand data for dry natural gas by source, form, and major consuming sectors--within and between States and defined regions--were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. State-by-State quantitative data are provided for the natural gas industry that can be arranged into regional groupings and used to determine regional flow patterns. The tables show the derivation of the total supply of gas available for consumption from total marketed production. The tables also report the distribution of the supply among the major consuming sectors (household and commercial, industrial, transportation, and electricity generation, utilities). The summarized data show an increase in the absolute demand for natural gas in all regions for the period 1960-65, although the relative posit ions of the various subregions, with respect to national consumption, remained about the same. To enable comparison of data on dry natural gas with data on other energy sources, quantities in terms of million cubic feet were converted to British thermal unit (Btu) equivalents.

During the period 1937-40 and until peacetime research was superseded in 1941 by wartime activities , the junior author was engaged in studies regarding the relative efficiency of operating methods in quarries producing crushed stone for mineral aggregates . The results of some of these studies were published as reports of investigations in 1939 and 1940 ; / others were discontinued due to war demands on personnel and time . The published reports discussed the efficiency of particular quarry operations with respect to the time consumed and without reference to costs or mechanical factors . • At the time , the field data were collected for the published reports other data were collected relative to the relationship of the numerous variable factors inherent in the operation of a churn drill to the ability of the drill to produce blast holes . The churn drill is essentially a crusher and depends. for its performance upon the foot-pounds of energy it can impart to the cutting edge of its bit . The gravity stamp mill , so well-known in western gold mines , is essentially the same type of crusher . The ratio of foot- pounds necessary to crush the rock , to the total theoretical energy developed by the falling churn- drill tools , affords a good means of evaluating the efficiency of the tool . This does not include to tal over-all efficiency involving the mechanical equipment of the drill itself or its power unit .

This report describes a mobile laboratory designed and constructed by the Bureau of Mines in 1950 to meet the needs of an experimental blasting research program. The laboratory has facilities for making; film recordings of 16 simultaneous transient electrical signals over a broad range of amplitude, frequency, and duration. The signals are recorded with specially designed oscilloscopes and high-speed drum cameras. Each of the 16 channels records on a separate strip of 35-millimeter film by using interchangeable input units, transducers having different sensitivities and output impedances can be accommodated. The laboratory can be used to record both steady-state and transient phenomena originating as electrical voltages or capable of being converted to electrical voltages by appropriate transducers. Thus, the laboratory can, be used in studying various types of vibration problems or high-speed phenomena, such as ground and building vibrations, machinery vibrations, airborne vibrations, electrical-circuit switching phenomena, millisecond timing, and seismic phenomena occurring when rock is broken by explosives.

The thickness of the coal seam is one of the more important items influencing the productivity and general overall efficiency of operation of a coal mine. The average thickness of coal seams mined in the United States has changed very little in the past 40 years. The first measurement of thickness of bituminous coal and lignite seams was made for 1920, when the average thickness was 5.3 feet.2 The average thickness for later years was as follows: 1945, 5.4 feet; 1950, 5.3 feet; 1955, 5.2 feet; 1960, 5.3 feet; and 1965, 5.2 feet.3 Table 1 includes data on number and production of bituminous coal and lignite mines classified by 1-foot intervals of seam thickness mined in 1920, 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960, and 1965. Though bituminous coal and lignite are mined today from seams of exceedingly variable thickness--less than 2 feet to more than 50 feet--a large majority of the production, 62 percent in 1965, came from seams 3 to 6 feet thick. This is not surprising since the coal seam of moderate thickness presents the least mining difficulties.

Batch and continuous - circuit flotation , leaching , precipitation , and electrodeposition studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine optimum conditions for treatment of complex mercury - antimony sulfide and mercury- arsenic sulfide ores and concentrates . On the Red Devil ore sample over 95 percent of both the mercury and antimony sulfides were recovered in a flotation concentrate containing 35.6 percent mercury and 21.0 percent antimony . By selective flotation a mercury concentrate containing 71.0 percent mercury and 2.9 percent antimony was obtained with a mercury recovery of 90.4 percent . Leaching results show that , with 150 grams per liter of sodium sulfide and 50 grams per liter of sodium hydroxide , 95 to 99 percent of the mercury , antimony , and arsenic sulfides could be extracted from the concentrates treated . Sodium hydroxide reagent consumption was based on the sulfides generated in the dissolution of the sulfide minerals and on the method of metal recovery used . Selective leaching of the antimony and arsenic sulfides with potassium sulfide dissolved more than 95 percent of either of these two sulfides and 0.5 to 5 percent of the mercury sulfide present . Methods for recovering mercury and antimony from solution were electrodeposition of mercury followed by electrodeposition of antimony , aluminum precipitation of both mercury and antimony , or antimony precipitation of mercury followed by antimony electrodeposition . The Bureau of Mines constructed a fully automated pilot plant facility to study the hydraulic transportation of solids through a lock hopper feeder system. An equation for the energy requirements to transport coarse solids hydraulically proved applicable to this system. Optimum velocities were obtained for limestone, mine refuse, and bituminous coal. The experimental data, calculations, and graphs show the effect of velocity, specific gravity, and solids concentration on head loss and power requirements. Other data were obtained and evaluated to determine the effect of particle size on head loss. Results also are given for (a) tests using friction reducing polymers; (b) tests using seven test sections of steel alloy pipe to determine their wear characteristics; (c) tests to determine spatial segregation of moving particles; and (d) tests to determine the effect of shape, size, and specific gravity on particle velocity in a horizontal pipeline. The lock hopper feeder system was found practical for continuous hydraulic transportation of the material types and size ranges tested.

The cleaning of fine coal, particularly for metallurgical use, is receiving greater attention. An increase in the proportion of fine coal in the run-of-mine product has been created by changes in mining practice, and a concur-rent deterioration in the quality of the fines has occurred because of more widespread full-seam mining. These two factors, augmented by the depletion of premium beds of metallurgical coal in some areas and the resulting shift to "dirtier" beds, are providing the impetus for adoption of improved cleaning techniques. For example, froth flotation, which has been used for years in a few preparation plants, now is gaining more rapidly in acceptance. Similarly, the dense-medium cyclone, which is used widely in Europe for making difficult separations, recently has been introduced to the United States. Regardless of the cleaning process employed, the finer sizes of coal can be treated with maximum effectiveness only when they are removed from the run-of-mine product and treated separately. No present process can treat the full range of sizes together with complete effectiveness. Flotation is applicable only to the coal finer than a top size ranging between 14-and 48-mesh, and cyclones require removal of all material finer than 0.5 to 0.3 mm. from the feed. Thus, the trend toward more-effective cleaning of the fine coal imposes the attendant problem of fine screening. Whereas in the past there was little need to screen finer than about l/4-in., present developments indicate that fine screening will become increasingly prevalent.

The Bureau of Mines, under the sponsorship of the Space Nuclear Propulsion Office, conducted a laboratory-scale hydrogen safety study which determined several combustion characteristics of hydrogen diffusion flames. Experiments show that ambient air may enter the top of a hydrogen flare stack when the hydrogen flow is low. A new concept, supported by photographic evidence, predicts that diffusion flames burning in air on a wide, upright pipe (stack) and fed with slow, upward flows of buoyant gas will induce a downward flow of air along the walls of the pipe that can support combustion within the pipe. Predicted flamedip limits agree roughly with experimental values determined on 6-, 12-, and 18-inch-diameter stacks and increase with increasing stack diameter. Measurements were made of the limiting flow at which a hydrogen diffusion flame blows out in still air. By means of an empirical application of the critical boundary 8 velocity gradient concept, these data lead to a blowout limit of about 10 reciprocal seconds for a hydrogen diffusion flame. Burning rates of large hydrogen diffusion flames ranging from about 0.03 to 1 ft/sec were used to predict approximate flame heights on flare stacks. Temperatures of larger hydrogen diffusion flames up to about 3,600° F were observed, but the most representative value appears to be about 2,600° F. It was found that crosswinds do not strip significant amounts of unburned hydrogen from its diffusion flame and that water-cooled flare stacks are not likely to be damaged when flame is blown back into them by opposing winds.

The Pittsburgh carbonization laboratory of the Bureau of Mines has determined the expansion or contraction of more than 300 coking coals in a modified Bethlehem-type sole-heated expansion tester. Information on the actions of coals or blends of coals when coked is extremely valuable to operators of commercial-scale coke ovens. Coals that expand abnormally or beyond expectations can cause extensive damage to coke ovens and result in costly shutdowns and repairs. Although test results for many of the coals have been given in various Bureau of Mines publications, considerable information was not published. Thus, it is the purpose of this report to furnish coal operators and the coking industry with a current appraisal of the expanding properties of all coals tested by the Bureau before September 1, 1958. These data should be useful in the normal long range planning of coal and coke production and will be essential if the demand for coking coals increases abnormally or when reserves of higher grade coals are depleted.

The Bureau of Mines developed equations to determine the relationship of yields and products obtained from BM-AGA carbonization in 13-and l8-inch-diameter retorts. The developed equations indicate that results of carbonization in l8-inch-diameter retorts can be predicted from results obtained with l3-inch-diameter retorts.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted considerable research to improve life support technology for underground mining applications. This proceedings volume presents several new developments that may help increase the chances of mine workers in surviving underground disasters. Several papers address the performance of present self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's) and provide proposed guidelines for the design and testing of a second-generation SCSR. Improvements In the safety and effectiveness of mine rescue and recovery operations are described, including the design of a low-profile rescue breathing apparatus and a rescue team helmet.
