In another paper the writer has described an investigation in which the forms of sulphur in coke were determined and described. Coke was found to contain four characteristic forms of sulphur- namely, ferrous sulphide, sulphates, ad- sorbed free sulphur, and sulphur held in solid solution in the carbon. While the coke is still in the oven, only two forms of sulphur are present namely, the ferrous sulphide and the sulphur in solid solution in the carbon. During the quenching, however, the sulphur of the coke is subjected to considerable oxidation, a portion of the ferrous sulphide being oxidized to free sulphur and sulphates, while the solid solution form remains unchanged. The coke, however, loses no sulphur during this process, since the free sulphur which is formed ie retained by the coke in an adsorbed form. Since this oxidation of the ferrous sulphide took place so easily, an inves- tigation was undertaken to determine whether this property could not be taken ad- vantage of in some industrial process for the desulphurization of coke. Although it is true that such a roasting process would not touch the solid-solution form of sul- phur, still the removal of the ferrous sulphide sulphur would undoubtedly benefit the coke from the standpoint of the metallurgist. This improvement in the coke would result not only from the decrease in total sulphur, but also from the large decrease in the ferrous sulphide, which is responsible for the contamination of the iron in the upper part of the blast-furnace. The de sulphurization of coke by roasting in air it a new idea, but dates back to the earliest days of coke manufacture. In 1871, Philipparts published the results of some work done by him on the de sulphurization of coke by air, as well as a review of the results of earlier investigators. In the se earlier experiments, nothing was known of the forms in which the sulphur existed in the coke, while the temperature measurements were only approximate, so that altogether the results were not very conclusive nor complete. The de sulphurisation figures given by the se early investigators generally showed a low efficiency for the process, but some extraordinary results were claimed by certain inventors. In the light of our new knowledge concerning the coke sulphur, it seemed to be important enough to warrant investigation.

"IntroductionInhalation of crystalline silica is often associated with the development of pulmonary disease (Ziskind et al., 1976). Recently, it has been proposed that freshly sheared silica .may have surface properties that make it more reactive with lung tissue than aged silica, and that this unique reactivity ·of freshly crushed silica enhances its pathogenicity. A recent study in our laboratory strongly supports this theory (Vallyathan, et al., 1988a; 1988b). We found that grinding of silica cleaves bonds in a silica tetrahedral lattice generating reactive free radicals sites on the surface of the silica particles. The presence of surface radicals on freshly ground silica was monitored by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The ESR signal generated from fresh silica in air is characteristic of Si-0 and Si radicals. Evidence, i.e., the ESR signal after the addition of a spin trap (DMPO) and its sensitivity to ethanol, indicates that these silicon-based surface radicals can react with water to form hydroxyl radicals (OH). Results also indicate that these surface radicals make fresh silica more cytotoxic than aged silica; i.e., fresh silica causes more membrane damage as evidenced by hemolysis and lipid peroxidation. Therefore, the presence of reactive sites on the surface of freshly cleaved silica may play a significant role in its pathogenicity.If surface· free radicals are related to cytotoxicity, then screening dusts for the existence of such radicals may predict their relative pathogenicity. Since an ESR spectrometer is not available to many laboratories, the objective of this study was to develop a quick and simple technique to monitor the existence of reactive surface sites on dust. The technique chosen was the measurement of chemiluminescence using a liquid scintillation counter; i.e., an instrument which·would be accessible to most investigators."

"The microscopic work described below was engaged in primarily into ascertain the approximate proportions in which the copper sulphides existed in the ore examined, and by a comparison of the results obtained from a study of both head are tailing samples to supply data which might be of value in treating the ore by flotation. Incidentally, the physical characteristics and association of the sulphides were noted in order to determine the possible relation or bearing of these features on the present conditions of treatment. Since the copper in the ore occurred as three distinct sulphide minerals - chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and bornite each containing copper in different proportions, there appeared to be little or no possibility of obtaining the desired information by chemical methods of determination.Type of material examinedThe material examined was in the crushed condition and was said to be representative of the flotation feed or heads and the resulting tailing. No hand samples of the ore were examined nor any account taken of the physical condition and association of the minerals in place, because the possible value of the analytical results depended on conditions as they existed in the crushed ore. As the problems under consideration dealt only with the sulphide minerals, especially those of copper, the products from screen sizing were concentrated by hand panning and the gangue discarded. The concentrate obtained consisted almost entirely of the sulphide minerals, since the panning had been very carefully done. The object of this procedure was to obtain a sufficient quantity of high-grade sulphide material, from the sample of each screen size selected for examination, to permit its being so prepared for examination as to be representative of the physical characteristics exhibited by a large number of sulphide grains from each respective size, In the tests and investigations carried on by the company' treating the ore the following sizes had been used in tabulating data and basing conclusions:+48, +65, +100, +150, +200, and -200. These same sizes were used in the microscopic investigation, since the results obtained thereby could be most readily utilized for comparison with the results obtained in previous experimental work, together with deductions based on actual concentration of the ore on a commercial scale."

The Simon & Coles manganese deposit in Sherman Valley, Bedford County, Pa., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines during the fall of 1942. Two churn-drill holes; 65 and 75 feet deep were bored, and 8 channel samples were taken. Manganese occurs at this property in the form of psilomelane and manganiferous iron as replacement of the red sandy shale of the Much Chunk-formation. Two cars of manganese ore had been shipped by the owners in 1940, of which one averaged 10.9 percent manganese and the other 21.3 percent manganese. One car of hand-sorted manganese ore that averaged-45 percent manganese was shipped in 1942.

The increasing trend toward use of continuous-type mining machines created a significant dust problem in coal mining, which resolved itself into three categories: Visibility at face, deposition on return airways, and the potential health hazard. The control measures applicable to these conditions and studied or developed from 1955 through 1957 are summarized and reviewed in this report. Other important problems brought into focus during the same period were radiation exposure in uranium mining and high temperature and humidity. Although temperature and atmospheric pressure alone may not be contributing factors in the incidence of silicosis, the few mining companies who operate under the extremes of these conditions are dust conscious and keep dust-control engineers on their operating staffs.

This report describes a laboratory investigation of the effectiveness of low-pressure steam and a steam-water spray sequence for the collection of airborne respirable (<10 µm) coal dust. Comparison of present results to previous results obtained with water spray alone indicates that the use of steam in a steam-spray sequence increases the collection efficiency by about 14 percent over that obtained by water spray alone. However, the use of steam to collect airborne dust requires cooling the steam-dust mixture in order to achieve condensation of the steam, and steam does not appear to be an attractive approach for collecting airborne dust in underground coal mining operations.

This report covers the character, properties, origin, occurrence, and uses of the traprocks and describes briefly the methods and equipment employed in quarrying and preparing them for market. Production of traprock occupies an important place in industry. In 1960 the output in the form of crushed stone reached nearly 58 million tons valued at $87 million. Traprocks are also shaped into blocks of dimension stone for monuments, building construction and decoration, and specialized products such as surface plates.

A gas volumetric method was developed for determining metallic aluminum at the 0.01-to 0.3-percent level in 100-gram samples of recycled glass. The method is based on the measurement of the change in gas volume produced by the reaction 2 Al + 2 NaOH + 2 H2O ? 2 NaAl02 + 3 H2 using a simple apparatus assembled from readily available glassware. Apart from sampling errors, the precision of the method is within ±5 percent. A minor modification of the apparatus would extend the method to larger samples or samples of higher metallic aluminum content. Metallic iron and metallic zinc do not interfere at the concentrations found in recycled glass recovered from incinerator residues.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 requires coal mine operators to sample accurately the amount of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere. A technique approved for such sampling employs a 10 mm nylon cyclone followed by a membrane filter (nominal pore size ????= 5 µm) and a pump. The pump is required to provide a flow rate of 2.0 ± 0.1 liters per minute. Calibrations have yielded a range of flow rates (1.4 to 2.8 1pm) at which the cyclone should be operated to remove the non-respirable portion of the dust. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the performance of the 10 mm nylon cyclone at flow rates of 1.8 and 2.0 1pm using a polydisperse coal dust aerosol. The penetration characteristics of the cyclone were to be compared to the United States Atomic Energy Commission&apos;s respirable dust standard. The effect of relative humidity on cyclone penetration characteristics was also to be observed.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of common impurities, that is, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and iron, on the Brinell hardness of electrolytic titanium. On a weight basis, nitrogen had the greatest hardening effect, followed by oxygen, carbon, and iron in order. The hardening effects of oxygen and carbon were almost identical up to a concentration of approximately 0.1 percent by weight. Above this concentration, the relative hardening effect of carbon decreased rapidly, possibly because of its limited solid solubility in a-titanium. Hardness vs. composition curves for both oxygen and nitrogen were essentially straight lines over the range of Brinell hardness numbers (B.h.n.) covered in the investigation. The hardness of titanium was also determined as a function of the percentage of impurity atoms. On this basis, iron in concentrations up to 0.17 atomic percent had a greater hardening effect than either oxygen or carbon. INTRODUCTION Determination of the as-cast hardness of arc-melted titanium is a method of quality control widely used in industry. Numerous studies4/ have been made of the effect of impurities on the hardness obtained by this method. However, most of them have been based on the use of either iodide titanium or commercially pure Kroll sponge (B.h.n. >90), as a starting material.

As part of its research program on secondary metal refining, the Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a fast method for determining aluminum, iron, copper, cadmium, and lead in zinc-base alloys. The new method is intended for use by trained technicians in laboratories with inexpensive equipment. It can be used either in the analytical laboratories of the many small plants that are characteristic of the secondary metals industry or in laboratories engaged in basic research to improve refining processes. A complete analysis for the foregoing elements can be made in less than 3 hours from a single sample in solution. The method is especially helpful when a small amount of sample is available. Aluminum and iron are determined spectrophotometrically and the other elements polarographically. The new method is now being used for control analysis in metallurgical research, and the results compare favorably with previously used spectrographic methods. Luke and Braun4/ described a photometric method for the determination of aluminum in zinc diecasting alloys in which the aluminum was complexed with Aluminon reagent (ammonium salt of aurintricarboxylic acid), forming a red lake. An adaptation of this method was used for determining aluminum. Beers law is obeyed between 0.01 and 0.06 milligram of aluminum.

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. The selection of coal beds in Westmoreland County for coking tests was based, in part, on estimates of the coal reserves by Dowd,3/ who estimated the recoverable reserves in beds 28 inches or more thick, in thousands of tons, as follows: [ ]

Objective To identify techniques to reduce the probability of gob gas explosions. Background In the last 6 years, seven explosions of methane and/or coal dust occurred within worked-out, sealed areas (gobs) of underground U.S. coal mines. These explosions, believed to have been started by lightning, destroyed many mine seals and caused much damage external to the sealed area. Three of these gob gas explosions occurred in one mine in Alabama over a 3-year period. Fortunately, the explosion forces and the toxic gases that vented from the sealed gob area did not cause fatalities or injuries, but they destroyed several large seals. If miners had been inspecting or working near these areas, the potential for serious injury and/or death would have been high. The United Mine Workers of America and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requested that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) help identify the mechanisms for lightning penetration into the gob and recommend ways to reduce the probability of occurrence of future explosions from such lightning penetrations into sealed areas of underground coal mines. Because three of the explosions occurred in a single mine, special attention was focused on these particular explosions. The first occurred in April 1994 in a sealed area, which enclosed about 1.35square miles of abandoned workings (gob). This explosion destroyed 3 of the 38 seals that surrounded the gob. These seals were less than 2,000 ft away from three 4.5-in-diam steel-cased test wells that extended from the surface into the mine entry. At the time of the explosion, the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN)verified 12 lightning strikes within 10 miles of the mine, including several above the gob. After the 1994 explosion, the damaged seals were rebuilt using an acceptable seal design capable of with standing a 20-psi explosion, as required by 30 CFR 75.335. On January 26,1996, a second gob explosion destroyed five more cementitious pumpable seals less than 2,000 ft away from those destroyed in 1994and even closer to the steel-cased wells. The NLDN verified72 lightning strikes in the area of this second gob explosion. Compressive strength analyses of fragments from the destroyed seals showed that strengths ranged from 11 to 138 psi, with an average of83 psi. This is over 100 psi below the minimum 200-psi compressive strength requirement for cementitious pumpable seals. These seals were again replaced. On July 9, 1997, the third and most violent explosion occurred in the same vicinity of the last two explosions. Three more cementitious pumpable seals were destroyed, including one newer seal that exceeded the minimum 200-psi compressive strength requirement. "In matte smelting of copper it has been established that the sulphpr present will combine with copper as long as the latter is present, and that thereafter it will combine with iron. The Cu-Fe ratio in the matte is determined by the Cu-S ratio, presumably owing to the much greater affinity of copper for sulphur or, expressed thermodynamically, the greater stability of copper sulphide in contact with silicate slag. Now, the work of Fournet and of Schütz, which is quoted in many elementary metallurgical texts, indicates that manganese ranks ahead of copper in its affinity for sulphur. Hence, we might expect that manganese could be concentrated from its admixture with iron. Compounds by matte smelting, and Rotts / has patented such a process. This greater affinity of manganese or sulphur is used to advantage in iron metallurgy, also, in which it is well-known that sulphur will combine with manganese and separate from metallic iron as manganese sulphide. Manganese sulphide,however, is quite soluble in silicate slags. 5/ The loss of manganese in slag in any attempted matte smelting is therefore great.If this solubility of manganese sulphide is slag is a physical one and the reaction MnO + FeS MnS + FeOIs substantially complete, then it might be expected that the addition of copper sulphide, which is almost entirety insoluble in slag, would serve to extract the manganese sulphide with the formation of a manganese-copper matte on the other hand, if an equilibrium exists in the above reaction, a copper sulphide layer would displace that equilibrium in one direction or the other, according to whether iron sulphide or manganese sulphide were more soluble in the matter layer."

A Helix Pressure Gauge to Indicate roof bolt loads was designed, fabricated and field tested. The gauge indicated loads between 3,000 and 15,000 pounds with a ± ten per cent error. The coat of fabrication of the gauge was estimated to be $3.39 including an assumed overhead and profit per indicator for a series production of 5,000 unite. The unit can be read on a bolt to within ± 1,000 pounds load from a distance of twenty feet.

In 1925 the Park Utah Consolidated Mines Co., after several years of experimental work, installed a system for signalling from cages which has been operating efficiently and with low upkeep costs for the post 19 years. The system was adopted for a large western metal mine but was later abandoned be arse of the constantly shifting shaft alinement. Recently the system has been studied and probably will be put into service at two other large mines. One of the principal reasons wry the system has not boon adopted more widely has been the lack of adequate details both as to the desirability of having such a system and as to its construction and operation. Previous signaling, systems contained undesirable features, such as charged bare wires extending the full length of the shaft. Under the direction of O. N. Friendly, then general superintendent of the Judge Mining & Smelting Co., the present system, entailing the use of a samll current at low voltage, was gradually developed. Many of the refinements in the system wore contributed by Leonard Wilson, consulting electrical engineer, Salt Lake City, Utah.

SCOPE AND APPLICATION The rules cover the installation and use of electrical equipment in coal mines.- For generating stations, substations, lines, and equip¬ment aboveground, reference is made to existing rules covering such locations, viz, the National Electrical Code and the National Electrical Safety Code and any existing State or municipal regulations. The purpose of the rules is to set forth methods for safe electrical installation. In preparing the rules five basic measures for safe¬guarding the use of electricity in mines have been followed, viz 1. Remove the contributory causes of accidents or danger. 2. Remove from the vicinity of electrical apparatus all elements susceptible to the influence of electricity. 3. Keep the electric current where it belongs, if possible; if not, limit the area of its activity by protective devices. 4. Use a. large factor of safety in the selection, installation, and in¬ spection of equipment. 5. Have full control of the operation of electrically driven machines. "The diesel particulate matter (DPM), a constituent of the diesel engine exhausts, is known to be a potential carcinogen. 1- 3 Consequently, suitable methods to control/eliminate DPM have ·been under investigation in recent years. The DPM can be controlled by using fibrous ceramic traps. However, clogging of traps by DPM requires the impractical periodic trap replacement. Following the recent work by Garner and Dent,4,5 we are investigating the in situ use of microwaves to regenerate the ceramic traps, thereby eliminating the trap replacement step in this process. The use of microwaves instead of conventional heating for trap regeneration has the advantage of selective heating of the DPM instead of the trap, if the trap absorbs insignificant microwave power relative to the DPM. Also, the oxidation characteristics of the DPM are needed to understand fully this regeneration process.The rate of energy absorption P per unit volume of a sample is given byP = wE"" |Eo|2 • (1 )where w is the angular frequency, |E0|2 is the intensity of the microwave radiation, and E” is the imaginary part of the dielectric constant (E = E’ + iE”) . Thus measurements of E11 for DPM and ceramic trap material are needed to determine their capacities for microwave absorption. In this paper, we report these measurements carried out at · a frequency of 8.7 GHz. Following microwave absorption, the DPM is expected to oxidize. The oxidation characteristics of the DPM have been investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of the evolved gases CO2 and CO and using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Finally, some information on the structure of carbon in DPM has emerged from the analysis of its x-ray diffraction spectra. Results of these experiments are reported in the following pages."

The principal goal of the Oil-Shale Mining Division is to develop the most economical methods and practices for mining oil shale. Experimental work in the mine has not progressed far enough to conduct full-scale breaking tests; therefore, mining season - to October 31, 1945, has been confined largely to problems connected with drilling cost oil shale. Calculations have indicated that commercial production will result in breaking the oil shale; the largest individual turn will be for drilling. This paper is a report on the progress of phase two of drilling research to date; it outlines the development of a successful hard-surfaced rock bit for drilling oil shale.
