The purpose of the research described in this report was to develop techniques for using ilmenite from domestic deposits for the production of titanium tetrachloride. The research was done by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the General Services Administration under contract DMP-116, Utilization of Domestic Ilmenite. Bench-scale continuous chlorination of an Idaho ilmenite containing 27.9 percent titanium and 35.6 percent iron yielded a crude titanium tetrachloride suitable for purification and for the production of titanium metal and pigment. A summary of the results of 380 hours of operation showed that 82.4 percent of the titanium was chlorinated, with 92.5 percent utilization of chlorine. The construction- of a. quartz tube chlorinator 4-inches in diameter and 24 inches long is described with the necessary details of operation.

"This paper presents an analysis of fragment size distribution and characteristics of fracture surface in coal cutting using a rotary coal cutting simulator. Coal cutting by a drum type continuous miner was simulated in the laboratory. A series of tests along both the face and butt cleat direction of coal under different operating and in-situ conditions were performed. In each experiment the cut surface was photographed microscopically and the coal cuttings were collected and sized. Data were used to show how and to what extent various parameters effect size distribution of the coal cutting and how this correlates with the characteristics of the fracture surface. This study resulted in establishing a number of distinct correlations between the size distribution and fracture surface. These correlations were primarily based on the degree of interaction between adjacent bits and the amount of bit-coal interaction taking place on the cutting path. Some of the major results of this study are as follows:Zones of bit-coal interactions proved vital toward understanding the effect the conical bit has on the fragmentation process. This in turn led to the identification of areas which are responsible for the production of fines and generation of respirable dust.The various parameters employed in the coal cutting experiments which showed a strong effect on the coal fragment size distribution were: bit type, bit spacing, depth of cut, in-situ stresses, and cleat orientation. Bit angle and cutting head velocity exhibited the least effect and no correlation was established.From this study it is obvious that the key to achieving efficient coal fragmentation is to limit the degree of bit-coal interaction that takes place throughout the bit path while causing maximum interaction between adjacent bits. Accomplishing this not only increases the percentage of large fragments produced but limits the amount of secondary crushing that takes place in the bit path thus resulting in decreasing fines and consequently, the amount of respirable dust generated.Over 2,000 continuous mining machines (introduced in the 1950's) equipped with conical bits or point attach bits account for well over half of the United States' production from underground coal mines. Today, competition in the coal industry has increased, due mainly to coal market conditions and legal restrictions, thus placing an emphasis upon increasing production, efficiency and health/safety of the workers. Mine operators are always interested in finding the most efficient performance of continuous mining machinery to produce the largest amount of size of coal at the lowest cost. An increase of fine material sent to the cleaning plant can seriously overload the plant to the extent that plant efficiencies deteriorate significantly (1). Also, the difficulty and expense of cleaning very small particles often cannot be done economically and thus, thousands of tons of coal are sent to the refuse pile because of costly or ineffective cleaning facilities. It has been said, ""the efficient extraction of coal or rock implies breakage into a size range that contains a minimum quantity of very small sizes"" (2). All known fragmentation theories concur that more fragmentation requires more energy (3). This study was undertaken to provide a more adequate knowledge of the chemistry of the sulfide volatilization process for recovery of tin from low-grade Bolivian ores. The investigation was partly supported by the Department of State under its program for scientific cooperation with South American republics. The results of this investigation demonstrate the conditions under which cassiterite (Sn02) may be converted to stannous sulfide by reaction with pyrite or sulfur vapor, Quantitative data are given on the rate of sulfidization and on the vapor pressure of stannous sulfide.

Through the development of manufacturing processes whereby ethylene glycol can be made on a large scale; ethylene glycol dinitrate is now being used in high explosives (dynamites and permissible explosives) by some manufacturers as a low-freezing ingredient of the "explosive oil" instead of such compounds as nitropolyglycerin and nitrosubstitution compounds. The amount of ethylene glycol dinitrate being used constitutes 25 to 50 per cent of the oil. The purpose of this report is to give the results of toots, to determine the effect on the safety and physical properties of permissible explosives of subsituating 25 peg cent of ethylene glycol dinitrate for an equal amount of nitroglycerin or a mixture of nitroglycerin and nitropolglycerin.

Mine operators and managers for a number of years have known that the maintenance of health among the workers has an appreciable financial value, In order to maintain the health, it has been found ne cessery to imow; 1. The health hazards existing in the industry as a whole and the specific hazard in the individual mine. 2. The physical condition of applicants for employment as well as that of the old employees. This can be determined only by systematic physical examination of all applicants and of regular employees at intervals of at least once a year thereafter. 3. All cases of sickness that occur among the workers. No operator or manager, or personnel, medical, or safety organization can control or prevent sickness without knowing where, when, and under what conditions the sickness actually occurs. In order to obtain information as to the hazards of industry, investigations have been and are being made of the effects of the condi- tions both in the field under usual working practices and in the laboratory. In the field several factors are generally present which affect the health. The effect of these factors may be determined by studying each of them separately in the laboratory. However, both the field and the laboratory studies are limited in value in that such studies usually have been made over a comparatively short period. While we have some information as to their immediate effect, we do not know to what extent extreme heat, humidity, the presence of dust or other health hazards are the cause of disability. Mortality statistics are probably the most easily available indices as to the hazards of industry. As an example, a study of such statistics among coal miners of Indiana shows a marked increase in the death rate in 1918.

Forced-air cooling of cold-mold arc furnaces for melting zirconium and similar metals has been investigated and found to be practical from the stand-point of heat transfer. It is believed that this technique offers a significant reduction in explosion hazard from that inherent in water cooling, the current industrial practice. A copper crucible, with longitudinal, integral-type fins and with an outer jacket to confine the airstream, appears to be the best general design for air-cooled operation. Cutting the fins into short segments and bending the segments to produce a herringbone effect increased the airstream's turbulence and was found, on test, to increase the heat transfer up to 35 percent.

A method of error analysis has been applied to the location technique of non-linear least squares iterative inversion in order to evaluate the resolving power of several seismic array configurations with various assumed earth models and errors and inaccuracies in arrival times. The results obtained demonstrate that lateral accuracies of location are improved significantly when the depth of the miner is known. Lateral location to within 100 feet appears achievable in many instances. If it is possible to refine earth models significantly beyond what has normally been assumed in this work by the use of on-site data, or if the mine is shallow (300 feet or less), accuracies of-about 30 feet or so may be attainable. Inaccuracies in earth models of about 5% are found to contribute much more heavily to these location inaccuracies than errors of a few milliseconds in picking arrival times; however, arrival time errors of 15-20 ms or above will dominate these model inaccuracies. The expected accuracy of location is found to fall off very rapidly as the miner moves outside the array. The strength of this effect depends markedly upon the geometry of the array configuration and can be reduced by careful design. Also, as the size of the array is increased, expected location errors within the array are not altered much, but continue to match the error associated with the smaller array over a larger area (assuming that all stations can still pick up the miner's signals). Better location accuracy, especially with respect to depth control is achievable in an earth where the velocity is depth-dependent (increasing with depth) than in one which is homogeneous. As part of an investigation aimed at improving the health and safety and competitiveness of the mining industry, the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the application of common offset radar profiling, using a 250-MHz ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system, for the detection of fractures in igneous rock. A series of radar reflection surveys were conducted to detect and delineate the extent of fracturing at various granodiorite and gabbro quarries and outcrops located in Minnesota. The application of radar profiling for detecting joints, sheeting fractures, shear zones, and depth to water table was demonstrated to be feasible with minimal processing. Radar reflection interpretations were verified by visual inspection of the rock mass and field mapping of local structure. The radar reflection section provides a simple, rapid, and cost-effective means for mapping of shallow (less than 10 m) small-scale fractures (greater than 0.25 cm) in igneous rock masses (characteristic of velocities between 0.061 m/ns for gabbro and 0.125 m/ns for granodiorite). Depth or distance estimates to fractures are within 10 pct of the actual, and time-shift compensation is necessary only when topographic irregularities exceed 30 cm.

A magnesium-base incendiary alloy, containing about 20 percent cadmium, 4 percent aluminum, and 0.5 percent zinc, was investigated in a series of vacuum-distillation experiments to determine the feasibility of recovering magnesium and cadmium as refined metals. Alloys prepared in the laboratory and actual bomb-casing alloy were studied at temperatures of 550° to 750° C. and pressures of 100 to 150 microns. Simple distillation and fractional distillation methods were only partly effective in separating the cadmium and magnesium. They were separated satisfactorily, however, with a special vapor baffle designed to condense the metals selectively. Magnesium and cadmium products were 99 percent pure and together comprised 82 percent of the total condensate. About 17 percent of the condensate was intermediate-grade alloy that could be recycled with new charge and contained about 70 percent magnesium and 30 percent cadmium.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a new type of scrubber (dust collector) and ventilation system built into the auger support frame (boom) of a Jeffrey 120L continuous mining machine. With this twin scrubber arrangement, one scrubber is mounted into each side of the boom. Each scrubber includes a 2,500-cfm fan, a flooded fibrous-bed scrubber panel, and a water droplet eliminator. The system was designed for minimum size and adds only a few inches to machine height. Exhaust duct design allows flexibility with various airflow configurations to suit both blowing and exhaust fare ventilation systems and brattice distances ranging up to 20 feet. Full-scale tests with exhaust ventilation were conducted at a Mine Safety and Health Administration surface facility at Bruceton, Pa., to determine the scrubbers' methane dilution capability. Several configurations of the twin scrubber-ventilation system produced striking improvements in face methane dilution when compared with conventional systems.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field test program in the Pittsburgh coal seam to investigate the effect of water sprays in the suppression of respirable dust being formed while cutting with a continuous-mining machine. Emphasis was given to the location of spray nozzles on the top and bottom of the cutting boom. Results showed that (1) sumping caused about 60 percent of the dust escaping the face area, and shearing and loading caused the other 40 percent; (2) during sumping, top and bottom sprays were equally effective in dust suppression and reduced dust ~13 percent; (3) during shearing and loading, bottom sprays reduced dust 61 percent and were about 50 percent more effective than top sprays; (4) the combination of top and bottom sprays was slightly more effective than the separate systems, but water consumption increased 60 percent; and (5) inclusion of throat sprays decreased dust reduction by removing some of the water from top and bottom sprays where it was more effective.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has pioneered the work of preparing ductile titanium on a large scale and has also determined the basic properties of this new and most interesting metal. A number of reports (1, 2, 3: 4, 5) have al-ready been published, and considerable interest has been aroused in a number of industrial and research laboratories. Some of these laboratories have also published results of their work on the pure metal. Although the properties of titanium itself are quite promising, it is apparent that considerable improvement may be expected by alloying titanium with other metals. That is, pure metals in general have shown relatively large improvements in properties when alloyed with other metals and titanium is not considered to be an exception to the rule. Therefore, the emphasis of the investigations now under way in the Federal Bureau of Mines Laboratories has been placed on the study of the alloys of titanium, particularly the titanium-rich alloys. While the main interest is in the properties of such alloys, proper direction and evaluation of the work require at least a rough outline of the phase boundaries of the alloy systems involved.

The objective of this report is to explain a statistical method for the summarization, organization, and classification of multivariate assay and other data from the mineral industry. Multivariate data are those characterized by several measurements at each data point, such as assay data from a mixed metal mine, or blast furnace data. A specific method of linear discriminant analysis, the Mahalanobis d2 procedure, is explained, starting from elementary principles; the d2 procedure enables many measurements at many data points to be studied by investigating the interrelationships among the data. The relation of linear discriminant analysis to other statistical methods for treating multivariate data, in particular the eigenvalue technique of factor analysis, is also explained. Example analyses are made on data from the Frisco mine, San Francisco del Oro, Chihuahua, Mexico. The data comprise assay values for silver, lead, copper, and zinc taken at some 19,000 sample points distributed into 91 groups.

A progress report is presented on a research program in which an attempt was made to develop a practical sulfide-volatilization process for recovering tin from low-grade Bolivian ores. Shaft-furnace designs and operating techniques were studied in a series of experiments in which the objective was to sulfidize cassiterite to stannous sulfide, remove the stannous sulfide by volatilization, reconvert the stannous sulfide to stannous oxide, and collect the resulting fume. A shaft furnace was developed and operated in a final test in which many of the previous difficulties were surmounted. Since the supporting funds were exhausted at this point, the project was discontinued; recommendations for further improvements in furnace design and operation were made on the basis of interpretation of experimental results obtained in shaft-furnace experiments and other related studies.

In April 1948, the Bureau of Mines was requested to evaluate the graphite deposit' known as the Benjamin Franklin and Just mines in Chester County, Pa. After preliminary investigation, it was recommended that the Bureau core-drill, trench, and sample the deposit and make beneficiation tests on the ore. During the first and second World Wars, flake graphite was in short supply, and a number of deposits in the United States were exploited. In 1942, the Defense Plant Corporation, through its lessee, the Benjamin Franklin Graphite Co., purchased 70.263 acres of graphite-bearing land and built a complete mining and milling plant with a capacity of 300 tons of crude ore per 24-hour day at a cost of $426,250 (Plancor No. 1254).

Thermodynamic properties of indium oxide (In203) have been studied with a high-temperature galvanic cell employing stabilized zirconia electrolytes. In the temperature range 790° to 1,230° K the free-energy change for the cell reaction 21n(1) + 3Cu20(c) = In203(c) + 6Cu(c) together with the standard free energy of formation of cuprous oxide gives the standard free energy of formation of indium oxide from the elements as ?Gf° = -218.78 + 75.34 X 10-3T ±0.7 kcal/mole. A third-law analysis yields the standard enthalpy of formation: ?Hf°298.15 = -221.5 kcal/mole.

Concentration of the kerogen (organic material) in oil shale was accomplished by centrifuging after pretreating the oil shale with carbonic acid to remove the carbonates and pretreatment with sodium hydroxide (pH 11.5) to remove the claylike minerals. Analysis of the materials obtained showed that the concentrations of organic sulfur and organic nitrogen compounds were not affected by centrifuging. These compounds are evenly distributed in the kerogen and are not strongly bound to the mineral constituents. Organic oxygen compounds, however, were concentrated in the light fraction. These compounds are more closely associated with the kerogen and are not bound to the mineral constituents. Iron compounds other than pyrite apparently are closely associated with the organic material.

The solubility of 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane (TBE) in water was determined from 1.0° to 97.0° C. The solubility (S) of TBE in grams of solute per 100 grams water was correlated with [S = 1,920.55 [exp (40292L7 11, T2 10 T 737.577 + 9.923962 ] where T is in degrees Kelvin. A thermodynamic analysis conducted on a system consisting of a TBE phase and a water phase in equilibrium with a vapor phase led to the calculation of the activity coefficient, vapor-liquid equilibrium distribution coefficient, relative volatility, and heat of mixing for saturated solutions of TBE in water. Data required for these calculations were the solubility of TBE in water and the vapor pressures of TBE and water as a function of temperature.

As a part of the Bureau of Mines program for the discovery and development of critical and essential mineral deposits, the Darwin district, Inyo County, Calif., was chosen for investigation as a possible source of, tungsten ore. Two properties were active in the district at the time. One was producing tungsten concentrate and the other was preparing to produce tungsten concentrate as a byproduct in the milling of lead-zinc ore. The objective of the project set up by the Bureau was to investigate promising areas and to sample, thoroughly those which preliminary inspection indicated contained tungsten ore. Work was begun November 17) 1941, and completed January 19, 1942. In the course of the project, 18 localities were inspected and 9 were sampled. The following pages brief the history, note the location, and outline the physical features and geology of the district. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is described and supplemented with assay maps.
