This publication summarizes the research (in-house and contract projects) programmed by the Bureau of Mines for fiscal year 1985 (October 1, 1984-September 30, 1985) under its Health and Safety Technology Program. The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced advance toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the system technology required to create a more healthful and safer working environment for the Nation?s mining and minerals processing workers.

Ventilation-pressure surveys are required to determine the rates of pressure losses in various parts of mine-airway systems. These may be determined directly by differential pressure measurements or deduced from absolute pressure measurements, Despite the confusion caused by its inverted nonlinear scale, the altimeter has special application to pressure surveys in mines in which only small differences in elevation are involved, as is true for most of our large bituminous-coal mines in these, the judicious use of information obtained by pressure surveying can result in greatly improved working conditions as regards health and safety and, in many instances, can yield large financial returns. The main purposes of this report are to discuss methods of using altimeters for pressure surveys and to present the particular methods of making surveys and calculating the results of surveys used by the Mine Ventilation Section of the Bureau of Mines.

Thallium is one of the rare metals that has come into commercial use within recent years . Its comparative scarcity , combined with a resemblance to the common metal lead , have retarded the development of uses for thallium . Although production is still measured in pounds rather than in tons , it is now finding application in a number of fields . Perhaps the earliest commercial use of thallium was as a constituent of optical glass of higher refractive power than similar glasses containing lead . One of the later applications to attract attention was the use of the oxysulphide in a sensitive electrical device similar to the selenium cell . The " Thalofide " cell , which was patented in 1919 , constituted for a time the most important outlet for thallium. During the next few years the limited use of thallium and its salts in other fields was insufficient to absorb an annual production of a few hundred pounds , and the price dropped from $ 16 or $18 per pound in 1922 to $ 5 per pound in 1924 . Beginning in 1925 several new uses were developed , especially as a poison for rodents and ants , and as a result the demand for thallium increased sufficiently to cause a recovery in price to the present level of from $12 to $15 per pound .

High extractions of lead, gold, and silver resulted from treatment of an oxidized, arsenical refractory ore by chloride volatilization. The ore was roasted in an oxidizing atmosphere at 1,000° C. for 1 hour. The chloridizing reagent was 300 pounds of CaC12?2H20 per ton of ore. Ninety-nine percent of the lead, 98 percent of the gold, and 96 percent of the silver, and only 6 percent of the arsenic, were volatilized. These results indicated that a satisfactory method could be developed for treating this type of ore. Recovery and separation of the volatilized values and developing metallurgical and operating data for this process require further investigation on a more extensive scale. Tests by gravity concentration, flotation, and cyanide leaching did not give satisfactory results.

The panic bars (and associated linkage's and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on Self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the "fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and soma commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in 'Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brakes" by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. L. Judy (our consultant), etc:

Among the procedures developed by the Germans for providing the tonnage of iron powder needed to make rotating bands for artillery shells is the use of a ceramic tunnel kiln, not only for finishing the reduction of centrifugal powders but also for making so-called "brickyard sponge iron," which, after crushing and grinding, seems to yield a product suitable for powder-metallur- gical purposes. The final report issued jointly by the German Powder-Metallurgical Society (DPG) and the Chemical-Metallurgical Branch of the Research Depart- ment of the Metallgesellschaft, Inc. (ZFC of MG) gives the available details of this procedure, which may be regarded as a further development of the process in commercial use since 1911 at a ceramic plant in Hoeganaes, Sweden. The Bureau of Mines' wartime development of the Hoeganaes process also cul- minated in the adaptation of ceramic tunnel kilns for carrying out the solid- carbon reduction of iron ores, and comparison with the German technique should further advance the art. This information circular is issued as a supplement to Bureau of Mines reports of investigations Nos. 3819,2 3822, 3841,2 and 4271, on brick- yard sponge iron and is based on four German reports entitled "Making Iron. Powder in the Tunnel Kiln," translated from FIAT microfilm reel H-46, frames 9190-9209, 9280-9299, 9339-9357, and 9377-9384 (PB L 70042), which represent the four original research reports, Nos. 2005, 2008, 2010, and 2012, respec- tively, of the Metallgesellschaft, Inc.

"The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. The Huber-Rydalch manganese property is in the Erickson mining district of Tooele County, Utah. The district covers the southern part of Simpson Mountains, a block rising abruptly above the surrounding desert floor (fig. 1). The Ruber-Rydalch deposits and other deposits in the Simpson Mountains manganese area were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers during 1940 and 1942 under the strategic minerals program. J. T. Pardee visited the district briefly in 1918. A. E. Granger and A. F. Shride, of the Federal Geological Survey, mapped the geology of the area in 1942 and 1943. The manganese deposits occur as veinlike masses in brecciated fault zones that traverse Cambrian and pre-Cambrian quartzite, quartzite conglomerate, and phyllite. The deposits now exposed near the surface represent the oxidized portions of primary mineralization originally containing rhodochrosite and rhodonite associated with quartz and calcite and small quantities of pyrite, galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite. The oxide ore is composed of manganite, pyrolusite, psilomelans, and wad in a gangue of quartz, calcite, and brecciated quartzite.

As part of its overall program of coal-carbonization research, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals from various fields of this country. Few of the coals included in this survey are used for the manufacture of metallurgical coke, although some well-known coking coals necessarily are tested to provide comparative data, particularly on blending properties. The overall objectives of the study were given in detail in a previous report.3/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical purposes, as distinguished from economic considerations, depends primarily on (1) the available reserves, (2) chemical composition, (3) preparation characteristics, and (4) carbonization behavior. These items are considered in selecting coal for carbonization tests.

The carnotite deposits of western Colorado and adjacent sections of Utah and Arizona were formerly an important source of radium and uranium until displaced by the exploitation of foreign deposits in the Congo and northern Canada . Recently interest has been renewed in domestic carnotite ores as a source of vanadium . Carnotite is a canary - yellow, crystalline , pulverulent mineral occurring in sandstones in the Colorado - Utah district as an incrustation on the faces of joints and fractures and deposited around and between individual sand grains , often strongly adhering to the surface of the grains . Chemically, it is a variable combination of potassium, uranium , and vanadium oxides with water of crystallization . It is soft and friable , and occurs in fine - grained or earthy form . In spite of a specific gravity of 4.1 , gravity concentration has not proved practical as a means of beneficiation because of the earthy texture of the mineral . Vanadiferous sandstones occur with minerals ranging from roscoelite (vanadium mica) , containing little uranium , to high- uranium and low -vanadium carnotite . There is considerable local variation in the texture of the ores . The treatment of carnotite ores has been described previously , with attention directed to the elimination of waste in mining and the extraction of radium . The suggested methods included those suitable for the recovery of vanadium , since both radium and vanadium occur in the same minerals . Moore and Kithil suggested crushing from 40- to 80 - mesh with rolls , accompanied by a rubbing action to loosen the carnotite adhering to the sand grains . This report describes work done in the Creede Mining district, Mineral County, Colo., in 1965-66 as a part of a Bureau of Mines study of the silver production potential of the United States. The ruining history of the district is briefly covered, and representative former and current mining operations are described. Mining and milling costs of the Emperius Mining Company's operation are given in some detail as being representative of the cost of mining typical Creede ore bodies under current technology. An estimate of the silver reserves and resources of the district is presented, subject to many uncertainties stemming from inaccessibility of old workings, lack of mining records, and low level exploration activity, all of which limit the opportunity to accurately evaluate ore potential. The report concludes with an analysis of future silver production trends in the Creede district. An increase of silver production to as much as I million ounces yearly is projected, possibly starting in 1969. As long as ore bodies in the zone of enrichment, in which silver is a major constituent, contribute a substantial part of Creede production, silver price will affect overall production rates appreciably. As the richer are bodies become depleted, an increasing portion of production again will be coming from primary sulfide ores in which silver is a byproduct of lead and zinc. When this occurs, the level of silver production will be governed chiefly by lead and zinc production and prices and can be expected to decline to the 1960-66 level, which amounts to an average of 240,000 ounces per year.

One of the primary goals of Bureau of Mines research is to reduce the cost of coal mining by improving the efficiency of longwall supports. One method of achieving this goal is the optimization of stress distribution within the support structure, resulting in a lower overall weight, more fully stressed shield. However, before stress optimization can be initiated, load conditions must be defined that cause maximum stress in the various support components. A finite-element model of a longwall shield was used to identify these critical load conditions. These load conditions were then evaluated in the Bureau's mine roof simulator (MRS) by instrumentation of a longwall shield and measurement of strains in each of the shield components. The critical (canopy-base contact) load conditions were identified that can cause structural failure at less than rated shield (hydraulic yield) capacity. Comparisons were made between full-contact and partial-contact load conditions. Other parameters investigated included the stiffness of the contact material, changes in shield geometry, rate of load application, and effects of horizontal constraint. Conclusions were drawn regarding the structural integrity of the major shield components and potential for stress optimization.

The Anaconda Pintlar Wilderness has a significant mineral resource potential. Five deposits have resources totaling about 180,300 tons (163,600 t) containing silver, copper, lead, gold, and zinc. Another 11, not sufficiently exposed to allow resource estimates, may have additional mineral potential. No placer deposits are indicated. There is little potential for the production of sand, gravel, or stone; alternate sources are closer to markets. No oil, gas, uranium, or geothermal energy sources are known to be present.

The evaluation of existing rock stresses from measurements of the change in diameter of a borehole that is stress relieved by overcoring has become a common practice, The stress evaluation has been generally based ,on isotropic relations whereas rock in varying degrees is anisotropic. A plane elasticity solution for a circular hole along one axis of an orthotropic medium is adapted for evaluation of in situ stress from borehole deformation measurements. A consistent triaxial testing approach for determining elastic properties of the overcore is also outlined. Comparison of isotropic with anisotropic interpretations of the state of stress show that large errors in evaluation may occur if the anisotropic character of the rock is neglected.

Five possible sources of water for waterflooding of petroleum reservoirs in the arid San Joaquin Valley of California were considered. Three of them (water produced with petroleum, water from a shallow saline aquifer, and waste irrigation water) were analyzed chemically; laboratory information for one (sea water) had been developed during a previous study. A series of laboratory tests made on the fifth source (fresh water) determined the solubility of calcium sulfate dihydrate in water. Laboratory analyses included the following: Chemical analyses of water produced with petroleum and waste irrigation water; solubility of calcium sulfate dihydrate in water and brines; the effect of excess sulfate on the solubility of calcium sulfate in brines; the presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria; and the permeability of cores from a petroleum reservoir to air, to water from other petroleum reservoirs, and to waste irrigation water. The results showed that most of the waters and mixtures of waters are compatible with petroleum reservoir waters and are generally suitable for injection. The calcium content of some of the formation waters is quite high, and care must be taken to prevent precipitation of calcium sulfate dihydrate. The permeability of the few cores tested was about the same to water and brines as to air, indicating that formation damage due to clay swelling will not be serious. The waters most likely to be available for injection are water produced with petroleum, water from shallow saline aquifers, and waste irrigation water.

Bacterial mutagenicity and mammalian cell chromosomal and DNA damage in vitro assays were performed on a diesel exhaust particulate material (DPM) standard in two preparations: as an organic solvent extract, and as an aqueous dispersion in a simulated pulmonary surfactant. U.S. National Institute for Standards and Technology DPM SRM 2975 expressed mutagenic activity in the Salmonella reversion assay, and for in vitro genotoxicity to mammalian cells as micronucleus induction and as DNA damage in both preparations: as an acetone extract of the DPM mixed into dimethylsulfoxide, and as a mixture of whole DPM in a dispersion of dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline. Dispersion in surfactant was used to model the conditioning of DPM depositing on the deep respiratory airways of the lung. DPM solid residue after acetone extraction was inactive when assayed as a surfactant dispersion in the micronucleus induction assay, as was surfactant dispersion of a respirable particulate carbon black. In general, a given mass of the DPM in surfactant dispersion expressed greater activity than the solvent extract of an equal mass of DPM.

The Bureau of Mines investigated separating HF from HF-SiF4-H2O mixtures by passing the mixed gases through a sodium fluoride slurry in an airlift scrubber and forming a mixed precipitate of NaHF2 and Na2SiF6. The oven-dried precipitate was thermally dissociated in two stages. The first stage was carried out at 400° C and dissociated NaHF2 to NaF and HF. Condensation and analysis of the evolved HF proved it to be 97 to 99 weight-percent HF containing 0.79 to 0.99 weight-percent H2O and 10 to 93 ppm silicon. The second stage was carried out at 700° C and dissociated Na2SiF6 to NaF (for recycle) and SiF4. The quantity of HF recovered from gaseous HF-H2O-air mixtures decreased with increasing relative H2O concentrations. Air was beneficial when scrubbing extremely dilute wet HF gases. At HF partial pressures of 0.24 and 0.013 mm Hg in the scrubber entrance gases, HF partial pressures of 6.2 x 10-4 and 9 x 10-6 mm Hg were obtained, respectively, in the scrubber exit gases. Scrubber efficiencies were 99.7 and 99.3 percent.

The standard enthalpy of formation, low-temperature heat capacities, and enthalpy increments above 298 K were determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines for synthetic dawsonite [NaA1C03(OH)21. The enthalpy of formation was determined by hydrochloric acid solution calorimetry, with the result ?Hf°298 = -469.4±0.7 kcal/mole. The low-temperature heat capacities were determined from 6 to 307 K by adiabatic calorimetry. Tabulated are low-temperature values of Cp°, S°, and H.-Ho° from 3 to 298 K. The derived entropy at 298 K is S298 = 31.55±0.3 cal/deg mole. Enthalpy increments above 298 K were obtained by copper-block drop calorimetry. Tabular data of Cp°, S°, H°-H°298, -(G°-H°298)/T, ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf are given from 298 to 477 K. Enthalpies and Gibbs energies of decomposition are also reported.

There are a number of methods for determining relatively small quantities of sulfur dioxide in air. However, those methods require fairly elaborate apparatus and laboratory facilities. Frequently in industrial hygiene surveys it is desirable to have a simple arrangement to obtain "on the spot" determinations. This has been accomplished for concentrations of sulfur dioxide of hygienic significance by using the midget impinger and decolorizing a starch-iodine solution.
