The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed and tested a teleoperating system to control a new highwall mining system. A remote operator was provided out-of-sight sensory information and control of coal extraction and haulage equipment. Surface and production testing proved that the teleoperating system supplied the operator with sufficient sensory information to operate the mining system. Details on the teleoperating system provided in this report include (1) sensor selection, (2) a description of the electronic control system, (3) equipment selection and modifications, (4) the positive test results, and (5) recommendations for system improvements.

Data obtained by the Federal Bureau of Mines on the dust explosion hazard in air are presented for 220 samples of agricultural products. Information is given on ignition temperature of dust clouds and layers, minimum explosive concentration, minimum electrical energy for ignition, explosion pressure and rates of pressure rise, amount of inert dust required to prevent flame propagation, and, in a few instances, the permissible oxygen concentration in an atmosphere to prevent ignition by spark and by heated surface. The effects of particle size and source of sample on explosibility are shown. The relative ignition sensitivity, severity of explosion, and overall explosibility of the materials are characterized by empirical indexes. This report contains Ma obtained by the Bureau in laboratory studies on the explosion hazards of agricultural dusts. Recognition of the dangers will encourage adoption of adequate measures to prevent ignition and explosion during preparation, processing, and utilization of the materials. Agricultural products constitute one of the largest groups of materials used in America. As a result of the Bureau's general survey of quicksilver deposits in California, the Guadalupe mine area was among those chosen for exploration. Exploration, such as that at the Guadalupe, was aimed primarily at maintaining or increasing production of quicksilver during the critical wartime period. The project as originally planned contemplated sampling the dumps and prospecting some promising surface exposures by bulldozer trenches. Salvage was the objective in the first case and new ore in the second. Later, a program. of diamond drilling was added, designed to add both to ore reserves and to geological information. This report summarizes the history, notes the location and physical features, mentions property and ownership, and presents a brief description of the mine. The geology is outlined, and the work done by the Bureau of Mines is explained and supplemented with accompanying maps. The work involved repairing 1-1/4 miles of roads; bulldozing 13 trenches by removing 2,345 cubic yards of dumps to provide for sampling; digging and sampling 9,284 linear feet of hand trenches, digging and sampling numerous test pits; and drilling 7 diamond-drill holes, totaling 1,000 feet. A total of 419 samples, including 10 percent check samples, were taken. Exploration work in California at the time of this project was under the direction of Spangler Ricker, supervising engineer of the California field office, the late Robert Bedford was in charge of the fieldwork on this project.

The mine of the Porter Coal Co. is located at the town of Porter in the northwestern part of Jefferson County, Ala., about 20 miles west of Birmingham. The operations in this mine are confined to the middle and bottom benches of the Mary Lee bed. The coal from the Porter mine is handpicked and washed before being placed on the market. The handpicked lump coal and the washed egg and nut coal are sold chiefly as domestic and steam-raising fuel. The coal finer than 1 inch is washed in 2-compartment jigs and utilized in the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The coal company has found that, when coal ranging in size from 1 to 0 inch is washed in jigs, a considerable amount of high-ash material finer than 3/16 inch remains in the washed coal. This paper gives the results of an investigation which was conducted for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the through 3/16-inch raw coal and the extent to which the ash might be reduced by means of coal-washing tables. This investigation has been made in connection with an extensive study of the coal-washing problems now being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the coal-mining companies of the State.

"INTRODUCTION The limited domestic demands for lithium salts and metal before the war were met readily by the use of minerals particularly lepidolite (lithium mica) and amblygonite (a lithium phosphate), from which lithium can be recovered relatively easily. New wartime uses, however, created such a demand that it became necessary to turn to spodumene (a lithium feldspar) as the principal source of supply. Although very large deposits of spodumene occur in South Dakota and in North Carolina, it much more difficult to extract lithium from spodumene than from lepidolite or amblygonite.During the spring and summer of 1942 a study was made in Salt Lake City laboratory of the Bureau of Mines on the recovery of lithium from spodumede. Preliminary tests were made on two processes - roasting with potassium sulfate 4/ 5/ and roasting with calcium chloride and calcium carbonate 6/ -,which appeared to be the most promising of the various processes that had been proposed. By roasting spodumene with approximately its own weight of potassium sulfate at 1,050º C. and leaching the product with water, about 70 percent of the lithium could be extracted. Consumption of the relatively expensive potassium sulfate, however, was high; much of the potassium was found in the insoluble leach residue, end large amounts were lost by volatilization and dusting. By roasting the spodumene with calcium chloride and calcium carbonate, nearly 90 percent of the lithium was chloridized temperatures of 850° to 1,050° C. Much of the lithium could be extracted from the calcine by leaching with water after roasting at the lower temperatures, but volatilization of lithium chloride was appreciable, amounting to 20 to 25 percent in a direct gas-fired furnace at temperatures of 800° to 850° C. At 1,000° to 1,050° C., volatilization was far from complete. Thus, it would be necessary to use both fume collection and leaching of the calcine, unless the roasting temperatures were sufficiently high to volatilize all the lithium chloride. Because of the well-known difficulties of collecting chloride fumes, it was decided to search for a better process."

The Bureau of Mines evaluated equipment and procedures for drop-weight testing of explosive liquids as prescribed by Test 4) a widely used method. It was demonstrated that partial ignitions, originally designated as negative results, should be designated positives; it was also shown that wear or erosion of the sample cups and the type of mount used for the apparatus had important effects on the results. Relative sensitivity as measured by Test 4 was found to vary slightly with temperature. The Bureau also designed a fixed 2-kg weight and associated electromagnetic release, which subsequently were incorporated as standard in a revision of Test 4. The original concept that the test involves only adiabatic compression was found to be an oversimplification; an alternate mechanism for the initiation process is proposed in which due consideration is given to the effects of cavitation and microjets.

The objective of this Bureau of Mines publication Is to present a nomograph that provides a fast, convenient method for estimating hydrocarbon lease bonus bids for offshore acreage in the Gulf of Mexico. Discounted cash flow analyses were computed from a model derived to show the costs necessary to explore, acquire, develop, produce, and abandon a 5,000-acre block of offshore acreage, and the estimated income from the sale of the hydrocarbons produced from the block. The range of the variables in the financial analyses used to construct the nomograph are prices of oil, $2.50 to $5.00; recoverable hydrocarbon reserves, 44,651,476 to 127,575,645 barrels; and discounted cash flow (DCF) rates of return, 5.0 to 57.2 percent. A total of 1,234 sets of DCF data were used to construct the nomograph. The range of bonus bids shown on the nomograph is from 2 to 90 million dollars ($400 to $18,000 per acre).

This report presents the results of calculations of the equilibrium composition of the products of combustion with air of six different mixtures of octane CgH18, plus PbEt4 and halogen-bearing scavengers at three air-fuel ratios, at pressures of 5 and 30 atm., and at temperatures of 350°, 1,000°, 1,800°, and 2,000° K. The air-fuel weight ratio has the values 12, 15:12, and 18. The concentration of PbEt4, M, in milliliters per gallon of iso-octane, has the value 1 or 3. [The Harrington-Hickory mine in the Star raining district, Beaver County, Utah, has produced approximately 20,000 tons of lead-zinc-silver ores since 1910. Production previous to 1910 is not known. The mine is owned by the New Majestic Mining Co. The property was rehabilitated and operated by James D. Williams under a 10-year lease with option to purchase from April 1943 to May 1949, Loans from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation in the aggregate of $41,000 wore used in construction of an access road, rehabilitation of the mine, and purchase of equipment for full-scale operation. The improved, all-weather access road extends from loading ramps on the Union Pacific Railroad at Milord to the urine storage bins 5 miles west o f town. The mine is serviced electrically by a. 5,000-volt line owned by Telluride Power Co. Mine transformers step the voltage down to 440/220/110 for surface and underground service.]

"The National Safety Competition of 1930, the seventh annual contest conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines to promote safety in the mines and quarries of the United States, has been concluded, and the five winners of the bronze trophies, The Sentinels of Safety,' which are provided by the Explosives Engineer magazine and awarded annually for the most excellent safety records, have been determined by the committee of award. One trophy was awarded to an anthracite mine in Pennsylvania, one to a bituminous coal mine in the same State, one to an iron-ore mine in Michigan one to a gypsum mine in Ohio, and one to an iron-ore opencut mine in Michigan.These trophies were awarded to the companies for having the smallest loss of time from accidents in proportion to the total number of man-hours worked by all employees at their mine or quarry. Honorable mention was awarded to each mine or quarry that ranked second, third, fourth, or fifth in its own ground and to all plants that were operated without a lost-time accident during the contest year. Eighty-four out of 337 plants that competed for the trophies were operated without an accident that disabled an employee beyond the day on which the accident occurred.Under the contest rules, all mines and quarries were divided into five groups, four of the groups representing different classes of underground mining operations (anthracite, bituminous coal, metallic ore, and nonmetallic mineral), and the fifth group repre-senting the quarrying or opencut mining of minerals whether metallic or nonmetallic. Twenty-seven mines were included in the anthracite group, 68 in the bituminous group, 52 in the metal group, 24 in the nonmetallic-mine group, and 166 in the quarry and opencut-mine group. The total of 337 mines and quarries was 26 more than the number of plants that completed the contest during the previous year.The committee of award which determined the winners of the contest was composed of seven members, all known throughout the mineral industry but not connected with the United States Bureau of Mines. The committee included W. H. Cameron, managing director of the National Safety Council; William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor; James F. Callbreath, Secretary of the American Mining Congress; T. T. Read, Vinton professor of mining of Columbia University and editor of Mining and Metallurgy; C. B. Huntress, executive secretary of the National Coal Association; A. J. Curtis, assistant to the general manager of the Portland Cement Association; A. T. Goldbeck, director of the bureau of engineering of the National Crushed Stone Association."

With the surrender of the Japanese Imperial Government as a climax to the capitulation of the German High Command , the main objective of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division pivoted from war assignments to its main normal functions . One of these functions is to give wide public distribution to valuable technical facts which the Division has obtained through research on petroleum , natural gas , helium , and related subjects . During the war years many engineering data and scientific facts could be released only on a restricted basis as reports to war agencies and others immediately concerned . Moreover , many of the wartime reports contained masses of detailed data that were prepared under stress to meet emergency schedules . For peacetime publication and application , these data must be reviewed , correlated , and rearranged so as to present the essentials in proper form . To illustrate , a wartime report of 50 pages might be resolved into one curve in a composite graph for a peacetime publication . Another factor affecting the orientation of the work of the Division is the broader horizon of research revealed by its war activities . Fundamental research and careful engineering analyses are just as important in time of peace as in time of war; in fact , they should be more important to the forward view , because under peace conditions disrupting influences that distract from the orderly acquisition of knowledge are minimized . Therefore , the concerted effort has been not to " salvage " the results of the war activities , but to evaluate them on the basis of their relative importance in the future economy of the country . Where wartime investigations have pointed to peacetime accomplishments , the effort has been to give the corresponding type of work additional emphasis . This adjustment can not be made hurriedly , but many of the necessary preliminary steps on the new course have been taken ..

Calorimetric determinations of low-temperature heat capacities and standard enthalpy of formation were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines for basic aluminum sulfite, A1203?2.0S02?5.3H20. The standard values of entropy (S°), enthalpy of formation (?Hf°), and calculated Gibbs energy of formation (?Gf°) at 298.15 K are 85.2±0.1 cal/deg-mole, -943.1±1.2 kcal/mole, and -820.7±1.2 kcal/mole, respectively.

This study was made to present the mining methods and costs of a uranium mine typical of other mines in the highly productive Westwater Canyon member of the Morrison formation in New Mexico. Four mining methods have been used at the Section 23 mine: the retreat- room-and-pillar method, a sublevel-slicing method (also called top-slicing), the horizontal-cut-and-fill method, and a modification of the ring-drill method. The application of the methods at this mine and at other mines in the area should be of benefit to operators with similar problems. Ore bodies in the Section 23 mine are irregularly shaped and vary in size, in rock strength, in moisture content, and in uranium concentrations; different mining methods are required and mining costs are not constant. A 6-month period of operation at the Section 23 mine was analyzed and mining costs, not including amortization, depreciation, or Federal taxes, averaged about $6.80 per ton.

The Bureau of Mines developed a zircon sand molding process for static casting of small titanium or zirconium shapes. Castings with unfinished weights up to 3.5 kg (7.7 lb) were produced in an inductoslag furnace and castings up to 7 kg (15.4 lb) were poured in a consumable electrode skull-casting furnace. Molds and cores were made by ram-molding, foundry-grade zircon sand (AFS gfn 93 to 95) bonded by grade D waterglass and tempered with water. Molds and cores were cured either at 250° C (482° F) or 900° C (1,652° F). Castings from the higher temperature molds broke cleanly from the sand while the lower temperature molds produced castings that had to be cleaned by sand-blasting. However, low-temperature cured molds and cores have a number of advantages as follows: (1) A faster, less energy-consuming curing cycle is used; (2) expended cores are water soluble which greatly facilitates core removal; and (3) enough of the binder in crushed expended molds is reactivated by temper water so that the molding mix can be reused five times without any fresh binder additions and up to twenty times without exceeding a total cumulative binder addition of 52 ml/kg dry sand. Crushed used molds that had been cured at 900° C had no detectable binding strength when mixed only with temper water. A large number of oxide and silicate mold washes were studied for improved casting integrity. The most effective wash found for zirconium or titanium casting was monoclinic zirconia (325 mesh).

Studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to develop a process for preparing thorium-magnesium master alloys or pure thorium metal by magnesium reduction of thorium tetrachloride in a semicontinuous reactor. Thorium tetrachloride was prepared in a fluidized-bed reactor by chlorination of thorium oxide or thorium oxalate. Conditions were established for producing a suitable thorium oxide feed for a fluidized-bed reactor. Thorium tetra-chloride was purified by vacuum sublimation and subsequently reduced by magnesium in a semicontinuous reactor to form thorium-magnesium alloys. Relatively pure thorium was produced by removing magnesium from the alloys by vacuum sublimation. Close to 100 percent of the thorium fed into the reactor was recovered either as metal (~93 percent) or as thorium oxide (~7 percent). The oxide can be recycled directly into the process.

This is the sixth report of investigations in cooperation with the steel industry to establish the technological acceptability of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking processes. The bulk of the .electrolytic manganese used in these tests was produced by the Bureau Of Mines from domestic ores at its Boulder City, Nev., pilot plant by the process developed by the Bureau. Electrolytic manganese for the first series of tests made in 1940 was supplied by the Electro manganese Corp., Knoxville, Tenn. The first report dealt with the application of electrolytic manganese to the manufacture of stainless.steel;9 the second with tests in acid electric and acid open-hearth low and medium carbon-steel castings; the third with its use in rimmed and? killed low-carbon steels; the fourth with its application to the manufacture of stainless steel as well as the Timken 16-25-6 alloy for gas turbines; and the fifth with tests in acid and basic electric steel foundry practice and basic steel ingot production.

The objective of this investigation by the Bureau of Mines was to determine the response to sulfatization of diverse low-grade manganiferous materials in the iron formation of the Cuyuna district. In line with this objective a bench-scale sulfatizing procedure was developed that was less expensive and more rapid than pilot-plant methods. Samples from the central and south- western parts of the North range were tested. Results of evaluating a total of 46 pelletized samples, originating in areas with an estimated potential resource of 94 million long tons with a manganese content of 7 percent, indicates that approximately 87 percent of the manganese may be recovered as a synthetic manganese ore. This is equivalent to more than 12 million long tons of a metallurgical-grade ore, containing 46 percent manganese. It is anticipated that a premium product, containing over 50 percent manganese, may be obtained by sulfatizing procedures. Natural gas and mixtures of natural gas and hydrogen were used as fuels in a laboratory engine to determine the relationship of emissions to air-fuel ratio and to establish practical lean limits for air-fuel ratio. Synthetic gas manufactured from coal (Synthane) and natural gas were used as fuels in a vehicle to obtain comparative data on emissions and performance. Results showed that lean limits for air-fuel ratio when using hydrogen-enriched natural gas were extended significantly beyond Chat of natural gas. Synthane pro¬duced exhaust that was significantly less reactive than exhaust from natural gas. With lean air-fuel ratios, the acceleration performance of a vehicle fueled with Synthane was improved over its performance when fueled with natural gas.

Traditionally, fine coal is more troublesome than the coarser sizes at every step of the coal-preparation process--screening, cleaning, dewatering, and drying. Therefore the present trend toward a higher proportion of fines in the run-of-mine product, brought about by changes in mining practice necessitated to increase productivity, has added greatly to the task of preparing coal for the market. One of the more difficult and costly problems involved is that of recovering fine solids from the washery water. These fine solids should be recovered in the interest of conservation, and they must be removed to provide recirculating water of proper quality. If there is a plant effluent, it must meet increasingly stringent requirements against stream pollution. Vacuum filtration has been used for years at a few plants to recover the extreme fines, but its additional cost discouraged general adoption until recently. Now, with growing emphasis on better solids recovery, filtration is becoming more widespread. Many coal slurries filter readily, giving high cake rates and clean filtrates. Others, however, particularly those containing either a high proportion of material finer than 200-mesh or an appreciable amount of clay, are much more difficult to filter. Many of these refractory slurries can be rendered more filterable by flocculation. A previous report of Bureau of Mines research dealing with flocculation alone was published in 1940.5/
