The objective of this project was to collect information applicable to the design of ground support systems in deep mines to include in-situ rock deformations, deformation-modulus, stresses, and geology and laboratory physical properties. All data collected was to be integrated and evaluated using a finite-elements computer code. In addition, considerable professional "cross pollenization" was anticipated from the association of University and SMRC personnel. Scope of Investigation Before a ground supporting system can be evaluated, the loading conditions existing in the region of investigation, strength, deformation characteristics, as well as other engineering properties of the rock structure immediately surrounding the openings, together with the pertinent geological information, must be obtained and analyzed. It was for this reason the following items were included in this research project: (1) The selection of a suitable area for the investigation. (2) The mapping of the important geological features of the area of investigation. (3) The measurement of in-situ deformation of rock masses immediately surrounding an underground opening of the area of investigation. (4) The determination of ground stresses. The Bureau of Mines has reviewed the literature related to the recovery of A1203 (alumina) from coal ash. A small amount of unpublished data is also reported. Of the processes studied, the alkaline-sinter process is the most promising from a technical standpoint. However, owing to the high cost of processing coal ash, the dispersed location of powerplants, and the domestic availability of higher grade alternate materials, coal ash does not rank as a primary source material for replacing imported bauxite.

This report describes the dropping - mercury electrode , its use in analysis , and the procedure of the Health Division of the Bureau of Mines in determining lead , cadmium , and zinc . The dropping - mercury electrode or polarograph is an electrolytic device , one electrode of which consists of mercury issuing in small drops from a capillary tube . Such electrodes have been in existence for more than 50 years, but they were not used for analytical purposes until about 1922.6/ Developments since have been rapid , especially in Czechoslovakia , Germany , Italy, and Japan and more recently in the United States . A recent bibliography / contains references to, 825 articles issued from 1903 through 1940. In 1939 Kolthoff and Lingane presented the first comprehensive critical review, in English , of the device and its use in analysis . They have recently issued a book on the same subject. Similar information also is included in a recent book10/ by Kolthoff and Laitinen . Much of the information in this and the two following sections on this device and its use in analysis was obtained from these three publications . The use of the dropping - mercury electrode in analysis is based upon the fact that the kind and amount of electro - reducible and electro - oxidizable constituents in solution can be determined from the current -voltage relationships revealed by this electrode or electrolytic device .

The effect of vacuum melting on the elimination of gases and nonmetallic inclusions for six low-alloy steels was investigated. The purpose of these studies was the analysis and comparison of differences in gas content and inclusions in air-melted and vacuum-melted steel. Data obtained from melts of 1-1/4 to 20 pounds indicate that vacuum melting decreases the number and size of nonmetallic inclusions and at the same time increases the degree of dispersion of the remaining inclusions. These improvements are undoubtedly related to the elimination of approximately 80 percent of the nitrogen and 90 percent of the oxygen as well as most of the undesirable metallic trace impurities.

Bureau of MinesThe Bureau of Mines studied the development of practical methods for recovering manganese from the extensive domestic resources of low-grade ores and open hearth slags. A one-step operation was developed on a laboratory scale in which manganese and iron compounds are treated with chlorine, volatilized, and separated by selective condensation. Manganese recoveries of 90 to nearly 100 percent were obtained from 9 of the most important domestic ores. Analyses of the manganese chloride product indicated that it was suit-able for aqueous electrolysis with little additional purification. A complete, integrated process that provides for the recovery and recycling of chlorine is proposed. This process appears to have distinct advantages over previously proposed manganese recovery processes, and, in sharp contrast to leaching procedures, it is applicable to practically any manganese-bearing material.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the "fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in 'Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/ Automatic Emergency Brakes" by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. L. Judy (our consultant), etc:

Although the Shafter district of Presidio County, Tex., is principally renowned for silver production from the Presidio mine, the occurrence of lead-zinc ores in the western part of the district has been known for at least 50 years, and there has been some production. An area of about 3 square miles in the vicinity of an extending westward from the Presidio mine was investigated in detail by C. P. Ross of the Federal Geological Survey in 1934. In the fall of 1943, A. B. Needham, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, called the attention of the Geological Survey to the area west of that included in Ross's map, and requested a detailed investigation of that area by the Survey in advance of development by the Bureau of Mines. After a brief reconnaissance by the Survey in the spring of 1944, detailed studies were made by Federal geologists in the summer of 1944, during which about 450 acres were surveyed, on a scale of 1 inch to 100 feet. Recommendations for the exploration of certain parts of the area were made in the accompanying report.

Any discussion of growth and future requirements has to begin with people--both their number and their needs. Both have been rising ever since any American can remember. Together, the number of people, which has been increasing rather modestly, and their wants and desires for material things, which have been increasing very sharply, seemed to have comprised a growth imperative in mineral consumption in the United States, especially during the last several decades. While the Nation's birthrate is now well below the replacement rate and still falling, the built-in momentum of the post-World War II population boom will continue to be felt well into the 21st century. Even using the modest projection of a 0.8 percent yearly increase, we are still looking at the possibility of 265 million Americans being around by Year 2000.

"An important activity of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and industry. In connection with these activities, the Bureau determines the explosion hazards of combustible gases, liquids, and solids and investigates means by which explosions may be eliminated or reduced in violence.The limits of inflammability and ignition temperature of combustible gases, vapors, and solids are of practical importance because such materials can be manufactured, transported, and used with greater safety, provided the range of concentrations and temperatures that cause explosions are known.Many organic compounds, which until a few year ago were merely laboratory curiosities, are now being manufactured in large quantities owing to the national emergency, particularly those chemicals entering into the manufacture of synthetic rubber, a product that is playing a major role in the Government program of national defense. This re Jolt gives results relative to the limits of inflammability of styrene and its ignition temperature in air and oxygen. This combustible liquid is now used extensively in the manufacture of synthetic rubber."

Research was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a well-point dewatering system in conjunction with a french drain to intercept waste impoundment leakage while reducing the volume of waste water requiring treatment. A well-point dewatering system composed of 585 production wells was installed around the perimeter of a leaking impoundment that previously used only a french-drain system for leakage control. The placement of the well-point system was designed to intercept and remove the leakage from the groundwater before the contaminant reached the french drain. Groundwater monitoring at this site revealed that after a period of approximately 40 days the well-point dewatering system had stabilized and effectively prevented the further spread of contamination to the french drain.

The objective of this investigation by the Bureau of Mines was to develop and test for laboratory use a retort embodying many features required for practical commercial-scale applications of vacuum distillation of metals. A gas-fired vacuum retort was developed comprising a hollow, cylindrical graphite liner encased in a thin shell of stainless steel. The liner prevents the shell from collapsing under vacuum and protects it from corrosion by metal vapors and the molten metal charge. The vacuum-tight shell protects the liner from oxidation and flame erosion. The retort was used to distill zinc from dross and die-casting scrap. More than 99 percent of the zinc was recovered as a condensate containing 99.8 to 99.9 percent zinc. (Atmospheric distillation recovers 95 to 98 percent at a purity of 99.5 percent zinc.) Distillation rates of 50 pounds of zinc per hour were attained at a temperature of 65° C. with pressures ranging between 50 and 100 microns. Distillation at this low temperature is not practicable at atmospheric pressure. Also, the retort is suitable for distilling other volatile metals such as cadmium and magnesium.

"Dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine (lecithin) dispersed in physiologic saline, a model of the primary component of pulmonary surfactant, is adsorbed by respirable quartz and aluminosilicate dusts. Dust cytotoxicity as measured by erythrocyte bemolysis and pulmonary macrophage enzyme release is suppressed by this adsorption. The degree of suppression of hemolytic potential versus specific adsorption of lecithin from dispersion in saline by respirable quartz and kaolin dusts are compared with dusts' BET specific surface areas to interpret the prophylactic effect of lecithin adsorption. Dust hemolytic potential versus medium pH is presented. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and photo-acoustic spectroscopy of lecithin on quartz and of lecithin on kaolin are presented and reviewed with results of studies of the time course of removal of lecithin adsorbed on mineral surfaces by digestion by phospholipase enzyme. Results are discussed in terms of a model of prompt neutralization of respired mineral dusts by pulmonary surfactant, and a gradual re-toxification by digestive processes acting on the adsorbed prophylactic surfactant coating following phagocytosis. INTRODUCTIONQuartz dust of respirable size is well known to cause fibrotic lung disease, but numerous questions persist in the understanding of the initiation and progression of this disease. Our approach concentrates on physical and chemical aspects of mineral dusts early-on in their interactions with living organisms, and we have chosen simplified models to investigate that interaction.In the alveolar ·spaces of the lung, tissue is coated with a surface-active material (pulmonary surfactant), which, among other functions, mechanically stabilizes the lung from collapse by reducing the surface tension of water in the alveolar sacs.1 This surfactant is also the material that is first contacted by a mineral particle that is transported to an alveolus and is impacted there. This surfactant material has been studied extensively. The primary components are known to be proteins (about 11 % in dog lavage fluid), and phospholipids (about 88%).2 Pbosphatidyl cholines constitute roughly 80% of the phospholipid fraction; about 70% of the phosphatidyl choline fraction is dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL).2 Respirable aluminosilicate particles are capable of adsorbing dipalmitoyl lecithin from dispersion in physiologic saline, a model for a possible initial event occurring upon deposition of a particle in a pulmonary alveolus. As may be seen from Figure 1, the DPL molecule has several fixed charges at neutral pH; a positive charge on the trimethylamine (choline) moiety, and a negative charge on the phosphate group. Also evident are the two fatty acid residues of palmitic acid, which are bonded through ester likages to the glycerol segment of the molecule. The fatty acid moieties of phosphatidyl choline make the molecule inso1uble in aqueous solutions under normal conditions, but a colloidal unit of aggregated molecules called a micelle is usually formed spontaneously above a certain minimum concentration. Small micellar vesicles are generally formed in the laboratory by using ultrasonic agitation or by solvent evaporation methods."

USBM Contract H0133045 consists of the design, build and test of 50 waveform generators. The waveform generator is a small ULF transmitter operating in the 1 to 3 KHz frequency range for the purpose of locating trapped miners during a mine disaster. This contract provided for the design, test, and building of 50 waveform generators using a discrete component construction with an option of using hybrid construction techniques within 105 days after the effective date of the contract. Because of large quantity economic considerations, this option was not initiated. Two engineering models were designed, constructed and tested and 50 final production units were fabricated using discrete construction. Complete documentation is supplied under a separate package which includes final schematics, parts list, layout information, equipment specification, production test procedures and qualification test procedures. Ten units have been delivered to the USBM. The remaining 40 units are being retained for packaging under contract H0242010 Transmitter Package and Receivers.

"An extensive mixed-mode fracture toughness testing programme was conducted on coal from three coal fields. A special mixed-mode testing fixture for coal and other geologic materials was developed together with reliable specimen preparation procedures. Dynamic modulus measurements made on each of the 116 fracture toughness specimens showed that these coals exhibit certain degrees of anisotropy. The fracture toughness testing programme systematically varied the loading rate, specimen orientation and fracture loading mode. Loading rate did not significantly effect the fracture toughness over the quasi-static range tested. Orientation did have a significant effect on measured fracture toughness. In the coals tested, the divider orientation and arrester orientation had higher fracture toughness than the short transverse orientation. Data showed that one orientation could have almost twice the fracture toughness as another. The fracture toughness testing enabled certain evaluations of three mixed-mode fracture theories: maximum tangential stress, maximum energy release rate and strain energy density theory. Due to the extreme heterogeneity of the coals tested, definitive conclusions regarding the best mixed-mode fracture theory are not possible; however, data do tend to support the strain energy density theory. INTRODUCTIONThe major aim of this research is to ·develop a fundamental understanding of how fine· fragments of coal (respirable dust) are generated during a fracture process. In a related paper [l], a hypothesis was presented for the mechanism of fine fragment formation during a generic coal material/cutting tool interaction. In this hypothesis, fine fragments are created during coal material/cutting tool interactions that are best described as general mixed-mode fracture processes. Data are required on the mixed-mode fracture behaviour of coal, the physical character of the newly-created fracture surfaces and the character of the inherent flaw structure of the coal material. Accordingly, a test programme was designed that provided some information in each of these areas. The testing effort seeks to measure critical fracture toughness under mixed-mode loadings as a material parameter characterizing in part the tendency of various coals to generate undesirable quantities of fines and respirable dust."

An economic analysis of underground gasification of coal, based on experimental results obtained by the Bureau of Mines, indicates that a gas suitable for use in a power plant might be produced for approximately $.62 to $.77 per million British thermal units. This estimate does not include cost of land purchase. The gasification experiments were conducted in a 3-ft. seam of high volatile A bituminous coal. The major factors which can influence a change in operating costs are height of overburden, power costs, thermal efficiency, and the gasification air inlet pressure. "Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism is still not fully understood. Experiments do provide evidence that the actions of unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of silicotic processes. This paper summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica surface, and the effect of particle size on silica toxicity. This paper also discusses the ways in which silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on freshness, hydrogen bonding, and free-radical interactions.INTRODUCTIONSilicosis is a debilitating pulmonary disease that afflicts persons (miners, foundry workers, ceramic workers, heavy construction workers, etc.) who chronically inhale silica-containing dusts (Schepers, 1960; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). Since silica is second only to oxygen in weight percentage of the earth's crust (about 28%) and is found in an enormous diversity of minerals, it is natural that silicosis is one of the major industrial health hazards all over the world. Although silicosis has. been studied extensively, the mechanism by which the dusts exert their toxic actions on cells and the processes by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly understood. The biological characteristics of the dusts are largely unknown, although it is suggested that the dust size, shape, surface charge, roughness, surface chemical composition, trace metal content, and crystallinity; dose of silica in the ambient air of the workplace; duration of exposure; genetic variation in exposed subjects; personal respiratory patterns; and presence of any coexisting disease (such as tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis) all influence the expression of silicosis (Koskinen et al., 1983; Noweir et al., 1980; Raask and Schilling, 1980; Reiser and Last, 1979; Thorne et al., 1985; Wolff et al., 1981). The actual biochemical mechanisms through which these factors operate are still unclear. However, the experiments do provide evidence that the actions of certain unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of the silicotic process (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Marks, 1957; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Summerton et al., 1977). This article summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica dusts and how silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on hydrogen bonding and free-radical interactions."

As a part of a research program designed to help minimize national requirements for new mineral commodities by maximizing recovery of metals from domestic secondary resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated the development of economic methods for recovering copper and associated metals from complex electronic scrap. Three types were selected for research: (1) multiple-pin plugs and connectors, (2) obsolete aircraft radio assemblies, and (3) the magnetic fraction of shredded electronic scrap furnished by the Bureau's Avondale Research Center. The plugs and connectors, after incineration to remove plastic components and melting, yielded a brittle ingot, as did the internal portion of the radio assemblies. The brittle ingots were ground to minus 35-mesh for processing, and the magnetic material was used in the as-received condition. A process using pretreated or raw scrap as a copper precipitant in various concentrations of acidulated copper sulfate solution was developed as a means of effecting an initial separation and upgrading in the form of high-grade cement copper containing all or most of the precious metals.

This work was done by the Bureau of Mines to provide quarry operators with an uncomplicated, first-approximation method for designing blast patterns, considering geologic structure, and to show the valid use of the technique by comparing drill and blast pattern dimensions used in the quarry with those determined by the presented method. The author visited 12 limestone and dolomite quarries in Ohio (Adam, Crawford, and Highland Counties), Wisconsin (Milwaukee, Racine, and Waukesha Counties), and Minnesota (Fillmore, Olmsted, and Wabasha Counties); observed the blasting practices; studied the major geologic features; and after discussion with the quarry managers, foremen, and blasters, compared the quarry blasting patterns with those as calculated by the empirical formulas (after R. L. Ash), with geologic structural considerations. When geologic structure such as bedding, jointing, folding, and caves, as well as explosive properties and field performance characteristics are accounted for in a manner suggested by the research, the presented empirical formulas may be used as a good first approximation. The included steps in planning a blast design and generalized blast patterns should be of help to the quarry operator. Design changes are recommended for those quarries where problems are occurring.

Diamond, drilling of some blast holes in stoning operations is practised in at least two iron mines in the Lake Superior district - the Soudan mine of the Oliver Iron Mining Co., on the Vermilion range at Soudan, Minn., and the Anvil-Palms mine, operated by Pickands, Bather & Co., on the Gogebic range at Bessemer, Mich. Diamond drilling, at the Soudan nine has partly replaced percussion drilling because of the extreme hardness of the ore and of the lean formation. According to Wolff,4/ the jasper or lean formation in this mine is the hardest rock regularly drilled in any commercial operation.
