It describes mining and milling practices, gives costs, and discusses transportation, climate, power, labor, and other conditions that affect them. The materiel upon which the paper was based was gathered during a field survey in the summer of 1937.

Real gross national produce (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.0% in the fourth quarter (table 1). The restrained quarterly growth rate was the slowest in 2 years, and was substantially slower than the 2.5 % rate of the previous quarter. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the summer drought reduced the fourth-quarter growth rate by 1.1 percentage points. A growing trade deficit and a reduction in business investment were the key economic factors curtailing growth. The trade deficit widened by $6.8 billion, reflecting both a surge of imports and a slowing of exports. Business investment declined 3.7%, mainly as a result of a slowdown in computer sales. On a year-to-year basis, the economy grew at an inflation-adjusted rate of 3.8% for 1988, the fastest in 4 years, despite the drought. However, on a fourth-quarter-to-fourth-quarter basis, real growth measured 2.7%. Increased exports and business spending for plant and equipment accounted for much of the 1988 GNP growth. Employment continued to grow as the manufacturing sector added 414,000 new workers (table 2). Of these, the primary metals industry added 26,000 workers, and the clay, glass, and stone industry added 10,000. The civilian unemployment rate remained low throughout 1988, fluctuating between 5.3% and 5.4% during the last quarter.

This report contains the results of a technical and economic evaluation of conceptual systems for the underground mining, rubblization, and in situ retorting of deep oil shale deposits. Study efforts were first directed towards evaluation of the applicable geology, associated minerals, rock mechanics, in situ retorting, access mining, ventilation, rubblization, safety, and environmental impact factors. Conceptual systems were synthesized and then evaluated against these factors from both a technical and limited economic viewpoint. The results of these evaluations were then analyzed and, based upon this analysis, the following two systems were selected for further study: System II: Room and Pillar-Vertical Drill and Blast System IV: Tunnel Boring-Horizontal Ring Drill and Blast Due to the large number of variables to be considered, a computer program was developed and utilized to provide data for the cost trade-off studies and economic analysis. Results of the early computer runs indicated the value of the tool available? in the computer program and led to an extension in the contract to determine the sensitivity of the systems to several of the more apparent significant variables. These results in turn led to a refinement in the design assumptions and a better understanding of the technical and economic options available to an owner-operator of a Vertical Modified In Situ Shale Oil Extraction System. This report is submitted in fulfillment of the requirements of Contract Number 50241073 by Fenix & Scisson, Inc. to the Denver Mining Research Center, United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines. The report of work accomplished on the United States Bureau of Mines' bauxite project in Pulaski and Saline Counties, Ark., is presented in this volume and in a series of Reports of Investigations immediately following this volume. This first volume covers the project as a whole, whereas the subsequent volumes contain maps of local areas and deposits developed, together with logs of the drill holes and descriptions of the separate deposits. The Arkansas bauxite project was initiated in December 1941 and continued for 4 years. The first 5 months were spent in studying the problems presented and in geophysical exploration, Core drilling began in May 1942 and ended in May 1945. The project was one of the larger and more important of those undertaken by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of developing domestic sources of supply of critical and strategic minerals necessary for National defense and for the successful waging of modern mechanized warfare. Some of the results of the Bureau's bauxite exploratory work have been made available to the public through the medium of press releases, transactions of technical societies, and government publications. More information has been supplied to government agencies upon request and to land owners and mine operators of the deposits concerned in the form of maps showing locations of all holes drilled on the property and logs with chemical analyses of' all cores recovered. In October 1946, the factual data were made avail-able to .the public in manuscript form in an-"open file" at the office of the State geologist, R. B. Foxhall, Little Rock, Ark., and at the office of the. Bureau of Mines in Washington. For the purpose of providing a background for the presentation of the factual data obtained, the history of bauxite is reviewed briefly. Information relative to past production and reserves of bauxite in Arkansas also is given. A resume of the development of the industry in Arkansas, the exploration and mining methods employed, the various uses to which the bauxite is put, and a brief outline of the geology of bauxite in Arkansas complete the -background.

This report is volume 9 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation,' and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Water Generator subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. This subsystem simulates the flow of water through a typical watershed-reservoir combination to predict mine drainage quantities in underground workings. The model is a integrated one which handles both the unsaturated and the saturated flow domains as a unified system. The solution of the model is achieved by numerical tech¬niques of finite difference method coupled with finite elements analysis. The Water Generator can be operated either as a free standing model or in connection with the Geology and Reserves subsystem as a part of the Master Design Simulator. A case study is included illustrating the application of the model to actual data. The appendices of the report constitute a user's manual for the program, and include a program listing.

This paper briefly describes the principal known commercial and near commercial deposits of gold-bearing gravel end the principal placer mining operations of Idaho County, Idaho. It is one of a series of similar papers on western mining districts. The data used in writing this paper were gathered during the summer of 1937. Information concerning gold-bearing gravels was obtained from prospectors and operators, while operators supplied most of the data on mining operations. No attempt was made actually to test the gravels. The principal object of the examination was to indicate placer areas worthy of further investigation by prospective operators.

On 25 August 1971, the U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted with the Aerojet Liquid Rocket Company to perform an engineering research program to be completed on 25 May 1972. The program objective was to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the underground use of several power sources including but not limited to a closed cycle diesel, electric cable/motor, rechargeable battery/ motor and exhausting diesel for mine shuttle cars, with emphasis on health and safety. This report, Research in Advanced Power Systems for Mining Health and Safety consists of four (4) main parts: (1) Hazards and Safety Analysis of Mine Power Systems, (2) Evaluation of Closed Cycle Diesel Power System for Mine Applications, (3) Closed Cycle Diesel Power System Consumables Compatibility, and (4) Concluding Remarks and Recommendations. The hazards introduced to a mine by shuttle car power system failure modes were evaluated and reported. A "fault tree" analysis was generated for each power system and the probability of death or injury during an eight (8) hour shift and for a week of operation (105 hours) were estimated. Advantages and disadvantages were also reported for each system studied. Aerojet's assessment, based on a "forced decisions analysis," of the four shuttle car power systems as to their relative health and safety is that the exhausting or open cycle diesel is preferred, followed by the closed cycle diesel, the electric cable/motor and the rechargeable battery/motor. The assessment was based on ten parameters pertinent to the health and safety aspects of shuttle cars. Drawing layouts of two typical mine shuttle cars incorporating closed cycle diesel powerplant concepts are included in this report. The performance parameters established for the two concepts are tabulated. A study was made of the logistics involved in transporting and replenishing the consumables needed to operate a shuttle car equipped with a closed cycle diesel. The closed cycle diesel powerplant consumables -oxygen, potassium hydroxide, and diesel fuel - were analyzed as to their compatibility with materials found normally in a gassy coal mine. Spill tests simulating inadvertent leakage of liquid oxygen in a coal mine were performed. A critical evaluation of existing oxygen sensitivity data and the relationship to the use of oxygen on a shuttle car in a coal mine environment is presented.

The 1963 Lignite Symposium was held on the University of North Dakota campus, Grand Forks, N. Dak., April 30-May 1, 1963, under the cosponsorship of the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines. This symposium, the third in a series, had as a general objective the dissemination of information concerning advances in technology and utilization of solid fuels, with emphasis on lignitic coals. Approximately 150 representatives of industry, government, and educational institutions from 21 states and 3 Canadian provinces were present at the symposium. Those attending were welcomed by Marling J. Ankeny, Director of the Bureau of Mines, representing the Bureau, and Dean T. H. Clifford, Vice President of the University, representing the University.

Mine waste and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, the government and the general public. This publication and its companion volume are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, April 19-21, 1988. There were nine sessions (50 papers) that dealt with the geochemistry, hydrology and problems of mine waste and mine water, especially acid mine drainage. These comprise Volume 1. The nine sessions (43 papers) that dealt with reclamation and restoration of disturbed lands, as well as related policy issues, are included in volume 2. Volume 2 also contains the ten papers that pertained to control of subsidence and mine fires at abandoned mines. Poster session presentations are, in general, represented by abstracts; these have been placed in the back of both volumes.

This study was designed to investigate roof falls in room-and-pillar drift coal mines and to determine geologic methods for predicting unstable roof conditions. The study area was located in Harlan County, Kentucky and the Bailey Creek (Harlan coal bed) and Highsplint (Darby coal bed) mines were selected for study. Correlations were made laterally between surface outcrops and within the mines using lithologic and trend analysis criteria. Lithologic criteria compared cyclic changes in roof strata. Results indicated that roof falls are associated with zones of weakness within or between five vertical cycles recognized. Abrupt lateral facies changes occur. In the Highsplint mine the roof was classified in four categories or conditions using 98 rib sections for control. Structure contour and isopach maps were used to project axial trends of the sandstone roof. A roof-fall zone was examined using ten NX cores taken from the roof and included lithologic, petrographic and clay mineral studies. At the Bailey Creek mine roof failure was caused by the heading direction being driven subparallel to paleochannel directions. Computer programs were used in trend analysis studies. Cross-bedding, paleo-channel trough axis and sole mark studies indicated a 350 discrepancy between surface and in-mine trough axes at Highsplint. A direct relationship between joint and "slip" frequency and direction with sandstone roll trends was found. Surface joints compared well with drainage Segments, hilt did not correlate with roof falls in areas of mines under overburden in excess of 600 feet.

Mining and metallurgy have had a long history in China, and resources there have always been considered promising. Under the People's Republic of China (PRC), a remarkable industrial renaissance is underway that should further gain momentum in the years ahead. Rapid development of minerals have not only brought the PRC prominence in industrialization, but also in world affairs. Chinese mineral developments, especially petroleum, have been increasingly in the news. Oil and gas may have great potential, but a very large coal industry is already in existence. The steel industry ranks fifth or sixth in the world. The PRC is also prominent in fertilizer, cement, and salt production. The export metals are well known. Also, the country is buying heavily in nonferrous base metals. The need to know and the intense interest in the subject have prompted this study. The world significance of Chinese minerals is pointed out. The history of growth and PRC's mineral supply position are reviewed. Evaluations are made of policy considerations and regional and technical factors affecting mineral development. PRC's mineral trade and efforts to obtain equipment, supplies, and know-how are assessed. Specific reviews are made of major mineral sectors, including coal and power, oil and gas, iron and steel, nonferrous metals, industrial minerals, and fertilizers and chemicals. The overall outlook is summarized.

Hydraulic fluid power systems are advantageous whenever power output must be accurately and safely controlled. The load movers, cylinders, jacks, rotary actuators and hydraulic actuators in these systems can be made to smoothly and accurately start, stop, reverse, hold position or move steadily under heavy and variable loads or torques. Because hydraulic systems are simple, compact, reliable, and low cost compared to other power methods and because they can deliver controlled power anywhere on the machine to which a hose can be routed, they are a pan of almost every type of machine found on a coal mining section. Some of the functions they perform are positioning drill booms, driving drill pots on roof bolters, positioning curter booms, raising, lowering, and swinging conveyors, driving conveyors on continuous miners, raising, lowering, and applying sustained loads to longwall roof supports, and advancing the face conveyor and roof supports in longwall mining operations.

The first metal-mine accident-prevention course was prepared and published in 1942-45 as a series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57). The scope of the course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date, and it is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars on accident prevention in metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: 1. Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.

This report deals with information regarding a new Medium Frequency (MF) Wireless Communication System for underground mines. This new telecommunication system works on low loss electromagnetic wave propagation modes which allow it to provide quality radio communications almost anywhere in a mine. Tests show the MF system can provide improved safety and managerial control, increased productivity, better organizational team-work and reduced maintenance cost; furthermore, MF's unique design allows for easy installation at a minimum cost. This paper covers the following: 1) MF design plan, 2) Overview of mine radio communications systems, 3) Preparations needed for designing an MF system, 4) MF equipment, 5) MF installation, 6) MF design considerations, 7) MF design specifications, and 8) Recommendations dealing with MF system. Experiments in four mines are illustrated to demonstrate the success and viability of the MF system. The mines range from small (500 tons/day) to large (67,000 tons/day) capacity and represent several different mining methods. The MF Wireless Communication System represents an advancement in mining communication and the groundwork for other advanced mine systems.

THE INVESTIGATION of barrier pillars in the Southern field is part of the comprehensive study of the mine water problem in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18).4 Tim Southern field is in Carbon, Schuylkill, Dauphin, and Lebanon Counties, in eastern Pennsylvania; has an area of 200 square miles; is 70 miles long from Mauch Chunk on the east to the Susquehanna River on the west; and is 1 to 6 miles wide. In the Southern field are 37 underground water pools containing 37312 billion gallons of water (5). Most of these pools overflow to the surface because the barrier pillars controlling them are effective under existent, conditions. Abandonment of mines in the Southern field has resulted in the hooding of 34 percent of the field. The largest tonnage of reserves of anthracite lies in this field, where mining conditions are most difficult. Large reserves of anthra¬cite underlie the abandoned mine workings, and before a great part of these reserves can be developed and extracted, the abandoned workings must be unwatered and kept drained (5).
