1972 constituted the second year of the projected five-year study on constitutive relations of coal. The schedule adhered closely to the five-year outline which is summarized in Table 1. This chapter is intended to serve as introduction and concise synopsis of the year's activities and results, which are presented in greater detail in the following chapters, which have been contributed by the individual researchers in charge of the various aspects of the project under study. Coal Sources, Material Procurement, and Sample Preparation Most of the studies performed during 1972 were done on coal from two sources: the Old Ben Mine #22 in Illinois, and the Bruceton Mine in the Pittsburgh seam of Pennsylvania, which may be considered typical of coal sources of economic importance in the Midwestern and Eastern part of the U.S. These two mines have proven to be reliable suppliers of coal material for our research. We have been able to establish good working relations with their personnel and feel that we can continue to count on their cooperation and help.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the resource availability of titanium minerals from 63 mines and deposits in 12 market economy countries. These mines and deposits contain, at the demonstrated resource level, an estimated 438 million metric tons (mt) of titanium dioxide (TiO2) in the minerals rutile, ilmenite, leucoxene, and anatase. An additional 314 million mt of TiOz is available from inferred resources. If all titanium minerals and other recovered heavy minerals are sold at total costs at least equal to the January 1984 market prices, approximately 200 million mt of contained TiO2 could be recovered in total. In terms of mineral concentrates, this equals approximately 11 million mt of rutile concentrate, 187 million mt of ilmenite concentrate, 3 million mt of leucoxene concentrate, 13 million mt of synthetic rutile concentrate (in addition to the ilmenite), and 89 million mt of titanium slag. The study indicates that world resources of low-cost rutile are declining. In order to maintain future supply for high-grade titanium resources, alternate sources will need to be developed, which may include higher cost rutile mines, Brazilian anatase deposits, increased production from slag operations, or more synthetic rutile capacity from ilmenite resources, which are abundant.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the nine separate parcels that comprise the 4,330-acre South Warner Contiguous Wilderness Study Area in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The nine parcels are along the east side of the South Warner Wilderness. They are, from north to south, the Granger, Milk, Cottonwood, Owl, Hornback, Eagle, Emerson, Barber, and Van Riper parcels. The Wilderness Study Area is underlain by basaltic, andesitic, and rhyolitic volcanic rocks and by sand and gravel deposits. Low-grade metamorphism is widespread in the volcanic rocks, with quartz, zeolites, datolite, chlorite, and calcite locally abundant in veins and amygdules. The rocks have been displaced by the mountain-front Surprise Valley fault and by crosscutting high-angle faults.

Reported fiscal year 1973 studies of fires and explosions seek to develop capabilities during mining operations to detect and quench ignitions of gas in the face area, to detect and quench by means of passive or triggered barriers explosions propagating in rock-dusted coal dust, and to detect incipient fires early enough for easy extinguishment. Research discussed includes minimum air velocities to lift coal or rock dusts, surveys to determine adequacy of rock dusting, chemical agents to quench gas or coal dust explosions and their relative efficacies, spectra radiated by explosions, and nozzle sprays of extinguishants.

"In preparing this paper the writer has perforce depended mainly upon published information, including the catalogs and pamphlets issued by importers and dealers such as the Diamond Drill Carbon Co. and J. K. Smit & Zonen. Special acknowledgment is made to various articles published by S. H. Ball. The writer of this paper, however, is alone responsible for statements herein contained and since he has often found it necessary to rationalize apparently conflicting opinions of recognized authorities on this little-known subject, he will welcome constructive criticism from the trade.Two types of diamond are extensively used for industrial purposes. One type, known as bort or bortz (boort, boart, bowr, etc.), consists of diamonds of the gem variety but unfit for cutting into gems. They may be colorless, yellow, brown, or gray. The other type, carbonado, known in the trade as ""carbon"" or ""black diamond,"" differs greatly from the white diamond, being opaque and apparently amorphous or noncrystalline. Actually, instead of forming a large single crystal as in a gem stone, carbon diamond comprises a mass of microscopic crystals that interlock to form a tough, homogeneous material with no planes of cleavage. It is found in various colors -- black, dark green, brown, and gray -- but usually it has .a dark lustrous black surface, with a resinoid or submetallic appearance, often resembling fine-grained steel. Upon exposure to the air the broken surface gradually darkens to an ash-gray color. Ballas is a special type of carbonado in which the crystals are definitely-oriented around a central nucleus. They are harder and tougher than ordinary carbonado but are much scarcer. The Cape ballas is reputed to be not quite so tough as Brazilian ballas but tougher than carbon or bort.The diamond crystals are isometric and take a variety of forms. The cleavage is octahedral and well marked. A crack is easily -started parallel to an octahedral face, and bort or gem diamonds are notoriously brittle, especially when subjected to sudden shock. Even carbonado, while it has a high resistance to slowly applied pressures, may be chipped or broken by a sharp blow.Exposed to radioactive rays, the diamond becomes phosphorescent; this property is often utilized to distinguish it from quartz, topaz, or glass. The unusually high refractive index likewise aids in its identification in the case of a more or less transparent stone. At the temperature of the electric arc, diamond is converted into graphite, another form of Carbon but one of the softest mineral substances. At a much lower temperature, as low as 1,5620 F., the diamond may be burned like ordinary carbon in an atmosphere of oxygen, and according to some authorities there is danger of burning a diamond if overheated even in air."

[As a results of work conducted during the past three years, the Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Washington at Seattle, Washington, has developed a process for the production of sponge iron. Commercial operation of this process in a 3 to 4-ton scale has been so satisfactory that its use on a large scale (20 to 100 tons per day) can be safely considered. Description of Process. The process consists in passing a mixture of iron ore and coal through a rotating kiln heated at one end to a temperature sufficient to convert iron oxide to metallic iron, discharging, cooling, and separating the sponge iron from the residual coke and silicious material on a magnetic separator. Both the coal and the ore should be crushed to peso as 6-meth scream, tans producing particles finer then 1/12 of an inch. Seventy-five parts of coal or other carbonaceous material arc charged with every 100 parts of ore), This large amount of coal is required in order to supply sufficient carbon to maintain a strongly reducing atmosphere in the charge, but may be reduced to about 65 parts per 100 parts of ore by recovering and using tae carbon that remains in the discharge product. Large-scale operation and refinements in furnace design should lower this ratio to perhaps 56 or 60 parts of coal to 100 parts of ore.]

Procedures for detecting and locating seismic sources are adapted to the case of entrapped miners. During an emergency the entrapped miner is likely to generate seismic signals, by knocking against the walls of the shaft. With a seismic array station deployed near the disaster area, the seismic signals can be recorded. Two algorithms are presented for the location of the source from the arrival times of a seismic phase: The first algorithm produces one, most probable location, under the assumption of constant velocity of propagation of seismic waves in the medium. The second algorithm is similarly applicable, however without any restriction on the seismic velocities in the medium between the source and the array. While the first algorithm uses an analytic approach, the second one is based on a trial and error procedure. The second algorithm gives locations with arbitrarily high accuracies, depending only on the accuracy of arrival time measurements and on the compatibility of the true velocity distribution and the assumed velocity model. The algorithm is shown not to require under certain conditions direct .arrival time measurements, thus eliminating a potential source of errors in the location of entrapped miner.

The U. S. Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 placed limits on the permissible concentration of airborne respirable coal mine dust. Evidence exists which suggests that the effects on health of respirable coal mine dust may depend on both host factors and dust properties other than concentration. Dust particle size, shape, density, specific surface area and chemical composition are among the dust parameters of interest in an epidemiological investigation of coal workers' pneumoconiosis and coal miner exposure to mine dust. The purpose of this investigation was to develop and demonstrate the feasibility of techniques to determine selected properties of respirable coal mine dust. An approved underground horizontal elutriator which samples air at 36 cfm was designed, fabricated and utilized in this study to collect respirable coal mine dust in three mines representing the Pittsburgh, Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning coal seams. Analytical procedures for measurement of respirable dust sample particle size, density, random projected area, total surface area and chemical composition are presented. Results of analyses of three samples collected in each mine are presented. Up to five full work shifts of sampling were required to accumulate approximately five grams of respirable coal mine dust in each sample. Statistical tests were applied to determine the significance of differences between properties of dust samples collected in the same mine and between arithmetic mean values of dust properties representing three samples collected in each mine. This paper3/ is one of a limited series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines to supplement a more extensive series on mining and preparation methods in the various mining districts of the United States. It describes ventilation methods and practices at the anthracite collieries in the Northern field of the anthracite measures of Pennsylvania as obtained by personal inspections in twenty of the larger collieries during 1933 and 1934 and from supplementary information furnished then and later by operating officials. This field is one of the four major divisions - Northern, Eastern Middle, Western Middle, and Southern - into which the anthracite deposits of Pennsylvania are naturally divided, and constitutes, in plan, a slightly bowed lens, about 60 miles long, and that extends from Forest City on the north through Scranton, Pittston, Wilkes-Barre, and Nanticoke to Shickshinny on the south with a. maximum width of 6 miles. It is the oldest and largest producing field of the four, and has produced continuously from 1S09. The total anthracite production for the State reached a peak of about 100,000,000 tons a year in 1917, but in recent years production has averaged about 50,000,000 tons, of which somewhat over half comes from this Northern field. The operations of three of the largest producing organizations in the State are almost wholly included in this field, as well as about half of the operations of two others of the six largest producers, It comprises the first 14 of the 25 numerically designated anthracite State inspection districts.

Comparative data from ASTM method of test E-162 and large-scale trials in the Experimental Mine show that the flame-spread quality of brattice cloth and other ventilation control materials can effectively be evaluated by either method. Materials having a flame spread index of 25 or less, as determined by the simpler and more economical laboratory test ASTM E-162, do not present a serious fire hazard when used in coal mines.

These numbers are used in the subject index to help the reader locate the appropriate articles.

This Bureau of Mines publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 495 natural gas samples from 21 States and three foreign countries. Of this total, 376 samples were collected during calendar year 1968. The remaining 119 analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results Here not received until 1968. All samples were collected as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917 and in late 1965 was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Ten previous publications have presented results of 8,165 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Hines Helium Activity prior to 1968. Tungsten, silver, lead, zinc, and placer gold occur in the Cucamonga B RARE II area (no. B5174). A strata-bound, scheelite-bearing zone at the Blue Diamond prospect (fig. 1, no. 1) contains an estimated 16,000 tons (15,000 t) of identified, subeconomic resources averaging 0.16 percent tungsten trioxide (W03). There is a high potential for discovering additional tungsten resources at this property. The California-Hercules prospect (fig. 1, no. 5) ha; a mineral occurrence which contains an estimated 1,000 tons (900 t) of tactite averaging 1.3 oz silver per ton (45 g/t), 0.75 percent lead, and 0.72 percent zinc. Another occurrence, at the Blew Jordam Prospect (fig. 1, no. 4) has an estimated 100 tons (90 t) of tactite averaging 10 oz silver per ton (340 ,/t), 3.75 percent zinc, and 2.3 percent lead. There is a moderate potential for discovering silver, lead, and zinc resources at these prospects, which are in metamorphic pendants. There are a few lode gold prospects in the area (fig. 1, nos. 3, 11, 14) are on geologic structures which parallel the San Andreas Fault, northeast of the area. These deposits are not well exposed and have been historically unproductive. Placer gold in area B occurs locally in the beds of intermittent tributaries to Lytle Creek (fig. 1, nos. 10, 12, 13) in concentrations as high as $1.17 per cu yd ($1.53/cu m, at a gold price of $450 per troy oz). The deposits have no significant volume, but could be utilized for recreational panning and suction dredging. In the Cucamonga C RARE II area (No. C5174) placer gold occurrences locally contain as much as $1.23 per cu yd ($1.61/cu m). However, gravel containing the gold appears to be limited to stream beds, and does not occur in sufficient quantity to constitute resources. Recreational panning and dredging also may occur in this area.

Underground coal mining is traditionally hazardous. Although many danger-prone human activities are now performed by mechanized equipment, this mechanization has itself brought new dangers to the underground mining industry, and the loss of life and limb has caused increased concern for mine safety. The 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act has precipitated a great deal of safety-related research on the part of the Government, industry, and private agencies. Much of this safety research has been focused on the new and varied man-machine interfaces caused by increased mechanization. Recent projects in this area have dealt with standardized controls, emergency shutdown capabilities (panic bars, strike plates, self-centering controls, "dead man" controls), and machine operator protective devices (fully enclosed cabs, canopies, side rails). There was a need for integration of the findings of current and past projects to move rapidly toward the smooth, orderly implementation of standardized operator work station designs for underground mining equipment.

Present indications are that in about 2-3 years phosphor tags will be required in commercial explosives. A permissible 254 run ultraviolet lamp assembly has been developed to permit mine inspectors to detect such phosphor tags and therefore to establish if non-permissible explosives were used. This new lamp is powered by a Miner's cap battery without interference with the normal lighting requirements of the cap lamp battery. It is compact, light, and rugged with very high ultraviolet output.

This document is Volume II of a two-volume report on underground and surface coal mine fires occurring between 1950 and 1977. Volume I discusses the methods of data acquisition, data analysis procedures, results and conclusions. This volume contains (1) a master list of all fire incidents obtained from MSHA reports, (2) an annotated bibliography of all MSHA reports, journal articles on selected incidents, and non-reportable fires (appendix), and (3) indexes to be used in accessing incidents in the master list and annotated bibliography. These three types of information provide the reader with a complete summary of coal mine fires during the period from 1950 through 1977 and a convenient means to locate incidents of specific interest. The body of this volume is organized around two tables and a series of indexes. The two tables are master lists of underground and surface fire incidents. They are followed by 14 indexes keyed to the master list and annotated bibliography. The appendix contains three different parts: o The annotated bibliography of MSHA fire reports (one section each for underground and surface mine fires) o The annotated bibliography of journal articles about selected fires from the MSHA bibliography o A listing of non-reportable fires (one section each for underground and surface mine fires) Descriptions of the contents and use of each of the three major components of this volume (i.e., master list, indexes, and appendix) are presented in Section 2.0.

This volume describes software developed for programmable calculators that is useful in the analysis and design of mine electrical power systems. The programs are equally useful for any industrial or commercial power system. All programs are written for both the HP-97 and the TI-59 programmable calculators. Listings of both versions of the twelve programs that were developed appear in the report. The programs that were developed can be broken into two groups. The first group encompasses design-oriented programs. The second group encompasses analysis programs. For each program the following items are provided: a description of the program's capabilities, the solution technique used, instructions on how to use the program, a worked out example with data and results and, finally, listings of the programs for the HP-97 and TI-59 programmable calculators. Typical problems that can be attacked with these programs include ground bed design, selection of contactor size, fuse size, relay settings, instantaneous overcurrent trip settings for trailing cables, allowable cyclic cable loading, short circuit analyses, prediction of transient voltages and others.

The system under wich these devices were tested permits the manu-. facturer., after his equipment has passed certain tests prescribed by the 'Ui"eau of Mines, to mark his equipment with a seal showing that it has been approved by the Bureau. These tests are designed to insure t hat equipments hav,e the minimum requirements for safety in use. The only object of the :Bureau in making such tests and publishing lists of permissible equipment is to help decrease the hazards of mining.

This report summarizes studies of 55 Idaho national forest roadless areas completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in the period 1966-1992. These roadless areas have been recommended for addition to the National Wilderness Preservation System, proposed as special management areas, or otherwise recommended for study by the U.S. Forest Service or the Idaho congressional delegation. The Bureau of Mines' studies indicate which parts of the roadless areas contain mineral resources. They also show where mining and prospecting are likely to occur in the future, where mineral production has occurred in the past, and where abandoned mine workings (possible hazards) would be encountered. The number of mine and prospect workings found are a measure not only of surface disturbance, but of areas not wilderness in character.

The feldspars are a series of related aluminum silicates containing varying proportions of potash, soda, rind lime; smaller amounts of other minerals arc likely to be present as impurities. They comprise three principal types: Potash spars, microline and orthoclase (KA12Si208); soda feldspar or albite (NaA1Si308); and soda-lime e (plagioclase) fellspars. The last-named is an intermediate group ranging from albite through oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytownite to anorthite or line feldspar (CnA12Si2O8), Minor varieties are barium feldspar or celsian and a potash-barium feldspar. Perthite is a mixture of orthoclase end albite in alternate layers. Graphic granite or "corduroy spar" is an intergrowth of feldspar and quartz characteristically in the ratio of 3:1. Cornwall stone is a natural mixture of feldspar, quartz, end kaolinite imported in former years in sizable quantity from Cornwall, England. (A similar synthetic mixture, including some fluorspar, has been blended and marketed in the United States as "Carolina stone".)
