The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed Cu exchange capacity (CuEe) tests on Ca and Na mont-morillonites and attapulgite clays. Mathematical models were developed from the data that the CuEe's are derived from for each clay as a function of pH, Cu concentration, and the concentrations of metal ions, which compete with Cu for exchange sites. An analysis was made of the impact of competing ions on Cu losses due to ion exchange. The results show that the CuEC's of clays, and hence Cu losses, are decreased by the presence of competing ions, and that AI and Mg have the largest impact of those cat-ions normally present in Cu leaching solutions.

This is one of a series of instruction guides developed to help instructors present health and safety training courses to workers in the metal and nonmetal mining industry. This course is intended for training those, usually the safety officers, who perform surveys for inhalation contaminants in above ground work areas. The handbook entitled ?Handbook for Surveys of Inhalation Contaminants in Above Ground Metal and Nonmetal Mining and Processing Work Areas? is used as a manual for the course and as a prime reference when performing the actual surveys or interpreting the sampling results. There are six experiments for the students to perform during the course to familiarize them with the sampling devices routinely used during the surveys.

This Bureau of Mines report describes research on methods of assuring the continued safety of mine electrical power distribution circuits through reliability and quality assessment of the protective devices, innovative inspection techniques for these devices and the circuits themselves, novel applications of trolley line circuit breakers, and computer modeling of distribution systems to determine the proper ratings for cables, power sources, and circuit protective elements. The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to develop and evaluate a training workshop for mine safety training personnel. The workshop was based on the Instructional Development Institute (IDI) which has been used for nearly ten years to train educators and administrators in the application of a nine-step model for defining, developing, and evaluating instruction. The Mining Instructional Development Institute (MIDI) was developed by investigators at the University of Southern California as a two-phase project. Phase I involved the modification of the six-day IDI program (including audiovisual presentations, workbooks, games, and exercises) for use by mine safety trainers as a workshop lasting three and one-half days. Phase II involved the evaluation and validation of the prototype MIDI workshop by means of a two-stage jury of experts and a prototype field trial. On the basis of data collected in the validation process it was determined that the institute provided an effective and useful method of instruction in mine safety training and that the institute would be especially valuable for mine safety training administrators and supervisors.

It is estimated that well over 20 million lb of chromium and 8 million lb of nickel, plus other metal values, are diverted annually to furnace dusts, mill scale, and contaminated swarfs in the domestic stainless and other specialty steelmaking industry. Little inroad has been made toward the in-plant recycling of these wastes to reclaim the metal values. The Bureau of Mines has devised a process for recovering about 90 pct of the chromium and molybdenum and well over 90 pct of the nickel and iron from stainless steelmaking furnace dusts, swarf, and mill scale. Other metals such as manganese are also recovered. Initial laboratory results were confirmed and expanded to include a wide variation of stainless steelmaking waste mixtures. Later experiments have included specialty steelmaking wastes other than from stainless steelmaking. Significantly, the ease of technology transfer has been demonstrated by a number of industrial-sized (19-ton) commercial electric furnace heats, in which the pelletized wastes represented some 10 to 20 pct of the furnace charge, replacing part of the normal scrap charge. Results of these successful large-scale trials are presented. Some information is also presented on incorporation into the pellets of chromium-bearing particulate wastes originating from other than steelmaking production. Cost evaluation indicates the process is economically attractive.

This document details the method whereby Allen Corporation of America gathered and analyzed data and developed an annotated bibliography of metal and nonmetal mine fire reports (1950-1979). The primary objective of this program was to develop the annotated bibliography which included MSHA accident reports and periodicals. Two additional objectives were to gather data on non-reportable fires and to conduct statistical analyses on the data to delineate trends. Data was acquired from three major areas: periodicals, MSHA fire reports, and mine safety directors. Data was separated into reportable fires (at least ½ - hour duration or injury), non-reportable fires, and opinion data. The data was then analyzed by time trends, state, ore, ignition source, burning substance, location, equipment, detection, duration, injuries, fatalities, and successful extinguishing agent. The authors make a number of recommendations: (1) improved stationary electrical equipment design and fire protection, (2) improved design of mobile equipment to separate combustibles from ignition sources, (3) improved maintenance, (4) improved housekeeping, and (5) improved training. The document is divided into two volumes and an appendix. Volume I contains data acquisition procedures, data analysis procedures, and conclusions and recommendations. Volume II contains a chronological list of mine fires and fifteen indexes to assist the reader in locating fire incident report of interest. The Appendix contains the annotated bibliography of over 300 metal and nonmetal mine fire reports and journal articles and a list of non-reportable fires.

The domestic primary copper industry generates in excess of 600 million t of mining and mineral-processing waste annually. Most of the waste poses negligible environmental threat, but a small fraction, because of toxic or corrosive characteristics, may be subject to regulation under Subtitle C of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) or other pertinent regulations. Among the wastes generated by various copper producers are flue dusts, slags, refinery-bleed solutions, and. acid-plant wastes. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has researched methods to mitigate the environmental threat posed by copper-processing wastes while recovering valuable metals from these materials. Acid-leach processing of flue dusts has been demonstrated feasible along with sulfide treatment of liquid refinery wastes and acid-plant-bleed and gas-cleaning solutions to precipitate dissolved metals. In, addition, the feasibility of removing copper and molybdenum from slag, as well as stabilization of precipitated sulfide wastes by vitrification, have been investigated.

A study was made of the coal resources of an area in Jackson County, Ala., forming a part of the Flat Rock, Henegar, and Stevenson quadrangles. The area studied is a portion of the Plateau coalfield on Sand Mountain and is near the Tennessee Valley Authority's Widows Creek steamplant. Since no detailed geological study of this area had been published, some reconnaissance work was done. The coalbeds and adjacent strata such as sandstones, conglomeratic sandstones, and conglomerates were studied. Available drill logs, together with the areal geology, provided sufficient information to permit correlation of the coalbeds and an estimation of coal reserves. For all categories of reserves, computed on a regional basis, a total of 72,920,000 tons of coal more than 14 inches thick is estimated for the areas studied in Stevenson. Flat Rock, and Henegar quadrangles. Of this tonnage, 40,001.000 tons is estimated to have less than 60 feet of overburden. The total measured coal reserves for the above three quadrangles are 16,359,000 tons, with 12,471,000 tons under less than 60 feet of cover.

Bituminous coals having maximum fluidity values in the 40- to 25,400-dial-divisions-per-minute (ddpm) range were carbonized in a continuous, entrained-bed reactor. Carbonization was conducted in an 8-inch diameter, vertical reactor at temperatures from 955° to 1,345° F and at air-to-coal ratios ranging from 4.63 to 16.12 scf/lb of moisture-and ash-free coal charged. Carbonization rates from about 118 to 360 lb/hr, as-carbonized basis, were examined. It was demonstrated that carbonization temperature and air-to-coal ratio must exceed minimum values for continuous operation. Within the operating conditions discussed, highly fluid bituminous coal was carbonized to produce tar and nonagglomerated char. The yield of tar ranged from 21.3 to 38.9 gallons per ton and the char yield ranged from 1,109 to 1,563 pounds per ton, all units expressed on a moisture-and ash-free basis. It was demonstrated that the maximum fluidity and the average size of the coal along with the air-to-coal ratio and the carbonization temperature act together to influence the carbonization product yields and certain properties of the products. Prediction equations were developed from the data for product yields and selected properties of the char, tar, and gas.

The human body is remarkably adaptable and capable of performance in a wide variety of environments and circumstances. It cannot be said, however, that the body is capable of performing equally well under all conditions. In fact, when faced with certain types of tasks or environmental demands, the body may have to adapt using methods that result in substantial performance limitations. Such a phenomenon is evident when workers must adopt unusual or restricted postures during performance of physically demanding work tasks. For the purposes of this discussion, the term "unusual posture" will be considered as any working posture other than typical standing or sitting positions. The term "restricted posture" designates postures that are forced upon workers due to restrictions in workspace. The vast majority of ergonomics research has focused on establishing design criteria for work involving standing (e.g., Snook and Ciriello, 1991; Waters et al., 1993) or seated postures (e.g., Grandjean, 1988), and understandably so. However, it must be recognized that there are numerous jobs (e.g., underground miners, aircraft baggage handlers, plumbers, agricultural workers, mechanics, etc.) where workers must perform in less desirable postures such as kneeling, stooping, squatting, and lying down (Haselgrave et al., 1997). The work is detailed under a number of main headings corresponding to the organizational structure of the Division , the various activities being under the immediate direction of unit chiefs , who report directly to the author . Specific credit , however , is due to the individual unit leader and his assistants .

This study consists of four descriptive Sections covering respectively: a state-of-the-art literature survey on ungrounded and grounded power systems, a report on literature pertaining to human threshold limits of electric shock, an analysis of the performance requirements of isolated systems and a section on design and performance specifications for an isolated system the final section includes copies, and translations where applicable, of the most important articles on foreign mining practice as well as some technical publications which could be difficult to obtain elsewhere. Section 2 - Literature Survey In analyzing the available literature on ungrounded systems it became apparent that too strict an interpretation of Section 1.1 of the Contract would limit the survey in both period of time analyzed and in available literature which discussed several types of power systems. Therefore, the survey was expanded to cover approximately the past twenty-year period and to cover literature which addressed itself to both ungrounded and grounded power system operation. Section 2 gives a brief summary of this literature survey and lists the important papers and books which were examined.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes a system to determine the position and heading of a continuous mining machine during the maneuvers required at the face area of a mine. The system consists of commercially available angular position sensors and a computer interface developed and tested at the Bureau. The sensors employed are laser-based scanning devices that report the angular location of retroreflective targets within their 90° field-of-view. The targets are mounted on the continuous mining machine; the laser scanners are mounted on an external reference structure. The computer interface consists of a single-board computer-controller programmed to gather and process the angular position information, and to calculate the machine's position and heading relative to the reference structure. A sensor fusion algorithm will be incorporated into the computer interface programming to increase the accuracy and reliability of the system.

This report, the second of a series, presents the results of laboratory corrosion studies which were made in connection with a one-year test on aluminum lease tanks conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines. Part I of the report contains the results of the field teats.5 The studies were made on an oil lease in a so-called "sour district," near Borger, Tag., where free hydrogen sulphide accompanied the production of oil, gas, and salt water. Steel tanks previously used on the lease had suffered severe corrosion, because steel is inherently susceptible to attack by hydrogen sulphide. Because of the high resistivity of aluminum to the action of hydrogen sulphide, it Was believed that this metal had promising possibilities as a material for the construction of lease tanks in "sour districts." The results of the one-year field teat proved that aluminum lease tanks will withstand corrosion by hydrogen sulphide, but it was found that aluminum was susceptible to attack by salt water, which was invariably present in certain portions of the tanks, and that hydrogen sulphide accelerated this salt-water corrosion in an indirect manner, as will be explained hereinafter. In order to study corrosion conditions encountered in the tanks during the test period, a laboratory was maintained at the site of the aluminum lease tanks.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated the absorption of radium and thorium from waste uranium leach liquor by clays and other materials. This work was conducted in support of the Bureau's goal of minimizing the environ¬mental conflicts, impacts, and occupational hazards Associated with mining and mineral processing operations. Tailings and soil samples from Wyoming and Utah were contacted with tailings liquors to determine the degree of absorp¬tion. Absorption ranged from 0 to 99 percent for radium and from 0 to 31 per¬cent for thorium. Some samples, which readily absorbed radium, were contacted with various salt solutions that could be present in tailings solutions to determine their effectiveness as desorbents. The desorption of radium ranged from 0.06 to 100 percent. An alpha-spectrometric method was used to determine the radium and thorium, concentrations in the solutions and the solids.

Clean energy production from coal, oil, and gas, and the development of these and other energy sources continued to be a major objective of the energy research program of the Bureau of Mines.3 In 1971 increased emphasis was placed on the production of fluid fuels and chemicals from coal. Advances were achieved in the development of the Synthane and Hydrane gasification processes for producing pipeline gas from coal (page 31), and progress was made in research on solid wastes utilization (page 2), and on liquid fuels production from coal (page 37); Coal mine safety, solid waste disposal and utilization, coal preparation and transport, and fundamental research on coal and related products also continued to be the subject of extensive research. Improved methods for extracting petroleum and natural gas without surface and subsurface pollution featured research on these vital fuel and energy sources. This research was highlighted by studies of the fracturing systems of reservoir rocks, including subsurface fracture mapping and new fracturing techniques to achieve optimum production of oil and gas (page 52). Of equal importance were projects on oil recovery by water or gas flooding (page 52), by steam injection (page 57), on the identification of oil spills (page 63), and on means to reduce vehicular exhaust emissions (page 66).

This report presents the methods and results performed pursuant to the U. S. Bureau of Mines contract entitled "Noise Abatement in Mining Machinery," Number H0122054. 2.1 Background Until the Congress of the United States created and passed Public Law 91-173, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, there were no directly-applicable standards for noise exposure for underground coal miners.1 Section 206 of this law, approved December 30, 1969, provided for standards of noise to be applicable to each coal mine. This article updates the status of fatalities occurring in both coal and metal/nonmetal mines from January through December of 2001. Based on preliminary accident reports, as of December 31, 2001, seventy-two fatalities have occurred at coal and metal/ nonmetal mining operations. During this period, forty-two fatalities occurred at coal operations and thirty fatalities occurred at metal/nonmetal operations. Ignition or explosion of gas or dust and fall of roof were the most frequent accident classifications in coal and powered haulage fatalities were the most frequent accident classification in metal/nonmetal.

Thirty-seven blasts have been monitored using either three or four seismographs, at four coal strip mines and at a limestone quarry. Statistical analysis of the data shows that square-root, cube-root, and site-specific scaling methods predict peak particle velocities with about the same (low) degree of reliability. Some mines have peak particle velocities that are significantly lower or higher than the U.S. Bureau of Mines averages (Siskind et al., 1980). This suggests that the option provided by the proposed regulations (Office of Surface Mining, 1983), to adjust blast designs based on site-specific measurements could be highly beneficial both to operators and to the public. The frequency spectra reveal that the predominant frequencies were generally less than 50 Hz but several blasts had a significant amount of energy up to 125 Hz. In some cases the vibration energy was concentrated at frequencies corresponding to the delay intervals.
