INJURY EXPERIENCE AND EMPLOYMENT DATA on all stone quarries and associated plants in the United States are presented in this publication for the calendar year 1959. Such related operations as the manufacture of cement and lime and rock dressing are included. Data on clay and sand and gravel operations are not included and will be found in other Bureau publications on injuries and employment. The Bureau is authorized to make requests for such data and the information voluntarily submitted by the operators contributes to the promotion of safety in the quarrying industry. Every effort has been made to make this canvass as complete as possible. Data for production workers and office employees at the quarry site are included.

The Bureau of Mines has constructed a special compression chamber for developing stress-strain relationships of mine backfill and simulating the high compressive ground pressures encountered in underground mines. A one-dimensional, or Earth-Pressure-at-Rest model is proposed for backfills subjected to these pressures. Results of the compression tests performed in the chamber indicate that reliable stress-strain relationships can be developed from these tests. The primary objective of the test series was to evaluate the effectiveness of compaction of common backfills in retarding ground closure. Analysis of the stress-strain data shows an eightfold reduction in relative strain in optimum well-graded, compacted backfills over poorly graded, loose backfill material. Analysis of the one-dimensional compression test data also indicates a significant retardation of transmitted stress in dense compacted samples of backfill and natural sands. Although not fully understood, a deformation mechanism is thought to occur at the intergranular contacts in cyclic fashion causing frictional heat loss and a reduction in transmitted stresses in the densely packed materials. The experimental values of transmitted stress are compared with theoretical values of effective stress calculated from the one-dimensional compression relationships developed by Hendron (4).3 These experimental values of transmitted stress compare very closely with the theoretical values of effective stress.

Tungsten metal, chemically equivalent to commercial grade, is produced by electrolysis of impure tungsten compounds or scheelite in an alkali, phosphate or borate electrolyte. A preliminary investigation of fused-bath electrolysis shows the effect of electrolyte composition, temperature, and current density on current efficiency, yield, crystal structure, and purity of product. Experiments show that tungsten can be electrowon from scheelite in a fused alkali, phosphate, or borate bath with similar results. Studies on electrolyte composition show that the addition of sodium chloride is essential to both electrolytes in treating scheelite. Although its main function is to react with or flux the CaO, it also increases the bath fluidity. Temperature studies revealed optimum ranges between 900° and 1,100° C.; 900° C. proved satisfactory for tungsten trioxide, and 950° to 1,050° C. for scheelite. Current efficiencies were satisfactory for all current densities ranging from 10 to 57 a./dm.2. Yields were 400 to 650 g./kw.-hr. over the same current-density range. Crystal size and purity of the product are functions of temperature, current density, and amount of impurities in the electrolyte. Deposited crystals vary in shape from spherical grains to clusters of dendritic hexagonal needles, and in size from smaller than 35 to 570 microns. The purity of the tungsten metal produced ranges from 99.7 to 99.94 percent.

In the late 1970's, the Bureau of Mines began to examine the criteria for reestablishing vegetative cover on coal strip mine spoils near Glenrock, WY. A 9-acre plot, consisting of (1) spoils covered with topsoil, (2) spoils without topsoil, and (3) spoils treated with sewage sludge, was constructed. These plots were seeded with Tegmar intermediate wheatgrass (Agropyron intermedium), Fairway crested wheatgrass (A. cristatum), and Critana thickspike wheatgrass (A. dasystachyum). After 5 yr, the topsoil had about 70 pct plant coverage. Revegetated spoils, without topsoil addition, averaged approximately 30 pct plant coverage, and sewage sludge-treated spoils had about 45 pct plant coverage. Comparison of grass types showed the intermediate wheatgrass produced greater surface coverage.

Crude-petroleum pipe lines in the United States on May 1, 1941, had a total length of 118,350 miles - an increase of 7,770 miles since Jun, 30, 1936, then the last previous survey was made by the Bureau of Mines. The expansion was due almost entirely to trunk-line construction, as the mileage of gathering lines was virtually unchanged from 1936. The greatest mileage of gathering lines, 53,640, was recorded in the survey of May 1, 1931. Both trunk and gathering-line mileage decreased moderately, in the interval from 1531 to 1936, but the present survey indicates that trunk-line facilities have expanded since 1936 to new high levels. Truck-line mileage equaled 55 percent of the total mileage of all crude lines on May 1, 1941, and 52 percent is 1936. The total length of gasoline pipe lines on May 1, 1941, was 9,001 miles this does not include several hundred miles of life under construction at that time or several hundred additional miles now being laid. No detailed surveys of gasoline mileage were made for 1, 1931, and June 30, 1936, but the mileage for those dates was about 1,400 and 4,600, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines gathered test data on the use of a continuous borer in mining an anthracite bed, which was 30 feet thick on a pitch of 15° to 45°. Gangways were driven with the continuous borer, ventilation openings between gangways were driven with a large-diameter auger, and the blocks of coal between completed gangways were mined by the long-hole method, Conveyors were used to transport the mined coal. The continuous borer operated on a coal floor that was frequently soft because of heaving. The continuous borer could not bore openings on a grade exceeding 27 percent (15° pitch). Because 150 was also the lower limit of the pitch, of the bed, the continuous borer was used only to drive gangways. The continuous borer virtually filled the workplace, leaving insufficient space to place heavy-duty timber and cushioning material between the timber and coal back to allow for normal expansion of the uncut coal. The light? weight yieldable steel arch against the coal back gave inadequate support to control convergence, which in a disturbed area sometimes occurred with explosive violence. This exposed the machine operator to a hazardous condition, since a satisfactory solution could not be found, the company discontinued the use of the continuous borer.

The primary objective of this Bureau of Mines research was to measure the size distribution of respirable quartz collected at metal mines, nonmetal mines, and processing plants to select the best reference standard for use in quantifying quartz in mine and plant dust samples. The secondary objective was to size all the nonquartz particles collected at the same sites. Particle size measurements were made on 29 samples using a scanning electron microscope in the backscatter mode of operation, interfaced with an image analysis system. The Mine Safety and Health Administration, Denver, CO, provided the 29 samples, which were collected at mines and processing plants in 19 states. The accumulated particle size measurements indicate that NBS 1878, minus 5-f.lm Hin-U-Sil, and minus 5-f.lm Supersil would be preferred over Silver Bond B as reference standards for most quantitative determinations by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectrometry. The respirable dust samples collected at sand plants, however, would be better served by a new reference standard having a quartz particle size distribution of approximately 2.2 um, as none of the four existing reference standards matched closely with them. Commercially available NBS 1878 and minus 5-um Hin-U-Sil CQuid be used as reference standards for 28 of the 29 samples studied in this investigation.

Regulatory processes associated with development of major mining operations in Alaska and British columbia were evaluated using specific case studies. Included were one hard rock mine in Alaska (Red Dog Mine), one hard rock mine In British Columbia (Snip Mine), and one offshore gold dredging project in Alaska (WestGold SIMA). Based on a comparison of the three case studies, it became clear that the primary incentives for cost effective permitting are: 1) early and continuing coordination of proposed project plans, designs and schedules with key regulatory agencies and local area residents and 2) development of a sufficient level of baseline information on air quality, water quality, wetlands, endangered species, fish and wildlife, and socia-cultural conditions to support the required permit application. The U.S. permitting process worked in much the same way as the Canadian permitting process. Disincentives of mine permitting include high initial costs for baseline data gathering. However, a relatively high early investment resulted in more efficient permit acquisition and reduced long-term monitoring requirements. A common problem Identified was the inadequate supply of trained agency personnel with the requisite technical and permitting experience. This sometimes resulted in poor decisions and unnecessary changes in project plans and schedules.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research on preparing submicrometer titanium nitride (TiN) powder as a substitute for tungsten carbide (WC) in cutting tools and wear-resistant parts. Earlier research on a small scale was expanded to include a larger reactor. The TiN powder was produced by contacting titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4) with anhydrous ammonia (NH3) in the presence of Mg at 1,100° C. The powder was collected in an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) filled with ultra-high-purity (UHP) Ar. All collected powder was thermal vacuum distilled to remove Mg and magnesium chloride (MgCl2), leaving the purified TiN. Powder handling and purification procedures were conducted to assure low oxygen content in the powder product. Oxygen content in the distilled TiN powder product was as low as 0.40 wt pct. Nitrogen averaged near 22.0 wt pet with a high of 22.4 wt pct. The purified powder product had an average median particle diameter of 0.14 µm with a standard deviation of 0.09 µm.

"INTRODUCTION North Carolina has been the leading producer of mica in the United States, accounting for roughly 50 percent of the Nation's output. The producing area is a belt some 100 miles in width lying in the Mountain and Piedmont sections in the western part of the State. Ashe, Watauga, Avery, Mitchell, Yancey, Buncombe, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Transylvania, Rutherford, Cleveland, and Lincoln Counties supply the bulk of production, while small amounts have been produced in Gaston, Catawba, Burke, Wilkes, Yadkin, Stokes, and Person Counties.To assist the operators and expedite the production of mica during the recent emergency, the Bureau of Mines drilled four of the more promising mica properties in this State. The results of this exploratory program are recorded in this report.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This paper briefly describes the progress in mine safety in the United States, with emphasis on recent events that have followed since the explosion at the Sago Mine in January 2006. Legislation following the mine accidents last year and areas of work carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) related to the accidents are discussed. American coal production in 2006 was 1,150 million short tons. Most of this coal is consumed domestically, with annual exports of coal about 50 million tons. One third of annual production is produced at surface mines and the rest from underground. This coal is produced by about 82,000 miners working at 1,400 coal mines. Major improvements in coal mine safety have been made in the US since the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977. The fatal injury rate in underground coal mines between 1977 and 2004 was reduced by 47.8% to 0.036. The annual number of fatalities dropped from 112 to 14 during that period. Likewise, the non-fatal days-lost injury rate was reduced by 42.6% from 10.87 to 6.24. The improvements in mine safety during this period can be seen in the graph of underground coal mine explosion fatalities and injuries from 1980 to present, which is shown in Figure 1. Between 1984 and 1993 (9 year period) there were 5 explosions and one major mine fire, for a total of 55 fatalities. Over the seven year period from 1993 to 1999 there were no fatalities from coal mine fires and explosions. However, in the six years since 2000 there have been 5 explosions and one fire, which have caused 37 fatalities. [ ]

This report updates an accounting of mines and prospects in the Seafoam mining district, Custer County, Idaho, begun during mineral appraisal of the Idaho Primitive Area. Thirty-two mine and prospect locations have been added to the Bureau's Mineral Industry Location Subsystem (MILS) data base as a result of initial phases of mineral appraisal of the River of No Return Wilderness; most previously known locations were field checked and the updated information added to the data base. The district's major deposits include polymetallic fissure veins of gold-silver-lead-zinc-copper hosted by granodiorite and quartz monzonite which have been intruded by dikes ranging in composition from rhyolite to dacite, and vein type replacements of silver-lead-zinc-copper hosted by calcareous xenoliths imbedded in major intrusives. These deposits may be related to the intrusion of the Rapid River pluton or the Casto pluton. The dominant northwest structural trend is parallel to an aeromagnetic high, a weak gravity salient, and the Blue Bunch Mountain dike swarm.

MERCURY, also widely known as quicksilver, ranks tenth in quantity in world output of nonferrous metals. However, its unusual and desirable combination of properties- liquid liquidity at ordinary temperatures, high density, uniform volume expansion, electrical conductivity, ability to alloy readily, high surface tension, chemical stability, and toxicity of its compounds -gives mercury an industrial and military importance out of proportion to the small physical size of the production industry. Although mercury has been known and used for over 20 centuries, until the 16th century consumption was small and chiefly in medicine. Since then mercury's applications have paralleled scientific advancements, kind current principal uses of mercury are in electrical apparatus, industrial and control instruments, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and the electrolytic prepa¬ration of chlorine and caustic soda. Other materials may be substituted for mercury in come applications; yet, for those uses that require mercury's unusual combination of physical and chemical properties, there is no ideal substitute.

The economy of Belize continued to show a very slight but still positive growth during 1986. The gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated to have been about $164 million,2 almost the same as those of 1984 and 1985. Foreign investors looked favorably on Belize because it had remained isolated from the sometimes turbulent political and social strife elsewhere in Central America. Reportedly, in late 1986, Guatemala had decided not to pursue its claim to Belizean territory and to give full recognition to that country. Discussions were to be held regarding any matters of mutual concern. New investment possibilities were oriented toward agriculture or manufacturing endeavors. Except for some interest in petroleum exploration, the minerals sector remained limited to the quarrying of construction-related materials.

To improve communication among Government, industry, and academic researchers in the field of thermodynamics, the Federal Bureau of Mines sponsored a Workshop on Techniques for Measurement of Thermodynamic Properties in August 1979. Participants at the workshop presented 33 papers on the subjects of temperature measurement and control, general calorimetric techniques, low-temperature calorimetry, high-temperature calorimetry, galvanic cells, ionic solutions, and heterogeneous phase equilibria. A special invited lecture was presented by E. F. Westrum, Jr., on the resolution of lattice heat capacity. This Information Circular comprises the proceedings of the workshop and includes the texts of papers presented and discussion by attendees.

MINING LAW OF ALABAMA The law governing, and regulating the operation of coal mines in Alabama was enacted in 1911 and amended or revised in 1923, 1925, 1930, and 1935. The original law and subsequent revisions were progressive steps in safeguarding the health and safety of underground employees.

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth report of investigations dealing with the cooperative tests between the Bureau of Mines and industry on the use of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel 3/ the second with its use in acid electric steel practice, 4/ and the third with its use in low-carbon basic open-hearth steelmaking. 2/ A résumé of those investigations E7 appeared in the magazine STEEL. 5/ The present report deals with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of four types of stainless steel and the new Timken 16-25-6 alloy. The Bureau of Mines supplied The Timken Roller Bearing Co. with 62,000 pounds of electrolytic manganese for use in the tests.The electrolytic manganese was produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant, Boulder City, Nev., by the process developed by the Bureau and described in Bulletin 463, Operation of Electrolytic Manganese Pilot Plant, Boulder City, Nev., by J. H. Jacobs. J. W. Hunter, W. H. Yarroll, P. E. Churchward, R. G. Knickerbocker, R. W. Lewis, H.A. Heller, and J. H. Linck. The workcarried out under the direction of R. S. The hot-gas-recycle process, for the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide, was investigated in a 12-inch-diameter reactor. Initially because the distribution of gas was poor, hotspots developed in the catalyst bed. After the velocity profile of the gas flowing through the bed was studied, the method of packing the catalyst was altered. Because this change improved the distribution of gas, temperature control was excellent. The l2-inch-diameter reactor was operated successfully in the synthesis of gaseous and liquid fuels. When high-Btu gas was synthesized in two stages, parallel-plate assemblies of Raney nickel were almost as active as granular Raney nickel in the second reactor. The pressure drop through the second reactor, however, was reduced 90 percent by the use of these assemblies.
