The iron ore from Yichang in China assaying 41.64% Fe and 1.02% P is a low grade and high phosphorus oolitic hematite ore. The separation of iron minerals from gangue minerals in the ore by conventional processing techniques is ineffective owing to their close similar properties. The modification of iron minerals by microwave-assisted reduction was investigated in order to improve separability of the ore. The effects of microwave-assisted reduction on the subsequent low intensity magnetic separation and floatation were examined. The results show that the main factors affecting the reduction and separation process are grinding size, reduction temperature and reductant. Fine grinding of the microwave-treated ore to smaller than 0.074mm was found to be imperative due to the tiny dissemination characteristics of iron oxide minerals. After magnetizing reduction by microwave heating at 500?, the magnetic concentrate containing 58.36% Fe and 0.67% P can be obtained with the Fe recovery of 91.28%. Magnetizing reduction drops the floatability of iron oxide minerals, thus reverse flotation is fit for upgrading the magnetic concentrate to contain 62.13% Fe and 0.21% P with Fe recovery of 81.59%. Compared with present microwave-assisted reduction technique of carbon reductant, using a waste iron powder as reductant is a novel and effective technique without the green house effect caused by the release of CO and CO2. Waste iron powder with a faster response to microwave heating then coke and charcoal can be recovered by magnetic separation in a low cost and plays the role of reductant and microwave heating accelerator.

The objective of this work is to investigate the inadequacies of current CFD based methodologies of model development for predicting combustion behavior of pulverized coal in furnaces. In the present paper, a steady state CFD model was used for in-depth analysis of pulverized coal combustion. The model accounts for turbulence, coal combustion, convective and radiative heat transfer and motion of coal particles. It also uses coal combustion models to account for important processes such as devolatilization, combustion of char and the evolution of fuel nitrogen during coal combustion. The model predicts fluid flow, heat transfer, progress of combustion and pollutant formation (NOx, etc.). The model uses several parameters, which need to be tuned with experimental data, which is not only limited in quantity but also insufficient in detail. Various existing methodologies like part calibration method for tuning of the parameters are discussed. In the present work, the parameters associated with coal combustion models were tuned and validated with published data obtained from an experimental furnace using one such part calibration methodology. The results clearly show that the model predictions differed with the experimental data not only quantitatively but also qualitatively. These discrepancies were attributed to part calibration methodology. A detailed parametric study was carried out to demonstrate the importance of parameters from various classes, namely, combustion kinetics, heat transfer, process and geometry parameters, and CFD model parameters. This investigation clearly indicates that parameters from different classes have significant effect on combustion behavior. The discrepancies in current methodology are discussed and a need for comprehensive methodology is highlighted. Gold extraction using iodide leaching from refractory carbonaceous gold ores was studied. Thermodynamic analysis of iodide leaching chemistry had been carried out. Eh-pH diagram of Au-I2-I--H2O leaching system showed that the coordinating active forms from iodides were I3- and I-, while the major coordinate compound formed during iodide leaching was AuI-. For leaching parameters optimization, technological parameters such as I2 concentration, I2 :I- ratio, oxidation assisting agents, liquid/solid ratio, and leaching duration were studied. The leaching results showed that the average Au leaching rate reached 91% and 92% for oxidized ore and roasted primary ore respectively. Leaching process proceeded in weekly acidic or neutral slurry at ambient temperature; the leaching duration was 4 hours. After that gold was extracted from the pregnant liquor by activated carbon adsorption ? desorption ? electrowinning process. Gold recovery was over 93% in the adsorption process, while the gold recovery in electrowinning process was about 95%, provided that the initial gold concentration is 40mg/L or larger. For iodine regeneration it is enough to add hydrogen peroxide in excess into the filtrate after gold electrowinning, all the iodides existing in the solution in any forms would be precipitated in the form of elemental iodine.

In this paper, the application of the metallurgical residue produced from oceanic cobalt-rich crusts leaching process is studied in the area of wastewater treatment. The modification of the sulfuric acid leached residue and the adsorption behavior behaviour of heavy metal ions such as (Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), Co(II), As(III)) in the waste-water on the surface of the residue are investigated. The rate of adsorption efficiency of heavy metal ions in the wastewater on the modified sulfuric acid leached residue is investigated. It is showed that when the initial pH value of wastewater containing heavy metal ions including Pb(II), Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and As(III) range from 1.4 to 1.9, with the use of the modified leached residue, As(III) ion can be selectively separated from wastewater, and the separation efficiency can reach 90%~100%. The adsorption efficiency is affected by pH, reaction time, amount of adsorbent and the initial concentration of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The results showed that the optimum pH was natural pH value and the absorption equilibrium time was 2 hours. The adsorption efficiency of heavy metal ions increases with the addition of adsorbent and de- creases with the increase of the initial concentrations of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The heavy metal ions polluted wastewater, of which concentration is about 22.5~793.6 mg/L, can meet the national disposal standard for industrial wastewaters in China very well, after 2 hours treated by 3.75~7.50 g/L modified adsorbent at room temperature. Standard methods were used to investaged investigate the absorption behaviour between abosorbentabsorbent and metal ions in the wastewater. It is concluded that the adsorption behaviour of Co(II), Mn(II) and As(III) ion fits Freundlich iso-therm, while the adsorption behaviour of Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions fits Langmuir isotherm, and the saturated adsorption amount of the modified adsorbent is about 54.0~336.7mg metal/g?adsorbentabsorbent. It is suggested that the modified sulfuric acid leached residue produced from oceanic cobalt-rich crusts is environmentally attractive and meaningful as absorbent used in heavy metal ions polluted wastewater.

Mineralogical studies indicate the Pt-Pd-Bi-Te class to react poorly on the flotation stimuli and indications are that these minerals are slow floaters. However, recent studies performed on a number of minerals from this class indicated strong interactions with potassium ethyl xanthate resulting in the formation of dixanthogen (only one of several xanthate species). The poor flotation response is not a result of poor interaction of xanthate with the surface. It is proposed that the oxidation products of sulfides in the process water interact with the PGM surface. To test this, the effect of thiosulfate (an important oxidation product of sulfides) was investigated by employing electrochemical measurements and FTIR spectroscopy. The electrochemical investigations indicate no strong effect of thiosulfate on the interaction of xanthate with the minerals surface as well as the reduction of oxygenthiosulfate is likely not responsible for the poor flotation response of these minerals in industrial plants.

More and more researches and applications of organic chelating agents as depressors or activators are carried out in the course of research and application of modern flotation. The paper puts forward the necessary condition of organic chelating agents as depressors or activators by analyzing the chelating chemical performance of organic chelating agents with metal ions and the stability of chelates formed by them; at the same time, puts forward four sufficient conditions of organic chelating agents as depressors or activators according to different hydrophilic capability of the chelates and different performance of depression and activation of organic chelating agents for minerals. Namely, the ?1+1/4? necessary and sufficient conditions of organic chelating agents as depressors or activators are put forward.

Extensive literature exists on the motion of single bubbles and the behaviour of swarms of bubbles. This contribution describes work to track and reveal the motion of individual bubbles in a swarm. The technique is based on high speed cinematography and tracking of multiple moving objects. Image processing algorithms were implemented in Matlab to isolate and measure geometric proper-ties of the bubbles in image sequences recorded at 2 ms interval; and these properties were compiled into a data structure. To track a bubble, the geometric properties and a matching criterion were applied on consecutive pictures to identify the bubble. The bubble trajectory was reconstructed from the data structure for the matched objects. The methodology is briefly described. The new technique was tested for bubbles produced at slot-type spargers (i.e., approximately 2-D swarms) in the presence of two frother types ('strong' and 'weak'). Two observations are discussed: a) that bubble motion in a swarm describes a velocity-size relationship dictated by the dominant bubble size class; and b) that surfactant type influences bubble rise velocity for bubbles in the range 0.1 mm to 4 mm. The latter suggests surface viscosity rather than surface immobilization determines bubble rise velocity.

This paper, by studying the surface properties of pure dolomite minerals separated from representative marine sedimentary rare earth-bearing phosphate ores in Zhijin, Guizhou, aims to study the effect of different anions on the ? potential of dolomite. The research findings showed that the dolomite mineral had a point of zero charge (PZC) at pH 6.5, and the PZC shifted towards lower pH values with addition of anion SiO32- and PO43-. "Environmental concerns necessitate the recycling of process water within mining operations. Given that recycled water is chemically different from fresh water, and collectors are added such that they adsorb at the liquid-particle interface, changes in the aqueous phase are expected to affect collector adsorption. A Finnish nickel-copper ore was floated in synthetic plant waters of varying ionic strengths and plant waters obtained at Boliden Kevitsa Mine, with aerophine and sodium isopropyl xanthate as collectors. Of the tested waters, the copper thickener overflow was the least conducive to xanthate adsorption and valuable mineral recovery. The nickel thickener overflow, standard process water, and raw water were the most conducive to xanthate adsorption. For the raw water and nickel thickener overflow, increased adsorption correlated with increased valuable mineral recovery. Further, recycling xanthate retained in water affected the selectivity of the collector and hence the concentrate grades.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a separation process that exploits the differences in the surface properties of the particles being separated. The efficiency of separation is dependent on the degree of hydrophobicity achieved by the particles meant to be floated, which are, in most cases, valuable minerals. The hydrophobicity is in turn dependent on the adsorption of the chosen collector onto the surfaces of the floated particles (Fuerstenau, 1984; Taggart and Hassialis, 1946). Empirical findings suggest that species dissolved in solution strongly influence collector adsorption and overall flotation response (Fuerstenau and Chander, 1986). Due to environmental concerns, it is becoming more pertinent for mining plants to recycle process water and hence limit the usage of potable water. There is an interest to ensure minimal discharge of plant water into the environment, as this water is typically polluted with process reagents that may render it toxic (Levay et al., 2001).Recycled water, however, has been shown to adversely affect flotation. Reagent efficiency can be reduced due to increased suspended solids. A loss of mineral recovery can occur due to competitive adsorption between reagents and other dissolved species, loss of reagents due to precipitation, and unwanted reactions. Further, a reduction in grade can occur due to non-selective coating of reagents on valuable and gangue minerals, and hydrophobic coating of microbiological material on gangue, causing unwanted flotation. Yet despite these drawbacks, water reuse has the advantages of minimal fresh water use and reduced reagent consumption by recovering the unconsumed reagents retained in wastewaters (Bruckard et al., 2011; Levay et al., 2001; Shengo et al., 2016; Slatter et al., 2009)."

Cenospheres is a sandlike hollow sphere component of the fly ash that is collected in coal-burning electric power generating plants. Metal coated particles have been widely used in industries. Magnetron sputtering method which was used to coat copper film on the surface of the cenospheres is a widely used coating technique in large surface metal coating. A newly designed equipment is used to make the fine particle coating can be carried out because the fine particle is hard to disperse and it must make the particle keep moving to let every direction of the particle be coated. The copper film coated is compact, smooth, even and without uncoated spots under the optical microscopy and SEM. The film has good affinity to the cenosphere surface. The film does not separate with cenoshpere surface even when the cenosphere is crushed. The XRD, SEM, XPS, SPM was used to study the copper film characteristic. It is shown that using this newly designed magnetic sputtering equipment can coat high quality copper nanofilm on the cenoshpere surface.

The flotation of pyrite which be pretreated by electrochemical ways under external controlled voltages in different pH is explored. The floatability of pyrite is increased indistinctively after being pretreated in acidic and xanthate environment; Whereas, it is increased obviously between 400~800 millivolt in alkaline and xanthate condition. The reason for higher recovery of pyrite is that oxida-tion reaction, which results in S0 and S02, takes place on its surface, and that ethyl xanthate is oxi-dized into dixanthogen. In the meantime, the kinetics and mechanism is also studied.

"The recovery of copper and iron from carbonaceous sulfide ore is of economic and environmental interest despite its processing difficulty. Hydrometallurgical methods can be used to concentrate sulfide metals of these hard-to treat ores in a simple and eco-friendly manner. In this study, high pressure acid leaching process was comprehensively studied to dissolve metals from an ore with organic carbon and carbonaceous gangue material using autoclave equipment. The sample used for the experiment was reduced to an average particle size of 75 µm after undergoing flotation to reduce carbonaceous gangue minerals. A comparative study on two leaching reagents of sulfuric acid and iron sulfate and their dosage was used to observe dissolution of copper and iron. Other parameters of temperature (90-170 0C), solid-liquid ratio (1:10, 1:5, 1:3 and 1:1) were investigated through kinetic studies to access the influence of organic carbon and carbonaceous material on recovery of copper and iron. Materials balancing analysis was used to evaluate the efficiency of metal dissolution. The effects of parameters on leaching rate and concentration was demonstrated. Results obtained from the experiment indicated low concentrations of copper and iron in pregnant leached solutions, which was attributed to acid consumption by organic carbon and carbonaceous material in feed. However, the high efficiency rates of 92.4% and 86.3 % for copper and iron respectively in sulfuric acid can be concluded that leaching of concentrates of carbonaceous ore is possible provided system control on type of acid, pH and temperature. The purpose of this research is important in understanding mechanism involved in dissolution of copper and iron in concentrates of carbonaceous ore and marks an improvement in leaching of highly contaminated ores."

Anglo American Platinum practices fine grinding in its processing plants to enhance the liberation of valuable minerals. If the fine particles of valuable minerals generated during fine grinding are not recovered during the flotation process, this could significantly contribute to the overall losses. This study examines the flotability of fine moncheite (PGE mineral) particles in a controlled environment (moncheite size distribution, concentration and liberation). A barren Norite ore ground to 40% and 80% passing 53µm was spiked, with four different size fractions of moncheite (-5, -10+5, -25+10 and -53+25µm) in order to evaluate the effect of particle size on flotation. The investigation also included the effect of energy input and collector dosage on the flotation of two moncheite size fractions, namely -5µm and -10+5µm. The results showed that the moncheite particle size has a significant impact on flotation. Coarse particles (-53+25µm) showed the highest Pt flotation kinetics and overall recoveries. The -5µm size fraction of moncheite could also be recovered by flotation, however, at a lower rate compared to the other size classes investigated. The increased collector dosage of 300g/t at the finer Norite grind of 80% passing 53µm enhanced the flotation rate of the -5µm size fraction of moncheite when compared to the lower collector dosage of 150g/t. The higher energy input during laboratory flotation, at an impeller speed of 1000rpm also increased the flotation rate of the -5µm size range, however, at a lower concentrate grade, when compared to the lower impeller speed of 700rpm. More favourable Pt flotation kinetics data was obtained for the -53 +25µm size fraction of moncheite at the fine Norite grind when compared to the coarse Norite grind. "The major ilmenite reserves are located in India at Chavara (CH), Manavalakurichi ( MK) and Chatrapur, Orissa (OR). India stands first in terms of ilmenite reserves, which are estimated to be 278 million tonnes out of which, 142 million tonnes are processable. Mineralo-chemical analysis shows that Chavara ilmenite is the most weathered one with about 60% TiO2 while Chatrapur is the least weathered with about 50% TiO2. Co-existence of ilmenite with pseudorutile, rutile and haematite is observed in substantially varying amounts in the three deposits. It is observed that the tropical weathering rather than the source rock difference has apparently played an important role in imparting major compositional and structural dissimilarities among ilmenites in different places.In processing of ilmenite through the Becher process, aeration rusting of pre-reduced ilmenite is found to be the rate limiting step thus, affecting the productivity of the process. Investigations have proved that the addition of some organic compounds such as glyoxal, sucrose etc., to the system accelerates the reaction to such an extent that the rusting time has been reduced to less than half.A new route of processing ilmenite for synthetic rutile has also been developed in which, ilmenite is carbothermally reduced and then processed through plasma route. The slag thus obtained is processed further to get high-grade synthetic rutile, metallic iron and high purity iron oxide. The process has been scaled up in a continuous moving bed plasma reactor. It is technologically and economically more viable where, all the iron values are recovered as salable byproducts. This paper describes the salient features of the technologies developed for the beneficiation of ilmenite to synthetic rutile."

"In order to improve recovery efficiency of iron minerals from iron ore tailings and to reduce its connected environmental pollution, this article investigated the reducing roasting of iron ore tailing in a laboratory fluidized magnetization roasting reactor to optimize the roasting method and conditions. The examined parameters included roasting temperature, roasting time and reducing atmosphere. The parameters evaluating magnetizing roast efficiency and theoretical value were determined. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was used to investigate the conversion of iron phase after roasting. The results show that the best magnetizing roast conditions are roasting temperature of 540?, holding time of 15min, and CO concentration of 20%. The magnetization conversion ratio of roasting products is over 80%, under the best magnetic separation condition, the concentrate grade of iron is 65.61 % and the recovery of iron is 83.77 %. The XRD analysis shows that Fe exists in hematite and siderite before roasting and exists in magnetite after roasting. The technique not only recovers the iron minerals from tailings with good economic benefit, but also reduces the environmental pollution of tailings accumulation.INTRODUCTION Iron ore tailings are the solid wastes generated during the beneficiation process of iron ore concentration and are one of the main pollution concerns in the mining industry (Das et al., 1996). Continuous development of the iron and steel industry has led to the increasing amount of iron ore tailings; there are over 300 million tons of iron ore tailings discharged per year (Rao et al., 2016). The huge amount of stockpiled iron ore tailings brings a series of environmental and social problems. Comprehensive utilization of iron ore tailings can not only reduce environmental load but also conserve resources, promoting sustainable development of the society. In recent years, iron ore tailings as secondary resources have received considerable attention in many countries in the word and numbers of studies on utilization of iron ore tailings were carried out, such as recycling the valuable minerals (Datta et al., 1996; Jia et al., 2013; Panda et al., 2018), used in construction material compositions as alternative source of raw materials (Das et al., 2012; Zhou et al., 2012; Luo et al., 2016) and other utilization. The iron minerals were recovery by magnetization roasting (Rao et al., 2016; Yang et al., 2013; Yang et al., 2011) and flotation (Kumar and Mandre, 2016). By comparison the reduction roasting has more advantages, but it was found that the conventional roasting equipment was inefficient, high energy consumption and un-economically applied on an industrial-scale."

With rapid development of Chinese iron & steel industry, it is of significance to intensify the utilization of domestic complex iron ore resources. The tin, zinc-bearing complex iron ores are typical polymetallic and intractable ones because of the complicated intergrowth relations among the multi-elements, and they have not been efficiently utilized, presently. Based on the thermodynamic analysis of iron, tin and zinc oxides reduction by CO, the technological conditions of tin and zinc recovery and pellets preparation from tin, zinc-containing iron concentrates by selective reduction roasting are studied and a new comprehensive utilization process is developed in this investigation. Under the optimum conditions, the tin and zinc volatilization is respectively in excess of 80% and 70%, and the compression strength of roasted pellet is more than 2500 N/P. Moreover, the residual tin and zinc in the finished pellets is below 0.06%. The finished pellets can be used as high quality iron-making burdens for large-scale blast furnace.

It is difficult to analyse the economics without an integrated view of mine transactions, stockpile inventories, process flows and assays. The lack of integration of mining and metallurgical information with sufficient detail to analyse and act is a problem. However, to take action requires real time information from manufacturing assets, corrected for gross errors from trucks, shovels, conveyors, faulty sensors, bad instrument calibration. Validation methods use process models to identify inconsistent information in the case of corrupt actionable information. This paper presents new strategies that transform the data into business information for continuous improvement and optimization. This technical presentation will review recent implementations enabling large metallurgical complexes to improve their data quality for overall production and energy management. A competence center emerges as an enabler for implementing operational intelligence. The evolution of Web services to troubleshoot plant information and to collaborate at the enterprise level is presented.

"This paper reports the hydrometallurgical treatment of gravity concentrates of gold samples and outcrops associated with graphite ores obtained from:- flotation tailings of crystalline graphite minerals- outcrop samples of graphitic rock associated with auriferous minerals and free gold located in the Villa Union district and surrounding areas - La Rioja Province - Argentina.Previous studies of the flotation potential of crystalline graphite minerals failed to consider the presence of noble metals.The samples represent a mineralized zone of crystalline graphite which is distributed in different formations with a NE - SW trend in Maz, Punta Colorada and Las Ramaditas hills, covering an area of about 300 square kilometers.The most important variables affecting the leaching process, such as grain size, mineralogical species, reagent consumption, and so on, were previously studied. (Weiss, L.1985)On the basis of the present study results, the possible definition of an economically viable mineralization will be analyzed to define an auriferous district."

"IsaMill™ has been in operation in the recent past for fine grinding of low grade ores to extract non-ferrous minerals. IsaMill™, typically, consists of a series of uniformly spaced identical disks mounted on a rotating shaft which is encased in an outer shell. The mill offers high energy efficiency for fine grinding and an inherent scalability. But, it encounters certain operational challenges such as non-uniform distribution of grinding media coupled with high wear rate of the disks and solid walls of the mill at specific locations—which adversely affect the mill performance. To circumvent these operational challenges, design modification of the disks through heuristics, by introducing a reduced diameter disk (RDD) at specific locations, is a common practice in industry. But there is no systematic scientific study in this regard. In the current work, we developed a discrete element method (DEM) based model and simulated for the IsaMill™ operation to study the effect of RDD on the efficiency of the mill and wear rate of the solid walls and disks. Since the first set of disks experience the high wear rate due to the high loading of the charge, the RDD was introduced at the first two disks. The simulations were performed at different diameters of the RDDs and at different media loadings. The performance of the mill was analyzed based on the power consumption, the wear rate on disks and the distribution of media particles inside the mill. Besides, the performance variables such as mean velocity of media particles and total impact energy provided useful insights into the milling operation. It was observed that the reduction in disk diameter yields lower wear rate of the disks at the cost of decrease in power draw at a constant high media loading. Whereas, when the media loading was decreased, the amount of wear and power drawn was comparable for both the most reduced and least reduced disk diameters. Therefore, there is an optimum choice of RDD for a given mill loading to maximize the mill performance while reducing the wear rate of the disks."

In view of the shortage of soft water all over the Middle East countries, seawater may be used to replace the fresh water in flotation beneficiation. The flotation process required about 7 m3 of fresh water/ ton ore. This article aimed to study the effect of seawater cations and anions on the flotation process of four important mineral commodities. The adsorption of collector, zeta-potential, zero point of charge and floatability of pure minerals were studied. The individual effects of different cations and anions that are predominant in seawater, within their more or less actual concentrations were studied on individual mineral and on groups of them. The troublesome Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions, in the anionic circuit could be controlled by soda ash addition to the pulp before the anionic collector. The addition of sodium silicate improved the floatation selectivity of mineral mixtures and natural ore. At the optimum conditions the calcareous phosphate ore yielded a concentrate recovery of 83% with a grade of 34% P2O5, with 0.61%MgO, which from an ore assaying (25.3% P2O5 and 9.4% MgO).
