Material handling is an essential part of the aggregate and mining industries. Mixing and blending of granular material can affect the grading and particle size distribution of the material leaving the system. Segregation and variability can cause problems in the downstream process while insufficient capacity will disturb upstream processes. Process plants utilize surge bins for handling recycle streams of material and act as a buffer for the process. The flow through the surge bin is usually controlled by a simple PID controller or PID controller in combinations with a plant-wide controller. Even though the surge bins play an important role of smoothening out the plant and creating a steady operating condition they are seldom included in plant simulations. This can lead to a number of problems in the form of decreased plant capacity, plant lockdown, and even operation units malfunctioning. The main objective of this study is to investigate the dynamic behavior in surge bins and develop a model more suitable for representing this behavior, which can occur during operation, for dynamic simulations. The proposed model adopts vertical layers which allow for flows between segments depending on the level of neighboring segments. This enables both the representing of segregation within the system and gives an indication on the effects from different inlet- and outlet placements. The proposed model was developed in MATLAB/Simulink and validated against an actual bin with the total capacity of 660 m3 in platinum ore application. With the new bin model significantly higher fidelity and more accurate dynamic, simulation results were achieved. Fluidised bed drying is currently receiving much attention as a dewatering option during the beneficiation of fine (defined here as between 1 mm and 2 mm particles) coal. Apart from concerns about safety and combustion, the operating costs can be high if very high gas or air temperatures are used. The aim of this study was to investigate the removal of moisture from fine coal by using air at a lower temperature (25 - 55°C) within a controlled environment by lowering of the relative humidity of the air. It was firstly proven that fluidization has a major advantage over non-fluidized beds, with regards to drying rate and final moisture content. Hereafter several parameters that influence the dewatering rate and final moisture content were tested, from which it was concluded that the relative humidity of air acts as the largest driving force for dewatering. Parameters tested included relative humidity, temperature and coal composition. Energy balances showed a positive nett energy increase in the dried coal during combustion when related to the energy input during drying. In comparison with thermal drying technologies, fluidized bed drying was proven to be less energy intensive. It was therefore shown that this is a viable technology for the dewatering of fine coal.

Fine grinding of crystalline graphite was conducted using a dry attrition mill with a vacuum system to investigate the characteristics of size reduction. Low pressure and high temperature conditions in the grinding mill were found to greatly improve the efficiency of the size reduction of graphite. Natural flaky graphite of .100 mesh was ground into sub-micron sizes, then over 90% of the product were able to be reduced below 1?without disrupting their crystallinity in a short period of time. Reducing the atmospheric pressure in the grinding environment promotes the removal of chemical species such as oxygen and water molecules adsorbed on the graphite particle, resulting in effective size reduction while maintaining the crystallinity of graphite.

The development of mining projects from discovery, exploration to actual production is a complex and time consuming process. Often poor process plant performance can be attributed to the use of non-representative samples and inadequate and/or unsuitable metallurgical test work when designing flow sheets during project feasibility study stages and specifying process equipment. Samples not representing the ore deposit and inadequate test work may lead to increased project development costs, since expensive test work and engineering may have to be repeated. It should be noted that for higher level engineering studies, larger scale test work is recommended and is a requirement for feasibility level studies. This would apply even if the technology is considered mature and well proven, as each ore body may have its own unique characteristics that, if untested at a larger scale, could result in significant design shortcomings, which will have to be rectified at later stages of the project, usually at significant additional costs

In today?s world, Sustainability is the key issue before the mankind. With the ever-increasing population & unimaginable boost in industrial growth to cope up with a steady increase in demand and fast change in life style of a human being, the natural resources are exploited to such an extent that the very existence of living beings in this earth planet is threatened. In such devastating situation, the concept of Sustainability emerges out as a great savior. This concept focuses on minimum/ judicious use of natural resources, thereby preserving the resources for future generation while meeting the bare minimum requirement of the present generation. For an emerging economy like India, Mining and Mineral based industries form the back bone of our economic development. Thus, sustainability of mining and mineral processing industry has a far reaching impact on sustainable economic development of our nation. While at a macro-economic level, we have to strike a balance between economic development vis-à-vis socio-economic & environmental impacts, Industries have to ensure judicious and frugal use of natural resources by making use of energy efficient plants & machineries and adopting befitting technology for reduction & recycling of waste. In the context of the above, it would be interesting to look into the sustainability measures taken up by National Aluminium company (Nalco) at its Crushing & conveying plant at Panchpatmali Bauxite Mine, which is incidentally Asia?s largest Bauxite Mine. In the backdrop of the above stated facts, in this paper the authors make an attempt to bring out the sustainability issues in areas of energy conservation, environmental impact/pollution vis-a-vis mitigation measures adopted in crusher & conveyor plant of Panchpatmali Bauxite Mine & CSR / peripheral developmental activities undertaken by Nalco to mitigate the socio- economic impacts. "CSIRO Minerals has developed an integrated particle size analysis system for deployment in the grinding circuits of minerals processing plants. The system includes a slurry sampling station, a de-aeration tank and an ultrasonic particle size analyser (UltraPS). The UltraPS analyser is based on ultrasonic attenuation and velocity spectrometry combined with gamma-ray transmission. The technology is applicable to the measurement of 0.1 to 1000 µm diameter particles directly in highly concentrated slurries without dilution. The analyser incorporates a gamma-ray transmission gauge utilising an ultra-low activity radioisotope source that is exempt from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Australian licensing regulations.The UltraPS analyser consists of a submersible probe and an electronics package. The probe can be immersed directly in a minerals processing plant stream if the aeration level in the stream is low. For applications where a de-aerated slurry stream is not available, CSIRO has developed an integrated system that includes a sampling station, a de-aeration tank as well as the UltraPS analyser itself. A schematic drawing of the continuous flow gravity fed system is shown in the figure. A commercial sampling system is used to supply slurry at a rate of 2.5m3/hr to the deaeration tank. The aim of the de-aeration tank is to remove air in the slurry to a level where meaningful particle size measurements can be performed. The tank volume is about 0.2m3, thus giving the slurry flowing through the tank a mean residence time in the tank of approximately five minutes. Tests at a number of concentrators have shown that five minutes is sufficient time for slurry to de-aerate to a level where ultrasonic measurements can be made. The tank incorporates an ultrasonic level detection sensor and flow to the deaeration tank is adjusted based on the level of slurry within the tank. The UltraPS probe is mounted through a flanged section of duct, which is bolted to the bottom of the de-aeration tank."

Crushing plants are widely used around the world as a pre-processing step in the mineral and mining industries and as standalone processing plants in the aggregates industry. Despite automation and different advanced model predictive control, a lot of the process is still managed by operators. The operators affect a lot of the performance. The numbers of the improvement they can achieve are at least as big as the advanced control algorithms?, today. Therefore, it is also important to train the operators so they know how to behave in different situations. Models for crushers and other production units have been developed during the years and the latest add is the different units? dynamic behavior being brought in, which gives the crushing plants dynamic time dependant performance. This can be used as a simulator for operators training. By connecting a Human Machine Interface (HMI) to a dynamic simulator with the models incorporated, a training environment for operators can be achieved. In this paper, a dynamic crushing plant simulator implemented in MATLAB/SIMULINK has been connected to an HMI via a PLC. The HMI is placed in a control room at the university and complemented with monitors showing sequences from the process connected to the simulations, thus creating a realistic control room for training. In the created training environment, the operators can be trained under realistic conditions. Simple training scenarios and how they could be simulated are discussed. Apart from the increased level of knowledge and experience among the operators, the time is an important factor. While a real crushing plant is still being built, the operators to be can already be trained, saving a lot of the commissioning time. Tantalum capacitor is a small-sized and has large capacity, and is indispensable for electric equipment. The demand increases year by year, and a quite large number of used tantalum capacitors is generated. Recovery of tantalum from tantalum condenser is recently important since production of tantalum have not been stable for the price and the quality. However, recovery of tantalum from tantalum-condenser is difficult since tantalum parts strongly cover with the flame retardant resin made of halogenated compound (mold resin). This research investigated recovery of tantalum parts from tantalum condenser using steam gasification with mixed molten carbonate. Mixed molten carbonate (Na2CO3:K2CO3:Li2CO3 = 1:1:1) (3 g) put into the reactor, and heated with electric furnace while flowing nitrogen (160 mL/min) and steam (1 mL/min) warmed by heater. After heating to setting temperature (450 - 650 oC), tantalum condenser (3 g) was put into the reactor, heated for 5-10 min, and then cooled to room temperature to recover the reacted capacitor by filtration after treating with distilled water. At relatively low temperature (550 oC) heating for 10 min, mold resin can be decomposed by using steam gasification with mixed molten carbonate, in comparison with using pyrolysis and steam gasification without carbonate, and decomposition reaction occurred over 500 oC by using steam gasification with mixed carbonate. Recovery of tantalum parts from capacitor is successful using steam gasification with mixed molten carbonate at 530 oC for 5 min, due to the effective decomposition and removal of mold resin from capacitor. Furthermore, most halogen gas generated from decomposition of mold resin can be trapped in molten carbonate not to exhaust halogen gas. These results suggested that recovery process of tantalum parts from used condenser using steam gasification with mixed molten carbonate is expected as a feasible way to recycle the rare metal in electric equipment.

The results of mineralogical?technological studies of PGM mineralization in zoned mafic?ultramafic complexes of the Ural?Alaskan type are given. The most important technological specificity of PGM mineralization hosted in dunites is its occurrence only in the form of free mineral species with predominance of Fe?Pt alloys (ferrous platinum, isoferroplatinum, and tetraferroplatinum). Technological properties, grain size, and good opening of PGM ore in grain size class +80 µm make it possible to concentrate ore using gravity methods with stadial comminution and between cycle separation of relatively large grains and nuggets into high-grade concentrates at the early stage of disintegration. "It has been known for sometime that as wear occurs in tumbling mills there is an associated change in mill throughput. These changes have traditionally been simplistically, attributed to “mill volume effects”. New high fidelity simulation (HFS) tools (involving DEM, CFD and Breakage models) are now giving new “microscale” insights into the complex interactions that occur between evolving lifter/liner profiles and breakage. An illustration of this analysis is shown in Figure 1 below.Here we see that after a new lining is installed (Region I) the wearing process reduces the liner thickness resulting in a larger power draw and an associated higher throughput until Region II is reached. By this point the lifter height is reduced significantly changing charge motion (less cataracting) the power begins to decline, but the comminution efficiency increases with this type of “calmer” breakage environment therefore the throughput continues to increase. In Region III the lifter is no longer providing the minimum required charge lifting action, the power and the throughput both drop off significantly. In the last two stages the behavior is especially complex because throughput is not linearly related to power since grinding efficiency is changing.The study described here shows that these new HFS tools allow the design of wear part profiles which will maximize mill productivity over the entire life of liner/lifter systems. A simple example of such a design procedure is shown involving the selection of a sinusoidal profile for a 34 ft diameter SAG mill.The paper discusses how the principles exposed in this simple example can be applied to search for an optimal profile in which non-standard modifications are allowed to compensate for throughput or wear shortcomings of standard profiles."

Sustainability principles in the minerals industry are now becoming more and more important from the perspective of securing a license to operate and enhancing environmental, economic and social performance. This trend is also setting new challenges for the design and operation of future concentrator plants. It is evident that ore grades are declining and ores are becoming more complex requiring new technology innovations and holistic approach for process optimization. There is a demand for more energy-efficient process technologies especially in comminution that is the major energy consuming unit operation in the process chain. Energy is not only a major source of cost but also contributes significantly to the carbon and environmental footprint. There is also an increasing awareness that more intelligent water management is required for reduction of fresh water consumption and mastering the impacts of process water recycling will cause for process performance. In association with water recycling, tailings disposal is an integral part of concentrator plant representing significant environmental and economic issues to the operation. This presentation will discuss general trends and challenges of future minerals processing plants and how innovative technology solutions and better integration of unit processes in conjunction with intelligent process control would contribute to meeting the sustainability challenges.

"The IMPC 2014 slogan "Optimizing Water and Energy Usage for Sustainable Mining" refers to the ever decreasing availability of fresh water and energy, which has turned out to be a crucial aspect in assuring the competitiveness of the mining sector in Chile and the Andes region in general. The concern for sustainability and the supply of water and energy is nowadays part of the top priorities of mining countries and communities. This is also the case for Antofagasta Minerals. Several years ago its mining group implemented an energy policy based on intelligent, strategic and sustainable management, in order to successfully face the challenges imposed by the market. It is called an intelligent policy because it intends to provide energy through a diversified range of sources, which includes the development of in-house alternatives. It is also a policy focused on efficient energy consumption and one that is strategic. Because it is in line with the characteristics of the mining activity, it is developed for the long term. Finally, what makes the policy sustainable is that it gives priority to energy usage from renewable resources and as such, the required capacities have been developed to generate innovative solutions that respond to the restrictions that characterize the industry today."

"Platinum Australia Limited (“PLA”) is currently undertaking a Feasibility Study into the development of the Panton Platinum Palladium Project located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The Panton Intrusive is a layered, differentiated mafic to ultramafic structurally complex body that has undergone numerous folding and faulting events. This has resulted in a southwesterly plunging synclinal structure some 10 kilometres in length and 3 kilometres wide.High grade PGM mineralisation is hosted within a number of stratiform chromitite reefs within the ultramafic sequence. The focus of the Feasibility Study is on the Top Reef which is situated approximately 150 metres below the mafic/ultramafic interface. The average true width of this reef is approximately 1.2 metres and the reef has a defined resource is 10.1 million tonnes at an average grade of 6.1 g/t PGM + Au.The Palladium to Platinum ratio of the Top Reef is approximately 1.15:1 and the reef also contains an average of 0.4 g/t Au and 0.3 g/t other PGM’s. The Panton ore is considered refractory in nature and standard flotation techniques achieve a PGM + Au recovery of less than 65% with a concentrate grade of less than 100 g/t PGM + Au. As part of the Feasibility Study Platinum Australia in conjunction with their major shareholder Lonmin Plc developed a new metallurgical process which has achieved an overall PGM + Au recovery of approximately 80% into a high grade PGM concentrate which is suitable for feeding direct to a PGM refinery.THE PANTON PROCESSThe Panton Process incorporates a two-stage Milling and Flotation circuit with no cleaning stages to produce a low grade, high recovery flotation concentrate. Typically the concentrate mass constitutes 25% of the feed and has a PGM + Au grade of 25 g/t.This low-grade concentrate is subjected to calcination in a rotary kiln or fluid bed at a temperature of approximately 400 0C for a period of 60 minutes. This step is designed to render the platinum minerals soluble in cyanide and both the temperature and the duration of calcination are critical to the efficiency of the leaching process."

"Zeolites are naturally occurring as hydrated aluminosilicate minerals. They belong to the class of minerals known as “tectosilicates” and are related to the common minerals feldspar and quartz. Seven natural zeolites that occur in large, commercially exploitable deposits, are: clinoptilolite, chabazite, mordenite, phillipsite, erionite, analcite, and ferrierite. Among them, clinoptilolite is the most abundant one and is not the best known, but is one of the more useful natural zeolite. Clinoptilolite [(Na3K3) (Al6Si30O72) 24 H2O] is very closely related to heulandite and is currently being considered for disuse it self as it may just be a variety of heulandite. It differs from heulandite significantly only in its enrichment in potassium and slightly more silica and it is argued that a separate mineral is not needed.There are large zeolite deposits in western part of Turkey. The sample used in this study was taken from the Gördes region of these deposits. Screen, chemical, XRD and mineralogical analyses were used to determine properties of the natural zeolite sample used in this work.According to the size distribution of the sample, it is found that the zeolite sample used in this study is below 1 mm in size and almost 80% of it is below 0.5 mm. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and mineralogical analyses show that the natural zeolite is found to be in the forms of clinoptilolite and heulandite. Clinoptilolite forms as a devitrification product of volcanic glass in tuffs. Quartz, clay minerals, orthoclase, plagioclase, biotite, seruzite-muskovite and epidote were observed as impurities. XRD analysis also shows that the sample contains approximately 58-60% clinoptilolite, 5% quartz, 5% feldspar, 10% smectite, 5- 10% illite and mica and remaining volcanic tuffs. Several types of mineral processing methods were performed in order to remove impurities from the natural zeolite sample to produce high purity zeolite. Gravity separation methods such as shaking table and superpanner were carried out for separating heavy minerals, while high intensity dry magnetic separation was used for discarding magnetic minerals."

"For the cases tested (11 mills with 15 operating conditions), the Bond abrasion test steel media wear rate prediction gives an overall error of 73% and a standard deviation of 192.5%. However, total steel media wear in a given mill (ball or SAG) grinding process is a product of three recognised wear mechanisms -- impact, abrasion, and corrosion. A total media wear model can be defined on the assumption that the effect of each wear mechanism can be independently determined which allows for a total media wear model to be defined as the summation of the wear result of each mechanism (eqn. 1). It is assumed that impact and abrasive media wear is a function of the energy dissipated in impact and abrasion as estimated by a DEM charge motion simulation. Corrosive media wear is assumed to be a function of the media surface area present in a mill.The 3 initial tests developed (steel abrasion wheel, corrosion batch mill, impact chamber) coupled with the impact and abrasion energy spectra from a DEM charge motion simulation produced total steel wear rate results for the same cases as the Bond abrasion test giving an overall error of 0% and a standard deviation of 66.1%. However, if one were to consider the general observation that wear is proportional to energy and maintain the assumption that corrosion is proportional to media surface area then one would realize that the total media wear eqn. (1) can be reduced to eqn. (2). As this is a linear equation and one has, for the same mill, media wear and operating data for three different operating cases, one obtains three equations with three unknowns. This defines a simple matrix manipulation to determine the constants k1, k2 and k3. From the previous data set, we had 6 identical mills grinding the same ore but having different worn liner profiles and charge volume which provided the opportunity to average out the ki values over 20 combinations of 3 cases. With the determined ki values, it was possible to determine a second estimate of the contributions of impact, abrasion and corrosion to total media wear giving an overall error of 0% and a standard deviation of 56%."

The demand for minerals has never been higher. Moreover, the rate at which this demand is growing is unprecedented, and expansions and new mines will be required to fulfill these growing needs. This, in turn requires a skilled engineering workforce that can develop and operate minerals extraction processes to utilise effectively more complex ores. The International Mineral Processing Council (IMPC) has established a Commission on Mineral Processing Education to consider the global challenge of ensuring an adequate supply of well-trained mineral processing engineers. The Commission has, for the past four years, been collecting international information of the recent mineral process engineering supply position and with a view into the near future. The data collected by the international Commission members are as follows: ? Undergraduate student numbers in minerals engineering ? A breakdown of their male/female ratio ? The fraction of the students from each course that enter the minerals industry ? Teaching staff numbers and age profile This data has been collated and analysed, and the findings are presented. It is clear from the analysis that the supply situation is very different in different regions of the world, and that great opportunities exist for targeted recruitment into the industry to meet the future talent demand. Further, an attempt at correlate the supply of minerals engineers based on the local mineral production rate is shown, which shows that there are clear outliers.

"Dry coal dressing was popular during the 1950.s and 60.s in many parts of the world. The devices mainly used were air jigs and air tables.The increase in ash and moisture content of run-of-mine coals due to the wide advanced mechanisation of mining mechanisation during and after this period led to that pneumatic devices being unable to treat run-of-mine coals with the desired efficiency. Since the 1960.s almost all new coal preparation plants have been based on wet processes that are highly efficient in terms of coal recovery and their ability to handle damp and sticky run-of-mine coals. (Frankland, 1995)However, water is becoming increasingly costly and the disposal of fine products, containing most of the water, is an environmental concern. There would be significant cost savings and a lower total energy consumption if coal could be cleaned dry. Efficient dry coal treatment would be an interesting solution in desert, arid or cold areas.In Germany one dry coal dressing plant is in operation. The process and the advantages and disadvantages are presented below.Further on new developments in the field of dry density separation of coal are reviewed and analysed. Test results of new dry coal separation methods e.g. new developed air jig and magnetic separator are reported."

"Ores of ferrous metals traditionally make up the bulk of recoverable reserves of solid minerals, and iron ore concentrates - in the processing and consumption. To obtain concentrates, three main methods are used: dry and wet magnetic separation, gravity and flotation. But even their integration into complex developed schemes with finishing operations often do not solve the problem of obtaining high-quality concentrates, which are necessary for powder metallurgy and electric steelmaking. Increasing the iron content in the concentrate by removing harmful impurities is the goal of this work. The possibility of reducing the operations of wet magnetic separation twice and completely eliminating concentrating operations in ball mills from the scheme of operations has been established. Selective leaching agents for each type of iron ores have been created, allowing to obtain concentrates with an iron content of not less than 68-69% and negligible concentrations of harmful impurities. Methodical recommendations for long-term storage of bioreagents in the active state, their immobilization and preparation in industrial conditions at the enterprise Nedropolzovatelja are developed. The proposed biotechnology, which allows to obtain high quality iron and conditional concentrates for harmful impurities, is protected by patents (RU 2537684 ""Method for fine-tuning of high-sulfur magnetite concentrate"" for magnetite ores and Pat. RU 2599068. For the industrial implementation of the new technology, organizational and technological measures have been developed in the system with Road maps for types of ores. The developed technology makes it possible to condition noble metal, tin, tungsten, nickel and other concentrates in harmful impurities such as arsenic, antimony, mercury, sulfur, copper, zinc, iron, phosphorus, manganese, in total 30 components that pass into solution under the influence of bioreagents.INTRODUCTION Consumption of various metals is steadily increasing every year, the volume of mining is constantly increasing. Ores of ferrous metals traditionally make up the bulk of the recoverable reserves of solid minerals. Enrichment technologies for iron-containing ores are reduced to the combination of three main methods: wet and dry magnetic separation, gravity and flotation. But even the use of complex advanced technological schemes often does not lead to the production of high-quality concentrates suitable for metallurgical processing. In this case, either lapping operations or effective technical and technological solutions are used in the main enrichment cycle. "Within the next few years major changes in mobility are expected. Increasing numbers of electric powered cars, electrobikes and E-Scooters define the transport sector. Recently lithium based traction batteries as storage medium have led into matrurity of series production combining high electrical efficiencies with low weights and compact dimensions. Due to the relatively young development with lithium batteries utilization, only few investigation were conducted regarding their recycling. Conventional battery recycling processes can not be applied due to differences in design and chemistry. So an automated disassembly and processing procedure for lithium traction batteries has been developed in the R/D-project ""Li-WERT"". Instead of complete smelting of the batteries without pretreatment, an automated disassembly and specific treatment of the material streams was realised, adjusted to the needs of the subsequent recovery technologies. A higher quality, with reduced expenses for the separation of fine-grained or fused material mixes, can be obtained for the individual components. The automated disassembly using an industrial robot significantly reduces dangers for the operating crew. The selective disassembly and beneficiation allows full recovery of the fractions. The batteries will be disassembled to cell level by the industrial robot. Anodes, cathodes, and separation layers are isolated and processed. The technology is designed, that no waste is generated for disposal. The pelletised cathode coating and the other separated metals (stainless steel, copper, aluminum) can be used in respective metallurgical plants. Circuit boards and plug contacts are also coveted secondary raw materials for reuse. The process is modular and offers high flexibility, e. g. for new battery types/ sizes by quick adjustment of the robot and tool change. Adaptation to other cathode materials (e. g. Li[FePO]) is possible. After finishing the R/D-project, a pilot plant for demontage was realised in 2013."
