Within the scope the collaborative research centre 599 (Medical University of Hanover, University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover, University of Hanover) the behaviour of the degradation of magnesium materials as implants are investigated by using animal experiments (rabbits). Thus extruded cylindrical pins from the magnesium alloys MgCa0.8%, WE43 and LAE 442 were implanted intramedullary in the tibiadiaphyses. The implantation duration was 3 and 6 month. After the explantation 3 point bending tests were carried out to investigate the possible changes of the mechanical properties. Clearly changes in dependence of the implantation duration could be determined. The three magnesium alloys show a decrease of the mechanical resistance with an increasing implantation time. To evaluate the degradation process, wich is the reason for the changes, micrographs and element analyses (EDX) have been accomplished after the 3 point bending tests. The micrographs show for all used magnesium alloys corroded surfaces but no preferred corrosion on the grain boundarys. The element analyses show beside a layer which is rich in calcium and phosphorus an agglomeration of rare earth elements in this layer. With these results a using of magnesium alloys as a material for implants can be announced.

ABSTRACT: When exposed to microwaves, rocks containing sulphides adsorb energy preferentially over barren gangue and quickly become warmer with minimal energy consumption. This effect makes subsequent machine sorting of ore from waste rocks or overburden possible using infrared sensing. This paper reports on the 2450 MHz microwave response of a variety of sulphide minerals by mesh size and spatial distribution, as they might occur in ore rocks. The implications for infrared ore sorting are discussed.

It details the crushing, autogenous grinding, flotation and spray drying circuits for the production of a nickel concentrate. "High total and dissolved uranium values were noted in the process water at the Cigar Lake Operation (CLO) during early production start-up period, whereas significant levels of dissolved uranium had not been observed previously at similar operations. The excess dissolved uranium resulted in higher demands on the water treatment plant, along with higher operating costs, environmental risks and some unrealized revenue potential. A species balance indicated that uranium was leaching into solution in the grinding, dewatering, and storage circuits under normal operating conditions. Jet boring, water recycle, ball milling, and the use of Pachuca tanks for ore storage results in a highly oxidative environment, which is favourable to leaching.This paper will outline the testwork performed to identify the conditions under which the uranium leaches into solution and to determine required conditions for uranium precipitation. Maximum uranium leaching was found to occur under normal operating conditions (pH ranging from 7.0 to 8.5); testwork indicated that both lowering and raising the pH can significantly reduce the uranium leaching. Analytical results combined with the batch scale testwork indicate that the uranium solubility is associated with carbonate species in the ore. Uranium precipitation was maximized at pH values greater than 10.5 or less than 6, corresponding well to carbonate leaching and precipitation values from literature. Higher precipitation efficiencies were noted at high pH ranges.As a result of this work, a pH control system has been implemented in the Pachuca storage vessels and thickener prior to water treatment plant on a trial basis. Caustic soda is recommended for pH control due to ease of operation, economic viability and material requirements and downstream constraints."

"Dust samplers are based on different principles. The konimeter is based on the number of particles counted; mining applications are based on routine sampling; and the photometrical evaluation of samples is used after the pre-separation of particles above 5 micron by the mining konimeter. In special cases, the Draeger sampler is used for quantitative analysis. General trends are toward larger samples, concentration on a weight basis, fractionation into size groups by different techniques and an analysis of composition. Standards or TLVs already exist in all industries. Surface industries base their criteria on concentrations and quartz contents in particles below 5 micron. The mining industry uses the tyndalloscope routinely to determine concentrations; concurrent] y, the rock content, as deter-mined by ashing samples, is obtained by konimeter.Threshold limits are related to the rock content in respirable fractions and tyndallometrically determined concentrations. The TL Vs are based empirically on Landwehr's ""dust values,"" as agreed upon with the Mines Inspectorates. Recently, and in accurate sampling, dust samplers have been used that count the dust in two fractions -above and below 5 microns. Mineral composition is determined either for all minerais or just for quartz. In assessing the dust hazard by Landwehr's ""dust values,"" all minerais are taken into consideration; in coal dust sampling, however, only the quartz content is taken into account. Efforts are now being made to co-ordinate the different assessment methods, arriving at uniform MAC values in agreement with those of other countries."

OTML is demonstrating that business and country risk can be managed through effective, respectful partnerships with local communities. OTML?s relationships with the communities of PNG?s Western Province are multifaceted. Communities have borne the brunt of the mine?s environmental impact, yet have benefited enormously from the development that the mine has brought. Importantly, the PNG economy is now the ultimate beneficiary of more than four-fifths of the dividends from the mine, the majority of which are held in trust for long-term sustainable development projects. The paper describes how OTML works with the Western Province communities to create a secure operating environment that recognizes the people?s aspirations for development and self-determination.

"Goldcorp’s Hoyle Pond mine has recently completed several projects which have impacted the overall ventilation system. The project includes extending the Fresh Air Raise (FAR) to depth, development of a new Return Air Raise (RAR), and the installation of new sensors and ventilation controls throughout the mine. Two years after the completion of #2 Winze, the mine is ramping up its ore production to 1,300 tpd (up from 1,100). To ensure safe and profitable production, a reliance upon technology has been needed to provide the required ventilation to the work areas according to the mine plan. To systematically assess the mine’s ventilation in real-time, a significant increase in remote monitoring was required. This included installing additional flow, pressure, temperature and gas sensors. The first step in upgrading the existing monitoring was to purchase airflow and differential pressure monitors and install them in key areas of the mine. This paper presents the process of expanding the monitoring capability at Hoyle Pond mine, the selected equipment and the results of the implementation. The intended goal was to improve safety while minimizing capital and operation costs. The monitors were installed in strategic locations to provide immediate feedback on the impact of changes to the primary ventilation airflows. Comparing the available sensor technologies, installing them and systematically monitoring the ventilation served as a first step towards developing a mine wide Ventilation Control System. In addition, the initial state of the monitoring and control system, with final results and the chosen solution for the mine site, are presented. INTRODUCTION The Hoyle Pond mine is located in the City of Timmins, within the Porcupine mining district, Ontario, which has produced more than 70 million ounces of gold since 1910. Currently, approximately 60% of Porcupine Gold Mines gold production comes from the Hoyle Pond underground mine. Mechanized cut and fill and long-hole mining methods are used to extract the ore. The remainder of the ore comes from the Hollinger Open Pit mine. The Dome Underground mine ceased operations in 2017. Hoyle Pond is currently mining at 1820 meters below the surface and plans to go deeper. The average dry-bulb as wet-bulb temperature underground varies according to the depth and surface conditions which has extremes of –40°C in winter to +30°C in summer. The total airflow volume pushed down from surface is 240 m3/s to accommodate the diesel-powered equipment needed for normal operations. In order to improve the quality of air underground a program has been implemented to use diesel particulate filters, starting with the truck fleet and 6-yard scoops, followed by the intention to implement the rest of the functional diesel-powered equipment and eventually move to electric equipment."

"A scale model was designed to simulate the airborne Barringer INPUT time domain electromagnetic system. The amplitude of the response to a vertical conductive dyke varies considerably with the conductor's thickness conductivity product (TCP). The response increases from a minimum detectable level at a TCP of about 2 mhos, rises to its maximum value at a dyke TCP of 15 mhos and then falls again so that conductors with a TCP exceeding 500 mhos would probably remain undetected. Measurements made with both standard receiver coil configurations (maximum or minimum coupled) indicate comparable effectiveness for both systems, either from the viewpoint of vertical conductor detection or from the viewpoint of discrimination against overburden anomalies."

Site conditions of China?s coal roadways are complex and changeable, and scientific classification of them is the fundamental basis for coal roadway support design, with great significance for ensuring proper roadway service. Upon analysis of the issues, a commentary regarding the research progress on classification of the stability of rocks surrounding coal roadways in China has been achieved from the point of view of classification methods and indexes. The shortcomings and applicable scope of rock stability classification methods related to coal roadways have been analyzed. It has been asserted that combining artificial neural networks with fuzzy mathematics, combining fuzzy mathematics with grey theory, applying new avenues such as support vector machine algorithms or unascertained average classification, and making classification indexes more scientific are future directions for development of rock stability classification for coal roadways.

Introduction Within the last quarter of a century the Lake St. John-Saguenay valley has been converted from a quiet agricultural district to one of the important industrial centres in the Dominion. First there was the expansion -of the pulp and paper industry, and then, starting a little over ten years, ago, the development, in large .blocks, of the enormous hydro-electric power resources of the Saguenay river. Coincident with this power development, the world aluminum industry was rapidly expanding and looking for a new source of cheap power. This was found in the Saguenay valley-and so, in 1925, Arvida was established by the Aluminum Company of Canada as a location for one of the largest aluminum plants in the world. Arvida, an incorporated city comprising an area of some ten square miles, is ideally located on a more or less level plateau about 350 feet above the Saguenay river. Seldom has industry stepped boldly forth and carved out of Nature a community with full city status. The process usually goes through the steps of camp, village, town, and city, involving improper planning or lack of planning; all of which has been avoided at Arvida by starting out in the right way. While this community has only a population of approximately 2,000 at the present time, it is carefully planned for a population many times this figure. Streets, city parks, business and residential sections, have been definitely planned, and, with a City government, proper ordinances were passed at the beginning to ensure the building and maintenance of a model industrial community. As the crow flies, Arvida is about 35 miles due east of lake St. John, and 0 miles west of the St. Lawrence river at Tadoussac. From a shipping standpoint, it is well served by the Canadian National railways, with direct lines to Quebec and Montreal, and by ocean shipping facilities at Port Alfred, which is about 15 miles to the east on the Saguenay river and is served by the Roberval & Saguenay railway. The latter has interchange connections with the Canadian National at Arivda, and also operates a branch line into the city of Chicoutimi.

"The lack of notch ductility in structural steel in general, and in ship plate in particular, has been the object of widespread attention in the metallurgical world since the spectacular collapse of the ill-fated S.S. Schenectady in 1943. Numerous investigations have been carried out, many new tests have been developed, and a vast amount of useful data has been published, with the result that our knowledge is now far more advanced than it was at the time of this disaster. Interest has focused largely on the medium strength steels, and the various factors which cause a normally ductile steel to behave in a brittle manner in the presence of a notch and at relatively .low temperatures have been thoroughly studied.The literature available on high-tensile steels, however, is less extensive and the present paper is intended to supplement this information. Notch toughness tests have been carried out, at the request of the R.C.N., on a high-tensile manganese steel in the form of commercial ship plate. One of the newer tests, the tear test, and the Charpy V-notch impact test, were used to examine the characteristics of plate for the construction of an ice-breaker. About 250 plates, mainly in the thickness range from 11,4 in. to 1 % in., were tested. An an-alysis of the results obtained is presented, certain aspects of the tear test are discussed, and the correlation between the two types of test is studied. On the basis of information available from casualty ships, the plates, with few exceptions, were considered to be satisfactory."

"A four-inch compound water cyclone (CWC) was tested to evaluate its gold recovery characteristics when processing -4.8 mm run-or-pit, placer material. Neutron activated placer gold particles (840 to 37 microns) were used as radiotracers (/98Au) in a closed circuit ewe test loop to determine concentrator recovery; a procedure believed unique to this study. The effect on gold recovery of gold size and shape, feed pulp density, feed pressure, vortex finder clearance (VFC), ewe cone type, top-size of the feed solids, presence or absence of heavy minerals in the feed, and the quantity of-37 micron slimes in the feed was investigated in over 300 tests.CWC concentration ratio and the top-size of the underflow solids were both affected by cone type, VFC, and feed pressure. Gold recovery was significantly affected by gold size, gold shape, and concentration ratio. These effects are complex, because significant size-concentration ratio and size-shape interactions exist. Radiotracer techniques showed gold particles had a residence time within the ewe of approximately one second. This study suggests ewe gold recovery is a concentration. This work suggests ewe gold recovery is a function of particle size and shape, and the flow rate through the cyclone. CWC cone ""bed density"" is considered important only as a thin, protective layer, which shields coarser gold particles from the entraining currents and facilitates their movement through the CWC.IntroductionCompound water cyclones (CWC), or automedium cyclones, are enhanced gravity concentrators for the beneficiation for slurries of sand, coal, and ground ore (Fig. 1). They are called compound water cyclones because of the compound slopes of their basal cones (Fig. 2) and are operated to suppress classification phenomena in favour of gravity concentration effects. The compound water cyclone is not a new wet concentrator. It was developed in the late 1950s by Dr. Jan Visman through research sponsored by Canada's Department of Energy, Mines, and Resources. Since that time, it has become a common unit in coal washeries for cleaning fine coal. CWCs and other versions of concentrating cyclones have also shown promise for heavy minerals and precious metals recovery."

The present work reports a study of production of thorium concentrate from Egyptian monazite by decomposition of ammonium carbonate solutions containing ammonium thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes. These solutions were obtained from the processing of monazite by alkaline leaching in ball-mill autoclaves, followed by selective separation of thorium and uranium from lanthanides by autoclave leaching of the hydroxide cake obtained with ammonium carbonate - bicarbonate solutions. The separation of thorium and uranium in the form of thorium concentrate from their carbonate complexes was achieved by different methods, including neutralization of solutions at pH = 6.7 by acid, addition of alkali at pH = 11.5, heating of solution at 100°C and processing of carbonate solution with steam under pressure in steel autoclaves. Processing of solutions of thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes in an autoclave with steam causes their decomposition. Complete recovery of thorium 99.8% and 98.4% uranium recovery in thorium concentrate was attained at 120°C and steam pressure 2 atm, within 10 min. Meanwhile, the recovery of lanthanides was low and did not exceed 1.1%. The thorium concentrate produced contains 67.82% Th, 4.6% U and 3.14% REE. All methods achieve complete separation of thorium and uranium from their carbonate solutions, but the first two methods are unfavourable for the industry due to the high cost of reagents and their inability to regenerate the ammonium carbonate. The decomposition of ammonium thorium and uranyl carbonate complexes with steam under pressure is recommended for industrial application for its simplicity and the ability to regenerate the ammonium carbonate.

Fracture Network Engineering (FNE) is the engineering design of rock mass disturbance through the use of advanced techniques to model fractured rock masses numerically, and then correlate field observations with simulated fractures generated within the models. Microseismic (MS) monitoring is a standard tool for evaluating the geometry and evolution of the fracture network induced during a hydraulic treatment, principally by source locating MS hypocenters and visualizing these with respect to the treatment volume and infrastructure (Figure 1). The integrated use of Synthetic Rock Mass (SRM) modeling of the hydrofracturing with Enhanced Microseismic Analysis (EMA) provides a feedback loop in which the SRM is constrained by the information provided by the MS data and the in-situ behavior of the fracture network is better understood, leading to informed decisions on future field operations. This paper discusses the technologies used in FNE and some of the developmental challenges we face in order to provide a more efficient and robust application of the approach. One particular challenge is the accurate representation of MS source data within the models (locations, magnitudes and mechanisms), and the ability to correlate these data effectively with field results. This challenge is being overcome by the development of more efficient numerical modeling algorithms, providing simulations in three dimensions at reservoir scale, combined with validation of these algorithms using laboratory and field case studies.

"Abstract - The Little Falls member of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation is situated in the northern part of the Brunswick Belt of the Bathurst Mining Camp and has been interpreted as the distal equivalent of proximal tuffaceous rocks that host the stratiform Brunswick No. 12 and No. 6 Pb-Zn massive sulfide deposits. It comprises fine-grained, greenish-gray tuffaceous sandstone in the lower part, and coarse-grained, crystal-rich tuffaceous sandstone in the upper part. Petrographic evidence suggests that these rocks have a turbiditic origin. The Little Falls member is underlain by the Vallée Lourdes member, mainly composed of relatively shallow-water calcareous rocks, and is conformably overlain by Mn-rich sedimentary rocks, mainly red argillites that host the Tetagouche Falls Mn-(Fe) deposit. All these rocks are considered to belong to the Nepisiguit Falls Formation, part of the Ordovician Tetagouche Group. Whole-rock geochemical data from the fine-grained tuffaceous sandstone and coarse-grained tuffaceous sandstone indicate that the two units of the Little Falls member are distinct. Zr and TiO2 contents, and total rare earth element (REE) values are higher in the coarse-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.040, average SREE = 247 ppm, n = 6) than in the fine-grained unit (average Zr/TiO2 = 0.048, average SREE = 158 ppm, n = 17), which can be attributed to the variation in crystal content between the two units. Both units are HREE-enriched and have elevated La/Yb relative to the typical Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Overall, the geochemical data combined with evidence from the bounding units suggest that the Little Falls member was deposited in relatively shallow water, possibly in a near-arc environment. The relationship of volcanic facies within the Nepisiguit Falls Formation and the geochemistry of these facies indicate strongly that fine grained, reworked tuffaceous rocks, regardless of whether they are the distal equivalents of proximal tuffaceous rocks, are not associated with the major ore-bearing horizons of the Bathurst Mining Camp. Toutes ces roches appartiennent à la Formation de Nepisiguit Falls, laquelle fait partie du Groupe de Tetagouche, d’âge Ordovicien. Les données lithogéochimiques des grès tuffacés à grains fins et à grains grossiers indiquent que ces deux unités du Membre de Little Falls sont distinctes. Les teneurs en Zr et en TiO2, ainsi que la teneur totale en Éléments des Terres Rares (ÉTR) sont plus élevées dans l’unité à grains grossiers (Zr/TiO2 moyen = 0.040, SREE moyen = 247 ppm, n = 6) que dans l’unité à grains fins (Zr/TiO2 moyen = 0.048, SREE moyen = 158 ppm, n = 17), ce qui pourrait s’expliquer par la variation de la quantité de cristaux dans chacune de ces deux unités.
